Well, Asia, particularly Southeast Asia, is a popular choice for digital nomads due to its low cost of living, thriving co-working communities, warmer weather and rich cultural experiences. Many like that they can work from sea-side beach cafes or in jungle cities. So, say no more.

What is a Digital Nomad Visa?

I am presuming if you are reading this you know what a digital nomad visa is, but let me give you a quick recap. A digital nomad visa is a visa allowing remote workers the opportunity to live and work online in another country. 

Each country has their own regulations you must meet to get the visa. Like earning a certain amount, having health insurance and no criminal record. And if you qualify for said visa, you can legally live and work for 6+ months in the country. What a great way to immerse yourself in a new culture.

Digital nomad visas are also known as freelance visas, remote worker visas, expat visas, online worker visas, and a number of other unique names. But they work similarly – allowing you to live and work online for an extended period.

Why Live and Work in Asia?

Why not live and work in Asia? This is what you should be asking yourself. If you are chasing a cheaper lifestyle and great food, then an Asian digital nomad visa should be top of your list. Key reasons to choose an Asian digital nomad visa:

• Affordable Lifestyle. Yep, the cost of living in Asian nations is cheaper and can provide a better lifestyle than your own country. This allows a better quality of life. The technical term for this is geoarbitrage.
• Unique Cultural and Adventure Opportunities. This is my favourite part of any visit to Asia. Asa is known for its vibrant cities, natural wonders and food markets so there is plenty to see and do in Asia – and eat.
• Travel Opportunities. Living and working in Asia means you can travel extensively, even visiting another country in a day. And immerse yourself in different cultures.
• Thriving Tech Scene. Many Asian cities are digital nomad hubs. They have the infrastructure all set up including fast Wi-Fi and co-working spaces and cafes to work in. And there are plenty of digital nomad jobs you can do.
• Proximity and Time Zone. Asia is on a similar time zone with other Asian countries and also European and Oceania countries. This helps making work and collaborations seamless. No getting up in the middle of the night to take a conference call – well, that will depend on where your clients are!

Countries in Asia with a Digital Nomad Visa

When you say Asia, Asia covers a number of areas. Following is a quick rundown.

Central Asia: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan

East Asia: China, Macau, Japan, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea, and Taiwan.

South Asia / Indian subcontinent: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka; Afghanistan and the Maldives.

South East Asia:  Brunei, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Timor-Leste, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

West Asia: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Cyprus, Georgia, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey. (Some of these countries I have included under the Middle East).

North Asia: Russia, Mongolia, Japan, Korea and China

So as you can see from this list of Asian areas and countries there are many countries in Asia to live and work. However, not all have a digital nomad visa at this time. Some have a working holiday visa.

Indonesia (Bali), Remote Worker Visa (E33G) Program

Not technically Asia, but in the Asia region is Bali, Indonesia. For a long time now the beautiful island of Bali has been a popular location for remote workers and digital nomads to base themselves. It has infrastructure for digital nomads all set up. Fast Wi-Fi and plenty of digital nomad hubs so if seeking to hook up with other digital nomads, this is a great place to do so while living a great lifestyle.

Many who live and work in Bali on a tourist visa and do a ‘visa run’ to extend their stay. Or, might be living in Indonesia on a B211A Business Visa. Good news, Indonesia introduced in April 2024 the Remote Worker Visa (E33G) Program. Initially valid for one year, this visa can be renewed up to five times, allowing remote workers to live in the country for a total of six years. Wow!

Japan Digital Nomad Visa

In April 2024 Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced a digital nomad visa for Japan. It is intended for remote workers with an annual income of ten million yen or more. That’s about AUD106,000 or USD68,000 or GBP51,000 per annum. If you qualify, the Japan digital nomad visa will allow you to work remotely in Japan for up to six months. Kazakhstan, Neo Nomad Visa

Kazakhstan is a landlocked country located primarily in Central Asia. It is bordered by Russia to the north and west, China to the east and the Caspian Sea to the southwest. And as of November 2024 Kazakhstan has a digital nomad visa. Officially known as the Neo Nomad Visa, or B12-1 visa. This visa allows those who successfully apply for it to live and work in Kazakhstan for up to a year. After that time, there is an option to renew for another year.

Like other digital nomad visas, the Kazakhstan digital nomad visa requires you to be earning USD3,000 per month. And also have international health insurance amongst other things. For more details and to apply online, head to the Astana Hub.

Malaysia, DE Rantau Nomad Pass

Malaysia is a country in Southeast Asia known for its diverse culture, vibrant cities and natural landscapes. It is a multicultural nation with a blend of Malay, Chinese, Indian and Indigenous locals. Probably best known for its iconic landmarks like the Petronas Twin Towers and natural wonders like Langkawi’s beaches. And now, along with its neighbours Thailand and Indonesia, it is fast becoming a digital nomad hub in Asia. That’s thanks to the new Malaysia digital nomad visa. 

Known as the Professional Visit Pass, the visa is released by DE Rantau Nomad Pass. This visa allows digital nomads to live and work in Malaysia for three to 12 months with the ability to renew the visa for a second year. Sounds good, so if wanting a destination to enjoy a tropical climate and cheap cost of living, then Malaysia may be your next digital nomad destination. It would also make a great base for exploring the neighbouring countries.

Philippines Digital Nomad Visa

Great news, as of April 2025, the bill for the Philippines’ digital nomad visa has been approved and will begin accepting applications at the end of June. It is proposed the visa will allow foreigners to live and work in the Philippines for up to a year and be renewable for an additional 12 months, giving a total of two years. South Korea, Workcation Visa

The South Korea Government launched the South Korea digital nomad visa or Workcation Visa on 1 January 2024. It’s aim is to help increase tourism revenue for South Korea. And while increased tourism revenue suits the South Korean government, remote workers and digital nomads will love having another country to add to the growing list of countries with a digital nomad visa to choose from. If successful in applying for the South Korea digital nomad visa, you will be able to live and work in South Korea for up to a year. If you are there already on a tourist visa or temporary visa you may convert it to the South Korea digital nomad visa while in the country. South Korea, like fellow countries Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines has a tropical climate and a cheaper cost of living making South Korea a great digital nomad destination. Sri Lanka Digital Nomad Visa

Dreaming of dreamy beaches and incredible wildlife? Then you will be pleased to know Sri Lanka, known as the ‘pearl of the Indian Ocean’, has launched a digital nomad visa in February 2026. Like most digital nomad visas, applicants must be earning a certain amount – above €1,700 (US$2,000) a month. If successful in obtaining a digital nomad visa for Sri Lanka you will be allowed to stay for up to 12 months, which is renewable. 

