In the heart of the majestic Parvati Valley of Himachal Pradesh, India, lies a mystical and enchanting destination known as Kheerganga. For adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers, Kheerganga is a trekking paradise. It offers a unique blend of natural beauty, hot springs and spiritual significance. Nestled at an altitude of around 2,960 meters (9,711 feet), Kheerganga is a trek that promises both physical challenges and spiritual rejuvenation. In this article, guest author will embark on a journey to explore the mesmerizing Kasol Kheerganga trek. Uncovering its natural wonders, cultural significance, and the adventure it offers for you.

The Journey Begins: Kasol – The Gateway to Kheerganga

The journey to Kheerganga commences from the charming village of Kasol. Known for its serene landscapes, laid-back atmosphere, and vibrant Israeli cafes, Kasol serves as the gateway to this trekking adventure. Travelers can reach Kasol by road from Delhi, which is approximately a 12-hour drive. Or by taking a flight to Bhuntar Airport, followed by a scenic drive. The quaint village of Kasol is where most trekkers stock up on supplies and hire guides if needed. Plus, experience the local culture before setting off on the Kheerganga trek.

The Trekking Trail

The Kheerganga trek can be classified as moderately challenging, making it accessible to both novice and experienced trekkers. The journey usually begins at Barshaini, a small village near Kasol. From there, trekkers follow a well-marked trail that leads through lush pine forests, gurgling Parvati River, and picturesque hamlets. The path winds through steep slopes, narrow ridges, and rocky terrain, presenting stunning vistas of the surrounding mountains at every turn. Trekkers often find themselves lost in the breathtaking scenery as they ascend through the natural wonders of the Parvati Valley.

Natural Beauty at Every Step

The Kheerganga trek is not just about reaching the destination; it’s also about embracing the journey. Along the way, trekkers are treated to a visual feast of nature’s wonders. The dense alpine forests provide cool shade in the summer months, while the snow-covered landscape turns Kheerganga into a winter wonderland during the colder season. The trek offers an opportunity to admire the unique flora and fauna of the region, including colorful wildflowers and various bird species.

Cultural Encounters in Himalayan Hamlets

As you ascend on the Kheerganga trail, you’ll encounter several tiny Himalayan villages. Each offering a glimpse into the lives of the local inhabitants. Villages like Kalga, Pulga, and Tosh are known for their traditional Himachali architecture, apple orchards, and warm hospitality. The villagers’ simple way of life and their connection to the mountains serve as a reminder of the harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.

The Mysterious Kheerganga Hot Springs

The highlight of the Kheerganga trek is undoubtedly the natural hot springs that await at the summit. According to local legend, the hot springs are associated with Lord Shiva, who is believed to have meditated here for thousands of years. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks, the Kheerganga hot springs offer trekkers a much-needed respite for sore muscles and a chance to soak in the therapeutic, naturally warm water. The springs are divided into two separate pools for men and women. Thus allowing for a peaceful and rejuvenating experience.

Spiritual Significance

Kheerganga’s spiritual significance goes beyond the hot springs. The area is dotted with shrines, including a small temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. He is believed to have left behind his footprint in the rocks. This spiritual aura adds a sense of mystique to the entire experience. Thus making Kheerganga a destination for both adventure seekers and those seeking spiritual enlightenment.

Camping Under the Stars

Most trekkers choose to camp at Kheerganga overnight. This allows them to witness the stunning starlit sky in this remote Himalayan location. Camping amidst the mountains and forests creates a connection with nature that is truly unparalleled. There are several campsites offering basic facilities like tents, sleeping bags, and meals, providing trekkers with a comfortable and memorable stay.

Sunrise Magic

As dawn breaks over the Parvati Valley, trekkers can embark on a short hike to Kheerganga’s famous vantage point. It offers panoramic views of the valley and surrounding peaks. The sunrise here is nothing short of magical, with the first rays of sunlight casting an enchanting glow on the snow-covered mountains.

The Return Journey

After experiencing the magic of Kheerganga, trekkers eventually make their way back down to Kasol. The descent often offers a different perspective of the landscape. Trekkers may discover hidden gems and photo-worthy spots that they missed on the way up.

An Unforgettable Adventure

Kheerganga is more than just a trek, it’s an adventure that combines natural beauty, cultural encounters, spiritual significance, and the thrill of exploration. Whether you’re an avid trekker seeking new heights or someone looking to disconnect from the chaos of everyday life, Kheerganga has something to offer everyone. The journey to Kheerganga is not just about reaching the destination. It’s also about discovering the serene charm of the Parvati Valley and the profound connection between nature and the human spirit. So, pack your bags, lace up your hiking boots, and embark on this mystical Kheerganga trek for an unforgettable adventure in the lap of the Himalayas.

