If New Zealand is on your radar to work remotely while visiting – well you are in luck. New Zealand doesn’t have an official digital nomad visa but it has recently changed its visitor visa to allow people to work online while visiting. Great news for digital nomads and remote workers working for non-New Zealand companies.

The changes announced from January 27 2025 make the allowance of remote work for those who apply for a visitor entry visa. But you must originate from certain countries. Those being the UK, USA, EU member countries, Japan, South Korea, Argentina or Israel. And the validity of the updated visitor visa will be either six months for a multiple-entry visa or nine months for a single-entry visa. Great news for those wanting to live and work online in New Zealand while travelling.

While not an official digital nomad visa, like other countries have introduced, it is a step in the right direction. For those who want to explore New Zealand and continue to work online remotely for their overseas organisation it is great news. And, the best part, you will not breach any visa conditions being on a tourist visa and working online. Though there are some restrictions:

Visitor visa holders must not:

Work for a New Zealand employer.

Provide goods or services to people or business in New Zealand.

Do work that requires them to be physically present at a workplace in New Zealand.

It should be noted that you should be aware of tax implications. In general, New Zealand will exempt you from tax if you do not spend more than 92 days in New Zealand in a 12-month period. However, you may be liable to pay tax if you are a resident of some of the 40 plus countries which New Zealand has a tax treaty with if you stay in New Zealand beyond the 92 days.

Get more details on this visa and tax implication at New Zealand Immigration.

New Zealand and Australia have a unique arrangement known as the “Trans-Tasman Travel Arrangement”. This allows citizens from either country to freely live and work in the other without needing a visa beforehand. So, essentially enabling them to move between the two countries with ease to reside and work as they please. Good news for Australian digital nomads and remote workers who want to come and spend time in New Zealand.

The Waitangi Treaty Grounds are New Zealand’s most important historical site. It was here that the Waitangi Treaty was first signed on 6 February 1840. This treaty was the founding document of the New Zealand nation, a collaborative venture between the British and the Maori. And the grounds themselves seem to symbolise this partnership, bringing together these two very different cultures. If you are visiting New Zealand whether for a 7 day visit of the North Island, or a 1 month New Zealand itinerary, definitely include a visit to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds in your itinerary.

In this guest post, Karen Warren, a freelance writer, book reviewer and novelist takes us on a journey to discover the Waiting Treaty Grounds in New Zealand. Even though I have visited the grounds, my memory of it is hazy as I was young at the time. And during my second visit to New Zealand I went other places. So I am glad Karen could write this post for me.

And now, discover the history of the Waitangi Treaty and why a visit to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds should be taken when visiting New Zealand.

Why Are The Waitangi Treaty Grounds Important?

The Waitangi Treaty was signed at several different places throughout New Zealand. However James Busby, the British government’s representative in New Zealand, lived at Waitangi, and it was here that the terms of the Treaty were negotiated. The final document was the result of five years’ discussion between Busby and Maori tribal leaders. In 1840 William Hobson landed on Waitangi Beach to sign the treaty on behalf of Queen Victoria. Today a tall flagpole marks the spot where the Treaty was first signed.

What is the Waitangi Treaty?

The Treaty officially recognised British settlement. It also confirmed the authority of the Maori chiefs, formalising their right to land and resources. For the first time New Zealand was brought together as a country with a common government.

It may seem surprising that the Maori chiefs were willing to sign the Treaty. In fact there were a number of chiefs who refused to do so, but the majority (about 500) agreed to co‑operate. There were a number of reasons for this. For one thing, the country was full of traders and other settlers who were not subject to any regulation. New Zealand was a lawless place at that time, and land disputes were common. The Treaty was seen as a way of subjecting unruly Britons (and others) to British law. It was also hoped that it would bring peace to the Maori themselves, who had always suffered a certain amount of inter-tribal conflict. More pragmatically, change was probably seen as inevitable. It was better to negotiate the terms of government than to have them imposed.

A Partnership Between The Maori And The British

As you walk around the Treaty Grounds you will see a symbolic harmony between British and Maori elements. The grounds themselves are laid out in the European style, with formal lawns and gardens. But you enter the site along a boardwalk passing a whole range of native plants and trees. And James Busby’s colonial house stands opposite the Maori Meeting Hall. Interestingly, James Busby made a point of filling his garden with a mixture of native and European species.

Although Waitangi was the home of the British Residency, it also has long associations with the Maori people. In particular, the beach was once known as Te Ana o Maikuku (Maikuku’s Cave). The legend is that a chief’s daughter once lived in a cave on this beach, and that her son, Te Ra, became an important ancestor of the local people. In recognition of the continuing importance of Waitangi to the Maori a ceremonial canoe was built in 1940 to commemorate the Treaty’s centenary. The canoe is launched every year on 6 February, Waitangi Day.

