While the most famous cities in Germany must be Berlin and Hamburg, Munich should not be underestimated when you travel around the country. As the third-biggest city in Germany, the area has a lot to offer. From the Gothic-style old town to the many museums, three days in Munich should give you a taste of this city. In addition to various architectural churches and towers, take a moment to enjoy the local luscious food and drinks, particularly the beer!

To help you make the most of your time on your Munich 3 day itinerary, I have put together the following post of what to see and do in Munich in 3 days. I have been to Munich a few times, once for the Oktoberfest and another time on a tour of Europe and then for a weekend escape. 

Munich is truly a stunning city with an interesting history and lots of beautiful buildings to see and many foods to eat. How will you fit it all in during your 3 days in Munich? In this post I’ve included the best things to do and see in Munich in 3 days in order to maximise your time so you have the best time. And leave Munich having experienced the best Munich has to offer whether it is your first, or even second visit to this wonderful city or whether you are visiting as part of a 1 month Europe itinerary.

Of course, the longer you have to spend in Munich the better to discover all its nooks and crannies. But if three days in Munich is all you have, then so be it. But 3 days in Munich is still plenty of time to see some of the very best things to do in Munich. During the three days in Munich, this itinerary covers many of the best things to see and do plus includes suggestions of where to stay and how to get around Munich to make the most of your time. So no matter if you are visiting Munich as a solo traveller, on a Munich weekend getaway, having a girls or guys long weekend in Munich or visiting on a family holiday to Munich with kids, there is something for everyone on this Munich itinerary.

I have divided this post into two sections. The first section is the best 3 day Munich itinerary. The second part provides details of how to organise your Munich in three days itinerary. So let’s get into what to see in Munich in this three day Munich itinerary so you can tick this German city off your bucket list.

3 Days in Munich Itinerary

Day 1 – Hop On Hop Off Bus + Marienplatz

I always like to start a visit to a new city with a ride on a Hop On Hop Off sightseeing bus. Yeah, I know they are touristy, but they are also great taking you to all the best spots in Munich, have a commentary and allow you to hop on and off at spots you want to discover for longer. For the first time, I would do the whole loop of the bus route, and then decide where to get off.

You can purchase a ticket on the Munich Hop On Hop Off bus on its own or as part of a Munich City Pass. I would get it for 2 days as then you can use it, as in the first 2 days of this itinerary, we visit places that are on the bus route.

Explore the Old Town and Marienplatz

If not taking the Munich Hop on Hop off bus, there’s no better place to start your 3 days in Munich than in the Old Town and Marienplatz. Marienplatz, the beautiful central square is one of the best things to see in Munich Germany. The square has quite a bit of history since Marienplatz and has been Munich’s main square since 1158. Marienplatz is also the main tourist hub, so if you need a place to sit down with your coffee and do some people-watching, this is the spot.

There are some beautiful old buildings to check out in Marienplatz. The Rathaus-Glockenspiel is a large mechanical clock located in Marienplatz Square. Check out the life-size characters of the clock when it chimes, twice daily at 11am and 12pm (and 5pm from March to October). There are 43 bells and 32 figures that perform two historical events lasting about 15 minutes. It is wonderful to watch and one of the things to do in Munich city..

St Peter’s Church

One of the next top things to see in Munich is St Peter’s Church. This is the oldest Catholic church in the city and it is not far from Marientplatz. It is widely known to locals and visitors and is considered one of the main symbols of Munich. St Peter’s Church is made up of styles from different eras. It has a bit of Gothic architecture, a little Rococo style, and also Baroque designs in its interior. 

You also have the option to climb up the tower. I think this a must do in Munich and I highly recommend it, since the view is one of the best you’ll get over the old town. The climb up the 300 feet tower will take you up from 306 steps but is surely worth it. Definitely one of the top things to do in Munich.

Church of Our Lady (Frauenkirche)

Next on day one of this 3 day Munich itinerary is another church. This important landmark in Munich, the Cathedral of Our Lady, lies not far from Marienplatz. The beauty was constructed at the end of the 1400s and is one of the biggest hall churches in the entire world.

The huge building was finished in just 20 years which for that time was close to a miracle. Make sure to check out the Devil’s Step, a place in the cathedral from where no side windows can be seen. A legend goes that the reason behind why the church was finished so fast was because the Devil himself funded the construction. Whether it is true or not, the architecture is worth admiring from inside and out.

Alte Pinakothek Museum

If time, next sop on this list of things to do and see in Munich Germany is the Alte Pinakothek museum. This is one of the oldest art museums in the world. It is packed with paintings from the 14^th to the 18^th century, including Da Vinci and Raphael. It is most likely the most famous museum in the city with a collection of over 700 European artworks.

Hofbräuhaus

Finish your first day of your Munich 3 day visit at the Hofbrauhaus. Why? Well, Germany is famous for its beer and Hofbräuhaus is an excellent beer hall to enjoy the traditional beer of the country. In addition, you can get a filling local dish and an authentic German experience visiting the place. There’s a Bavarian band playing traditional folk songs while you indulge in your quality beverages and sumptuous dishes. In Hofbräuhaus, you can count on a festive end to day 1 of your Munich visit.

Day 2 in Munich

Hop back on the HOHO Munich bus and start your second day of this 3 days Munich itinerary at Olympiapark. I thought it one of the best things to visit in Munich.

Olympiapark

Main stadium – Olympiapark, Munich

The Olympic Park in Munich was originally created for the 1972 Summer Olympic Games. Unfortunately, tragedy struck at these games. Eight Palestinian terrorists from the militant group Black September invaded the Olympic Village and killed two members of the Israeli team. But that didn’t stop the games continuing. After all years, the 85-hectare park is still in active use. You’ll find different festivals and concerts in the area all the time, as well as film screenings and summer events.

It is a popular place to take a walk, have a picnic, or take a boat tour on the lake. In addition, you’ll find a rotating restaurant inside the Olympic Tower, one of the main sightseeings in the area. Don’t forget to visit the observation platform to see a 360-degree view of the park.

BMW Museum

Even if you aren’t into cars, a visit to the BMW Museum is one of the interesting things to see in Munich. In easy walking distance from the Olympiapark, this is the next stop on day 2 of this 3 day visit to Munich. 

The exhibition of over 100s of cars and bikes takes you from BMW beginnings, across the decades to now. Discover their history, design and my favourite part, the motor sport – being a bit of a motor car racing enthusiast!

Englischer Garten

After lots of walking around Munich, there is more walking at the Englischer Garten. The English Garden is the biggest park in Munich and is popular among locals and visitors thus making it one of the tourist things to do in Munich. Interestingly, the massive park is ever bigger than Central Park in New York. The park is a perfect place to visit if you wish to relax. And in the evening grab a beer or two since it has 4 beer gardens within its borders.

The park is not only huge but also very charming. The best way to see the beauty is to hike around and walk along its trails. Take time off and enjoy the breathtaking views of the Englischer Garten. You’ll find surfers catching waves along the bank by the Eisbach river. Or climb the bridge over the river to get an even better view.

Deutsches Museum

The Deutsches Museum, one of the largest of its kind in the world, is a science and technology museum in Munich. And is well worth a visit during your 3 days in Munich. The museum dates back a hundred years and is known for owning a large natural history collection of great importance.

The Deutsches Museum is located on an island in the middle of the river of Isar. It has a lot to offer for both kids and adults, including various interactive displays. So if visiting Munich with kids, put this museum on your list to visit during a Munich three day visit. Get a chance to learn about chemistry, astronomy, and science with your whole family.

Viktualienmarkt

Viktualienmarkt is a popular open-air farmer’s market located near Marienplatz. In addition to local fruits and veggies, you can find snacks and drinks for either breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Viktualienmarkt is a famous meeting spot for people, as it is vibrant and bubbly. From flowers to juice and spices, you can find just about everything there. End day 2 in Munich here, have a look around and have dinner. But you can always have dinner in the English Garden.

