For many of us we associate Central and South America with icons like the Panama Canal, the Andes and the Amazon Rainforest. And throw in some great tasting food. And if you dream of reducing your living costs while immersing yourself in another culture, then you could if you qualify for a digital nomad visa to live and work in Central and South America. 

Central and South America spans from Mexico’s southern border to the tip of Chile and is home to some 17 countries. And, a lot of them are introducing digital nomad visas. If Central America and or South America is on your radar for your next digital nomad destination, then read on.

What is a Digital Nomad Visa?

I am presuming if you are reading this you know what a digital nomad visa is, but let me give you a quick recap. A digital nomad visa is a visa that allows remote workers the opportunity to live and work online in another country. 

Digital nomad visas can be called different names. They can be known as freelance visas, remote worker visas, expat visas, online worker visas, and a number of other unique names. But they work similarly – allowing you to live and work online for an extended period in another country.

Digital Nomad Visa Regulations

Each country has their own regulations you must meet to get the visa. In general you will need to:

• Complete an application online
• Have a valid passport
• Be earning a certain amount of income and provide proof that you have sufficient funds to support yourself
• Have health insurance
• Have no criminal record
• Pay a visa cost

If you qualify for said visa, you can legally live and work for 6+ months in the country. What a great way to immerse yourself in a new culture.

Why Live and Work in Central and South America?

Why not live and work in Central and South America is what you should be asking yourself. If you are chasing a cheaper lifestyle and great food, then a digital nomad visa should be top of your list. Key reasons to choose a digital nomad visa in either Central or South America:

• Affordable Lifestyle. Yep, the cost of living in most Central American and South American nations, are cheaper and can provide a better lifestyle than your own country. This allows a better quality of life. The technical term for this is geoarbitrage.

• Proximity and Time Zone. Central and South America is a great time zone to live in. No getting up in the middle of the night to take a conference call – well, that will depend on where you clients are!

Costa Rica, Rentista Digital Nomad Visa

Enjoy the beaches, waterfalls, volcanoes and vibrant cities of Costa Rica on the long stay visa available. Costa Rica is also a great base in South America for you to launch your travels around the continent. Even better news is the long visa available, the freelancer visa, called the Rentista. It allows individuals a stay of up to two years with the possibility of extending it for another two years. With great Wifi and a cheap cost of living Costa Rica is a good digital nomad destination. The only downside is you must have income from your online work of at least $2500 per month. El Salvador

Offers a digital nomad visa for remote workers, freelancers, and entrepreneurs with foreign income, requiring proof of stable income and private health insurance.

Panama, Short Stay Visa

The government of Panama established the Short Stay Visa for Remote Workers in May 2021. This visa allows foreigners to reside in Panama for a minimum of 9 months and work remotely. This kind of remote work can only be done for a foreign corporation or as a freelancer with no ties to the home country. An extra 9-month extension is attainable, bringing the total allowed stay period to 18 months. To apply for this visa contact your nearest Panama embassy or consulate.

Countries in South America with a Digital Nomad Visa

Argentina

Argentina is a must-see destination for travelers because of the country’s diverse landscape, which includes mountains, hills, glaciers, beaches, and even a desert. It’s no wonder that, with everything Argentina offers, people from other countries seek ways to make a fresh start there. On May 21, 2022, the government of Argentina introduced a unique visa for telecommuters. With Argentina’s digital nomad visa, travelers may work remotely for foreign or domestic businesses. Brazil

Brazil offers  a 1-year visa (renewable for another year) for remote workers earning at least $1,500 USD per month.

Columbia

Offers a specialised “V” visa for digital nomads.

Ecuador, Rentista Visa

The Rentista visa, valid for up to two years in Ecuador, provides new opportunities for entrepreneurs, digital nomads, and remote employees. A digital nomad visa for Ecuador may be extended for two years. The application procedure for a digital nomad (Rentista) visa in Ecuador might take up to three months to be granted. Mexico, Temporary Resident Visa

Mexico, south of the USA and north of many South American countries offers the digital nomad or remote worker a great base. It offers cheap accommodation, great wifi and who doesn’t love Mexican food? You can stay in Mexico for up to six months on a tourist visa but the Mexico temporary resident visa is the way to go if you want to stay for a full year in the country. And it can be extended up to three times. 

Mexico is a popular digital nomad destination with Play de Carmen a hotspot because of its infrastructure and large number of digital nomads living there already. This may also be an option.

Uruguay

Features a straightforward, often no-income-requirement visa for remote workers, valid for 180 days with an extension option.

Where to Live when You Move to Central or South America

Don’t Work Online or Don’t Qualify for a Digital Nomad Visa?

Not everyone works online and not everyone qualifies for a digital nomad visa. And that doesn’t mean you can’t live and work abroad. There are other visas available that allow you to move abroad or help you travel full-time.

I arrived in Los Angeles to spend 3 weeks with my American girlfriend Lisa, and she suggested we go to Cancun. As a surprise she had already booked and paid for a one week trip to Cancun with accommodation at the Fiesta Americana Condesa. I was extremely excited to go to Mexico, as I hadn’t been to the Yucutan Peninsula before. If you are planning a trip to this part of Mexico and are wondering where to stay, I highly recommend the Fiesta Americana, and this is why This is my honest hotel review of Fiesta Americana Condesa.

Firstly, Where is Cancun in Mexico?

Cancun is located on the northeastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, in the young state of Quintana Roo in Mexico. It faces the Caribbean Sea and is a sun-worshippers and water sports lovers paradise. Throw in fabulous Mexican food and nightlife and this is why my friend had chosen for us to holiday in Cancun. 

Where to Stay in Cancun?

There are plenty of accommodation options ranging from budget hostels to hotels to all-inclusive resorts to stay in Cancun. Accommodation can be found in the downtown area but my friend booked a twin room at the all-inclusive resort on the Cancun Hotel Zone or Zona Hotelera – the Fiesta Americana Condesa. Blvd. Kukulkán km 16.5 , Zona Hotelera, 77500, Cancún, Quintana Roo, México.

Why Stay at the Fiesta Americana Condesa?

My girlfriend actually booked and paid for the trip to Cancun, and she chose this all-inclusive resort for a number of reasons. And after staying there for our one week in Cancun, I can see why she chose it. If you let me sound like a tourist brochure for a moment, the Fiesta Americana Condesa is a high end all-inclusive resort with 11 restaurants and rooms with fabulous views over the crystal clear waters of The Caribbean Sea or the and Nichupte Lagoon. The hotel had absolutely everything we needed for a great stay in Cancun. To be more specific:

What does All-inclusive Resort Mean?

If you go on an all-inclusive vacation, it means most things, if not all are included in the price. So your stay at the accommodation, food, drinks, activities and entertainment are included in the booking price of the resort. 

This is a great way to budget for your holiday as there will be no surprise costs.

For me at Fiesta Americana Condesa my friend chose a package that included our airfare, pick up from and to the Cancun International Airport, buffet breakfast and accommodation. I do recall paying for drinks at happy hour and for dinner in a couple of the restaurants. Lisa always does her research and often gets great hotel deals.

Location of Fiesta Americana Condesa

The location of the Fiesta Americana Condesa was perfect. It is found along Cancun’s hotel zone that overlooks the Caribbean Sea and the Nichupte Lagoon. It is 20 minutes away from Cancun International Airport and a short drive from downtown Cancun. You can find it at Blvd.Kukulkán km 16.5 Zona Hotelera, Cancun.

The Look of the Fiesta Americana Condesa

My first sight of Fiesta Americana Condesa was of the large palapa. A palapa is an open-sided dwelling with a thatched roof made of dried palm leaves. It is great for hot weather as it is open letting the air flow through. Check-in and out reception was located under the palapa before being directed to our room in one of the buildings. There was lots of greenery in and around the common areas softening the concrete structure. Most of the rooms have a view of Nichupte Lagoon or over the hotel pool and ocean. And I spent many an hour by the pool and at the beach so pack for a beach holiday.

Our room at the Fiesta Americana was a twin room with a fabulous view over the pool, beach and the Caribbean Sea. There were two double beds, modern furniture, a TV, a bathroom with complimentary soaps and shampoos and a small balcony with a fabulous view. The room had everything we needed for a comfortable stay.

The Pool and the Beach

The pool at the Fiesta Americana Condesa is huge and has a swim-up bar. I think the water was slightly heated but it was so hot in Cancun at the time of my visit, that the water temperature really didn’t matter. It was just so wonderful to cool off in. I really liked how the pool had a ledge where small kids could play on or you could lie with your sunbed on. And speaking of sunbeds, there were plenty of them and free towels and umbrellas. Though some mornings guests would claim a sunbed and not move from that spot all day!

There was a short walk to the beach where you could play on the sand, swim between the waves or snorkel. We enjoyed walking along the beach late in the afternoon before heading inside to change for ‘Happy Hour’ at the Bar. Some days there was plenty of seaweed on the beach which smelt and was annoying, but you can’t help Mother Nature!

