They say that Formula One is the pinnacle of motorsport however, us fans of V8 Supercars in Australia would beg to differ. Still, being a Formula 1 fan attending one of the Formula 1 Grand Prix races was a bucket list thing for me. So I did my research so I could attend a Formula 1 race, and that race was the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix. That was some 10 years ago and even though I don’t go every year, I always watch.

In this post, I’m going to cover what you need to know to attend a Formula 1 race. So if you want to watch cars reach incredible speeds of around 200km/h (124mph) driven by the world’s best drivers, then read on.

What is Formula 1?

 

For any car novices, Formula One, commonly known as Formula 1 or F1 is the highest class of international racing for open-wheel single-seater formula racing cars. Wow! In this type of motorsport, teams compete in a series of races, known as Grand Prix races that are held in different countries around the world. They usually last for 3-4 days where you get to see the cars in practice sessions, qualifying time trials to see where each car will start on the grid before the race.

 

Why attend a Formula 1 Race?

 

It is probably the atmosphere as a whole as to explain why attend a Formula 1 race. It is the vibration of the cars, the noise of the cars and the possibility of seeing your favourite driver!

The noise is one good reason not to attend. The noise can be deafening. And to be quite honest, I have found, depending on the location of seat, that you only get a fleeting glimpse of the cars. This is because they go so fast. If you blink you can miss them going past! So is spending all that money on a ticket worth it? I sometimes feel you get to see more on the TV! But you make up your own mind.

 

How to Attend a Formula One Race?

 

Each year, the dates of the races are announced. Then each country will organise to sell tickets to attend the event in their country. You need to be quick to get a ticket as they are often snapped up in hours of being released. You’ve bought your ticket and race weekend has arrived. I believe, after having gone to a couple of F1 races now that the best way to enjoy it is to come prepared.  It can be a very long day, and weekend if you have bought a ticket for every day. Following are my tried and tested tips and tricks to help you make the most of attending a F1 carnival.

Firstly, if you are a newbie to going to a F1 race, you will need to know how a Formula 1 weekend for the Grand Prix race works. You have probably bought a ticket to multiple days, so yep, find your spot and watch the practices, qualifying and the race.

The F1 calendar has over two dozen races which are in different countries around the world. To attend a Formula 1 race you will need to do the following:

• Choose which race you would like to attend – refer to the list.
• Purchase a ticket.
• Organise transport and accommodation. Plus transport to and from the event.

Types of Tickets to Attend a Formula 1 Race

 

There are different tickets available to attend a Formula 1 Grand Prix. Sometimes they sell out very quickly, so it is a good idea to have in your mind the type of ticket you would like. Tickets include:

• General Admission. General admission comes with no reserved seating. Sometimes you’ll fight it out to find a spot in one of the many grassy sections on the track. 
• Grandstand, uncovered seating. Each Formula 1 race offers grandstand seating under various names – usually of racing related people to that country. There will also be different classes of seats and you should be able to see online which seating is uncovered. 
• Grandstand, covered seating. Grandstand covered seating are the prime seating offering the best spots to see the race. Possibly opposite pit lane! These tickets are generally the most expensive.

 

How much does it cost to attend a Formula 1 Race?

 

I cannot give you an exact price here because it will vary from country to country. So, get yourself a check list.

1. Cost of the Ticket
2. Transport to/from the City (don’t forget to have a valid passport and the appropriate visa if coming from another country)
3. Accommodation
4. Sightseeing in the city, if you’re planning on seeing some of the city
5. Transport to/from the track (taxis, shuttles, rental car, parking costs)
6. Food at the track (can you take your own with you)
7. Any merchandise you may want to purchase

 

What to Wear to the Track

 

Dress appropriately for the day and particularly the weather. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes.

Following is my suggested checklist of items to take to the track.

• Ticket
• Water bottle with water and maybe electrolytes, especially if it’s a hot day! I take my collapsable water bottle most places.
• Ear plugs (very important to numb the noise)
• Rain coat (always bring a raincoat!)
• Spare power pack for your phone to get photos and video
• Snacks
• Sunscreen, Hat and Sunglasses
• Small towel or beach towel to aid with sun protection, sweating – or simply to sit on if are in the general area.
• Binoculars, if you’re sitting far from the action

Of all the places I’ve plunged into, one destination stands out for its unique blend of history and aquatic life. The USS Kittiwake wreck in Grand Cayman.

Located off the shores of Seven Mile Beach, the Kittiwake is a former U.S. Navy Submarine Rescue vessel. It was intentionally sunk in 2011 to create an artificial reef. Diving around this 251-foot-long shipwreck feels like a journey through time. It’s more than a haunting maritime relic, it’s teeming with life and is a thriving ecosystem. Lots of fish, turtles, nurse and reef sharks, even though there are better spots for shark-diving in the Cayman Islands call it home.

The beauty of this dive spot is its accessibility to divers of varying experience levels. Novices can explore the top decks sitting in 15 feet of water. Advanced divers can delve into deeper sections and penetrate the wreck itself. Fancy exploring the engine room, crew quarters, and recompression chambers? The clarity of the Caribbean water around the Kittiwake is astonishing, offering excellent visibility even at depths.

Every dive brings new discoveries, keeping the Kittiwake fresh and exciting. As you navigate its rusting chambers and corridors, it’s impossible not to feel a sense of awe at nature’s capacity for rebirth. For this reason, the Kittiwake holds a special place in my heart and dive log. I highly recommend it to any diver looking for their next underwater adventure.

I love diving Bonaire for its accessibility to dive sites. With over 80 shore dive locations, it’s a haven for divers of all levels. From beginners seeking calm, shallow waters to a seasoned divers searching more challenging dives, Bonaire caters to your needs.

There are so many easy shore dives. You and a dive buddy can rent dive gear, a car and explore the dive sites on your own. For most scuba divers it’s a unique experience to dive without having to join a dive school. And this makes it more economical. The dive shops in Bonaire are great and provide information and guidance ensuring you can dive sites safely. And choose the ones that suit you.

Among the Bonaire dive sites, the famous “Salt Pier” stands out. Descending into the depths beneath the pier is unique. The pillars covered in colorful sponges and corals tower above you, while schools of vibrant fish dance around you. The dive site is popular for spotting angelfish and sea turtles. It’s where I saw one of the largest stingrays I’ve ever seen anywhere in the world! If you’re looking for a night dive, Salt Pier is a great spot also.

The island’s Marine Park covers over 20 miles of protected coastline keeping the dive sites pristine and teeming with life. Bonaire’s underwater world is a living testament to the importance of preserving our oceans.

Diving at the Bay of Pigs in Cuba is a fabulous historic experience, easy and interesting from a marine life perspective. This is the location of the 1967 failed US invasion of Cuba and you can dive the Bay of Pigs from Playa Giron or Playa Larga. If you want to dive on some of the historic wrecks you’ll need to dive from a boat. But most of the diving here is shore-based, which makes it both cheaper and easier for beginners.