Celebrate Waitangi Day

There are still those who feel, like the original dissenting Maori chiefs, that the Treaty was misguided, and that it has not always been implemented in the way it was intended. However, for many New Zealanders, at home and abroad, Waitangi Day, the day the treaty was signed is an important national festival. And as always, there will be celebrations at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds on Waitangi Day plus in other locations in New Zealand and around the world.

Best Things to See and Do in Auckland

Head to the SkyTower for panoramic views of Auckland, walk around the edge or even jump off – New Zealand is about adventure after all!

Stroll around Viaduct Basin in Auckland Harbour and pop into a cafe, bar or restaurant.
Hop on public transit to explore Mt. Eden for an easy 2km walk to a stunning view of the city. Mt. Eden is actually a sacred crater that you can see once you reach the top. Just be careful not to fall in!

Visit One Tree Hill (officially known as Maungakiekie / One Tree Hill). It is a 182-metre volcanic peak and public park situated within the suburb of One Tree Hill.

If you’re after a beach day, Mission Bay Beach is one of the closest beaches to the city and it won’t disappoint.

Opt to spend the day at Waiheke Island which you can get to by ferry. There are numerous beaches along the island with fun water activities to partake in.

Enjoy one of the many parks – Auckland Botanic Gardens, Eden Gardens and Parnell Rose Gardens.

Want to see native flora and fauna a visit to Auckland Zoo might be on your cards. Particularly Te Who Nui – the Living Realm at Auckland Zoo showcasing native animals, including the Kiwi.

One of the best ways to discover Auckland is to purchase a ticket on the Auckland Hop-on Hop-off Explorer bus. I know, I know, they are touristy. But I love them. Every new city I visit that has a hop-on hop-off bus I go on. This is because they take me to all the best places. I usually do a complete circuit first to help me to decide where I would like to re-visit and spend time.

Walk to the Lighthouse and see where the Pacific Ocean Meets the Tasman Sea

Distance Bay of Islands to Cape Reinga: 197km, 2.5 hours drive

Today, drive the 2.5 hour drive up the coast to Cape Reinga. Cape Reinga is an iconic spot in New Zealand and is famed for being the northernmost point of the country, though technically it isn’t. There is a lot of Maori cultural significance to Cape Reinga. This is the place where spirits come to descend into the underworld, leaving behind Aotearoa for Hawaiki-A-Nui, the land of their ancestors. The spirits slide down the roots of an ancient pohutakawa tree which you can see on the headland’s edge.

Best way to spend your time at Cape Reinga

Walk to the lighthouse marking the tip of Cape Reinga and possibly see Manawatāwhi (Three Kings Islands). Cape Reinga is also where the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean join and sometimes you can see the two different coloured oceans merging. Waves merge into each other and in Maori mythology, this is the joining of Te Moana-a-Rehua (the sea of Rehua) with Te Tai-o-Whitirea (the sea of Whitirea) representing the joining of male and female or the essence of life. Unfortunately, the day I was there, it was bitterly cold grey cloudy day with strong winds blowing off the ocean, so I didn’t get to see this and appreciate what I was actually seeing.

Because of the remoteness of this area there is no public transport coming here so lucky you have your rented care, or you could take an organised day trip. There is limited camping in Cape Reinga but if you decide to stay you may be treated to a spectacular sunset and sunrise. I suggest you book an extra night in Waitangi and return there for the night if you don’t want to camp.

If you like hiking, Cape Reinga is in the middle of the Te Pack Coastal Track. However, it can take 4 days to hike the track so if you want to complete it, you will need to budget to do this. I haven’t during the 1 month New Zealand itinerary.

TIP: Cape Reinga is sacred ground and is considered tape (taboo) to eat or drink in the area. There are picnic spots you will need to find so you can eat and drink. If you were hoping to buy something to eat, the nearest shop is about 45km away.

On you way back to Waitangi from Cape Reinga there are a number of places to call into. The Te Pack Sand Dunes are quite spectacular and you can hire boards to go dune boarding. There is also 90 Mile Beach which is a beautiful long stretch of beach.

As Cape Reinga is the furthest point you can go to in New Zealand you will need to turn back.
Distance to Taupo: 1-hour drive

There’s a lot to do in Taupo so you should account for a few days here! Just before you reach the city, you’ll pass by Huka Falls. Make sure to stop there for a few photos and take in the bright blue water rushing by. Spend your first day walking along New Zealand’s largest lake – Lake Taupo, or perhaps you’ll want to take a boat ride along the lake for sunset. You’ll be able to see beautiful rock carvings done by the Maori people many years ago. Extend your stay in Taupo to give skydiving a chance! Don’t worry if you’re not up for the adrenaline rush because you can spend the day at one of many natural or man-made hot springs! There are options that work with any budget and you can even find free natural hot springs a few minute drive from the city.