Restaurants

Fiesta Americana Condesa has a number of restaurants, 11 in fact which are offer casual and fine dining. My favourite was the laid back The Grill where between swims we could grab a quick bite and drink. Other restaurants included La Cevicheria offering stunning views over the Caribbean waters. I had lunch here a number of times – the Fajitas were to die for! El Mexicano where you could enjoy Mexican flavours and traditional beer. Of a morning we went to Kalmia to enjoy delicious buffet breakfast, but it was also open all day. If you love sushi there is the Sushi Corner and if you love Italian food head to Trattoria or Rosato for some formal Italian dining. There is food for everyone, even vegetarians, vegans and those preferring gluten free foods.

Gift Shop

Of course there was a gift shop offering boutique clothes, essential items like sunscreen and Mexican souvenirs.

Tour Desk and Concierge

The Fiesta Americana Condesa had a tour desk which was very helpful in arranging tours. Lisa and I booked onto a day trip to Chichen Itza. We were picked up in the morning from the hotel, driven to Chichen Itza where we explored the ruins, before returning to the hotel. You could arrange many things here including other tours to Cozumel or Tulum, to name a couple. But there are plenty of other things to see and do while in Cancun.

There was a concierge at the front of the hotel who was able to organise a number of things. On a couple of occasions they called us a taxi so we could go into downtown Cancun shopping and enjoying a drink in a bar. If you want to rent a car in Mexico, the Concierge can help you with that too.

What is a Digital Nomad and Can I be one in Mexico?

Thanks to lockdowns during covid the world witnessed a growing trend for workers to work online remotely. This has led to many countries introducing a visa to attract those who work online and digital nomads the opportunity to live and work abroad in another country. This is because digital nomads and online workers generate income for their country. One of the top destinations for digital nomads in recent years is Mexico. 

Does Mexico have a Digital Nomad Visa?

At this time, Mexico does not have a digital nomad visa, but it is hoped it will introduce one. So how have so many remote workers and digital nomads been living and working in Mexico? Well, most have been using the traditional tourist permit that allows foreigners to stay in Mexico for up to 180 days. If they want to stay longer than this, they will do a ‘visa run’ where they go to another country and then return to Mexico on another tourist visa for another 180 days visit.

Mexico’s Temporary Residence Visa

The main option to live and work in Mexico at the moment is to apply for a Temporary Residence Visa. If eligible and granted this visa, you can live and work in Mexico for up to 4 years.

To apply for the Temporary Residence Visa you need to follow the application process which involves you:

• Contacting your nearest Mexican embassy or consulate to get the latest details and an application form + get the Mexico entry requirements in order to travel to the country.
• Completing the Temporary Residence Visa application form.
• Submit the required supporting documents at the embassy. 
• Pay the visa fee.  
• Return to the embassy to pick up the visa once it has been processed.

Supporting documents to include to apply for the Temporary Residence Visa include:

• A bank balance of at least 43,000 USD for the last 12 months.
• You are the owner of a Mexican property (worth at least 346,000 USD)
• You’ve had an income of at least 2,595 USD per month for the last 6 months

Other Documents Required to Get a Mexico Temporary Residence Visa

As well as providing proof of your financial status, you will also need to provide other documents.

• Passport with minimum validity of 6 months from the date you apply.
• Recent passport-size photograph.
• Proof of a clean criminal record.
• Medical insurance evidence.

If granted the visa, once you arrive in Mexico, you are required to exchange the visa for a Temporary Residence Card at the Instituto Nacional de Migracion (INM) in Mexico. Then you will have your legal resident status and begin living, working and playing in Mexico.

All the above may change if Mexico introduce a dedicated digital nomad visa. Fingers crossed!

It can be a rig moral to get the temporary residence visa but having one provides a lot of benefits. You will be able to:

• Travel in and out of Mexico like any other Mexican resident. Or you may want to slow-travel around Mexico and discover some of the best places Mexico has to offer, such as the Mayan history at Chichen Itza.
• Access healthcare through Mexico’s IMSS if you get sick.
• Acquire a Mexican driver’s licence.
• If you love living in Mexico and stay the full four years, you can transition to permanent residency.

• Cheaper cost of living. But this does depend on where you decide to stay.
• Great internet in most locations so you can work online. This is an essential for digital nomads.

Other Visa Options to Live and Work in Mexico

At this time, Mexico has a working holiday visa available to citizens aged 18 to 30 years of age from Canada, France, Germany, New Zealand and South Korea. If you successfully apply and receive this visa you can live and work in Mexico for up to 12 months. Most who get this visa will do typical backpacker travel jobs to support themselves while in the country.

Peruvians, Chileans and Colombians can apply for the Pacific Alliance working holiday visa. This visa is also valid for one year.

Digital Nomad Hotspots – Where to Live in Mexico?

Mexico has been extremely popular with remote workers, ex-pats and working holiday makers for a long time. This means there are many favoured spots perfect to set up home to live and work in Mexico.

Hotspots include, but not limited to, are Mexico City and Playa del Carmen. Mexico City is loved because it is the capital city, and has all the amenities a working holiday maker or digital nomad requires. If wanting to get out of a big city, consider the beach holiday hot spots in Playa del Carmen. Other places to consider include Mérida, Oaxaca and Puerto Vallarta. But the choice is yours as there are so many places to truly experience Mexican culture while continuing to work from home online or doing a typical backpacker travel job.

One of the best spots in Mexico City is the Historic Center. Filled with impressive colonial buildings, an ancient Aztec temple, and a happening central plaza called the Zocalo, Mexico City’s Historic District is surely an interesting place to visit.

The remarkable Metropolitan Cathedral, one of the oldest and largest in Latin America, flanks the northern end of Zocalo. To the east, you’ll see the imposing façade of the National Palace, the seat of the Mexican government and home to many amazing murals by Diego Rivera. The Templo Mayor ruins dating the 14^th century are right around the corner.

As you stroll through Avenida 5 de Mayo, you’ll come across several historic buildings and museums. Some of the most iconic ones include Palacio de Bellas Artes, Casa de los Azulejos, Torre Latinoamericana, and the Postal Palace.

The historic district is always a hub of activity and the main venue for events and festivities. If you’re visiting in October – November, be sure to catch the colorful Day of Dead celebrations at the Zocalo.

Without a doubt, the Historic Center, also a UNESCO world heritage site, is the throbbing heart of Mexico City.

Cancun

Cancun is one of the hottest places in Mexico to visit. It is situated on the Yucatan Peninsula facing the Caribbean Sea and was once an alligator infested swamp. Nowadays it is a place for sun worshippers to enjoy golden sands and water sports in turquoise coloured waters. 

It is quite easy to laze your days away at your Cancun resort as they offer absolutely all the things you need for a holiday by the sea. But you should go into the main town and partake in great shopping and tasty food. This is where I discovered ‘conch’ – a tasty mollusc that when cooked with herbs and spices is a very yummy dish. And the nightlife can be whatever you want it to be. From fine dining to partying the night away in a nightclub.

And when you get tired of the beach you can go on a day tour to see the ancient Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza. Or visit some of the nearby towns such as Tulum or islands off the coast for great snorkelling or diving!

Without a doubt one of the most popular things to do on a holiday in Mexico is to visit and swim in one of the country’s cenotes. Formed from the collapse of limestone rocks these natural sinkhole swimming pools are a must for any visitor. In the area of Quintano Roo on the Yucatan Peninsula and close to the historic ruins of Tulum are quite a few cenotes. They range from huge open-air swim holes to those hidden inside caves. There’s even one with a resident crocodile that swims with guests.

Two favourite Tulum cenotes are Chen Ha and Mariposa located in Canamayte Eco Park. Once in the eco-park you can easily move between the two. Chen-Ha is an underground cave cenote with a small roof opening that lets in sunlight. The water is cold, clear and aqua blue and makes for a refreshing swim. Like most cenotes if you duck beneath the water you are able to see a black void where the river system runs throughout the cenotes. It’s a bit frightening not knowing what might be lurking beneath. But then again that’s half of the thrill of swimming in a cenote!

Mariposa is, in comparison to Chen Ha, a bigger cenote and completely open-air. It even has a few wooden swings for those all important instagram photographs. The water is clear and inviting and floating around on your back looking up at blue skies and wispy white clouds is pretty relaxing. Not many places in the world have cenotes and so to experience one for yourself is a must when holidaying in Mexico.

Guanajuato

Guanajuato City or just Guanajuato, located about 240 miles or 390 kilometers northwest of Mexico City, is a cultural, historical, and vibrant city. The whole city of is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so it is well preserved and taken care of. It is a medium sized city that deserves a minimum of one day to visit but two days is ideal to see the must visit sites and attractions.

Guanajuato City is a university town, in the heart of the city lies the beautiful steps to Universidad de Guanajuato. From here, you can get great views of the city. In front of the university is the Basilica of our Lady Guanajuato, one of the prettiest Basilicas in the region. For those that are more adventurous, a quick cab ride to the mountains surrounding the city are the mines that made Guanajuato famous. Today, visitors can explore the mines with a guided tour. Another must see attraction in Guanajuato is the Museo Exhacienda San Gabriel de Barrera. An estate owned by the Barrera family in the area. A visit to Guanajuato can’t be done without visiting the statue of El Pipila on top of the hill overlooking the city. You get the best views from this location.