Diving the Bay of Pigs costs just US$25 a dive, which includes all your equipment, a dive master leader, and transport to and from your hotel or casa particular. Beginners can take a taster dive here for an additional US$10 and take the same dive bus as qualified divers. Divemasters here speak several languages. And provide a great service, pointing out marine life, including lobsters and lionfish, which is sadly a problem as an invasive species here. Before heading to Cartagena, I made my first stop in Colombia at the beautiful destination of Capurgana. It’s located in the extreme northwest of Colombia, on the Panamanian border.

People said that the Rosario Islands and San Bernardo Archipelago have clear waters with marine life, but most of the reefs there are dead. Since I am a scuba diver for years, I chose to take an underwater adventure and discover the magnificent wildlife it has to offer. Indeed Capurgana is one of the most beautiful places on earth that has managed to preserve its coral reef due to its difficult access and lack of mass tourism.

I was amazed to find out that this hidden gem has an abundance of marine life. Manta rays, turtles, reef sharks, moray eels, barracudas and many more. There are also plenty of beautiful coral formations, sponges and colorful fish that make it a wonderful place to explore. For more experienced divers, there are several shipwrecks to explore and deeper dives that will keep you entertained and wanting more.

Diving with manta rays in Addu Atoll, Maldives, offers an extraordinary experience for experienced divers. Located in the southernmost part of the Maldives, Addu Atoll boasts stunning dive sites known for their diverse marine life, including frequent manta ray encounters.  

The manta cleaning station at Manta Point is at about 25 metres with a strong current running into the atoll. The dive begins on the outer edge of the atoll with a free dive into the blue before finning into the area where the mantas come into the cleaning station. This looks like a flat bare piece of reef, but as the mantas approach the smaller cleaner fish appear. Despite being an experienced diver, I found this part of the dive quite hard as the currents are strong. 

Once over the cleaning station it is essential to hook onto the reef and wait for the manta rays to appear. For most of the dive the line on the reef hook will vibrate in the current. The manta rays emerge from the blue and circle a few times before heading into the cleaning station. It was a mesmerising and magical moment having these giants swim over the top of our heads.

Imagine a dive site with warm waters, 20 to 30 metres of visibility, abundant marine life, and healthy corals. This is exactly what you get when you dive at Neil Island. Neil Island is one of the islands in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India. There are many dive sites around the island where divers can experience unique marine life. Being a Rescue diver, I did recreational dives at two dive sites, Angry Jo, and Bus Stop and both dives were at a depth of 20 to 30 metres.

With a large population of marine life, this dive site is perfect for all kinds of experienced divers. Groupers, Sting Rays, Sweet lips, Barracudas, Clown fishes, and Tunas are common at these sites. They also have special visitors such as Dugongs and Manta rays. And for the micro marine lovers, these sites do not disappoint them as well as there are plenty of colourful nudi branches. During my dives at these sites, I saw large schools of sweet lips fishes, Blue Spotted Sting Ray, turtles, snappers, barracudas, octopus, and tunas.

As I am a fan of warm waters with clear visibility, diving at Neil Island is surely my top-notch diving experience in India. In fact, the water was so perfect that I dived with just my swimmers and did not need a wetsuit. And getting to see such active and varied marine life added to my overall experience.

At over 2000km long, there are no shortage of amazing dive sites on the Great Barrier Reef. One of our favourite locations is Norman Reef near Cairns. This is a great part of the reef for beginners or experienced divers. Day tours from Cairns can get you to Norman Reef from the Cairns Marina in North Queensland.

There are a few things we love about this dive. First there is a lot to see at 6-10m deep where the light still lets you see some good colour in the corals and marine life. The clarity of the water is amazing, the visibility can be up to 30m.

Norman Reef is a wall of coral where you see everything from loads of colourful tropical fish and clown fish to exquisite nudibranchs. Opposite the reef is open water with coral bommies and sandy bottom where you can spot resident sea turtles, black and white tipped reef sharks and beautiful blue spotted rays.

There is also a giant Māori wrasse that calls Norman Reef home. It has a habit of appearing out of nowhere and follow along as we drift after sharks and turtles. While you have so many amazing options on the Great Barrier Reef, Norman Reef offers a lot for divers spending some time in Cairns.

One of the best places in the world to dive with sharks is on a tiny atoll in the South Pacific. Fakarava’s South Pass is home to hundreds of sharks, and the dives are incredible!

Fakarava is an atoll in the Tuamotus, and takes over an hour by plane from Tahiti. The highlight of visiting this island with 800 residents is shark diving in the South Pass. Several dive shops cater to underwater adventure seekers in this French Polynesian paradise.

Diving the Tetamanu Pass entails drift diving surrounded by sharks. While the most common are grey reef sharks, black and white tips, lemon, tiger sharks and hammerheads also live and hunt in these tropical waters. Dive leaders will stop the group to focus on particular sharks or marine life, and we had to grip onto dead coral, so wear gloves.

As an experienced diver with instructor credentials, I found diving the Tetamanu Pass exhilarating. The current can be strong, whisking you past countless sharks and other sea life. The swift pace doesn’t detract from the amazing glimpses at sea life.

If you want a 360 underwater shark experience, Tetamanu Pass in Fakarava is the scuba dive to do!

 

Okinawa, Japan

When it comes to diving, Okinawa, Japan is highly underrated. Okinawa has hundreds of coral species that are home to tropical fish and many other marine wildlife. Okinawa has a sub-tropical climate and diving can be experienced throughout the year.

One of my favorite scuba diving spots in Okinawa is the Sunabe Seawall. Sunabe Seawall is located in the Chatan area of Okinawa so it is accessible to everyone. You don’t have to book any special tours, simply rent gear and head to the seawall to see the beautiful coral reefs and unique marine wildlife.

Sunabe Seawall is perfect for all levels of diving from the absolute beginner to advanced. The average depth here is around 5-10 meters with a maximum depth around 20 meters. You could spend hours exploring the reefs and I see new animals every dive. Some of my favorite marine life here are the groups of barracuda. They swim in schools of hundreds if not thousands. It is peaceful watching them swim by. Other sea life I’ve seen at Sunabe Seawall include sea snakes, clown fish, cuttlefish, batfish, and hundreds of smaller tropical fish.

One of the best scuba diving spots can be found in Zanzibar, more particularly, at Mnemba Atoll. It’s the place where I did my scuba diving certification. Mnemba Atoll is the most famous Conservation area in Zanzibar. It offers crystal-clear water, an abundance of fish, and colorful wall dives, basically, a paradise for scuba divers!

