Bed bugs. Ewwww, I hear ya! Bed bugs, who wants to talk about bed bugs? Well, I do!

Travelling the world as I do, I sleep in beds that have been slept in by hundreds, maybe thousands before me. Some beds have been so clean and wonderful to sleep in while others have left me wondering how clean it is! And a couple of times after waking up with a rash I’ve left accommodation early because I’ve discovered bed bugs. Ewwww, yeah, that’s right. So now I always check for bed bugs. And if you are wondering how to check for bed bugs and what to do if you find them, read on.

Bed bugs are just one of those things we encounter while living and working abroad and travelling the world. For me, they rank up there with Bali Belly, another issue that can effect our health and travel enjoyment.

In this post we look at how to check for them, what to do if you find any, and how to stop one hopping into your bag for a holiday with you.

What are Bed Bugs?

Bed bugs are small oval shaped insects that can grow to about as big as an apple seed. They love to feed on humans or animals by sucking their blood. Ewwww. Bed bugs get their name because they like to hide in bedding and mattresses. And yes, you can see them if they are in your bed due to their size. So one of the first things to do before you hop in to a new bed is to scan the sheets. Yep, those little blood suckers can be seen by our eyes!

this is what those cheeky buggers look like – the size of an apple seed

What Attracts Bed Bugs?

It seems bed bugs are primarily attracted to scents associated with carbon dioxide, body heat and the scent of human skin. Lucky us. And these scents are often found in beds.

It should be noted that bed bugs aren’t a sign of dirty accommodation or poor personal hygiene by guests. The bugs are usually there because they have hitchhiked in luggage and have been introduced to a place. This includes a bed that has attractions they like and that helps them thrive.

So as travellers, we need to help to reduce the attractions for them. I’ve mentioned how we can do this further on in this post. And you can also only hope that your accommodation changes the bedding after every guest has left. As this helps to reduce their numbers if bedding is removed and changed.

What do Bed Bugs Do to You?

Bed bugs can bite and some people react to their bite more than others. Their bites can cause rashes very similar to mosquito bites. Very annoying!

How to Check for Bed Bugs

Before you even book accommodation, read the reviews to see if anyone has mentioned bed bugs. Also read how the owners of the accommodation responded as no accommodation wants a reputation for bed bugs and should get rid of any asap. And if they have, and there is now no problem, use your discretion as to whether you would book accommodation at this place.

On arrival at your accommodation, keep your luggage away from the bed. This is because those little suckers love to hide in mattresses and bases.

Check your bedding. Remove the sheets and pillows and examine the mattress. Signs of bed bugs can include brown spots which is their poo and any bugs themselves. Use your flashlight to see them.

Unfortunately they don’t always reside in beds. They can make their home behind picture frames, in furniture and in cracks.

What Do You Do if you see Bed Bugs in Your Bed?

Leave if you can

Vacuum your bed

Wash the bed sheets

Travel with and use scents that repel bed bugs, such as tea tree oil or eucalyptus oil which is a natural insecticide and repellent. It works by masking the smell of carbon dioxide which is what attracts bed bugs. You can use these oils as a deterrent by spritzing them on your mattress. This is what I do, I travel with tea tree oil. It is also a great antiseptic if your happen to get a small open wound or cut.

As you may not be able to do any of these things, well, number 4, and may not even see them when you get in to bed, hopefully they will leave you alone! I wish.

How to Deal with Bed Bugs if You Find Them While Traveling

If you find bed bugs, document everything and notify management. If you say something, you may be relocated to another bed/room where no bed bugs are or be given a refund. Hopefully, the problem can be rectified.

What to do if you get bitten

If you wake up in bed and you’ve been bitten there are a couple of things you can do.

Shower and wash any bite marks or rash with soap and water to stop any infection.

If itchy, apply an anti-itch product or antiseptic cream to the infected area, like tea tree oil. And/or take an antihistamine as these help with allergic reactions. Try not to scratch any bites as you could turn them into a sore.

Preventing Bed Bugs from Coming Home with You

If you noticed bed bugs in your bed or room, take steps to deter them hopping in your bags. The best luggage to travel with is hard-cased luggage, as it is more difficult for bed bugs to attach to such materials. Also pack your clothing in re-sealable plastic bags for the same reason. Maybe spray your bag with some tea tree or eucalyptus oil.

Post Travel

Bed bugs are particularly problematic to treat and hopefully, they didn’t hitch a ride to your next destination or home with you. Not good news for travellers who haven’t finished their journey. What things can you do to help get rid of bed bugs in your luggage?

Sprays may kill the bed bugs but not their eggs. So what do you do?

Vacuum your luggage and dispose of vacuum bags.

Wash all your clothes.

Use oils to mask carbon dioxide by spritzing them on your bed and other furniture where bed bugs thrive.

High temperature apparently kills bed bugs. Adult bed bugs die at 48 degrees Celsius (119 degrees Fahrenheit) – so you could pump up the heating! Or perhaps put your clothes in a hot dryer.

Final Words on Bed Bugs

I know all this seems a lot to do. However, there is nothing worse than waking up with bite marks all over you. Knowledge and a few simple precautions should help you cope with bed bugs and the issues they cause. So now I’m off to check for bed bugs in my bed tonight and have a shower.

Some of the 8 ways to cope with homesickness abroad is to keep busy, meet people and travel – here’s me with new friends visiting Munich

You’ve planned to move abroad for ages. You have saved, chosen the country, said goodbye to family and friends and landed in a foreign land excited and so ready to begin your new life living abroad. But what, you feel down! You are missing your family and friends and you wonder whether living abroad is your thing! And you could easily jump on a plane and head back home. What do you do? How do you cope with homesickness abroad?

Of course there are going to be times you miss home. When I first moved overseas it was the anniversaries and birthdays that brought on my homesickness. But I learnt to cope with homesickness abroad. In this post I will provide my suggestions on strategies to adopt to help you cope with homesickness. They are based on the ways I helped myself with homesickness while living in the UK for 4 years on a UK working holiday.

I did find it was the first couple of months that was worse for homesickness, but there are ways to help you survive the first few months abroad.

So what is Homesickness?

When I looked up the meaning of homesickness I read it is the distress caused by being away from home. And when you travel abroad, you will leave home and often think of home during your travels. For some people, leaving home causes them to suffer depression, anxiousness and sometimes withdraw. So how do you cope with homesickness when abroad? Here are some suggestions to ease the pain.

Strategies to Ease Homesickness

Be as Busy as You Can

To avoid thinking of home constantly be as busy as you can. Of course you will get reminders of home while out and about. You will see things that you think a friend or family member would be interested to see. There could be a new food that you know your friend or family member would love to eat too! Lots of simple everyday things will remind you of home. So keep on being busy, and try not to think too much of home.

