You’ve arrived at your accommodation in desperate need of a shower and open your bag to a sweet smelling smell. And find, OH NO, your shampoo bottle has leaked through your clothes and bag. Solution. Travel with solid toiletries for travel! Don’t know about them? Let me explain.

Like you, I have opened my bag to find a toiletry has leaked. And it is so annoying. And with the amount of travel I do, it has happened quite a few times because I don’t want to arrive in a new place and have to buy toiletries again. So I travel with half empty toiletry bottles! But I don’t have to anymore, because I have discovered solid toiletries that do a good a job as my favourites! They are a game changer for travel.

 

What Are Solid Travel Toiletries?

 

Solid toiletries are well, toiletries that are solid. They are a mess-free alternative to liquid counterparts.

You have probably thought of soap as being the only solid travel toiletry around.  But a lot of liquid products are products solid for travel. As well as the obvious soap bar, think about solid toothpaste, face creams, shampoo and conditioner. Keep reading to work out which solid toiletries might work best for you for you next trip. 

 

Pros and Cons of Solid Travel Toiletries

 

As with everything, there are pros and cons. So what are the advantages and disadvantages of traveling with solid toiletries.

 

Pros of Solid Travel Toiletries

 

• The biggest advantage of solid travel toiletries I think is they take up less space in your bag and help you to pack lighter. And this is necessary, particularly when flying as we are often limited by weight as to how much we can take on our travels. 
• Speaking of airlines, getting through the airport security should be easier. You shouldn’t have to take them out of your bag like you do with liquids.
• Solid travel toiletries are compact and save space. With more space you will have more room to pack other items with the space you are saving by not travelling with bottles of liquid.
• Solid toiletries are concentrated products that don’t need storing in bottles that you will throw away so helps to reduce your carbon footprint. The packaging they come in are usually recyclable boxes or containers so there is less waste going into landfill and the ocean. 
• Products are made from essentials oils and other organic matter rather than harsh chemicals. 
• Save money using solid toiletries as they are often more concentrated and last longer. 
• Avoid disasters from liquid products leaking in your luggage. Say goodbye to ruined clothes.

Best Way to Carry Your Solid Toiletries

 

You will notice when the solid toiletry bars get wet or extremely hot, they melt and can be like soft melted butter. Keeping them dry and cool is essential. To do this, so they travel well with you, here are my best tips:

• Keep your solid toiletries in an airtight container such as a small tin or a Ziplock bag or lunch bag. I like the lunch bag myself as they move to any shape.
• Let the bar air dry before you pack them. This allows them to harden.
• Keep them dry and cool is essential. 

 

Are You Ready to Travel with Solid Toiletries?

 

Solid travel toiletries didn’t sound overly nice when I first heard about them. I thought, how could a hard bar of shampoo wash my hair the way a liquid could? But I tried them and now I’m a convert. I admit, I don’t use them all the time. I do use them while traveling and once I am back in my ‘home base’ or staying in one place for a while I often revert to my old liquid toiletry favourites! What to Pack for a City Weekend Away

 

Weekend Bag

 

The first thing on this packing list is the bag you will take with you away on your weekend getaway. You have two options – a duffle bag or a backpack.

 

Duffle Bag

I like duffle bags because they are versatile and soft and are perfect for a 2-3 day trip to a city for a weekend break. Soft means I can push them into my transport, like airline overhead lockers or a packed trunk of a car. And they are versatile because I can take a duffle bag on other trips. If you don’t have a duffle bag, here’s some recommendations.

 

Backpack

Of course you can take a small backpack if you prefer on your city escape. As the name suggests, they are easily carried on your back. Different to a duffle bag. Do ensure your chosen bag meats any required travel sizing – like on planes, they have a carry on size limit. Also, consider having a waterproof duffel bag or backpack in case you caught in the rain on your weekend city break. If you don’t have a small backpack, here’s some recommendations.

Packing Cubes and Wet Dry Bags

 

Packing cubes are great to help you categorise your things you take travelling. Going away for a weekend city break may not require a whole set of packing cubes, but one or two may be useful. One for clean clothes and one for wet/dirty clothes. Wet Dry Bags are great if your luggage gets wet. You can put your wet things into a wet dry bag to keep them away from dry things.

Your clothing will be influenced by the weather of the city you are weekending in. If the weather will be hot, you won’t need as much as if you were headed to cold weather.

What to Pack for a City Weekend Escape Pro Packing Tips

 

Tip 1: Pack Light

Regardless of your trip’s length, pack light. You are only going for a couple of days and don’t need to take the kitchen sink.

Tip 2: Roll Your Clothes

I have always found if you roll your clothes tightly, you can fit more in your bag. Plus rolling seems to create less creases in your clothes.

Sunscreen is extremely important to protect your skin. But did you know that it can cause damage to our planet’s reefs? On a recent visit to ’The Great Barrier Reef’ off the coast of Queensland, Australia I was asked “Are you wearing reef safe sunscreen?”. To which I grabbed the bottle out of my bag and began to read the information on the bottle because I really didn’t know. Lucky, it was reef safe sunscreen, because without it they said I couldn’t go in the water. This is because when sunscreen washes off your skin it mixes with the water and can contribute to coral bleaching. This is why, you should be travelling with reef-safe sunscreen. Particularly if you plan to go in the water because we all want to save the planet right?