For visitors that are into dark tourism, Guanajuato has one of the most morbid museums, Museo de las Momias. This museum is home to 59 mummies that are on display that died during a cholera outbreak in the mid 1800’s.

Ciudad Juarez

Ciudad Juarez, located in the state of Chihuahua, is one of my favourite spots in Mexico! Whilst several years ago it was deemed one of the most dangerous cities in the world, today Juarez is a different place! It receives many tourists each year and has unique attractions and qualities that make it a great place to visit.

Ciudad Juarez is a border town, situated across the Rio Grande from El Paso, Texas, USA. Its location offers a fascinating blend of Mexican and American cultures, where you can experience the best of both worlds – enjoying the vibrant Mexican atmosphere while having easy access to American amenities. Plus, it’s very easy to cross the border from Ciudad Juarez into El Paso for a day trip.

Exploring Ciudad Juarez allows visitors to appreciate its architecture, history, and cultural sites. The Cathedral of Ciudad Juarez and the Museum of the Revolution in the Border are just two of the many interesting places that showcase the cultural heritage of Juarez.

Ciudad Juarez has a great culinary scene. Visitors can enjoy authentic Mexican cuisine, including street tacos and enchiladas, as well as explore international dishes influenced by the city’s proximity to the USA.

Ciudad Juarez also offers a more affordable cost of living compared to many cities. Housing, transportation, and everyday expenses can be lower, making it an attractive option for expats and retirees. In addition, the people of Juarez are known for their warm hospitality and friendliness.

Merida

Merida, the capital of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, is a hidden gem that should be more widely known among tourists. Its location near various Mayan archaeological sites makes it an ideal base for exploring the region. Visitors can easily take day trips to popular destinations like Uxmal and Chichen Itza, as well as Cancun, Tulum, and Riviera Maya. 

Despite its many attractions, Merida remains a safe and walkable city with a tropical climate. The average annual temperature hovers around 28°C – 30°C, though it can get quite hot between March and May. To promote tourism in the area, the local municipality organizes free events each night in different parts of town. These events are a joy to attend and offer a glimpse into local culture. 

Merida is also home to several notable landmarks, including the impressive 16th-century Cathedral of Merida, one of the oldest cathedrals in the Americas. Other popular attractions include the Spanish-style arched City Hall, known as Palacio Municipal, which still serves as the seat of the local government. The government palace of the state of Yucatan, Palacio de Gobierno, and Casa de Montejo, a colonial mansion built in the 16th century by the founders of Merida, the Montejo family, are also worth a visit.

Xochimilco

Venture to Xochimilco, a town 14 miles southwest of Mexico City. It’s known as the town of “floating gardens”, and it has the only canals left from a vast lake system covering Mexico City.

Visit this pre-colonial town and wind down the canals on colorful gondolas, known as trajineras. This is my favorite spot in Mexico because of its convenient location and fascinating boat ride. Get dropped off at any “embarcadero” point, and choose which boat you would like to take for your journey. Each of the boats has a unique name and is decorated differently.

A local will guide you along your two-hour journey, while you relax and admire all of the other beautiful boats on your path. Listen out for floating mariachi bands to fully immerse yourself in the experience. Food and drink vendors float up to your raft too, so settle in and enjoy the ride.

Sundays are the busiest and loudest, so avoid visiting that day if possible. Mention the Island of the Dolls to your driver, and glide path a deserted island full of baby dolls hanging from the trees.

This experience is unique and easy to add to any Mexico City itinerary. Once you see all of the colorful trajineras and hear the upbeat mariachi bands, you will understand why this is a must-visit destination in Mexico.

Isla Ixtapa

For travelers looking to explore beyond the beaches of oversize resorts, visit tiny Ixtapa Island. This island is a short one-mile water taxi away from the Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo area of Mexico’s Pacific Coast. Great for a day trip.

Once there, step into a laid-back world with no cars or even roads. A dreamy destination where nearly every structure is open-air, designed to maximize its ocean and Sierra Madre del Sur mountain views.

Spend your day swimming in calm surf off one of three golden sand beaches. Or rent snorkel gear and explore independently or with a guide. Discover the pretty corals and colorful fish found in the crystalline waters off of Coral Beach.

And when you have built up an appetite, select one from any of the beachside restaurants and dig into local specialties like pescado a las brasas—grilled fish cooked over wood-fired stoves served whole, with fresh tortillas. Wash down your delicious meal with ice-cold beers or frothy pina coladas. All while your toes dig in soft sand, and you settle in to enjoy gentle breezes and the unreal Pacific Ocean views.

My favorite spot in Mexico is definitely Puerto Vallarta! This vibrant city on Mexico’s Pacific Coast has fantastic weather, delicious fresh local cuisine, happening nightlife, and beautiful beaches. But what really sets Puerto Vallarta apart from other locations in Mexico is its vibrant arts.

One of the best things to do in Puerto Vallarta is to take a stroll down the Malecón (oceanfront boardwalk) and admire the fantastic public art. Take in the unique statues and intriguing sand sculptures as well as Puerto Vallarta’s iconic arches overlooking the ocean. As you walk through the city, you’ll be surrounded by pops of bright colors decorating everything from planters to statues to buildings.

One of the most colorful parts of Puerto Vallarta is the Parque Lázaro Cárdenas. This unique mosaic tile park is filled with dozens of brightly colored benches and columns. Admire the abstract swirls, bold geometric patterns, and lovely mosaic scenes adorning this park and making it a vibrant hub of the community.

Baja California Sur

There are many beautiful destinations around the world, but Baja California Sur is our favourite spot in Mexico. A peninsula on the west coast of Mexico, Baja California Sur is blessed with year-round pleasant weather and is teeming with things to do and see.

Between December and April the west cost of Baja California Sur is home to one of the largest whale migrations in the world. Humpbacks perform dazzling acrobatics, while grey whales come inshore to mate and calve in protected lagoons. And on the east coast, nestled in the Sea of Cortez, the sleepy town of Loreto is perfect for seeing blue whales – the largest animal in the world. Loreto Bay National park is also a haven for divers and snorkellers. Hikers can enjoy Tabor Canyon or visit the ancient La Pinguica cave paintings. The vibrant capital city of Baja California Sur, La Paz is not to be missed. Home to colonial history and beautiful beaches, you can enjoy snorkel trips with sea lions and even tick swimming with whale sharks off your bucket list. Those looking for an adrenaline fix should head to Los Cabos. Cabo San Lucas is a popular spring break destination. While San José del Cabo has a more laidback and artistic vibe.

Baja California Sur is easily accessible via several international airports, including in La Paz and Los Cabos. Hiring a car is easy and a great way to get around. And the Autobuses Aguila are super affordable and connect all the major cities.

Todos Santos, Baja California

Todos Santos is one of the most beautiful Pueblos Magic’s in Baja California Sur. It is a popular beach destination for travellers from all over the world. Located just under one hour away from Cabo San Lucas, Todos Santos boasts year-round sunshine, fun history and wonderful outdoor opportunities like surfing, hiking and mountain biking.

Although Todos Santos might feel like a sleepy town, once you walk the streets of this charming pueblo, you will see that it’s full of life. Cozy cafes line the streets, and you can hear traditional Mexican music playing outside. Local vendors show their arts and crafts on the streets of Todos Santos. You can buy some cool trinkets at the local market where you can find home accessories, jewellery, textiles and other arts and crafts.

If you have more time, don’t miss out on the spectacular Punta Lobos hike offering incredible panoramic views of the Baja California coastline. Or head to Playa Cachorro for an epic sunset. This is a hidden gem located just outside of Todos Santos that can be reached by a quick drive or bike ride.

Overall, Todos Santos offers a perfect getaway from Cabo San Lucas. If you want to see more authentic Baja California and enjoy a more quiet atmosphere.

Grutas de Tolantongo

Grutas de Tolantongo is truly a canyon oasis located in the Mezquital Valley about 4 hours north of Mexico City. Its bright turquoise thermal river against the rugged canyon offers a fantastic escape from reality. The Tolantongo River flows right alongside the canyon resort offering visitors a haven for relaxation in its mineral rich waters. Further up the river, visitors have the opportunity to explore a thermal waterfall with an intricate tunnel and cave system underneath. On the other side of the resort is a section of man-made pools overlooking the picturesque canyon, a perfect spot to catch sunrise.

Not only does this resort feature stunning photo opportunities, it also has 3 hotels located in various areas of the property. Reservations can only be made in person at the resort, however, camping gear is also available for rent. The resort has several options for food located throughout the park. From a grocery store to restaurants, there is no struggle to fix any cravings. The entire resort operates on a cash only basis so be sure to bring enough cash for the duration of your stay.

For those seeking a quick getaway in Mexico, Grutas de Tolantongo offers an enticing blend of relaxation and exploration in a unique yet enchanting landscape. It will surely forge unforgettable memories.

Teotihuacan

Teotihuacan is an incredible archaeological site just an hour out of Mexico City.  Built by an ancient civilization that very little is known about. The highlights of the site are two enormous pyramids, the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon. The Pyramid of the Moon lies at the end of a long avenue – the Avenue of the Dead. The avenue is lined on both sides with smaller temples, as well as the even larger Pyramid of the Sun.