To get from the North to South Island you can fly, but we are taking the ferry because we have the car. Plus, the crossing is quit scenic. There is lots to see as you sail through Wellington Harbour, across Cook Strait and sail through Marlborough Sounds, Queen Charlotte Sound and into Picton. The Marlborough Sounds are particularly magnificent which are an extensive network of sea-drowned valleys. Either side you will see steep forested hills and quiet little bays, its quite incredible - just wait till you see it during this New Zealand road trip.

The crossing from North Island to South Island is 92km across the Cook Straight and will take about 3-3.5 hours, depending on the weather.
Once off the boat, this part of your New Zealand road trip itinerary is all about New Zealand's South Island. You could spend some time in Picton, maybe enjoying one of the resorts or take a walk. Then drive to Christchurch, about a 5 hour drive and check into your accommodation for the next 3 nights.

The drive to Christchurch is quite scenic as you are driving through Marlborough Country, famous for its wine and food – fancy a local Sauvignon Blanc? I do, particularly over a walk around Picton - but that’s just me! You could make stops along the way at Blenheim or Kaikoura or any of the other towns along the way.
Organise Your New Zealand Holiday - Pre-Planning New Zealand Tips

New Zealand is a country easily explorable in a month. Let’s get started with some pre-trip planning, and then look at a detailed one month New Zealand itinerary by road.

Best Way to Travel Around New Zealand

Travelling New Zealand by Car or Camper Van

Of course you can travel New Zealand by train, bus or on a tour, but for this itinerary around New Zealand, I’m recommending that you have your own transport. The best way to travel in New Zealand is by car or camper van. A vehicle will allow you more freedom to move at your own pace and go where you want, when you want! Your trip will be more flexible as you can deviate during this 1 month New Zealand itinerary if you want to. As you make your way through this New Zealand itinerary, you’ll see that there’s a lot of driving in order to get from place to place. If you don’t have a car and need to rent one you can rent one through DiscoverCars. If wanting a camper van check out great options at MotorhomeRepublic.com.

Accommodation in New Zealand

There is no shortage of accommodation in New Zealand, from backpacker hostels, campsites to 5 star splurge establishments. When deciding where to stay in New Zealand for a month take a look at the booking.com listings for New Zealand to get great deals on accommodation. I have mentioned accommodation suggestions under each place we stay on this New Zealand one month itinerary and you can check pricing and availability of them for each stop.

Phone, camera, power adaptor plug and power bank.
Toiletries.
Luggage. As you will be moving around every few days on this itinerary of Italy, ensure your luggage is easy to carry.

How Much Money to Take to New Zealand for a 1 month holiday?

To work out how much it will cost to visit New Zealand for a month I suggest you create a budget. List it out as follows:

Airfare or transport to New Zealand _____
Transport to travel around New Zealand _____
Accommodation 28 nights @ _____
Food _____ is this included? Is breakfast included in accommodation stay?
Extras _____ ie. entrance fees to museums and other sites, bungy jump, helicopter rides, etc.
Travel Insurance ______

TIP: Purchase as much as possible before you arrive then you don’t have to worry about taking extra money.

And how will you take your money on your New Zealand holiday? Take cash, credit and debit cards to give you the flexibility to pay for things.

Is One Month in New Zealand enough?

Spending one month in New Zealand is long enough to visit both islands. But the longer you have, the more you will be able to see and do. One way to extend your time in New Zealand is to apply for the New Zealand Working Holiday Visa. If you are successful in getting one, you can stay up to 1-2 years living and working in New Zealand. New Zealand also has the New Zealand Digital Nomad Visa allowing a stay of up to 6 months. So how long to visit New Zealand? How long have you got? One month is a great beginning.

Don't Forget Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is highly recommended for your trip to New Zealand. As New Zealand is the 'adventure capital' of the world, you may find yourself experiencing some extreme outdoor adventures. Ensure you are covered appropriately. Get a quote for travel insurance from WorldNomads or SafetyWing.

Are You Ready for a Month in New Zealand?

Of course, there’s so much more to discover in New Zealand but this 1 month itinerary will allow you to experience as much as possible in a short amount of time. If you happen to have more time to explore the North Island of New Zealand, you should do it! Both islands are unique and incredibly beautiful so it’s worth checking out if you can. Regardless, you’ll have a spectacular time venturing through New Zealand during this 1 month itinerary!

New Zealand is a compact country with plenty to see and do. When planning any trip to New Zealand, you will want to know the best way to get around. There are a number of travel options for travelling New Zealand so you can fully appreciate all it has to offer. Many hire a car or camper van while others travel on the extensive bus and train networks. If you are planning a holiday to New Zealand here are the top travel options for travelling New Zealand.

