One of the best things to do in Vancouver on a 2 Day Vancouver itinerary is to enjoy the Vancouver City views surrounded by snow-capped mountains.

Your first two days in Vancouver are exhilarating. You might be tired from travelling a long distance to get here, but you want to see and do everything! How will you fit it all in? While there is always so much to do in Vancouver, here is your beginner’s guide to your first two days in Vancouver. I’ve included the top tourist destinations with some local tips so you can get a good grounding of the city in the limited time you have. Or you might have more if arriving for a Canada Working Holiday as you work abroad and travel the world. Without further ado, here is a 2 day itinerary in Vancouver for First Timers.

About Vancouver

Vancouver in the province of British Columbia is the largest city on the west coast of Canada. It takes its name from George Vancouver, who explored the inner harbour. Vancouver is a bustling seaport surrounded by mountains. You could be having a cup of coffee by the waterside one minute and an hour or so later you could be having another cup of coffee in a resort on a snow capped mountain. It is a very diverse place just waiting for you to discover it.

When is the Best time to visit Vancouver

You can visit Vancouver anytime though the best times for weather is to visit from March to May and from September to November when the weather is mild. However, summers can be hot and the winter time will be very cold but Vancouver in winter can be a great base for skiing in the local mountains. So when to visit will depend on activities you might be doing in the city. And if you have come to Canada on a working holiday you might experience Vancouver in all seasons.

Where to stay in Vancouver?

Whether visiting Vancouver by yourself, with the family or for romance, the best place to stay in Vancouver is downtown. From here, you’ll have immediate access to the top sightseeing of English Bay, Stanley Park, Granville Island, and Gastown. And there are a number of accommodation options available in Vancouver ranging from hostel dorm rooms to 5 star hotels. If you are looking for somewhere to stay check out:

The best way to get around Vancouver is often by foot as many major attractions are located within walking distance of one another. However, you can also ride a bike and use the plus transportation. As you only have 2 days on this trip you might want to purchase a 24 or 48 hour pass for the Hop-On Hop-Off Sightseeing Bus. Taking this bus on your first trip to Vancouver will take you to all the best sites that can help you decide which things you would like to revisit. You can book your 24 or 48 hour pass for the Hop-On Hop-Off Sightseeing Bus here.

Day One

Get a Bird’s Eye View of Vancouver

Start your time in Vancouver by getting an overview of the city. Located in the Harbour Centre building in downtown Vancouver, take a fast glass elevator up to the 55th floor for panoramic views from the Vancouver Lookout. From up above you will get a view of the North Shore and Olympic Peninsula Mountains. To learn more about the city book a tour at the Lookout as well. Pro tip: only go up on the Vancouver Lookout on a clear day so that you can see everything. An adult tick costs CA$17.50.

Stanley Park

Totem Poles in Stanley Park

Once you’ve scoped out Vancouver, you’ll be ready to head to Stanley Park. This 400-hectare park nestled in urban sprawl is a natural West Coast rainforest where you can enjoy the natural beauty of Vancouver: oceanfront, mountain views, and beautiful old trees. For the best experience, rent one of the many bikes at the park and soak in the beauty.

For lunch, stop at the Prospect Point Bar & Grill in Stanley Park. This Canadian pub and eatery is a great place for west coast Canadian vibes with its craft beer brewery, beautiful ocean views, local seafood, and original non-seafood and vegetarian items.

An Afternoon at Granville Island

After that head to the maritime island of Granville. This historic little island has turned its factories into trendy restaurants, galleries, and theatres. The best part, however, is the Granville Island Public Market. This huge open-air market is choke-full of everything that you could imagine and more. From baked goods and ethnic snacks to local crafts and souvenirs, Granville Island Market is as beautiful as it is eclectic. Grab a snack after perusing what the market has to offer and sit by the water. Sometimes while watching boats come into the harbour, you can enjoy the live music of buskers, who often play for the crowd.

Yaletown in the Evening

Next up is Yaletown. Take a photo under the many colourful umbrellas in the Bill Curtis Square, behind the SkyTrain. The umbrellas are always being changing based on the season and are a tribute to how rainy Vancouver can be. They make for a fun and original photo op.

Once you snap some photos, pick one of the many choices for fancy cocktails and classy restaurants in Yaletown. For high-end Canadian cuisine try Brix and Mortar. This restaurant boasts 60 wines by the glass, local food, and a photo-worthy ambience. For a bit cheaper Canadian cuisine try The Flying Pig Yaletown or MeeT, a vegan restaurant in Yaletown.

Nightlife in Gastown

For the nightlife scene, head to Gastown. While there are many bars and pubs to choose from, check out Alexander Gastown, a 3-storey bar that has comedy, live music, and/or DJs depending on the night. There is plenty of seating, away from the action, if you’d prefer a cozy corner to the dance floor. And so ends day 1 of this 2 day Vancouver itinerary.

Day Two

Brunch

After such a busy day, you will probably wake up hungry. Head to Brunch at the Mexican and American breakfast restaurant with the original name of Brunch on Granville Street. Make sure to order a Caesar, Canada’s spin on a Bloody Mary.