Travelling India by air is another option. India has a good air network to get you from A to B. It is a good option particularly if you are limited for time as India is a big country. It isn’t the cheapest option and you may face inconveniences of wastage of time at the airport, annoying security checks, luggage weight issues and unsatisfactory food! Airlines include Air India, Air India Express, Akasa Air and IndiGo to name a few.

Travel India by Cabs/Rickshaws/Taxis/Tuk-Tuks

You can take a cab, rickshaw, taxis or tuk-tuks to get around India. You need to bargain well sometimes to get the best price for your journey as some drivers may try to cheat foreign passengers by charging higher amounts.

Travel India by Bike/Cycle/Scooters/Private Cars

In many regions of India like the South coast and Goa, you can hire scooters and motorbikes which is great to explore nearby places. You can also rent a car but may find it frustrating following the road rules. So some people hire private drivers with cars to get them around.

Train Travel Ticketing for Train Travel in India

There are a number of options to book your seat for a journey on any train in India. So before you book a seat consider the class you wish to travel in. There are different seating categories in Indian trains, here is a rundown from higher to lower class of train travel.

AC First Class (1A) – Trains with first class seating options are the most expensive amongst all the categories. The charge is for the different added facilities like personal AC booth, good food choices and special care provided – like you were travelling by air.

AC 2 Tier (2A) – Are you looking to save some of your bucks during train travel in India and at the same time not compromise with comfort? If your response is yes, then use this option! These train coaches have more room to sit up for the passengers since they only possess 2 tiers of AC beds arrangement.

AC 3 Tier (3A) – For the cheapest comfortable seating, you should consider this option as the coach will have a three beds arrangement. It is the lowest level of coach that offers air conditioning facilities. It is usually a quiet and clean environment for travel.

Sleeper Class (SL) – If you want the cheapest option amongst all the classes and do not mind compromising with no air conditioning in your travel coach, then this could be an option. So you can have your bed reserved to sit and lie down for your whole journey but you could face issues like dirtiness and even trespassers. Best to consider the upper class of train carriage!

Buying Your Ticket to Travel on Indian Trains

To buy a ticket for train travel in India head over to Indian Railways as it provides plenty of information on train travel in India plus you can book your ticket online. If wondering if Indian Railways has a rail pass, well you are in luck, Indrail pass is available for NRIs and foreigners who plan to take multiple journeys on Indian trains. Good news if you will be travelling around India visiting many places such as the capital city of Dehli and other cities. Plus visit Agra to see the Taj Mahal or to Goa to spend time on the beach. Maybe doing India’s Golden Triangle is on your plans.

Tips for Travellers during Train Travel in India

Here are some tips for when traveling in India on the trains solo or in a group.

Always use the Indian Railways official website to book your tickets either months before or on an urgent basis (Tatkal tickets).

Keep your bags or luggage in your proximity and locked to avoid being stolen.

Never eat anything shared by an unknown or unidentified person or traveling mate while traveling in a train – you never know if it has some drug to knock you out!

Eat fresh! You can buy some affordable and tasty snacks, meals or food from the platforms of the different major train stations.

For solo women travelers to India, if you feel uncomfortable sitting between lots of men, you can ask officials, ticket checkers, or TT for a berth swap. They can help you switch your place on the same or another coach, if another spot is available.

Final Thoughts on Indian Train Travel

Traveling in India without a train is like missing out on something – or so I found. To explore with the benefits, to be safe and enjoy to the fullest train travel in India, ensure to book your journey with one of the largest train networks in the world – Indian Railways. Have you traveled by train in India? I’d love to hear.

Where is India’s Golden Triangle

Have a look at my maps following to see where India’s Golden Triangle is situated. Three cities make up this triangle. It is called a triangle because if you draw lines between the cities, it forms the shape of a triangle. And it has some of the best things to see and do in India here.

Planning Your Trip to India

When is the best time to visit India? The best time to visit India is when the weather is more pleasant, between October/November to February/April.

How many days to spend doing India’s Golden Triangle? At a minimum 7, if you spend 3 in Delhi, 2 in Agra and 3 in Jaipur that is 8 days right there. And this doesn’t include travel, which you could take overnight trains.

How to travel around India? One of the best ways to travel around India is by train, however, there are other options. But you really only need 3 train trips. Or you could go on an organised tour. Check these out from GetYourGuide.