New Zealand Travel Options

Whether visiting New Zealand on a 7 day North Island holiday, a 1 month New Zealand itinerary or moving to New Zealand on a working holiday visa or a New Zealand digital nomad visa, you will want to know how to get around. So here are the best NZ travel options.

1. Travelling New Zealand by Car or Camper Van

One of the best ways to travel New Zealand is by car or camper van. A vehicle will allow you the freedom to move at your own pace and go where you want, when you want! Your trip will be more flexible as you can deviate if you want to. A car is great to hire to get you around New Zealand however, the accommodation costs on top of the hiring fee may prove expensive – but this depends on the type of accommodation you will stay in. An option is to hire a camper van. A camper van means you will be taking your accommodation with you as you roam from place to place. If you don’t have a car and need to rent one you can check out prices and availability through DiscoverCars. If wanting a camper van check out great options at MotorhomeRepublic.com.

Tips for Driving in New Zealand

Here are some tips for driving in New Zealand.

Drive on the left side of the road in New Zealand

Know the Speed Limits. Speed limit signs are on the side of the road. They mostly have a red ring around a number. Speed is measured in km per hour in New Zealand. The national speed limit for open roads is 100 km per hour.

Only overtake when it is safe to do so.

Stay off your phone while driving.

Don’t drink and drive. It is illegal to drive with alcohol in your system if you are under 20 years old. Over 20 years old and it is 250 micrograms per litre of breath.

Watch out for animals on the road. Slow down.

Watch out for one way signs on bridges. Most of New Zealand’s bridges are single lane. Look at the sign first. The bigger arrow means that that side of the road gets priority so you will need to give way if you don’t have that arrow.

Understand how to drive in different conditions, particularly if driving in winter. Head advice regarding putting chains on your tyres.

Take your time and enjoy the scenery.

2. Travelling New Zealand by Train

Taking the train in New Zealand is another transport options you could choose to travel around New Zealand. However, it isn’t as flexible as having your own car or camper van. New Zealand does has some of the most scenic train rides in New Zealand.

The TranzAlpine runs between Christchurch, Arthur’s Pass and Greymouth on New Zealand’s South Island and takes you through the scenic Southern Alps. If in a hurry, you could take the Northern Explorer that links Auckland and Wellington. I undertook this train trip. It is a 12-hour journey taking you through the volcanic heart of the North Island. A highlight of the trip is the famous Raurimu Spiral. Yes, just like the name sounds, it is a spiral – a feat of railway engineering. I could feel the train spiralling slowly as the train did this part of the track.

And don’t forget the Coastal Pacific. This takes you between Picton and Christchurch where you will have the steep Kaikoura Ranges on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other.

3. Travelling New Zealand by Bus

New Zealand has a number of options to travel by bus. You could get yourself a bus pass, take a hop-on hop-off bus tour or take an escorted bus tour.

InterCity Buses

The only national coach service in New Zealand is InterCity. They offer bus tickets to get you from A to B in New Zealand and service many towns and cities in New Zealand. As well as cheap A to B tickets you can get bus passes to use on the bus network. Check out Intercity Buses here.

Hop-on hop-off New Zealand Bus Tours

A Hop-on hop-off bus allows you to travel by bus from certain points within certain cities and the country and usually secures your hostel accommodation for the night. These are great options if you are travelling New Zealand solo as you get the chance to meet many other solo travellers. Check out KiwiExperience, StrayTravel and Flying Kiwi for hop-on hop-off bus tours around New Zealand. If looking for an option to see Auckland, check out details of the Auckland Hop-on Hop-off Explorer Bus here.

Take an escorted bus tour of New Zealand

If you want all the logistics sorted out for you – transport, accommodation, most meals – then consider taking an escorted bus tour of New Zealand. Some great tour companies include Haka Tours, Intrepid Travel, Kiwi Experience, G Adventures, AAT Kings, Globus and Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours.

4. Travelling New Zealand by Plane

New Zealand has plenty of airports servicing many cities so if you prefer to fly, then why not. However, flying is great to get you from A to B but you do miss out on a lot. The major airline in New Zealand is Air New Zealand. Check out their website for flight details and costs.

5. Travelling New Zealand by Ferry

You can’t actually travel New Zealand by ferry, but you can travel between the North and South Islands by ferry. The ferry sails between Wellington on the North Island and Picton on the South Island. During the 3.5 hour journey you will be treated to some glorious scenery, particularly as you pass through the Marlborough Sound.

You can purchase your InterIslander ticket here.

6. Hitchhiking New Zealand

Yes, hitchhiking is legal in New Zealand and is pretty common practice also. However, if you are on a time limit with your itinerary around New Zealand it may be a slow process. You will need to factor extra time into your travels. Just be safe and cautious about who you accept a lift from.