There are many great diving spots around Mnemba Atoll, suitable for beginner and experienced divers. We chose a place south of the Atoll which was medium level. Some of the most common species of fish I spotted include clownfish, false clownfish, trumpetfish, boxfish, zebrafish, butterflyfish, unicornfish, blackspot emperor, and even a small lionfish. Spotted snake eels and white moray eels are other very common sea animals as well as differently colored starfish. If you’re lucky, you might even encounter turtles or dolphins – unfortunately, I didn’t!

So if you’re looking for some unforgettable underwater experiences, definitely try scuba diving in Zanzibar!

The Gili Islands, nestled off the northwest coast of Lombok, Indonesia, hold a special place as a scuba diver in my heart. These tiny islands, Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, and Gili Meno, boast breathtaking underwater landscapes that captivate me.

My favourite spot among them is undoubtedly Gili Trawangan. The vibrant coral reefs teeming with life make it a paradise for experienced divers like me. The crystal-clear turquoise waters offer excellent visibility, allowing me to immerse myself in the awe-inspiring beauty of the marine world.

What sets the Gili Islands apart is the variety of dive sites suited for all levels of expertise. From gentle slopes and shallow reefs perfect for beginners to challenging deep walls and thrilling drift dives for the more experienced, there’s something for everyone. The abundance of marine life you can see including turtles, colourful reef fish, and occasional encounters with sharks, ensures each dive is a unique and unforgettable experience.

Who here wants to dive in almost freezing water? Come on, no one? I’m sure you’re tired of all of these tropical diving spots by now! I know it sounds like something you won’t ever want to do, but hear me out.

Picture this: you’re submerged in crystal-clear water, surrounded by a breathtaking underwater landscape. Silfra is famous for its amazing visibility, making it a dream come true for all divers I know. Seriously, on a sunny day, the water here is so clear, it’s like diving into a giant, liquified diamond and you feel that you can see deep inside the Earth.

And yes, it’s cold, my friends. But you know what the Northerners say. “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes”. With the right gear, you’ll be ready to conquer the freezing temperatures and embark on an unforgettable adventure.

Now, what sets Silfra apart from other dive sites? Well, this place is truly unique, and I don’t mean it like all bloggers say “unique” these days, I mean it like “there’s no other place like this in the world”. Silfra is located in Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a place of deep historic meaning for the Icelandic people.

Not only does it offer a once-in-a-lifetime diving experience, it’s also situated in the rift between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. HMCS Yukon, San Diego

In 2000, the 366 foot HMCS Yukon sank two miles off the coast of San Diego’s Mission Bay. It rests in the depths of the Pacific Ocean in a playground for advanced divers known as “Wreck Alley”. This is one of the best scuba diving spots for wreck diving on the USA’s West Coast.

As a deep dive, the Yukon rests at 100 feet, pushing the limits of recreational diving. It is necessary to have an advanced certification to manage a variety of factors. Dangerous surge, currents, cold water and darkness can complicate the dive. Not to mention, your air will likely outlast your bottom time.

I explored the Yukon shipwreck as part of my advanced underwater certification. To be frank, scuba diving at the Yukon is cold and dark. As we donned our hoods, thick 7 mm wetsuits, and gloves the gear felt oppressive. Yet, even with all this equipment, the cold water sent a chill down my spine. Was it the temperature, or the apprehension of what lurked in the depths that had me unsettled?

Beneath the surface, the abandoned ship houses a thriving artificial reef teeming with sea life. As you navigate the wreck, you can see large anemones, mollusks, and schools of colorful fish. At this site you can explore the bridge, gun turrets or penetrate the interior of the ship. But do so wisely, five divers have lost their lives here.

Without a doubt, the HMCS Yukon shipwreck is one of the best scuba diving spots that attracts divers from around the globe. Although the dive is challenging, it is sure to be one of the most memorable dives of your life.

 

Galápagos Islands

Most dive vacations to the Galapagos Islands are taken from liveaboard boats, but you can also take day diving trips from some of the islands. The waters around the Galapagos are known for their rare wildlife and can be dived year-round. There are hammerhead sharks – and more than 30 other species of sharks to be found here, rays, turtles, and the marine iguana. Diving here tends to be for advanced divers, with stronger currents and choppy water, but it’s well worth it.  It’s something of a magical experience to be in this environment – with marine life all around. One of the most abundant sharks here is the white-tipped reef sharks, which are found across all of the 18 islands of the Galapagos. Diving from land is boat based and tends to be in small groups, so you’ll get great attention from your dive leader, although qualifications are essential.

 

Sipadan Island, Borneo, Malaysia

Sipadan Island in Borneo, Malaysia is widely acclaimed as one of the best locations for Scuba diving in the world. This underwater wonder rise to fame when it was described by famous ocean explorer, Jacques Cousteau, as one of the most beautiful reefs to dive in the world. Only a couple of meters from the shore a massive wall drops 300 meters deep to the ocean floor covered in a spectacular coral garden. Strong currents flowing over the reef create an amazing wall dive. Huge green turtles, big schools of massive bump-head parrot fish, thousands of trevallies, and big packs of reef sharks are seen during a typical dive at Sipadan.

Barracuda Point is the highlight for most divers exploring the island. At this dive site, divers can be surrounded by massive schools of barracuda swimming around the island often forming a barracuda vortex!  This is an advanced dive spot due to strong currents and regulations in 2023 changed, a minimum advanced qualification is now required to dive at Sipadan island.

The Malaysian government decided to protect Sipadan for future generations by forcing all resorts to leave the island. Only a limited number of divers are allowed per day and this is strictly regulated.

Most dive trips to Sipadan are done from the nearby islands of Mabul and Kapalai. Only 200 dive permits are issued for diving here per day, so book your permit ahead!

 

Kauai, Hawaii

Kauai is probably the Hawaiian Island that’s least renowned for its scuba diving. Due to the harsh currents and waves that make it more difficult for coral to grow here.

But this is a huge oversight—what it lacks in colorful coral reefs, Kauai scuba diving more than makes up for in its unique underwater landscape of volcanic arches and tunnels and best of all, incredible wildlife. In fact, beyond just tropical fish and sea turtles (which there are MANY of!), it’s not uncommon for divers to see dolphins, manta rays, white tip sharks, and even humpback whales here!

There’s also a diverse range of dive sites. From tours that are offered to non-certified divers to challenging drift dives that require at least 30 dives under your (dive) belt.

As a relatively newbie scuba diver, I did my first ever shore dive at Koloa Landing. This has been voted one of the best shore dives in the Pacific by Scuba Diving Magazine. It definitely lives up to the hype. During my two dives here, I saw over a dozen sea turtles, moray eels, barracuda, and even a small octopus!

Once I’ve racked up more dives, it’s definitely on my bucket list to come to Kauai to go on a dive at the Island of Niihau. About two and a half hours off its coast, the water around this island, which functions as a private colony for Native Hawaiians, is known for being some of the best diving on the planet. Offering wildlife spotting from monk seals and manta rays to even hammerhead sharks.