5 Day Golden Triangle Tour from Delhi
4 Day Golden Triangle Private Tour from Delhi

What to Pack for your trip to India? Pack for the weather you will be visiting in. But some suggestions are to wear long sleeves to help beat the heat. Plus clothes that are loose fitting and breathable. Dress modestly and bring a scarf for going into temples. Wear comfortable shoes as you will be doing a lot of walking. Bringing some bug spray and sunscreen along with a hat will be useful. And don’t forget your electronics!

Conclusion

The Golden Triangle of India is more than simply a route. It’s an immersive trip through history, culture, and magnificent architecture. This triangular journey reveals the depth of India’s rich legacy, from the busy streets of Delhi to the enduring enchantment of the Taj Mahal in Agra and the regal splendour of Jaipur.

Maldives are a sun and water worshipers paradise and I show you how to enjoy this with this Maldives thrift travel guide

With so many wonders of nature that can be seen in the nearby Indian Ocean, Maldives is considered one of the most beautiful of them. With its crystal waters filled with fishes, sharks and corals, the warmth of the sunshine and the relaxing ambiance it exudes no wonder it is a popular destination. Known as being a luxe destination with lavish resorts it is one of those destinations that many splash out in. However, it is also possible to visit Maldives on a budget without breaking the bank. This Maldives thrift travel guide, written by guest author Sara Del Rosario, will help you sort and book your stay in this special part of the world.

What and Where are the Maldives

The Maldives is made up of 26 coral atolls and around 1200 remote islands that are speckled in the Indian Ocean, south-west of Sri Lanka. Only 90 of the islands are developed where you will find tourist resorts surrounded by crystal clear waters filled with sea life. The islands are popular with scuba divers, surfers and honeymooners who come to enjoy the island lifestyle.

When to go to the Maldives

You will find great weather year-round in the Maldives with temperatures hovering between 23-31°C (74-89°F). November up to April is considered the peak season in the Maldives because of its weather. It’s pretty obvious that price rates at this time are very high. For a budget-friendly Maldives travel plan, schedule it during the shoulder season (between the peak and off seasons). Aside from lower rates, there will be a reduced 20% in occupancy in Maldives resorts and some accommodations. Therefore, the months from May to October will be ideal especially if you have a quite restricted budget.

Book your flight online

Another practical way to visit Maldives on a budget is to book your flight months before the trip to avail of cheaper costs. Do some research and check any airlines that offer discounts and promos and grab it. Compare package rates from different airlines and do not forget to ensure its legitimacy before getting it. I like to use Skyscanner to find and purchase great budget-friendly flights.

Choose Accommodation Wisely

Maldives are known for their bungalows built over the crystal clear waters

Accommodation rates in the Maldives usually depend on the season you’re planning to go in. To still attain your budget, you can go for some less expensive hotels located on the local islands. Also, look for the inclusions of accommodation offers like restaurants, bars, and kiddie facilities if you travel with children and of course, the view. Also, other inclusive like meals and other delights, activities, and other facilities that can be enjoyed must be considered before finalising the deal.

One of the hardest things when visiting the Maldives is choosing where to stay. There are some incredibly enticing accommodation options. You have resorts with underwater restaurants and swanky nightclubs or resorts with over water bungalows that are only accessible by boat. Great if you are seeking a private getaway and are prepared to pay for it! There are also some iconic beach bubble tents on Finolhu Island that allow you to be closer to nature! Hostels are virtually non-existent in the Maldives so people on a budget mostly stay in guesthouses and small hotels. Check out U and Booking.com for options that suit your budget and schedule.

How to get around the Maldives

There are ways to get around the Maldives. There is the reasonably-priced, though unreliable ferry service that will take you to different islands to visit. Just check the ferry service will return on the same day, cause sometimes they don’t. And they don’t run on the weekends. You can also access other islands by private boat or plane. Private speedboats are a little pricey but more dependable while flying is incredibly expensive so skip this if you want to stay on budget.

Be wise with your Packing

Aside from considering the essentials in your suitcase, you must also be aware of the restricted policies in the Maldives. This place is a Muslim country, so expect that there are things that aren’t allowed to bring, like pork, alcohol, tobacco products, and some religious books. Nobody wants to be fined (or other worse consequences) just because of being disobedient.

When it comes to devices, besides the must-haves like phone, charger, and power bank bring a water-resistant or polarized camera to capture all of the activities you’ll do and sights you’ll be seeing. Be sure to pack comfortable clothes, swimwear, and flip flops or sandals. Here is my suggest packing list for a beach holiday.