Taiwan, Taiwan Employment Gold Card

Taiwan, a lovely East Asian country is a popular country for ex-pats to live. It is a beautiful choice for nomadic workers wishing to migrate to Asia since it provides everything they need. From high-speed Internet to efficient public transportation to a bustling network of fellow mobile employees. In 2018, the Act for the Recruitment and Employment of International Professional Talent (Act) launched the Taiwan Employment Gold Card for foreign professionals seeking jobs in Taiwan. It’s a four-in-one document that may serve as a work permit, a resident visa, a re-entry visa, and an Alien Residence Certificate. Thailand, Long Term Residence Visa

Thailand has long been a popular digital nomad destination. Mainly due to its cheap cost of living, fast wifi and infrastructure set up for remote workers. And now, digital nomads, retirees with pensions and wealthy investors are rejoicing that Thailand has introduced the Thailand Digital Nomad Visa as this visa will allow them to live and work in Thailand for 10 years. Officially called the Long Term Residence Visa this visa is very selective and comes with strict requirements. If preferring a more traditional digital nomad visa, there is the Thailand Multiple-Entry Visa for Digital Nomads.

What Is the Philippines Digital Nomad Visa?

The Philippines Digital Nomad Visa is a new visa program that allows qualified remote workers to live and work in the country for up to two years. It starts with an initial 12-month stay, which can be renewed for another 12 months. This will give you plenty of time to explore, settle in, and enjoy island life while continuing your remote career.

Why a Digital Nomad Visa for The Philippines?

This visa was created to welcome digital professionals who earn income from foreign clients or companies. While also supporting local tourism and the growing digital economy. With fast-growing co-working hubs, affordable living, and thousands of islands to explore, the Philippines offers a unique mix of work and lifestyle. A lifestyle that’s ideal for remote workers looking for a longer-term tropical base.

Who’s Eligible for The Philippines Digital Nomad Visa?

To qualify, you must:

●      Be at least 18 years old
●      Be a remote worker or self-employed (freelancer, consultant, business owner)
●      Earn income from foreign sources only
●      Not work for a Philippine-based company
●      Be a citizen of a country that – Has a reciprocal DNV for Filipinos, and – Hosts a Philippine Foreign Service Post (embassy or consulate)
●      Hold a valid passport
●      Have health insurance covering your full stay
●      Provide a clean police clearance from your current country of residence

As of August 2025, the minimum income requirement hasn’t been disclosed. It’s likely to be on par with other ASEAN countries (estimated at ~$2,000/month). Check official updates before applying.

Required Documents

While the official application portal is still being finalized as of August 2025, the main documents you’ll need to prepare in advance:

●      Completed visa application form
●      Proof of remote work or self-employment
●      Proof of sufficient income from foreign sources
●      Health insurance certificate
●      Police clearance

How to Apply

The Philippine’s government is finalising the digital nomad visa process. Applications will likely be submitted through the Philippine e-Visa portal, managed by the Bureau of Immigration. However, some steps may still need to be done at a Philippine Embassy or Consulate in your country. Particularly if interviews or biometrics are required.

Process Overview (tentative):

1. Gather Your Required Documents
2. Apply via the e-Visa Portal
3. Visit a Philippine Foreign Service Post (If Required). Depending on your nationality or the specifics of your case, you may be asked to attend an in-person appointment at a Philippine Embassy or Consulate for Biometric data capture (e.g., fingerprints) or a short interview.
4. Wait for Visa Approval. Processing times haven’t been published yet, but allow for a few weeks. 

Once approved, you’ll receive instructions on how to enter the Philippines, including permitted arrival airports and visa validity terms.

Taxes: Do You Owe Anything Locally?

Good news! Under the Philippines Digital Nomad Visa, remote workers are not considered tax residents of the Philippines. This means you won’t owe local income tax as long as your income is earned exclusively from foreign sources. And, you don’t engage in any work for Philippine-based companies. Instead, you’ll continue paying taxes in your home country or your official country of tax residency.

There’s generally no risk of double taxation under this visa. But, it’s still a good idea to check if your home country has a tax treaty with the Philippines. Also, this visa does not grant permanent residency, so it doesn’t trigger long-term tax obligations locally. However, if you plan to stay for an extended period, especially close to or beyond 183 days in a calendar year, it is advisable to consult a tax advisor to ensure full compliance with international tax rules.

To be safe, keep documentation of your remote work arrangement and proof that your income is sourced from outside the Philippines. Just in case authorities request verification during your stay.

A visit to Phuket is a must on your 1 Month Thailand Itinerary

So you’ve decided to go on holiday to Thailand and you have one month to spend there. Thailand is one of the more popular places to visit in Asia. This country has so much to offer, from beautiful temples, jungles and waterfalls, pristine beaches, incredible food and the friendliest people. If you are thinking of visiting Thailand and it will be your first trip to Thailand, use this 4 week itinerary for Thailand to plan your trip and see all the highlights Thailand has to offer. 

Thailand is a versatile country that has something for everyone. Zipline through the jungle in North Thailand or dive into the crystal clear water in the Gulf of Thailand. Get a Thai Massage after a long day of exploring temples or sit by the pool bar and enjoy the lights of Bangkok. But most of all, immerse yourself in Thailand on this Thailand for a month adventure, particular if it is your first ever visit to Thailand.

My guide to Thailand is divided into two sections. The first being the 1 month Thailand itinerary and the second, helping you prepare for you trip to Thailand. So, let’s begin!

Thailand 1 Month Itinerary at a Glance

This 1 month Thailand itinerary spends 2 weeks on mainland Thailand visiting the major cities of interest. From Bangkok to Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand. Then the second 2 weeks is spent island hopping off Southern Thailand. Now Thailand has many wonderful islands to visit, some more well-known than others. Check out the map I have done showing you some of the islands and the city highlights of this Thailand month long itinerary. 

To get to know Thailand during this month long itinerary I suggest spending your time as follows. 

• Bangkok – 7 days – includes 4 days in Bangkok plus one day trips to Pattaya, Ayutthaya and Kanchanabri. An alternative to 7 days in Bangkok could be to spend 3 days in Bangkok, then travel to Ayutthaya for 2 days and then onto Kanchanabri for 2 days before heading to Chang Mai. I chose the first option as I had a base but if you are a budget backpacker you may want to keep on the move.
• Chiang Mai and Chang Rai – 3-5 days
• 1 day travelling to either Trat or Krabi in Southern Thailand to begin island hopping. These two cities are great step off points in Thailand for the islands.
• 2 weeks of Island hopping

1 Month Thailand Itinerary

Bangkok, 7 Days

Bangkok is the capital of Thailand and there is a lot to see and do so spending time in Bangkok should be included in any trip to Thailand.