7. Hiking in New Zealand

You may not have thought that hiking is a form of transport, but you can look at it that way. After all, walking is a form of transport. And walking can take you many places in New Zealand, and it is free! So don’t forget that hiking can be included into your travels around New Zealand. In fact, you could hike the Te Araroa Trail. This trail is 3,000km or 1,864 miles long and takes you from the top of the North Island at Cape Reinga, follows the centre of New Zealand all the way to Bluff on the South Island. They say it takes around 120 days to complete the trail. If you have the time, and love hiking, this may be a way for you to travel in New Zealand.

To get from the North to South Island you can either fly or take a ferry. You can fly into Christchurch where you can rent a car. If you have been travelling around the North Island you can take the InterIslander Ferry from Wellington to Picton and take your car with you. The crossing from North Island to South Island is 92km across the Cook strait which makes it approximately 3-3.5 hours long. This journey is quite scenic, particularly the final stretch where you sail through the magnificent Marlborough Sounds.

The Marlborough Sounds are an extensive network of sea-drowned valleys. Enjoy steep forested hills and quiet bays as you cruise through to port in Picton. Once you make to land on the other side of New Zealand, you should head towards Christchurch. Christchurch is a vibrant city with lots to see and do!

It is then about a 5 hour drive from Picton to Christchurch making the day a long travelling day. However, you are driving through Marlborough Country, famous for its wine and food. Fancy a local Sauvignon Blanc?. Possibly enjoy a few samples during your journey down the coast. Maybe stopping along the way at Blenheim or Kaikoura or any of the other towns along the way. Kaikoura is particularly beautiful. It is a coastal town and known for abundant wildlife including whales. Take the Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway that winds through the town to lookout points. If time, go on a whale watching tour to see the might Sperm whales. Then onto Christchurch.

If you hope to jump into the lake, beware of the freezing cold water, even in the summer months! If you’re an adrenalin junkie, or even not, there are plenty of activities to partake in. Why not bungee jump or skydive while in Queenstown.

Queenstown is also known for its nightlife so you should certainly check out some of the bars in the city before you take off to Wanaka the next day.

Queenstown is in the heart of New Zealand’s Southern Alps and is a great base if you want to ski in New Zealand. The four ski resorts, Cardrona Alpine Resort, Coronet Peak, The Remarkables and Treble Cone offer great snow and a variety of terrain that suits beginners to expert skiers. There is plenty of are ski as well in the bars and restaurants.

Day 11 – Queenstown to Wanaka

Don’t get too upset about leaving Queenstown because Wanaka is just as beautiful and only about an hour drive away! Wanaka is the gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park and If you’re up for a hike, you must do Roy’s Peak while you’re in Wanaka. Start the hike in the afternoon to get to the peak by sunset. Just remember to bring a flashlight for your walk down the track on the way back.

You could also spend a chilled day in Wanaka, walking to the famous lone tree of Lake Wanaka, (a famous tree that’s grown out of Lake Wanaka near the shore). There are also boat cruises and bike tours if you’re looking for a different activity!

A trip to the Franz Josef Glacier just might be the highlight of your trip to New Zealand! It will take close to 4 hours to get there driving from Wanaka but it’s worth it. Leave early so you have enough time to do the heli hike where you get to explore the glacier with a guide, crawling through ice tunnels and caves and take in the breathtaking views! Time permitting, the Fox Glacier might be on your list to visit. Maybe end your day at the Glacier Hot Pools Experience. Enjoy the pools fed by rainwater and surrounding natural waters to revive your body after a hard day sightseeing!

The heli hikes are only available when weather permits so keep an eye out beforehand to ensure you’re able to get a spot. If the weather isn’t great there are a few hikes in the area that will lead you close to the glacier. Or perhaps you would want to take a scenic flight over Mount Cook, New Zealand’s highest peak. A flight would be better, as it would be a long drive and unfortunately, not enough time on this 14 day New Zealand South Island Itinerary. Maybe on a 1 month New Zealand itinerary.

Day 13 – Franz Josef Glacier to Greymouth

Greymouth is your final stop on the South Island. It will take about 2.5 hours driving from Franz Josef to get there and is full of history. What was once a mining town on the West Coast of the South Island is now a unique destination where you can visit the Shantytown Museum and taste a few of Monteith’s finest beers!

If you’re interested in learning more about Greymouth’s history take on Point Elizabeth Walk (2 hours) that passes through old mining sites, a beach and a scenic reserve.

Day 14 – Greymouth to Picton

All good things must come to an end! Drive about 4.5 hours from Greymouth to Picton to catch a ferry back to the North Island. You could also drive about 3 hours instead to Christchurch to catch a flight out of the country if you’re continuing your travels or heading back home!

