So you want to live work and play abroad and are just beginning the process of how you can do this. And during your research you find there are different visas available that allow you to live and work abroad. So which visa will you apply for to allow you to extend your time abroad? To do this you need to ask yourself some questions. Do you want to travel full-time? Go on a working holiday? Be a digital nomad or an expat working remotely? Whatever type of traveller you want to be, there is a visa to help you meet your legal requirements of moving abroad to live work and play around the world. Let me elaborate.

 

What is a Passport?

 

Don’t laugh! I am often asked by newbie travellers ‘what is a passport?’. So let me tell you. A passport is an official document issued by the country of your origin and is your identity. It looks like a little book. You will need a passport to travel internationally. Without one you cannot travel to another country. Apply for a passport through your country’s government department that issues them. And when you have a passport you can then apply for a visa which is usually stamped into your passport. So that is one of the reasons why you need a passport.

 

What is a Visa?

 

A visa is a necessity to live, work and play around the world. The word visa means ‘to see’, so the officials of a country have seen your documents and decided to provide a visa to allow you in. A visa is usually stamped in your passport though many countries are introducing e-visas. There are different visas allowing you to live work and play abroad. I’m running through them following.

 

Things to know about visas

 

Just a few things to know about visas:

1. There are different visas and one size does not fit all situations.
2. Each country has their own visas and they do things a little different. 
3. Your nationality matters when it comes to visas. Countries have negotiated visas with other countries so it depends on what your country has negotiated as to what visa is available for your nationality.

That said, let’s dive into the different visas available to live work and play abroad.

 

Visas Allowing You to Live Work and Play Abroad

 

1. Tourist Visa

 

A tourist visa is your basic entry pass into another country. It’s perfect for short-term trips when you want to explore, try all the local food, and see the sights. The catch? You can’t legally work or earn income while you’re there. How long you get depends on your passport and the country. Some offer 30 days (like Thailand), others 90 (like most of Europe’s Schengen Area), and a lucky few, like Mexico, give you up to 180.

Some places make it easy to extend your stay, while others require you to leave and re-enter. You might also be asked for proof of onward travel, a return ticket, or enough funds to support yourself. So make sure to check those details before you pack.

While it’s not a ticket to long-term residency, a tourist visa is perfect for trying a country to see if it feels right. I’ve used it myself to get a feel for places before deciding to stay longer. Just remember: rules can change quickly, so double-check official immigration sites before booking.

 

The Visa Run

 

Just a word on the visa run! What’s this you ask? Well, it is when you stay in a country, because you like it, and stay the full amount of time you are allowed on a tourist visa, usually 90 days. But you love it so much, you want to live and work there. If you don’t qualify for any other visa that allows it, or you just don’t want to go through the hassle of applying, people do a visa run. They leave the country for a few hours or days, then return to the country and get another 90 days stay. Is this legal? Well, not really, but people do it.

It is extremely common practice in Southeast Asia and Latin America. Now it sounds great, but it means you aren’t entitled to local healthcare and don’t have legal rights in some instances. Like if you are found to be working. It is advisable to have long-term travel insurance such as that offered by SafetyWing.

 

2. Working Holiday Visa

 

The second visa on my list of visas that let you live work and play abroad is the working holiday maker visa. If you’re under 30 (or up to 35 in some countries), a working holiday visa can be a great way to see the world without draining your savings. It lets you live in another country for 6–12 months (sometimes longer if you qualify for an extension) while funding your travels with short-term or seasonal work. The idea is to make enough to keep exploring without locking yourself into a long-term contract.

These visas are based on agreements between countries. Eligibility depends on your passport. Some countries have annual quotas and fill up fast, so applying early is important. If your country doesn’t have an agreement with your dream destination, unfortunately, you won’t be able to get this visa there.

It’s perfect if you want to experience everyday life in another country, meet locals, and make friends from all over the world without committing to a long work contract. Just remember, most of the work is casual or seasonal, so it’s more about the experience than building a long-term career.

3. Digital Nomad Visa

 

Next on my visa list that let’s you live and work abroad for an extended period of time is the digital nomad visa. A digital nomad visa is designed for remote workers, freelancers, and online business owners who want to live in another country while earning their income from abroad. Unlike a tourist visa that limits you to a quick visit, these often let you stay anywhere from six months to a few years, depending on the country.

Destinations like Portugal, Estonia, and Croatia are popular choices, and more countries are launching their own programs every year. Each country sets its own requirements. You might need to show proof of a steady income, have valid health insurance, or pay an application fee that can range from reasonable to “are you kidding me?”

What I love about this visa is the chance to truly settle in. You can slow down, get to know your neighborhood, find a favourite cafe, and enjoy a place without rushing through like a tourist, all while keeping your work life going. Just make sure to research the cost of living, internet reliability, and requirements before you commit, so you choose a spot that works for both your budget and your lifestyle.

4. Work Permit

 

A work permit is one of the most common ways to live and work abroad. It’s usually tied to a specific job with a local employer, so you can’t freely switch roles or industries without applying for a new permit. In many cases, your employer will handle most of the application process, sometimes even covering the fees, which can save you a lot of time and stress.

Jobs that include a work permit are teaching English and working on a cruise ship.

The length of a work permit depends on the country and your contract. Some are valid for a year, others for two or more, and they can often be renewed if you stay in the same role. This option works best if you already have a job offer or if your skills are in demand where you’re headed.

One thing to remember: if your job ends, your right to stay usually ends too. That means it’s less flexible than visas like the digital nomad or working holiday option, but it’s a great option if you want stability and a clear career track abroad.

 

5. Student Visa

 

A student visa lets you live and study abroad, whether you’re working toward a full degree, joining a semester exchange, or taking a short language course. You’ll need to be enrolled in a recognised school or university, and in many countries, you can also work part-time to help cover expenses. Australia and Canada are particularly generous with work hours, while others keep it more limited (or don’t allow it at all).

Your visa length usually matches your course, but some countries let you extend or switch to a work visa after graduation. That means studying abroad can sometimes lead to a longer stay or even a new career path overseas.

Aside from academics, a student visa provides access to a completely different lifestyle. You’ll make friends from all over the world, get used to a new culture, and see your studies through a global perspective. For many, a student visa ends up being the beginning of a lifelong international adventure.

And don’t think there is an age limit for a student visa. People of all ages can apply for a student visa to undertake a course abroad.

 

6. Skilled Person Visa

 

Last on my list of visas that allow you to live work and play abroad is the skilled person visa. A skilled person visa is for people whose qualifications and experience match what a country urgently needs. That might be tech experts, healthcare workers, engineers, teachers, or skilled trades like carpenters and electricians. Governments use these visas to fill gaps in their workforce. So if your skills are in demand, you’re not just welcome; you’re on their priority list.

The process is usually more detailed than other visas. You’ll likely need to show proof of your education, work history, and sometimes a job offer from a local employer. Some countries even use a points system, looking at your age, qualifications, language ability, and experience. It can feel like you’re pulling together your entire career on paper, but it’s worth it.

The reward is stability. Many skilled visas lead to permanent residency or even citizenship. That makes them one of the most secure and rewarding ways to relocate. If you’re ready to handle the paperwork and meet the requirements, this could be your gateway to building a future in a country that actively wants you there.

 

The Right Visa for You

 

Now the visas I’ve mentioned aren’t all the visas offered, but they are the most common visa types. I suggest, if you are interested in a specific country, research the type of visas they offer for your nationality. Knowing the type of work you will be doing, physical or online and having an understanding of your visa options is your passport to moving abroad successfully and legally.

Fáilte Ireland. Welcome to Ireland or the Emerald Isle, home of Saint Patrick’s Day, castles, Irish pubs, leprechauns, Titanic, pots of gold at the end of rainbows and good craic! And welcome to this 1 month Ireland itinerary that takes in two countries on the one island. Yep that’s right, the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland are two countries on the one island.

Ireland is an island resting in the Atlantic Ocean, separated from Britain by the Irish Sea. Its size is roughly 500 x 300 km with its north still ruled by the United Kingdom and the south, a member of the European Union. This size makes it easy to get around. In fact, you could drive from one side of the country to the other within a few hours, but not on this itinerary. We are taking our time to explore Ireland and what makes it so unique.

In this post I’m taking you on a 4 week Ireland holiday exploring all the corners of both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Starting and ending in Dublin (though you could start and end in Belfast). We will circle and traverse the island taking in some of the best things to see and do in Ireland. 

This highlights of Ireland in 1 month itinerary is best done as a 1 month Ireland road trip. Having a car on this itinerary provides flexibility so you can deviate at anytime if you see something you want to see that isn’t on the itinerary. You can easily rent a car for this one month itinerary of Ireland. I usually start my search for a car and their cost and availability through DiscoverCars. But you can still do this itinerary by bus or train – it will just take a little more organising as you will be governed by timetables.

This post is divided into two sections. The first section is my one month itinerary of Ireland advising on the places to see and things to do in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Though, we cannot visit every town on this Ireland itinerary, but as you are driving, feel free to deviate if a town, castle or historic site catches your attention. While the second section in this Ireland travel guide for a month is all about preparing and planning your month long Ireland holiday. From the best time to visit to choosing accommodation and what to pack for your Ireland holiday.

Well then, are you ready to discover Ireland, both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland on this 1 month Irish odyssey? And wouldn’t it be wonderful if we found a pot of gold at the end of that rainbow!

1 Month Ireland Itinerary at a Glance

 

You may have it in your mind already the things you want to see and do in Ireland. In this itinerary I include all the best places to visit in Ireland which probably includes all the things you are thinking of seeing. I have worked the itinerary out for 28 days in Ireland giving you the a day or so at either end for travel to and from Ireland. This 4 week Irish itinerary starts and ends in Dublin, but you could start and end in other Irish cities such as Belfast.

Ireland 1 Month Itinerary

 

Are you ready to enjoy the best of both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Let’s get into it.

 

Days 1-4 – Dublin

Welcome to the Emerald Isle! Depending on your time of arrival, check into your accommodation then put your walking shoes on and get out and start discovering Dublin. Dublin is the largest city and also the capital city of the Republic of Ireland. Dublin has a ton of history and plenty of attractions to discover. 

When I arrive in a new city I always like to go on a Hop On Hop Off Sightseeing bus tour of the city. Yeah, I know it is touristy, but these buses have a lot to offer. They take you to all the best places to see in Dublin, provide a commentary about them and allow you to hop off the bus to explore places of interest more fully, then allow you to hop back on the bus to your next stop. I usually do the full loop first to get my bearings.

After going on the Dublin Hop on Hop off bus you will have a good idea of the best things to do and see in Dublin and places you want to explore more. These can include:

• Trinity College was built by Queen Elizabeth in 1592, with the aim of connecting the Irish back with culture. The place is still used today as a centre for higher education. The Book of Celts is a book of the New Testament, painted by Celtic monks in about 800 and is housed in the library at the college.

• The National Museum of Ireland covers 3 museums: Decorative Arts and History, Natural History and Archeology. They are all in walking distance from one another so if you love museums, get ready to visit them. They are open daily with free admission.

• You can’t visit Dublin and not visit Dublin Castle. This castle was the centre of power in Ireland between the 13th – 20th centuries. The castle was attacked during the “Easter Uprising” of 1916.

• Another must visit while in Dublin is the Guinness Storehouse. See how the most famous Irish beer is produced and maybe have a taste or two! It is open daily and costs from 22€ when booking online.

• Visit Jameson Distillery to discover how Irish whiskey is made.

• Go for a meal and a drink in Temple Bar.

• St Patrick’s Cathedral was the centre of the “Church of Ireland”. The present structure was erected in 1191. Beneath the church floor the pastor and author Jonathan Swift are buried.

• If you are in need of some open space to enjoy in the centre of Dublin visa Phoenix Park. Often referred to as the green lung of the city, it is the largest urban park in Europe.

Days 5-6 – Waterford via Wicklow

Today, rent a car and start driving down the south-east coast of Ireland. Stopping wherever you like on your way to Waterford, though the route I’m following is via Wicklow. Because you could visit Glandalough, a glacial valley in County Wicklow that is renowned for an early medieval monastic settlement founded in the 6th century. But take your time driving in the countryside, after all, you do have 1 month in Ireland so can take your time.

There are some great things to see and do in Waterford. The House of Waterford Crystal will be first on your places to visit in Waterford. Go on a guided factory tour to see high-end crystal being made. Start your tour in the mould room where you will witness the ancient art of mould making. Moulds help the blowers flawlessly shape the molten crystal. Then on to the blowing department where they say ‘the magic of crystal being’. Watch Master Blowers transform balls of crystal into majestic shapes before they are placed in a 1400-degree furnace. Then it is on to the hand marking, cutting, sculpting and engraving departments. Then check out the beautiful crystal in the retail store.

Days 7-9 – to Cork via Tipperary

kiss the Blarney Stone or on way to Cork as a day trip

 

On day 7 of this one month Ireland itinerary we head to Cork via the Rock of Cashel and Tipeperary. You could hug the coastline if you wanted, but the Rock of Cashel is quite amazing to see. 

The Rock of Cashel is a cluster of medieval buildings set on a dramatic limestone outcrop and is an iconic and historic castle. It was the traditional seat of the Kings of Munster for several hundred years prior to the Norman invasion. King Munster, donated it to the church in 1101. Then it is on to Tipperary for lunch. Tipperary has a few historic sites to visit but I wanted to visit for the song ‘It’s a long way to Tipperary’ just to say I had been there.