Where to Stay in Bangkok – Bangkok Accommodation Options

Most tourists stay near Khao San Road that is close to all the sights, restaurants and nightlife. If you are near the MRT or BTS you’ll be able to go anywhere without much hassle. There are other quieter and more authentic areas to stay at but for your first trip to Bangkok, I would suggest staying near Khao San Road. Other areas to consider are Riverside, Sukhumvit and / or Chinatown. I would suggest booking accommodation that has a rooftop pool and bar if possible. Believe me, after a hard day of sightseeing in the Thailand heat, you will be pleased to have a dip in the pool and a cool drink!

Day 4 – Day Trip to Pattaya

You can find Pattaya on Thailand’s eastern Gulf coast. It is about a 2 hour journey by bus or train from Bangkok but a day tour will ensure you see all the highlights. Once a sleeping fishing village it is now known for its beaches that are lined with resort hotels, high rise condos, shopping malls, cabaret bars and 24-hour clubs. I guess you can compare it to the Gold Coast in Queensland or Cancun in Mexico for the attractions it offers. If you want to leave the beach then head to nearby Wat Phra Ya Temple to see it’s 18m tall golden Buddha! You could end your day with a cabaret show!

Day 5 – Day Trip to Ayutthaya

Ayutthaya is the former capital of Siam, which was destroyed by the Burmese army. Siam is the former kingdom and country of Thailand. Today, Ayutthaya is a vast area containing ruins of temples, but you will also find active temples there. What made it all famous in the last years, is a stone Buddha head overgrown by tree roots. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is full of historical buildings worth exploring on a dedicated day trip. Add the Ayutthaya temple ruins (Wat Mahathat) to your bucket list. As well as the oldest temple with the huge golden Buddha (Wat Phanan Choeng) and the active monastery (Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon). It is recommended to get a guide with a transportation option because you will actually get to know more about the history and customs of the area. Besides, Ayutthaya is massive, and the heat is unforgiving, so getting around by car or tuktuk is a huge plus point! A guide will also help you understand and respect religious customs, which can be a bit overwhelming if you are new to Thailand or South-East Asia.

Day 6 – Day Trip to Kanchanaburi

Just two hours outside bustling Bangkok is one of Southeast Asia’s most relaxing places to visit. Kanchanaburi is beautiful and has some of the country’s best historical and natural sights. The top attraction in Kanchanaburi is the infamous Kwai River Bridge. The steel bridge spanning the Kwai River was a major point in the Burma railway the Japanese tried to build. It is here, the scene of some of the most gruesome events in Asia during World War II.  After walking across the bridge, visit the World War II war cemetery in town. Day 7 – Bangkok

Back in Bangkok the day is yours free to re-visit places in Bangkok you liked or to discover more of Bangkok. Many use the day to travel to Chiang Mai or take the overnight train.

Chiang Mai, 3-5 Days

Chiang Mai is the next port of call on this 1 month Thailand itinerary. It is definitely worth a visit. Chiang Mai can be found in the north of country. If you are wondering why you should travel 8 hours or so to get there, you won’t be disappointed. The Old City has many temples to visit and it is surrounded by gorgeous greenery and incredible wildlife. This is why many digital nomads choose to live here.

What to See and Do in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai Day 1 – Get to Know the Old Town

Day 1 in Chiang Mai should be spent getting to know Chiang Mai Old Town. Inside the walls of the old town you will find many temples. In fact there are around 300 temples in Chiang Mai with many located inside the Old Town. Some of the most popular to visit include:

• Wat Pra Singh
• Wat Phra That Doi Suthep (outside the city but easy enough to get to by tuk-tuk)
• Wat Chedi Luang
• Wat Chiang Man
• Wat Lok Moli

You will do a lot of walking in Chiang Mai, so I hope you packed a good pair of walking shoes! You can always flag down a tuk-tuk to get you around. They are cheap and cheerful and provide a great Thai experience. And after all the walking, maybe treat yourself to a Thai foot massage! There are plenty of parlours dotted around the city where you can get a foot massage for a mere $5.

Food is great tasting in Chiang Mai. You can find many restaurants and cafes for some great food or why not take a Thai cooking class in Chiang Mai – if you didn’t in Bangkok. Even if you did, learn another dish in Chiang Mai!

I’ve budget up to 5 days in Chiang Mai in this one month Thailand itinerary. So you can extend your stay here or head to Chiang Rai for a day or so taking in this mountainous area with plenty of temples, particularly Wat Rong Khun, the famous White Temple and waterfalls. Maybe take a tour or drive to the Golden Triangle. Yep, 1-2 hours north of Chiang Rai is where the borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos meet. The area has an very interesting drug trade history which you can discover at the Opium House Museum. End your days in Chiang Rai at Chiang Rai’s Night Bazaar. This small market near the bus station offers a great chance for souvenir shopping. From Chiang Rai head back to Chiang Mai to travel south to begin island hopping. You could catch the overnight train back to Bangkok then fly to the islands or fly from Chiang Mai Airport.

Two Weeks Thailand Island Hopping

After a wonderful 2 weeks discovering vibrant Bangkok, the old capital of Ayutthaya, the Bridge at the River Kwai and tropical Chiang Mai it’s time for some island hopping in Thailand. Thailand’s islands can be found all around the coastline of Thailand with some in The Gulf of Thailand and others in The Andaman Sea. Which Thailand Island to Visit?

Each Thailand island has plenty to offer. Trat is a great stepping off point for the islands in The Gulf of Thailand while Krabi is a good place for island hopping in The Andaman Sea. Each are special in their own way. To enjoy each you may want to spend a couple of days on each – if you have the time or choose a couple and stay longer on them.

Islands in The Gulf of Thailand

There are many islands in The Gulf of Thailand to island hop. Head to Trat and jump off to some of the best Koh Chang, Koh May, Koh Hood, Koh Tao, Koh Phi Ngan and Koh Samui. Why visit these Thai islands? 

Koh Chang

Koh Chang is the largest of the three islands of Koh Chang, Koh May and Koh Hood. This is one of the best places to enjoy the beautiful sunsets Thailand has to offer. Hire a bike or scooter and head to the fishing village to learn about the history of Koh Chang. Jump in the water to cool down at one of the many beaches. Or visit one of the many waterfalls you can find on this island.

Koh Mak

Take a ferry from Koh Chang and head to Koh Mak, the smallest of these islands. Koh Mak doesn’t allow cars other than the taxis and songtaews that are part of the resorts and there aren’t a lot of buildings. This is the best place to go snorkeling because the water is clear and there are a lot of places where you’ll spot fish, coral, sea urchins, and other beautiful wildlife. You could rent a kayak or paddle board and head to one of the tiny islands close by for a day as well.

Koh Kood

The other island is Koh Kood, which has enormous old trees that are worth a visit. Of course, you will find beautiful beaches here as well. There is another fishing village here where you can get the best and freshest seafood. Take time to relax at the beach or hire a bike or scooter to discover the island. And if you haven’t had enough waterfalls, go explore them at Koh Kood. There are several scattered throughout the island.