Make Your New Country like Home

To help you avoid homesickness, adopt and adapt to your new place. The quicker you immerse yourself in the new country, discovering the culture and the food, the sooner your negative thoughts of being away from home, will lesson. So get into your new life abroad. How?

Make new friends

Celebrate the local events and traditions

Decorate your room like home

Keep yourself open to trying new things

Enjoy where you are and keep busy

Focus on the Positive

Yes, focus on the positives of why you moved abroad. My main aim of moving abroad was to travel and experience life in another country. So keep asking yourself why you have come to live abroad in another country? And concentrate on those things. As I mentioned, I wanted to travel. So most weekends I would go away to a new city or area in the UK. And I discovered a passion – a passion for history and I learnt so much about British history from seeing castles, the countryside and beautiful old buildings in towns. This made moving abroad for me a very positive experience. Maybe you will find your passion too!

Exercise

I’m throwing this one in here as exercising has been proven as a massive positive impact on mental and physical health. So keep up any exercise routines you may have had at home. Or start a new one as this could lead to you meeting other people and relationships with other people can also impact homesickness. Maybe join a yoga class or a hiking group! There is plenty of different types of exercise.

Meet like-minded people

One of the best ways to cope with homesickness abroad is to meet like-minded people. Having someone from your own country or an expat from another country can have a positive impact on you. Knowing someone that fully understands how you feel about being homesick, can really help you. You can swap homesickness stories and keep each other positive about missing home. So how do you meet like-minded people? I have met many by staying in hostels with lots of International travellers, going on tours and doing expat clubs.

When I first moved to the UK, I joined the ‘Walkabout Club’. Many Aussie expats would go there on a Friday night to listen to music, drink and have a good time. I made a couple of friends there. Then I went on a trip through Europe and another friend. There were also flatmates that became friends. One even took me home to her home country for Christmas one time. Having a Christmas in Sweden in the snow was totally different to having a Christmas in Australia in the sunshine. But being kept busy and discovering a new culture was a great way to not be homesick!

Consider the Advantages of the Country you Currently Live

You moved to this country as you saw opportunities you didn’t have in your own country. Every country has its pros and cons, but remember why you moved there. Was it to study? Or learn a language? Perhaps to further your career? Maybe to enjoy the weather?

My main aim of moving to the UK was to live, work and play in the UK. And I was able to experience that. Plus I used London as a base to further my travels through Europe, Scandinavia and beyond. I kept reminding myself of this by regularly traveling and this helped any homesickness I was feeling.

Stay in Touch with Home

When you move abroad, there are many things that will change, including a time difference. But that doesn’t mean you can’t stay in touch. Staying in touch will let you know what is going on at home so you know you aren’t missing out on too much while living abroad. When I first moved abroad the only way to stay in touch was by phone – a land line. But now, there are so many ways – email, txt and FaceTime. So get your little piece of home to keep your mental health upbeat.

Travel Home Occasionally

Visiting home occasionally can help you decide where you would like to be. That’s if you can get home. For me, it was a 24 hour plane ride to get home, so of course, it wasn’t done regularly. But if you only live an hour or two away, go home, get your fix of home and then go back to your new life abroad!

Are You Ready to Lesson Homesickness

Everyone feels homesickness at some time when you move abroad. But staying positive, active and adapting to your new country should help homesickness lesson. Enjoy your time abroad, hopefully without too much homesickness. Have you had homesickness while living abroad? I’d love to hear if you have other strategies I could add to my list.

Hello nature, goodbye stress in the great outdoors

Travel can sometimes get you down, particularly long-term travel. If your travels are getting you down what do you do? Well, the best way is to say hello nature, goodbye stress by getting outside. People set off into the wilderness for different reasons – recreation, exercise or family fun. Did you know that scientific studies over the years have proved spending time out in nature causes stress levels to dissipate. Sometimes even disappear or become totally meaningless. Therefore, if your stress levels are high and your mental health is suffering and this is interfering with your travels, the best thing to do is get into nature.

While living and working in the UK for four years, I found sometimes in the depths of winter I lost focus on my travels. It was during this time I realised getting outside was a great help to me, and is the inspiration for this post to help my fellow travellers, you. In this post I elaborate on the health benefits of getting outside and offer suggestions on how to get outside while you travel abroad.

The Benefits of Spending Time Outdoors

There are a number of benefits to getting outside while travelling abroad, and they are:

1. Nature and Cognitive Benefits

What is cognitive you ask? Well cognitive is activities your brain does like thinking, remembering, imagining, reasoning and using language. These activities are constantly happening in your brain. During the day your brain deals with a lot, it is always absorbing things and can become overloaded and overwhelmed which can mean your cognitive tasks of making decisions become blurred. Simple tasks of making decisions can become hard work and you can lose your focus. Are you having trouble deciding where to travel to next? Hmmmm.

Studies have proven that heading into nature, even for a short time helps let your brain unload and restore its focus. I find a quick walk outside often helps me make decisions. Now don’t think you need to go on a day-hike for this to happen. If you are working while traveling having your lunch break outside in a green space can do the trick. It has been proved there is a powerful connection between natural open spaces and your brain activity. So when things get tough, go outside for a walk ‘to clear your head’.

2. Nature and Mood Benefits

Anxiety, stress, anger and even depression are too common in our world. Studies have shown these conditions are on the rise due to the correlation between our time spent inside behind a computer or TV screen – that could be either working or playing. Even though these moods are unfortunately a part of life nature can help reduce them. Yep, being in nature can help reduce high levels of negative moods. Nature does this because it helps you have pleasant feelings, thus your brain releases ‘happy hormones’ thus lowering stress, fear, anger and depression levels.

3. Nature and The Human Connection

Studies have shown, yes, I’m saying this again, there is a connection between nature and humans. It is a natural thing this connection but sometimes it gets lost because of the modern world we are living in. But the science is there, scientists have been saying it for years – go outside into nature and you will be happier if you do. Connect to nature and in return, say goodbye to stress.

4. Nature can Increase Social Connections

Without knowing getting outdoors and being active outdoors can create and increase social connections. Even though many of us like solo adventures doing things with others outside can lead us to friendships we might not have made otherwise. Maybe you’ll meet other walkers in the park and start walking with them or perhaps join a club and go on social outings outside.

5. Nature and Physical Benefits

As well as the mental connection of being outdoors, when you are doing activities you are gaining physical benefits. By doing activities that increase your heart rate at times, you are helping your health by increasing your fitness and maintaining a healthy body weight. As you do this, you can begin to increase the travel experiences you have. Do you want to climb Mount Fuji, trek the Himalayas – well you need to start by getting outside.