Open from 7am to 8pm daily.

Day 3 – Dachau

Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site

For your last day in Munich, head to the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site. It’s located 10 miles northwest of Munch. Dachau can be reached by public transport from Munich Train Station. Take the train S-Bahn (52) which will take about 20 minutes to Dachau. Then there is a 30 minute walk or catch the 726 bus that will take you directly to the gates.

The Dachau concentration camp was established in March 1933 as the first concentration camp established by the National Socialist (Nazi) government to house ‘prisoners’ of the World War II. Throughout its existence some 200,000 prisoners passed through here with some 40,000 being incinerated. 

A visit to Dachau is a very sobering experience. It will take anywhere between 2-3 hours to walk through the museum learning the history of the place. Go on one of the tours and see a recreated area of the living quarters. Stand in the gas chambers and see where those gassed were incinerated. Unfortunately, this is history and I know I came away wondering how such things could have happened. I’m glad I made the visit during my visit to Munich.

Depending on how much time you have left of day 3 of your 3 days in Munich, return to Munich in preparation to leave. If you have some time spend it doing some shopping or enjoying the vibe in Marienplatz.

Organise Your Munich Trip

When to Visit Munich

In my opinion, anytime is a good time to visit Munich as the city always has something going on. Summers in Munich can be very hot with lots of tourists. And winters in Munich can be very cold with lots of snow but this time is also rather magical with the Christmas lights, decorations and the wonderful Christmas markets. Autumn time is also a fun time to head to Munich as it is Munich Oktoberfest time (late September early October). Spring in Munich is also a good time to visit as the city is warming after the cold winter and the summer holiday tourists haven’t arrived yet. Whenever you get the chance to visit Munich, you will make it the perfect time to be in Munich for you.

Where to Stay in Munich

Munich offers many accommodation options but to make the most of your 3 days in Munich, I suggest to stay close to the centre of Munich where you will find many of the tourist attractions that I include in this 3 day itinerary for Munich. On saying that, not all of them are close together. Here are some Munich accommodation options, from budget to ‘let’s splurge on some luxury’. Wherever you decide to stay, you can easily get around Munich by walking, catching local transport or relying on the Hop On Hop Off bus.

For this Munich 3 day itinerary you will need accommodation for two nights. It is presumed you will arrive the morning of day 1 and leave the evening of day 3. If not, book an extra night or two.

Hostels in Munich: There are many hostels in Munich to choose from. The Euro Youth Hostel is one of the closest to Marienplatz at 1.12km making it an easy walking distance to the main hub of Munich. And its only 100m from the main train station so you can easily hop on local transport to access the suburbs to visit BMW Museum and Nymphenburg.

Getting Around Munich

Munich has a very good public transport system for getting around. Get more details about Munich’s transport here. There is the U-Barn – Munich’s underground railway network. Also the S-Barn – Munich’s urban railway system. Plus there are buses and trams. But if you purchased a Hop on Hop off Bus ticket, it will get you around Munich also.

Walking is my favourite way to get around Munich. Keeping my feet on the ground allowed me to discover Munich and its many major sights, side streets and cute cafes. When walking, ensure you wear good and most importantly, flat walking shoes.

Best Time To Visit Manila

When planning your trip to Manila, and wondering when is the best time to visit Manila, well, the best time to visit Manila is during the drier months of January to April for the best weather conditions. During this period, you’ll avoid the heavy rains of the wet season, making it ideal for exploring the city’s rich culture and history. To beat the tropical heat, plan outdoor activities during the cooler early mornings or late afternoons.

However, if you find yourself in Manila during the wet season, which ranges from June to November, don’t worry. Embrace the rain by exploring the city’s culinary scene and looking for cozy cafés and restaurants. 

If you’re traveling during the off-seasons of May and December, take advantage of the less hectic streets to discover hidden gems and immerse yourself in the authentic local experience.

This is not only the best place to visit in Manila but a must see in Manila. So start your Manila 3 day itinerary by immersing yourself in Manila’s rich history in Intramuros, the historic walled city. 

You may want to treat yourself to a traditional Filipino breakfast at Barbara’s Heritage Restaurant before you start exploring, which is located in Intramuros. Enjoy Filipino specialties like tapsilog (marinated beef with garlic rice and fried egg) in the charming ambiance of this historic establishment. Or you can explore then treat yourself!

Explore the well-preserved Spanish colonial buildings and stroll around the cobblestone streets. After dinner, take a leisurely stroll through the park’s lush greenery and savour a relaxing evening under the stars.

Day 3: Experience Local Life and Cuisine

Start day 3 of your 3 days in Manila at Quiapo Market – a must visit when in Manila. 

Quiapo Market and Quiapo Church

Explore the vibrant streets of Quiapo Market, one of Manila’s oldest and most iconic markets, where you can find a wide range of products, from fresh produce to religious items. Dive into the hustle and bustle of the marketplace, browsing through stalls and bargaining for unique finds and souvenirs. 

Afterward, visit one of the best places to go in Manila – Quiapo Church. This historic landmark holds deep religious significance for Filipinos. Admire the church’s magnificent architecture and pay your respects to the respected Black Nazarene statue. Take a moment for quiet reflection or attend a mass to experience the spiritual essence of this sacred place.

For lunch, sample traditional Filipino street food at nearby stalls and eateries, such as balut (fertilized duck embryo) and kwek-kwek (deep-fried quail eggs coated in orange batter). Don’t be afraid to try new flavors and textures for a true taste of Filipino cuisine!

Roxas Boulevard and Cultural Center of the Philippines Complex

In the afternoon, take a scenic drive along Roxas Boulevard, Manila’s waterfront promenade. Enjoy views of Manila Bay and the iconic sunset as you make your way to the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Complex.

Stroll through the pathways adorned with vibrant flowers and classical sculptures. The view of the Hohensalzburg Fortress in the background adds a touch of magic to your morning. One thing to note about Salzburg is that the iconic “Sound of Music” was filmed there! While we were walking through the Gardens, there was a performer singing “Do-Re-Mi”. The “Sound of Music” was Maddy’s first musical, so it was truly a magical experience.

Late Morning: Mozart’s Birthplace

Take a short walk to Mozart’s Birthplace, the very house where the musical prodigy was born. Explore the exhibits showcasing Mozart’s early life and musical achievements. The residence provides insights into Mozart’s creative process and his life in Salzburg. Something that was so fun while we were there was the music of Austrian performers right outside his former residence. We had so much fun listening to the music and taking in the scenery around us. Also, don’t forget to walk around the corner to Cafe Konditorei, which is famous for the Mozartkugel! The Mozartkugel is a delicious chocolate-covered marzipan confection named after the iconic composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. If you’re from the United States, stock up as they don’t deliver outside  of Europe!

Lunch: St. Peter Stiftskulinarium

Head to St. Peter Stiftskulinarium, the oldest restaurant in the world. This restaurant was first documented in the year 803 and can be found in the heart of Salzburg’s Old Town. All we can say is wow! The interior was so traditional, yet modern in certain aspects, and the food was incredible. Many dishes there are traditional Austrian cuisine and there’s no question why they have been in business for so long. The location, atmosphere, and food is hard to beat!

Afternoon: Get Lost in Salzburg Old Town

Let the afternoon unfold as you wander through the narrow streets of Old Town. Discover hidden squares, picturesque alleys, and charming boutiques. Don’t miss landmarks like Salzburg Cathedral and St. Peter’s Abbey. Take your time to absorb the rich history and architectural wonders around every corner.

Dinner: Zum fidelen Affen

We also noticed that they were about to prepare for a corporate event, so the restaurant is extremely versatile in its use.