The Suspension Bridge

Then hop in the car or bus to check out the oldest tourist attraction in the city, the Capilano Suspension Bridge. Test your fear of heights on the 450-foot-long, 230-foot-high bridge. Be prepared for crowds and expensive prices since this is a hot tourist destination. Pro tip: go in the morning to beat the school field trips. Prices are $42.95 for adults and parking is $5.

Take a Scenic Drive

If you want a more affordable thing to do, take one of the beautiful scenic drives in and near Vancouver. Marine Drive on the North Shore is a lovely route to take. Starting at Lion’s Gate Bridge, cross over it and get onto Marine Drive in North Vancouver. Follow this twisting road through amazing views of the sea, marinas, and Vancouver, as well as passing by the Capilano Suspension bridge. Follow the road until the Bowen Island (about an hour) and then turn back for lunch in North Vancouver. If you need to rent a car check out pricing and availability here.

Lunch in North Van

Head to Lonsdale Quarry, snap a few pictures and pick from one of the many restaurant choices. Pier 7 Restaurant and Bar boasts waterfront dining. Or try some delicious Greek food at Anatoli Souvlaki.

An Afternoon at the Museum

With stomachs full again, head to one of Vancouver’s many museums. The museum of Anthropology, located on the University of British Columbia’s campus has one of the most extensive collections of art and artifacts from the Northwest Coast First Nations. From ornate canoes, ritual masks, and highly decorate totem poles, you will be immersed in Vancouver’s earliest history. There are also 14th-century artifacts to feast your eyes upon, ensuring that there is something of interest for everyone. Wander the halls yourself or join one of the three tours a day to get the inside scoop.

Take a Hike

If museums aren’t your cup of tea, go on a hike or take the Blue Skyride to the top of Grouse Mountain, a ski resort with stunning views of the city and natural scenery. Or shop and grab a snack in Vancouver’s vibrant Chinatown.

Sunset at Kit’s

When you’re done hiking or enjoying the museum, soak in the city’s natural beauty at Kitsilano Beach, Vancouver’s favourite beach. Watch the sunset from this lovely viewpoint, either on the sand or at the Boathouse Restaurant overlooking the water.

For a cheaper dinner, grab a snack or even take-out lunch at the middle eastern restaurant Best Falafel Kitsilano. Then head to the beach to watch the sunset. After watching the sun disappear into the ocean, go to Grapes & Soda for a night cap to wrap up a jam-packed two days of sightseeing in Vancouver.

Final Words

There you have it: two full days in Canada’s biggest West Coast city. I hope you have had a great time exploring Vancouver over the 2 day itinerary. Is there anything you would add to this list? Let us know in the comments below.

So, you’re thinking about going to Canada “eh”? It’s a beautiful country with so much to offer but where do you start? Canada is the second largest country in the world, so it can be challenging to fit everything in for a one month long trip. I’ve simplified the planning process for you, detailing transportation, accommodation, activities and everything in between so you don’t need to. This 1 month Canada Itinerary is perfect for first timers and you’ll see the best the country has to offer. We start on the west coast and make our way over to the east, but you could always do this itinerary in reverse if that works best for you. There are a number of Canada itinerary options you could do, but this one I have put together will take you to the best cities and highlights to see.

Now let’s get into the good stuff!

The Best Time To Visit Canada

Canada’s climate varies tremendously and should be considered when planning your 1 month Canada itinerary. There are warm and sunny days in summer, July to August, and then there can be sub zero temperatures in winter, December to February. I guess, it depends on what you want out of Canada. Do you want to visit the ski fields and maybe work a season, or two? Are you wanting to see the Northern Lights, best viewed from November to March. Maybe you love sport and want to experience an Ice Hockey game during the season running from October to June. Or would you like to see Grizzly and Black bears in their natural habitats during May to October. It just depends on what you want to see, but really, any time is a good time to visit Canada.

Best Canadian Transport Options

As you can imagine, due to the sheer size of Canada, knowing how you’re going to get from place to place during your Canadian holiday is a must. There are a variety of options that work for different budgets, so there’s something for everyone!

Travel Canada by Car or Campervan

If you’re looking for the freedom to travel at your own pace, hiring a car or campervan might be your best bet. There are many places in the mountainous areas of Canada where there isn’t access to public transit, making this option one of the most popular among tourists. There are a variety of car rental companies to choose from. Each with comparable prices, allowing you to pick which one works for you. Campervans also take accommodation out of the picture, combining your stay and transportation. You can find affordable campervan rentals in Canada with Wicked Campers.

Travel Canada by Train

Travelling by train might be one of the best ways to see Canada. After all, you can kick back and relax, while taking in the beautiful views throughout the entire journey! There are many options when it comes to train travel but the most popular is Via Rail which is the government run train system. Then there is the Rocky Mountaineer, a world-renowned and privately-owned train system. You can find trips from coast to coast, as well as shorter distances. Keep in mind that since the train provides a once in a lifetime view and experience, it comes at a higher price point than other modes of transportation!

Travel Canada by Bus

It is doable to travel through Canada on a bus but will take a little more planning, coordinating and a resilient attitude! Local transit throughout major cities and towns have great bus routes and for longer journeys, you can hop aboard a Greyhound bus. The bus will take longer than most other modes of transportation, so it’s best for those who aren’t on a strict timeline!