 

Komodo National Park, Indonesia

Komodo National Park is famous for being the only habitat of the world’s largest lizard, but its waters are also a mecca for large marine creatures and strong drifts.

Starting from Labuan Bajo, on the island of Flores, Indonesia, the main diving spots are split into three areas. Central, North, and South Komodo, with Central and North areas being most popular.

Komodo National Park welcomes divers of all levels. However, beginners should have prior diving experience and feel comfortable with drift diving. The central area is better for open water certification holders. While the top dive sites in the north are further and require advanced certification.

The diving at Komodo National Park is known for its large sea creatures swimming amongst sprawling coral, featuring excellent visibility exceeding 30 meters. One of the highlights of diving in Komodo is encountering massive schools of fish, where you can swim through swirling mass of reef fish. The park’s strong currents attract a variety of pelagic species, including sharks and manta rays, creating a feeding frenzy in nutrient-rich waters.

Batu Bolong and Castle Rock are exciting drift dive sites. While Manta Point is the go-to spot for encountering those graceful underwater giants the site’s named after. The park is also home to various shark species, including whitetip and blacktip reef sharks. And if you’re lucky, you might even spot the elusive oceanic sunfish, the Mola Mola.

Utila Island is heaven for divers. Having been scuba diving in many locations across central America, it is definitely one of my favourite spots. And the cheapest place we for diving.

The conditions around Utila are ideal for all kinds of divers from beginners to advanced. A highlight from diving at Utila is the deep dive down to an impressive sunken ship covered in life. As well as the night diving. The conditions near the island are ideal for night dives, and the experience is just magical. Once your eyes adjust you can see thousands of illuminescent specs floating around you almost like stars.

Not only this, but Utila Island is located right on the second biggest barrier reef in the world. Meaning there is more coral and sea life than you can imagine. From tiny fish to giant whale sharks (when the season is right) I even got to jump in with some dolphins while there. Another great perk is that most of the dive sites are really close to the island so you don’t have to spend a long time on the boat.

Utila is a small Island that is relatively undeveloped and the main thing to do there is diving. There are plenty of great dive shops to choose from. The community spirit on the island among fellow divers was really fun to be a part of too.

 

Tulamben, Bali, Indonesia

If you asked me to name my top diving spot, without a second thought, I’d say Tulamben. Nestled on the northeastern coast of Bali, Indonesia, this quaint fishing village has become my underwater haven, especially for macro diving.

So what’s the magic of Tulamben? It’s the sheer variety of marine life. The place is a hotbed for macro critters, a veritable wonderland of nudibranchs, harlequin shrimps, seahorses, frogfish, and the elusive mimic octopus. Each dive feels like a new adventure, a treasure hunt where you’re not sure what fascinating tiny creature you’ll discover next.

And then there’s the USAT Liberty wreck, just a stone’s throw from the shore. This sunken World War II cargo ship is adorned with colorful corals and teeming with life, is an underwater spectacle. Diving here feels like flipping through the pages of a living history book, with each corner narrating a unique story.

Unlike the challenging dives in Komodo, the serene and clear waters make it a perfect playground for beginners. To truly soak in the charm of Tulamben and its macro life, you need a well-controlled buoyancy and a sharp eye – skills that come with experience. This makes Tulamben a real gem for seasoned divers.

In a nutshell, Tulamben is a diver’s dream come true. A perfect blend of history, vibrant marine life, and the thrill of discovery. It’s a place that keeps pulling you back, always offering something new and exciting with each dive.

 

Coron, Philippines

If you are an avid scuba diver, then you will want to visit the magnetic undersea wonders found in Coron, Philippines. This cluster of islands has become most well known for WWII shipwrecks that are permanently entombed off the shores of Coron.

This is a great location for divers of different skills as you can complete your Advanced Open Water Certification as well as Wreck Dive Training. I completed four dives of these amazing wrecks with Corto Divers to complete my certification. This is an excellent location to enjoy the view while completing your required dives rather than just going through the skills for certification.

Beneath the waters of Coron, you will find not just one ship but a full fleet of 12 well-preserved World War II Japanese War Ships which are at diveable depths. You can swim around the shipwrecks, which are approximately 35 meters deep. A great spot to do some diving is Barracuda Lake which is very clear and has thermoclines and underwater mountains.

Another unique shipwreck that has become part of the natural environment is the Lusong Gunboat that is covered in coral and is fun to swim around and explore. Lastly, Coron offers the opportunity to do some night diving as it has bioluminescent plankton that glows in the dark.

 

Cabo Pulmo, Mexico

My favourite diving experience to date was in the tiny, remote town of Cabo Pulmo. Home to one of the only coral reefs on the west coast of North America, Cabo Pulmo is nestled in the southeast corner of Baja California Sur, Mexico. Far off the beaten track down a long dusty road, it is primarily visited by scuba divers.

Although there is much life to see underwater, from whales to rays, turtles and dolphins, I came to Cabo Pulmo for one reason – sharks. This is one of the only places in Mexico where you are almost guaranteed (my divemaster said around 90% likelihood!) to dive with bull sharks. Considered one of the more aggressive species of shark, my heart was racing as we geared up and rolled back into the water. After descending around 15 metres / 50 feet, we reached the sandy floor and carefully knelt down. Within a few minutes at least five huge sharks were circling around us.

Despite our group’s best efforts, we churned up a lot of sand, making visibility very hazy. Combined with huge schools of groupers swimming past, it was incredibly dark and ominous down there. Although I was mildly terrified throughout the dive and didn’t want to look the sharks directly in the eye, it was such a thrilling experience! Made even more special knowing this was a completely natural experience, no cages, and no cruel and unethical baiting.

Diving with bull sharks in Cabo Pulmo is accessible to both advanced and beginner divers. The site where the sharks are known to hang around is only a max depth of approximately 15m/50ft, fine for Open Water divers. It’s not a technical dive, and most of the time is spent calmly sitting on the ocean floor waiting for the sharks to approach.

 

Elephant Cave, Crete

Greece is a favorite spot for divers in Europe and the island of Crete is no exception. While you can technically dive all along the coastline, the most famous dive site in Crete is the Elephant Cave in Chania.

Not far from the city of Chania in the north of Crete is the small harbor in Souda. From here dive centers depart to take you to the cave. Diving is usually done from small zodiacs and it takes about 15 minutes to get to the dive site.

While it is called Elephant Cave it can actually be classified as a cavern and is therefore suitable for Open Water divers as well. Its entrance lies at about 9 m depth and you can always see and access the surface from the inside.

Once you are by the entrance you will need to swim for about 40 m until you get to the main chambers of the cave where you can ascend and take out your regulator. Most dive centers will give you a torch so you can admire the beautiful and ancient stalagmites and stalactites that cover the cave. Why Elephant Cave? You can also see a few fossilised elephant bones at the bottom of the cave floor. These 50,000-year-old bones are proof that Crete was once part of Africa – a truly amazing find!