 

About Coral Reefs

 

Coral reef’s are often called the ‘rainforests of the sea’ and for good reason. They produce half of the Earth’s oxygen and absorb nearly one-third of the world’s carbon dioxide in the ocean. But coral reefs are also beautiful, with vibrant colours that also provide a home to an abundant of marine life. They are found all over the world and lots of people visit them every year to swim and snorkel amongst them.

 

What is Coral Bleaching?

 

Coral bleaching occurs in corals when they become stressed by condition changes in light, temperature or nutrients. The changes can cause the coral to expel the symbiotic algae living in their tissues, causing them to turn completely white. Coral bleaching also limits coral’s growth and development, meaning, it can’t reproduce the way it should.

 

What is Causing Corals to Bleach?

 

Warm Oceans

 

With global warming, water temperatures have been rising. When water is too warm, corals will expel the algae and start turning white. When a coral bleaches, it isn’t dead, just really stressed, and it can come back in the right environment, but yes, the more stress can lead to the coral dying.

 

Non Reef-Safe Sunscreen Chemicals

 

As corals are living things, they suck in nutrients to survive. They draw in what is around them. When you hit the water your sunscreen starts to wash off and mixes with the water. When the chemicals in the sunscreen get into the water, they can cause damage to the coral by adding to the bleaching process. They can also be toxic for marine life. This is why reef-safe sunscreen is necessary, particularly when swimming or snorkelling in and around reefs.

 

How is Reef-Safe Sunscreen Different?

 

There are two things making reef-safe sunscreen different. Firstly, studies have shown three common UV-blocking chemicals, oxybenzone, octocrylene and octinoxate are the culprits in sunscreen causing coral bleaching. As a result, sunscreens containing these have been banned in a number of countries including Hawaii, the island nation of Palau, the US Virgin Islands and other countries. And scientists are now producing reef-safe sunscreens. A reef-safe sunscreen is a sunscreen free of these chemical ingredients that are known to help bleaching coral.

Secondly, the particles in a sunscreen must be non-nano. This means the particle size of the sunscreen must be above 100 nanometers. If the particle size of the sunscreen is below 100 nanometers, the coral can absorb the particles. This is harmful to them, stresses them, and causing the coral bleaching.

 

Reef-Safe Sunscreens

 

Your skin is your biggest organ, and it needs protecting from the harsh elements of the sun. To help protect you, you should wear sunscreen, but reef-safe sunscreen. Things to look for in reef-safe sunscreen:

1. Sunscreen without the chemicals – oxybenzone, octinoxate, or octocrylene
2. Avoid spray sunscreen as they contain particles smaller than 100 nanometers.
3. Choose sunscreen that has a ‘reef-safe’ label or says ‘reef-friendly’.

Beginners Guide to Ski Clothing for Your Ski Holiday

 

If you are similar to me and grown up near a beach you may not have thought about going skiing or snowboarding. And definitely not thought about ski clothing. Then in the midst of winter a friend suggests a holiday in the snow. This sounded like a great idea at the time, until you find yourself stuck outside in sub-zero temperatures freezing your ass off because you packed unsuitable clothing. Lucky for you, I learnt this valuable lesson from my very first trip to snow. Now, I pass on my wisdom in this beginner’s guide to ski clothing so you will know how to dress for skiing and snowboarding, no matter the country you choose to ski or snowboard in. This will help you ensure you stay warm and dry allowing you to focus on having fun in the snow on your ski or snowboard holiday.

What Should I Wear Skiing or Snowboarding?

 

What I have learnt is that a good ski or snowboard outfit boils down to two things. Firstly, wearing layers and secondly, wearing appropriate accessories. You will need while skiing or snowboarding a minimum of three layers – a base layer, a mid layer and a waterproof layer. Then add accessories of ski socks, gloves, headwear and eyewear and you will be all set to have fun in the snow, even on the coldest of days. Then add in what you will be getting up to while in the snow. Are you hitting the slopes to ski or snowboard? I ask because there is a difference between ski and snowboard jackets and ski and snowboard pants. I cover the differences further on in this post, but first, let’s talk about the three layers of clothing you need for your holiday in the snow.

 

Three Layers of Dress for Skiing or Snowboarding

 

1st Layer – Base Layer – Layer Closest to Your Body

 

The first piece of clothing you will want for your ski trip is a good set of base layers. You may be thinking thermal underwear will do, but they won’t. Thermal underwear is made to keep you warm but what you really need is a base layer that will keep you dry, and keeping dry will in turn, keep you warm. The base layer you need for a holiday in the snow will be made of either synthetic materials such as polyester o of natural fibres like merino wool. Both these materials are great wicking materials. Basically, they transport sweat off your skin so it can evaporate unlike materials such as cotton as it absorbs sweat and allows it to sit on your skin and then you will start to freeze. So choose a base layer of synthetic or natural fibres.

The natural fibres like bamboo and merino are more expensive than their polyester relatives however, to keep you comfortable so you enjoy your holiday in the snow will be well worth the extra dollars spent.

Tip: Check if you already own a base layer in your wardrobe, you may be surprised. I often wear my long yoga leggings to the snow. Friends who run, have worn their running leggings.

2nd Layer

 

Most only wear a mid-layer on the top half of their body. This is due to your legs doing most of the work while skiing and snowboarding and thus being warmer than the top half. Therefore, a base layer and top waterproof area on your legs should keep you dry and warm on the bottom half of your body. But you need to keep the top half warm also so on top of your base layer you will want to add a thin fleece or wool jumper. Best to be thin, as thin layers trap air between them keeping you warmer than a thick jumper. Once again, it is best to avoid cotton made clothing but choose a good wicking material mid-layer.