Travel Canada by Plane

Of course, air travel is often the most convenient option to get from place to place within Canada because it’s such a large country. With that being said, flights are often shockingly priced for the distance. There are many airlines that fly within Canada, the most popular and reputable being Air Canada and WestJet. A few budget airlines have recently popped up, such as Flair Airlines and Swoop (an offshoot of WestJet), making air travel in Canada more affordable!

How Much Spending Money Do I Need for A Trip to Canada?

How long is a piece string? It is hard to put an exact amount to how much spending money you will need to travel around Canada. I suggest you pay for as much as possible beforehand. Your flights, rental car and accommodation. Then you only need to worry about spending money for food, petrol and splurges going out and on souvenirs. One way to reduce your food cost is to look for accommodation that offers breakfast. And take your money in a variety of ways – cash, credit and debit card. So if you have under-budgetted your spending in Canada, you have access to money.

1 Month Canada Itinerary

While a month may not feel like enough time to see all of Canada, you’ll be able to cover quite a lot of ground! This 1 month Canada Itinerary will get you started and help you plan an amazing adventure. Though there are many options to travel Canada, as mentioned above, I feel driving is the best option. So consider this itinerary as a one month road trip of Canada.

Days 1-3 Vancouver, BC

Beautiful Vancouver City with mountains behind

This Canadian itinerary starts or ends in Vancouver. Vancouver is one of the largest cities in Canada, with lots of action going on year round! With a relatively warm climate (for Canada), there are many outdoor activities to partake in. Maybe get your bearings from the Vancouver Lookout, where you will receive 360 degree views of the city. A visit to the iconic Stanley Park to wander amongst the totem poles is a must. Afterwards heading by Canada Place where you can take in the beautiful Vancouver waterfront and take a photo with the 2010 Olympic cauldron!

On a rainy day, spend your time wandering through the Vancouver Art Gallery. Or head about 20 minutes out of the city to walk along the Capilano Suspension Bridge! The rain and fog will only add to the stunning scenery. There are also many unique neighbourhoods such as Gastown, Chinatown and Yaletown that are worth checking out during your stay. Each offer different shopping and dining options, so you can’t go wrong.

Maybe take a ferry across to Vancouver Island where you will find the capital of British Columbia, Victoria. Victoria boasts stunning natural beauty and has a rich heritage. Visit the Parliament Buildings and the Royal BC Museum or take a ride in a horse pulled carriage down the cobblestone streets.

One of the best ways to to discover Vancouver is to go on the Vancouver Hop On Hop Off. Yes, it can be touristy. At the same time, it takes you to all the best parts of Vancouver. It also tells you why you should visit the place, and allows you to get on and off so you can spend more time in different places.

Days 4-8 The Rocky Mountains

 <img width="640" height="458" src="https://liveworkplaytravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/CanadaLakeMoraine-e1609578316324.jpg" alt="Lake Moraine.

Lake Moraine

Next up on our one month Canada itinerary are the Rockies! The Rocky Mountains span over different parts of British Columbia and Alberta and there are many breathtaking spots to hike, ski, snowboard, mountain bike and more, along the way. You’ll first want to head towards Whistler which is just a two hour drive north of Vancouver. Whistler is one of Canada’s favourite year-round destinations. Imagine sparkling lakes, charming villages nestled between snow-capped mountains. No wonder so many people fall in love with this area and stay to work and ski in Canada. Then make your way across British Columbia until you reach Alberta. As you leave Whistler, take the Sea to Sky Highway for a magnificent drive!

Once you reach the Canadian Rockies in Alberta, you must spend some time in Jasper and Banff! Jasper National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with dazzling glaciers, crystal-clear lakes, thundering waterfalls and mountains. Here you could undertake the Maligne Canyon Ice Walk, try cross-country skiing, snowshoeing or ice skating. And come out at night as Jasper National Park is a dark sky preserve, meaning it is an area where almost no artificial light is visible at night.

Banff is nestled high in the Canadian Rockies with a long list of things to do. Hike the 4.3 kilometre trail up Tunnel Mountain to get a great perspective of the town and valley. Or enjoy a meal by a warming fireplace in one of the lively streets which are lined with top-class restaurants and bars. And the shopping is pretty good too.

Your trip won’t be complete until you’ve made it to Lake Louise to see its emerald green water and rugged peaks and glaciers. Fantastic winter activities to be done here or canoeing in bright blue water during the summer months. Don’t be surprised if you see bears or other wildlife while hiking or venturing through the mountainous landscape! Always be prepared with bear spray or a whistle just in case.

Time in the Rocky Mountains: 5 days
Distance from Vancouver: The drive directly from Vancouver to Banff is about 9 hours, so you’ll probably want to break the drive up and stop at a few places along the way!
Where to stay in Whistler: For a hostel try Whistler Lodge Hostel or in one of the many ski lodges like the Pan Pacific Whistler Village Centre.
Accommodation in Banff: For a hostel try Banff International Hostel.
When you decide it’s time to say goodbye to the Rocky Mountains, you’ll want to make your way even further east. Saskatoon is a fairly long drive from Banff so you should consider stopping in Calgary to see what the city has to offer. If you go during the right time of year you may even catch the Calgary Stampede, which is a rodeo or really a 10 day event that takes place annually, every July. If there any other time of year there is plenty to do. Visit the Calgary Zoo or check out the views from Calgary Tower.