At the other end of the site is the Citadel and the Temple of the Feathered Serpent (Quetzalcoatl). If you walk up to the top of the pyramid in the middle of the Citadel, there is a hidden temple that was built over, but has now been uncovered. This temple has amazing, well-preserved carvings that still have some of their original color intact. There’s a replica of this temple in the National Archaeological Museum, but seeing the original is even more awe-inspiring.

Allow a full day to do the site justice. It’s huge and you’ll do a lot of walking, and there is no shade, so wear a hat! Busses leave every 20 minutes or so for to San Juan Teotihuacan from the México Terminal Norte (North Bus Station). It’s also possible to take an Uber if you prefer not to take a bus.

Another super fun option is to take a hot air balloon ride over the pyramids. Seeing the site and the surrounding countryside from the air is mind blowing. Several companies offer sunrise balloon flights with pickups from hotels in Mexico City.

San Jose del Pacifico

Located high up in the mountains of Oaxaca mountains is the small town of San José del Pacifico. Perhaps most well-known for the availability of psychedelic magic mushrooms – thanks to indigenous use for healing – the town is also an incredible place for hiking and taking in mountain views. Sunrise and sunset are simply spectacular here.

For the best view in San Jose, climb up to the Mirador sign above the town. Although the altitude will make this hard work, you’ll get some of the best views around. Here, you can watch the clouds roll over the mountains and valleys. One minute you’ll see nothing but the inside of a cloud and the next you can see for miles and miles.

The altitude also makes it pretty chilly here, especially in the evenings. So, it’s the perfect place to gather around the fire, watch the sunset and sip hot drinks wrapped in a blanket.

Visiting this town is an absolute must-do when in Oaxaca, Mexico and there’s nowhere else quite like it!

Chacahua, Oaxaca

Chacahua, Oaxaca is one of Mexico’s best kept secrets. Nestled on the pacific coast, it’s a dreamy beach paradise that’s perfect for those looking to go off the beaten track.

The surf in Chacahua is what put it on the map in the first place. With its long right-hander break, Chacahua attracts surfers of all levels. But it’s worth a visit regardless of whether you’re here for the waves or not.

The beauty of Chacahua lies in its rugged and raw coastline that’s only accessible via a small boat. It’s an idyllic place to spend a few days disconnected from the outside world and reconnecting with nature. Picturesque sunsets from the jetty. Ice cold beers on the beach and fresh seafood feasts from local restaurants. Nothing says holiday mode more than Chacahua.

With no mobile phone signal and weak Wi-Fi, Chacahua is not the place to visit if you need to get work done. Instead, if it’s laid-back vibes you’re after, it doesn’t get better than this.

Valladolid

If you’re planning a trip to Mexico, put Valladolid on your must-visit list. Located in Yucatan, between Merida and Tulum, this picturesque town offers an authentic Mexican feel, which you won’t find in other touristy places like Cancun or Tulum.

The colonial architecture that lines the streets of Valladolid is breathtakingly charming. It is a great base for visitors to explore the nearby Chichen Itza and the nearby cenotes, such as the Instagram-famous Cenote Suytun or super fun Cenote Oxman. Swimming in one of these unique sinkholes is an absolute must!

Valladolid is also a very safe town. In the evenings, families gather in the lively main square to mingle and enjoy the street foods on offer. Make sure you try marquesitas, which are crispy pancakes that come with various fillings, such as Nutella and fruit or savoury Philadelphia cheese.

For those who want to stay longer, there are many affordable Valladolid hotels and a fantastic food scene, which is a cherry on top for passionate foodies. Don’t miss Burrito Amor and Le Kaat located on Calzada de los Frailes. This picturesque walking street is lined with quirky cafes and boutiques.

Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres is a corner of paradise in the heart of Mexico’s Caribbean coast and my favourite place in Mexico! The island is just 13 kilometres off the northeast coast of the Yucatán peninsula. Accessible by a short ferry ride from Cancún, this island gem offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of the mainland.

Indeed, Isla Mujeres holds a special place in my heart. It harmoniously combines natural beauty, cultural richness and a laid-back atmosphere. Its superb white-sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters and vibrant marine life make it a paradise for snorkelers and beach-goers. Its picturesque streets boast colourful houses, local markets and numerous restaurants serving authentic Mexican cuisine.

In addition, if you’re considering relocating to Mexico, Isla Mujeres offers a unique blend of relaxed lifestyle and employment opportunities in the tourism industry. The island’s charm, safety and friendly community make it an attractive destination for expats. Bacalar

Pueblo Magico in the Yucatan Peninsula

If heading to the Maldives of Mexico sounds like it would be up your alley, head to Bacalar. Bacalar is a pueblo magico in the Yucatan Peninsula. Located about two and a half hours south of Tulum or less than 40 minutes north of Belize. This town is known for its stunningly colored Lagoon of Seven Colors. It’s Mexico’s largest body of freshwater that happens to be brilliant shades of turquoise, azure, and dark blue, thanks to its sandy white floor.

There’s plenty of things to do in Bacalar. From paddle boarding across its gorgeous waters or kayaking to Canal de los Piratas, a secret hiding spot in the lagoon for pirates centuries ago. For something even more unique, head to Los Rapidos. This narrow section of the lagoon has a gentle current that you can simply float down as a lazy river!

After a day of enjoying the lagoon, head to the charming cobblestone streets of its downtown area. Here you’ll find delicious local food and a cerveza or two to fuel up before you go enjoy the relaxing waters again tomorrow!

Isla Holbox

Isla Holbox is situated on Mexico’s Northern Coastline. It has earned a reputation for exuding a tranquil and relaxed atmosphere. Also as a unique landscape that is ideally suited for exploration through outdoor activities like rappelling, swimming in cenotes, boat tours, and much more.

Unlike other regions in the Yucatan Peninsula, this island prohibits cars (only work vehicles allowed). This makes it unique and thus creates a small-town charm where people meet in the pueblo to gather together for meals and socialization.

Holbox is a great destination to visit as there are a variety of boat excursions available. All offering incredible chances to witness wildlife, including magnificent creatures like whale sharks. Adventures will enjoy the beautiful landscapes. Yalahau cenote inviting guests to swim in the crystal-clear turquoise waters beneath the surface.

If you’re looking for a more relaxing experience, stroll along the seemingly endless sandbar beach at Las Nubes. Extending for miles from the beach hotels all the way to Mosquito Point. The best time to visit is in the morning during low tide. Make sure to align your sandbar adventures with the tides.

Isla Holbox is unique from the rest of tourist Mexico as it offers a unique atmosphere. It allows you to interact with the locals, taste authentic Mexican cuisine, and experience all the hidden gems in their raw state as they haven’t been popularized by tourism.

We enjoy Isla Holbox for its tranquil atmosphere, making it a perfect getaway for families with young children. Unlike the usual bustling Mexican destinations, Isla Holbox is less crowded, allowing for a peaceful experience.

Chichén Itzá

When visiting the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico a must see is one of the ‘New 7 Wonders of the World’ – Chichén Itzá. Literally every year millions of people visit this Unesco World Heritage Site to discover this Mayan historical site. 

Chichén Itzá was the urban centre of the Maya from about AD750 to 1200. And many of the buildings are well preserved at this archaeological site. Spread over some 740 acres you discover how the May lived through buildings such as El Castillo Pyramid which dominates the area standing at 98 foot (29 metres) tall.  Each side of the pyramid has a staircase which represents the four points of a compass. Since 2008 you cannot climb the structure. As I did visit before then I was able to climb the 365 steps, yes, one for each day of the year. And believe me, the steps are very steep and it is scary coming down. Many people came down slowly on their bottoms.

There are other structures to see such as the Temple of the Warriors, The Maya Ball Court and ensure you include a visit to the Sacred Cenote where numerous human skeletons have been found at the bottom of the cenote and believed to have been sacrificed to the gods. Definitely include a trip to Chichén Itzá if in the Yucutan in Mexico.

When is the Best Time to Visit Mexico?

There are a number of variables that can influence when to visit Mexico. They include visiting during the best weather, how long you have for your Mexican holiday and what things you want to do in Mexico. Firstly the weather.

Mexico is a large country different weather happening at different times. They say the best time to visit Mexico is during the dry season which is between December and April. This is when the weather is hot and dry. Then the wet season in the southern part of the country is between May until October. So if you only have a couple of weeks to spend in Mexico, you may want to visit when the weather is warm and dry.

When to visit Mexico can also depend on what you want to do? If you plan to spend all your time lazing on a beach, then a holiday to Mexico will be best when the weather is predicted to be nice and warm. But if you are going to move abroad to live and work in Mexico, you will encounter all the seasons – and that is part of enjoying the country you decide to live in!

Exploring the countryside during one day in Aruba

Aruba is a small island in the Caribbean. So you expect it to have sunny days, beautiful crystal clear water lapping beaches with white sands, fresh seafood to enjoy and a vibrant capital city with great shopping and nightlife. And that is exactly what I got when I spent one day in Aruba. I was on a cruise, sailing from Southampton, England to Sydney, Australia and one of the stops was in Aruba. Only having the one day I ensured I booked onto the tour that enabled me to experience the best things what to do see and the best things what to do in Aruba. Here is how I spent my 1 day in Aruba from cruise ship Belorussia.