This is also the time other sunseekers love to visit Marbella, Spain and the place is full of tourists, particularly British and German. But this can just add to the atmosphere!

How to get to Marbella, Spain

Marbella is found on the coast of Southern Spain on the Costa del Sol. There are many ways to get to Marbella. You could sail. Perhaps you could drive if you are driving in Europe on holiday. Many catch a plane to Málaga Airport which has connections with most of Europe’s hubs. You can also reach it by train and bus. It is just up to you as to how you want to arrive.

TIP! For your first trip in a new city I suggest you go around the entire route first. While sitting back, relaxing  take a mental note of things you would like to come back to. Then on the next trip round, you can begin hopping on and off at the sites you want to see before hopping back on again to the next stop.

2. Short Time Visits

If you have limited time in a city, hop on hop off bus tours help you make the most of your time. Doing a complete circuit usually takes a couple of hours. So if you only have a day, or less in a city, these are great. However, even if staying longer, going on a hop on hop off bus tour will show you the places you can go back to if you have the time.

You can discover the city you are in by local transport however, you will need to firstly do your research so you know how to buy a ticket, what lines to travel on and which train stations or bus stops to get off at. When going on a hop on hop off bus you don’t have to worry about these things as the bus takes you to all the famous sights. I don’t have to do any planning or thinking – it’s done for me! I just have to sit back and relax and enjoy the sights.

5. Don’t Have to Worry About Learning How to Drive in a Foreign Place

When going on hop on hop off bus tours you don’t need to learn how to drive in a foreign place. Also, I don’t need to learn specific rules, worry about getting fuel, finding a parking spot or research a route to follow if I have rented a car. And I don’t get lost while trying to find a place, particularly when travelling solo and I don’t have a navigator.

6. Time Saver

Most jump on jump off bus routes only take a couple of hours to complete if done in the one go making this option much faster when renting a car or using public transport to see the sights. Even though using public transport is a great way to get to know a city, it can be time consuming. As mentioned previously, when you rent a car you need to consider road rules, getting fuel, find parking and research where you will be driving to. Taking the hop on hop off bus is a time saver as it has done everything for me.

During this time I can hop on and hop off as many times as I like within that time. This definitely is very affordable as my transport costs are covered for the whole time. There are often deals associated with your hop-on hop-off ticket or the ticket may be part of a deal. Having discounts on attractions will help you save money so you can enjoy other things on your holiday, like a meal. If you want to get the most out of your city tour, research which tour operators are offering deals to the attractions.

9. Fun Facts!

Along with the bus ride comes a commentary. Sometimes a recorded commentary while other times a person providing facts and figures, historical backgrounds, things that happened at a particular place and quirky trivia about the places you are visiting. There are some cons to riding aboard a hop on hop off bus tour.

1. The bus may not visit all the tourist destinations you want to visit.
2. You will have to time your trip around bus arrival and departure times at each stop.
3. It might be busy and you might struggle to get a seat and need to wait for the next bus.
4. The weather may not be the best to sit up top.
5. You will be seen with lots of other tourists on the bus. Unsavoury types may see you get on and get off the bus and may think of you as a tourist to rob – so be security conscious. There are ways how to not look like a tourist as you travel.

TIP! Dress for the weather. Wear sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses when it is warm and sunny. Take an umbrella or rain coat and a warm jacket for colder weather. It can also get a little windy up top – so hold onto your hats!

Seeing the Hollywood Sign should definitely be on your ‘Best Things to do in LA’ list

Who would have thought that nine white letters on top of a hill could become LA’s most iconic sight? And it is a sight everyone wants to see, particularly on a first visit to Los Angeles. The sign was originally created as an advertisement for a local real estate agency and nowadays it appears in many movies and TV as an establishing shot. I mean, who doesn’t know they are in LA when they see the Hollywood sign! 

The sign is visible from many places across LA but many like to climb up to the top of the sign for a panoramic view of the city and for a selfie! To get there, you can hike from Griffith Observatory (next on my best things to do in Los Angeles post) or follow the trail starting at the Bronson Canyon entrance to Griffith Park. Do the hike as early as you can as the trail can sometimes get pretty busy!

Griffith Observatory

Griffith Observatory is a world-famous observatory with some amazing interactive exhibits inside and outside offers fabulous views over Los Angeles and provides some great hiking trails. You will find it in the city of Los Angeles up on Mount Hollywood in Griffith Park. So you could visit the Hollywood sign and the observatory together. There is free entrance with parking becoming scarce quite quickly but you can easily take the cheap DASH shuttle located at the bottom of the hill up to the observatory.

Griffith Observatory is open Tuesday through Friday from 12 to 10pm and on weekends from 10am to 10pm. You can go anytime within this timeframe though if you went at night you can peer through the large telescopes out into the cosmos! How cool! Budget around 3 hours at Griffith Observatory to enjoy all it has to offer. If you want to go to the planetarium show you will need to purchase a ticket.

Walk of Fame and Hollywood Boulevard

Walk the Walk of Fame and check out all the Stars

Who hasn’t seen photos of celebrities posing next to their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame? I mean, there is always a new one being reported on many different TV shows! Well the Hollywood Walk of Fame is probably the most famous sidewalk in the world and you can walk down it to see the terrazzo and brass stars in this eternal tribute to celebrities who have left their mark on the entertainment industry. It’s great to walk along the sidewalk checking out the stars and even having your photo taken with one. And you will be walking for a while! There are some 2,600 stars with hundreds of foot and handprints featured over 1.3 miles of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street. TCL Chinese Theatre

The TCL Chinese Theatre is definitely a ‘not to miss’ when in LA particularly if this is your first time to Los Angeles. It is located on Hollywood Boulevard alongside the Hollywood Walk of Fame. This spot draws many tourists from around the world to see it. The theatre is where some of the most prominent movie premieres have occurred since 1927. And where some of the biggest movie stars have walked the red carpet. In what is called the Forecourt of the Stars you can put your own hands in the imprints of some of the most famous names in the movie industry. So much fun. You can explore this part for free but you can go on a tour of the theatre at a cost of $10 per person and it lasts around 30 mins.

Universal Studios

A must visit on your first trip to Los Angles is Universal Studios.

Universal Studios, is one of the top theme parks in Southern California. You can walk around or take the cable car tour around the studio and discover the movie sets including the largest street movie set in Hollywood. Then perhaps go on one of the 21 rides. Perhaps the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey for some wizardry magic! Visit the Universal Studios website for details and to plan your visit. There is so much to see and do at Universal Studios that I would plan on spending at least the whole day here. If you have time you could also do the Warner Brothers Studio tour too!

Disneyland

Disneyland in Anaheim, Los Angeles as one of the ‘happiest places on earth’! Your trip to LA will never be complete without a day at Disneyland. Definitely arrive at the main gate to enter. This is a great photo opportunity. While entering, pick up a map of Disneyland as it will show you where all the ‘different lands’ are, the rides, restaurants and cafes and toilets. Or you can download one from the Disneyland website here.

On entering Disney you will be in Main Street where there are plenty of shops and where the grand parade is held each day. And in the distance is the Disneyland Castle we all know and love that was based on the Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany. There are different worlds inside Disneyland to enjoy. From Fantasy Land to Frontier Land to the Star Wars Land, there is a land for everyone to enjoy. I hope you can enjoy them all. Be aware to go on the rides, there are often long queues and you may want to buy your ticket to ride in advance so you can jump the queues. Spend the whole day in Disneyland to see the Disneyland Castle during the day and at night.

Shop Till You Drop on Rodeo Drive

You cannot come to Los Angeles and not go shopping. A must do on any Los Angeles visit is to visit the upscale neighbourhood of Beverly Hills. Here you will find Rodeo Drive where all the celebrities go shopping. Within the three blocks are over 100 world-renowned retailers. So if you are after something stylish and high-end, then Rodeo Drive is a must shop destination. 