At the end of your trip, you’ll simply head back to Trat by ferry. Either take a bus or flight back to Bangkok from Trat or fly to other islands like Koh Tao, Koh Pha Ngan or Koh Samui. 

Koh Samui

Lying off the east coast of Thailand, Koh Samui is Thailand’s second largest island. Known for its coconut groves, luxury resorts and spas, it is a must visit for couples, families and adventurers.

One of it’s biggest draws are the beautiful beaches on Koh Samui, each catering for a different type of traveler – from budget to five star. Other must sees include the Big Buddha temple, Fishermans village, and the Samui elephant sanctuary, where you can feed and care for these gentle giants. For dinner, Coco Tam’s beach bar is unmissable, just make sure you stay until 10pm to enjoy the fire show on the sand (dubbed the best in Koh Samui). 

Islands In The Andaman Sea 

The islands off Thailand in the Andaman Sea are world-renowned. It’s here where you will find Phuket and the iconic James Bond Island’. If this is your first time in Thailand, then I would be putting these islands on your itinerary for your first visit to Thailand. Then you can ticket them off your Thailand bucket list.

Krabi

Krabi is definitely one of the best places to visit in Thailand. It’s not actually an island, but an area on Thailand’s coast and is well worth the visit, especially when traveling to Thailand for the first time. This beautiful region is located in the south of Thailand on the Andaman Sea and is easily accessible by flight from Bangkok or Chiang Mai.

Krabi is famous for its fascinating rugged limestone cliffs, dense green jungle, snow-white sandy beaches, turquoise sea and breathtaking islands! The resorts of Ao Nang and picturesque Klong Muang are a particularly good recommendation for a vacation.

During a visit to Krabi, you can visit numerous sights. Highlights being the Peninsula Railay with the world famous Railay Beach and the even more beautiful Phra Nang Beach. As well as discovering Krabi, it is a great stepping off point for many islands including Koh Hong, Koh Poda and Chicken Island, where there is a chicken head rock. As well as plenty of islands to discover you can climb the countless steps of the high Tiger Cave Temple. Or visit to the Elephant Sanctuary Krabi.

Phuket

The famous James Bond Island located in Phan Nga Bay – Phuket is an absolute bucket list destination in Thailand. The great thing is that you can visit the island for less than $50 on a day trip!

Leaving on the boat from Phuket you will pass many breathtaking limestone cliffs before arriving at the magical James Bond Island. This island was featured in the movie ‘The Man with the Golden Gun’. Before the 1974 movie, starring Roger Moore and Christopher Lee literally no international tourists had heard about James Bond Island. Now, it’s popularity has exploded and it is a must-see in Thailand during your island hopping odyssey.

The beautiful thin limestone cliff of James Bond Island has a really unusual shape and rises majestically out the sea. It is very slim at the bottom and gets wider towards the top. Very impressive to see. Now you can’t go onto James Bond Island – it is really for viewing only. You can admire it from a small beach opposite it on Koh Ping Ghan.

Koh Phi Phi

Many water enthusiasts add Koh Phi Phi to their Thailand itinerary as it’s waters are filled with exotic marine life. If you are a keen snorkeler or scuba diver, you will love a visiting this island for the fabulous diving spots. But you can lounge around at the beach all day if you prefer!

Things to Know Before You Go to Thailand

Tip 1: Dress modestly, especially when you’re visiting temples. If you’re not wearing the right clothes you won’t be allowed to enter or they will give you something to cover up. Most Thai people practice Buddhism. Give way to monks when walking on footpaths, and don’t sit next to them on public transport. Women can’t touch a monk or their belongings.

Tip 2: People appreciate it if you speak their language. Learn at least the basics for saying hello (Sawadee krap/ka) and goodbye, thank you (Kap khun krap/ka), and a few other phrases.

Tip 3: Don’t forget to try the local food because it’s amazing. Just remember that Thai people love spicy food so if they say a little spicy it might still be more than what you were expecting. Fortunately, they have fresh fruit juices to calm your tongue after a spicy meal.

Tip 4: Before you visit, make sure to check Thailand visa requirements. Travelers from most countries can stay visa-free in Thailand for up to one month (30 days), the perfect amount of time to explore this incredible country. 

Tip 5: Before you start your Thailand One Month Itinerary, get an International Driver’s License. One of the easiest ways to get around in Thailand is by scooter or motorbike. To rent a motorbike in Thailand, often you only need to provide the tour company your passport or a 2000+ baht deposit. No license check necessary. However, in case of accidents or random police check-points, it’s best to have an International Driver’s License on you. 

Tip 6: I recommend staying close to the centre of each city you visit. Being walking distance to many of the sights and restaurants will save on time and money spent on transportation. If possible, in Bangkok, book accommodation that has a rooftop pool and bar. Believe me, after a hard day of sightseeing in Thailand heat, you will enjoy a dip in the pool and a cool drink while overlooking the lights of Bangkok.

Tip 7: Purchase Travel Insurance. Anything can happen when you’re traveling in Thailand, especially when you’re riding your first scooter, snorkeling, hiking up mountains or sliding down waterfalls. When to Visit Thailand

The best time to visit Thailand weather-wise is between November to March. But this means it’s also the busiest season, especially in December and January when people come here to celebrate Christmas or New Year.

If you’re looking to visit Thailand’s coast try the shoulder season – April to June and September and October. The climate differs between the eastern and western coasts, where the west coast is more suitable for September and October.

If you don’t mind a little bit of rain and prefer to spend as little money as possible, visit Thailand in July to October. This is the low season, so you’ll get better prices for everything.

Getting to Thailand

Many arrive in Thailand by plane at Suvarnabhumi Airport, also known unofficially as Bangkok International Airport. However, if you are already in Asia you can cross from one of the border countries with Thailand. They being, Myammar, Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia.

From the airport you will need to get to your accommodation in Bangkok. There are a couple of ways. You can take The Airport Rail Link. This connects the airport to the city. Trains depart every 15 minutes between 6am and midnight. The cost is a reasonable 45 Bahts. You could also take a taxi which can cost between 250 and 450 Bahts depending on your destination and the traffic. Or you can book private transport. Private transport will pick you up at the airport and take you to your accommodation. I chose this option, well, it chose me, it was included with my accommodation. Getting around Thailand

Public transport is quite good in Thailand and inexpensive. Whether you are traveling by bus, train, or airplane, there are a lot of options. One thing a lot of people add to their itinerary is the sleeper train between Bangkok and Chiang Mai.

In cities, you will see red songtaews that are basically shared taxis that will take you anywhere. Just make sure to agree on a price before getting in. Grab is popular as well in Thailand and they have cars, taxis, and scooters.