On very cold days some skiers and snowboarders wear a puffer vest or jacket for extra warmth. Best they are made from either synthetic filling or down. I must say, I have a puffer jacket which I mostly wear when I’m just walking around the village.

 

3rd Layer – Outer Layer

 

Lastly, you need a weatherproof outer layer over your base and middle layers to keep the elements out. Have a good quality ski jacket and salopettes – aka ski pants or snowboard trousers. These will keep the snow, sleet, rain and wind out and help to keep you warm while you are skiing or snowboarding.

 

The Difference Between Ski and Snowboard Clothing

 

The two items of ski clothing that differ between skiing and snowboard are the jackets and pants. The difference between ski and snowboard jackets is ski jackets tend to be slimmer-fitting while snowboard jackets are looser fitting. This is because snowboarders use many movements to keep themselves balanced and thus require a baggier fit, particularly at the back. Plus, snowboard jackets tend to be more colourful than ski jackets.

The other difference is between ski and snowboard pants. Once again, snowboard pants tend to be baggier to allow for crouching and the varied leg movements for aerial movements. Plus, they have extra padding found at the keens and rear for those unexpected falls.

 

How to Choose Your Outer Layer?

 

When choosing your outer layer you will come across waterproofing and breathability terminology. Whether you opt for a shell jacket or a jacket with some insulation, ensure this outer layer has a minimum of 5,000 (5K) of both breathability and waterproofing. You can get outer layer clothing with 10,000 (10k) and upwards which will provide even better weatherproofing from the elements. I have found people who spend a lot of time in the snow, unlike myself who might go for 1-2 weeks per year, often prefer the higher rating for their outer wear.

Tip: Your ski pant trouser leg and gaiters should go over the cuff of your ski boot to keep the snow out. Have a jacket with lots of pockets to put things you may need for the day – phone, tissues, finger warmers, water bottle, money.

 

Kids Clothing for Skiing and Snowboarding

 

The same principles can be used for kitting out kids for skiing and snowboarding. Though kids often have bright coloured ski and snowboard clothes so you can distinguish and see them easier in the snow. Kids ski clothing is usually just a smaller version of adults clothing.

 

Ski and Snowboard Accessories

 

To add to your three layers of ski and snowboard clothing, there are some other essential accessories that should be included. Let’s start from the top and work our way down to the feet.

 

Headwear – A Beanie or a Helmet

There was a time when wearing a helmet was a big controversy. But like when riding a bike, helmets can play a big safety part by providing protection during falls and accidents. I’m not saying you will ski into a tree or fall on a rock, but knowing you have that protection can help you against serious injury. If you decide that a helmet isn’t for you, then a beanie will keep your head nice and warm. There are plenty of beanies to choose from and is a personal choice. If you do decide to wear a helmet you can hire one when you rent skis, ski boots and / or snowboard from the ski rental at the resort. Check out these helmets.

 

Eyewear – Goggles and Sunglasses

 

If you are new to skiing and won’t be going very fast then sunglasses will probably do the job. However, ski goggles are made with special lenses to help you see on ‘low-light’ days plus have straps so the goggles sit comfortably against your face. Therefore, you don’t have to adjust them like you might with your sunglasses. And this will keep your hands free. Some ski hire shops will rent goggles if you don’t want to buy your own. Gloves and Mittens

 

Gloves and / or mittens are needed to keep your hands warm. Without them, your hands can seize up and you can end up with chill blains, so definitely have a pair of waterproof gloves. I do prefer gloves over mittens as I find gloves are more versatile. I can still use my fingers to do Important things like unzip and zip up zippers to go to the toilet. Or to fix bindings, etc. or to help someone else who may need help with their equipment.

 

Hip and Bum Protection

 

Moving on down your body in this ski clothing beginners guide, I come to the mid-section, or bum and hips. Bum and Hip protection isn’t absolutely necessary for your ski and snowboard gear but if you plan on doing plenty of jumping and going fast which may lead to falls, then having hip and bum protection may be very useful. Socks

 

The only other important item in your ski or snowboard wardrobe should be your socks. Not any old sock will do when you are skiing or snowboarding, but socks designed to go under boots.

Tip: Don’t wear really thick or cotton socks as they can absorb sweat and give you cold and heavy feet. really thick, or wearing two pairs of socks can cause a lot of friction in your boot and give you blisters. Best to stick to ski socks such as these.

 

What Ski Clothing Do I Need to Buy?

 

As a newbie skier or snowboarder I suggest you only buy your base layer and socks. Nobody will want to wear somebody else’s socks or base layer! And nobody would lend them either! All the other layers and accessories you could rent. After your first trip you will have a better idea of exactly what you need and can buy accordingly.

 

Where to Buy Ski and Snowboard Clothing?

 

I wouldn’t suggest you buy any clothing or accessories in the resorts unless you really have to because they will be very expensive. There are stores in the ski resorts where you can purchase or rent gear if you didn’t bring it. But there are plenty of off-mountain stores where you could purchase or rent clothing to bring with you. Whether it is your first time skiing or snowboarding or you have been hitting the slopes for years, you will need to pack for your trip. Whether it be for a week of fun or a work and ski season in the snow, you will need some essential items to pack. So here is my guide as to what to pack for a ski trip.