Of course, there’s so much more to discover in New Zealand but this South Island itinerary will allow you to experience as much as possible in a short amount of time. If you happen to have more time to explore the North Island of New Zealand, you should do it! Both islands are unique and incredibly beautiful so it’s worth checking out if you can. Regardless, you’ll have a spectacular time venturing through this South Island itinerary!

Has New Zealand been calling your name? If you love adventure, hiking, beaches and adrenaline activities, there’s no better place to visit. Those familiar with the country will know that it’s split between two islands – North Island and South Island. While both are spectacular, South Island often gets most of the attention and North Island is sometimes left as an afterthought. This 7 day North Island itinerary will walk you through the best spots to check out and show you just how unique and beautiful this part of New Zealand is!

Getting Around New Zealand

Since New Zealand is a fairly small country with a small population, there aren’t many transit options. With that being said, it’s quite easy to get around and the locals will help you find your way if you happen to get lost.

Travelling North Island by Campervan/Car

Hiring a car or a campervan is a wonderful way to experience the North Island on your own! You’ll have the freedom to stop wherever you please along the way and will wake up to amazing views if you’re sleeping in a van. This option is best if you’re travelling with at least one other person so you can split costs and will have some company along the way! Check here for car and campervan rental pricing and availability.

Travelling North Island by Train

Taking the train is another method you can use to get from one place to another in New Zealand. It’s not the most common option as it can sometimes be the pricier option compared to flying or driving. You can check the ticket prices here.

Travelling North Island by Bus

If you’re planning on travelling solo through the North Island, a hop-on, hop-off bus such as Kiwi Experience or Stray is a great option! The system allows you to travel from certain points within the country and secures a hostel stay the night of, so you don’t have to worry about accommodation ahead of time. Making friends is incredibly easy if you choose one of these options, making it one of the most popular methods for solo travellers to get around the country!

Travelling North Island by Plane

New Zealand has a number of airports and if you prefer to fly in and out of different New Zealand towns, then why not. The major airline in New Zealand is Air New Zealand.

Places to Visit When Travelling Around New Zealand’s North Island

With only a week (maybe more) to explore all that the North Island has to offer, we’re starting in Auckland and travelling down to Wellington before circling back to the starting point!

Day 1 – Auckland

Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city and there’s plenty to see and do. There are great cafes, restaurants and shopping throughout the city and many tourist attractions to keep you busy. Head to the SkyTower for panoramic views of Auckland, walk around the edge or even jump off – New Zealand is about adventure after all!

You can also hop on public transit to explore Mt. Eden for an easy 2km walk to a stunning view of the city. Mt. Eden is actually a sacred crater that you can see once you reach the top. Just be careful not to fall in! If you’re after a beach day, Mission Bay Beach is one of the closest beaches to the city and it won’t disappoint.

You can also opt to spend the day at Waiheke Island which you can get to by ferry. There are numerous beaches along the island and fun water activities to partake in.

Where to stay: Your last night of accommodation will be a train! The overnight train will take you back to Auckland to complete your trip. Or, it could be on New Zealand’s South Island after taking the Inter-Island Ferry. Or you can extend your time in Wellington.

While this 7 day North Island Itinerary is merely scratching the surface of New Zealand, it’s a great place to start.

Dreaming of a laidback year or two, spent working and travelling around the beautiful country of New Zealand? Well, you’re just in luck. A wide range of people from many countries around the globe can apply for a working holiday in New Zealand! With a New Zealand working holiday visa in hand, you can start packing your bags. Then head off on a wonderful adventure and a future full of new and exciting opportunities on a working holiday in New Zealand. This post updated March 2022.

New Zealand Working Holiday Visa Program

The working holiday visa program in New Zealand allows you to work and travel throughout New Zealand for up to 12 months or 23 months if you’re from the UK or Canada! You must be between the ages of 18 and 30 or 18 and 35 depending on the country you’re from.

You can find the full list of countries that are eligible to apply here.

When choosing to apply for the working holiday visa in New Zealand, you must have enough money to fund your plane ride back home. More specifically, they require you have $4,200 NZD before you arrive and must show evidence of the funds. You’ll also need to provide evidence of medical insurance in case something were to go wrong during your stay there. When applying it’s important to understand that the intention of this visa is to allow people to primarily travel around the country.

Whilst you can certainly work while living in New Zealand for the year, the holiday aspect is heavily pushed, which isn’t a bad thing! There are endless activities for nature lovers but New Zealand has a high cost of living so you’ll need to stay on top of your expenses while you’re there.