If you prefer more affordable fashion and accessories check our Santee Alley in downtown Los Angeles. In this fashion district you will find a flea market plus many merchants selling garments, footwear, accessories and cosmetics. All at more affordable prices.

Discover Santa Monica Pier and other Beaches

Santa Monica is known for its Pier

Spend a day while in Los Angeles discovering its beaches, in particular the famous Santa Monica Pier at Santa Monica. You have probably seen the pier on many tv shows as it is, like the Hollywood sign another iconic spot in Los Angeles. 

Santa Monica Pier is a full-service amusement park with many awesome attractions, souvenir shops and numerous bars and restaurants. After all, it is 3.5 miles (5.6 km) long. Built in 1909 the pier was the first concrete pier on the USA West Coast so its super strong to hold all the rides and things on the pier. One of the most popular attractions is the solar powered red and yellow Ferris wheel. It is free into Pacific Park though there is a charge to go on the rides and enter some attractions. Budget between $5-$12 per ride and/or attractions. Santa Monica Pier is open daily from 10am to 8pm so you could spend a long time here.

After spending possibly a morning on the pier you can walk to nearby beaches including the quirky Venice Beach where you could relax on the sand. Or maybe go roller skating.  

End your day in one of the many restaurants enjoying a good ‘Clam Chowder’. This was the first place I ever tried Clam Chowder, and from that day, I was sold, and enjoy it often. 

You can take public buses to reach the beach or you could go on a tour. No matter how you decide to get there, Santa Monica Pier and Venice Beach need to be part of every Los Angeles itinerary as it is one of the best things to see and do.

My Suggested 6 Day Los Angeles Itinerary

How long should you visit LA for? Who knows, is my answer. It will depend on what you want to see and do. If it is your first time, and you have the time I would suggest at least 6 days. Here is my suggested itinerary for Los Angeles for a 6 day visit.

1 – Arrive and go on Hop-on Hop-off LA Tour, Walk the Walk of Fame and visit the TCL Chinese Theatre
2 – Hollywood Sign, Griffith Observatory
3 – Disneyland
4 – Universal Studios
5 – Santa Monica Pier, Venice Beach and Malibu
6 – Shop till you drop

Los Angeles is a sprawling city and therefore has lots of areas to stay in. Here is my overview of the best areas to stay in Los Angeles to help you choose where to stay during your visit to LA. There is something for every budget. As you will be staying a few days in Los Angeles consider booking accommodation with cooking facilities available so you can cook some meals to save some dollars.

1. Los Angeles Downtown – great area to stay in for travellers without a car and who are after the nightlife. LA Downtown is centrally located for museums, trendy restaurants and live clubs. Some suggestions:

3. Hollywood – great area to stay in Los Angeles for first-time visitors to Los Angeles. The iconic LA neighbourhood is centrally located to get to the emus-see LA tourist attractions of Hollywood Boulevard, Walk of Fame, TCL Chinese Theatre and more. Some suggestions:

   Mid-range Hotel: Elaine’s Hollywood Bed & Breakfast.
   Luxury Hotel: Le Parc at Melrose
4. West Hollywood – if you are seeking the Los Angeles nightlife when West Hollywood is a great area to stay for music, entertainment and nightlife. Some suggestions:

5. Venice Beach – great area to stay in Los Angeles for budget travellers, plus, it is near the beaches. Some suggestions:

I always like to start my visit to any big city with a hop-on hop-off sightseeing tour. Why? Because they will take me to all the best bits of a city and tell my why I should spend my time there. Edinburgh has a wonderful hop-on hop-off tour and I highly recommend it, particularly if it is your first time in Edinburgh. Explore Edinburgh Castle

You cannot miss Edinburgh Castle as it is a key component of Edinburgh’s skyline. The castle stands atop a tall rock, making it visible from most parts of the city it overlooks below. The site of the castle has been used for centuries as the perfect defensive location and this castle, Edinburgh Castle has played a great part in Scottish history. At the entry gates you will see where William Wallace’s head was displayed after his beheading. It was also home to Mary Queen of Scots and Bonnie Prince Charlie. And if you take the tour of the castle, you will see the bedroom where Mary gave birth to her son. 

Also on display in Edinburgh Castle are the Crown Jewels of Scotland and the Stone of Destiny which has been used in the the coronation of British monarchs for many centuries. Located within the castle is the National War Museum that explores Scotland’s history of war. See military artefacts such as uniforms, banners and medals. Discover the Highland-Lowland battles in the 17th and 18th including up to Scotland’s modern-day military presence. History buffs, such as myself, will absolutely love visiting Edinburgh Castle.

I suggest touring the castle in the morning as it can become busy with visitors later. However, if you can stick around for the firing of the One O’Clock Gun. This has been fired every day, except on a Sunday, since 1861. Maritime captains would set their clocks to navigate the oceans by it. If you have moved on before this happens, don’t worry, you will hear it if in the local vicinity.

Walk the Royal Mile

The Royal Mile is the cobbled street that you have probably walked up to get to Edinburgh Castle. It links Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyrood House at the bottom of the road. It is wonderful walking up or down the Royal Mile which will only take about 15 minutes if you don’t deviate into the shops and museums along the mile. My favourite museum was the Scotch Whisky Experience where I learnt about distilling of scotch whisky! Do ensure you have good walking shoes on as it is a cobbled street with lots of uneven surfaces. You could spend quite a few hours along the Royal Mile as there are plenty of unique shops, cafes, museums in some of the oldest buildings in Edinburgh that you could visit on your way down to the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

Visit the Palace Of Holyrood

The Palace of Holyrood is the residence of the reigning British monarch when in Edinburgh. It is located at the bottom of the Royal Mile and across from the Scottish Parliament. Built in 1678, the palace has housed generations of queens and kings. A visit will show you what royal life was like in the 17th century. Visit the State Apartments which are used by the British Royal Family today when they are in residence. See the fine art on the walls and step into Mary Queen of Scots’ chambers (she lived there between the years of 1561-1567) that includes the room where her secretary was murdered in 1566 by her husband. Stroll through the Old Town

The Old Town of Edinburgh is exactly that, the old part of town. The Royal Mile is part of the Old Town, so after walking the Royal Mile, go down some of the side streets and visit some of the local boutiques and tasty cafes. The whole old town looks like something from Harry Potter. Speaking of Harry Potter go on the Harry Potter tour to some of the spots that inspired JK Rowling in Edinburgh. Or visit the Real Mary King’s Close while here. It is a hidden system of streets and spaces built hundreds of years ago underneath the streets of the Royal Mile and Old Town.

Shop till you Drop on Princes Street

Any visit to Edinburgh should involve visiting the historic Princes Street. Princes Street has been the heart of Edinburgh since 1770 and is its main thoroughfare. Shop till you drop along Edinburgh’s most popular retail hubs. You will find big high street stores to unique boutiques and plenty of coffee shops to wet your whistle. And you will also get great views of Edinburgh Castle while walking along Princes Street. If you need a break from shopping, head to the Princes Street Gardens that features a beautiful floral clock, war memorial and green lawns that are perfect for a rest or a picnic.

There are also a number of historic Edinburgh landmarks along and near Princes Street. The Scott Monument has a distinctive gothic-style architecture that was constructed in 1844 in dedication to the Scottish author Sir Walter Scott. It reaches 61 metres high and is the world’s tallest monument to a writer! The monument also features statues of other prominent Scottish poets and writers including Robert Burns and Lord Byron. Take the steps to the monument’s top for great views over the city and the Princes Street Gardens.