Although traffic in Thailand seems quite chaotic there is a system to the madness. If you decide to hire a car, scooter, or bike it won’t be hard to blend in. Just pay attention to the locals and do as they do. And don’t forget to organise an International Driver’s Licence to hire a vehicle.

What to Pack for a Holiday in Thailand?

When packing for a holiday in Thailand, be governed by the weather. Most of the time it is hot and humid so pack light clothes. Also a good pair of walking shoes as you will do plenty of walking. And don’t forget the sunscreen and a hat for those lazy days at the beach or by the pool.

Tip: Appearances mean a lot in Thailand so dressing properly and being respectful of dress regulations you should be treated in return with respect. Thailand does not have a specific dress code in general but when visiting temples there is a specific dress code for tourists and locals. You must have covered shoulders and wear pants or dresses that cover your knees and preferably your ankles also. Men should wear a collared shirt rather than a t-shirt. And you must take your shoes off in temples. Keep all beach wear for the beach.

Your packing list for Thailand should include:

Documents. Passport, visa (if needed), money and credit cards, travel insurance details, pre-booked entrance and Hop-on Hop-off bus tickets, pre-booked accommodation details. Also take an International Driver’s Licence as one of the easiest ways to get around backpacking in Thailand is by scooter or motorbike.
Clothes. It is mostly hot and humid in Thailand so thin materials that breathe and keep you cool are a must pack. You will need underwear, shorts and t-shirts, long pants or skirts for visiting temples, a scarf or sarong to cover your head, and I always include a light jacket. You just never know, as some nights can get cool. Ensure you have good walking shoes as you will be walking a lot.
Electronics. Phone, camera, power adaptor plug and power bank. Laptop and any other gear if you are a digital nomad.
Toiletries.
Luggage. As you will be moving around every few days on this itinerary of Italy, ensure your luggage is easy to carry.

Set in the north of the country, Chiang Mai is a city surrounded by gorgeous greenery and incredible wildlife. Why Visit Chiang Mai?

In any visit to Thailand, you will want to discover as many places as possible. After a few days in Bangkok, many head to Chiang Mai, why? The city centre is square, made up of ancient walls that used to protect it. Inside the walls lies the Old Town, where you’ll find a wonderful blend of traditional temples, delicious food markets and modern boutique hotels. Throw in elephants and waterfalls and Chiang Mai becomes a must visit destination while travelling in Thailand. It is also home to many digital nomads who come to Thailand for the low cost of living, fast internet, great food scene, cafes and co-working spaces.

Where Is Chiang Mai?

Chiang Mai is around 700km north of the capital of Thailand, Bangkok. It lies some 150km from the border between Thailand and Myanmar.

How To Get To Chiang Mai

There are a number of transport options to get you to Chiang Mai.

Fly to Chiang Mai

The best way to reach Chiang Mai for your 3 day visit is by plane. Chiang Mai has an international airport in the city so it’s really easy to get to from either Bangkok or whatever country you’re visiting from.

Catch the Sleeper Train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai

If you’re on a budget, or you would just like to experience something a bit different, then we’d recommend taking the sleeper train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai! There are a few different train options, but the best one is the number 9 in a 2nd class carriage. This train leaves Bangkok at 18:57 and arrives in Chiang Mai at 07:15 the next day. 

The timings of the trip from Bangkok to Chiang Mai are important for a few reasons! Firstly, taking a later train means that you maximise the time you have in Bangkok. You can spend all day there and arrive at the train station just a short time before you depart. It also means that it arrives in Chiang Mai early in the morning. So again, you have the whole day to enjoy exploring Chiang Mai rather than sitting on a train. Be aware though that the trains aren’t always on time, so you might arrive in Chiang Mai a little later than planned. Don’t book anything for too early in the morning on this day, just in case!

It’s also a good idea to take an overnight trip so that you save money on a hotel! If you spent the whole day travelling, you would be wasting time and you’d also need to book somewhere to stay for an extra day in Chiang Mai. Sleeping on the train saves you all of that money and hassle.

A 2nd class carriage is more than good enough to sleep in, and most trains don’t offer anything better anyway. Just make sure that you are booking ‘sleeper seats’ and not just standard 2nd class seats!

Take a Bus from Bangkok to Chiang Mai

You can also take a bus – these also run throughout both the day and night. However, a bus is only really an option if there are no train tickets left! The buses can take between 9.5 and 12 hours to get from Bangkok to Chiang Mai and they don’t offer full beds – only reclining seats.

What To Do In Chiang Mai: Day 1 – Get to Know Chiang Mai

Get to Know Chiang Mai OId Town

One of the first things we recommend doing on day 1 of Chiang Mai for 3 days itinerary is what we recommend when visiting any new city. Take a wander around the Chiang Mai town and get to know your surroundings! This could be just by walking and exploring yourself, or by taking a walking/food tour. The Old Town of Chiang Mai is a fascinating place. You could get lost for hours among the small lanes and markets.

 If you’ve had enough of walking, then you can flag down a tuk-tuk to take you around. They’re cheap and cheerful – but not for the faint-hearted. If you haven’t been in one before, be prepared to hold on and enjoy a true Thai experience!

There are over 300 temples in Chiang Mai, and plenty of these are located inside the Old Town. A few popular ones to visit are:

Treat Yourself to a Foot Massage

Thai massages are world-famous, and for good reason. There are plenty of parlours dotted around the city. You can choose from tiny salons offering $5 back massages. Or you could go slightly fancier and book yourself into somewhere like Fah Lanna Spa.

Take a Cooking Class

Learn to cook Thai food in a cooking class in Chiang Mai for 3 days

One of the best things to do in Chiang Mai is to take a cooking class. There are hundreds to choose from, but you can look at reviews if you book in advance online. Most cooking schools follow a similar routine. You’ll be picked up at your hotel and taken to a local market where you’ll choose ingredients for the meal you’re about to cook! You’ll learn all about the different herbs and spices that Thai food is famous for. Then you’ll follow the chef’s lead with the cooking. Find a place that lets you do the hard work. There’s no point in signing up for a cooking class where you just watch someone else do it for you!

 Enjoy the fruits of your labour and you’ll usually be given a booklet or e-book with the recipes in so that you can recreate the dishes at home. Usually, there will be a morning or afternoon class, so you can pick the one that suits your schedule in Chiang Mai.

What To Do In Chiang Mai: Day 2 – Spend it with the Elephants

In Chiang Mai, you’ll be close to some of nature’s most beautiful creatures – elephants! There are many different elephant sanctuaries across Thailand, but Chiang Mai offers some of the best places to see them in an ethical way.