Accommodation in Calgary: For a hostel try Wicked Hostels.
Afterwards, continue on your journey until you make it to Saskatoon. This underrated city is the largest city in the province of Saskatchewan is known as the Paris of the Prairies, because of it’s excellent cuisine. It’s an amazing spot for foodies who can check out the local farmer’s markets and restaurants. It’s also home to a large Jazz scene, so it may be worthwhile to plan your trip around the Saskatchewan Jazz Festival!

Distance from the Rockies: Saskatoon is about an 8 hour drive from Banff.
Time in Saskatoon: 2 days
Where to stay in Saskatoon: Book yourself an Airbnb for a night or stay at Park Town Hotel.

Days 12-13 Winnipeg

You’ll want to have a few days in Thunder Bay on this 1 month Canada itinerary to explore all of the natural wonders such as the Ouimet Canyon, the Kakabeka Falls and the most noteworthy landmark – the Sleeping Giant.

Distance from Winnipeg: Just another quick 8 hour drive until you reach Thunder Bay.
Time in Thunder Bay: 3 days
Where to stay in Thunder Bay: Book a cabin in Thunder Bay and fully immerse yourself in life up North or stay at the Courthouse Hotel if you want something more lavish!

Toronto City

As you say farewell to Thunder Bay, you’ll head south towards Toronto – Canada’s largest city and one of the most multicultural cities in the world! Since the drive is quite long, you’ll want to make a few stops along the way and allow for a few extra days for travel. There are many National Parks on the way where you can stop for hiking and a dip in the lakes (if weather permits!). You can’t miss Algonquin Park, especially during the fall season when all of the leaves are changing colour!

Once you finally reach Toronto, there are heaps of things to see and do. Take a trip to the CN Tower in the heart of downtown which was at one point, the tallest freestanding building in the world. Maybe brave the Edge Walk! Watch the Raptors go for another NBA Championship win at the Scotiabank Arena, or enjoy a Blue Jays game at the Rogers Centre. And Canadians love their ice hockey so check out the memorabilia at the Hockey Hall of Fame. Go for a stroll along the waterfront, spend an entire day visiting the Toronto Islands and explore the many diverse neighbourhoods throughout the city! The nightlife can be found mostly along King Street West but you’ll be able to find a good bar just about anywhere throughout the city.

Distance from Thunder Bay: 14-15 hour drive
Time in Toronto: 4 days
Where to stay in Toronto: While Toronto receives many visitors each year, it’s not much of a backpacking city. More often than not, people stay in Airbnb’s or boutique hotels like the Drake Hotel.

The iconic falls are on the border of the United States and are a sight to be seen! Niagara is best viewed aboard a boat cruise or scenic flight.

If you’re visiting during the winter, you can’t miss the Carnaval, where you can see ice sculptures and experience the best of winter in Quebec! You can also go dog sledding, tap a maple tree and taste fresh Canadian maple syrup.

Final Words on this 1 Month Canada Itinerary

Canada is known for having some of the best ski and snowboard resorts in the world. Places such as Banff, Jasper, Calgary and Whistler are universally known. So if you would like to spend time in Canada working in a ski resort you are in luck. Every year literally thousands of working holiday makers head to the Canadian ski resorts looking for work. Some line work up beforehand, while others find it when they arrive. And the good news is the resorts, from budget to luxury, need staff doing many jobs to cater for their guest’s whims. If you are interested to find work at a Canadian Ski Resort, read on.

Do You Qualify to Legally Work and Ski Canada?

To work in Canada you will need the appropriate visa. Lucky Canada has a working holiday visa available. The International Experience Canada (IEC) program enables young citizens (usually aged 18 to 30 years, but sometimes 18 to 35 years) from around 30 countries to travel and work in Canada. If successful in obtaining a working holiday permit you can stay up to 12 or 24 months, depending on each country’s reciprocal agreement with Canada. You can also work anywhere in Canada. And many choose to do a season in a Canadian ski resort.

Types Of Positions In A Canadian Ski Resort

Most positions available at ski resorts are in the following categories:

Qualifications, If Any, Required To Get A Job

If you are seeking a bar job then a qualification may not be required however, any experience would come in very handy. If you want to be a ski or snowboard instructor you will definitely need to be qualified. So before you start applying for jobs, consider what qualification/s and experience you have because some of the luxury resorts may not even consider you without extensive experience or a formal qualification.

The Job Search – How to Get a Job in a Canadian Ski Resort

There are a number of ways to find work in a Canadian ski resort. Firstly, you should have an idea of where the ski resorts are. Canada is a large country and the ski resorts are widespread. You should have an idea of where you would like to work and also a job may be influenced by where you arrive in Canada. For instance, most Australians and New Zealanders arrive on their working holiday in Canada in Vancouver on the West Coast. They then find work in a ski resort in the provinces of Alberta and British Columbia. British and Irish citizens often find work in the East Coast ski resorts, because they usually arrive in Toronto. Once you know where, you need to know how to get a job in a Canadian ski resort.