Then on to Cork. If you have time this afternoon and are itching to kiss the Blarney Stone at Blarney Castle, it is only a 15 minute drive along Blarney Road from Cork, so you could do this on your way there or on leaving Cork on your way to Kilkenny, the next stop on this 1 month road trip itinerary of Ireland.

Start your day with a 1 hour and 20 minute drive towards Cork and Blarney Castle. Blarney Castle is a ruined castle housing the famed Blarney Stone, a kiss of which is said to grant the gift of the gab. It is open daily from 9am – 4:30pm and has an entrance fee of 8€.

After kissing the Blarney Stone head to Cork.

Cork is the second largest city in the Republic of Ireland. It is a lively university town and is a busy port. Spend two days here soaking up the vibe while visiting some of the best sights. Some of the best things to do include visiting museums, discover how whiskey is made and visiting the local markets. 

If you love museums, check out The Cork Public Museum in Cork, where you will discover exhibits on the history of Cork, including archaeological, economic and political history. Also check out Cork City Gaol. Here you will find this museum located inside a castle and will discover the lifestyle the prisoners let. There are dozens of wax dolls scattered throughout reflecting this. Not all museumed out yet! Check out the interesting Butter Museum, tabling the history of butter making in Cork.

One of the best places to visit in Cork during your 4 weeks in Ireland is to head to the Jameson Distillery. This whiskey distillery dates from the 18th century so take a tour around the distillery to discover how whiskey is made followed by some whiskey tasting. Even if you are travelling Ireland with kids, it will be interesting for them to learn how whiskey is made while leaving the tasting to mum and dad!

Another stop in Cork is at 18th century The English Market. Here you will find many traders selling organic and locally produced food. It is open Monday to Saturday and closed on a Sunday – so if you have accommodation in Cork with cooking facilities I dare say you will be cooking your own dinner tonight!

Day 10-13 Killarney for Ring of Kerry

See fabulous coastline driving The Ring of Kerry

 

There are a number of ways to reach Killarney including hugging the coastline for some exquisite coastal views, well it is the beginning or ending of the Wild Atlantic Way.  The Wild Atlantic Way is a route running along the west coast of Ireland from Cork to Derry. And a lot of this Ireland one month itinerary is along this route.

Another option for reaching Killarney is heading along the N22. Killarney is the most popular starting point of the Ring of Kerry so on this 4 week Ireland itinerary, we are using Killarney as our base to explore the area. There are plenty of hotels, B&Bs, restaurants, shops and pubs here to enjoy. But, you don’t have to, you can stay in one of the small towns along the Ring of Kerry route.

After arriving in Killarney, spend some time discovering this gem in Ireland. Roam through cute streets popping into tiny boutique stores. If you are seeking some classic Irish souvenirs pop in to the Aran Sweater Market where you can get a sweater made out of Ireland’s famous wool. Or another product like a beanie or scarf. Or wait till you go on a day trip to the Aran Islands around day 18 of this 1 month Ireland itinerary.

For day 11, and your second day based in Killarney, jump in the car as most who come to Killarney, use it as a base to discover one of Ireland’s best road trips – The Ring of Kerry. And today, this is what is planned on this itinerary.

The Ring of Kerry drive is a circular route of 179km (111 miles). If you hopped in your car and drove it non-stop it would take you 3 and a half hours. But why would you when there are some wonderful coastal places to stop and enjoy. As you drive around the Iveragh Peninsula you will see some spectacular places – Moll’s Gap, Torc Waterfall and the Gap of Dunloe are outstanding. But with every turn brings a new treat along this route including rolling green hills, lakes, rivers, waters, grand houses, castles and spectacular cliff faces. Definitely worth a full day or two to drive.

Day 12 and your third day based in Killarney, definitely visit the Gap of Dunlop. I chose to visit in a horse drawn carriage, but you can walk or drive through this stunning passage between two mountains carved from glacial ice. Near Killarney is the Killarney National Park where you can visit Ross Castle and stop by Muckross House and Torc Waterfall.

Day 13 and your fourth day based in Killarney take a day trip to the Skellig Islands. You may recognise them from the Star Wars movie, The Force Awakens at the end when, and without spoiling it for you, when Luke Skywalker is located. Tours are usually only run in the summer months when the weather is better and the Atlantic Ocean kinder. If lucky enough to reach the islands, you will see the UNESCO World Heritage beehive huts made by Christian monks. The smaller of the two islands is home to the world’s largest Northern Gannet colony as well as puffins and other seabirds. You may even see some seal, dolphins and whales. Fingers crossed!

Days 14 – Dingle Peninsula

Today leave Killarney and surrounds behind and head to The Dingle Peninsula, on Ireland’s southwest Atlantic coast. This peninsula is ringed by sandy beaches and craggy cliffs. You may want to visit Dunmore Head, mainland Ireland’s mostly easterly point offering views over the Atlantic Ocean. Spend some time in the town of Dingle roaming around with an ice cream from Murphy’s Ice Cream – an institution in Dingle. And visit the statue of long-time harbour resident Fungie, the Dingle Dolphin by the waterfront. Dingle Oceanworld Aquarium has penguins, otters and sharks. Maybe check out the Dingle Distillery – yep, more whiskey!

 

Days 15-16 – Limerick

On day 15 of this 28 day Irish itinerary, jump in the car and head to Limerick. Pass through many towns including Tralee – home of the Rose of Tralee International Festival held in August every year.

Limerick is the third largest city in Ireland and easy drive from Killarney. On arrival, check in to your accommodation, get your walking shoes on and get to know Limerick. Things to see and do in Limerick for the rest of today and a full day tomorrow include visiting  Saint Mary’s Cathedral. This is an iconic 12th-century cathedral with beautiful large stained-glass windows and a small burial ground. 

Another great place to visit in Limerick is King John’s Castle Visitor Experience. This, if you know your history, is a fabulous place to discover the stories of ruthless King John, the noble knights, and rebellious natives. King John’s Castle brings to life over 800 years of dramatic local history. Being a history buff, I loved this and my kids who travelled to Ireland with me found it interesting too!

Also visit the The Treaty Stone, the rock that the Treaty of Limerick was signed in 1691. It marks the surrender of the city to William of Orange – another great history buff moment. 

Continue walking around Limerick to Sarsfield Bridge. This is the second of Limerick’s River Shannon crossings and commemorates Patrick Sarsfield, the Earl of Lucan, who is renowned in Limerick for his role in the Williamite War and the 1691 siege and Treaty of Limerick in particular. Wow!

If you love markets, then head to The Milk Market. This is an airy, covered market selling fruits, veggies, meats, dairy items, crafts and baked goods since 1852. You may want to purchase food to cook for dinner here if you chose to stay in accommodation with kitchen facilities or head to one of the many pubs or restaurants for good Irish food and craic.

After another Irish souvenir? Well Galway is the place to get yourself a Claddagh ring. This ring has two hands clasping a heart and was traditionally given in Ireland as a token of love.

 

Days 17-19 – to Galway via Cliffs of Moher + day trip to Aran Islands

Cliffs of Moher

 

Leaving Limerick, follow N85 for some 80km or a little over an hour (50 miles) to reach the iconic Cliffs of Moher. Ireland’s west coast has hundreds of metres of straight cliff thanks to the strong winds and shards of water being blown off the Atlantic Ocean. And the Cliffs of Moher are a prime example. I suggest you keep a raincoat handy and some warm clothes as the wind along the cliffs can be strong and you don’t want to be blown away. Then on to Galway. Or, you may want to stop at Doolin village. This village is known as a gateway to the ancient sites on the Aran Islands (which is on the itinerary for tomorrow), which are just offshore. You could visit Doolin Cave where there is a huge free-hanging stalactite. If not, on to Galway.

Spend day 18 in Galway. Roam around the street visiting many great sites. Maybe start at Saint Nicholas’ Collegiate Church, a large, 14th-century Anglican Episcopal church visited by Oliver Cromwell and Christopher Columbus. Then on to The Spanish Arch. Built in 1584 it is an extension of the 12th century Norman-built town wall stretching from Martin’s Tower to the riverbank. Next visit Eyre Square, a popular square in the heart of the city featuring a playground for the kids. Then onto Galway Cathedral, a modern and airy, green-domed, renaissance-style Catholic cathedral. Now it’s time for some relaxation after all that walking so head to Galway’s Pedestrian Area. It starts on the east in William’s Road, continues as Shop’s Road, High Road, and ends with Quay Road. Here you will find some great seafood restaurants, after all Galway is on the water, and plenty of pubs with food, beers or Guinness, Irish music and good Irish craic. Me thinks this would be a great way to end a full day roaming around Galway.

Day 19 of this Ireland one month holiday is a day trip to the Aran Islands. The Aran Islands are a group of three islands off Ireland’s west coast and a visit to them offers a unique Irish culture experience. The largest of the three islands is Ini More (Inishmore) which is inhabited and the locals speak Irish. Explore the dramatic coastal scenery, see ancient stone forts, go cycling on the car-free islands and discover many historical sites. And definitely visit the stores to buy unique Aran Island knitwear.

Days 20-21 to Sligo via Kylemore Abbey

Hop in the car and head to Kylemore Abbey nestled in the heart of Connemara on the Wild Atlantic Way for the morning. There is plenty of history, serenity and beauty to discover here in the 1,000 acre estate. It is home to a Benedictine order of Nuns and it welcomes visitors and is well worth a visit.

After exploring Kylemore Abbey hop back in the car for the next stop, Sligo. The town of Sligo straddles the Garavogue River where it meets Sligo Bay, so is a very scenic place to stop. It’s known for its literary heritage, rugged countryside and the medieval Sligo Abbey. It is also known for surfing, yep, surfing! If you love to surf there are plenty of big-wave surfing to enjoy or perhaps have a surfing lesson. You can hire equipment along the beach. 

Sligo has also produced many writers including Poets William Butler Yeats, novelists and historians. This area is known as ‘Yeats Country’ as he spent a significant amount of his childhood here, even though he was born in Dublin. 

 

Days 22-23 to Londonderry via Enniskillen

Discover ‘The Troubles’ in Northern Ireland

 

Today, day 21 of this journey around Ireland you leave one country and enter another. Yep, today you leave the Republic of Ireland and arrive in Northern Ireland, UK. And no, you don’t need to drive through any check points as the UK and Ireland share a Common Travel Area (CTA) that allows free travel between the two countries. 

Enniskillen is in Northern Ireland and unfortunately remembered for its significance during ’The Troubles’ in Northern Ireland. Particularly remembered for the tragic Remembrance Day bombing of 8th November 1987 when 11 people were killed. You will find Enniskillen nestled on a small island separating Upper and Lower Lough Erne, so it is a beautiful waterside town.

Things to see and do in Enniskillen include visiting Enniskillen Castle. And while roaming around town there are plenty of small boutique shops to explore. If you love trains check out the Headhunters Barber Shop and Railway Museum.  Then back in the car and head to Londonerry.

Officially Londonderry but often called Derry, is the largest city in County Londonderry and the second largest in Northern Ireland. Londonderry is a walled city and lies on the West Bank of the River Foyle. There are two road roads and one footbridge connecting it to the other bank. Spend a full day in Londonderry discovering old buildings with lots of history.

Top things to visit in Londonderry include the Peace Bridge, Museum of Free Derry, Free Derry Museum, Tower Museum, St Columbs Cathedral and the Bloody Sunday Obelisk Memorial. And make time to walk along the 400-year-old City Walls.

Wave goodbye to Londonderry to head to Belfast via a couple of spectacular Irish natural wonders. Before arriving at one of Ireland’s iconic coastline, whiskey lovers may want to pay a visit to the Bushmill’s Distillery in Bushmills. It is literally down the road from the Giant’s Causeway.  

Drive along the Causeway Coast of Natural Beauty to the National Trust of Carrick-a-Rede. Then on to Belfast for 3 days.

I’ve budgetted three full days to spend in Belfast:

On the first full day in Belfast I suggest taking the Belfast Hop On Hop Off bus tour of the city as this will take you to all the best places to see and visit in Belfast. Do the full circuit first to help you decide on the places you wish to visit. But I bet the first place will be the Titanic Experience where you can easily spend the rest of the day. It is well worth a visit to discover the sights, sounds, smells and stories of the ship, as well as the people and city that made her.

For you second day in Belfast, get to know the rest of Belfast. Visit Belfast Castle, Belfast Cathedral and Belfast City Hall. And don’t forget the Ulster Museum. Or perhaps you would like to go on a black cab tour of the city. This is where a local will take you around town explaining the rough history and show you both sides of the wall and some of the most famous murals in the city and why they were painted.

On your third day in Belfast you could visit sites still on your list or roam around the city and shop. Game of Throne fans might like to go on a tour to see filming locations.

Day 28 – to Dublin via Dundalk

Dundalk is half way between Belfast and Dublin. It is situated on the Castletown River, which flows into Dundalk Bay on the north-east coast of Ireland, and is halfway between Dublin and Belfast, close to and south of the border with Northern Ireland and I thought it a lovely place to stop. However, if you have stayed extra somewhere on this itinerary – as it is designed to be flexible so you can – you may want to drive straight to Dublin.

Spend your last day or so in Dublin before leaving for home or your next destination.

Best Time to Visit Ireland

 

In my opinion, anytime is a good time to visit Ireland however, the seasons, events and costs can play a big part of choosing when to visit. If you want to experience St. Patricks Day, held each March, well, that is when you will need to go. Or if you are invited to a wedding, well, you don’t really have any choice. If you have no commitments and prefer warmer weather, then head to Ireland during the summer months (June, July, August). Be wary that costs of accommodation can increase during these busy months and there will be lots of other tourists around.