Ways to Get Outside While Travelling

Now you know there are many benefits to you by getting outside while travelling, increasing your time with nature as you travel the world is as simple as incorporating outdoor time into your travels. A lot of things are what the locals do, and doing what the locals do helps you to not look like a tourist. Here’s some suggestions:

If you can’t get outside into nature, bring nature indoors. Having a plant or a few plants around you that you can look, can help with positive feelings. Maybe start a little garden with some herbs and vegetables. Digging in the dirt is a great way to interact with nature.

Start walking to work or to the supermarket.

Sit outside in your back yard. Take your shoes off and let your feet feel the ground underneath. Or look up into the sky – something you can do anytime, day or night.

Go to your local park and sit amongst the trees in the open space.

Pack a picnic and sit on a rug enjoying some food and nature at the same time.

Head to your nearest National Park and go for a walk or hike. It doesn’t have to be a long hike. And this can be a great way to build your physical fitness while de-stressing your mind.

Get away on a weekend camping trip. If you don’t have camping gear, there are plenty of places you could rent for the weekend that are in nature – what about a treehouse? Or house or pet sitting in a country town or area?

Nature doesn’t have to be somewhere on a mountain, it can be by the beach or a lake. Water is known to have a calming effect on the mind as well and offer great health benefits. You could swim, surf, fish, kayak, sail, scuba dive or whale watch!

Start practicing yoga and go on a yoga retreat.

Buy a bike and go on long rides.

Take up a sport – golf or tennis perhaps!

TIP: My biggest tip for keeping sane while living and working abroad and travelling full-time is to keep it regular. Regular activity outside can keep your mind clear and de-stressed so you can keep on travelling longer and travelling better.

Are You Ready to say Hello Nature. Goodbye Stress?

Being connected to the outdoors isn’t as hard as you think and I hope this post has both encouraged and inspired you to get outdoors. Even a one hour lunch break sitting in a park will help keep your mind focussed. When life gets too much, even when travelling, stop, say hello nature, joy and calmness and goodbye to stress and poor mental health. OK, I’m off for a walk – how about you?

One of the best things about travelling the world is visiting different countries and enjoying their local cuisine. From Mexican dishes to Spanish to Asian delights, discovering local foods can make for a great holiday, but it can also break your holiday. Unfortunately, without knowing, a meal can make you sick. Yep, one of the most common sicknesses travellers get while travelling is Bali belly or traveller’s diarrhoea and it isn’t pleasant if you get it. Some people get very sick from it and it can derail your entire trip. Having had it a couple of times myself while travelling I have put together this post on Bali belly – what it is, how to avoid it and what to do if you get it.

TIP: You never know when you may get sick, so ensure you take out travel insurance. For long-term travel I use SafetyWing or WorldNomads.

What is Bali Belly (Traveller’s Diarrhoea)?

Bali Belly is a term many travellers use when they become ill after eating or drinking contaminated food or water while travelling. Unfortunately, we don’t always see or taste the harmful bacteria that can be in some foods and drink. If this bacteria is consumed it can cause havoc in your guts as your body tries to fight it. It fights the bacteria by trying to get rid of it and this is why diarrhoea and/or vomiting occurs.

Why is Traveller’s Diarrhoea called Bali Belly?

It has been labeled Bali Belly mainly because many people catch it on holiday in Bali. However, it can be caught in other countries and while at home.

Other Names for Bali Belly

Bali Belly is a popular name for travellers diarrhoea, food poisoning and gastro but it is can be called by other names, particular in countries where travellers try spicy and different foods to what they are use to eating. Names you may also here are Delhi Belly, Montezuma’s Revenge and Rangoon Runs.

How Common is Bali Belly?

Bali Belly is ironically very common. It can occur anytime in any place. You don’t have to be travelling in another country to get it.

What are Bali Belly Symptoms?

Bali belly symptoms can vary from being mild to severe and they usually come on fast. Initially you may feel unease before vomiting and/or diarrhoea sets in. But you know you have it if you have any of the following:

Abdominal cramps and pain with loose stools (diarrheoa) causing you to frequent the toilet often.

Nausea or vomiting.

Dizziness and weakness.

Loss of appetite.

Mild fever.

How long does Bali Belly Last?

The thing about Bali belly is really about how sick you get. Depending on the severity of your Bali Belly, it can last 24 hours with more severe cases lasting a couple of days. If you are affected longer than a few days, go and see a doctor. While Bali belly is no fun, it is the fatigue and dehydration that comes with it that can be even worse. And receiving treatment from a doctor maybe the only way to move on from it.

How to Help Prevent Bali Belly

<img width="800" height="600" src="https://liveworkplaytravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/StreetFood.jpg" alt="Asian Lady At her Street Food Stall Making Food.

Be careful eating street food on your travels

Unfortunately there are no foolproof methods to stop Bali belly however, there are ways to combat it. The first way to prevent Bali belly would be to not consume food or drink with harmful bacteria in it. Not happening, as we all like to taste the local cuisines. It is also tricky to prevent as you cannot see it or taste it so you mostly don’t know you are consuming harmful bacteria until it is too late! There are things you can do to help prevent it from occurring and everything you can do to avoid Bali belly will be a blessing. After all, prevention is the best method!

Eat Cooked Food. Be very wary of what you are eating. That doesn’t mean consume only dry biscuits and filtered water. But know what you are eating. Since the bugs can be in the food, ensure your food is cooked to kill any bacteria.

Be Cautious when Eating Street Food. Street food is some of my favourite food yet, it can also be dangerous. One of the wisest tips I ever received while travelling was to check out where the street food is being cooked. Have a look to see the vendor has a good garbage system. What I mean is, where are the dirty plates being washing? Is the rubbish away from the cooking area? Trust me, these checks can help you choose food from a ‘clean’ street vendor. I would be extra cautious when it rains. Rain water can carry contaminants making the hygiene of street vendors premises not so good. I usually avoid eating at roadside food vendors when it rains.

Don’t drink tap water. As frugal travellers, we often carry a water bottle. Be wary when filling up your water bottle as not all tap water is safe to drink. Most people buy bottled water as they travel and fill their water bottle up with that. Also consider travelling with a water bottle with a built-in filter or travel with water purifying tables.

Be wary of the Ice. If the water is contaminated, more than likely so is the ice. I suggest forgoing ice in your drinks in some countries.

Wash your fruits and vegetables well before eating them. Many fruits and vegetables are very tempting but unwashed fruit and veggies can have nasty bugs living on them. Make sure you wash them properly before you eat them. I like to add a little vinegar to the water I wash my fruit and veggies – this is just added protection for me to help kill any bugs. If I can’t wash them thoroughly I try to eat things I can de-skin, like a banana.