Hike up Arthur’s Seat

Even if you aren’t an outdoor enthusiast, Arthur’s Seat is a must-visit and one of the best things to do in Edinburgh. Arthur’s Seat is actually a dormant volcano that is one of the highest points in Edinburgh. By hiking to the top, which can take around 30 minutes, you will be treated to breath-taking views over Edinburgh. Plus, you will find a hill fort dating from around 600 A.D. Arthur’s Seat is a historical place and is considered to be the possible location of Camelot, King Arthur’s legendary castle! How cool is that! Well worth getting puffed out for! I would suggest only doing this hike when the weather is clear as the views won’t be that great on a foggy day. 

TIP: Take a coat on windy days as it can get quite blustery up there.

Visit National Monument of Scotland on Calton Hill

Get great views over Edinburgh at Calton Hill

If you don’t fancy the walk up to Arthur’s Seat, don’t worry, there is an alternative, Calton Hill. The National Monument of Scotland lies on Calton Hill. The monument was designed to commemorate Scottish soldiers. It has stood there since 1829 and tourists and locals flock to this unfinished structure. Mostly they go for the breath-taking views across the city instead of hiking up Arthur’s Seat.

Discover the Scottish National Gallery

The Scottish National Gallery is Scotland’s national art gallery so if you are a art nut, it is a must-see during your Edinburgh visit. Located in the heart of Edinburgh on Princes Street, the beautiful neoclassical building houses some of the rich fine art with work by Van Deck, Rubens and Gainsborough plus a number of Scottish artists include Sir David Wilkie and Sir Henry Raeburn. After enjoying the art you can head to the cafe and restaurant and get fabulous views across the Princes Street Gardens. That is an artwork within itself! It’s also a good place to be when it is cold and wet outside.

Be amazed by the National Museum of Scotland

The National Museum was one of my favourite places to visit while in Edinburgh which is why it made my lifestyle of best things to do in Edinburgh. Now I know museums aren’t for everyone but I really enjoyed strolling around the museum check out the natural history section, seeing the iconic Grand Gallery and exploring the World Cultures Gallery. But that is just me, I do enjoy a good museum, particularly when it is cold outside!

Visit Leith and the Royal Yacht Britannia

In the late 1980s and 90s, Leith was probably a neighbourhood in Edinburgh you would avoid. This has now changed, and this waterfront setting, only fifteen minutes from the centre of Edinburgh is a great place to enjoy a drink and dinner. Or you could get a cuppa on the deck of the Royal Yacht Britannia which is moored at Ocean Terminal in Leith. To get here, take the Line 35 bus from Chambers Street that is next to the National Museum of Scotland, or take a taxi or Uber. 

3 Day Edinburgh Itinerary

So these are my favourite things to do while in Edinburgh. If you want to know how to structure your time while in Edinburgh here is a suggested 3-day Edinburgh itinerary. If you want to do other things in Edinburgh, just add a day or two to the itinerary.

Day 1 – Start by doing the Hop-on Hop-off Sightseeing Tour. Then head to Edinburgh Castle, walk down the Royal Mile and enjoy the Palace of Holyrood. Maybe discover the Old Town and go on a 2 hour Harry Potter Walking Tour. 

Day 2 – Hike up Arthurs Seat for great views over the city before discovering a museum. Head to Leith for dinner and a drink.

Day 3 – Shop till you drop on Princes Street and visit some of the old buildings, museums and monuments on and just off Princes Street.

Edinburgh has its own airport and major train (Waverley Station) and bus stations so you will be able to get to Edinburgh either by plane, train or bus. Once in Edinburgh you can get around on the Lothian Buses.

Where to Stay in Edinburgh

Most of the best things to do in Edinburgh are located close together so staying in the centre of Edinburgh will allow you to walk to most places.

LUXURY: The Native Edinburgh is a 5-star hotel located not far from Edinburgh Castle. Great spot with all the luxuries you’d expect.

MID-RANGE: The Britannia Edinburgh Hotel is not too far from the Royal Mile. This is where I stayed and enjoyed it immensely. It had everything I needed and was in easy reach of all the best things to do in Edinburgh.

BUDGET: Castle Rock Hostel is a popular hostel for young travellers as is the new CoDE Pod Hostel – The Court located just off the Royal Mile. Sleep in a pod in a dormitory-style room. How cool!

And now you are planning the perfect 3 day Paris itinerary that includes all the best things to see and do in the City of Lights. To help you make the most of your time on your Paris 3 day itinerary, I have put together the following post of what to see and do in Paris in 3 days.

Paris is truly a stunning city with an interesting history and lots of beautiful buildings to see and many foods to eat. How will you fit it all in during your 3 days in Paris? In this post I’ve included the best things to see and do in Paris in 3 days in order to maximise your time so you have the best time. And leave Paris having experienced the best Paris has to offer whether it is your first, or even second visit to this magical city.

Of course, the longer you have to spend in Paris the better to discover all its nooks and crannies. But if three days in Paris is all you have, then so be it. But 3 days in Paris is still plenty of time to see some of the very best things to do in Paris. During the three days in Paris, this itinerary covers many of the best things to see and do plus includes suggestions of where to stay and how to get around Paris to make the most of your time. So no matter if you are visiting Paris as a solo traveller, on a Paris romantic getaway, having a girls or guys long weekend in Paris or visiting on a family holiday to Paris with kids, there is something for everyone on this itinerary of Paris.

I have divided this post into two sections. The first section is the best three day Paris itinerary. The second part provides details of how to organise your Paris in three days itinerary which could be a trip on its own, or as part of a longer Central Europe holiday. So let’s get into what to see in Paris in this three day Paris itinerary so you can tick the French capital off your bucket list.

3 Days in Paris Itinerary

Day 1 of this 3 Days in Paris

Eiffel Tower

Closest Metro Line to the Eiffel Tower is Champ de Mars / Tour Eiffel on line RER C. 

The Eiffel Tower, it can’t get any more French than that. It is one of the most iconic tourist attractions in Europe, and for a good reason. And I am sure it is likely on the top of your to do list – and that is why it is the first thing to visit on any Paris itinerary.

Construction on the romantic landmark began in January 1887 and was completed in March 1889. You can appreciate the Eiffel Tower from many places around Paris – it is that tall. Or you can sit below in the gardens at Palais de Chaillot or along the Pont d’lena – the bridge just before the tower – to get some great photos. Once you are at the base of the tower you are too close to get many great shots.

The best way to appreciate the Eiffel Tower and Paris is to go to the top or one of the other two levels where you will receive wonderful views over Paris. You can walk the stairs to the first level or catch the lift, where you could relax in the restaurant with a drink. The view from here is very impressive but take the elevator to the top to really get the best views.

As you walk around you can appreciate what an engineering marvel the tower really is. It is easy to spend an hour or so at the top appreciating the views and taking photos, however, on the way down, why not call into the restaurant for a champagne or wine. This is quite an indulgent, touristy and expensive thing to do however, I thoroughly enjoyed every minute I sat there with a glass of wine admiring the spectacular Paris views.

As the Eiffel Tower is the most popular tourist things to do in Paris, it can be rather busy, so it is advisable to purchase a ticket in advance to jump the queue. If it is your first visit to Paris, you may want to budget to go up the Eiffel Tower twice, once during the day, and then again at night. I have done that, not on the same visit, and the view at night is just as good as during the day seeing all the lights of Paris.

You may want to grab some lunch after getting back on the ground and there are plenty of cafe’s to choose from. Next stop on this first day of our 3 day itinerary in Paris is Notre-Dame. You can walk there which can take around an hour or take the train which will take around 20 minutes or so.

TIP: It’s great to sit outside at a cafe or restaurant however, be prepared to be charged a little more.