The Spring and Autumn months are the best time to visit if you are budget conscious as airfares and accommodation can be lower. While the winter months in Ireland can be very cold and you will need to wrap up warm to see many of the sites, like the Cliffs of Moher. Plus some places might close, so check attractions will be open if you are visiting during the winter season. But it is enjoyable sitting in a warm pub enjoying an Irish meal and a drink!

But as I said, any time is a good time to visit Ireland.

 

How to Get to Ireland

 

As Ireland is an island, there are two options on how you can travel there – by flying or by ferry. The first option is to get a flight. You can get a direct flight into Dublin, where this itinerary begins or other Irish cities. Check out Skyscanner here for price and availability. The second option is to get a ferry. There are a number of ports in England, Wales, Scotland, Isle of Man, France and The Netherlands where you can catch a ferry from to Ireland. For instance, if you want to start this month long trip to Ireland in Belfast, you can get a ferry from Liverpool in England, or fly into Belfast.

 

How to Get Around Ireland

 

Getting around Ireland is quite easy as there are a number of choices including train, bus and car. The best way to get around Ireland and truly enjoy everything the Emerald Isle has to offer is by renting a car. Having a car gives you the flexibility to go where you want, when you want and you will not be reliant on timetables like with trains and buses. 

If you don’t want to drive, check out the bus and train network, though, this itinerary is designed to be driven. this itinerary is based on travelling by car. In the Republic of Ireland train travel is run by Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail) and in Northern Ireland trains are operated by Translink. The buses are clean and affordable but it is also the slowest form of transportation. In the Republic of Ireland buses are operated by Bus Éireann and Translink provides services in Northern Ireland.

 

Driving in Ireland Tips

• Drive on the left side of the road.
• Speed signs in Ireland are in Kilometres Per Hour, but if you go to Northern Ireland it changes to Miles Per Hour.
• Take an International Drivers’ Licence with you, it will help when renting a car.
• You may be driving on thin roads with no lines marked. Keep to the left and slow down if a car comes the other way so you can pass each other safely.

 

Where to Stay while in Ireland

 

Ireland offers loads of different accommodation from budget to I going to splurge places. On this road trip through Ireland we spend one night in 6 different towns. Basically you will only need somewhere that is comfortable for the one night. Therefore, the accommodation recommended in this 7 day Ireland itinerary is for a bed in a hostel or a room in a B&B. I personally would stay in a B&B only because breakfast is included. I found this wonderful while I was driving around Ireland because once up, I didn’t have to go looking for somewhere to have breakfast, I just had to walk downstairs. Do You Need to Book Everything in Advance?

 

It is wise to book most things in advance including your travel, entrance tickets and your accommodation as things can book up and may not be available on the day you require it to be. So if I was booking this Ireland holiday I would book a car, some accommodation for my initial stay and maybe wing accommodation as I travel, and some entrance tickets. What to Pack for a Holiday in Ireland?

 

When packing for a holiday in Ireland, be governed by the weather. Most of the time it is cool and wet so pack warm wet weather clothes. Also a good pair of walking shoes as you will do plenty of walking. And don’t forget the sunscreen and a hat for those warmish days.

Your packing list for Ireland should include:

Documents. Passport, visa (if needed), money and credit cards, travel insurance details, pre-booked entrance and Hop-on Hop-off bus tickets, pre-booked accommodation details. Also take an International Driver’s Licence.
Clothes. It is mostly cool and wet in Ireland so warm clothes unless you are going in the middle of the summer months so have a few summery outfits. You will need underwear, shorts and t-shirts, long pants or skirts or jeans. A warm jacket, beanie and scarf. Ensure you have good walking shoes as you will be walking a lot.
Electronics. Phone, camera, power adaptor plug and power bank. Laptop and any other gear if you are a digital nomad.
Toiletries.
Luggage. As you will be moving around every few days on this itinerary of Italy, ensure your luggage is easy to carry.

Best Time to Visit California

 

Anytime is a good time to visit California as you can visit it year-round. Though, the weather might play a large part in activities you might undertake while visiting this US state. But if only visiting for a weekend or have your holiday at a certain time, then these things can govern when you visit.

The California summer months of June, July, August are some of the best months to enjoy California. The weather is hot and with plenty of sunshine you can visit all the popular attractions. Many places, such as the theme parks are open longer also. But be prepared to enjoy everything with plenty of other visitors. Though I find it a little hot to do some things like hiking in the national parks. I prefer to do this during the more pleasant weather of the Spring (March, April, May) and Fall (Autumn) (September, October November) months. But there is still plenty to see and do in California during the winter months of December, January, February when the weather can be cool.

 

How to Get around California?

 

If you don’t have a car to get around California, don’t worry, you can hire one. Otherwise, one of the best ways to get around California is by bus. Most counties in California has its own local bus line making it easy to get to places you want to see. The train network isn’t as widespread as it is in some countries, such as in Europe, but there are some great train trips you can take to get you around California. One, the Coast Starlight train is the first submission of things to see and do in California. Otherwise, there are plenty of airports dotted around the state with planes that will fly you to where you want to go.

When I visited California, I was eager for a road trip adventure, but the prospect of driving in a foreign country was daunting. The solution? A train trip along the West Coast.

The Coast Starlight, a long-distance passenger train operated by Amtrak, traverses the scenic western coastline of the United States. The entire journey, depending on conditions, takes about 35 hours. While the train offers basic seats and simple meals, passengers can also upgrade to roomettes and enjoy more elaborate dining options. Its name, “Starlight,” is a nod to the Southern Pacific Railroad’s “Daylight” trains that once covered part of this route.

Running between Seattle, Washington, and Los Angeles, with about 28 stops in all, the Coast Starlight covers 1,377 miles (2,216 kilometres) and offers breathtaking views of the Cascade Range, Mount Shasta, the California Central Valley, the Pacific Ocean, and the Santa Barbara coastline. The train journey is truly unforgettable, especially in summer, when you can see families enjoying the beach and feel like part of their group. I took it more for the experience of the journey itself than to reach a destination.

Pro tips: Take the upper berth on the left side of the train’s direction of travel for ocean views. Go early to occupy a seat in the train’s Sightseer Lounge.

 

Big Sur, CA

With its dramatic coastline and breathtaking landscapes, Big Sur is a must-visit destination for first-time visitors to California, especially those who love the great outdoors! Stretching along the scenic Highway 1, visitors will find a perfect blend of rugged natural beauty, outdoor adventure, and small towns — a great place to escape big city life.

One of the biggest draws to visiting Big Sur is experiencing the dramatic coastline. It includes iconic spots like Bixby Creek Bridge, one of the most photographed bridges in California, and McWay Falls, an 80-foot waterfall that cascades directly onto a pristine beach. The coastline has also been featured in plenty of movies and TV shows — it’s a celebrity all on its own!

For nature lovers, Big Sur offers plenty of hiking opportunities. To enjoy beautiful coastal views and possibly catch a glimpse of migrating whales and sea lions, head to Point Lobos Park. The park offers multiple trails that range from under a mile to three miles. Another great spot with longer trails is Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. In addition to hiking, the park also offers a campground, which is a great place to take a break.

Big Sur is a 90-mile stretch along Highway 1, starting at Carmel and ending in San Simeon. You can do the whole drive in one day, but it’s not recommended. It’s better to break the trip over a few days so you have time to stop and explore.

Hearst Castle, CA

Hearst Castle is one of the best places to visit in California. It reminds visitors of the state’s old Hollywood history. And is one of the few castles in the state, making it a must-see for first-time visitors.

Located above San Simeon, CA, it overlooks the Pacific Ocean near Paso Robles. This is one of California’s premiere wine producers. Surrounded by an enchanting landscape of rolling green hills, it makes its nickname obvious: “La Cuesta Encantada,” Spanish for “The Enchanted Hill.”

It was created as a residence for newspaper titan William Randolph Hearst. He was not only extremely wealthy but also friends and host to some of the most notable names of his time. They included Charlie Chaplin, Cary Grant, the Marx Brothers, Jean Harlow, Clark Gable, Winston Churchill, and Charles Lindbergh.

The castle consists of a main twin-towered building, three guesthouses, and 127 acres of gardens, fountains, and pools. Even though the Hearst family still visits, it is no longer a primary home but a California State Park open to visitors.

One of its most famous features is its pools. Modelled after ancient Roman baths, the Neptune and Roman Pools are gorgeous. His library is also astonishing. Most of his collection being first editions, often signed—some of them by Charles Dickens, his favorite author.

All of this you can see when visiting Hearst Castle. I advise you to do some research beforehand as they offer several tours focusing on different features of the estate. Such as the Grand Rooms Tour, Upstairs Suites Tour, Designing the Dream Tour, Hearst and Hollywood Tour, and more. I advise taking at least two tours. This way, you can get a good feel for the castle. Hearst Castle tours range from about 60 minutes to 2 hours, so a visit can fill at least half a day.

Before your tour, I recommend watching the 40-minute film ‘Hearst Castle: Building the Dream’ for a comprehensive overview of the castle’s construction. A bus takes you from the visitor center to the castle. Arrive early for your scheduled tour to ensure you make the bus.

Laguna Beach, CA

If you’re looking for a relaxing beach town that will really wow you with its natural beauty, then look no further than Laguna Beach in Orange County, California.

Beautiful beach options are abundant in Laguna with over 60 coves and beaches. Highlights include Treasure Island Beach, which is tucked behind the Montage Laguna Beach resort. It can be accessed by walking down a path that offers gorgeous views everywhere you look. Thousand Steps Beach is also worth a stop for its stunning views. Victoria Beach also uniquely has its own pirate tower, making it a popular photography spot.

When you’ve tired of the beach, the town itself is picturesque and quaint. There’s lots of art galleries, shops, wineries, and restaurants throughout. Stop at Laguna Art Museum, which features several exhibitions centering Californian art. And ride the free trolley to get around the town — it even will take you down south to neighboring Dana Point if you want to explore beyond Laguna.

Depending on when you visit, Laguna Beach also hosts a number of festivals and events throughout the year. These include Pageant of The Masters, a unique tableaux vivant (living pictures) experience, and Sawdust Art Festival, a giant event showcasing art and craftsmanship from local artists.

It’s impossible not to fall in love with California after a visit to Laguna. This beach town is well worth a stop on any California itinerary.

Los Angeles, CA

Los Angeles in California is often thought of as being the capital city of California, but the capital is actually Sacramento. But Los Angeles is a capital city, a capital city of fun. Yep, Los Angeles offers visitors lots of theme parks, relaxing beaches, great shopping and is home to Hollywood and plenty of stars. 

Two of the best places to visit in Los Angeles for first time visitors is Disneyland and Universal Studios. Followed by the Stars Walk of Fame and everyone wants to see the Hollywood sign. And perhaps spend a day at the beach then enjoy activities on Santa Monica Pier.

One of the best way to see Los Angeles, particularly if it is your first visit to the city, is to jump on the Los Angeles Hop on Hop off bus. I know, I know, it is very touristy, but it will take you to all the best places in LA to see. I always do the full loop first and then I know which places I want visit in length.

San Francisco is one of the most iconic and worldly-famous towns in California, and in the United-States in general. Located on the Pacific coast, it’s located in the mid-north of the state of California.

This city stands out for its many attributes. First, its location between the ocean and San Francisco Bay is extraordinary. The city is surrounded by water on all sides except south!

Secondly, it’s very hilly, built both on the seashore and on the heights. This makes for beautiful vistas, steep streets and an old tramway that’s particularly popular with visitors.

One street that might be just as popular as the DUMBO Manhattan Bridge view in New York City, is Lombard street. It’s so steep that you get the impression that the houses aren’t stable and that the cars are going to tip over.

Last but not least, when visiting it, you feel like you’ve already been there because it is pictured in many movies. From the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, Pier 39 and its thousands of sea lions, Alcatraz Island and its old prison…

By the way, you can actually visit the Alcatraz prison through a boat tour departing in San Francisco. The city is big enough to spend a few days to a week there without getting bored.

If it’s your first time in California or if you’re just looking for a romantic road trip, you’ve got to check out Temecula. It’s this quaint little town tucked between LA and San Diego, and it’s got such a great vibe.

The big draw here is the wine country. Imagine rolling hills covered in vineyards, with more than 40 wineries to choose from. Whether you’re into wine or just want to chill in the countryside, places like Wilson Creek or South Coast Winery are perfect for a tasting.

But Temecula isn’t just about the wine. You’ll want to spend some time in Old Town Temecula too. It has an awesome mix of old-school charm with 1800s buildings, quirky shops, and great spots to eat. It’s the kind of place where you can wander around, find something unique in a little boutique, and then grab a bite at a local restaurant.

And if you’re up for something really special, try a hot air balloon ride at sunrise. Floating over the vineyards with the morning light—seriously, it’s unreal.

Yosemite is a beautiful natural park that draws millions of visitors each year and is one of the famous landmarks in California. May to September are the most popular months to visit Yosemite. Valleys, waterfalls, giant Sequoia trees, hiking trails, Yosemite has it all. It is a major attraction for any first-time visitor to the west coast of the USA.