 Unfortunately, so many tourists still want to ride elephants and see them perform tricks. These places treat their animals terribly, and it is not safe or ethical to visit them. In Chiang Mai there are four elephant sanctuaries that have the seal of approval from World Animal Protection – a global charity working to end animal cruelty. These sanctuaries are:

• Kindred Spirit Elephant Sanctuary (KSES)
• Burm and Emily’s Elephant Sanctuary (BEES)
• Chang Chill
• Elephant Nature Park

The first three are small, family-run businesses that rely so much on visitors and donations. Elephant Nature Park has had a little more funding but still needs support from tourists.

These places do not allow riding or any physical contact with the elephants. They have the elephants’ welfare at heart and their day-to-day lives revolve so heavily on making sure their animals are enjoying themselves. You can, however, walk with the elephants, help prepare vitamin-rich snacks, get involved with local schools + the communities, learn about the animals and just watch the elephants to your heart’s content. We’d highly recommend visiting one of these four sanctuaries to see elephants as nature intended – wild and free!

 KSES and BEES are both a few hours’ drive from the city centre, so you could choose to take part in the overnight programmes there. If you only want to spend one day with the elephants then visit either Chang Chill or Elephant Nature Park as they are only located around an hour’s drive from Chiang Mai.

What To Do In Chiang Mai: Day 3 – See the Waterfalls

Spend time at a waterfall to cool down from the Thai heat

Cool Down at a Waterfall

A great way to spend a day in Chiang Mai is to visit the Sticky Waterfalls also known as Bua Tong. These falls are around an hour’s car drive from the city centre of Chiang Mai, but totally worth it!

The name comes from the mineral deposits on the rocks that allow you to climb up them without slipping off. You can climb up the three tiers, all whilst the water is rushing down past you. There are ropes to help pull yourself up if you need them. You’d be surprised at how easy it is to walk up against the water!

The Sticky Waterfalls are surrounded by beautiful greenery and you can spend all day relaxing on the grass, chilling in the small pools or just enjoying the peace! There are a few vendors selling lunch and ice creams, so bring some small change!

You can find a songthaew (a converted van with benches in the back, typically red and everywhere in Chiang Mai) to take you. The trip should cost around 1200 baht for the driver to drive you there, wait and return you to the city centre.

Enjoy Chiang Mai Sunday Market

If your visit lands on a Sunday, then make your way over to the Sunday Walking Market. Starting at around 4 pm and ending past midnight, this is the place to go for cute souvenirs and delicious food!

Most people actually arrive as it starts to get dark. If you’d prefer to avoid the crowds then go earlier. The streets are cordoned off for pedestrian use only. There are hundreds of stalls selling everything from paintings, jewellery, candles and those famous elephant pants you’ve seen on backpackers! There’s also steaming bowls of Khao Soi, plates of Pad Thai and spring rolls. You’ll find plenty of fruit stalls – eat it fresh or have it in a smoothie! Don’t forget to try the ice cream pancake rolls too.

You could (and should) spend hours wandering along these streets of Chiang Mai. Use your haggling skills if you want to buy souvenirs, but don’t be insulting! Make sure everyone is happy with the price, not just you. If you find yourself trying to bargain a seller down for a few baht, consider what that money would mean to them instead of you.

Where To Stay In Chiang Mai

There are hundreds of hostels, hotels and apartments to choose from in Chiang Mai. Staying in Chiang Mai accommodation options inside the Old Town will cost you more but you’ll save on local transport. Accommodation a little further out might give you more space but you’ll have to consider how easy it is to reach everywhere else in the city. You’ll be able to find great backpacker hostels, lush private rooms and unbelievable boutique hotels in Chiang Mai – all for such amazing prices too!

This is a great place located just north of the Old Town. The prices are great and there are plenty of shared spaces as well as a pool table and rooftop! You can choose from a bed in a dormitory room or a private one which would be better for couples.

U Chiang Mai $$

U Chiang Mai is a gorgeous hotel set in the heart of the city. What makes it special is that you always have a full 24 hours to use the room. If you check in at 5 pm, you don’t check out until 5 pm the next day. That’s so much better than being chucked out by 10am like in most other hotels! Breakfast is also included (and you can have this at ANY time of day up until 9 pm!) The rooms are beautifully decorated and the pool is wonderful. There is a gym and free bikes for guests to use. They also do a fantastic happy hour and an excellent Thai-style afternoon tea!

Found in Southeast Asia, Thailand is known for temples, royal palaces, lush jungles, world-class diving, famous beaches and amazing food. It’s also known as being a cheap place to travel offering a lot for your hard earned bucks! It’s also home to many iconic places seen in a vast array of movies. Now is the time to get inspiration to organise a visit to this interesting country. Here are 19 suggestions of the best places to visit in Thailand to help you plan your own fantastic Thailand holiday.

When planning your holiday to Thailand there are two main areas to consider visiting. The first is mainland Thailand where you will find the capital Bangkok and other notable jungle areas like Chiang Mai. The second area is one of the many islands along its coast. FYI, Koh is Thai for island. If you want to visit an island or two, skip to the second part of this post where you will find plenty of island inspiration.

Best Places to Visit on Mainland Thailand

Bangkok

Wat Benchamabophit Dusitvanaram, Bangkok

Bangkok is the capital of Thailand and is where most people arrive in Thailand. A few days at least should be spent here to discover this vibrant city. It is easy to get around however, if it is your first visit I suggest doing to the hop on hop off bus tour of Bangkok first as it will take you to all the tourist spots and provide a commentary about the place. Then you can decide which ones to return to to spend more time. Then purchase a Go City Pass and use the local transport to get around.

Definitely visit and admire The Grand Palace before visiting one of the many unique temples like Wat Arun and Wat Pho and Wat Benchamabophit Dusitvanaram, a Buddhist temple in the Dusit District of Bangkok. It is also known as the marble temple, and it was my favourite on my holiday in Bangkok. Other best things to do in Bangkok are to shop till you drop at the Srinagarindra Train Night Market. Eat yummy food on Khaosan Road before enjoying a cocktail at a rooftop bar. And don’t forget to explore the famous Khao San Road.

I found 3 days in Bangkok plenty. I was all templed-out by then!

Doi Inthanon National Park

Wachirathan Waterfall, Doi Inthanon National Park

Northern Thailand is the best place to experience Thailand’s mountain landscape and Doi Inthanon National Park just outside Chiang Mai is one of the most accessible. Home to Thailand’s highest peak, Doi Inthanon that towers 2565 metres above sea level, the trip from Chiang Mai will take about 90 minutes.

With natural trails, temples, waterfalls and small villages home to the Karen People the park offers a great range of things to see and do no matter what type of traveller you are. You can either join a tour or make your own way to the park via local transport.

The most famous site in the park is the Twin Pagodas. These two pagodas were built five years apart, the first as a memorial to King Rama 9 and the second for the Queen of Thailand when she turned 5 years old.  The pagodas are surrounded by manicured gardens and at most times of the year give fantastic views over the landscape below. For many visitors this is the reason they make the day trip to Doi Inthanon however there is much more to see here if you have time.