Musee D’Orsay

On your way to Notre-Dame you could visit the Musee D’Orsay which is an art museum housed in an old train station. Works of Van Gogh, Monet, Cézanne, Berthe Morisot, and many others can be found in Musee D’Orsay. The museum, which opened in 1986, is one of the biggest art museums in the world. If you like art, you could spend hours here!

Notre-Dame de Paris

Notre-Dame de Paris or ‘Old Woman of Paris’, is among the most stunning medieval Catholic cathedrals in the world. It is found on the Île de la Cité in the 4th arrondissement of Paris. It’s construction began in 1163 and took some 200 years to build. Over the centuries it has been added to and desecrated during the French Revolution. Unfortunately, in 2019 Notre Dame underwent a tragic fire and is currently being rebuilt. That means, the ageless beauty can only be admired from the outside. Oh well, there is plenty to admire on the Île de la Cité. You could sit along the Seine and watch the people go by on land and on the water.

The Latin Quarter

Across from the Île de la Cité is the Latin Quarter. It is home to the Sorbonne University and has many student-filled cafes of which you could partake. The area, also known as the 5th arrondissement, is also famous for its bookshops with the Shakespeare & Company being the most notable. Maybe pop next door for a coffee and pastry in the coffee shop next door with the same name. After your coffee, there is the stately Panthéon building to explore which houses the remains of notables like Marie Curie and Voltaire.

But next, we are walking to the Louvre which should take around half an hour.

The Louvre Museum

If you have to pick only one museum to go to, head to the Louvre. You cannot miss it with its glass Pyramid entrance. Depending on your interest in art spare a few hours at least while you’re there since it is the second-biggest art museum in the world. However, if you are like me and don’t appreciate great art, I would still visit to see the Mona Lisa, a painting by Leonardo da Vinci in the 16th century. I won’t spoil it for you, but she is smaller than I expected and it was hard to get close due to the crowds. If art ‘aint your thing’, don’t worry, you can go outside and appreciate the Tuileries Gardens. 

By now your feet might be aching, I know mine are, and it should be time for dinner. You could head back to the Latin Quarter or go back to the Eiffel Tower. The Eiffel Tower at night is not to be missed. It is lit up and night and you might want to go up to the top again for views over Paris at night. Then head to your accommodation for the evening unless you are looking for some nightlife which can be found in Le Baron Paris not too far from the Eiffel Tower.

You could end your day along the Seine Riverbanks. During the warmer months the riverbanks along the Seine River allow you to sunbathe during the day and enjoy a drink at night. The Parc Rives de Seine extends from the Ponte des Arts to the Eiffel Tower on the left bank. And from Passerelle Leopold – Sedar-Senghor at Bastille on the right bank. Or head back to the left bank for dinner then wander south into the Latin Quarter to experience more of older Paris. On the Left Bank you will find many cafés and pubs open for an after-dinner apéritif. Whatever you decide to do, enjoy the lights of Paris. 

Day 2 of this 3 day Paris itinerary

Place de la Concorde

Start day 2 on this 3 day Paris itinerary at the Place de la Concorde. This is one of Paris’ major public squares and was scene of some executions. Nowadays, it is more peaceful with fountains (Fontaine des Mers and Fontaine des Fleuves), statues and an Egyptian obelisk, the Luxor Obelisk and is home to some prestigious hotels. After exploring this area you are at one end of the Champs-Elysées. Time to shop, if you have a good bank balance.

Champs-Elysées

The Champs-Elysées is just over 2km long. The glory of the picture-perfect street only started in the mid-1800s. Before that, the “most beautiful avenue in the world”, as it’s often called today, used to be a fairly unpopular spot. Gradually, sidewalks, street lamps, cafes, and theatres found their way to the avenue, and over centuries it gained the look that is now known all around the globe. If you don’t include any shopping during your walk along the Champs-Elysées it will take around half an hour to walk the length to reach the Arc de Triomph.

Along with the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe is one of the most well known structures in Paris. The famous monument was built in honour of the people who fought in the Napoleonic and French Revolutionary wars. It is possible to climb to the top of the iconic monument and view one of the largest roundabouts in the world. The 12-lane road is one of the busiest of its kind and is worth observing. Be careful when you cross it! And also get great views down the Champs-Elysées and over Paris.

From the Arc de Triomphe head to the Metro for a journey to Sacre-Coeur and the Montmartre area.

Sacre-Coeur

Sacre-Coeur is an elegant Roman Catholic church located at the top of the highest hill in Paris – Montmartre. It is the second most-visited landmark in Paris. The fairytale-like church was constructed by the same architect who designed Notre Dame. The basilica, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, was finished in 1914, after almost 40 years of hard work.

The basilica is as beautiful inside as it is outside. In addition, the steps in front of the church are perfect for sunset-watching. If you like, you have the option to climb to the top of Sacre-Coeur for an even better view. Trust me, the 300 steps are worth it!

Montmartre

Montmartre, a 130-meter high hill, is an artsy historic area. In the 1800s, Montmartre was one of the cheapest places to live. The affordable cost of living attracted artists who made the neighborhood what it is today.

The main attraction Sacre-Coeur is not at all the only sight worth seeing. Montmartre Museum and the picture-worthy La Maison Rose shouldn’t be missed when you’re wandering along the streets of the area. In Montmartre, you’ll find many lovely cafes to relieve your hunger as well.

You’ll spot many street artists here and have the opportunity to have your portrait painted by one of them. Near Sacre-Coeur, you may spot the mysterious “sinking house”. Truth be told, the house is actually not sinking but if you capture it at a right angle, you can create the illusion of a house that’s merging into a grassy hill.

Moulin Rouge

End your day here in one of the bars, cafes or restaurants in Montmartre, but as it is also home to the famous Moulin Rouge, the birthplace of the modern form of the can-can dance, perhaps consider ending a dinner and show here. If you love singing and dancing then you should enjoy the Moulin Rouge, though if you are visiting Paris with kids be aware their are some breasts on display during the dancing. That aside, I thought the entertainment was great. Tickets aren’t the cheapest, but it is such a great experience. There are shows three times nightly, 7pm, 9pm and 11pm.

Day 3 of this 3 day Paris itinerary

Day Trip to Palace of Versailles

Day 3 in Paris is starting at a Paris train station for the ride to the Palace of Versailles. You can take a train on the RER Line C which arrives at Versailles Château – Rive Gauche train station and then it is just a 10 minute walk to the Versailles Palace. Or take an SNCF trains from Gare Montparnasse and arrive at Versailles Chantiers train station, which is 18 minutes on foot to the Palace. There are also many tours you could hop onto. Check out some of them here.

The Palace of Versailles is a good example of a royal palace from the Baroque time. The magnificent design of the place, inside and out, is a work of some of the finest French architects. It is the former home of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette was constructed in 1624-1698. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world with over 15 million visitors coming to see the historical beauty every year. Prepare for at least half a day, though some spend the whole day, of discovering the beautiful palace before walking through the exquisite gardens with their opulent fountains. Walk to the Queen’s Hamelt, where Marie-Antoinette would escape court life. 

You could also discover the Royal Opera of Versailles which is a stunning opera house at the Palace. It is a place of great acoustics and impressive architecture. The idea of building a hall for concerts and plays came from king Louis XIV. At the time, it was the biggest concert hall in Europe, accomodating 712 people in the audience. It remains to be a stunning piece of art, and should not be missed when visiting the Palace of Versailles. Don’t forget to wear good walking shoes.

Head back to Paris after your visit to the Palace of Versailles. Depending on the time you get back you may want to go shopping for local French souvenirs. Perhaps take another visit to the Louvre. Maybe enjoy a meal on your last night in Paris or at the Trocadero Gardens and watch the sunset over the Eiffel Tower.