If you’re able to apply for the 23 month program, keep in mind that you’re only allowed to work 12 months in New Zealand, no matter what! That means if you stay for up to two years, you’ll only be allowed to work for one of them. If you choose to stay that long, you need to have extra money saved and you should account for additional expenses so you don’t find yourself in a bad position. If you’re simply planning on taking advantage of one year working in New Zealand, you can work the entire year but won’t be allowed to apply for permanent positions. We’ll get into your options later on in this post.

Those who are eligible for the 23 month long visa will also have to provide a General Medical Certificate. This is easy to obtain if you’re in your home country but more challenging to get if you’re already living or travelling someplace else!

When you’re ready to apply for your visa, you can do so through New Zealand’s government website. Here you’ll have to provide all documentation, including proof of current funds. The process can take a few weeks to months depending on how many applications are coming through!

Choosing Where to live in New Zealand

Auckland is a great place to start your working holiday in New Zealand

New Zealand is a small country, so it makes travelling around and seeing it all quite easy! You’ll probably want to settle in one place for the year or two but you could also opt for staying in a few different cities or towns if you like to change things up.

There are a few major cities where most of the country lives. This would be a good place to start if you’re not sure where you’d like to go. Before we jump into the different cities, you should consider what island you might want to start exploring. New Zealand has the North Island and South Island, both of which are beautiful!

You’ll find an international airport on each island, Auckland being home to the North Island’s and Christchurch being home to the South Island’s. Although both islands have lots to offer, they can be very different from each other and appeal to different people with varying interests.

The North Island is where you’ll find pristine beaches and a fairly warm climate year-round. There are some mountains as well which are great for hiking and some beach towns have spectacular surf!

The South Island is much cooler temperature-wise, which should come as no surprise with the mountainous landscape. The south is also known for its adventure activities, hiking and skiing and snowboarding in the winter months.

If you think you may enjoy the North Island best, you might want to consider living in Auckland or Wellington. Your best options for the South Island would be Christchurch or Queenstown. Either way, you’ll find a spot that feels right eventually and if you get sick of one place, you can easily move on to another.

Things To Do When You Arrive in New Zealand on a Working Holiday

The second you land in New Zealand, there will be a few things you’ll need to get in order!

1. Sort out your accommodation
2. Open a bank account
3. Get a SIM card
4. Find a job
5. Register for a Tax File Number

These can be done within the first few days of arriving and will help you settle in your short-term home.

Accommodation in New Zealand

Before you get to New Zealand, you’ll want to think about accommodation for the duration of your working holiday visa. Should you rent a place for a few months? Sign a year-long lease? Ultimately, it depends on what you want your experience to look like!

It’s best to start off with a short term rental at an Airbnb or book a hostel or hotel room for a week or two. That will give you enough time to get things organized when you arrive and determine your next steps.

Many on a working holiday in New Zealand will choose to stay in hostels long term but you can also find short leases as well. A great place to start looking for your accommodation would Facebook groups, HostelWorld or Booking.com.

If you choose to rent a room in an apartment, it’s not cheap. It will cost anywhere from $160 NZD to $210 NZD per week! Queenstown is also the most expensive place to live so if you’re hoping to settle somewhere more than a few months, you may want to take a look at your other options.

If you find you’re running low on money for accommodation, you can try a few different options such as WWOOFing and House Sitting.

Work Options in New Zealand

Hospitality jobs are popular with working holidaymakers

As mentioned at the start of this blog, you can find work throughout the country, so long as it’s not a permanent position! So what does that entail exactly? Job options vary depending on your preference and experience but you can expect to find jobs in certain industries much easier than others.

A great place to start looking for jobs or to get an idea of what jobs are available is on the New Zealand Backpacker Jobs Facebook Group!

Hospitality Jobs in New Zealand

Similarly to the Australian Working Holiday visa, you should have no trouble getting work in hospitality, especially if you’ve done it before. Many people work at hostels in exchange for free accommodation, which is a great position if you enjoy a laidback work environment and meeting lots of new people from around the world!

READ MORE: How to find A Job in A Hostel

You can also work in bars, restaurants or cafes as well. Since people come and go from these jobs on a regular basis, there are always positions available and they’re easy to leave behind when you’re done working and ready to travel.

Retail Jobs in New Zealand

Retail jobs are a great option for a casual position during your time in New Zealand. They pay minimum wage which isn’t bad considering it’s up to $20 NZD as of 2021! With many big cities around the country, you should have no problem finding a store to work at. It definitely helps to have experience but it shouldn’t be too challenging if you have any customer service related experience.

Horticulture Jobs in New Zealand

If you’ve never heard or horticulture, you’re not alone! It’s working with crops, fruit orchards or vineyards and it’s a huge industry throughout the country. Entry-level jobs in horticulture are easy to get without any relevant experience.

There’s work throughout the year depending on what you’re looking for in particular. For example, if you hope to work at a vineyard you should look for a summer position, meanwhile, indoor packhouse jobs can be done year-round.