Try to take at least one of the nature walks and stop at a couple of waterfalls. Wachirathan waterfall is a must. It’s located along the highway on the road just inside the park and is visible from the car park.

For a great day out remember to check the weather, being the highest point in Thailand it is much cooler up here than in Chiang Mai. It can also be quite wet so pack a rain jacket and wear shoes with some decent grip if you are planning to hike. Bring along some cash for your entry to the pagodas and to buy some souvenirs or food from the locals.

Krabi

Railay Beach, Krabi

Krabi is definitely one of the best places to visit in Thailand. Especially those who are traveling to Thailand for the first time will enjoy this magical Thai destination. This beautiful region is located in the south of Thailand on the Andaman Sea and is easily accessible by flight from Bangkok.

Famous for its fascinating rugged limestone cliffs, dense green jungle, snow-white sandy beaches, turquoise sea and breathtaking islands! The resorts of Ao Nang and picturesque Klong Muang are a particularly good recommendation for a vacation.

During a visit to Krabi, you can visit numerous sights. A highlight for me personally was the peninsula Railay with the world famous Railay Beach and the even more beautiful Phra Nang Beach. Definitely recommended is also a boat trip to the offshore islands such as Koh Hong, Koh Poda and Chicken Island, where there is a chicken head rock.

But that’s not all! If you like, you can go kayaking, explore the mangrove forests, hike to viewpoints, swim in the Emerald Pool or climb the countless steps of the high Tiger Cave Temple. Also nice is a visit to the Elephant Sanctuary Krabi, which is dedicated to the welfare of former elephants

Ayutthaya

Discover ruined temples at Ayutthaya

Ayutthaya is the former capital of Siam, which was destroyed by the Burmese army. Siam is the former kingdom and country of Thailand. Today, Ayutthaya is a vast area containing ruins of temples, but you will also find active temples there. What made it all famous in the last years, is a stone Buddha head overgrown by tree roots. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is full of historical buildings worth exploring on a dedicated day trip. Add the Ayutthaya temple ruins (Wat Mahathat) to your bucket list. As well as the oldest temple with the huge golden Buddha (Wat Phanan Choeng) and the active monastery (Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon). It is recommended to get a guide with a transportation option because you will actually get to know more about the history and customs of the area. Besides, Ayutthaya is massive, and the heat is unforgiving, so getting around by car or tuktuk is a huge plus point! A guide will also help you understand and respect religious customs, which can be a bit overwhelming if you are new to Thailand or South-East Asia.

Loy Krathong Festival

Enjoy the krathongs at the Loy Krathong Festival

For the ultimate bucket list experience in Thailand, visit during the breathtaking Loy Krathong festival.

Loy Krathong is celebrated in November during the full moon of the 12th Thai month. (Meaning it’s on a different date every year.) It’s frequently associated with the worship of Buddha and the water goddess. It’s not necessarily considered a religious festival.

Small krathongs (floating vessels) decorated with flowers, candles and incense are placed on to water after making a wish and or symbolically letting go of negativity and allowing it to float away. The result is thousands of krathongs lit up and floating on rivers and lakes around Thailand.

This festival is celebrated all over the country. For a popular and favorite place of many to celebrate, head to Chiang Mai. Here Loy Krathong is celebrated simultaneously with Yi Peng which includes floating lanterns. You won’t want to miss it!

A much-loved Sunday night activity in Chiang Mai Thailand is the Sunday Night Walking Street Market. As dusk settles over Chiang Mai Old City, crowds begin to gather at ThaPae Gate to visit the markets which stretch along Ratchadamnoen Road and beyond.

Here you will find an assortment of stalls selling an interesting selection of Thai handicrafts, jewellery, clothing, and street food. As you browse the stalls you will be surprised by the quality and choice of articles on sale. Many having been produced by skilled artisans and artists. If you are hungry, you are in for a real treat as there is a wide range of local Chiang Mai delicacies to try.

Best of all is the atmosphere, the friendly banter of the street stall owners. The beat of Thai music. Sizzle and rich aroma of delicious Thai cooking. Bright colours of the wares and the golden glow of the lights as they reflect off the Buddhist temples.

Make sure to visit the Sunday Night Walking Street Market on your next trip to Chiang Mai. The market begins around 5pm and finishes around 10pm.

Bau Tong Sticky Waterfall, Chiang Mai

Bau Tong Sticky Waterfall

One of the best places to visit when you are in Thailand is the Bau Tong Sticky Waterfalls in Chaing Mai. They are not like any other waterfalls you have ever seen in the world. The crystal clear water here flows from a natural spring. Over the years the minerals have coated the limestone rocks and made them sticky. You can climb directly up the cascading water or travel down, either way, your feet will grip the rocks.

To get to Bau Tong you can either day a guided tour or drive the short hour outside of Chiang Mai yourself. Once you arrive in the beautiful there are three different levels to explore. The first one is the most popular and most likely the most crowded as well. You can walk down the wooden stairs to the right to see all the different layers of the falls.

Then take your time playing around and pretending to be spiderman as you climb up the walls. No matter what age you are you will have so much fun. You could spend all day at the Sicky Waterfall park, there is a little market near the falls where you can purchase souvenirs, food, drinks, and even restaurants too. Most people bring picnics to enjoy at one of the many tables around. Plus, it is free to enter making it one of the best things to see in Thailand!

Elephant Nature Park

Elephants at the Elephant Nature Park

Elephant Nature Park, located close to Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand, is an absolute must-see for visitors to Thailand. The park is an ethical elephant sanctuary, where you get to witness the majestic creatures in their natural habitat and learn more about global conservation. It’s an absolutely amazing place that should be on the top of your list of things to do whether you’re visiting Chiang Mai with kids or without.

Sukhothai Historical Park

Wat Mahathat temple

Located in central Thailand, Sukhothai Historical Park is a must-visit destination for history buffs traveling to the country. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers visitors a look at one of the original Thai capitals – from the 13th century. Get a sense of what life was like in the kingdom of Sukhothai as you wander through the beautifully preserved ruins of ancient temples and palaces.

Sukhothai Historical Park includes five areas, three requiring an entrance fee. The other parts have scattered smaller stupas, temple ruins, and statues that can all be visited free of cost while biking or simply roaming around the area.

Undoubtedly, the most captivating area within Sukhothai Historical Park is its central zone. Note that this part of the park tends to be rather crowded with tourists. One of the most famous sites in the park is the Wat Mahathat temple, a famous stone Buddha head that has become an iconic symbol of the city. The grounds also display a number of notable historic structures, including Wat Sri Sawai and Wat Tra Phang Ngoen.

Outside the park, don’t miss eating a regional favorite, the famed Sukhothai noodles – thin rice noodles served in a flavorful broth with chicken or pork.

