Europe working holiday destinations

Europe has many countries and after the devastation of World War II, several European countries looked at ways to make sure they would never go to war against each other again. It was decided that countries would join forces to achieve mutual benefit and lasting peace. That idea has today become the European Union (EU).

Mutual benefit is being achieved in a number of ways. Restrictions have been lifted on the movement of goods, services, capital and people between member states. This has created several benefits: qualifications gained in one member state are recognised in another; travel between member states is made easier and quicker; and if citizens become ill in one member state then they have access to that member state’s health service via reciprocal health agreements.

If you have ancestry from a European Union (EU) member country you may wish to explore the possibility of an EU passport and/or ancestry visa. Having one of these will allow you to move freely throughout the EU and allow you to live and work. Contact the appropriate Embassy/Consulate/High Commission of the EU country you have ancestry from for details.

There are currently 27 member countries in the European Union. They are (listed in alphabetical order with the year they entered the EU). Austria (1995), Belgium (1958), Bulgaria (2007), Croatia (2013), Cyprus (2004), Czech Republic (2004), Denmark (1973), Estonia (2004), Finland (1995), France (1958), Germany (1958), Greece (1981), Hungary (2004), Ireland (1973), Italy (1958), Latvia (2004), Lithuania (2004), Luxembourg (1958), Malta (2004), Netherlands (1958), Poland (2004), Portugal (1986), Romania (2007), Slovakia (2004), Slovenia (2004), Spain (1986), Sweden (1995).