Some of the best experiences to be had at Yosemite national park include a visit to the Glacier Point. This has stunning vistas and the view of the Half Dome without any hiking whatsoever. You can enjoy the Lower Yosemite Falls, another popular spot. There are several hiking trails in this national park for outdoor lovers. Sentinel Dome hike is an easy hike with great views of the Half Dome and El Capitan. You can visit Mariposa Grove for the giant sequoia trees.

I would recommend driving down to Yosemite with your own car. It will give you flexibility to cover the large area of the park. You need to plan ahead as to where to stay inside the park and what spots / trails to cover. There are a few hotels that get booked much in advance. If you are going with a group of friends / family, I recommend booking a mountain lodge or cabin within the park on VRBO. These are spacious and more budget friendly.

Are you ready for some California Dreaming?

 

Now you know some of the best places to visit on a California holiday, I’m sure you will be adding them to your California itinerary. I know I am.

 

I bet you have heard about the ‘Wonders of the World’ but like me, could not list them off the top of your head. Well don’t worry, I’ve put together a post listing the wonders of the world so you know what they are, where they are, and how to visit them. In fact, you may have visited some already and didn’t realise. 

While researching this post I was getting different answers to which are the wonders of the world. What I found was there are 3 lists of world wonders. The Ancient Wonders of the World, the New Wonders of the World and the Natural Wonders of the World. And here they are listed for your convenience, and mine, providing an overview of what the wonders of the world are, where the wonders of the are and how to visit each wonder of the world. Here goes.

 

Definition of a Wonder of the World

 

Before I get into each world wonder, what makes a wonder of the world? The most succinct definition of a wonder of the world I found was ‘something remarkable in the world’. Things taken into consideration include time span over human history, artistic and cultural values and universally recognisable. And when you read the lists of the wonders of the world following, I think you will agree with me that each and every one of them are something remarkable. I personally would add even more to the lists as there are some incredible places to visit in the world. But for the moment, I am concentrating on the wonders of the world.

 

Who Decided Certain Places Should be Wonders of the World?

 

My research on this gave a few different answers but consistent in these answers were:

These Seven Wonders of the Ancient World were originally chosen by Hellenic travelers. These travellers were passing through Persian, Babylonian, and Egyptian lands and made careful note of these structures in travel guides, artwork, and poems with the list put together by Greek historian Herodotus.

In 2000 a Swiss foundation launched a campaign to determine the New Seven Wonders of the World. This was because the original list was compiled in the 2nd century BCE and only the Pyramids of Giza remain. 

The New7Wonders Foundation in Switzerland decided upon the natural wonders of the world list. Criteria of the wonder was it had to be completely natural and not human made.

Of these 7 ancient wonders of the world only the Great Pyramid of Giza exist.

The Great Pyramid of Giza is the largest Egyptian pyramid that was built c. 2600BC. You’ll find it situated at the north eastern end of the line of the three main pyramids at Giza. It served as the tomb of the pharaoh Khufu who ruled during the fourth dynasty. It is the most famous monument of the Giza pyramids as it is the largest and is the only ancient wonder of the world that is largely intact. 

Where are the Pyramids of Giza: the three Pyramids of Giza are located on a rocky plateau on the west bank of the Nile River in northern Egypt. 

Best time to visit: The best time to visit the pyramids is during Egypt’s winter months from November to February as the temperatures are milder with warm days and cool nights. Of course you can visit other times of the year however, the heat can be stifling during the warmer months.

How to visit: For independent budget travellers you can reach the Pyramids of Giza by catching a metro to Giza station, then take a 14-minute bus ride to the Necropolis. You can also catch a taxi or Uber from Cairo taking around 30 to 35 minutes.

Accommodation in Cairo: There is not much accommodation near Giza, though I did find this option. Most stay in accommodation in Cairo, check out these options.

Tour options: There are plenty of tours available that will get you to the Pyramids of Giza, some are half day while others are full-day including lunch.

Chang Cheng, or the Great Wall, extends along the northern boundary of China in an east to the west line for over 8,000 km (4970 miles). The majority of the existing wall dates back to the 13th century Ming Dynasty. It was built to protect against raids and invasions of various nomadic groups.

Best time to visit: You can visit the Great Wall of China anytime, though the best times are late March to May, and September to early November when the temperatures are more comfortable.

How to visit: Visiting will depend on which section of the wall you choose to visit. You can access the Great Wall of China at many sections in the Hebei and Gansu province and from Beijing at the Badging and Mutianyu sections. You can get to The Great Wall via train, bus, or a pre-booked car (either a planned tour or just pre-booked transfers).  

Tour options: There are plenty of tours available that will get you to the Great Wall of China.

2. Petra, Jordan

Petra in Jordan dates from 312 BC and when you visit you will understand why it is included as one of the new 7 wonders of the world. You might recognise it from the Indiana Jones movie! See for yourself The Siq a 1.2km long canyon that opens up to many marvels including royal tombs. 

Where is Petra: Once a thriving trading centre, Petra is located amid rugged desert canyons and mountains in what is now the southwestern corner of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

Best time to visit: You can visit Petra anytime of the the year however, the best time to visit Petra is during the spring and autumn months when temperatures are more pleasant and crowds are smaller.

How to visit: The easiest way to get to Jordan is to fly into the capital city of Amman. Petra is located 230km south of Amman, roughly a 3-hour drive away. You can rent a car and drive to Petra which is the best option or take a bus but public transport in Jordan overall is limited.

3. The Colosseum, Italy

Next on the list of new wonders of the world is The Colosseum in Rome, Italy. It is one of the most recognisable of Rome’s classic buildings and one of the best things to see and do in Rome. was the scene of many gladiator competitions and had a seating capacity of some 60,000 spectators.  Take time to see the vast complex of remains of buildings from seam 2000 years ago. 

Where is The Colosseum: You will find The Colosseum in Rome, Italy.

Best time to visit: You can visit Rome anytime of the the year however, the best time to visit Rome is during the spring and autumn months when temperatures are more pleasant and crowds are less. Summer can see hot temperatures and plenty of crowds.  

How to visit: Depending on where you are staying in Rome (check accommodation options here), you could walk or you can take a metro to reach the Colosseum in the heart of the city. The nearest metro station is “Colosseo” on the B Line. 

Tour options: There are plenty of tours available that will get you around Rome, that will include a visit to the Colosseum. A Rome Hop-on Hop-off bus tour will stop at this famous site. Or you can take a taxi to the reach Colosseum.

 

4. Chichen Itza, Yucatan, Mexico

Dating back to 600AD are the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza. The sacred Mayan site is a complex with a number of buildings and cenotes to explore. The most famous of the buildings would be El Castillo or the Temple of Kukukan. As you walk around the complex you will see the Great Ballcourt where Mayan sportsmen competed, Temple of the Warriors and the Skull Platform.

Where is Chichen Itza: Chichen Itza is located in the Yucatan province of Mexico.

Best time to visit: The best time to visit Chichen Itza is during the dry season, which falls between November and April. In the wet, summer season, temperatures rise much higher, and the climate is much more humid making it unbearable for those not use to this type of heat. In order to beat the crowds get there early or mid-afternoon when crowds are leaving. Try to avoid going there on Sundays when it is free for Mexicans to enter. 

How to visit: Chichen Itza is located in Yucatan with one of the closest tourist destinations of Cancun some 2 hours drive away. You can hire a car to visit, go on the new train or on a tour.

Accommodation: Most don’t stay in the tourist towns and catch transport or a tour to the ruins. Check out options for accommodation in Cancun here.

Tour options: There are plenty of tours available that will get you to Chichen Itza. I organised one from my hotel on arrival in Cancun at my hotel’s tour desk and I was lucky there was availability as these tours book up early, so I suggest you book a tour online. 

 

5. Machu Picchu, Peru

Machu Picchu in Peru dates back to the 15th Century and is often referred to as the ‘Lost City of the Incas’. The term Machu Picchu means ‘old mountain’ and this Inca citadel is situated on a mountain ridge 2,430 metres (7,970 feet) above sea level making the location of this world wonder spectacular. The Incas built Machu Picchu around 1450 AD but then abandoned it. The ruins left today are the size of a village with three primary structures to visit. The  Intihuatana, the Temple of the Sun, and the Temple of the Three Windows. 

Where is Machu Picchu: You will find Machu Picchu in the Eastern Cordillera of southern Peru on a mountain ridge.

Best time to visit: One of the best times to visit Machu Picchu is April and May after the rainy season has passed. This time isn’t as crowded as July to August when more than 3000 people visit the site daily between 10am to 2pm. 

How to reach: The easiest way to get from Cusco to Machu Picchu is to take the train to Aguas Calientes. Buses run regularly from Aguas Calientes to the site, and back. It takes about 25 minutes one way.

Tour options: Buy your tickets to Machu Picchu in advance due to its popularity. Don’t expect to reach the site and expect any tickets to visit be available. While purchasing your ticket choose your time slot to visit. Morning time slot is between 6am to 12pm while the afternoon slop is between 12pm to 5.30pm. There are plenty of tour operators offering tours.

 

6. Taj Mahal, Agra, India

Who doesn’t remember the image of Princess Diana sitting alone at the Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal is one of the most photographed places of all the 7 wonders of the world. It was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. Made of white marble it stands on a raised marble platform at the end of an ornamental garden. 

Where is the Taj Mahal: Taj Mahal is located in the city of Agra, within a state named Uttar Pradesh. Agra is well connected to Indian cities and forms part of India’s Golden Triangle which is one of India’s most popular tourist routes.

Best time to visit the Taj Mahal: If wanting to visit the Taj Mahal in the most pleasant weather conditions then the best time to visit the Taj Mahal will be between November to February. You can also visit during the should seasons of October and March as. Suggest to avoid the hot crowded summer season and the monsoon months.

How to reach: Once you arrive in Agra, the Taj Mahal is easily accessible by foot. Read my post on how you can visit the Taj Mahal.

7. Christ The Redeemer, Brazil

One of the icons of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil has to be one of the seven wonders of the world – the statue of Christ the Redeemer. Towering over the city atop Corcovado Mountain, the statue is visible from all over Rio de Janeiro. Built between 1926 and 1931, it stands a massive 30 metres (124 foot) tall. From the top there is a panoramic view over Rio, from the Maracana and Sambadrome to Sugar Loaf Mountain, the lagoon, and Copacabana Beach. 

Best time to visit Christ The Redeemer: Summertime which is December until March is peak season for Rio de Janeiro and when large crowds visit. September and October (spring time) are the best months to visit Rio de Janeiro as temperatures are mild yet still warm for the beaches. April, May, June (autumn (fall) months) is also a beautiful time to visit Rio.

How to reach: The Cog train is the most famous and scenic route to reach Christ the Redeemer. The train takes you through Atlantic Forest to the top of Corcovado Mountain. Then there is a shuttle van that goes to the base of Christ the Redeemer. From the base there is a series of lifts and open-air escalators taking you up to the statue. If you are fit and adventurous, you can hike to reach Christ the Redeemer taking some 2 hours to reach the top.

The Aurora Borealis, also commonly known as the northern lights, is a natural light display in Earth’s sky. People come from all over the world to see the display of light. There are many countries to see the lights, Alaska, Canada, Iceland, Greenland, the Faroe Islands, Scandinavia, Scotland and Russia. 

 

2. Grand Canyon, USA

A visit to the Grand Canyon in Arizona, will show you just why it is one of 7 natural wonders of the world. The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided canyon carved by the Colorado River over thousands of years. It is some 446km (277 miles) long and about 29km (18 miles) wide with some canyon walls over a mile (6,000 feet or 1857 metres) in depth. It’s hard to describe the sheer size until you see it for yourself. 

Best time to visit the Grand Canyon: Anytime is a good time to visit the Grand Canyon however, to avoid the hordes of tourists and the heat of the summer, best times to visit the Grand Canyon are March through May and September through November.

How to visit the Grand Canyon: The best way to visit the Grand Canyon is to drive as you will be able to visit different parts of the canyon. Check out pricing and availability of cars here. The closest cities are Pheonix and Las Vegas. But a fun way to get to the Grand Canyon is to take the the Grand Canyon Railway, which makes daily round-trips between Williams, Arizona, and the Grand Canyon Depot.

3. Great Barrier Reef, Australia

The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef system. It stretches over 2,300 km (1430 miles) along the coast of Queensland, Australia. It is home to some 3000 individual reefs and coral cays, some 100 islands and thousands of marine species. 

Best time to visit the Great Barrier Reef: Anytime is a good time to visit the Great Barrier Reef however, during the summer months (December to February) days can be hot, humid with a cyclone or two. Best time to visit is during Australia’s winter months when the temperatures of nice, yet great for swimming, snorkelling and scuba diving.

How to visit the Great Barrier: The best way to visit the Great Barrier Reef is from one of the major cities along Australia’s coastline. These include Brisbane, the Whitsundays, Mackay, Townsville and Cairns. You will catch a boat out on to the reef. One of the best islands to visit in the Great Barrier Reef is Green Island off the coast of Cairns.

4. Harbor of Rio de Janiero, Brazil

Harbor of Rio de Janeiro is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it is the shape of the bay and surrounding area that helped designate it as one of the 7 natural wonders of the world. The harbor was formed by erosion from the Atlantic Ocean and this cat has formed the world’s largest harbour surrounded by granite monolith mountains including iconic Sugarloaf Mountain and other landmarks like Christ The Redeemer, one of the 7 wonders of the world. Plus has some famous beaches like Ipanema and Cpacabana. 