Kanchanaburi

Bridge over the River Kwai

Just two hours outside bustling Bangkok is one of Southeast Asia’s most relaxing places to visit. Kanchanaburi is beautiful and has some of the country’s best historical and natural sights. The top attraction in Kanchanaburi is the infamous Kwai River Bridge. The steel bridge spanning the Kwai River was a major point in the Burma railway the Japanese tried to build and was the scene of some of the most gruesome events in Asia during World War II. 

After walking across the bridge, visit the World War II war cemetery in town. The well-kept cemetery is the final resting place of thousand of POWs who lost their lives while working on the railway line.

To see the area’s natural beauty, rent a scooter and ride out to Erewan Falls National Park. The road goes through verdant landscapes, and it’s just a great drive. Several stunning waterfalls are scattered throughout the national park. You can even swim in them, so remember to bring your trunks. 

While it’s possible to visit Kanchanaburi on a day trip from Bangkok, rather spend the night at one of the floating guesthouses on the Kwai River. It’s quite magical.

Nakhon Lampang 

Temple, Nakhon Lampang

Nakhon Lampang in Thailand is an absolute must-visit destination for any traveler who wants to experience the best of the country and a place that hasn’t lost its character with over-tourism. Situated in Northern Thailand, this city is known for its beautiful temples, stunning landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture. It’s also home to some of Thailand’s most iconic monuments and attractions, such as the Lampang Elephant Conservation Center, Wat Phra Kaew Don Tao Temple, and Chae Son National Park.  

One of the experiences we enjoyed in Nakhon Lampang was taking a horse cart for a little tour around the town. The cart will take you around the main sites and is a nice way to get your bearings in this lovely town.

If you like to visit Night Markets in Thailand, don’t miss the Kad Kongta Night Market every Saturday and Sunday. Here you can find many street food options and local artisanal products. There are many great restaurants to try including lunch at Khao Mun Kai Ha Yak where you can try the tasty dish of poached chicken and seasoned rice, served with chili sauce and cucumbers. Or Aroy One Baht restaurant with many tasty dishes including their rice for 1 baht!

Koh Mak is one of the lesser known and visited island in Thailand. It’s situated in the eastern gulf of Thailand close to the Cambodian border. The island is only about 10 km wide and 5 km long, which is part of its charm.

Around Koh Mak you will find a lot of places to snorkel because the water is crystal clear. One of the first spots to go to is the pier at Coco Cape Resort. You will see fish, coral and even sea urchins. Just hop in via the pier and start swimming.

Another great spot is the beach at Monkey Resort. The only downside is that sometimes there are a lot of sea urchins in the shallow part, which makes it a bit difficult to navigate. 

If you want to explore the area around Koh Mak, book a snorkeling tour with BB Divers. They take you to a couple of location off-shore that are just beautiful.

James Bond Island, Phuket

The famous James Bond Island located in Phan Nga Bay – Phuket is an absolute bucket list destination in Thailand. The great thing is that you can visit the island for less than $50 on a day trip!

Leaving on the boat from Phuket you will go past many breathtaking limestone cliffs. Then you arrive at the magical James Bond Island – featured in the movie “The Man with the Golden Gun”. Before the 1974 movie, starring Roger Moore and Christopher Lee literally no international tourists had heard about James Bond Island. Now, it’s popularity has exploded.

The beautiful thin limestone cliff of James Bond Island has a really unusual shape and rises majestically out the sea. It is very slim at the bottom and gets wider towards the top, so its precarious position is so impressive to see.

You don’t go onto James Bond Island. It is a really rocky pinnacle and so its beauty needs to be admired from a small beach opposite it on Koh Ping Ghan. Despite it getting busy during peak seasons, there are plenty spots where you can take great photographs without getting other people in.

Koh Phangan

Thriving digital nomad scene and yoga community on Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan is a small island in the Gulf of Thailand located right next to its bigger ‘sister’ Koh Samui. The island has become famous worldwide for of its wild Full Moon parties. Yet, it’s so much more than that. On Koh Phangan, you’ll find lush nature, perfect beaches, a high number of temples, a thriving digital nomad scene, a yoga community, and all the amenities one may need.

I loved how diverse Koh Phangan was. Every day could be different. You could go hiking to a secluded beach, to waterfalls, or climb a peak. Spend a day on a beach, perfectly happy. Work from one of the many cafés ranging from low key Thai to stylish ‘hipster’ ones. Or you could taste all possible Thai dishes, in local markets and restaurants, as well as cuisine from all over the world.

If needed, you could make your trip low-cost by staying in a simple bungalow on a beach or in a hostel. Yet, if you’d rather go for luxury, you could choose one of the many amazing Koh Phangan resorts.

Koh Kood Island

Pristine beaches at Koh Kood Island, Thailand

Koh Kood is a serene island located in the Gulf of Thailand, approximately 30 km from Trat, which serves as a ferry gateway to the island. You can easily get to Koh Kood from Bangkok, as many companies provide bus and ferry combo trips that take you directly to the hotel in Koh Kood.

Because of its remote location, Koh Kood isn’t affected by mass tourism, so you’ll enjoy nature at its best. I would advise renting a motorbike because this is the best way to explore the island’s treasures: waterfalls, beaches, and many mouthwatering restaurants. The average price to rent a motorbike is around 300 THB per day.

If you fancy visiting waterfalls, the best time to see them is during or shortly after the rainy season (June to mid-October). Otherwise, make sure you visit the scenic 800-meter-long Bang Bao Beach, the paradise-like Ao Tapao Beach, the Ao Yai Fisherman Village, the 500-year-old Makayuk tree, or rent a kayak and explore the mangrove estuaries. If you love diving, there are a few agencies that organize day trips from the island.

Out of many of Koh Kood’s eateries, my favorite place is the Relax House and Restaurant. I won’t lie if I say that they serve the best Thai food on the island. Actually, the place is so popular that you have to reserve a table in advance.

Sail Rock is one of the most incredible underwater landmarks in the oceans of SouthEast Asia. Called Hin Bai by locals, it is the tip of a large underwater rock that sticks out a couple of metres above the surface. Underwater Sail Rock is a spectacular reef populated by massive schools of fish and beautiful marine life of all shapes and sizes. There are many good dive schools in Koh Tao that dive here. Strong currents bring a diversity of pelagic fish. Chevron Barracuda and Big eye Trevally, while schooling Longfin Batfish and Giant Groupers also live on the pinnacles. The shark life around Sail Rock is world renowned and divers can see Bull sharks and even enormous whale sharks while exploring this area. This amazing pinnacle is located between the islands of Koh Tao and Koh Phangan in the Gulf of Thailand. It is often rated as the best spot for Scuba diving in Thailand. This amazing underwater landmark is easy to reach from Koh Tao, Koh Samui and Koh Phangan islands.