Take medications such as Travelan and Gastro Stop Tablets. These tables when consumed before you eat a meal, line your gastrointestinal tract with bacteria-fighting antibodies so if you happen to consume the nasties things, they will fight them to prevent you from being sick. You can purchase Travelan Tablets here.

Avoid visiting some countries. Personally, I wouldn’t not visit a country because I was worried about getting Bali Belly. But there are some countries in Central and East Asia, the Middle East, South America and a few Caribbean islands I would suggest you would want to take more precautions in than others.

If you unfortunately find yourself with Bali belly the good news is it often resolves itself on its own. However, there are things you can consume as soon as you get symptoms to help alleviate them. These include:

Eat an Apple without the skin. Apples have soluble fibre and when consumed form a gel-like consistency in your stool, thus helping to stop diarrhoea.

Charcoal available from many pharmacies acts as a sponge, soaking up the harmful bacteria.

Take a medication before or at onset of symptoms such as Gastro-Stop or Travelan Tabs. They say they can receive symptoms within 1-3 hours after taking.

Stay hydrated. Dehydration can occur from the diarrhoea and vomiting. So consuming plenty of water and particularly drinks packed with electrolytes will help. My mum used to give me a glass of lemonade (sprite) and a packet of chips (crisps) to help me. These two things often helped me feel better. A little fruit juice can also help.

Seek medical help. If the Bali belly is severe and you are unwell for more than a couple of days, seek medical help. One of my friends had Bali belly so bad the doctor gave her a shot in the bottom of something and it helped and a day or so later, she was much better. Very drained, but better. I suggest you seek medical help before you are incapable of moving because you are so sick. Get a friend or the hotel receptionist to help. This is when medical insurance comes in handy.

Are You Ready to Travel and Avoid Bali Belly?

Bali Belly has been an issue for travellers, and everyone really, for a long time. By being a little cautious about what you put in your mouth along with taking precautions such as Travelan tablets, hopefully you will avoid getting Bali Belly during your travels. Have you been unlucky enough to catch the bug? Tell me about your experience in the comments below.

Heartbreak is unfortunately a common part of life, and it does really hurt. We’ve all been there at some time in our life and it is safe to say that we all try to avoid experiencing heartbreak again. It usually happens when a relationship comes to an end. That being with a romantic partner, a family member, a loved pet and even a job. The stress from the loss can lead to a broken heart. So if you are newly alone, this post is for you. It is about healing a broken heart with travel.

What is a Broken Heart?

Heartbreak is a metaphor we use to describe how we are feeling after a break up. But you can also have a medically broken heart. Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy is the medical name for a syndrome that can be caused from the stress of heartbreak. The sadness you feel can cause the left ventricle of your heart to become ‘stunned’ or paralysed. And you can feel symptoms like shortness of breath, dizziness, nausea and vomiting and sometimes strong chest pains.

Why Does a Broken Heart Hurt so Much?

It seems, our brain registers the emotional pain of a broken heart similar to physical pain. This is why you can feel like your heart has been ripped out! It also seems hormones have something to do with it. Love is addictive, like a drug and our brain releases happy hormones, particularly Dopamine and oxytocin when we are in love. When we have a ‘break up’ the hormone level drops and is replaced with the stress hormone cortisol. Too much cortisol can contribute to anxiety and nausea and other negative mental and physical symptoms associated with heartbreak. Tending to this heartbreak can feel like a full-time job and you often wake up wondering when these feelings will pass.

How Do You Heal a Broken Heart?

I’m going to add here that old adage ‘you will heal with time’, because it is true. Over time, all the stress from the ending of the relationship will become less. But one way in particular, and what this post is really about is healing your broken heart with travel.

Healing A Broken Heart With Travel

So how do you mend a broken heart with travel? Well firstly, you need to get out of the routine you currently are in. It will be hard as you are probably use to meeting your partner to go out and now you find yourself alone. This is where solo travel can really turn your life around. Imagine escaping to a new destination to help distract you from ‘missing’ that loved one or thing you have lost. The benefits I have found I highlight following.

Benefits of Travel to Mend a Broken Heart

Travel can be daunting, particularly if you decide to travel solo, but even more so when your heart is broken. At the same time it can be rewarding and help you recover. Each of the following benefits can help to heal your broken heart.

Rediscover Yourself

Travelling forces us into new situations, some of these maybe awkward and you will need to draw on your inner self to cope with these situations. Travel can help you get to know yourself again and show you, you can do things without needing that other person or thing in your life.

Travel will Help You Make New Memories

Forget the ‘remember the time we did this’ and start creating new and exciting stories.

Meet New People and ‘Forgot’ About the Old

Travelling will help mend your broken heart by allowing you to meet new people. I’ve always found when I’ve travelled alone I make more of an effort to meet new people. This is because I am not giving my full attention to my travel partner. Even if it is just a quick conversation while sharing the same seat on a bus or train, that interaction will help you feel better. If you don’t want to travel on your own, why not join a group tour. Meeting other people, who may or may not be heart broken themselves will help distract you from how you are feeling and hopefully bring you ‘back to life’ and seeing things ‘through rose coloured glasses’ again.

Face Your Fears

Doing some travel with a broken heart will help you face your fears. Travel can make you stronger so when you go back to your ’normal life’ you will be stronger to deal with what you are faced with.

Places Not to Travel to with a Broken Heart

If you are travelling with a broken heart I highly suggest you avoid ‘honeymoon destinations’. There is nothing worse watching couples enjoying their love for each other when you have just had your heart broken. I would definitely avoid Paris and some beach resorts with romantic night lighting for dining!

Places to Travel with a Broken Heart

I would suggest you take your newly single self to a big city and get lost in the crowds. Go see the sights. Take a walking tour. Eat in places where eating on your own isn’t an issue. Or perhaps go off grid, camping and hiking and getting back to nature where you can prioritise your mental and physical health and mend that broken heart. Maybe a yoga retreat to pamper yourself is more up your ally. Or perhaps move abroad and work and travel in another country on a working holiday visa or as a digital nomad. Throwing yourself into working in another may help in mending your heart. Wherever you choose, taking the first step to mending your broken heart is a must. If you don’t, you could get lost in the darkness which is not what you want. You will need accommodation during your ‘healing trip’ so check out Booking.com to get a good deal.

Are You Ready to Begin Healing Your Broken Heart with Travel? I hope so!

I know it is easy to get a bottle of wine and drink yourself into oblivion after a breakup or loss, however, I do hope you consider travel to help mend your broken heart. Travel is more than just travel of discovering new places and cultures, it can be therapeutic too. I cannot guarantee travel will mend a broken heart, but it definitely can begin the healing process.