Best time to visit  Anytime is a good time to visit the harbor, but it also depends on what you want to do in the harbor. If wanting to visit the beaches you will be looking for the best beach weather which could be during the summer months when there are loads of tourists and locals spending time on the beach. Other seasons are great to visit also as the weather is more pleasant for sightseeing with less crowds.

How to visit the Harbor of Rio de Janiero: Rio de Janiero is the city around the harbor so depending where you are staying, you can walk to the bay. 

 

5. Mount Everest, Nepal

Next on this list of 7 natural wonders of the world is Mount Everest. It is the world’s highest mountain with an elevation of some 8,848.86 metres. And you will find it in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas with the China–Nepal border running across its summit point.

Best time to visit Mount Everest: Spring (March to May) is regarded as the best season for a Mount Everest expedition. This could be to the base camp or to climb it. To climb, you will need to go on a tour and be an experienced climber on snow and ice. 

Where to See Mount Everest: Being so tall, the mountain can be seen from many places but the best views of Mount Everest are accessible from the Nepalese side. 

Mt Everest Tours: Not all of us are climbers, so an alternative is a trek to Base Camp.

 

6. Parícutin Volcano, Mexico

I had never heard of Paricutin Volcano until writing this list of wonders of the world. I discovered this volcano was added to the list because Paricutin Volcano is the youngest volcano in the world and its birth was witnessed by modern human kind. And apparently it formed as a result of a nine-year eruption, from 1943 to 1952, that began in an open field. It is now classified as an extinct volcano, yet is still hot as rainwater reacts to the heat of volcano and steam rises. You will find it in western Michoacán state, west-central Mexico.

How to visit: You can visit Paricutin Volcano and even climb it. The sides are covered in very loose volcanic gravel making for a slow climb but I’m told the views of the volcano and of the lava flows over the surrounding countryside are awesome!

Tour options: You can walk to the top of Paricutin Volcano however, many go on horse back. Check out this tour.

 

7. Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, Africa

A visit to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe has been on my Africa bucket list for a while and I plan to tick it off my list soon. If looking for something to see and do in Africa besides going on a safari, this is definitely one of the best places in Africa to visit. Victoria Falls is the name of a town in western Zimbabwe which is the gateway to the massive waterfall of the same name. It is here where the Zambezi River plummets over a cliff to a series of gorges below. 

How to get to Victoria Falls: There are daily flights operating between Johannesburg Airport and Livingstone Airport (Zambia) to Victoria Falls Airport (Zimbabwe). The flight is about 90 minutes in duration. Both airports are then about a 20 minute drive to/from the Falls.

You can reach the castle on foot for a nice hike or take an elevator that has been excavated into the rock across from El Postiguet beach.

To get the full experience of Alicante, take a stroll down Explanada de España, a nearly 600-meter-long promenade lined with palm trees and 6.5 million marble tiles. Don’t leave Alicante without swimming and sunbathing at Playa del Postiguet, conveniently located near the city center.

For a truly unique experience, visit Alicante during the Bonfires of St John Festival (Hogueras de San Juan), held on the eve of the summer solstice to mark the arrival of summer. During the festival, the city transforms with music, fireworks, and traditional food. On the last night, you can experience a truly unique tradition – the burning of hogueras – enormous cardboard and wooden figures.

Barcelona, the cosmopolitan city in the Catalonia region of Spain, is known for its art and architecture. This Mediterranean city has excellent beaches and good weather. You will find the best of art, gastronomy and sports. 

It is a great option amongst European cities to visit in spring or early summer. The Basílica de la Sagrada Familia with its fantastical architecture is the top attraction. This 130-year labour of love, dreamt up by Antoni Gaudí, is one of the most visited. Barcelona has other attractions by Gaudi – Park Guell, Casa Milà, and Casa Batlló.

The city is packed with attractions, museums, tapas bars, and restaurants. Picasso Museum is one of the more famous museums. 

Palau de la Música will make your senses stir and take note of its architecture. You should spend an evening roaming around La Rambla, the most famous street in the city, lined with shops, flower stands, and artworks. 

Barcelona has miles of beaches, from Sant Sebastià to Llevant for families to enjoy. Many of the major sights are concentrated in the “old city” such as the cobblestoned Gothic Quarter and the medieval Born district. This sunny Spanish city is walkable, so getting around is uncomplicated. You can also get around using Barcelona’s smooth public transportation system.

Cordoba is one of the most beautiful cities in Spain Andalucia region, just an hour by train from Malaga. It’s packed with historic sites, Moorish architecture, and buzzing tapas bars. One of the joys of Cordoba is that it’s a small city, so you can easily explore on foot.

The main attraction is the Mezquita, which sits in the heart of the old town. Once a mosque and then a cathedral, today the complex brings together two very different architectural and religious styles to create an eye-popping building full of arches, columns, and chapels. Book your tickets in advance to avoid the long queues.

Another popular thing to do is visit the Cordoba Patios Festival, which runs in May each year. This is when several residential properties in the city open up their flower-filled patios to visitors – it’s a unique tradition that goes back many years. Some courtyards are open all year round so you won’t miss out if you’re not here in May.

Other points of interest include the old Roman Bridge and the Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianos. The latter is a 14^th-century palace with gorgeous gardens and panoramic city views. After sightseeing, refuel at one of the many tapas bars in the old centre – try the Cordoban Salmorejo, a chilled tomato soup that’s like gazpacho, only better.

San Sebastián or Donostia is a city in Northern Spain, close to the border with France. Donostia is the Basque name and San Sebastián the Spanish name. The city is located in the Basque Autonomous Community on the coast of the Bay of Biscay.

The city is situated around La Concha Bay, with on each end a hill, namely Monte Urgull and Monte Igueldo. From both hills you’ll have grand views on the city. The combination of beaches, a beautiful old town and Basque cuisine is what makes a visit to San Sebastián a must on any France Spain Portugal road trip.

There are 3 beaches in San Sebastián; Playa la Concha, Playa de Ondarreta and Playa Zurriola. They’re crowded in the Summer months with locals and tourists alike. Finding a spot to lay down is possible, however you will be close to other people. The atmosphere is however relaxed.

Definitely try out pintxos, part of the Basque cuisine local to this area. Pintxos are a kind of tapas, they’re usually served on a slice of baguette with a skewer in them. They’re delicious and can be of high culinary quality.

Visit Parte Vieja, which is the old town of San Sebastián. It’s situated at the foot of Monte Urgull. It’s a small and cozy historical area.

At last take the Igeldoko Funikularra to visit Monte Igueldo. There’s a small theme park on top and you’ll have excellent views on the city and the bay.

 

El Bosque

The picturesque little town of El Bosque is located on the hills of Andalucia at about 287 metres above sea level. It is a gateway to the nature reserve – The Parque Natural de la Sierra de Grazalema.

There are various scenic drives from El Bosque on mountainous roads to Grazalema and to Zahara de la Sierra. The drives have various stunning ‘miradors’ – (lookouts) to get panoramic views of the valleys and mountains. The popular ones are Puerto de las Palomas, Puerto de los Acebuches and Puerto del Boyar. Layered mountain views are best seen at sunset.

El Bosque also has a good trout farm (the biggest southern fish farm in Europe), which is worth visiting.

Ronda, the famous historic town, which is perched dramatically above a deep gorge, is just an hour’s drive from El Bosque. Another choice for a day trip is Ubrique – a beautiful white village next to Rio Ubrique just a short drive from El Bosque.

White villages, forests and unique rocks can be viewed and explored through drives and hikes.

The ancient port city of Cádiz is just an hour’s drive from El Bosque. Excellent seafood, of which blue tuna and oysters are local specialities and the special Blue Sherry wine from Jerez are worth trying out.

El Bosque is the perfect base for those who love hikes, scenic drives and day trips. 

 

Estepona

One of the most beautiful places to visit in Spain is located in the second largest comunidad autónoma, Andalucía. Located only 45 minutes from Marbella and the same in the other direction to the border with Gibraltar, Estepona is an absolute gem to be found on the Costa del Sol.

Accurately known as the ‘Garden of the Costa del Sol’, this picturesque town seems to have something in bloom whatever time of year that you visit. Whether you visit for the town’s impressive Orquidarium (with an indoor waterfall, no less) or for the many charming streets lined with colourful flowerpots, there is sure to be something in Estepona for everyone.

Make sure to visit Plaza de las Flores, Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, Parque del Carmen, Parque del Calvario, as well as seeing some of the many impressive murals brightening the façades of buildings. And the best part is, you’ll find your own favourite spots just by wandering around and seeing what you find.

Estepona brings the beauty of the Costa del Sol without having the influx of tourists that better known destinations like Marbella or Málaga have. It’s an absolute must visit in this region of Spain!

Caves and Troglodytes’ Houses in Guadix

 

Guadix is a small town located in Andalucia in Southern Spain. It sits at an altitude of 913m a.s.l at the northern foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Guadix is a great destination for a day trip from cities like Granada or Almeria and without a doubt, it’ll be one of the most unique places you’ll visit in Spain!

Guadix is best known for two things: caves and troglodytes’ houses. Seeing them will take you on a trip to another planet and the charming old town where you can easily spend hours wandering among its streets and getting to know every corner.

Exploring the Cave Houses Neighborhood, Barrio de las Cuevas, is definitely the best thing to do in Guadix. It’s a fascinating area where thousands of people, known as troglodytes, live in about 2000 underground cave houses. Currently, Guadix is home to the largest number of troglodyte houses in Europe! Additionally, you’ll also find great viewpoints with magnificent views over the surroundings.

In Guadix’s old town don’t miss places like Cathedral, square Plaza de la Constitución, Alcazaba, ruins of the Roman Theater, and some lovely viewpoints like Mirador de la Magdalena.

As of now, this Guadix is also considered a hidden gem destination mostly known to Spaniards and relatively unknown to tourists. Thanks to that no huge crowds are guaranteed!

 

Girona

The well-preserved medieval old town of Girona, a true gem, has gained fame after being featured as the city of Braavos in Game of Thrones. The Baroque stairs of Girona Cathedral, used to shoot the infamous walk of shame scene in GOT season 6, are just one of the many stunning features of this town.

Go to the popular Jewish Quarter, and you will find the winding alleys and narrow lanes seen in the GOT. The Jewish Quarter, known as El Call, will take you 500 years back. The amalgamation of architecture and history draws millions of tourists here. Stop by the Museu d’Història dels Jueus to know more about this part of the city.

Take a walk along the city’s eastern border, where medieval walls stand tall even after centuries. Go to the top of the walls and enjoy the panoramic view. Spend some time sipping coffee in one of the cafes around Plaça Independencia, as this lively square is the perfect place for watching the world go by.

The views of the city and mountains beyond from here are simply unforgettable.

However, Granada is more than just the Alhambra. Stroll along its narrow cobbled-stone streets lined with orange trees, walk past cute whitewashed houses, and see lively squares filled with soulful music for a real feel of Granda. The city centre and Albaicin neighbourhood are perfect for such a saunter.

Madrid is Spain’s capital and is located in the country’s center. Its central location makes it an excellent starting point for exploring other destinations. You can also easily make a day trip to neighboring cities like Toledo and Segovia.

Madrid’s rich history and bustling environment set it apart from other Spanish cities. It is an epicenter for shopping, a delicious culinary scene, vibrant nightlife, and diverse neighborhoods.

While often compared with the equally famous city of Barcelona, Madrid has a more authentic feel than Barcelona. If that’s what you prefer more than an international city, Madrid needs to be on your Spanish itinerary!

Madrid has so many attractions that you’ll likely need a second visit. The best things to do are visit El Retiro Park, the Royal Palace, Gran Vía, and the Templo de Debod.

An added convenience is that the city has many efficient transportation options to get you to the different highlights. Whether you take Uber, the metro, or the buses, you’ll have no problem reaching your destination.

The capital city is also a haven for art lovers. The famous Prado Museum holds thousands of paintings and sculptures from the 12th to 20th centuries! Reina Sofía National Art Museum is another museum featuring work from Dali and Picasso.

 

Marbella

Located on the Costa del Sol, Marbella is one of the best places to visit in Spain. It is a 45-minute drive from Malaga Airport and offers a different experience than Malaga.

The town is the perfect getaway for an upscale experience. It is well-known for having the most expensive port in Spain and incredible 5 and 4-star resorts that even celebrities stay at.

However, there is more beyond Puerto Banus and the Golden Mile. You can have a more authentic experience by visiting its charming historic centre, home to white-painted buildings, narrow streets and beautiful plazas.

In addition, Marbella has many awarded blue flag beaches that can be enjoyed in the summer and off-season, as the town has a microclimate that protects it from the cold and over 300 sunny days. 

If you love hiking, there are many nearby hiking trails. You can do the Benahavis Riverwalk in the summer or the La Concha hike off-season when the temperatures are more suitable for walking.

Lastly, another reason to visit Marbella is its fantastic day trips. Whether you love visiting wineries or the typical Andalusian white villages, there are plenty of excursions within a short drive. I personally love the Ronda to Marbella day trip, where you can visit the historic centre of Ronda, eat tapas and try some of the best Malaga wines.

Although it is a popular summer destination, Marbella in winter is a good idea for travellers looking for a winter sun getaway.

 

Montserrat Mountain

Montserrat is a special place.  The name “Montserrat” literally translates as “serrated mountain,” and refers to the jagged peaks of the mountain that look like the teeth of a saw.  This spectacular mountain range is an hour from Barcelona and is one of the best places to visit in Spain for its natural beauty and religious significance.