Other Work Opportunities in New Zealand

Of course, if you aren’t thrilled by the thought of working in hospitality, retail or horticulture, there are other options to choose from. Some of which include:

• Tourism – With so many tourist attractions throughout New Zealand, it’s fairly easy to find a position. Queensland would be a great option if you love adventure activities such as skydiving, bungee jumping, mountain biking etc. If you find an activity you love, chances are that you can get hired to work there and teach others!

• Construction – Labour jobs such as construction are always in need. You’ll need to have relevant experience but they pay well and you’ll be able to find a position right away.

• Ski hills – If you’re interested in seasonal work, there are many ski hills open in the winter months. You can work as an instructor if you’re experienced or find a job a reception, for example.

• Farm work – Similarly to horticulture jobs, there’s also farmwork available. Dairy and sheep farming are the most prevalent options, which shouldn’t come as much of a surprise considering there are more sheep than humans living in New Zealand!

If you don’t have access to a car or don’t drive, you can use hop-on buses. Stray Travel or Kiwi Experience allow travellers to pick a route and travel as they please. It’s a great option for solo travellers who want to meet new people. It’s also great if you’re with a group of friends.
The New Zealand Snow Season is when?

The New Zealand snow season runs from June through to October and sometimes into November. The call for workers begins around January though resorts are hiring most of the year round. This is because resorts are open during the summer months also as the mountains offer great hiking and mountain bike riding when there is no snow. Most of the resorts advertise in the major newspapers or undertake recruitment through their websites.

Qualifications Required for General Hospitality Jobs

If you want to get a job in a New Zealand ski resort it is preferred you have some experience in the field of employment where you are seeking a position. Ski resorts have many hospitality positions available. From pulling beers and mixing drinks in a bar. Making coffee in a coffee shop. Waiting tables in a restaurant or cafe. Working on reception or as a house keeper in the vast number of ski lodges. Even selling ski lift tickets. Employers aren’t interested in training travellers as they know you are really only there for one season so the more skills you have, better the chances of getting a job in a New Zealand ski resort. Some of the luxury resorts may not even consider you without extensive experience or a formal qualification. Having a friendly personality and being able to convince an employer you can do the work will stand you in good stead.

Qualifications Required for Ski and Snowboard Instructors

You will need to be a fully qualified ski or snowboard instructor to work in the New Zealand ski resorts. Foreign Ski and Snowboard instructors may wish to contact the New Zealand Snowsports Instructors Alliance (NZSIA) www.nzsia.org. This organisation can advise about joining to allow use of an overseas qualification in New Zealand. The site also has some useful employment links.

New Zealand Ski Areas

New Zealand is made up of two major islands, the North Island and the South Island. There are 16 ski centres spread over both these two islands. Check out the map following. It shows you where the ski areas are.

North Island New Zealand Ski Resorts

The main ski area on the North Island is Mt Ruapehu www.mtruapehu.com a semi active volcano. This huge mountain is New Zealand’s largest and most developed ski area with over 1,150 hectares of skiable terrain. Its two major ski areas are Whakapapa on the northwest slopes and Turoa on the southwest slopes. Both are within a World Heritage National Park. It is about a sixty minute drive between resorts. The resort caters to 400,000 skiers and snowboarders each year and employers around 700 seasonal workers.

South Island New Zealand Ski Resorts

Most of the ski activity occurs on the South Island where there are three major ski centres. Queenstown is the major city at the bottom of the mountains and is the heart of what is considered to be New Zealand’s premier ski region. Queenstown has been voted one of the most beautiful towns in the world. It’s surrounded by ski-scraping mountains that are capped in snow during winter. This incredible scenery often lures tourists to Queenstown year after year. The town offers visitors an abundance of accommodation, retail outlets, restaurants and bars. At the end of a hard day skiing or snowboarding you could enjoy Queenstown’s famous apes ski. If you don’t find work in one of the resorts in New Zealand you may be lucky in this town.

Queenstown is the stepping stone to some of the best ski slopes in New Zealand. Deep powder snow is common in these parts with ski areas offering outstanding terrain for all levels of skiers and snow boarders. You can easily ski three great areas. Coronet Peak is just 18km away, The Remarkables and Cardrona some 30km away, Treble Cone is another great ski area. Each of these resort areas require numerous staff to run efficiently. Great news if you want to work a ski season in New Zealand.

If staying in Christchurch you can take a shuttle bus to the Canterbury Plains ski fields. The best known ski slope here is Mount Hutt which is nestled high inside the eastern rim of the Southern Alps. Mount Hutt itself is a big bowl-shaped mountain. The steep off-piste sidewalls and the renowned South Face cater for advanced skiers and shredders.