Travel can be life-changing but also stressful – both mentally and physically. This is where yoga comes in! If you already practice yoga, like I do, you will know that yoga offers great physical and psychological benefits to your every day life. And just because you are travelling, doesn’t mean you can’t continue with the benefits of yoga and travel during your travelling life. In fact, there are great benefits of practicing yoga while travelling. In this post I will discuss these benefits plus advise what yoga gear you need to travel with including my 5 best travel yoga mat suggestions. If you want to travel better and travel longer, consider practicing yoga while travelling.

What is Yoga?

Yoga is a form of static stretching which involves many sutras (positions) to achieve physical strength, mental peace and spiritual awareness. This form of exercise was created some 5000 years ago in India and I wish I could personally thank them for doing so. In yoga, the body, breath and mind are seen as one. I feel more relaxed already! How about you?

What Benefits Does Yoga Offer Travellers?

Yoga offers many benefits to everyone who practices it and I find it particularly beneficial to continue practicing it as I travel, and so can you as benefits include:

1. Improves Strength, Balance and Flexibility while Travelling

Yoga involves static stretching of muscles and joints of the arms, legs, and muscles of the back. With this stretching comes flexibility and strength of muscles. With this flexibility and strength comes alleviation of tension and stain for joints and muscles enabling you to travel longer and better.

2. Helps you be more aware and focused

Yoga is not only exercise for the body but exercise for the brain to stay focussed and calm. During travel, you can be exposed to many new things at once, but with yoga in you life, you can sit and observe the nature around you.

3. Provides neck and back pain relief

Sitting for long hours as can happen when travelling in cars, buses, trains and planes can increase the tenderness and muscle soreness in the back muscles and neck. Stretching these muscles through yoga can remove the post-travel symptoms of stiff neck and back pain. Yoga stretches done in your seat can while travelling can help to alleviate this.

4. Helps maintain Balance

During travel, many people feel imbalance and symptoms of motion sickness. Yoga can help alleviate the symptoms of imbalance and increase body awareness, thus helping you travel better.

5. Relieve and reduce Fatigue

During long flights and long trips in cars, buses and trains you can experience fatigue. Yoga is great to minimise this fatigue by increasing blood circulation to different parts of the body. Which leads me into my next benefit of doing yoga while travelling.

6. Enhances the duration of deep Sleep

Yep, yoga helps release the negative energy from you body which helps calmness and increases the duration of quality sleep. So do some yoga after a hectic and long day of travelling to help you sleep better. And lastly,

7. Yoga improves Mental Health

Yoga increases blood circulation, thus more blood flow to the brain helps improve the brain’s functioning. Morning yoga can be beneficial in keeping the mind calm and relaxed for the whole day. Ten to twenty minutes of daily yoga can improve you mental health just like spending time in the great outdoors can help you to de-stress. It can sharpen your memory and alleviate any mild headache.

So Why do Yoga while Travelling?

Simple really. After a long day sightseeing, carrying a backpack on your back, sitting in transport, hiking up mountains or any other pursuit you like doing, you may be ‘spent’ by the end of the day. You may be stiff, have aches and pains and a racing mind. Yoga will help relieve all these symptoms can help you sleep better at night. Having less or no pain and feeling relaxed and sleeping better will help you travel better and travel longer.

How to do Yoga while Travelling?

It’s easy to do yoga while travelling. In my opinion yoga and travel or travel and yoga go together. Firstly, designate some time to do it. It only takes 5-10 minutes if the purpose of your yoga is for relaxation and mindfulness. Secondly, find a place you can roll your yoga mat out and start your yoga routine. This could be in a park, at the beach, on top of a mountain or by your bunk bed. Anywhere really. Don’t feel self-conscious of other people as your health is your main priority. The better your health – the better you travel. If you do feel reluctant to practice yoga in public spaces practice pranayama. You may even consider going to a yoga retreat.

Types of Yoga to Practice

There are different types of yoga to practice. Each type has different benefits and can work for you at different times. You just need to work out what is best for you. I personally like the breath control and yoga postures. The main ones are:

Yama (abstinences)

Niyama (observances)

Asana (yoga postures)

Pranayama (breath control)

Pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses)

Dharana (concentration)

Dhyana (meditation)

Samadhi (absorption)

As I mentioned, I like the breath control of Pranayama. It is a great exercise to boost my metabolism, improve my breathing and increase my lung capacity. This has helped me when I am running up that mountain. Yes running, instead of panting! As I like being fit to enjoy hiking while travelling practicing pranayama has been great for my health while travelling.

Where to Do Yoga on Vacation

As mentioned, yoga can be done anywhere – just roll out your yoga mat and away you go. Have you thought of turning your vacation into a yoga vacation. There are yoga retreats in many countries around the world. Check out the platform Tripaneer for yoga retreats.

What Should Be in Your Bag to do Yoga While Travelling?

You should have the following essential yoga equipment items in your bag, most are optional but a yoga mat is a must. Yoga mats are important as they define your space, plus other things – keep reading to discover.

● Yoga mat
● Yoga clothes (optional)
● Stretch bands( if needed)
● Water bottle
● Shoes (optional)

Why do you need a Yoga Mat to do Yoga while Travelling?

A yoga mat is more than just a mat to help you stabilise on and provide comfort from bumpy surfaces underneath. A yoga mat defines your space and represents the space in which your body and mind might experience heightenment from the nature of daily living (and travelling). This is why it is good for the mind and the body to do yoga while travelling on your yoga travel mat. It can keep you mentally grounded and physically well so you can travel better and longer. And a travel yoga mat is a little different to a regular yoga mat because a travel yoga mat weighs less and is packable. They are tailored for travellers and people on the move to do yoga anywhere and everywhere.

Can you take your current Yoga Mat travelling?

I don’t see why not. As long as it is lightweight and rolls or folds up tightly, then by all means take your current one. But if it isn’t lightweight and easy to pack then it can become cumbersome.

What to look for in a Travel Yoga Mat?

The main things to look for when choosing a travel yoga mat for travelling is to ensure the mat is:

Lightweight – you don’t want to be lugging around extra weight so the lightest mat possible.

Portability – you want your yoga mat to not take up too much space in your luggage and be easily stored when not in use.

Thickness – don’t compromise thickness for comfort. Yes, a thinner mat will be lighter but it can also be uncomfortable and you might as well be doing your yoga on a rocky driveway!

Stickability – ever fallen on your face cause you slipped in your own sweat? Yeah, it can happen so stickability or the texture of your mat should be a consideration.

Durability – some mats aren’t meant to go outside, if you plan to practice yoga on the beach, on top of a mountain or even your hostel’s floor, then the more durable the better.

Eco-friendliness – not a necessity, but you may want an earth-friendly mat that is typically made from recycled rubber.

Style – your yoga mat can become your best friend so choose it wisely.