Ways to Find a Job in a Canadian Ski Resort

Travel Brochures

A great option to find work at a Canadian ski resort is to visit your nearest travel agent and pick up as many Canada ski travel brochures as possible. Travel brochures are an invaluable source of information. They provide maps showing where the ski resorts are. Very useful! They also mention the average snowfall, the season dates, the number of runs and ski lifts (chairs, surface and gondolas) and whether snow-making facilities are used. As well as the amenities in the resort including restaurants, nightclubs, cafes and ski rental stores. Other information includes details of special events, when extra staff may be required and contact details of ski and snowboard schools. There are extensive accommodation listings detailing the type of accommodation, number of rooms and amenities offered and most importantly, the accommodation contact details. Use the information in ski travel brochures to your advantage by knowing what is available, then approaching resorts highlighting your skills.

Apply in Person

Another option for finding work includes applying in person by door knocking. You can use the information you secured from tourist brochures to target areas. The bigger the hotel the greater the number of staff they recruit and the more organised they usually are. Large resorts usually have their staff in place for the start of the season. Positions can and do become available anytime during the season. This is because people often leave, usually in the second or third week because life in the resorts isn’t what they expected. The period after Christmas is something of an ‘unofficial’ second hiring season as many dropout after the holidays are over. Also, many of the resorts are four season resorts. This means they are open all year round. So during the warmer months after the snow has melted they offer outdoor activities like kayaking, hiking, fishing, rafting and the extremely popular mountain bike riding. And staff are required during this time.

Apply Online

Apply online for a position in a Canadian ski resort. All the resorts have their own website and if you look at their content, you will most likely see a ‘Careers’ section on the site. Read the information they provide and follow the instructions to apply for a job. Most of the resorts start advertising positions online in July and August. So keep an eye out. Some of the resorts are happy to conduct a Skype interview for those people not in Canada or not near the resort in Canada.

Job Fairs

Most Canadian ski resorts hold job fairs in October and November to attract staff. You will need to be in Canada as they are held at the resort. These are a great opportunity to meet the hiring managers and you may get a job offer on the spot.

Being able to ski or snowboard on your time off is a bonus to working in a Canadian ski resort

Tips to finding a Snow Job in Canada

Be presentable, polite and well spoken. Resist the idea of arriving at a resort mid-season, with your backpack on, looking like hell after a long flight and banging on hotel doors demanding a job. This approach won’t work. Hotels are very organised and usually have their staff organised before the season starts.

If organising a position before you arrive either ring or Email the hotel (website and Email addresses follow).

Phone hotels if you have arrived in the area and speak to the human resources department.

Introduce yourself and provide a brief outline of your experience and qualifications before asking when the organisation is recruiting and how they recruit. Then, offer to send your CV via email or fax or alternatively obtain the application form.

Explain you are able to attend an interview.

When To Look For A Ski Job

The main Canadian ski season is from November/December to March/April but this depends on the white stuff. Sometimes the season starts earlier and finishes later. If you don’t have a position arranged for your arrival then it is advisable to arrive in September as many of the resorts run recruitment days to secure staff. However, as some resorts are open year round they are recruiting regularly. Don’t forget to look online as mentioned above.

accommodation – you may be sharing with other employees in the staff housing and also be charged a weekly rent. It can be isolating and only reached via a gondola. Some prefer to find accommodation off-mountain.
Canadian Ski Resorts

There are a number of ski areas in Canada – well there are many mountains! The most popular resorts where travellers find work are in the provinces of Alberta, British Columbia and Quebec. However, work can also be found in other provinces. Following is a listing of resorts in the three most popular provinces along with their websites and contact details. Some websites allow you to apply for positions on-line.

Alberta

Alberta is home of the Canadian Rockies where you will find some major ski resorts offering the traveller a variety of positions plus fabulous skiing and snowboarding.

Banff National Park is the oldest national park in Canada and one of the most popular. It is some 6,641 square kilometres and offers ski and snowboard enthusiasts a wonderful time. Within the national park most travellers find work at the major ski resorts of Lake Louise, Mount Norquay and Sunshine Village. Banff town is about an hour and a half away from Calgary by car. It has many hotels including family-run mountain lodges, budget motels and large luxury hotels where you might find work. Alternatively, try one of the many bars where skiers and snowboarders enjoy some apres ski.

Banff Mount Norquay is a main resort in the national park. The resort begins recruiting for winter staff in November. www.banffnorquay.com
Lake Louise is a major ski resort. It is a four seasons resort with positions available all year round. Winter position interviews begin in September. www.skilouise.com
The Fairmont Chateau is a huge luxury hotel in Lake Louise. www.fairmont.com/lake-louise/
The Sunshine Village Resort is another big employer in the Banff region. They hold an open day in the town of Banff in September. www.skibanff.com
Calgary hosted the 1988 Winter Olympics. It is the largest city in Alberta with a population of around 950,000 people. If you miss out on a job in a resort you may pick up work in the city. And Calgary is close enough to the snow to keep up your passion of skiing or snowboarding.
Jasper National Park is vast and houses a number of ski resorts. The town of Jasper is also a good place to secure work as the town has many hotels and bars.
Marmot Basin is located in the Jasper National Park. It requires staff all year round. Marmot Basin does not provide accommodation for staff but will supply a list of rented accommodation contacts. Note that on their website they advise they have a very strict grooming policy. www.skimarmot.com

