It’s a great idea to rent the coats etc if you are in a place that has that… Here in Canada I found the best way to get gear is either in the sales (in October here, they call it the turkey sale) or from thrift stores in ski areas.

For base layers, I looove heat tech from uniqlo. It’s pretty cheap and I am allergic to wool so it’s the best option for me. 🙂

Helmets are optional as you mention, and a personal choice. Keep in mind that helmets aren’t just to protect you when you fall, but in case someone runs in to you. Hopefully that never happens, but on a crowded mountain, it certainly can. If the helmet fits well, you likely won’t even notice it’s there, and it helps to keep you warm.

We’ve collected most of these items over the years for our snow vacations. We usually don’t ski, but do go to the snow. You can have a much longer snowball fight if you have proper gloves and clothing.