When is the Best Time to Visit Aruba?

If you are wondering the best months to visit Aruba, I have heard Aruba has great year-round weather. This means if you want to spend your days on the beach and nights fine dining, then anytime is a good time to visit Aruba. However, the island has some season events and celebrations that you may choose to attend. If you are travelling on a budget the best times to visit Aruba is during the low season of May to November when flights and accommodation are cheapest. However, beware of the hurricane season June to November though I’m told, Aruba is rarely affected by storms due to its location. I had no choice of when to visit Aruba. My cruise ship was sailing through the Caribbean in late November. And I was treated to perfect weather. Not to hot, nor cold.

About Aruba – Where is Aruba?

Aruba is found in the southern Caribbean Sea, just north off the coast of Venezuela, which, by the way, you can sometimes see on a clear day. Aruba is divided into different districts: The capital Oranjestad, Noord, Paradero, Savaneta, Santa Cruz, Pos Chiquita and San Nicolas. I was able to visit all the areas as Aruba in a day, well actually about 8 hours because the island is 21 miles (33km) long and 6 miles (9km) wide and easy to travel around. 

One Day in Aruba Itinerary

My one day in Aruba itinerary included all the best bits of Aruba and I organised it onboard my cruise ship. After disembarking from the ship, our bus was waiting for us on the dock to whisk us away. Things we saw on my Aruba itinerary included:

Natural Bridge

When it was standing before it collapsed in 2005, the original Natural Bridge stood 23 feet high and 100 feet long amongst the stunning ocean cliffs. I was lucky enough to see it when I visited Aruba for one day, it hadn’t collapsed but we were warned while there, to be careful, because it was suspected it might collapse one day. But don’t worry, you can still appreciate this area on Aruba and visit the Baby Bridge which is about 25 feet long and stands 3 feet above sea level.

Aruba Aloe Factory, Museum and Store

What is Aruba known for? I discovered on my tour around the island of Aruba that it is one of, if not the world’s largest exporter of aloe. Wow! The 15-minute tour of the Aruba Aloe Factory is free and provides a great opportunity to learn about the history of aloe cultivation on Aruba, as well as discovering its present-day production. Next, hit the souvenir and gift store for plenty of aloe products. I stocked up on a few aloe creams as aloe can help cool and soothe the skin if sunburnt. And being on a cruise I had been in the sun.

Discover the Beaches of Aruba

If you are wondering what to do in Aruba, one of the best ways to spend time in Aruba is at one of the beaches. I only had time to dip my toes in the Caribbean Sea while on my day trip around Aruba. We visited a number of the beaches including Eagle Beach popular for its blue coloured water with long stretch of white sand punctuated with trademark wind-bent trees. Apart from spending a lazy day on Eagle Beach there are plenty of water sports to enjoy from jet skis, banana boats and parasailing.

If you have time during this one day in Aruba, you could visit other beaches such as Palm Beach or Surfside Beach. You could visit the privately owned Renaissance Island owned by Renaissance Aruba Resort Hotel for a day Aruba trip and spend your time on Flamingo Beach to spot some of the beautiful pink flamingos. I believe it is quite expensive to do this and you need to reserve a spot for about $125.

Arikok National Park

Arikok National Park comprises almost 20% of the island of Aruba. Apart from the Baby Bridge you will see touring Aruba you will enjoy gorgeous vistas of rugged terrain. This terrain is desert-like hills filled with tall cacti, Divi Divi and Fofoti trees – not what I was expecting being on a Caribbean island! But magnificent all the same.

Explore Oranjestad

My day trip around Aruba ended back at the ship dock. To which, a number of us walked the 1km into the capital city of Oranjestad. We visited Fort Zoutman, Aruba Historical Museum which is the oldest building in Oranjestad and had plenty of information on the history of Aruba. Adjacent to the fort is Willem III Tower. Great views can be had from the top of the tower. There is an entrance fee of about $5 to do this. We then walked some of the streets and looked at the colourful, and no so colourful buildings of the town. We also jumped onto Aruba’s streetcar system that took us through downtown Aruba and back to the cruise terminal.

Shop Till You Drop

After discovering the history of Aruba it was time to shop till we dropped. Oranjestad is the shopping Mecca on Aruba where you will find four main shopping zones. Main Street with its luxury retail stores and boutiques. Royal Plaza that has three levels of shops and dining. Renaissance Mall with over 60 fine retail luxury shops and Renaissance Marketplace that has an array of shops, dining and live entertainment. I also discovered the Wharfside Flea Market on my return to my ship and scored some bargain souvenirs which I had to haggle for. There were t-shirts, hats, crafts, local arts and some traditional souvenirs like tea towels.

Is One Day on Aruba enough?

How many days in Aruba is enough? One day on Aruba is enough to see the highlights of Aruba that I have mentioned above. However, if you want to spend time at one of the many beaches and truly get to know Aruba, I would think a week in Aruba would be wonderful. Then you can have a base and do Aruba day trips.

How to Spend Your Time in Aruba for One Week

If I had a week to spend in Aruba, there are still plenty more things you could see and do. Including visiting the Bushiribana Gold Mines, the Quadirikiri and Fontein Caves and the Avo Rock Formations. And of course, spend plenty of time enjoying beach pursuits – relaxing, stand up paddle boarding, paragliding, swimming and snorkelling.

How to Get Around Aruba

As you know, I was on a cruise tour of the island of Aruba but it is easy to get around on public transport. You can go around the island on the local public buses, grab a taxi or rent a car. Because of the size of Aruba you can drive from one end to the other in about 45 minutes. And don’t forget the Streetcar.

Discover El Castillo in this ultimate guide to visiting Chichén Itzá

Visiting Chichén Itzá is one of the best things to do when visiting the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. Why? Because you will discover one of the ‘New 7 Wonders of the World’, that’s why. Every year, literally millions of tourists visit this Unesco World Heritage Site. And believe me, it is worth the visit.

In this post I will run you through what Chichén Itzá is, where it is in Mexico and, how to visit it on a day trip and what the best things to see at this interesting historical Mayan site are. So here’s my ultimate guide to visiting Chichén Itzá for first timers. 

What is Chichén Itzá?

Chichén Itzá was a Mayan city on the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. It was an urban centre of the Maya from about AD750 to 1200. Today, Chichén Itzá is an archaeological site that you can visit to discover the world of the Mayans. The site is over 1,000 years old and houses extensive Mayan ruins over the 740 acres it encompasses. You will discover how the Maya lived through the structures they built and which stand at Chichén Itzá today.

Where is Chichén Itzá?

Chichén Itzá is located on the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. The nearest city is Valladolid. Many people who visit come on a day trip from one of the many holiday spots in the Yucatán, like Cancun. My day trip to Chichén Itzá was a day trip from Cancun, and it took about 2 hours in the bus to reach. It was an interesting drive through this part of Mexico. It was very flat, bushy with small villages.

Chichén Itzá is dominated by The Temple of the Kulkulkán (el Castillo Pyramid). Well you cannot miss it as it is 98 foot (29 metres) tall. Kulkulkan is a feathered snake deity in the Mayan religion and this pyramid is guarded by enormous carved serpent heads around the base of the stairs. Each side of the pyramid has a stairway which represents the four points of a compass. 

Since 2008 you cannot climb the structure. I was able to since I first visited Chichén Itzá before 2008. It is extremely steep, having 365 steps, one for each day in the solar calendar, and I was warned that the steps are small and many people get scared, particularly on the way down. This was true, and like many others, I can down slowly on my bottom! But the view from the top was worth it.

The Temple of the Warriors is another impressive stone structure at Chichén Itzá. This structure is 40 feet (12 metres) high and 133 feet (40.5 metres) wide. It is believed it was built for really large gatherings and is also known as the Hall of the Thousand Columns. The temple has four platforms, flanked on the south and west sides by 200 round and square columns, which are believed to have held up the roof at one time. The square columns are carved with Toltec warriors. On its top are serpent columns and plenty of decorative features related to Maya religious ceremonies. Very impressive.

The Maya Ball Court at Chichén Itzá is the largest ball court at any Mayan sit-in the world. Here, at the ball court, my guide explained the game. There were two teams. They needed to put the ball into a small stone circle perched high on a wall. Whoever won the game, received the honour of being decapitated and sacrificed to the gods in the sacred cenote! I’m not sure I would have liked to play this game! Apparently this ball game is over 3,500 years old, making it the first ever organised game in the history of sporting games.

What is a cenote you ask? Well a cenote is a sinkhole that form natural pools. There are many of them throughout the Yucatán in Mexico. Cenotes have deep spiritual significance to the Maya, as does this one in Chichén Itzá. The Sacred Cenote or Cenote de los Sacrificios measure roughly 200 feet (61 metres) across with sheer cliffs that drop to the water’s surface. To ensure the cenote stayed full of water, sacrificers were made to appease the rain god Chac. Numerous human skeletons have been found at the bottom of the cenote and it is believed they were sacrificed to the gods. Because this cenote is sacred, you cannot swim in this cenote. Fair enough – I thought the water didn’t look overly inviting due to its browny-green colour!