Other Alberta Ski Resorts

Castle Mountain Resort www.castlemountainresort.com
Fortress Mountain www.skifortress.com
Nakiska hosted the alpine events in the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. www.skinakiska.com
Wintergreen www.skiwintergreen.com

British Columbia BC

British Columbia has the most and some of the biggest resorts. Whistler-Blackcomb could be a contender for the title of ‘world’s greatest ski resort’. Some of the coastal resorts are only 15 minutes away from downtown Vancouver therefore, if you don’t find work in the ski fields you could always find work in this major Canadian city. These resorts are divided into coastal, Vancouver Island and Interior BC resorts.

Only 20 minutes away from the centre of Vancouver are:

Cypress Mountain (formerly Cypress Bowl) www.cypressbowl.com
Grouse Mountain www.grousemountain.com
Hemlock Resort www.hemlockvalleyresort.com
Mount Seymour www.mountseymour.com

Whistler is renowned for its cuisine, with more than 90 restaurants catering to many tastes. When the sun goes down the apres ski begins in the abundance of pubs, lounges and nightclubs.

Essential Tips for Your Ski Season in Canada

Organise your SIN (Social Insurance Number). This is a very important number to live and work in Canada. You cannot legally work without one. Apply for it as soon as you arrive in Canada from a Service Canada centre.

Open a bank account so you can be paid into.

Purchase a local sim card so you can contact employers.

Be flexible when looking for a ski resort job. If you don’t get your dream job in your dream location, it may be possible to switch later in the season. Some of the smaller resorts are just as good as the bigger ones.

Have travel insurance to cover you while you work and ski Canada. World Nomads insurance is available to travellers from over 140 countries and covers you for many things, including working holidays and ski holidays. Another insurance company to check out, particularly if you are travelling long term or are a digital nomad going to spend time working and living in a Canadian ski resort, or nearby. And that is Safety Wing. No matter which travel insurance company you choose to cover you, just make sure you have travel insurance. I’m not saying you will break your leg skiing or snowboarding – it is just good to know you have winter sports coverage in your insurance policy to cover any accidents or incidentals. And travel insurance is a requirement of the IEC working holiday program to receive your work permit to work a ski season in Canada.

Are You Ready to Work a Ski Season in Canada?

As you have read, there are many Canadian ski resorts where you could find a job. And each year literally thousands of travellers arrive to work a ski season in Canada. Now it is your turn. If you are planning your trip to Canada ask away in the comments or if you have already worked a Canadian ski season I would love to hear.

Many want to move abroad and live and work in Canada, and why wouldn’t you? Canada is a vast country, stretching across the top of the North American continent from the Pacific to the Atlantic. It’s known for its wild and spectacular scenery, native wildlife, exciting ski resorts and vibrant cities. Making it the perfect country to choose for a working holiday! And if you are aged between 18-35 years of age and from certain countries, you may be eligible for the Canada working holiday visa.

In this post I will run through the legalities for going on a working holiday visa to Canada, Plus, provide information on what to do when you arrive as well as information how to go about finding a place to live and getting a job. Once these things are done you can get on with living, working and playing in Canada on your Canada working holiday.

Why Go to Canada on a Working Holiday?

Canada is one of the most popular working holiday destinations. It is up there with a UK working holiday. Not sure if Canada is for you! Well here are some reasons why it might be a great option.

Pros of Moving to Canada on a Working Holiday Visa

Firstly, Canada is an outdoor enthusiasts paradise. With impressive mountains, crystal clear blue lakes with incredible views. During the warmer months you can undertake hikes and mountain biking through the mountains. In the winter months there is plenty of snow to enjoy skiing, snowboarding and other winter pursuits. And the ski areas provide a heap of jobs.

There is also plenty of wildlife to see in their natural habitats. Large deer roam around but keep your distance from the Bears! Canada though, isn’t all about the outdoors.

There are many vibrant cities to explore. Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal to name a few. Each offering unique sites to see and plenty of bars, cafes and restaurants to spend your time in. You could even get a job in hospitality in one of these establishments on your Canadian working holiday visa. Sound Good? Well read on.

Cons of Moving to Canada on a Working Holiday Visa

The only con I can think of is the weather. Canada has some harsh weather. Some say, winter lasts for 9 months of the year. But I think the advantages of a Canadian working holiday far outweigh the negative.

Canada Working Holiday Visa Program

The Canada Working Holiday Visa program is managed by a section of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT). It is called International Experience Canada (IEC).

In order to be eligible for this type of visa in Canada, your home country, or place of citizenship must have an agreement that will allow you to work with an IEC work permit. If you are eligible to apply, you’ll be placed into a pool of IEC candidates. Upon completing your profile with IEC you’ll have the option to apply to one or more pools, depending on your eligibility. The three categories include:

Working Holiday

Young Professionals

International Co-op (internship)

You need an invitation to apply to the pools

Canada’s working holiday program works a little different to most working holiday programs. To apply for the working holiday visa for Canada, you will need to create an online profile with IEC when the pools for the current season open. You will then need to wait until you receive an invitation.