Organise Your Paris Trip

When to Visit Paris

In my opinion, anytime is a good time to visit Paris. Spring in Paris sees beautiful flowers as the city begins to warm up. Summer in Paris is the warmest but you will also be sharing the city with many tourists. Autumn in Paris sees the leaves begin to fall while the winter in Paris is cold with fewer tourists and cheaper accommodation prices. Christmas time in Paris can be magical with the Christmas lights and decorations. Whenever you get the chance to visit Paris, you will make it the perfect time to be in Paris.

Where to Stay in Paris

Paris offers many accommodation options but to make the most of your 3 days in Paris, I suggest to stay close to the centre of Paris where you will find many of the tourist attractions that I include in this 3 day itinerary for Paris. On saying that, not all of them are close together. Here are some Paris accommodation options, from budget to ‘let’s splurge on some luxury’. Wherever you decide to stay, you can easily get around Paris by walking or catching The Metro.

For this Paris 3 day itinerary you will need accommodation for two nights. It is presumed you will arrive the morning of day 1 and leave the evening of day 3. If not, book an extra night or two.

Hostels in Paris: There are many hostels in Paris to choose from. Generator Paris is a designer hostel in the 10th district. It is 2.7km from the centre of Paris with a Metro nearby. Another option is St Christopher’s Inn Paris which is near Gare du Nord Train Station providing easy access to getting around Paris. For more hostel options check out HostelWorld.

Budget to mid-range Hotels in Paris: You are spoilt for choice with the number of budget to mid-range hotels in Paris. They offer a variety of rooms for solo travellers to families visiting Paris with kids. Try Hotel Abbatial Saint Germain or Hotel Metropol.

Luxury splurge in Paris: For an opulent stay in Paris consider Relais Christine or La Maison Champs Elysee.

Getting Around Paris

Paris is a large city, which I found it easy to get around. This is because I did my research and studied a map to ensure I could see as much as possible on my trip to Paris. The two ways I got around was by walking and taking the Metro. I did slip in a ride on the hop-on hop-off sight seeing bus to give me a glimpse of what I could see before I started venturing on my own.

The Metro

Paris’ metro system is extremely developed and is a great way to get around Paris. The city is made up of 20 districts (arrondissements) and you will find Paris’ main sights are spread around the arrondissements and so, you may not be able to walk from one tourist spot to the next. For instance the Louvre is in the 1st, Notre Dame is in the 4th, the Eiffel Tower is in the 7th and Montmartre is in the 18th so it is easier to get on the Metro.

To get around on the Metro, I suggest you purchase a carnet – a group of 10 tickets and replenish them if you need to. However, you could consider purchasing the Paris Pass which is designed for tourists visiting Paris. It not only provides entry to attractions and landmarks but offers access to the bus, metro and RER systems. Find out about a Paris Pass here.

Hop on Hop off Paris Bus

Another option to get around Paris is to use the Hop on Hop Off Paris sightseeing bus. You can purchase a 1, 2 or 3 day pass. This bus will take you to many of the top tourist spots and provide you with an interesting and informative commentary. Yes, it is a very touristy option, but it is also a great option to get around Paris.

Walking around Paris

Walking is my favourite way to get around Paris. Keeping my feet on the ground allowed me to discover Paris and its many major sights, side streets and cute cafes. When walking, ensure you wear good and most importantly, flat walking shoes. Many of Paris’ streets are cobbled in a fan pattern making wearing high heels difficult, and in my opinion, dangerous.

TRIVIA: Some Paris streets are cobbled and have a fan pattern. This was because the prisoners of The Bastille would sit on the ground and lay the cobbles in front of them, starting from left to right. When a row was done, they would move forward and lay another line. This formed the fan pattern.

A quick word on Safety in Paris

In general, Paris is a safe city to travel in however, be aware of anyone approaching you. There are many tourists who visit Paris and unfortunately there are pickpockets, especially in crowds. Just be aware of your surrounds and keep an eye on your belongings.

What to Wear in Paris

Paris is one of the fashion capitals of the world and there are many notable world-renowned clothes designers. That doesn’t mean you need to wear them while being a tourist in Paris. The key to what to wear in Paris is to blend in and look fashionable but still be comfortable. But as you will be doing a lot of walking while in Paris, ensure to wear comfortable flat shoes like boots or casual loafers. And there are plenty of shops to purchase fashion so don’t worry too much about your clothes.

Are You Ready to Visit Paris?

After visiting Paris once, you’ll want to come back as this 3 days itinerary in Paris has really on touched on what there is to see and do. There is so much more to discover . Wherever you step, art in different forms surrounds you from all sides. Paris is not just a city, it is an experience. But enough of reading about it, go and have a Paris holiday of your own!

Extend your stay to a 4 day Paris itinerary by spending a day at Paris Disneyland. If you have 5 days to spend in Paris you could visit the Pere Lachaise Cemetery where well known people are buried. Such as Jim Morrison, Maria Calais, Edith Piaf, Oscar Wilde and Chopin. Keeping with the ‘dead theme’ visit the Catacombs which are tunnels dug in the 18th century in order to deal with Paris’ overflowing cemeteries. Or travel around France and visit some of its cities.

A great thing to see and do in Dublin is walk across Ha’penny Bridge over the Liffey River

I love visiting Dublin, maybe its the Aussie in me that enjoys and relates to the Irish way of good ’craic’ but I do. There is so much to see and do in Dublin. From discovering its history to enjoying a Guinness in a vibrant bar to learning about some of its famous authors. If you are visiting Dublin soon, then here are my suggestions on how you can make the most of your time in Dublin.

Best Things to See and Do in Dublin

There are many things to see and do in Dublin, and I’m now going to tell you about some of them. These are the best things to see and do as a tourist on your first visit to Dublin. The longer you have in Ireland, and the more times you can return you will be able to explore and discover Ireland more. Whether you have 1 day in Dublin, 2 days in Dublin or are visiting Dublin as part of a 7 day Ireland visit or a 1 month Ireland itinerary, you will be able to organise your holiday to Dublin by knowing some of the best things to see and do. So here are my suggestions of the best things to see and do in Dublin.

Take the Hop on Hop off Bus Tour of Dublin

When visiting a new city I always like to go on a hop on hop off bus tour to begin my visit. I do this as these tours are great to find out the best places to visit. And Dublin has a great hop on hop off Dublin bus tour. It only takes a couple of hours to be driven around Dublin to complete the circuit. Then on the second time round you can begin to get on and off the bus as you like at the best Dublin places that you want to visit.

There are 28 stops and two routes providing commentary. The ticket lasts for 24 hours giving you plenty of time to return to particular places that have caught your attention. Walk Over Ha’penny Bridge

Ha’penny Bridge was built in 1816 and was the first pedestrian bridge to span over the Liffey River. Then name comes from the price pedestrians paid (a halfpenny) to cross the bridge. You will recognise this structure because it is one of those things that identify Dublin and appears in most tourist brochures and on postcards, The bridge links the Northside to the Southside of Dublin.

One of the best things to see and do in Dublin is to visit The Guinness Storehouse.

If you love Guinness, or even if you don’t, you will want to partake in the Guinness story. The ground floor of the building tells the story of the beer’s ingredients (water, barley, hops and yeast) and takes you through the steps of how it is made. You will experience the smells of the processes and enjoy a tasting at the end. Tasting can depend on how long and how many you want to try.

If you are coming to Dublin on the Irish working holiday visa and are thinking of getting a job in one of the many bars in Dublin, take note of the ‘pouring ritual’ to get the perfect head. Take time to explore the museum and all its memorabilia. Afterwards head to the Gravity Bar for great views over Dublin.