 

Cenote Diving, Mexico

There are many fantastic diving spots all around the world, but the cenotes in Mexico are undeniably among the very best. With their intricate speleological formations, haloclines, and light plays, they are a marvelous environment for every diver.

I fell in love with cenote dive in Mexico after the very first dive and loved the glimpse into cavern and cave diving these dives granted me. While exploring the overhead environment of the cenotes, you enter a magical underwater world unlike any other. It is more than worth it to wait for this experience until you have excellent buoyancy control and a good sense of situational awareness.

While it is nice to explore the open area of cenotes like Case Cenote and Cenote Car Wash, it is ultimately the fully or partially closed areas that are best. It is these areas where you get to see unique formations. Marvelous light displays ranging from the light beams of Cenote Tajma Ha to the curtain of light in Cenote Ponderosa or the light rays of Cenote El Pit. And of course, there is also Cenote Angelita with its thick hydrogen sulfide cloud.

When it comes to cenote diving, the variety of things to see is unparalleled, and I can only encourage every passionate diver to experience it for themselves.

Scuba Diving Explained

 

So what is scuba diving? Well, after a quick search of the internet for a definition, what I found was that scuba diving is a water sport that involves breathing air from a tank while underwater. Scuba in fact is an acronym for Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus. Being able to scuba dive allows you to explore underwater environments like reefs, quarries, cenotes, lakes, large aquariums or any body of water.

 

The Road to a Scuba Diving Career

 

Before you can teach other people to scuba dive, you need to learn to scuba dive yourself. Now, there are different qualifications or certifications you gain so you can scuba dive. So how do you become a certified diver?

 

Recreational Certifications

 

There are 3 basic recreational levels that allow you to become a scuba diver. They are Open Water, Advanced Open Water and Rescue (which includes Emergency First Responder qualification). With one or all of these certifications you will be able to explore some of the best underwater worlds in the world including some of the best dive sites in South-east Asia – which I am hoping to discover soon. It is top of my best places for scuba diving in world list. But you cannot work in the scuba industry with these certifications, only enjoy scuba diving. To work in the scuba diving industry as a scuba dive instructor you will need a professional certification.

 

Professional Certifications

 

The two professional certifications required to work in the dive industry are Divemaster and Instructor certifications. The main difference being a Divemaster guides certified divers to dive or assists an instructor in the teaching process, but cannot teach courses without the supervision of an instructor. A Scuba Instructor is the one who provides the training to students who want to learn to dive and gain their certification. With either one of these dive qualifications you can gain work in the dive industry to travel and work abroad.

 

The Pros and Cons of Being a Scuba Diving Instructor or Divemaster

 

Before you become a scuba diving instructor or divemaster you may want to know is it worth your while first. At the moment, you may just want to dive in some of the best dive spots around the world! Right? 

The biggest advantages to taking the next step and becoming a qualified scuba diving instructor or divemaster would be that you can work and travel the world, train people in your diving passion and be paid for it. • You are responsible for the safety of your students.
• You may just want to dive great dive spots around the world as a scuba diver rather than having the responsibility that comes with a scuba diving instructor job.
• Work hours can be very long and salaries aren’t always the best.
• Jobs are mostly tourism based and can be seasonal.

 

Types of Scuba Diving Jobs besides Instructing

 

Teaching scuba diving is one of the more accessible entry-level positions if you are seeking to make a living in underwater scuba diving. You could work for a dive shop, on an island resort taking people out diving or even on a superyacht! However, with a scuba diving qualification you can get different jobs around the world including:

 

• Underwater Photographer – If you are a keen photographer, add these skills to your diving and sell your photography around the world. You will need underwater photography equipment.
• Public Safety Diver – the name changes for different parts of the world. Basically, public safety diving refers to the underwater work carried out by authorities such as search and rescue teams or police.
• Scientific Diver – someone who works for a marine organisation to research underwater environments to collect information on marine environments. 
• Dive Centre Manger – If you don’t want to dive all the time, get a job in a dive centre or shop and oversee the training of dive courses and dive excursions. Many with the divemaster qualification will be a dive centre manager.
• Underwater stunt person – Movie and TV show makers seek divers to coordinate underwater stunts. You could use your diving abilities to ensure diving stunts are safe. And you could be on screen as a body double!
• Commercial Diver – commercial divers are paid to carry out construction, inspection or exploration tasks for oil, gas, construction, engineering or shipping companies. So you could work offshore in the oil and gas industry or inland in lakes, rivers and harbours working on bridges and dams.

 

However, this post is about becoming a scuba diving instructor to teach others to scuba dive rather than the type of scuba diving jobs available. I’ve only mentioned the above to advise you what you could do with a scuba diving qualification. Note: these jobs usually require you to have further qualifications in the field of work.

 

What About Visas for Scuba Diving Instructors and Divemasters?

 

Having a scuba diving instructor qualification will mean you can teach other’s to dive anywhere in the world. Many positions are tourism related, so where it is popular to dive, is where people like to get their qualification to dive. South-east Asia, the Caribbean and Australia are popular dive destinations. Not all dive organisations will provide a visa to sponsor you to work for them, however, some do. If not successful with a work permit and aged 18-35 years, check out countries with a working holiday visa available.

 

How Much Can You Earn as a Scuba Diving Instructor

 

You are probably wondering how much do scuba instructors make. How much you can earn as a scuba diving instructor will depend on the employer and where you are in your journey. When starting out, you are going to be at the bottom for a while and maybe competing with others. Put in a little extra leg work with more training and qualifications and you will work your way up the ladder. But how much can you make you ask? Well, how long is a piece of string!

The salary of a scuba diving instructor can depend on what part of the world you are working in. For instance, in Hawaii, an experienced diving instructor could be on around US$25,000 while it could be lower in Asia. Depending on where the job is, you may have accommodation included which make living costs lower. Many instructors work on a casual basis, as tourism is often seasonal so you could be paid hourly and only work a few hours a day or a few days per week. Some may only pay you for face-to-face time with clients. Know what is on offer before accepting.

So will you become a millionaire working in the dive industry on a scuba diving instructor salary? Probably not, it is more the ‘diving lifestyle’ that attracts people to the dive industry. You could travel and work around the world or set up your own diving business in your favourite part of the world.

Choose the Diving Organisation to Gain Your Scuba Diving Instructor Qualification

 

There are a few organisations to gain a qualification. The top three are:

• PADI – Professional Association of Diving Instructors
• SSI – Scuba Schools International
• NAUI – National Association of Underwater Instructors

There are other organisations as well, but out of all of them, PADI is the most recognised around the world.