Montserrat is home to Montserrat Monastery. This is a Benedictine abbey that houses a statue of the Black Madonna known as La Moreneta and is an important pilgrimage site.  There are lots of things to do in Montserrat but visiting the Black Madonna statue is one of the most popular for tourists and pilgrims alike. The statue dates back to the late 12^th century and is said to grant wishes and to heal people who touch her.  She is kept in a Basilica dedicated to her, in a chapel that looks out over the basilica above the altar.  The Montserrat Boys Choir which sings here is one of the oldest in the world.

Aside from the Basilica and statue, there is also a museum at Montserrat that has a wonderful collection of religious art. Including Penitent Saint Jerome by Caravaggio, and of works by Catalan artists and artists who have been inspired by the Catalan landscape.

Montserrat is also popular for hikers. There are various trails criss-crossing the mountains, all of which have stunning views of Montserrat and the surrounding countryside.  The Sant Joan Funicular whisks you further up the mountain for more incredible views of the monastery and the mountain peaks behind it.

 

Ronda

No visit to Spain should be complete without a visit to Ronda, one of the many ‘pueblos blancos’ (white villages) that Andalucia is famous for. 

A 90 minute drive inland from Malaga, Ronda is a world away from the beach resorts of the nearby Costa del Sol. Clinging to the edge of El Tajo gorge the town is split in two by the Guadalevin river with the Puente Nuevo (new bridge) spanning the gorge. 

The Puente Nuevo is one of Andalucia’s most recognisable landmarks and the views from the top across the Serrania de Ronda are spectacular. However, if you want the picture postcard photo of the bridge you’ll need to head down into the gorge. 

There’s an official gorge walk, Desfiladero del Tajo. This involves a short hike on a well maintained path to a viewing platform at the base of the bridge. If you have the time and energy it’s well worth hiking to the bottom of the gorge.

It may only be a small town but there are so many things to see and do in Ronda. Walking around the old town you’ll find something new around every corner. A cute square to stop for a drink and some tapas, churches and historical buildings galore, and several museums. In the new town there’s the bullring which has an interesting museum where you can learn about the history of bullfighting, even if you don’t agree with it. 

Ronda also has plenty of bars and restaurants so you can work up an appetite sightseeing knowing that you definitely won’t go hungry. 

 

Santiago de Compostela

One of the best places to visit in Spain is the city of Santiago de Compostela. Found in the northwest corner of Spain, Santiago de Compostela is the bustling capital city of the Galicia region. It is most famous for being the ending point of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route. 

Pilgrims walk for days, weeks, or months to stand before the Cathedral de Santiago de Compostela. The Cathedral de Santiago de Compostela is said to burial place of Saint James and pilgrims have been walking here since the Middle Ages.

Besides the Camino de Santiago, the city itself offers many things to see and do. The Old Town is a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with tapas bars, museums, and significant historical buildings tied to the Camino.

The city boasts green spaces, inviting parks, and viewpoints that will take your breath away. Do visit the Abastos Market to sample traditional cuisine and fresh seafood.

To get a real taste of the city, try to spend at least 2 days in Santiago de Compostela. With more time, get out and experience some of the best day trips from the city.

Santiago de Compostela is surrounded by green hillsides and charming small towns. An unforgettable experience is a day trip to the coast to appreciate the white sand beaches on the shores of the frigid turquoise waters of the Atlantic Ocean. More noteworthy things to do include visiting the vineyards of the Rías Baixas, spending time in the numerous authentic fishing villages, or hiking up a mystical mountain.

From exploring a fairy-tale castle to sampling some delicious local cuisines, there are plenty of intriguing things to do in Segovia to make you fall in love with this charming city. Furthermore, the Old Town of Segovia is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

One of the main tourist attractions of Segovia is the iconic Roman Aqueduct – an engineering marvel with two tiers of arches built around the middle of the first century. This impressive structure once carried water from the Frío River to the city. This city is also home to a magnificent fortress, The Alcazar – believed to be one of the inspirations for Walt Disney’s Cinderella Castle. Throughout history, it has served as a royal palace, a state prison, and a military academy. Climb to the top of the tower for stunning panoramic views of the city and surrounding landscape. Next, take a short stroll to Mirador de la Pradera de San Marcos for a breathtaking view of the Alcazar. Segovia Cathedral, the last Gothic cathedral of Spain, lies in the Plaza Mayor. This 16th-century cathedral boasts stunning stained glass windows, intricate altarpieces, and a tranquil cloister.

Seville

Seville is located inland in the Andalucia region of South-West Spain. It’s a small but beautiful city full of charm, with streets lined with orange trees. The size, beauty, culture and the many things to do make Seville the perfect city break

The must-see places include the Cathedral, the Royal Palace known as Real Alcazar, and The Plaza de Espana. Each provides historical interest as well as being pretty places to visit. A more modern must-see is ‘Las Setas’ which is a mushroom shaped wooden structure in the Old Town. From the top you can see a fantastic panoramic view of the city.

Seville is famous for Flamenco and you will find a range of flamenco bars known as ‘tablaos’ offering evening performances. You will see street performers dancing on wooden boards all around the city. This can give you a flavour of what to expect but don’t miss out on a show as they can be mesmerising. If you are really keen you can even visit the Flamenco museum.

Andalucia is one of the regions where tapas is thought to have originated, and the food in Seville does not disappoint. Whether you want traditional tapas bars or upmarket options with a modern twist, you will find them all in Seville.

Seville is easy to reach by Spain’s excellent train network so can be easily combined with a visit to Madrid, Granada or Malaga.

 

Valencia

Valencia is a must-visit in Spain and a unique destination on the east coast with its modern city of Arts and Sciences and the quaint old town. You should spend at least 2 days in Valencia to see the most prominent attractions. Spend at least half a day at the City of Arts and Sciences, the futuristic architecture is incredible and just walking around the recreational area between the buildings is great with the beautiful waterscapes. In the old town, don’t miss out on the cathedral and make sure you walk up to the rooftop to enjoy the views of the square below and Valencia’s skyline.

Another site you should visit is the Silk Exchange which is not only an architectural wonder, but also an important historical site reminiscing of the times when Valencia’s silk trade flourished. Throughout the old town, there are plenty of restaurants, bars, and straight out beautiful buildings, so make sure you make time for just walking around and sitting down with a drink or some tapas to take in the surroundings. Valencia is also the birthplace of the famous Spanish rice dish, paella, so you can’t leave the city without trying it at least once. You even find vegan paella, so there are no excuses.

Clear, bright, and blue sparkling waters are the main attraction in Spain’s Costa Brava. This famous coast, located just a short ride away from Barcelona, is a haven when the city gets too hot and crowded. Locals flock here when they need a break from the tourists crowds.

There are endless villages to explore in Costa Brava – Cadaques, home to Salvador Dali’s house and Park Cap De Creus, is one of my favorites. Nearby you’ll find his museum in Figueres. There are also other fishing villages, like Blanes and Palamós.

These towns are filled with delicious seafood, incredible coastlines for hiking, and of course, plenty of beach days. Some of these villages date back to 575 BC, so it’s no surprise you can top off your beach days with loads of history and architectural wonders.

I have travelled the world all my life thanks to my dad who worked for an airline. But it was when I was in my 20s that I left Australia and first moved abroad on my own. Pros of Living Abroad

 

1. Learn to Adapt

 

One of the biggest pros of living abroad, and why I have put it first is learning how to adapt. At home you know what to expect from life, you may be in a rut and feel complacent, but when you move abroad to live and work in a different country, there is so much to learn and adapt to. There is a different language, culture, food, types of work and different style of accommodation – and you need to adapt to them. Adapting to your surroundings and making do with what you have is one big life skill you learn when you move abroad.

 

2. Experience a New Culture

 

One of the biggest advantages of moving abroad to live in another country is that you get to immerse yourself in a new culture. You get to learn more about one culture and develop a greater understanding of how the people of your new country live. You develop a different perspective while living abroad which is wonderful for expanding your views. It can make you more open minded to how people do different things, eat different things, talk differently and have different customs to yourself. And this is a big part of moving abroad to live in another country.

 

3. Learn a New Language

 

I grew up in Australia where we all spoke English, but as Australia becomes more multicultural, more languages are being spoken. So in schools, you can learn different languages. When you go into high school, you are given a taste of a number of languages and then you can choose one to progress with throughout your schooling – if you so wish. I decided I would learn French, and this stood me in good stead as I visited France and was able to say hello, order food and pay for it without much trouble.

When I moved to the UK to live and work, I found myself visiting many European countries from my London base. I discovered that it is good to know a little of the language of the country I am visiting as it helps with immersion. Locals are more likely to spend time chatting to you if you have tried to speak to them in their own language. I found it much easier to learn a language when you’re abroad speaking it. It is definitely an advantage to learning the language of the country you have chosen to live in. It just helps you to settle into your new life living abroad if you make the effort.

 

4. Try Different Foods

 

One of the best pros of moving and living abroad is trying new foods – I just love the Paella I discovered in Spain

 

I think this is my favourite thing about living abroad – trying new and different foods. When I lived in the UK, I made it my mission to eat all of the local British food. Afternoon tea at the Ritz anyone! And when I went to Europe I tried all the local foods too. Snitzel in Austria, chips with mayo in Belgium, Bouillabaisse and pastries in France, pasta in Italy – shall I go on? Discovering the food of your adopted country is one of the best things about living abroad. And don’t go out to eat it all the time, why not take a local cooking class like I did.

 

5. Meet New People & Make Lifelong Friends

 

When I moved abroad I was hoping and expecting to meet lots of new people, but one of the things I least expected was to make lifelong friends. And one of those friends has become a life partner.

When you live abroad you will meet lots of different people. There will be work colleagues, house mates, travel partners and those you meet when totally not expecting it! Some will be short-term friends while others will become lifelong friends and partners. Some of the people that I met living abroad have become some of my closest friends. We don’t all live in the same city or country, but we keep in contact. Thank goodness for phones, email and social media making it easier to keep in touch.

 

6. Get Work Doing Something You’ve Never Done Before

 

If you aren’t being transferred overseas for work or moving from country to country as a digital nomad working remotely online, then you will most likely pick up work. Moving abroad can be one of the best ways to expand your opportunities that will look good on your CV.

When I moved abroad to live and work in the UK, I registered with a recruitment agency to do administration work. In no time I was being sent to different companies on a temporary basis. I mostly did PA (Personal Assistant) work, typing and data entry as I have a typing speed of around 80wpm. Then I thought I’d try something new and got a live-in job in a pub just outside of London where I worked for a summer. And then I took a live-in job as a nanny which took care of a job and a place to live all in the one hit! The skills I developed from doing these jobs has helped me to never be out of employment. This has definitely outweighed any cons of moving abroad for me.

7. Travel Opportunities

 

One of the best things of living abroad is the travel opportunities. Sure you may be studying or working but there will always be time to travel. When I worked in London, I had a weekend here, then a weekend there and then a few holidays here and there. I loved it being in a different city almost every weekend – discovering a new culture, meeting new people and enjoying the food!

 

8. Make Unforgettable Memories

 

Moving abroad leads to some of the best memories you’ll ever have. Even on a day to day basis while living in a foreign country you will make unforgettable memories. It is the little things that you often remember the most. How you conquered ordering food, navigated the tube in London in peak hour on your way to work or conquered customs of covering your head when entering mosques. There is something that you will remember from every day when living abroad in a foreign country.

 

9. Personal Growth

 

Personal growth is a huge pro of living abroad. Taking yourself out of your comfort zone and putting yourself in a new environment sees you grow as a person. You will constantly be facing challenges. Challenges you will confront and figure out and all these challenges can make you more independent and confident.

As a solo traveller who has moved abroad to live work and play somewhere in the world alone you only have yourself to rely on. When facing life abroad alone you have two choices. To grow as a person as you meet challenges or go home with your tail between your legs because it was ‘too hard’. Personal growth is good and will help you in the future. I credit moving abroad as being one of the best things I have ever done and the personal growth I acquired is still with me today.

 

10. Gain Skills for the Future

 

Moving abroad to live and work will help you to develop and gain skills for the future. You will try new things such as work, providing you with skills. You will meet new people helping you to develop social skills. These can help you in the future to navigate life.

 

11. Get New Travel Opportunities

Having grown up at a beach, I was use to spending all my time in coastal areas enjoying the water. It wasn’t until I moved abroad that I was introduced to other types of activities during my travels. As well as visiting many places by different types of transport I discovered many activities – hiking for one. Moving abroad to another country allows you to have many travel experiences.

 

12. Start Afresh

 

There’s something to be said for starting afresh by moving abroad. You may have had a relationship breakdown, been sacked from you job, having a mid-life crisis – whatever is happening in your life, you can ‘run away’ to start afresh in another country. I have found travel and discovering new cultures abroad is a great way to help get over the past and move on – very liberating!

 

13. Discover Your Passions

 

I wouldn’t have become a travel writer / blogger full time without living abroad. You may have read in the ‘about me’ section on my website that I fell into travel writing. It was after a visit to Gallipoli, Turkey for ANZAC Day that a magazine in London was calling for travel articles. So I wrote about my trip to Turkey, it was published, and I was paid 25 pounds. I was hooked and so began my passion for travel writing and now travel blogging.

Living abroad also ignited passions for spicy flavoured foods and history – yeah I’ve become a history freak and love visiting old buildings that have lots of stories to tell! And you can find your passions to.