The above structures I have mention will take you around 2-3 hours to discover. There are more to discover including Tzompantli meaning ‘wall of skulls’. This large platform supported states on which decapitated human heads were impaled on top of each other. You can also visit the House of the Eagles and El Caracol where you will see more carvings. Take another couple of hours to explore these other structures.

Logistics to Visiting Chichén Itzá for your First time

To help you plan your visit to Chichén Itzá here are the practicalities to consider. Planning your visit to Chichén Itzá in advance will help you make the most of your day to allow you to enjoy this historical Mayan site on the Yucatan Peninsula.

Chichén Itzá Opening Hours

Chichén Itzá is open every day from 8am to 5pm. Last entry is at 4pm. It will take you a couple of hours at least to explore, so I wouldn’t get there any later than 2pm, though some do.

Best Time to Visit Chichén Itzá

The best time to visit the Yucatán Peninsula in general is from mid-November to April. This is when the weather is warm and rainfall rare. The best time to visit Chichén Itzá is in the morning after the gates open or around 3pm after people have left for the day (though you will have to run around to see everything as it closes 5pm). These times are when you can avoid the heat of the middle of the day and the crowds are less. But you can visit Chichén Itzá any time however, I would avoid Sundays when admission is free for Mexican citizens 

How to Visit Chichén Itzá

Visiting Chichén Itzá can be done in a number of ways. There is the ADO Bus, renting a car, on a tour and the newest option, the train. All options are great but you will need to decide which option suits your budget and the time you have to spend there.

Visit Chichén Itzá by ADO Bus

You can take the local ADO buses, with a little pre-planning. These run several times a day connecting most cities such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum to Chichén Itzá. Check out ADO buses for details or Busbud to buy a ticket. From Valladolid, there’s bus service every 30 minutes for about $26 MXN and it takes about 45 minutes.

Visit Chichén Itzá by Renting a Car and Driving Yourself

If renting a car to drive yourself to Chichén Itzá, there are plenty of car rental companies to rent a car. I suggest you check out DiscoverCars first for pricing and availability.

If driving yourself from Cancun, take 180D highway that connects you to Chichén Itzá. It is a toll road so bring enough Mexican pesos to cover it as USD or credit cards are not accepted.

Visit Chichén Itzá by taking the Train

There is a new train system being built in Mexico. The first section of Tren Maya railway’s section opened February 2024 connecting the Yucatan Peninsula with ancient sites including Chichén Itzá with the popular beaches and resorts of Cancun in a just a few hours. Great news, as there is now another option for visiting the Mayan ruins of Chichén Itzá. At this time, there are no packages of train ticket and entrance ticket to Chichén Itzá so you will need to buy these separately. Check out details of the Mayan train routes at Tren Maya.

Cost to Enter Chichén Itzá if coming by ADO Bus, driving yourself by or train

The entrance fee to Chichén Itzá is 242 MXN ($11 USD).

Parking at Chichén Itzá costs 30 MXN ($1.50 USD)

Make sure you bring Mexican pesos with you as USD and credit cards are not accepted everywhere. And if they do, there is mostly a 10% surcharge.

Visit Chichén Itzá on an Organised Day Tour

Personally I think going on a tour is the best way to visit Chichén Itzá, particularly if staying in one of the holiday resorts. My hotel in Cancun that I stayed at, the Fiesta Americana had a tour office where I booked onto my tour. The tour included hotel pick up, air conditioned bus transfer, the entrance fee, a guided tour of the notable buildings and cenote. Plus a buffet lunch was included. I found the Yucatán had some of the best Mexican dishes around.

What to Pack for A Visit to Chichén Itzá?

• Wear comfortable clothing suited to the weather. More than likely it will be hot so shorts and a t-shirt will suffice. It will take anywhere from 2-5 hours to explore all the archaeological sites, depending on how into it you are, so be comfortable in your clothes and shoes.
• Wear good walking shoes and you will be doing a lot of walking around the site.
• Put on sunscreen and wear a hat.
• Bring plenty of drinking water and snacks as food and drink is expensive to buy – unless your lunch is included on the tour!
• Take a camera or use your phone to get fabulous shots. No drones allowed.
• Pack your swimmers and a towel if you plan to visit a nearby cenote such as Cenote Lk Kil. Note: you cannot swim at the cenote at Chichén Itzá as it is sacred.
• Bring Mexican pesos to cover costs as USD and credit cards are not always taken.

My Tips for Visiting Chichén Itzá

• Arrive early, or late to miss the crowds.
• Buy skip-the-line-tickets or go on a tour.
• Rent a guide at the entrance. They are full of knowledge and can tell you wonderful stories about the Maya and the ruins.
• Avoid Sundays as Mexican citizens can visit for free – and many of them take up the offer!

When I think of the Caribbean I think of crystal clear waters, spicy foods and tropical fruits, cricket, pirates and beautiful beaches. Yep, those beautiful beaches stick in my mind the most because I have visited many and plan to visit more in the future. Where is the Caribbean?

This means there is a lot of choice of which island or islands to visit. The best ways to visit the islands are to sail on a cruise ship or a yacht or fly directly to an island, then catch a ferry if need be.

A beach is a beach right? Not always. Having grown up near the beach in Australia what makes a good beach is what you like to do at the beach. If you are a surfer, you want good waves. Maybe as a swimmer you like to swim and want flatter water. If you are there with little kids you will want nice clean golden sand for them to play with near the waters edge. But what makes a great beach? In general it is clean golden sand, clear water with perfect waves, not dumpers and no stinging things like blue bottles. Add some shady trees and an ice cream shop nearby! Many Caribbean beaches are known for all this. And here are 13 of the best of them to consider for your next Caribbean beach holiday.

Crash Boat Beach, Puerto Rico

Found along the far northwestern coast of the island of Puerto Rico, Crash Boat Beach is easily one of the best beaches in the Caribbean! Often recognized for its long dock that is great for jumping and crystal clear turquoise waters, this is one beach that any sun-seeker should have on their bucket list. At just a quick 12-minute drive from the Aguadilla airport, your vacation can begin as soon as you arrive.

Located in the popular tourist town of Aguadilla, visitors can enjoy incredible water sports such as snorkeling, swimming, surfing, windsurfing, scuba diving, fishing, and more! We suggest picking up some local produce and a coconut drink from one of the local stands in town before making your way to the beach. There are also plenty of food stalls nearby once you arrive for lunch if you would prefer!

Crash Boat Beach is also one of the best spots on the northwest of the island to catch a great sunset, so we recommend coming back around dusk to walk the beach or lay on a blanket to watch the sun go down.

Popular for its extremely clean presence and endless activities, you can relax on Crash Boat Beach regardless of the time of year. But, we do recommend learning some basic Spanish phrases before you arrive since many of the locals speak limited English.

Flamenco Beach, Culebra Island

One of the best Caribbean beaches is Flamenco Beach, a beautiful beach on Culebra Island. This small island is located just off the eastern coast of the main island in Puerto Rico.

Flamenco Beach has been named one of the best beaches in the world because of the powdery white sand, calm turquoise waters, and beautiful views. It is a small island that is only accessible via plane or ferry so the crowds are usually pretty limited. This is especially true if you stay overnight on the island and spend time at the beach outside of the ferry operating hours.

The water is shallow here and is protected by a cove, making it a great place for snorkeling and less-experienced swimmers. There are also some really cool abandoned military tanks on the beach that are fun to see. It also has lots of great amenities at the beach including restrooms, food kiosks, beach gear rentals, freshwater tanks and outdoor showers.

Maho Beach, St. Maarten

Maho Beach in St. Maarten is one of the most famous beaches in the world. The small stretch of white sand borders the airport on the Dutch side of the dual-nation island. So, every day tourists gather on the beach to watch planes land and take off from Princess Juliana International Airport. 

Hanging out at the beach, planespotting, and feeling the gusts from the massive commercial jets flying low as they arrive and depart from the airport is one of the best things to do in St. Maarten and a bucket list item for many aviation-lovers.

Kokomo Beach, Curacao

Kokomo Beach is easily one of the most beautiful beaches in Curacao. Plus, with no entrance fee nor parking pass required to enjoy Kokomo Beach, you can expect a low-key, laidback atmosphere in an intimate setting. This Caribbean gem also boasts soft golden sand and is perfect for everyone from couples, to solo travelers, to families.

An Instagrammer’s dream, one of Kokomo’s main draws is a seaside swing perched over the crystal-blue water. Given the swing’s popularity, you may need to wait your turn before snapping that Instagram-worthy photo, depending on when you arrive. Mornings tend to be the quietest time. Beyond the iconic swing, Kokomo Beach also attracts a number of pelicans, a definite perk for bird lovers and nature enthusiasts.

Coral Bay Beach, Barbuda

The sister island to Antigua, Barbuda is an underrated Caribbean gem. One of my favorites of all the 365 beaches in this English-speaking tropical nation is Barbuda’s Coral Bay Beach.

At Coral Bay Beach, white sand spreads for miles on the edge of turquoise water, where dolphins, turtles, and rays swim in the Caribbean Sea. As an avid snorkeler, I spent hours exploring the waters, photographing schools of fish and chasing turtles.