 

Ski and Snowboard Gear

 

Unless you are a die-hard skiier or snowboarder you probably don’t have a pair of skis or a snowboard. It is good to know that you can hire these items.

If skiing, you will need skies, boots and poles.
To snowboard, you will need a snowboard.

 

Ski Clothing Essentials

 

Waterproof ski jacket (minimum waterproof rating 10.000mm)
Waterproof ski pants/Board pants (minimum waterproof rating 10.000mm)
Mid layer shirt: long sleeve sweatshirt, woollen sweater, lightweight down jacket

TIP: If you are knew to skiing and / or snowboarding you might want to take some protective gear such as wrist guards, knee pads and protective shorts/bum pads – just in case you fall and land on these areas.

Apres Ski and Off the Slopes Clothing

 

As well as your outside ski and snowboard clothing, consider your indoor or apres ski clothing. I have found inside the ski lodges, restaurants and cafes to be toasty warm, sometimes too toasty warm. So you definitely won’t be needing to wear three layers inside, unless you will be sweating up a storm on the dance floor! Types of clothes to pack for apres ski will depend on the type of apres ski you are interested in doing. Do you plan to have quiet nights by a roaring fire or party till the early hours in the resort bar? More casual gear is fine to wear around the fire while pack your party gear if you plan to be going out at night. Check out the following items to include in your luggage for your snow holiday.

Wheels don’t roll in the snow so your luggage should be easy to carry through the snow. Possibly as backpack or a duffle bag – but this will depend on how long you are staying.

Love the snow? What about doing a season where you would live and work in a resort. There are many different types of jobs you could do ranging from selling ski lift passes, working in a lodge to being a ski or snowboard instructor. Where would you like to work and ski? Australia? New Zealand? Japan? Europe? Canada? or perhaps the UK?

 

So you are going on a summer holiday in Europe. You’ve planned the perfect European itinerary. Your travel and accommodation is all booked. You just need to pack now. But what do you pack for a summer in Europe?

I’ve travelled through Europe a number of times and in all seasons and I have learnt what to pack and what to leave behind for a European holiday. To make it easier for you, I have put together the ultimate packing list for Europe in summer from my first hand experiences. It’s designed to help you choose the essentials for travelling Europe in summer. The summer months being June, July and August. So let’s get packing for a European summer holiday.

What to Wear in Europe in Summer – Your Style Guide for Europe

 

Before you begin to pack for your European summer break, there are things that may influence your packing. These include where in Europe you are travelling, how long you are travelling Europe for, the type of clothes worn by Europeans and how to not look like a tourist in Europe.

 

Which Countries are You Visiting?

 

Europe is a large continent and each country can have different weather. Yep, it can change on a day-to-day basis. However, the good news is that Europe is basically always hot during the summer months – so you can leave all the heavy sweaters and coats at home! Unless you plan to go high into the Alps on your European holiday and then you might need some winter clothing items. But in general, packing for a European summer holiday is different to a packing list for Europe in winter.

Now Europe is a continent comprising of some 40 or so countries. They are classified into six geographical regions – Southern, Southeastern, Western, Central, Eastern and Northern. Each zone can have different weather on the same day. Countries in Southern Europe, like Spain, Greece and Italy are closer to equator than Northern Europe countries like Sweden, Norway and Finland and thus are warmer during European summer months.

So the first thing to consider is which country or countries you will be visiting. If you are visiting more Southern European countries which are closer to the equator then you would think you wouldn’t need to pack wintery clothing, that you would if you were visiting Northern European countries. So keep this in mind.

 

How Long Are You Visiting Europe?

 

The next thing to consider is how long you will be visiting Europe for. Are you having a weekend break in a European city such as Paris, Rome or Stockholm? Then you will only need to pack clothes for the weekend appropriate for the city in the European area you are visiting. You would expect to wear more summery clothes in Rome in Southern Europe than you would expect to wear in Stockholm in Northern Europe.

Are you having a 2 week, 1 month or more European holiday? And which countries? You will need to pack clothes to last for your holiday.

 

Europeans Dress Fashionably

 

Europeans have the reputation for being fashionable people who dress nicely. After all, Paris and Milan are known fashion capitals. None of this walking around in shorts, sweatpants and sneakers! Unless you are off to the beach or the gym!

 

Blend in to be Safe

 

When planning your Europe packing list for summer, so you don’t look like a tourist, it is best to dress to blend in. You have less chances of being targeted if you do. I recommend you dress fashionably, especially in the larger cities. Also, as you are travelling around Europe in the summer time, there can be some very hot long days and so these clothes not only need to be fashionable, they need to be lightweight and comfortable also.

 

Your Europe Summer Outfits Tips

 

My biggest tips for packing for a European summer trip are:

 

1. Your Europe summer outfits should be clothes you can mix and match, so you can wear them more than once.
2. Take lightweight, comfortable and fashionable clothes.
3. Choose clothes made from fabrics that breath, yet dry quickly.
4. Wear layers – if its hot you can take them off and if cold, you can put something on.
5. Consider the different European cultures on your packing list for Europe. Some cultures require women to cover up before entering into cathedrals and mosques.
6. Think about which countries you will be visiting and how long for to help you decide on clothes to take to Europe.

 

How to Carry Your Things around Europe? – Your Luggage Guide for Europe

 

Luggage is very important to carry all your items through Europe. And the type of luggage you take can make or break your trip. You probably think that is a big statement, and yes, it is, but it is true. Taking the wrong type of luggage on your European vacation can really hinder you.