Trinity College and the Book of Kells

Trinity College in Dublin was created by royal charter in 1592 and is Ireland’s highest ranked university. Today it is home to around 17,000 students studying many disciplines in the arts and humanities, law, business, engineering, science and health sciences. A guided tour of the university is very interesting. Walk through the college’s library and explore the Long Room that is lined with books and statue busts of famous masters. And don’t miss seeing the Book of Kells. Learn about the ancient illustrated book and why it is so important to Irish culture. Dublin Castle

Dublin Castle

Right next to Trinity College is Dublin Castle. It has been around since the early thirteenth century sitting proudly on the highest ridge in Dublin. For many centuries it was the headquarters of the English and British administration in Ireland. In 1922, when Ireland gained its independence, Dublin Castle was handed to the Irish government. Today it is a major government complex.

Walk around the grounds spanning some 11 acres and the gardens. Also, through some of the Castle’s many rooms, learn more about Irish culture. Author, Bram Stoker, worked at the castle for over 10 years while writing his famous novel Dracula.

St. Patricks Cathedral

While in Dublin you might want to visit St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Whether religious or not, this cathedral was built way back in 1191 and is rich with over 800 years of Irish history and culture. It is a beautiful architectural wonder both inside and out and it is easy to to stand and stare at it. If you love the book Gulliver’s Travels you will discover that Jonathan Swift, the author has his final resting place here because he was also the Dean of the Cathedral. Irish Whisky Museum and /or the Jameson Distillery

Learn about the history of Irish whisky at the Irish Whisky Museum. Get a detailed insight of all types of whisky and enjoy a taste test at the end of the tour. If this isn’t enough, visit the Old Jameson Distillery. This is where Jameson whisky was manufactured and distilled until it stopped production in the early 1970s. Walk around the old distillery and discover the processes used to create and refine Irish whisky. Maybe enjoy another whisky tasting.

Picnic at Phoenix Park / Dublin Zoo

About two miles (3.2km) from downtown Dublin you will find Phoenix Park. Not just any ordinary park this one is about 1,700 acres. Inside the tall walls that surround the park you will find many trees and plants, a sports field, the Wellington Monument and Dublin Zoo. Yes, that’s right Dublin Zoo. There are many animals at the zoo to visit in their spacious habitats. You could easily spend a day at the zoo and explore and relax in different parts of Phoenix Park.

Grafton Street, along with Henry Street are the two principal shopping streets in Dublin. In 2016 Grafton Street was the thirteenth most expensive shopping street in the world. Grafton Street was named after Henry Fitzroy the First Duke of Grafton and was originally a residential street. After the O’Connell Bridge was built Grafton Street became a busy cross-city route and has turned into the shopping precinct it is today.

You could easily spend a few hours, or longer visiting the many shops or watching buskers including musicians, poets and mime artists. If you need a break head in to Bewley’s Cafe (at 78-79 Grafton Street), one of Dublin’s favourite cafes since 1927. Or any one of the other cafes.

Visit Croke Park, home of Gaelic Football

Gaelic football is huge in Ireland so maybe watch a game of Gaelic football at Croke Park. One of the largest stadiums in Dublin, it is named after Archbishop Thomas Croke. The stadium is headquarters to the Gaelic Athletic Association and is a principal stadium where you can not only witness epic sporting battles but international rock and pop acts. Even if nothing is playing you can visit the stadium and take a tour. You can also incorporate into your tour to head 17 storeys high on to the roof. Known as The Ericsson Skyline tour you will receive unmatched panoramic views of Dublin. I hope you’re not afraid of heights.

Dublin Writers Museum

As a writer/blogger myself visiting the Dublin Writers Museum was high on my list of things to see and do while in Dublin.

Ireland has produced many writers and poets such as Samuel Beckett, Oscar Wilde, Jonathan Swift, Bram Stoker, Maeve Binchy, W.B. Yeats and of course, James Joyce. To honour writers, the Dublin Writers Museum was created.

Opened in 1991, the museum has plenty of exhibits dedicated to Irish writers here. Enjoy and discover the authors and their writing that has helped shaped Irish literature. There is an audio tour available in six languages that walks you through the museum. You will even get to see first and early editions of classic Irish literature including Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels and Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Finish your visit to the Dublin Writers Museum in the bookshop where there is a choice selection of Irish writers books.

James Joyce Centre

If you loved the Dublin Writers Museum you may want to visit The James Joyce Centre. This is a museum devoted to the life and works of James Joyce. Don’t know much about James Joyce and his writing? Then a visit to the James Joyce Centre is a must to learn about his writing and his most famous novel, Ulysses. It is said he is the best writer Ireland has ever produced – and Ireland has produced many writers!

Enjoy Irish Craic at Temple Bar

Temple Bar is Dublin’s premier tourist area and holds the title of being the ‘cultural quarter’. It is basically an area on the south bank of the River Liffey and is the centre of Dublin’s nightlife and also popular during the day. And I was very much looking forward to discovering ‘good craic’ here.

Along the cobblestoned streets you will find buskers, bars serving Guinness left, right and centre and many traditional pubs, bars, eateries and cafes. You will also find Temple Bar, one of the most iconic bars in all of Dublin with many flocking there to have a Guinness inside its famous walls. Temple Bar, the bar, dates back to the early 1300s and you cannot miss it cause of its red exterior. Temple Bar, the area, is easy to find as it is alongside the River Liffey in the heart of Dublin and sits close to the Ha’penny Bridge.

Irish Rock Museum

If the craic becomes too much you might want to visit the Irish Rock Museum and discover the lives of many of the rock ’n’ roll superstars of Ireland. And there have been and are many Irish bands – U2, The Cranberries, Thin Lizzy and The Corrs to name a few. Plus there have been and are plenty of Irish singers including Sinead O’Connor, who worked at The Bad Ass Cafe in Temple Bar before she became a famous singer.

Only have one day in Dublin, you can still pack a load into your day to discover Dublin.

Morning – take the Dublin Hop n Hop off Bus

Evening – Walk across Ha’penny Bridge and visit Temple Bar for dinner and drink and good Irish craic.

evening – head back to Temple Bar

afternoon – head to Phoenix Park and Dublin Zoo.
Finish the day with some shopping on Grafton Street before saying goodbye to Dublin.

Best Time to Visit Dublin

In my opinion, anytime is a great time to visit Dublin. However, if you are thinking of the ‘best’ weather time to visit Dublin, you would be looking at the end of summer, usually in August and September. These warmer months bring a lot of tourists so expect to pay more for accommodation and other services at this time.

Winter is a magical time to visit Dublin. It can be very cold and you will need to have heavier and warmer clothes to keep you warm. But there is still plenty to see and do in Dublin at this time. Some people don’t worry about the weather and just go to enjoy different events such as St. Patricks Day on 14 March. And as I said, anytime is a good time to visit Dublin.

How to Get to Dublin

Getting to Dublin is a breeze as it is well serviced by air, bus, train and ferry.

How to Get Around Dublin

Many of the sights though are in short walking distance from each other in the heart of the city. This is good news because you will be able to walk around Dublin to see all the sites of Dublin. However, if you don’t want to walk all the time, Dublin has two tram lines, a good train service and an extensive bus network.

As mentioned, when I visit a new city I like to get a ticket on the Hop-on Hop-off bus tour of that city. This is because it takes me to all the best sites, provides me with a commentary including tips and the history of the place and allows me to get on and off at places I want to spend more time. If you prefer to get around on public transport and have entrance fees to sites included, check out the Dublin Go City Pass. With one of these passes you can enter some 31 tourist spots in Dublin. The pass is available for 1, 2, 3 or 5 days making it perfect for any length of trip.

How long is long enough to spend in Dublin?

How long you spend in Dublin will depend on your trip. You can see a lot of Dublin in one day however, if you can, I would suggest a minimum of at least 2 days to see and do what Dublin has to offer. If you can afford longer, then maybe up to a week. If you are coming on an Irish working holiday visa then you will have up to one year to get to know the city!