The 5 best Travel Yoga Mats for Practicing Yoga While Travelling

There are plenty of yoga mats out there in the marketplace. Here are 5 that are great to take travelling so you can practice yoga anywhere, anytime.

How to Clean Your Yoga Mat While Travelling

Did you know you should clean your yoga mat on a regular basis? Why you ask? Well, they can get dirty from the surfaces they are rolled out on and from your body sweat. These can make your mat slippery and you don’t want to slip during your yoga practice. You want your yoga session to help you travel better and longer, not hinder it. So these are the steps I adopt to clean my mat so I can continue getting the benefits of practicing yoga while travelling.

In a spray bottle, I mix 1/2 cup of vinegar with 1/2 cup of water – sometimes I add 10 drops of tea tree oil if I have it. (Or you can buy a specific yoga mat cleaner)

Spritz your mat with the solution

Wipe your mat with a cloth and let it air dry

Roll it up and continue travelling

For many of us, Amazon has become an essential shopping platform. And I’ll admit freely, that I spend a lot of time looking at (and buying) travel products that will help me travel better and longer. I’ll also admit that I’m guilty of stocking up on toiletries and travel-sized beauty products to take on every trip. Why? Because there are so many great travel products on Amazon and it is so easy to purchase them online rather than running around from shop to shop trying to find similar. The products listed in this blog post are the beauty basics I’ve come across on Amazon. They are my favourite travel-friendly toiletries on Amazon I regularly buy to help me keep my beauty routine while I travel.

Why Buy Travel-Friendly Products?

Why not buy travel-friendly products! I buy them because they offer me some advantages. These benefits include:

being smaller, they save space in my luggage so I can pack other things, like clothes.

the products last a long time, well long enough to cover my whole trip (sometimes).

some products are in re-usable bottles or packaging so I can re-fill them.

Please Note: As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Read full disclosure here.

My Favourite Travel-friendly Toiletries on Amazon

My favourites include:

Shampoo Bar

For years I have travelled with a combined shampoo and conditioner and then I discovered a shampoo bar. This shampoo bar not only saves space in my luggage but I am saving the planet by not using single use plastic bottles. The Wombar brand of shampoo bars have naturally derived ingredients from nourishing cocoa butter and betaine (from sugar beets) and this one has a beautiful eucalyptus and lavender smell. There are different scents in the range. And don’t forget a container to carry your shampoo bar in.

Facial Wipes

These facial wipes are great to remove makeup and to cleanse your face after a long day sightseeing, travelling or hiking. They dissolve traces of dirt and impurities on your skin making you feel fresher. They are easily disposed of and great to use in your daily routine while travelling. These wipes are one of my favourite travel-friendly toiletries I use as I travel. I also use them for a quick wash, well I use them to wipe other areas of my body, like underarms, to keep me fresh until I can get to a shower.

Tea Tree Oil Foot Cream

After a long day on my feet I often give my feet a massage with my Tea Tree Oil Foot Cream. It helps relieve aches and pains from being on my feet all day and it helps keep my heels from cracking. Plus the tea tree oil keeps itches from athletes foot fungus at bay. It is quite easy to add to my daily beauty routine. Just before getting in to bed and while sitting on the side of my bed I give my feet a good rub. Afterall, they deserve it and keep me going day after day.

Eye Gel

Kiss puffy eyes and dark circles under the eyes goodbye with under eye gel patches. They work to eliminate puffiness, dark circles and fine lines by speeding up cell and collagen rejuvenation. Keep them on for 20 minutes at least once a week or every couple of days if you need it. If I’ve had a big night I like to get rid of my ‘panda eyes’ by using these eye gel patches.

Chapstick for your Lips

For as long as I remember I have always had a chapstick in my purse. The flavour changes from vanilla to strawberry and back to vanilla. Flavour aside, this little stick full of moisturiser keeps my lips soft and protected. Even if I have licked them constantly, my chaptstick undoes the damage. I am never found without one of these and I probably should have put it as number one on this list of my favourite travel-friendly toiletries on Amazon.

SPF 50 Moisturiser

Heading out every day whether it be summer or winter I always wear SPF 50 Moisturiser. Having SPF in my moisturiser ensures my skin doesn’t get burnt from the sun whether I am hiking, snowboarding (yes, I like to snowboard), sitting on the beach or just walking around. Having sun protection in my moisturiser means I don’t need to worry about putting moisturiser on and then sunscreen, as it is all in the one product. This will definitely always be on my favourite travel-friendly toiletries list.

Travel Dental Care Kit

There is nothing worse than getting a tooth-ache while travelling which is why I like to clean my teeth morning and night. That’s why I travel with a dental care kit that includes my toothbrush, toothpaste and mouth rinse.

Travel Brush and Comb

Part of my beauty routine is to brush my hair so I look good in selfies! Plus to keep it healthy and knot free. I travel with a combined brush and comb to save space and to fulfill looking after my hair on the road.

You probably haven’t thought about doing laundry while travelling, I know I don’t think about it until I actually have to do it! But you should give it some consideration during the planning of your trip. If you are just travelling for a week you can get away with not washing during your trip. A holiday any longer than a week, you should consider your options to get your clothes washed. While doing laundry while travelling may sound annoying, frustrating and so NOT exciting, it doesn’t have to be. From my years of travelling I have uncovered some tricks and tips that I’m going to share here to help doing laundry while travelling less of a chore.

Why do Laundry While Travelling?

I think this question has a pretty obvious answer. if your clothes get dirty or smelly you will want to freshen them up, right? But you may also be thinking “Why would I want to do laundry while on holiday?’. Well, it will depend on how long you are travelling for and how many clothes you have with you. If you are holidaying for only a week, as I mentioned before, you could get away with not washing. It is when your holiday becomes longer than a week that you will need to freshen them up. No-one wants to sit next to a smelly person on that long bus or train trip, right? So here are some options to wash your clothes while travelling.

Have a Dedicated Laundry Bag for Dirty Clothing

This goes without saying, keep your dirty clothes separately from clean clothes. This way, when it is time to do laundry you can find your dirty clothes quickly. I suggest having a specific bag or a packing cube to keep your dirty washing in. This set of packing cubes has a laundry bag included in its set.

I have seen many a traveller wash their dirty laundry in the sink at their accommodation. Particularly when they are on a jam packed travel schedule like on a tour. It is a good option if you don’t have much to wash or have the time to wash and want to ensure your smaller items such as underwear, socks and the like are clean. Washing these clothes in the sink, leaving them out to dry overnight and hoping they will be dry in the morning is a good way to save money on doing laundry when travelling. To wash my clothes in the sink in my accommodation I ensure I travel with the following things:

Sink Hole Plug + Laundry Soap + Clothes Line = Clean and Dry Clothes

Take Advantage of hostel/hotel Laundry Services

If your hostel or hotel has a laundry service, don’t hesitate to use it. Although it can be a little on the expensive side, it can be worth it. By using the service, that usually includes washing, drying, hanging, ironing or folding your clothes you can do something else while your laundry is being done. Generally, the laundry will take about 24 hours to be done so ensure you allow this time in your travel plans so you get your clean clothes back before you check out.