When you receive an invitation to apply to one or more of the pools, you aren’t automatically granted a work permit. You’ll have 10 days to decide if you want to accept the invitation. Once you accept the invitation, you’ll have 20 days to apply. You’ll need to provide a wide range of information including proof of the information you included in your IEC profile, educational and work history and other supporting documents. Gathering some documents may take more time than anticipated. It’s suggested that you begin sourcing the documentation needed upon being placed in a pool as an IEC candidate. Certain countries may also require a medical exam, so check the list before applying!

Every year the number of visas that Canada can give out, changes. There are a quota and different rounds of invitations depending on what country you are coming from. Once approved and granted the visa you’re allowed to work and travel in Canada for up to 12 months (or 24 months for certain countries).

The Criteria of the Canada Working Holiday Visa

If you are between the age of 18 and 35 years old and from one of the following countries you can apply. Countries are Australia, Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan and the United Kingdom.

If you’re from a country that isn’t listed as eligible for a working holiday visa, there are other ways you can work and travel in Canada. Certain countries are able to apply through an RO (registered organization). For example, the organization SWAP allows Americans to obtain a work permit in Canada.

Eligibility requirements

Aged between 18-35 years old (inclusive) at the time of application from one of the countries mentioned.

Have a valid passport that won’t expire during your stay in Canada

Have at least CAD2,500 to cover your initial expenses in Canada

Have travel insurance to cover the length of your stay

Have a return plane ticket or enough money to purchase one

After applying for your working holiday visa, it will take a couple of months on average to hear about a final decision. If you are approved, you’ll receive a Port of Entry Letter (POE) that you must bring with you to show to border services. And you will have a whole year to enter Canada and officially start your working holiday in Canada.

When you arrive in Canada, Immigration will stamp your passport with an authorisation. Then you’ll need to complete a number of tasks before you can begin to live, work and play in Canada. These are the things I suggest you do.

Purchase a phone. Having a phone will help you get the following sorted.

Register for a SIN (Social Insurance Number). If you are going to work in Canada, you will need one of these to get paid. SIN stands for Social Insurance Number and is the same as the Tax File Number in Australia, Social Security Number in the USA or Numéro de Sécurité Sociale in France. Get this as soon as possible. You can download the form here and complete it before you go to Canada. Or pick one up at the airport when you arrive or in any Post Canada or Service Canada office. Then find your nearest Service Canada office to apply. Don’t forget to take along your passport and work permit. You will be asked for a permanent address – you can use your place of work or your accommodation address. You will receive your SIN on the same day which is a piece of paper. Ensure you keep it safe as it will be required to show employers so you are taxed correctly.

Open a bank account. This is required because employers pay wages directly in to a bank account. There are 5 big banks in Canada to consider. Toronto Dominion (TD Canada Trust), Bank of Nova Scotia (Scotiabank), Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) and the Bank of Montreal (BMO). Take to your passport, work permit, SIN or Acknowledgement of Application Letter of your SIN and Canadian address (you can use your hostel address) to your chosen bank and get your account opened.

Find somewhere to live. This can be the hardest thing you will do on your working holiday in Canada. Depending on the city or town you choose to live and work in.

Find a job.

Living in Canada – Accommodation Options

There are many options when it comes to accommodation in Canada. Choosing a short-term option upon arrival is suggested. It will provide you with enough time to sort out any legalities (opening a bank account, SIN, etc.). Also let you get to know the city or town you’re going to be living in, find a job and long term accommodation to suit your needs. I suggest you definitely book for one week initial stay. However, two weeks will give you more time to get over jet lag and get things sorted.

Hostels are a great place to begin your journey as they are often full of other travellers embarking on a similar experience. They offer many things including Wifi, restaurants, cafes and cooking facilities and are usually conveniently located. Some even offer job advice and may have links to potential employers. Depending on the city you are arriving in here are some suggested hostel options.

Vancouver – HI Hostels Vancouver, Samesun Vancouver Hostel
Toronto – The Clarence Park, The Only Backpackers Inn, Parkdale Hostellerie
Montreal – Auberge Hi Montreal, Samesun Montreal Central

If you want something a little more upscale, consider a hotel. The advantage here is you can choose to have your own room. Use Booking.com to compare and book your hotel stay. Some suggested hotel options follow.

Vancouver – Barclay Hotel, Days Inn By Wyndham
Toronto – Toronto Don Valley Hotel and Suites, Courtyard by Marriot Hotel Downtown
Montreal – InterContinental Montreal, Chateau Versailles

You can also find options somewhere in the middle such as a 2-4 week sublet or stay in someone’s room or apartment. Airbnb or Facebook groups are great to book these kinds of stays! Other great sites to consider finding long-term accommodation include My Hood, Rentboard and Apartments Canada. Ensure you bring references from previous landlords as they will help you to secure a place.

Unless you secure a sub-let, almost all rental properties in Canada are unfurnished. Not great news when you are a traveller on a working holiday in Canada because you don’t want to have to spend money on furniture. This is why many stay in long-term hostels. However, you can find cheap furniture in thrift shops and on websites like Craigslist.