 

How to Become a Scuba Diving Instructor – The Steps

 

The steps to become a scuba diving instructor are consistent no matter who you choose to get your qualification with. Here are the main steps:

 

Step One: Meet the IDC (Instructor Development Course) Prerequisites

 

To start your dive instructor training you must:

• Be at least 18 years old
• Be a certified diver for at least six months
• Hold a divemaster certification (or qualifying certification)
• Have at least 60 logged dives (100 logged dives will be required to receive your instructor credentials)
• Hold a current CPR and First Aid certification and maybe Emergency First Response certification
• Have an in-date medical approval to scuba dive

Note: To have your divemaster certification you will have the following recreational scuba diving certificates:
Scuba Diver – this initial certification allows you to dive to maximum depth of 12m / 40 feet.
Open Water Diver – allows you to dive independently.
Advanced Open Water Diver – allows you to dive deeper – 30m / 100 feet.
Rescue Diver – this helps you be a much safer diver.
Master Scuba Diver – this is the highest recreational scuba diving certification level and can dive deep, or do night and wreck diving. With this, you then meet a prerequisite of gaining your professional scuba diving instructor qualification or divemaster qualification.

 

Step Two: complete the IDC

 

By the time you begin the IDC, you will already have great diving skills so the IDC is usually spent in the classroom covering:

• How to give classroom presentations
• How to work with students in confined water (a pool or pool-like environment) and open water
• Risk management
• How to market yourself as an Instructor

 

Step Three: Pass the Instructor Exam

 

After completing the IDC, you will be eligible to take the Instructor Exam. As long as you pass that, voila, qualified as a scuba diving instructor.

 

How Much Does the Dive Instructor Qualification cost?

 

The cost of gaining your qualification as a dive instructor can vary and depend on the inclusions in the course. Costs to be covered will include the IDC training, instructor materials, exam fee, your diving equipment, living/travelling expenses while on the course plus DAN insurance. How to Find a Job in the Dive Industry

 

Once you having your dive instructor qualification or divemaster qualification you could look for dive instructor jobs and divemaster jobs. Keep in mind, having a second language is helpful in your job search as you can get a job in foreign lands (waters) abroad. Same as having a very customer service attitude as many people you come in contact with will be on holiday. Check out:

In my opinion, hiking is one of the best forms of exercise and therapy for my body and soul! I’ve been hiking for years from a few hours to a couple of days during my world travels. And I’ve learnt the hard way sometimes about my choices of hiking gear. In this post I’m sharing everything you need to know to plan, prepare, and pack for a hike to help you hit the trail running. Why Hike?

 

Hiking has a number of benefits. It is a great way to improve your:

• Physical health – yes, hiking has been proven to help build your muscle strength and your cardiovascular system. 
• Mental well-being – keeping active helps reduce stress and can help you manage anxiety and depression. Hiking also lets you burn off steam on your own if you’ve had a bad day!

To some, hiking can be as simple as choosing a trail and start hiking. Well, for short hikes of an hour or two that might be ok, but there is a little more to it than that, particularly when the hike is longer and in extreme weather conditions. Let me share my info on how to plan and prepare for a hike and the hiking essentials you should take with you.

 

How to Plan a Hike

 

To ensure your hike goes smoothly, spend a little time preparing for your hike.

 

Choose Your Hike

 

The first thing to do is to choose your hike. Now there are many hikes out there ranging in different lengths, fitness levels and terrains. Only you know what you are capable of, so choose the hike that suits you. No point hiking Mount Fuji, in Japan, if you aren’t fit enough! And what about the length of the hike, do you just want to hike for a few hours, a whole day or longer. Once you have chosen your hike, you can begin to prepare.

 

Things to Consider About Your Chosen Hike

 

Pack the Essentials for Your Hike

 

• Do You Need a Permit for this Hike?

Some hikes may need a permit. Find out if your chosen hike needs one. There is nothing worse than turning up at the starting point only to find out you need a permit to get in!

 

• How Long Will The Hike Take?

While planning your hike, find out details like the length of the hike and how long is suggested it will take. Depending on your own fitness the hike may or may not take longer. You will need to ensure you have the time to undertake the hike so you can appreciate it to its fullest. Hiking is not just about running to the top of the mountain for great views – you need to enjoy what is around you and this may take a little extra time.

 

• Getting To The Trail and Parking

Include in the length of time for the hike the time to get there. How far away is the hike from where you are and will you be walking or driving there or will public transport drop you off at the starting point. Whichever way you choose to get there factor in this time, and the time to get home after the hike. Also consider times you may need to leave to get to the hike, particularly if you want to see a sunrise!

 

Preparing for Your Hike

 

Once you have chosen your hike and worked out the logistics, it is time to prepare yourself and your gear. Take some time, preferably the day before to do the following to prepare for your hike. You don’t want to leave preparations to the last minute because you just might find something has broken and needs repair or you may have run out of batteries! Preparation is key for a great hike.

 

• Familiarise Yourself With Your Trail Map

 

Get to know the trail before you hike it. Either purchase a physical copy or download a copy of the map. Print it off if you want and study it. It will show you many things including the topography so you know where there are elevated areas, descents and challenging climbs. Also if there are any junctions on the trail you need to be aware of so you don’t take a wrong turn. Take note if there are any sources of water or food on or near the trail as this will determine on how much water and food you might need to take.

 

• Water

 

Having enough water can be a critical part of your hike. A general rule is to drink 2 cups or .5 litres per hour per person while hiking. Without enough water you can become dehydrated which can lead to headaches, dizziness and possibly disorientation. You don’t want these things to happen as you won’t enjoy the hike plus you could have an accident. I would suggest you start hydrating yourself the night before you hike – not too much that you need the bathroom all night. I often take two collapsable water bottles with me on my hikes and sometimes a water filter in case I fill up my water bottle in a stream. Both my collapsable water bottle and water filter are super light making them easy to carry in my backpack.

 

• Check the Weather

 

Before you begin to pack your daypack for your hike, check the weather as you may need to cancel the hike or adjust your gear. There’s nothing worse than hiking in adverse conditions, you need to think of your safety!

 

• Share Your Plans With Someone

 

Before you leave on your hike, share your plans with someone. This could be a trusted friend, family member or the receptionist at your accommodation. You could even put it on your social media feed – but don’t forget to let people know when you have returned safely.

 

What to Pack for a Hike

 

This is probably the most important part of your hike as the gear you don’t take can really interfere whether you have a good or bad hike. Here is my suggested packing list of items to pack for a hike and you will need to adjust the items and amounts depending on the length and type of hike you will be doing.

 

• Hiking Day Pack

 

The first thing you need is to have an appropriate hiking day pack. It should be comfortable and fit you well. The last thing you need is an uncomfortable day pack that doesn’t fit you and annoys you all hike. Most daypacks arena the range of 20-30L and have enough room to store everything you will need for the hike. 