Find a Laundromat

Simple, find a laundromat in the city you are in and get your clothes washed and dry. Not always as simple as it sounds. First, you need to find a laundromat and that can be hard in a new city where you don’t speak the language. Check out Google Maps to find the nearest laundromat in your area. Typically, public laundromats offer self-service however, sometimes there is staff and you can pay to have them do your laundry for you. The do-it-yourself model of laundromat is cheaper but you will need coins to operate the machines and detergent, like the eco strips mentioned above. You will also need coins for the dryer. The biggest delay by doing washing your clothes in the laundromat is the time. But what is an hour or two out of your day!

Book Accommodation with a Washing Machine

For a long term stay, an Airbnb or apartment can be a great option to help you do your laundry as it should have a washing machine. Check the listing of services of the property before you book. With access to a washing machine you will be able to wash whenever you want. And having access to the amenities will ensure you will still have a wonderful holiday, doing laundry or not! This is often my preferred option as I work and travel and live out of my luggage for weeks on end. Check out Booking.com for accommodation with a washing machine so you can do your washing while travelling.

Pack Clothes that require less Washing and Drying

People often say pack cotton clothes because the material breathes better, however, it is not fast drying. You may want to pack clothes made from fabrics that dry quickly and don’t need to be washed often. Or pack clothes that you don’t wash after every wear or two like denim jeans or woollen jumper.

Carry and Use a Travel Laundry Wash Bag

Travel wash bags are an all-in-one solution to doing your laundry while travelling. They are ideal for small items, like a load of underwear that you can throw in the wash bag, and wash the clothes in the comfort of your hostel or hotel room. The Scrubba Portable Wash Bag is one of my personal favourites. It is a simply DIY solution and doesn’t take up much room in my luggage either.

A stain remover and a portable mini washing machine. keep your dirty clothes separate to your clean clothes in a laundry bag. Hand washing in the sink is popular so carry a plug, detergent and something to hang your clothes.
Make Your own Meals

Cooking your own meals is one way to stay fit and healthy while travelling

One of the best and easiest ways to stay fit and healthy while travelling is to ensure you are eating healthy meals while travelling. Enjoying local foods while travelling is one of my favourite past times. I mean, who doesn’t love a good taco in Mexico, a creamy pasta in Italy or a full English breakfast in Britain. But unfortunately, all the local foods don’t always like me!

Over indulging in foods of the world can not only be unhealthy, but it can become very expensive. This is why you should be conscious of what you are putting into your body and how much it is costing. When travelling long-term I try to stay in accommodation with cooking facilities. On saying that, some countries, such as in Asia, the street food is so good and cheap you wouldn’t bother cooking. However, if you are taking your health and fitness seriously while travelling, cooking when travelling will allow you to know exactly what you are putting into your body. Plus save you money.

Some of my favourite go-to friendly meals include:

One pot wonders such as risottos and hearty soups.

Stir fry. Buy fresh veggies, throw in your favourite sauce (soy, satay, chilli), some meat, chicken or tofu and serve on top of noodles or rice and you have an easy and healthy meal.

Pasta. So easy to boil a pot of pasta then add a pesto or pasta sauce (pre-made if you prefer). This gives me plenty of carbs to keep up my energy.

Salad. Buy fresh salad items, cut them up and make a healthy salad. Lettuce, tomato, capsicum, onion, olives, avocado or whatever combo you like. Add a piece of meat, chicken or fish and voila – healthy meal.

And sometimes I travel with cooking gear so I can cook my meals, but this depends on how I am travelling. If car camping, I have a gas camping stove to cook with. I also travel with a small solar powerbank that powers my airfryer or my rice maker plus, I have plenty of collapsable gear that helps me make meals that help keep me in shape while I travel. I take travel size appliances with me as they fit in my luggage better.

Stay Hydrated

One of the things while traveling is to not have access to, or forget to drink water. Everyone knows how essential water is to sustaining life. And staying hydrated with water will help you to stay fit and healthy while you travel. It depends on where I am travelling as to whether I will drink the local tap water. If I suspect it may cause me any problems like Bali belly, I will purchase bottled water and I often travel with water purifying tables. To help save on costs, I travel with a re-fillable water bottle and I’ve recently travelled with this collapsable water bottle.

Take Healthy Snacks with You while Travelling

healthy snacks will squash those hunger pains!

Eating healthy while travelling is a must and one way to help keep you in tip top shape is to have healthy snacks for travelling in your bag that you can turn to. Without them, you can eat the first thing you see when you are hungry!

I suggest finding a local grocery store or market and grab some fresh fruits and veggies, nuts, cheese, crackers and other healthy snacks to satisfy those cravings. These things are small and easy to carry in your handbag or backpack for the day, and most importantly, they are healthy. And don’t forget to fill your water bottle up with fresh water for the day rather than buying a bottle of water or a sugary drink. When you have healthy travelling snacks with you, you are less likely to buy unhealthy snacks and drinks. This will help keep your budget fit and healthy too!

Get Plenty of Rest

To stay healthy as you travel, be sure to get enough rest before and after your full day of sightseeing or hiking or whatever it is you are doing. Rest allows the body to heal itself and to get ready for the next day. Now I’m not saying, ditch the party so you can get some sleep but if you have a big day the next day, you may want to leave the party earlier! There is nothing worse than yawning your way through a bucket list adventure or worse, falling asleep during it. So get plenty of rest so you can enjoy all the activities travel brings.

Also, consider upgrading your accommodation sometimes. I remember a friend telling me, he often had snorers in his dorm room in the hostel that would often keep him up at night. So when it got too much, he would book into a hotel and enjoy the comforts it offered. This really helped his mental health and also helped him to stay fit and healthy for travel.

Lay off the alcohol everyday

cheers to a good time – in moderation

When you are travelling and enjoying yourself it is quite easy to add an alcoholic drink or two into the mix. Why wouldn’t you? I mean, if you are having fajitas in a Mexican beach bar why wouldn’t you add a Corona. Or you are having a German sausage and sauerkraut at the Octoberfest, why wouldn’t you add a Heineken or two! When travelling through one of the world’s world-class wine regions, why wouldn’t you partake in a Chardonay or Shiraz or Champaign! Now I am not saying, not to partake, but it is when you overindulge in alcohol that is when things can become an issue.