To choose the right luggage for you, consider the type of travelling you will be doing. Are you backpacking through Europe or going on an organised tour? In general, you have two choices – Travel Backpack or a Suitcase with wheels.

Both of these luggage options have pros and cons. A travel backpack is far easier to carry around particularly if you are getting on and off transport often. Ensure you get the right size as there is nothing worse than having an uncomfortable backpack on your back. A wheeled suitcase is also a good option but difficult to pull along when you are on the move over the many cobblestoned roads and long-winded European staircases. Keep a look out for the hybrid backpack and suitcase – it is basically a backpack with wheels – best of both worlds. Check out this hybrid backpack.

• Travel Wallet for your documents.
• Day Pack or Cross Body Bag – one of these will be useful for carrying things around for a day of sightseeing.

Let’s Pack Your Bag for Europe

 

I’ve divided the following into what to wear in Europe for ladies summer and what to wear in Europe for men summer for your convenience. As well as toiletries and medicines, electronic travel essentials, other useful things to pack for Europe and paperwork. Whether you are backpacking through Europe solo, with your kids or partner, or going on an organised tour, my packing list for Europe in summer is adaptable for many types of travelling through Europe.

 

Europe Summer Packing List: Womens Clothes and Shoes

 

• Dresses and skirts  – bring at least 2-3 dresses and/or skirts. Dresses that are casual that can be worn during the day, yet able to be warn at night. Maxi dresses are great for this.
• Lightweight pants – a pair of lightweight or linen pants for those days when it is a little cooler or for going out.
• Leggings – 2 pairs. Great for when you are travelling, exercising or relaxing for a day at the hostel or hotel 
• Jeans – a pair will be useful for when the weather isn’t so stiflingly hot. Plus, if you like to wear them, wear them.
• Shorts – 1 or 2 pairs of shorts will come in handy for those days spent visiting beach areas. I suggest avoid wearing them around the European cities and wear dresses, skirts and lightweight pants. Avoid really short shorts as you may not be allowed entry into some religious buildings if you’re not covered up.
• Shirts/tops/t-shirts – I recommend bringing 3-4 tops to mix and match with skirts, pants and shorts.
• Sweater/Jumper/Hoodie  – Pack at least 1 long sleeve sweater or hoodie for chilly summer nights and air-conditioned places.
• Waterproof lightweight Jacket  – Bring a waterproof light jacket. Some parts of Europe (especially Northern Europe) might be cool in the summer even in the daytime. And it can rain anytime. I love my jack from The NorthFace.
• Comfortable walking shoes  – A must for sightseeing and continuous walking around streets. And for those hikes. Depending on your outfit you might want either casual sandals or comfortable flats or fashionable sneakers. A word on stilettos. European cities have many cobbled streets and unfortunately stilettos and cobbled streets can lead to trips and falls. It you want to wear heals, wear wedges or a thick heel that will give you some support on the uneven cobbles.
• Dressier sandals or shoes – 1 or 2 pairs for going out at night. Maybe a pair of platform shoes or stilettos if that’s what you like to wear out.
• Thongs/Flip-flops – I recommend taking one pair to wear to the beach or to the shower blocks. I suggest not wearing while sightseeing as they don’t provide much support for your feet and you will be walking on many cobblestoned streets. A more supportive sandal will be much better.
• Underwear and socks – depending on your length of time you are visiting Europe for I suggest bring at least 7 pairs of underwear, yes, one for every day, and 3-4 pairs of sox. Maybe 2-3 bras.
• Swimsuit – 1 pair unless your are spending many days at the beach and want to change outfits.
• Sarong – these are so versatile. You can wear it to the beach, to the shower blocks and to wrap around your clothes to cover up in a church.
• Nightwear – pyjamas
• Scarf –  A lightweight scarf will keep you warm on chilly summer nights or places with too much air-conditioning.  A scarf is also useful when visiting churches or cathedrals which require women to cover their heads and or shoulders.

 

Europe Summer Packing List: Mens Clothes and Shoes

 

• Lightweight pants  –  bring at least 2 pairs of lightweight pants for sightseeing and to wear out to restaurants or bars.
• Jeans – a pair will be useful for when the weather isn’t so stiflingly hot. Plus, if you like to wear them, wear them.
• Shorts – a pair or two of nice shorts for when visiting beach areas.
• Shirts/tops/t-shirts –  I recommend men bring at least 4 short sleeve shirts, tops or t-shirts.
• Sweater/Jumper  – Pack at least 1 long sleeve sweater or hoodie for chilly summer nights and air-conditioned places.
• Waterproof lightweight Jacket  – Bring a waterproof light jacket. Some parts of Europe (especially Northern Europe) might be cool in the summer even in the daytime. And it can rain anytime. I love my jacket from The NorthFace.

TIP: Don’t wear new shoes unless you have warn them in. You don’t want blisters on your first day! But if you do, I hope you have a first aid kit with plasters/band aids.

 

Packing for Europe: Toiletries and Medicines

 

• Toothpaste and Toothbrush
• Hair Brush and / or comb
• Cleanser and moisturiser
• Soap
• Shampoo and Conditioner – or shampoo bar
• Deodorant
• Feminine hygiene products
• Baby wipes – if you can’t shower, these will help keep you fresh
• Lip Balm
• Microfibre Travel Towel
• Medicines you require for the length of your trip.