 

Items to Pack for Hiking

• Water in water bottles and a water filter
• Snacks (trail mix) and meals
• Sunscreen
• Hat
• Sunglasses
• Lip Balm
• Cell Phone and a solar powered Powerbank (read my post on how to choose the best Powerbank here)
• Map unless you have downloaded one onto your phone
• Torch if you are hiking in the dark – early morning to see a sunrise or late evening after sunset
• Trekking Poles – not for everybody but they can be useful to take the pressure of your joints.
• Toilet kit – if nature calls you will need some toilet paper or wipes stashed in a small plastic, sealable bag – and a small trowel to dig a hole.

 

• Safety Supplies

 

It’s better to be safe than sorry.

• Headlamp if hiking in the dark
• First aid kit – just basic with band aids, antiseptic wipes, tweezers, pain relief, anti-itch cream, cream for inset bites, etc.
• Gear repair kit – duct tape and ties and a pocket knife  will come in handy when making repairs on gear and equipment.
• Waterproof matches or a light

 

• Items to Pack for Overnight or Longer Hikes

 

• Small stove is camping overnight

What to Wear on Your Hike

 

What you wear on your hike will depend on the time of year and weather conditions. Here are my basics that I wear hiking.

 

• Basic Hiking Clothes

 

• Shorts or lightweight hiking pants – TIP: if you will be scrambling over rocks and crawling along on your bottom, the older the clothes the better. I usually wear an old pair of leggings if I know I am doing this!
• Quick drying shirt made of lightweight synthetic fabrics that will keep you cool.
• Warm layer such as a fleece jumper.
• Quick drying/breathable underwear.
• Hiking socks made of merino wool for wicking sweat
• Sturdy Hiking Boots or Shoes.

 

• Extra Hiking Clothes Dependent on Weather and Season

 

• Rain jacket and a rain cover for your backpack.
• Insulated jacket – on very cold days pack an insulated jacket to keep you warm.
• Extra socks in case your pair gets wet. Dry socks will help prevent blisters (ouch) or frostbite if hiking during winter.
• Beanie
• Gloves

 

What to Leave in your Car While You are Hiking

 

When you get back to your car after your hike have some fresh supplies waiting for you. Such as comfy shoes, extra socks, water and food and some wet wipes and a towel. Even a change of clothes.

3 Most Common Hiking Tent Types

 

Tents can be classified into 3 categories: backpacking tents, camping tents, and mountaineering tents. Backpacking tents are the best option if you are hiking mainly because they are light so you can carry them while hiking. Let’s break it down even further to help you choose the right tent.

 

1. FreeStanding Hiking Tents

 

As you can tell by that name – freestanding – these tents can stand independently. There’s absolutely no need to stake them up. These tents can hold their shape on their own. Freestanding tents have a distinctive framework, which you can move around without collapsing. These tents can be set up very easily and within minutes. What’s more, most of these tents have a dual wall and include a separate rainfly for weather protection. 

However, taking them down can be a bit problematic because of their springy frame, which makes things harder. Despite that, freestanding hiking tents are the most popular tent type for beginners. They are easy to set up, easy to use, provide excellent weather protection and overall features. Start with a freestanding camping tent if you are just starting to explore camping and don’t know much about suitable tent types. 

 

2. Pole Camping Tents

 

Pole tents are the opposite of freestanding tents. These tents require a pole for support and proper setup. You have to stake them out with the help of a trekking pole to hold their shape properly. Without a pole, they cannot hold their shape. Therefore, these tents are very much like traditional tents. Generally speaking, these tents have a single wall. That’s why they are super lightweight. 

But the problem with pole tents is that they are not as comfortable as freestanding. These tents are also less spacey in comparison with freestanding tents. Besides, setting them up can also be a problem because you cannot use them on all surfaces. You have to set them up on a flat surface. If you are traveling to a sandy or mountainous region, setting a pole tent in gravel, mud or sand is difficult, if not impossible. 

 

3. Hybrid Camping Tents

 

Hybrid camping tents are semi-freestanding. That means a hybrid tent is the combination of the two types of camping tents described above. These tents come in two parts. The first part features a pole structure to hold them upright, while the other you can stake out making the frame. Hence, hybrid camping tents balance the weather protection and comforts of freestanding tents with pole tents’ lightweight and easy-to-carry aspects. 

But, hybrid tents are more expensive. If you are a first-timer, spending extra cash on a tent may not be possible. Not to mention, hybrid tents are designed specifically for ultralight backpacking. This makes them slightly less durable than other tent types. Finally, if you are traveling into the jungle, setting them up can also be a bit problematic. Not great for beginners – but you won’t be a beginner forever! 

 

How to Choose an Ideal Hiking Tent

 

When shopping for a hiking tent, you should keep a few things in mind.

 

Consider Space and Capacity of your Hiking Tent

 

Hiking tents come in all sizes. You can go for a one-person tent if hiking on your own. Or to a tent that can accommodate up to 5 or more people simultaneously. These tents are ideal for larger families and groups. Two-person tents are most common, though, as they can accommodate two sleeping pads, sufficient for couples. Remember, the bigger a tent gets the heavier its size. Therefore, carrying them can become a problem. So choose the hiking tent that will accommodation the number of people hiking.  

 

What Fabric is Best for your Hiking Tent

 

Hiking tents are mostly made of nylon or polyester material. While polyester is more economical, nylon is much sturdier and stronger. It is also waterproof. But the problem with nylon is that it can sag and expand if you expose it to a lot of water. Therefore, if you are hiking in a humid region, a polyester-made tent will be more suitable for your excursion. On the other hand, if you are not expecting much rain, consider going with a Nylon tent instead. 

Many manufacturers add a layer of silicone or polyurethane over their tents. Polyurethane is a heavier material that makes the tent slightly heavier. It can also weaken the fabric resulting in easy tears. Not to forget, polyurethane hydrolyzes over time. This means if you expose a polyurethane-layered tent to rain a lot, it will start spreading an unpleasant odour after some time. In contrast, silicone doesn’t tear or hydrolyze easily. 

 

Does your Hiking Tent offer Seasonality

 

Currently, the market offers 3 or 4 season tents. The three-season tents are ideal for occasional hikers who prefer hiking during mild weather conditions. These tents feature dual-walled construction, mesh panels for ventilation, and a separate rainfly to keep the users dry during the rainy days. On the other hand, four-season tents are ideal for professional hikers. These tents can withstand the harshest weather conditions anywhere in the world. Made of sturdy poles and heavier fabrics, these tents can keep you warm and fuzzy during freezing cold nights.

 

Other Features of Hiking Tents to Consider

 

Other features worth considering when purchasing a tent for hiking are: 

• Doors (One or Two). Tents will have either one or two doors. If it has one it will be oriented at the front or side of the tent. If it has two doors they will be oriented on the sides. 
• Proper Ventilation System.
• Footprint. These are usually sold separately and is a piece of waterproof fabric that is cut out to the same dimensions of the tent’s floor. They help to increase the lifespan of your tent by protecting it from sharp objects on the ground. Some people use groundsheets instead. These also help to avoid water seeping from the ground into the bottom of the tent.
• Bathtub floor. If the material of the tent floor extends up the wall, it’s got a bathtub floor. These help to protect you from rain and wind getting into your tent during storms.
• Vestibules. A tent’s vestibule is the area just outside a tent’s door that is covered. Vestibules are great for keeping muddy shoes dry and for cooking in bad weather.