Too much alcohol not only affects your health, over indulging can interfere with your safety. When you have a lot to drink you can loose awareness of your surroundings and unsavoury types could take advantage of you. Peer pressure is another thing to consider. Yes, it is great to meet new people but when booking accommodation maybe avoid the ‘party hostels’ to reduce your temptation of over-partying. You don’t need alcohol to meet new people! If you don’t want to experience particular sites in a blurry haze the next day from too much alcohol and stay healthy while travelling, ditch the booze.

Bring a First Aid Kit

Travelling isn’t always roses and sunshine, it comes with its downfalls. This is why I travel with a first aid kit. Now you don’t need to have a professional one, unless you want to! From my years of travelling I am aware of what has helped me to combat illness and accidents. Things I take include:

headache/migrane tablets

Band-aids in various sizes

Walk, Walk, Walk

One of the best ways to stay fit and healthy while travelling is by walking. And you will do a lot of walking while travelling. If you are worried about your fitness for travel, consider that travel can make you fit. You will be walking from the train or bus station to your accommodation. Walking around town seeing the sites and walking to go out at night! So keeping up your fitness to travel is essential, and walking is one way to keep in shape.

If you have over-indulged in alcohol or local food you may want to try to walk it off. I have downloaded a step app on my phone and I set myself a limit of 10,000 steps per day to reach. This helps to keep my health and fitness while travelling in check. This is something you should consider also. Ensure you pack some good walking shoes or sandals as when you walk a lot your shoes need to provide support to your feet and be comfortable.

Love the Skin You’re In

Part of staying fit and healthy as you travel is to love the outside of you, so love the skin you’re in. As you travel you will come across all sorts of weather ranging from hot sunny days to cold, wet days. So protect your skin. You can protect your skin with clothes you wear but by also adding the following:

Sunscreen. Reef safe sunscreen is best. I wear a daily moisturiser that has SPF in it so if I forget to put sunscreen on, I still have a little protection.

Hat. Wear a hat to keep the sun off your face.

Sunglasses. Protect your eyes with a good pair of sunglasses.

Pack your favourite workout gear

I often travel with my yoga mat

If you like to workout generally, it can be tough trying to dedicate time to a workout when you are travelling. But it is worth your while to introduce some sort of activity into your travels. As I mentioned before, walking is great so have the appropriate walking gear with you to help you walk better!

I often travel with some favourite workout gear. This includes my yoga mat and my resistance band so I can stretch my muscles after a long day of walking. Another favourite of my workout gear is a scrunchy ball that gives my hand and arm muscles a gentle workout. Have a look at your favourite workout gear and see what might not be too heavy and bulky to carry. Add a quick workout to walking and this will help you stay fit while travelling. Believe me, these little things help you feel so much better and when you feel good, you travel better!

Consider Hygiene

While travelling the world you will come in contact with many surfaces – airplanes, public bathrooms, hostel beds, restaurants – where lots of people have been and will continue to go to. Unfortunately, in these places, you can pick up bugs and germs. After coming in contact with different surfaces ensure to think about your personal hygiene. Some things I do:

wear thongs/flip flops/jandals to a shower block to keep my feet clean

wash my hands regularly and use hand sanitizer

cough and sneeze into my elbow

use disinfectant wipes to wipe down key areas I will touch in my accommodation including light switches, door handles, kitchen surface to name a few. Or while on the plane wipe over the buttons and tray table.

Just applying these little things while I travel help to keep me healthy and fit while I travel.

Keep Active

Lastly, to keep your health and fitness for travel, I suggest you choose activities while you are travelling that will keep you active. In particular, activities that you don’t know are keeping you active. What I mean is, choose activities that you enjoy doing.

If you like hiking, undertake more hikes. If you aren’t a hiker, don’t call it a hike, call it a walk and undertake small walks.

Go on a walking tour of the town you are in.

Swim a few laps in the hotel pool.

Run along the beach, jump in the waves or go for a surf. Or get a frisbee and throw it around chasing after it.

Face Masks have become the ‘must wear’ item during the pandemic affecting the world. As we have learnt from health professionals, face masks play a vital role in reducing the spread of coronavirus. At the same time, they are hard on your skin. They are particularly hard for workers who are required to wear them day in and day out. I am a carer and required to wear one when attending my clients. Face masks are also hard on people who must wear them when going out into the world and while travelling on transport. Continuous wearing of face masks can cause a range of problems including acne, peeling skin, itchiness, rashes and dryness. While face masks are necessary, to help prevent skin problems, I have spoken to a dermatologist friend and she recommends 9 ways to help prevent face mask skin problems.

Skip wearing make-up under your facemark

When wearing a mask your skin under the mask can become very hot. With this heat comes moisture, and if you are wearing make-up the mixture of moisture, make-up can and friction can lead to your pores becoming blocked. This can lead to skin breakouts like acne or ‘maskne’. If you must wear make-up, stick to eye make-up only or have some form of material that you can pat your face with to absorb the excess moisture.

Cleanse your face

If you don’t do it already, start cleansing your face daily with a gentle cleanser. A cleanser is designed to rid your skin of impurities and dirt that can block the pores in your skin. When wearing a mask you may have more impurities and dirt on your skin than usual, so cleaning them away is a must. If possible, do it straight after taking your mask off, so anything that is on your skin doesn’t settle there and cause problems.

Skin issues such as acne, redness, itchiness and rashes can all come from wearing a mask for an extended period of time. If you find yourself with any of these symptoms, treat them individually. There are creams for all sorts of skin issues. Visit your nearest pharmacy or chemist, and obtain the appropriate cream. If that doesn’t resolve the issue, see your doctor.

Staying hydrated is very important for preventing skin problems while wearing a mask. Not only drink water, but spray a hydrating mist onto your skin to help stop dryness.

Choose a face mask with natural fabrics

If you work in some industries a face mask will be a must for you to wear and there will be standards your face mask will need to meet. If you can choose your face mask, choose one with natural fabrics that are breathable. Breathable fabrics, such as cotton, will see the hot air and moisture on your skin reduced. Ensure to wash these masks regularly. You can also wear the single-use face masks but please dispose of them correctly.

Keep your hands clean and away from your face mask. It can be hard not to touch your mask, particularly if it moves on your face and becomes uncomfortable. Try to minimise any touching of the mask, as you can increase the rubbing and the moisture under the mask leading to more skin problems.

Get pampered

It is always nice to pamper yourself. However, it is even nicer when somebody else gives you some pampering. Take the time to be pampered, as it will not only help your skin, but help your state of mind.

Final Words

I cannot guarantee that all these ways to prevent face mask skin problems will be totally effective. However, following these suggestions should help to reduce any skin problems you may encounter. They have definitely helped my skin. If you know of any other suggestions to help your skin while wearing a mask, please mention them in the comments below.