 

Packing for Europe: Electronic Travel Essentials

 

• Mobile phone – one of these will not only allow you to keep in contact with peeps and take photos but you can download some very useful apps to help you travel. Apps for booking hostels or hotels or a table at a restaurant. Plus, a European eSim.
• Waterproof Smart Phone Bag.
• Dry Bag for wet clothes. I often use a plastic bag as my dry bag was stolen.
• European Travel Adaptor for your electronics.
• External Battery Charger or Power Bank – to charge your electronics while on the go.
• Camera/photography gear.
• Laptop Computer – if you are a digital nomad and working online as you travel Europe you will need the right tech gear.

 

Europe Packing List: Other Useful Things to Pack for Europe

 

• Sunglasses – European countries are very sunny during the summer months so sunglasses are a must! Lucky, if your forget to take a pair you could buy a pair!
• Hat or cap – If you are spending a lot of time outdoors, don’t forget to bring a hat or cap.
• Sun Protection – Europe in summer is hot and sunny and if you are outside sightseeing most days ensure you have some sun protection. There is nothing worse being burnt to a cinder from sightseeing. You will be uncomfortable for a few days! Lucky if you forget to bring some, you can easily find sunscreen in Europe to buy.
• Reusable water bottle – one of these is a great way to save money on expensive bottled water. It will help you stay hydrated having access to water.
• Insect Repellent – yes, unfortunately, those pesky critters are even in Europe.
• First Aid kit
• Head Lamp or Torch – one of these is great for rummaging through your backpack at night and also for those times you need to go to the toilet in the middle of the night!
• Sink Plug or Stopper
• Anti-theft locks – to keep your things safe in your accommodation and on your body
• Sealable Lunch Bags
• Laundry powder and travel clothes line
• Tissues
• Toilet Paper
• Face Masks
• Antibacterial wipes and / or hand sanitizer
• Blanket – a small blanket will come in handy if you travelling through Europe in summer on overnight trains and buses. It can get a little cool sometimes overnight.
• A neck pillow will come in handy for those long train, bus and plane journeys.
• Fold up umbrella or raincoat for those unexpected showers.
• Travel Journal and pen – if you want to write about your European trip, which many of us do, add a travel journal to your summer Europe packing list or perhaps start a travel blog.

 

Packing List Essentials for European Travel: Paperwork and Financial Stuff

 

• Passport and visas. Ensure to have the appropriate visas in your passport. Read up on the European Shengen Visa here.
• Cash, debit and credit cards.
• Drivers license and international drivers license if planning on driving.
• COVID vaccine card and/or negative COVID test (if required).
* Travel Insurance.
* Have accommodation booking confirmations and entrance ticket confirmations printed out or in your electronic wallet.

I suggest you lay everything out on the floor and look at each item to ensure you will need it for your European travels. Packing light will help you travel better.

Know how to plan, prepare and pack for a successful hike

 

In my opinion, hiking is one of the best forms of exercise and therapy for my body and soul! I’ve been hiking for years from a few hours to a couple of days during my world travels. And I’ve learnt the hard way sometimes about my choices of hiking gear. In this post I’m sharing everything you need to know to plan, prepare, and pack for a hike to help you hit the trail running. If you’re like me and enjoy hiking and choose to make hiking part of your work and travel adventures, then read on.

Why Hike?

 

Hiking has a number of benefits. It is a great way to improve your:

• Physical health – yes, hiking has been proven to help build your muscle strength and your cardiovascular system. 
• Mental well-being – keeping active helps reduce stress and can help you manage anxiety and depression. Hiking also lets you burn off steam on your own if you’ve had a bad day!
• Connection to the great outdoors – hiking is also a great way to connect with the great outdoors and enjoy some fabulous scenery at the same time. And enjoy that fresh air!

 

Why Prepare For Your Hike?

 

To some, hiking can be as simple as choosing a trail and start hiking. Well, for short hikes of an hour or two that might be ok, but there is a little more to it than that, particularly when the hike is longer and in extreme weather conditions. Let me share my info on how to plan and prepare for a hike and the hiking essentials you should take with you.

 

How to Plan a Hike

 

To ensure your hike goes smoothly, spend a little time preparing for your hike.

 

Choose Your Hike

 

The first thing to do is to choose your hike. Now there are many hikes out there ranging in different lengths, fitness levels and terrains. Only you know what you are capable of, so choose the hike that suits you. No point hiking Mount Fuji, in Japan, if you aren’t fit enough! And what about the length of the hike, do you just want to hike for a few hours, a whole day or longer. Once you have chosen your hike, you can begin to prepare.

 

Things to Consider About Your Chosen Hike

 

Pack the Essentials for Your Hike

 

• Do You Need a Permit for this Hike?

Some hikes may need a permit. Find out if your chosen hike needs one. There is nothing worse than turning up at the starting point only to find out you need a permit to get in!

 

• How Long Will The Hike Take?

While planning your hike, find out details like the length of the hike and how long is suggested it will take. Depending on your own fitness the hike may or may not take longer. You will need to ensure you have the time to undertake the hike so you can appreciate it to its fullest. Hiking is not just about running to the top of the mountain for great views – you need to enjoy what is around you and this may take a little extra time.

 

• Getting To The Trail and Parking

Include in the length of time for the hike the time to get there. How far away is the hike from where you are and will you be walking or driving there or will public transport drop you off at the starting point. Whichever way you choose to get there factor in this time, and the time to get home after the hike. Also consider times you may need to leave to get to the hike, particularly if you want to see a sunrise!