Be aware of taxes and hidden costs

To experience the best of Maldives without hurting your pocket, never miss out on the public rates on the food menu, vehicle rentals, accommodations, excursions among others. Adding tips from their services is not obligatory, but if you do, do it in a way that you can still stick to your budget.

Always bring cash, especially USD

Maldivian Rufiyaa is the national currency of Maldives. There are services and shops that accept USD, so it’s good to have some when you travel. With this, you do not always need to use your credit cards to purchase your needs.

Avoid switching locations frequently

Yes, staying for a few days or weeks is not enough to savour this paradise. Most stay a week or more. It is not very practical to move from one place to another because of the expense, unless you have budgeted to do so. This is why in this Maldives thrift travel guide, planning and researching are very important to do ahead of your Maldives visit.

Save $$ by having Big Brunches

Save yourself for a great meal in an underwater restaurant

Meals can be expensive so it’s a good idea to combine breakfast and lunch into one meal. Have a heavy breakfast between 10 or 11 in the morning, and you will definitely never be hungry at lunchtime. Thus saving you some money. But if you have water activities planned for the day, the last thing you will want is to sink!

You will want to experience some traditional cuisine in the Maldives. Of course fish and seafood soups and stews are often on the menu. Be sure to experience local favourites like gulf (fried fish filled dough balls) or kulfi (spicy fish cakes) and for something sweet, Bondi bai (Maldivian rice pudding).

If you are hoping to cook your own food, ensure to stock up at the stores in Malé.

BYOS – Bring Your Own Wet Suit and Gear

The Maldives is so abundant in water getaways like marine life exploration which always awaits to be enjoyed. And you can savour it while saving more by bringing your own suit. Some resorts and accommodations offer water suits and equipment for additional costs daily. So, it’s better to bring and use your own and skip all the hassles in rentals that might bring more stress to your pockets.

Buy locally made Souvenirs

Buying some memorabilia is surely a part of your list, for your personal memento or friends and loved ones. In the Maldives, you can buy sarongs, lacquer work, dhonis, and traditional Maldivian mats called Thundu Kunaa. Just be ready to explore souvenir shops and compare their prices to get the best yet affordable souvenirs!

Taj Mahal in the morning (from a distance)

The Taj Mahal in India is the epitome of monumental architecture and love and something I have wanted to see for a very long time. Nestled beside the beautiful Yamuna River in Agra, it is among the Wonders of the World today with UNESCO declaring it a World Heritage Site. Above all this fame, there is the experience of visiting it in person. It is breathtaking to behold in real life. Mughal poets like Kalim have compared it to a piece of heaven that can be mistaken for a cloud. It is said that even the great Yamuna River diverted its course to make space for the Taj Mahal. To see this exotic marble monument is like seeing a dream come true and here is how to visit the Taj Mahal for yourself.

Why is the Taj Mahal so Special? A Brief History.

What makes the Taj Mahal so special is the rosy story behind it. ‘Taj’ means crown and ‘Mahal’ means palace in Urdu so it’s a crown palace. It was built over four hundred years ago in the 1600s by the great Mughal ruler of India, Shah Jahan for his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Grieved by her untimely death, he built this beautiful mausoleum for her. He wanted her to lie in a place as beautiful as heaven on the Earth. Starting from 1631, it took two decades to build. Millions of dollars were spent on it and thousands of artisans were employed to turn it into the beautiful monument it is. Now it is the tomb of both of the royals and a symbol of eternal love. Ohhhh what a great story!

What to See at the Taj Mahal?

You will see a fine blend of Hindu and Mughal cultures in the Indo-Islamic architecture of the Taj Mahal. It holds perfect symmetry and uniform shapes. Both the indoors and outdoors are gorgeous and one-of-a-kind. The main dome stands on a marble platform. There are four Minarets at the corners. Inside you can see inlay work and traditional carvings. It houses several types of precious and semi-precious stones on the marble. There is a typical Mughal-style garden around it called the char bagh. And when visiting at the right time you will see the reflection of the Taj Mahal in the water of the moat. But I don’t want to spoil it too much as I’m sure you will make up your own mind of what parts of the Taj Mahal you want to see for yourself.

Tourists from all over the world throng to see the Taj Mahal every year. So where is the Taj Mahal and how do you get there?

Getting to the Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal is in the North of India, in the city of Agra in Uttar Pradesh. It will depend on where you are coming from as to how to get there. Many arrive in India in the capital New Delhi, which is some 3-4 hours away from Agra. After spending some time in New Delhi usually the next stop for tourists is to Agra to see the Taj Mahal. To get to Agra from New Delhi, there are a number of options.