 

14. Freedom

 

Last on my list of pros to moving abroad is freedom. Freedom from the shackles of home and the freedom to do what you want, when you want. And the freedom to be yourself without judgement.

 

Cons of Living Abroad

 

As with everything in life, and moving abroad is no exception, there are disadvantages.

 

1. Lots of Paperwork

 

Yep, before you can start your life abroad there is plenty of paperwork. You need a passport, visa/s, transport bought, accommodation booked and travel insurance and travel gear to purchase. All this can be time consuming and laborious. It could take months to get these things sorted! And there is a cost involved. It costs to get a passport, a visa and to buy transport and accommodation plus the travel gear you will take. This can add up and cost a lot.

And when you get there, there is more paperwork. You need to register your existence, open a bank account, apply for a tax number if you are going to work and find a place to live. The bureaucracy of moving abroad is one disadvantage. And each time you move to a new country, you will have to go through it again – talk about groundhog day!

 

2. Packing up Sucks

 

Packing up is definitely a con of moving abroad. The worst part I find is making the decisions as to what to take and what to leave behind. It is also extremely time consuming and can be expensive buying stuff to take with you.

 

3. Culture Shock

 

Culture shock can be a big issue when you move abroad. Nothing can prepare you for the actual experience where nothing is the same as what you are use to. Culture shock is definitely a major con of living abroad. Even moving to a country that speaks the same language as you do, things will be done differently. Culture shock is a learning curve that throws a curve ball at even the most experienced of expats.

 

4. Language Barriers

 

Different languages can be a challenge when you move abroad. It is particularly a challenge if you move to a country that doesn’t speak your native tongue. You can have trouble settling in because you don’t understand what is being said to you. Finding a place to live and getting a job may prove difficult. This is why it is good to know some of the language of the country you are moving abroad to.

 

5. Moving is Expensive

 

Moving anywhere can be expensive, but add moving abroad costs – passport, visa fees, transport costs, medical tests and short-term accommodation while you find a longer term place to live.

Choosing to move abroad isn’t always cheap which is why this is a big consideration for some and often seen as a con to moving abroad. But if you want a new lifestyle living overseas and plan to get a job or continue working online as a digital nomad this cost is just part of the moving abroad process. I have moved to a number of countries and have never looked at the costs involved as a negative. I see them as just part of moving abroad. On saying that, it is a decision you need to make.

 

6. Homesickness

One of the biggest cons of living abroad is dealing with homesickness and even the most hardy of traveller at some times, feels homesick. The biggest times I felt homesick was at Christmas time, when it was birthdays and when my first nephew was born. I felt really bad for not being home for these special occasions. But you cannot not live your dreams of moving and living abroad for one or two days of a year! And if it gets to you too much – just go home.

 

7. Loneliness

 

Loneliness seems to be a real fear of many people. And yes, it is lonely moving abroad by yourself – but you can be by yourself and not be lonely. There were times when I lived abroad I felt loneliness. Other travellers I had met moved on and I had to start meeting other people again. When I felt lonely, I didn’t sit at home thinking to myself ‘I am so lonely’, I took myself out and did things. I wondered through museums, went to the zoo, went on a walking tour, took a cooking lesson – so I worked on not being lonely.

 

8. Finding Work can be Hard

 

One of the hardest things about moving abroad is giving up the security of your job, unless you are taking your job with you. There is the worry you will not find work abroad. And yes, it can be hard finding work as the work you can do is often defined by the visa you are on. If it is a working holiday visa, you may only be allowed to do typical ‘backpacker jobs’. If you are being sponsored, the work permit will only cover the job you are being sponsored to do. While if moving abroad on a digital nomad visa, you will have to continue working online generating income. Hopefully, you will have enough savings to support yourself until you find work. This is why I like finding a ‘live in job’ like being a nanny, working in a British pub or working in a caravan park as you not only get a job, but accommodation too!

 

9. Tax Implications

 

On the topic of work, when you work in another country there can be tax implications. You will need to find out whether you have to pay tax in the country you are working. Also whether you have to advise the tax office in your home country if you are receiving money in a different country. All this can be a big challenge and definitely a con when you move abroad. I recommend getting a tax accountant who understands the tax implications for people who work abroad. But there are countries where you pay zero tax if living and working on a digital nomad visa.

 

10. Where Will You Live

 

Having nowhere to live when you arrive in a new country can be quite traumatic and definitely is a con of moving abroad. However, there are plenty of places to live from short-term accommodation in hostels and hotels to longer-term accommodation in AirB&Bs to house sitting. It can just take time to find something suitable to suit your needs and that is within your budget. You need to know what type of accommodation you want.

 

11. Adapting to new rules and a new life

 

Last on my list of pros and cons of moving abroad is the final disadvantage of adapting to new rules and a new life. Every country has rules and regulations you will need to adapt to. Expats are often unsure of what to expect from their new country, soo it is a good idea to read up on the country you are moving to beforehand so you don’t do too many faux pars. My best advice is to embrace your new life abroad, learn everything you can, speak to the locals, learn to laugh at your mistakes and be respectful while you learn the new rules in your new life abroad.

 

Should You Move Abroad?

 

In my opinion, yes, you should move abroad. I believe everyone should live and work abroad at least once in their lifetime. The advantages far outweigh the disadvantages of moving abroad. When I was growing up every Sunday night was Disney night. And on this night, after an early dinner, I was allowed a special chocolate to watch Disney on the TV. I’d wait impatiently for it to start to see what we would be seeing that night and when the Disney music began I was glued to the TV screen. 

I grew up watching some of the best Disney cartoons – Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and those pesky wabbits! And now Belle and Elsa! The show would always end with fireworks over the Disney castle, and oh how I dreamt to see it for real one day!

Finally, as a teenager, I made it to Disneyland for real with my family. As does any family on a visit to Los Angeles. Since that initial visit, I have visited Disney California a couple more times. Plus, I’ve been to other Disneyland’s around the world, notably Disneyland Tokyo and Disneyland Paris. I just love it every time, anywhere! 

Since my first visit to Disneyland Anaheim, Disneyland has grown. It is now called Disneyland Resort and is home now to two theme parks (Disneyland Park – the original Disneyland that I went to, and Disney California Adventure Park), three hotels and an entertainment district known as Downtown Disney with shops and restaurants. Wow! 

So how do you fit visiting 2 theme parks, eating and shopping into one day? Well, frankly, you need to be super organised with a Disneyland plan. Or you could increase your visit to a 2 day visit to Disneyland or longer.

If you only have one day to spend at Disneyland with or without kids, I would suggest you visit the original Disneyland Park as it has plenty of things to see and do to keep you occupied for a full day – but that is up to you! But people short of time often purchase a park hopper ticket that allows them to move between the two parks. More on that later in this post.

How Long Should You Spend at Disneyland

 

Many international tourists only have one day at Disneyland, and yes, you can see a lot, as long as you are very organised and plan your Disney visit in advance. But if 1 day at Disneyland Resort is all you have, then one day it is!

 

Where is Disneyland? And how to get there?

 

Disneyland is a 160-acre (75 ha) site found in Anaheim, California which is roughly 26 miles (41 km) from Los Angeles. You can get to Disneyland by car, bus or train however, I stayed at Disneyland Hotel so I could walk to the parks to maximise my time I had to spend at Disneyland. I did this because, not being a local, it was going to take almost 2 hours to get there by public transport and I didn’t want to get up really early with jet lag and all!

When is the Best Time to Visit Disneyland?

 

Anytime is a good time to visit Disneyland as it is open all year round. And it is often crowded every day. But it is especially crowded, with long waiting times for rides during the summer months, on weekends and during school holidays. I have been in May and November and it was crowded both times – and I didn’t have to wait too long to get on a ride.

You may want to take into account for your 1 day at Disneyland plans that Los Angeles is very hot during the summer months. Walking around Disneyland in the heat can be exhausting and can dampen your enthusiasm. But there are plenty of places you can go into to enjoy the air conditioning.

Prep Before Your Day in Disneyland

 

Before you even get to the park, you have your work cut out for. Probably not something you want to hear if you are on holiday in Los Angeles, but the more you prep, the better your first time at Disneyland day will be. Now you considered, the weather, where to stay and how to get there, now it’s time to know what things you can see and do in Disneyland so you can choose what to see and how you will spend your 1 day in Disneyland.

 

What is There to Do at Disneyland?

 

There are many things to do in Disneyland. There are amusement rides, shops, themed lands, restaurants and street food stalls. You will most likely want to choose the appropriate lands and rides.

If you visit the official Disneyland website, you can filter lists of the lands and rides to appropriate age level. This will help you decide what to see and do in Disneyland if you are visiting Disneyland with kids of different ages. Also, there are height restrictions on some rides, so you can check that out also. The filters also advise if the ride is long, short, slow, fast or loud.

So consider who you are visiting the park with. A day in Disneyland with kids can be a much different day with adults. Only you know whether you will need to slow down while someone has a sleep in their pram or not!

The ages of those you are visiting with can influence where you will go in the park and what rides you will go on – and there’s nothing wrong with that at all. So riding on Dumbo may not be a priority of your teens. And your young kids may not want to go on the big thrill rides like Indiana Jones and Space Mountain.

My biggest tip is to priorities your Disneyland day with things you want to see and do but also keep it flexible, as it is easy while walking around that something else will grab your attention.

Yeah, yeah, I’ve said it before, but you will have a better day if you know what you want to see rather than wondering around the parks!

Buying Tickets – Costs, Reservations and Extras

 

Gone are the days when you could rock up to the entrance, buy a ticket and you were in. Now you need park reservations and buy your ticket in advance.

Making your reservation and buying your ticket is very easy. Simply follow the procedure on the Disney website to make your reservation and buy your ticket/s. Click here 

1. Start on this page: select ticket to purchase or select make or modify ticket (if you already have a ticket).
2. Select Ticket, number of days, number of tickets and which park. You can visit one park only or choose park hopper.
3. Choose the day and select the park.
4. Add Genie and Parking.
5. Taken to your cart to check what you are purchasing, then purchase after creating an account.
6. Voila – you have a ticket.

 

To Genie, Genie+ or Not to Genie+

Genie service is the free in-app planner that helps you plan your Disneyland day.

Genie+ on the other hand is a paid reservation system for accessing shorter queues known as Lightning Lanes. So while in the Lightning Lane, if you pay for the service, you pay for shorter waits. If you are visiting Disneyland on the weekend, when it is busiest or there is a ride you are desperate to be on, paying to shorten you wait time can help you maximise your time, so you don’t miss out on seeing and doing everything you want to see and do in Disneyland. Particularly, when you only have a day to spend in Disneyland. Now you can only make a reservation when you enter the park. If you are on the fence about adding Genie+ to your ticket price, you can add it on the day you visit.

Download the Disneyland App. Once you have your ticket and all the extras you’ve opted for, add it, and everyone’s ticket you are travelling with to the Disneyland App. The app lets you scan your tickets, allows you to make Genie+ reservations, input your parking space, mobile order food and make dining reservations. You can also see the day’s schedule for shows and ride wait times.

If travelling in a group to Disneyland, it’s wise to let everyone in the group have their own ticket on their phone in the app. That way, if you get separated, everyone still has their own tickets. And they could have their own Genie+ if they want, or allocate one person to book all the Genie+ extras on the day.

Dining Reservations

 

The last thing to do is plan and order your dining.  As dining options can book up very quickly, reservations can be made 60 days in advance. So if you want to eat in Olga’s Cantina in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge or the Blue Bayou restaurant inside the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, I suggest you book these as soon as you can.

There are plenty of quick service spots in the park which don’t need a reservation, so there are plenty of dining options. You could have pizza at Alien Pizza in Tomorrowland. What about meat skewers and veggie kababs at the Bengal Barbecue to name a couple

If you don’t want to buy food at the park you can bring in your own snacks and food.  You will need to inform the security cast member that you have it when you arrive.

 

1 Day at Disneyland – The Big Day in Disneyland

 

Rope Dropping to Close

 

The big day to Disneyland has arrived. It is best to accomplish all you want to see and do in Disneyland by being there from open to close. Being at the park for opening is called rope dropping. The name came from that you can enter the park before park opening (usually 15 minutes before time) but only to a certain part of the park which is roped off. At the official park opening time, the rope ‘drops’ and you are then free to explore the entire park.

To get into Disneyland for rope drop, it is wise to be at the park some 45 minutes before the park opens. This is because you may need to park, go through security and make your way to the park entrance – this can take anywhere from 30-45 minutes. If you stay at Disneyland Resort – they let you in 30 minutes before rope drop, plus it is in walking distance.

And you can leave the park anytime however, try to stay until the park closes to get maximum fun from the park and get your money’s worth during your one day in Disneyland. However, check the closing time of some of the rides, as they close before the park. Mostly because if there are long queues for the ride, they try to get those onto the ride before the park closes.

• Have breakfast before you arrive to give it time to go down before you go on any rides.
• Arrive and go through entry procedures. Don’t forget, if driving, input your parking spot in the Disneyland app to help you remember where you parked.
• Once inside, appoint a reservation master and reserve your line jumping through Genie+
• During the morning go on a couple of rides and visit a couple of lands.
• Have lunch.
• More rides and lands.
• See the Grand Parade.
• Have dinner.
• See the fireworks.
• Lastly, at park close, catch the Disneyland Railroad to the exit and shop at Downtown Disney District as this area stays open later than the park.

 

What to Bring for Your Day in Disneyland

 

It would be nice to be hands and bag-free on your trip to Disneyland but there are things you will need to bring, particularly if you are visiting Disneyland Resort with kids. Kids seem to need more stuff when you go out.

• Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and hand sanitiser
• Reusable water bottle and snacks
• Sense of fun, excitement and a little pixie dust.

From historic architecture to spooky ghosts (it is one of the most haunted cities in America, after all), this three day guide to Savannah will help you design your perfect trip. How to Spend 3 Days in Savannah, Georgia

Day 1: Forsyth Park and Food Tour

Enjoy a southern delicacy – shrimp and grits

 

On the first day of your three day visit to Savannah, start off with a small breakfast at your accommodation or visit a cafe like Foxy Loxy Cafe or Goose Feathers Cafe & Bakery. Try not to eat too much though. You’ll want to be hungry for your food tour later!

When I visit a new city, I like to go on the tourist hop on hop off bus. It gives me an insight to the city, plus lets me work out which places I want to go and spend more time in. If I’m travelling with kids in Savannah it will give you an idea of what interests them too! And you’re in luck! Savannah has the Savannah Hop On Hop Off Trolley taking you to some of the best places in Savannah.

If you don’t go on the Savannah Hop On Hop Off Trolley….. start day one of this 3 day visit to Savannah at one of the most famous sites in Savannah: the fountain in Forsyth Park. Enjoy a leisurely walk from your accommodation to the park. The morning is the best time to visit the park as the weather should be temperate and it won’t have peak crowds yet.

At 30 acres large, there is a lot to see during your walk here. Street performers, art and architecture, to name a few. One of my favorite parts? All the dogs! Locals bring their dogs here for walks and to play with other pets.

If you’re a fan of the movie Forrest Gump, you can take a quick detour to Chippewa Square where the bus scene was filmed. Unfortunately, if you want to see the famous bench, you’ll have to go to the Savannah History Museum.

Late morning, kick on a food tour of Savannah. Visit a variety of different restaurants and local food boutiques, so you can quickly become an expert in all things Southern food. Meet your guide and embark on a culinary journey. Some of the foods and beverages you can expect to try include craft beers, honey products, Southern coastal cuisine, authentic mojitos, Southern biscuits and chicken, and British pies.

There’s no better way to work off all that delicious food than shopping down Broughton Street. Some of the shops you won’t want to miss are the Savannah Bee Company, Nourish, and The Paris Market and Brocante.

If you’re craving something sweet, stop by one of the top 10 ice cream parlors in the world: Leopold’s Ice Cream. With a mix of classic and unique flavors, there’s something for everyone here.

Plan to spend a few hours window shopping and enjoying the local shops in the area. For a break from the sun, check out Gutstein Gallery, one of the many galleries owned and restored by the Savannah College of Art and Design. In the past, it has featured artists like Yoko Ono, Chuck Close, Richard Mosse and Gregory Crewdson.

Dinner at the Olde Pink House is only a quick walk away. The Olde Pink House is known for its Southern cuisine served inside a Colonial mansion. This is one of the most famous restaurants in Savannah, so you’ll want to make a reservation as early in advance as possible.

To close out the evening, visit a cocktail bar before heading back to your hotel. One of the best spots for a drink is the Alley Cat Lounge. You have to walk through an alley to get there, but that really adds to the speakeasy vibe here.

 

Day 2: Riverfront and Ghost Tour

Enjoy the Savannah Riverfront

 

This morning, kick off your day by eating brunch and collecting rubber ducks at Little Duck Diner. Yes, you can get drinks here with rubber ducks in them! Not to mention, the food at the diner is delicious.

After you’ve had your fill, head over to River Street. It’s a lovely walk with plenty of shops to stop by along the way. You’ll definitely want to check out River Street Market Place and Savannah Candy Kitchen.

The Tiniest Bookshop can also be found on River Street. True to its name, this bookshop is just 150 square feet! Can you believe it started as a bus?

If you enjoy boat rides, you’ll definitely want to arrange a riverfront cruise. This is a good way to learn about the history of Savannah while seeing the city from another angle. Savannah Riverboat Cruises has two boats, so you can choose the best cruise for you.

For more nature-forward scenery, walk over to Johnson Square. The trees here are gorgeous! If you purchased a book at The Tiniest Bookshop, this would be a great place to pause and read.

After all that walking, you’ll probably be ready for a pick-me-up. Some of the best coffee shops and cafes in Savannah include The Coffee Fox and Bitty & Beau’s Coffee.

By the way, Savannah is an open container city. If you drink alcohol, you could walk into a bar and ask for a drink to-go! You’ll probably see a lot of bachelorette parties in Savannah enjoying a few drinks.

One of the must-do’s in Savannah is a ghost tour. Since you’re visiting one of the most haunted cities in America, it’s a right of passage in the city to see if you can find some (hopefully friendly) ghosts. Soon after your pick-me-up of choice, embark on a ghost tour. There are a couple of different types of ghost tours in Savannah catered to the type of adventure you want. If you’re looking for something more laidback, companies will take you to the most haunted spots in the city on a trolley. If you’re looking for something more hands on, like a paranormal investigation, there are tours for that too.

After your encounters with the beyond, close out your evening at one of the Riverfront’s many rooftop bars. The Electric Moon Skytop Lounge + The Moon Deck has table service overlooking the river. You can wave to tourists and locals going by on boats from here while enjoying a few beverages and small plates.

 

Day 3: Discover more of Savannah

Lots of buildings with southern charm and character

 

On your final day in Savannah, you’ll spend your morning in the city followed by a day trip to explore the outskirts of Savannah.

Once again, you’ll be partaking in the best type of meal – brunch. Collin’s Quarter is one of the most popular brunch spots in Savannah. But no need to fear, they’re good at getting a lot of people seated in a timely manner. Don’t miss their unique coffees and teas.

Next, you’ll be learning about the history in Savannah. Your first stop is the Colonial Park Cemetery, located in the heart of the Historic District. This cemetery is the oldest in Savannah, dating back to 1750. It’s known for being the final resting place for 700 people who died during the yellow fever epidemic of 1820.

While dark, it’s still important to explore the more difficult parts of history. At the Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters, you can take a tour to learn about the families who lived there and the enslaved people forced to work there.

Another piece of Savannah’s history is that the first Girl Scout’s of America headquarters is located here. If you were a Girl Scout, or know someone who was, you may want to visit Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace to learn about the creator of the Girl Scout’s.

After you’ve learned about the history of Savannah, it’s time for a change of pace. Located about 25 minutes away from downtown Savannah is Tybee Island, where you’ll spend the afternoon. Although it’s called an island, you can drive (or taxi) straight there. At Tybee Island, you can try to spot some wild dolphins on a tour or just spend a few hours soaking in the sand and sun. It’s a great place to relax after all the walking you’ve been doing and get your tan on.

As Savannah is a relatively small city, it’s easy to get around on foot. To make best use of your time, it’s recommended to block your days based on where you’re walking. So get your walking shoes on that you’ve packed for this weekend getaway! If you tire of walking or you’re travelling Savannah with little kids that tire quickly, Savannah’s bus system is called CAT. There are 15 different bus routes to get you around. There is also DOT, the free shuttle services that takes residents and visitors around Savannah’s historic district. It runs every 10 minutes.

 

Best time to travel to Savannah

 

You can visit Savannah anytime, though the weather of the different seasons may influence when you visit.

Spring – March, April, May – is said to be the best time to visit Savannah as the weather is warm and pleasant and the azaleas are flowering. There are also plenty of festivals to enjoy.

Summer – June, July, August – is hot and humidity can be sky high making it unpleasant walking around, particularly if visiting Savannah with kids.

Fall – September, October, November –  is when the weather begins to cool and tourism tends to be lower making Savannah better for walking around. And enjoying some of the festivals such as the Savannah Jazz Fest.

Winter in Savannah – December, January, February – is a great time to visit Savannah as it is pleasant walking around the city, plus you get the amazing Christmas atmosphere.

• Freelance. As a freelancer you can work from home or wherever you are. Very similar to working fully remote, but you will be freelancing your services.

Being a blogger and blogging about your passion is one of the best remote worker jobs around – well, that’s my opinion. As an introverted traveler this is one of the remote jobs I do. I blog about travel and the lifestyle travel affords me. Do you have a passion? Then why not start a blog and get blogging. 

Bloggers can make a full-time income from their blog through ads on their site, affiliate marketing of products and selling digital products and courses they create. And what is a full-time income? Well this will vary per blogger, but in my case I make a few thousand per month and this affords me the remote work lifestyle I like.

 

2. Freelance Writer

 

Being a freelance writer is one of the ultimate introvert careers. If you love writing, then as a freelance writer you can be writing for other people. Freelancing offers a lot of flexibility and allows introverts to work from anywhere – from home, from a van or while travelling and living abroad on a digital nomad visa.

Some freelance writing jobs you could get as a freelancer include:

• Blog writer
• Content writer
• Technical writer
• Ghostwriter
• Resume writer

To get started as a freelance writer I suggest putting your profile up on Fiverr. This is how I got started writing freelance travel articles. Then I joined a few writing Facebook Groups and have clients through them. 

 

3. Proofreading and Editing

 

Many introverts I have met love to read. So why not put your reading skills to good use. If you aren’t aware of the difference of proofreading and editing I will quickly give you the definition of both. Proofreading involves looking at text closely, line by line, word by word to spot any spelling and grammatical mistakes. While Editing refers to making more local changes to things like sentence structure and phrasing to make sure your meaning is conveyed clearly and concisely. So you could decide to be a proofreader or an editor, or both. To do this sort of work I suggest you have some sort of qualification in the field. I actually have a Diploma of Proofreading and Editing from the Australian College of Journalism. I did it to help improve my writing. So as well as being a freelance traveler writer / blogger, I also do proofreading. I got my first client through a Facebook Group and she recommended me to other travel bloggers who needed proofreading help. This goes to show, if you do a good job, people often recommend you.

To start as a proofreader and editor when you are an introvert I suggest you do a course first, then offer your services in Facebook Groups and upload a profile onto sites such as Fiverr.

 

4. Virtual Assistant (VA)

 

Being a virtual assistant is such a great online job for introverts. It allows you to use your skills to work from anywhere and be paid for it. Virtual assistants help other people and businesses with their overflow of work. Many VAs specialise in a number of areas and offer services in one or more fields. Many VAs specialise so they are great in one or two fields rather than mediocre in a lot of fields. Services virtual assistant’s offer are right up any introverts alley as these jobs require minimal contact with people and can be done from home – wherever home is! Services include:

Graphic design careers are great jobs for introverts as they allow for creativity in the solitude of your own home workplace. No doubt, you will have done a course in graphic design providing you with the fundamentals of great design. With this knowledge, you could be:

• In print design creating book covers and internal pages

Many graphic designers work in-house or freelance from home which suits introverts down to a tea! As with other jobs able to be done online, find clients by setting up a profile on Fiverr and join Facebook groups.

 

6. Data Entry

 

Data entry is an ideal remote job for introverts as it allows them to work with data and spreadsheets. Even if this is done in an office, you will be working independently and concentrating on what you are doing. But this type of work can easily be done remotely from home or anywhere. I have done this type of work and what often counts the most is your typing speed. The faster the better, as long as you are accurate. Plus having knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word and Google Sheets will come in handy. Many data entry introverts find jobs via Fiverr, Upwork and FlexJobs. Linkedin also may be useful.

 

7. Bookkeeper

 

Behind every good accountant is usually a great bookkeeper! To be a bookkeeper you will have done a course to learn the fundamentals of accounting plus have knowledge of the latest accounting software packages such as MYOB. You will be responsible for reconciling bank accounts, recording financial transactions, tracking expenses and handling accounts payable and receivable. And all the information you input will then be organised and calculated to produce reports. If you have this knowledge, then being a remote online bookkeeper may be the job for your introverted soul. Many bookkeepers find work through LinkedIn, Fiverr, Upwork and large recruitment sites such as Indeed and Seek.

 

8. Social Media Manager

 

You might think a social media manager needs to be an extrovert but really, the social media manager is the person behind the extrovert! As a social media expert you will be responsible for creating content for your client’s social media platforms. And there are a lot of social media platforms out there including YouTube, Pinterest, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, Facebook to name a few. Most social media managers choose one or two platforms to specialise in rather than being mediocre in many. You can find work through Fiverr, Upwork and many Facebook groups.

 

9. Drop shipper

 

What’s a drop shipper I hear you ask? Well it is someone who has an ecommerce store that sells goods from a third party. Meaning, you don’t keep stock on hand. So for instance, you are selling bags on your website, someone buys the bag and an order is placed with you, you then order the bag from your supplier and then the supplier fulfils the order. Read my post on Being a Drop shipper. It is a great sort of job for introverts as there is no face-to-face selling as all correspondence is done online. To start drop shipping you will need to have a platform to sell your products – this could be on Facebook or your own website.

 

10. Technical Support

 

A remote IT support job is well-suited for introverts who enjoy solving technical problems without in-person interactions. Programming typically involves working independently, focusing on complex problem-solving tasks, and spending long periods of time in front of a computer. When not so technical people have issues with their tech, they turn to a technical support person. When I have technical issues with my website I turn to a specialist website tech person who resolves my issues.

When I first moved abroad to live in London on a working holiday I was totally reliant on a landline or public phone booth to keep in contact with family and friends and to get work from my agency. Today, wifi and data are my lifeline for my travelling lifestyle. I use them for everything – paying for stuff, booking accommodation, keeping in touch with family and friends and sharing on social media.