 

Preparing for Your Hike

 

Once you have chosen your hike and worked out the logistics, it is time to prepare yourself and your gear. Take some time, preferably the day before to do the following to prepare for your hike. You don’t want to leave preparations to the last minute because you just might find something has broken and needs repair or you may have run out of batteries! Preparation is key for a great hike.

 

• Familiarise Yourself With Your Trail Map

 

Get to know the trail before you hike it. Either purchase a physical copy or download a copy of the map. Print it off if you want and study it. It will show you many things including the topography so you know where there are elevated areas, descents and challenging climbs. Also if there are any junctions on the trail you need to be aware of so you don’t take a wrong turn. Take note if there are any sources of water or food on or near the trail as this will determine on how much water and food you might need to take.

 

• Water

 

Having enough water can be a critical part of your hike. A general rule is to drink 2 cups or .5 litres per hour per person while hiking. Without enough water you can become dehydrated which can lead to headaches, dizziness and possibly disorientation. You don’t want these things to happen as you won’t enjoy the hike plus you could have an accident. I would suggest you start hydrating yourself the night before you hike – not too much that you need the bathroom all night. I often take two collapsable water bottles with me on my hikes and sometimes a water filter in case I fill up my water bottle in a stream. Both my collapsable water bottle and water filter are super light making them easy to carry in my backpack.

 

• Check the Weather

 

Before you begin to pack your daypack for your hike, check the weather as you may need to cancel the hike or adjust your gear. There’s nothing worse than hiking in adverse conditions, you need to think of your safety!

 

• Share Your Plans With Someone

 

Before you leave on your hike, share your plans with someone. This could be a trusted friend, family member or the receptionist at your accommodation. You could even put it on your social media feed – but don’t forget to let people know when you have returned safely.

 

What to Pack for a Hike

 

This is probably the most important part of your hike as the gear you don’t take can really interfere whether you have a good or bad hike. Here is my suggested packing list of items to pack for a hike and you will need to adjust the items and amounts depending on the length and type of hike you will be doing.

 

• Hiking Day Pack

 

The first thing you need is to have an appropriate hiking day pack. It should be comfortable and fit you well. The last thing you need is an uncomfortable day pack that doesn’t fit you and annoys you all hike. Most daypacks arena the range of 20-30L and have enough room to store everything you will need for the hike. 

 

Items to Pack for Hiking

• Water in water bottles and a water filter
• Snacks (trail mix) and meals
• Sunscreen
• Hat
• Sunglasses
• Lip Balm
• Cell Phone and a solar powered Powerbank (read my post on how to choose the best Powerbank here)
• Map unless you have downloaded one onto your phone
• Torch if you are hiking in the dark – early morning to see a sunrise or late evening after sunset
• Trekking Poles – not for everybody but they can be useful to take the pressure of your joints.
• Toilet kit – if nature calls you will need some toilet paper or wipes stashed in a small plastic, sealable bag – and a small trowel to dig a hole.

 

• Safety Supplies

 

It’s better to be safe than sorry.

• Headlamp if hiking in the dark
• First aid kit – just basic with band aids, antiseptic wipes, tweezers, pain relief, anti-itch cream, cream for inset bites, etc.
• Gear repair kit – duct tape and ties and a pocket knife  will come in handy when making repairs on gear and equipment.
• Waterproof matches or a light

 

• Items to Pack for Overnight or Longer Hikes

 

• Small stove is camping overnight

What to Wear on Your Hike

 

What you wear on your hike will depend on the time of year and weather conditions. Here are my basics that I wear hiking.

 

• Basic Hiking Clothes

 

• Shorts or lightweight hiking pants – TIP: if you will be scrambling over rocks and crawling along on your bottom, the older the clothes the better. I usually wear an old pair of leggings if I know I am doing this!
• Quick drying shirt made of lightweight synthetic fabrics that will keep you cool.
• Warm layer such as a fleece jumper.
• Quick drying/breathable underwear.
• Hiking socks made of merino wool for wicking sweat
• Sturdy Hiking Boots or Shoes.

 

• Extra Hiking Clothes Dependent on Weather and Season

 

• Rain jacket and a rain cover for your backpack.

How to do your laundry while travelling – visit a laundromat is one option

 

You probably haven’t thought about doing laundry while travelling, I know I don’t think about it until I actually have to do it! But you should give it some consideration during the planning of your trip. If you are just travelling for a week you can get away with not washing during your trip. A holiday any longer than a week, you should consider your options to get your clothes washed. While doing laundry while travelling may sound annoying, frustrating and so NOT exciting, it doesn’t have to be. From my years of travelling I have uncovered some tricks and tips that I’m going to share here to help doing laundry while travelling less of a chore.

Why do Laundry While Travelling?

 

I think this question has a pretty obvious answer. if your clothes get dirty or smelly you will want to freshen them up, right? But you may also be thinking “Why would I want to do laundry while on holiday?’. Well, it will depend on how long you are travelling for and how many clothes you have with you. If you are holidaying for only a week, as I mentioned before, you could get away with not washing. It is when your holiday becomes longer than a week that you will need to freshen them up. No-one wants to sit next to a smelly person on that long bus or train trip, right? So here are some options to wash your clothes while travelling.