Located 25 nautical miles north of Antigua, the beauty of Barbuda’s remoteness means it’s a lot less crowded. We shared the spacious beach with only a few other sailors who anchored in the gin-clear waters.

What makes Coral Bay Beach ideal is its mix of tranquility and convenience. It’s also home to an excellent restaurant. Uncle Roddy’s Beach Bar is a Barbuda institution serving tropical cocktails and fresh lobster, among other local favorites, overlooking that gorgeous Caribbean sea.

Coral Bay Beach, Barbuda’s pristine white sand, great snorkeling, and full-service beach bar make it one of the Caribbean’s best beaches.

Grace Bay Beach, Turks & Caicos

Grace Bay Beach in Turks & Caicos has been crowned as one of the best beaches in the world. It most notably won this honour in TripAdvisor’s 2022 list of the best beaches in the world! It’s not hard to see why either.

Grace Bay Beach is 3 miles of pure beauty. It features incredible blue waters that look as though they were photoshopped, pristine white sand, and no seaweed. Most of the top Turks and Caicos resorts are located on Grace Bay Beach, including the award-winning and family-friendly, Beaches Turks and Caicos.

  Whether you’re interested in adrenaline-fuelled activities, like parasailing and jet skiing, or would rather simply relax on some soft sand, you can find it all on Grace Bay Beach. Shell Beach, St. Barts

One of my favorite beaches in the Caribbean is tiny Shell Beach, located on the French-speaking Caribbean island of St. Barthélemy, or St. Barts.  Shell Beach is just a short walk from the capital city of Gustavia. Making it the easiest beach to access for visitors arriving to St. Barts via the main harbor.

I love the dramatic views of Shell Beach. It is nestled in a cove with steep tree-covered hills reaching up out of the pristine blue Caribbean waters. Millions of shells have washed up here and make up the majority of the beach – hence the name. The beach transitions from shell to sand as you walk towards its southern end.

Spend the day swimming and snorkeling in the pristine blue waters of the cove. Or just relax on the beach and watch the sailboats lazily moving across the horizon.  Enjoy a shaded lounge chair and a meal or cocktail at the Shellona restaurant right on the beach.  Watching the sunset from Shell Beach is an incredible experience and is the perfect way to end your beach day!

Maundays Bay, Anguilla

Maundays Bay in Anguilla is thought to be one of the Caribbean’s best beaches due to its perfect powdery white sand and stunning swimmable waters. It is Maundays Bay’s exclusivity that also makes it so special.

The crescent-shaped beach is situated in front of the luxurious Belmond Cap Juluca Hotel. However, anyone can visit the beach since all beaches in Anguilla are public.

If you have the budget for it, I recommend a stay at Belmond Cap Juluca to get the most out of Maundays Bay. It is the perfect oasis and offers the ultimate convenience to wake up and be footsteps from a magical beach setting.

There is an abundance of water sports offered on Maundays Bay, such as snorkelling, kayaking, and sailing. Although, I will point out that there are no public bathrooms on this beach. Therefore, you may want to eat lunch at Uchu, one of the hotel’s onsite sit-down restaurants, to use the facilities.

You can reach Anguilla by flying to Saint-Martin and taking a 25-minute ferry across the island. There is free public parking at Belmond Cap Juluca. Ask the guards at the entrance to Cap Juluca for directions to the public parking lot.

Seven Mile Beach, Grand Cayman Island

If you’re looking for the best Caribbean beach, look no further than Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman Island. With its white-sand beaches and crystal-clear water, it’s easy to see why this is a popular tourist destination.

Seven Mile Beach is located on the western shores of Grand Cayman and is recognized as one of the best beaches in the Caribbean. There are boutique hotels, resorts, and many other fabulous places to stay within steps of the water. The famous beach stretches for miles. Along with soaking up the sun, there is snorkeling, fishing, and other water sports activities to enjoy.

We visited during December before the holidays during the shoulder season, and there were minimal crowds. We stayed at a condo steps from the beach. The water is crystal clear in Grand Cayman, and the sand is white and soft. It was the perfect place to relax and soak up some sun. We had so much fun taking a boat tour to Stingray City and Starfish Point to enjoy the local wildlife.

If you’re looking for someplace tropical to enjoy your holidays, definitely add Grand Cayman Island to your list!

Buck Island St. Croix

One of the prettiest beaches in the Caribbean can be found off of St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands. St. Croix is located a little further south than the other US Virgin Islands. This means it gets less visitors even though it’s the largest island. But it has one of the most beautiful beaches: Turtle Beach on Buck Island.

Taking a day trip to Buck Island is one of the top things to do in St. Croix and was definitely a favorite part of our trip. The boat ride is about 40 minutes to the island from Christiansted and arrives at one of the most pristine beaches.

Turtle Beach has white sand and beautiful turquoise water that circles the island and separates with the darker hues of the ocean. The calm water makes it a great swimming beach and because there are only a handful of boat tours, the beach remains fairly empty. You can also snorkel the underwater trail on the back side of the island!

Divi Beach, Aruba

If you’re looking for the best Caribbean Beaches, then you absolutely must see Divi Beach in Aruba! Home to gorgeous white sand that feels like powder and stunning turquoise water, what else could you ask for in a beach?

Aruba is a fabulous destination for anyone looking for a great beach. Between the all-inclusive resorts, affordable vacation rentals and incredible amount of things to do in Aruba, you really can’t go wrong. 

The most popular beach in Aruba is Palm Beach. It’s centrally located to hotels and resorts, shopping and a lot of dining options. It’s gorgeous! But further down the road is Divi Beach, which is even more beautiful – and less crowded! Rent a palapa and make a day of it!

Be sure to bring ocean-safe sunscreen while visiting the beach, to protect our earth’s reefs and marine life. You could also bring a cooler with your own drinks, or a volleyball to play at the sand volleyball court located right on Divi beach.

To round out your perfect Aruba vacation, visit the California Lighthouse, rent UTVs and explore the undeveloped side of the island or go swimming in one of Aruba’s natural pools.

Spratt Bight, San Andres

The island of San Andres is as tropical and beautiful as you can get in the Caribbean. Whilst part of Colombia, the island is located some 300 miles offshore from the mainland, and has a more Caribbean feel to it rather than South American. The beach of Spratt Bight is the best of the bunch on the island. Located in the north east corner of the island, its fine white sands make it a popular place to lounge around on. The waters are truly magnificent, with as many as five different shades of blue that stretch into the seemingly endless horizon. Whilst it can get quite busy and popular in the afternoon, the advantage here is that there is an abundance of restaurants and bars lining the beach. The best time to head to Spratt Bight would be in the morning, as there are less people. San Andres is a great place to come for both peace and wild times. When it comes to beaches, you’ll find numerous scattered all over the island however, Spratt Bight is our winner. You’ll have a good time here regardless of when you decide to visit.

Doctor’s Cave Beach is one of the best beaches to visit in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Located on the infamous Hip Strip it is one of the most pristine beaches in the area. It’s maintained and boasts some of the most sought after crisp and clear blue waters in the Caribbean. Imagine a place where you can lay on the softest sand, explore beautiful shells and spot aquatic life. At Doctor’s Cave beach you can spot stingrays as well as corals and a host of other pretty and colorful fish. It is one of the safest beaches in Jamaica as there are lifeguards and security staff on-site, as well as changing facilities. All this does occur a $6 USD entry fee. But you pay for peace of mind when on this beach and can relax without a care in the world. There is also a restaurant and bar service, so you can order nibbles and drinks from your beach chair if you wish. Visit during the morning hours for a more peaceful setting.

Who wouldn’t love to be working from their computer while on the beach? Or sitting in a bar or cafe with a beach view? I can say, I would love to be. Is this realistic you ask? Well it could be.

Whether you are a digital nomad looking for your next location or are a remote online-worker able to work online from home, you might want to consider your next work environment. Is that working from an island offering great climate where you could be swimming in the ocean and walking along golden sands every day? Then enjoying good food and warm nights. Well, I have done a bit of research and have discovered there are 8 Caribbean islands remote work visa programs. Without further ado, if you are looking to move abroad to live and work abroad somewhere, why not live, work and play in the Caribbean.

What is a Remote Work Visa?

Firstly, what exactly is a remote work visa? You probably know if you are looking for this type of visa, but let me explain anyway. A remote work visa, sometimes referred to as a digital nomad visa or temporary resident visa allows a person the opportunity to live and work in a foreign country for an extended period. The work of course, must be online and mostly for a company outside of the country issuing the visa or for yourself.

Good news is there is no age limit on the visa like there is with a working holiday visa. Some of the visas are happy to have family digital nomads apply. But when applying for the visa you do need to prove you are making an income from online work to receive the visa.

Caribbean Digital Nomad or Remote Work Visa Programs

Most Caribbean destinations have long since allowed the majority of their visitors to stay for 30 to 90 days without a visa. Some like Jamaica allow for an extension of stay while on the island. After the pandemic (which is far behind us now), to help kick start economies severely impacted by the virus many countries, the Caribbean countries included introduced a digital nomad and or remote work visa.

The aim of the visa is to attract people who will stay for up to 12 months and spend their hard earned online cash to inject into their economy. This is because you will need somewhere to live, require utilities and spend your money on food and going out. All you need to do is prove you can support yourself during your stay and not be a burden on any country’s systems such as the health system.