You can take a cab ride along the excellent Yamuna Expressway from New Delhi to Agra.

If using public transport. Take a bus to the Idgah bus stop or a train from Hazrat Nizamuddin Station to the Agra Cantt Station. The trains you can take are Shatabdi, Rajdhani, Taj Express and Palace on Wheels.

Fly to Agra Airport then travel to the Taj Mahal.

Take a tour. There are several travel agencies in New Delhi to arrange your visit or arrange it before you arrive. Check out these tours.

You can visit the Taj Mahal any time of year, however if you don’t like the heat avoid the summer rainy season. Best to visit the Taj Mahal from October, November to February. It is winter season during this time and the heat is tolerable. The Taj Mahal is open from 6 am in the morning to 5 pm in the evening. It is closed on Fridays. So you can visit during the daytime to get a good view of it. You can click pictures except inside the main mausoleum. You can hire photographers also. Drones are not allowed in and around here. It has 3 gates, West, East and the Southern Gate which is the exit gate.

Best time to See the Taj Mahal

The best time to see the Taj Mahal is early in the morning, sunrise in fact when the building changes colour as the sun rises. If you want to see this, plan to arrive at the East Gate by 5.30am as the ticket counter opens at 6am. I know it is early, but if you want to see it, you gotta do it? Check out the accommodation recommendations following in Agra. Staying in Agra will give you the best chance of being there this early however, you can visit the Taj Mahal all day. Just a note on taking photos: Outside, sure, snap away, but inside is a tomb and it’s disrespectful to take photographs of it. There are plenty of guards walking around to ensure you don’t sneak any pictures.

Getting your ticket to visit Taj Mahal

You will need a ticket to get into the Taj Mahal. As many people want to see it, queues can be long. The ticket counter opens an hour before its opening and closes 45 mins before the closing time. So make sure you get an early visit to avoid queues at the counter. There are different ticket lines, one for foreigners and one for locals.

You can also buy it online through the Archeological Survey of India. Tickets are free for children below 15 years of age. Just make sure you carry an ID card. For adults, Indian nationals pay Rs 40, SAARC and BIMTSEC pay Rs 540 per adult. Foreign nationals pay approximately Rs. 1200. If you want to see the actual mausoleum inside the Taj Mahal, you will need to pay Rs. 200 extra. Most tickets come with a water bottle and shoe coverings.

Apart from the regular day opening hours, there is a special night tour of the Taj Mahal. The structure looks fantastic on a full moon night. It glistens under the moon and stars. The night tour happens 5 days a month on and around full moon nights except for Friday. There are group tours from 8:30 pm till midnight. You can check the next date for this on the Taj Mahal tourism website.

You can buy a ticket in advance through GetYourGuide.

How long to spend at the Taj Mahal

The time you spend at the Taj Mahal will depend on how long it takes you to walk around and enjoy all it has to offer. Overall you can expect to spend about half a day here, though some spend longer and some shorter.

What NOT to bring to the Taj Mahal

Bring as little as possible on your visit to the Taj Mahal, a lot of things such as eating and smoking are strictly prohibited inside Taj Mahal. As are tripods and electric goods (except your camera) so check all the things first that cannot be taken, otherwise it will be taken off you. Mobile phones are allowed but must be kept switched off or on silent mode. Only small handbags are allowed in with essential items, so don’t take that big daypack with your nibbles for the day.

Places to visit near Taj Mahal in Agra

Depending how much time you have in Agra, there are other things to see and do apart from visiting the Taj Mahal. You can hire a bike, prepaid taxi or tempo or auto-rickshaw and visit the gorgeous red Agra Fort about 2-3 km away. Opposite this is the Jama Masjid, the largest Mosque built by the Mughals in India. Go a little further and see the Fatehpur Sikri, a city built by the Great Akbar, the famous Mughal Emperor of India. Other close by notable places are the Akbar’s Tomb, Mehtab Bagh, Soami Bagh, Guru ka Taal Gurudwara, and Itimad-ud-daula’s Tomb.

Perhaps you would like to try some traditional Indian food and sweets. After visiting the Taj Mahal, you can head to a nearby hotel to try some Bedai or Muglai food. Do not forget the famous Agra ka Petha dessert. If you want to indulge in street food, you can go to the Chaat Gali in Sadar Bazar of Agra. To try Indian sweets, visit Deviram sweets of Agra which is a famous place.