 

Have a Dedicated Laundry Bag for Dirty Clothing

 

This goes without saying, keep your dirty clothes separately from clean clothes. This way, when it is time to do laundry you can find your dirty clothes quickly. I suggest having a specific bag or a packing cube to keep your dirty washing in. This set of packing cubes has a laundry bag included in its set.

Hand Wash Your Clothes in the Sink

 

I have seen many a traveller wash their dirty laundry in the sink at their accommodation. Particularly when they are on a jam packed travel schedule like on a tour. It is a good option if you don’t have much to wash or have the time to wash and want to ensure your smaller items such as underwear, socks and the like are clean. Washing these clothes in the sink, leaving them out to dry overnight and hoping they will be dry in the morning is a good way to save money on doing laundry when travelling. To wash my clothes in the sink in my accommodation I ensure I travel with the following things:

A sink plug is a great addition to any luggage. It is great for sinks where you need to block the flow of water. If you will be doing washing in a sink during your travels, don’t forget a sink plug.

No need to carry liquid laundry detergent these earth friendly biodegradable eco strips will wash your clothes. 

 

Travel Clothes Line

Don’t fight over who is going to throw their washing over the central heating again. This clothes line is easy to carry and easy to hang to let your washing dry.

 

Take Advantage of hostel/hotel Laundry Services

 

If your hostel or hotel has a laundry service, don’t hesitate to use it. Although it can be a little on the expensive side, it can be worth it. By using the service, that usually includes washing, drying, hanging, ironing or folding your clothes you can do something else while your laundry is being done. Generally, the laundry will take about 24 hours to be done so ensure you allow this time in your travel plans so you get your clean clothes back before you check out.

 

Find a Laundromat

 

Simple, find a laundromat in the city you are in and get your clothes washed and dry. Not always as simple as it sounds. First, you need to find a laundromat and that can be hard in a new city where you don’t speak the language. Check out Google Maps to find the nearest laundromat in your area. Typically, public laundromats offer self-service however, sometimes there is staff and you can pay to have them do your laundry for you. The do-it-yourself model of laundromat is cheaper but you will need coins to operate the machines and detergent, like the eco strips mentioned above. You will also need coins for the dryer. The biggest delay by doing washing your clothes in the laundromat is the time. But what is an hour or two out of your day!

 

Book Accommodation with a Washing Machine

 

For a long term stay, an Airbnb or apartment can be a great option to help you do your laundry as it should have a washing machine. Check the listing of services of the property before you book. With access to a washing machine you will be able to wash whenever you want. And having access to the amenities will ensure you will still have a wonderful holiday, doing laundry or not! Pack Clothes that require less Washing and Drying

 

People often say pack cotton clothes because the material breathes better, however, it is not fast drying. You may want to pack clothes made from fabrics that dry quickly and don’t need to be washed often. Or pack clothes that you don’t wash after every wear or two like denim jeans or woollen jumper.

 

Carry and Use a Travel Laundry Wash Bag

 

Travel wash bags are an all-in-one solution to doing your laundry while travelling. They are ideal for small items, like a load of underwear that you can throw in the wash bag, and wash the clothes in the comfort of your hostel or hotel room. A stain remover and a portable mini washing machine. keep your dirty clothes separate to your clean clothes in a laundry bag. Hand washing in the sink is popular so carry a plug, detergent and something to hang your clothes. Another useful item is a stain remover (Tide Pen or Shout Stain Remover Wipes), a portable mini washing machine that you can put in a sink or a collapsable bucket. And don’t forget the detergent (sink Suds).

2. Pole Camping Tents

Hybrid camping tents are semi-freestanding. That means a hybrid tent is the combination of the two types of camping tents described above. These tents come in two parts. The first part features a pole structure to hold them upright, while the other you can stake out making the frame. Hence, hybrid camping tents balance the weather protection and comforts of freestanding tents with pole tents’ lightweight and easy-to-carry aspects. 

But, hybrid tents are more expensive. If you are a first-timer, spending extra cash on a tent may not be possible. Not to mention, hybrid tents are designed specifically for ultralight backpacking. This makes them slightly less durable than other tent types. Finally, if you are traveling into the jungle, setting them up can also be a bit problematic. Not great for beginners – but you won’t be a beginner forever!

Consider Space and Capacity of your Hiking Tent

 

Hiking tents come in all sizes. You can go for a one-person tent if hiking on your own. Or to a tent that can accommodate up to 5 or more people simultaneously. These tents are ideal for larger families and groups. Two-person tents are most common, though, as they can accommodate two sleeping pads, sufficient for couples. Remember, the bigger a tent gets the heavier its size. Therefore, carrying them can become a problem. So choose the hiking tent that will accommodation the number of people hiking.  

 

What Fabric is Best for your Hiking Tent

 

Hiking tents are mostly made of nylon or polyester material. While polyester is more economical, nylon is much sturdier and stronger. It is also waterproof. But the problem with nylon is that it can sag and expand if you expose it to a lot of water. Therefore, if you are hiking in a humid region, a polyester-made tent will be more suitable for your excursion. On the other hand, if you are not expecting much rain, consider going with a Nylon tent instead. 

Many manufacturers add a layer of silicone or polyurethane over their tents. Polyurethane is a heavier material that makes the tent slightly heavier. It can also weaken the fabric resulting in easy tears. Not to forget, polyurethane hydrolyzes over time. This means if you expose a polyurethane-layered tent to rain a lot, it will start spreading an unpleasant odour after some time. In contrast, silicone doesn’t tear or hydrolyze easily.