Working in Canada

Canada is a very large country situated on top of the United States of America. In fact, it’s the second largest country in the world after Russia so probably large is a better word to describe Canada’s size. Despite it’s size about 90% of the population live within 200km of the American border with the rest of the countryside to the north being vast and mountainous. Within this 200km range are a number of major Canadian cities where working holiday makers base themselves. They include Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Calgary and Edmonton.

Most English speakers find work in the English speaking provinces of British Columbia and Alberta on the West Coast of Canada and Ontario on the East Coast. Quebec is the only predominantly French-speaking province in the country. This doesn’t bring about much employment unless you are proficient in speaking French.

Types of Travel Jobs in Canada

Office Jobs in the major Cities

Many find work in major cities such as Toronto or Vancouver, as they offer a range of office-based (accounting, banking, administration) and hospitality work. Best to register with an agency for office work or look online.

Work and Ski Canada – Get a Job in a Canadian Ski Resort

Canada is known for some of its world-famous ski resorts and you could easily find yourself working and skiing at one! Large numbers of travellers find work in the Rocky Mountain ski hills every year. In particular Alberta, in the resort towns of Banff and Jasper. Whistler and Revelstoke are also popular destinations in British Columbia.

The main ski season is from November and December to March and April but it all boils down to mother nature. Some winters and snowy days will extend as late as May each year. While other years it’s already summer weather by then! Most resorts are open year-round, as mountain biking and hiking takes over during the warmer months. This means the resorts are on the lookout for staff all year round, making it possible to find a job at almost any point in time.

The type of work available includes snow sports instructors, hospitality staff in the cafes, bars and lodges, maintenance staff, ski lift ticket sellers and child carers to name a few. Finding work at a resort is fairly easy, as most people simply turn up and ask to apply for a position. Or make friends who refer them. You can also do your own research by looking through various resorts’ websites and applying to job openings directly. Also check out websites like Natives.co.uk and JobMonkey.com.

Getting a job in the Canadian ski resorts will let you learn or hone some skills that you could then work and ski all around the world. What about working and skiing in Europe, Japan, Australia or New Zealand? Or perhaps work and travel abroad as a ski or snowboard instructor.

Pick Fruits and Vegetables in Canada

The Okanagan Valley in British Columbia stretches over some 200km. It supports nearly 30,000 acres of orchards where peaches, pears, plums, cherries, apricots, apples and grapes are grown. Major growing areas are Armstrong, Vernon, Kelowna, Peachland, Summerland, Penticton, Okanagan Falls, Oliver, Osoyoos and Keremeos.

The harvesting dates vary from area to area but begin around June and end as late as November. So, if you don’t mind hard work, early mornings and working in a variety of outdoor conditions, then this might be the option for you! It’s also a great option if you’re planning to arrive in Canada during the summer and are having trouble picking up a job elsewhere, as it’s always in demand.

To find farm work in Canada, search online through job portals or contact growers directly. The province of Ontario offers some farm work around the Niagara area (about 2 hours from Toronto), where there are peaches, pears, plums, cherries and tomato harvest. The season is short-lived, starting mid-August and lasting about 2 months. If you’re seeking longer farm work employment, you may have better luck in other provinces.

Nanny and Au Pair Jobs in Canada

If you have experience working with children, becoming a nanny or au pair might be the right fit for you! As a nanny or Au Pair, you’d live with a Canadian family and look after the children during the week. Most often you’d have your own room within the house, taking away all stress of finding a place to live. Sometimes food and other bonuses are included with being a nanny, making it a desirable position to have during your working holiday in Canada. There are many job portals specific to nannies/au pairs, making the process of finding this type of work that much easier.

Other Work Options in Canada

Do you want to share your experience living abroad in Canada with friends and family? If so, why not start a blog about your time in Canada? You can hone in on Canada as a specific niche and see where it takes you! Or be a digital nomad in Canada and continue working on-line.

Canada offers many work options for working holiday makers and many choose to work in the hostel they are staying. If you don’t mind being on reception checking in and out visitors, cleaning the bathrooms and making beds then ask at the hostel you are staying if any jobs are going? For your work you should receive a wage and a free accommodation.

Where to Look for a Job in Canada

Playing and Travelling in Canada

The best part of any working holiday is the playing and travelling part. So, once you have yourself sorted with accommodation and a job you can begin to play and travel in Canada. How you play, is up to you, but there is plenty to see and do. You can spend your time exploring the major cities, hitting the bars, cafes and restaurants to enjoy the local foods like Beaver Tails, Poutine, Tourtière and Smores. And no, I’m not telling you what they are, because they are there for you to experience first-hand while on your Canadian working holiday.

Maybe enjoy the great outdoors visiting the mountains to ski, snowboard, mountain bike or hike. Or travel further afield undertaking a 1 month Canada journey from one side of the country to the other or discover the cities like Montreal, Winnipeg and Vancouver on a 2 day or long visit.

Are You Ready to Live and Work in Canada on a Working Holiday Visa?

Regardless of the type of work you find, Canada is a fantastic place to live, work, play and travel. Having the option to spend more than a few weeks in Canada allows you to truly experience the Canadian way of life. You’ll be saying ‘eh’ and drinking maple syrup by the bottle before you know it!