Are You Ready to Be a Digital Nomad in the Caribbean?

If you need a little motivation, just think of enjoying a beer or two at the beach at the end of your day. Central and South America has a number of working holiday visas available that allow those people who qualify for one, to stay for up to 12 months to live and work abroad. What if I’m not a Citizen from one of those countries and still want to have a working holiday in Central or South America?

Some options:

If you don’t qualify for a working holiday visa, what many people do is go on a holiday visa which allows a stay of up to 90 days, then they do a visa run. This is where they leave one country, go to another and then return and receive another 90 days stay. 

If you are an American citizen, there is an agreement with Mexico that allows you to live and work there for up to 6 months.

The Pacific Alliance was established on 28 April 2011. It comprises of Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru that allows citizens of these countries to live and work in each others countries.

Types of Work You Can Get on a Working Holiday in Central and South America

Work is limited mostly due to language barriers. Many working holiday makers get work in bars, in hostels, and Teaching English. There are also opportunities to work and ski in a Chile ski resort.

Brazil is a favoured country destination for visitors to South America. There’s Christ the Redeemer to visit, Sugarloaf Mountain, sunbathing on Inpanema Beach, attending a soccer match, exploring the Amazon Jungle and dancing in the streets at the Rio Carnival. And now, you are considering moving abroad to live and work in Brazil on an extended Brazil holiday on a Brazil working holiday visa. In this post I will explain how to make a working holiday in Brazil (‘visto de trabalho e ferias’ in Portuguese) possible.

Brazil Visas

Like other countries there are a variety of visas for people to visit Brazil. They include, but are not limited to:

• Visitor Visa for Brazil holiday stays of up to 90 days.
• Student Visa which allows a few hours work per week to help support yourself while you study.
• Work Permit – if you are lucky enough to find a sponsored job such as Teaching English in an English Language School.
• Working Holiday Visa which is officially known as the VITEM VI and is a Temporary Work Holiday Visa. And this post is about this visa.

What is a Working Holiday Visa?

In short, a working holiday visa allows the holder to live in another country primarily to holiday, but also allows the holder to get work to make money to support themselves. And Brazil has a reciprocal working holiday visa with France, Germany, South Korea, New Zealand and Australia. This visa allows citizens from these countries who are 18-30 years of age inclusive a stay in Brazil of up to 12 months. During this time participants can undertake work to help fund their travels.

How to Get a Brazil Working Holiday Visa

To get a Brazil Working Holiday Visa you firstly must meet the criteria which is:

• being aged between 18-30 years old (inclusive) at the time of application.
• hold an onward travel ticket from Brazil or sufficient funds to purchase a return ticket.
• have enough savings to support yourself initially during your stay in Brazil (about AUD5,000).
• hold comprehensive travel/health insurance.
• be in good health

You cannot apply for this visa if you:

• will be accompanied by dependent children.
• have already participated in a working holiday program in Brazil.
• Have criminal convictions.

The Application Process

When applying for a Brazil working holiday visa visit the website of your nearest Brazilian Consulate and fill out the online visa application form. Follow the instructions of what documents are needed such as bank statement to prove you have enough money, copy of birth certificate, photos, etc. And then apply. A visa fee applies so check this amount when applying for the visa.

It can take a few weeks for your application to be processed. If successful, the visa will be valid for 12 months from the date the embassy issues your visa. And this may not be the date of your arrival, you should plan to arrive as close to the issue date as possible to ensure you get to enjoy a full year (or close to) in Brazil as possible. With the visa issued you can being living and working in Brazil.

Prepare for your working holiday in Brazil

So you got your visa and have a definite ‘leave date’ now you need to prepare yourself for living and working in Brazil.

• Most people arrive by plane so get yourself an airfare first. Check out Skyscanner for deals.
• Next book your accommodation. I suggest you book somewhere for 2 weeks. I say this because after you arrive, recover from jet lag, do some sightseeing and get your bearings, 1 week is usually up. The second week gives you a better chance to sort out things you need to do on arrival like get a tax number, a job and a place to live. • Finalise things at home. Cancel services like gas, electricity, etc.
• Pack. Packing for a working holiday is different to packing for a two week beach holiday so read this first: What to Pack For A Working Holiday
• Don’t forget travel insurance. I can recommend WorldNomads and SafetyWing but if you don’t buy insurance with one of them, ensure you buy travel insurance.

How to get to Brazil?

It will depend on where you are coming from as to how you get to Brazil. Many fly into one of the international airports located in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo or Brasilia. If this is how you will be arriving you will want an airfare. For a great deal on an airfare compare and choose one at Skyscanner.

You could also enter Brazil by coach as there are many coach services from other South American countries that link to and within Brazil. The excellent coach network, particularly its long-distance buses are an economical way to travel.

Things to do when you arrive in Brazil (before you can work)

After your arrival in Brazil you will need to do a couple of things.

• If you are planning to stay over 90 days, which you will be on your Brazil working holiday visa, then you will need to register at your nearest Federal Police (Policia Federal) office for your foreigner’s ID. Formerly known as the RNE card, the RNM (National Migrant Registration) card is the registration of your presence in Brazil with the Federal Police. This document is essential to start other procedures, such as working and opening a bank account in Brazil.
• Next, you need to get a work card, also known as CTPS Estrangeiro (Carteira de Trabalho e Previdencia Social). Get this from the Ministry of Labour by taking your documents, RNM card and a photo.
• purchase a cell phone or Brazilian sim card.

Living in Brazil – Types of accommodation in Brazil

Before you begin the search for a job you might want to find somewhere to live. There are many large cities to choose from but many travellers set up in Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia (the capital) or another major centre. No matter which city or area you choose you will need short-term accommodation arranged for your arrival. I suggest you book short-term accommodation for one week but preferably two. I suggest two as by the time you have arrived, maybe adjusted your body clock to the local time, done some sightseeing and got sorted the things you need to sort when you arrive, the two weeks will probably be up. And you don’t want the added pressure of finding more short-term accommodation when you are trying to find a job, long-term accommodation and doing other things.

If you are happy for your initial stay to be in a hostel then check out HostelWorld as there are many cheap options available. If you want a budget hotel room or small apartment then visit Booking.com. Once you know where you want to be you will need to find longer-term accommodation. Have a look at vivastreet.com.br for temporary and long-term accommodation. Some travellers like to housesit as this provides free accommodation for looking after the house and pets. While others find an apartment or a room in a share house.

Travel Jobs in Brazil

About 80% of Brazilians live in the major Brazilian cities. Therefore, setting yourself up in a city such as Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro or the capital Brasilia may yield the most work opportunities. Unless you speak fluent Portuguese, the local language, the jobs available to you are limited. Here is a rundown on what types of jobs many travellers find in Brazil.

Teach English in Brazil

The most common job for native English speakers is to teach English either giving private lessons or in a school. You don’t necessarily need a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) qualification either though being qualified should see you with a better paying position. In fact, if you don’t qualify for a working holiday visa often Brazilian Language Schools will organise to sponsor you to work. To find an English Teaching job you can contact the schools directly. Work and Ski Brazil

What? Brazil has snow! Travellers have found work in the ski resorts – yes, there are ski resorts. The ski resort of Ski Mountain Park – Sao Roque is the best known. The ski season in Brazil is during the winter months of June, July and August. But it depends on the white stuff how long jobs might be available for. There is also an indoor ski centre located in Gramado, in Brazil’s Serra Gaucha region. Types of ski work available is in hospitality in the bars and cafes and on the slopes. If you’re not fluent in Portuguese, you may be limited to jobs where you don’t have much interaction with holiday makers to the slopes.

Work in the Backpacker Hostel

You might find work in the hostel you are staying in. Jobs can be at reception welcoming and checking in and out guests, housekeeping and/or cleaning or if the hostel has a bar or cafe they might need a bar tender or barista. It will depend on the services the hostel has. Check out the booking engine HostelWorld to see what hostels are around in the area you want to stay and what services they offer. They usually list all the services they provide so you will be able to ascertain potential jobs. Once you have chosen a hostel you would like to work in contact them before you arrive or if you are already there, ask at reception.

Digital Nomad

Digital Nomads, if you don’t already know are basically travellers who make their money on-line. Brazil is a great place to do this. You only need your tech equipment and have access to good wi-fi in a co-working space or in your accommodation and away you go. Digital Nomads undertake different jobs on-line such as bookkeeping, social media management, graphic design, travel blogging (or blogging on other subjects) and doing paid on-line surveys.

Other types of work for travellers in Brazil

You might need to be innovative when it comes to work. People busk, read my blog on Busking and / or Street Performing, make and sell things at markets, become a local English speaking tour guide or becoming a WWOOFer. WWOOF stands for Willing Workers on Organic Farms. It is an exchange program where you exchange working for accommodation, food and an insight in to your hosts way of life in Brazil – a great way to gain a different Brazilian cultural experience on your working holiday in Brazil.

How to find work in Brazil

Work can be found in a variety of ways. Searching the Internet using popular job sites such as Catho www.catho.com.br. Or going down the old fashioned way. Walking in to a place armed with your CV and asking if work is available.