• Tent camping is cheaper than some other holiday accommodation. On saying that, the set up costs of equipment can initially cost a lot, but in the long run your camping equipment can be used over and over again reducing the cost of your camping trip.
• Camping also allows you to get up close to some incredible nature. Yep, you can set yourself up beside a river or ocean, in a bush or forest setting, on a piece of land by a natural landmark or even in someone’s backyard in a major city. I suggest the biggest factors influencing you when to go are the weather, the seasons and school and public holidays. So pick your season. Do you prefer warmer or colder weather. You can’t always pick the perfect weather so check ahead and change your plans if the weather is too uncertain.

Many tents and sleeping bags are made to suit many conditions which is why people say ‘any time is a good time to go camping’. So let’s hope that tent you purchased is waterproof! As well as the weather you may want to consider the time of year you will be camping. Do you mind camping with loads of other campers during school and public holidays. If you don’t mind, great, but if you do, then you may want to reconsider the time of year or go during off-peak times.

 

Choosing Your Campsite

Once you have decided you are going camping you need to decide where you want to pitch your tent. So how do you choose a campsite? Consider the following:

• Who are you camping with? Just yourself, a friend or your family?
• Do you want to be remote or with other campers?
• Does the campsite need to be dog-friendly?
• Do you require entertainment on site such as jumping castles, a pool and an entertainment zone for the kids?
• How are you cooking? Will you be needing access to a BBQ? A fire pit? Or are you bringing your own cooking equipment.
• Would you like a shop on site so you can purchase additional food, the local paper or a litre of milk?
• What about toilets and showers? Are you happy to dig a hole in the dirt and not shower for your entire stay? Or will you be needing a dump point?
• And the biggest decision is the location. What things do you want to be near – the water, in walking distance to restaurants for dinner, in the mountains, etc.

 

How to Find and Book Your Campsite

 

When you know the type of camping area you want to stay in, you need to find one to actually stay at. All these decisions can make you feel overwhelmed when planning your camping trip. If you have been camping a long time you may have special spots you like to go to. If not, there are a number of ways to help you find a campsite.

• The first way to find a camp site is by winging it. You can look for signposts along the road pointing you in the direction of a camping ground.
• You could book a camping spot well in advance with specific camping grounds via their website.
• Use camping apps and Facebook Groups. One app I have found very useful is WikiCamps which provides camping information for a number of countries: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States. So if in need of a dump site or a camp ground check this app out.
• Asking locals of the last town you drove through can also prove fruitful as locals often know the best places to set up camp, as do other campers.
• And don’t forget many national parks allow you to camp for a fee and there are also many free camping spots you could consider – you just need to find them.

 

What to take Camping – Essential and Not So Essential Equipment

Packing for a camping is different to packing for a two week trip in a hotel resort. When else do you take your own bed and the kitchen sink! Over my years of camping I have worked out some essentials and not so essentials to take with me. Now these are just my suggestions, as you begin your camping adventures you will discover your own essential and not-so essential equipment to take.

 

Tent

 

First item on this list of essential and not so essential items to take camping is a tent. There are different types of tents available from swags, 1-2 person tents and 2-6 person tents. Also cold weather tents for camping in the snow. So what type of camping will you be doing and how many people are camping? Add to this pegs and a mallet for banging the pegs in the ground. Once you’ve chosen your tent, you will need to choose your bedding.

What you will be eating and how you cook your food will be dependent on your food tastes and what cooking equipment you will have available to you while camping. If your camp site will have BBQ facilities you may utilise this to have plenty of BBQ meals. If you will be relying on your little camp stove, then your meals may be one pot wonders and good fry ups.

My best advice for food while camping is to do some pre-planning. Think about the meals you will be having while camping and take food to cover these meals. So start with packing a box of basic staples and condiments like cooking oil, salt, pepper, tea, coffee, sugar, sauce and whatever you like to have on hand. Then you need to think about meals. How long are you camping for? Take enough food, bread, milk, butter, meat, salads and other ingredients required to make your chosen meals. You could freeze a number of these foods which will keep them fresher longer and also help to keep other foods cool in your esky.

Don’t forget that you’ll need a container for your water. It needs to be big enough to hold all your water but small enough to pour from. Many campsites have drinking water available, so check before you go as to what your chosen camp site has.

There are many camping stoves on the market that will suit the type of camping you will be doing. There are single burners, 2 burners and ovens which are fueled by propane or gas. Then you can cook over an open fire and will need a camp or dutch oven plus utensils to help you cook over the flames like a grill. Check these camping stoves out.

Clothing

 

What you will wear during your camping trip will be dependent on the weather at the time and the location you will be camping in. If you are camping by a beach during summer months you will be wearing lighter clothes than if you decide to go camping in the middle of winter where your thermal underwear will come in handy.

Layering your clothes is a really great way to deal with temperature changes. I suggest thermals or a t-shirt, an overshirt, a jumper or fleece, then a waterproof jacket. Top this off with a hat or a beanie. And don’t forget your feet. A good pair of walking shoes or appropriate shoes, like a pair of thongs if you are camping by the beach will come in handy for your trip.

Two items I always take camping are a good pair of walking shoes and a waterproof jacket. They come in handy whether I am hiking or having a relaxing time somewhere in the woods or by a lake or ocean.

 

Tent Camping Tips and Hacks

 

Everyone has camping tips and hacks, here are some of mine learnt over the many years I have been camping.

 

1. Set up your camp site: When you have arrived at your chosen campsite the first thing to do is set up your site. Start with your tent first. A good site for your tent should be flat, free of vegetation and rocks, be buffered from the wind and have good drainage. I usually take a tarp and lay this on the ground before putting my tent on top of it. It just acts as extra protection against the ground. When the tent is up I put my things inside. Then set up the cooking equipment. Some campsites have on-site grills and picnic tables to use. If this isn’t the case, you will need to find a safe area for your gas stove or to build a campfire.
2. Store your food correctly to avoid animals invading your camp and stealing and eating your food. I suggestion packing your dry food in a sturdy box with a closed lid. While keeping all perishables in a sturdy ice chest.
3. Don’t feed the local wildlife as they can become dependent on humans feeding them. If they do, they can become aggressive if new campers arrive and won’t feed them.
4. Ensure you think about your safety. Bush fires are all too common in Australia so avoid the bush when advised to do so. A fire rating system is in place for safety.
5. Always have enough drinking water. Use a re-fillable water bottle and always fill your water bottle with drinkable water.
6. Endeavour to leave your campsite as clean or cleaner than you found it. The next campers will appreciate this. It is also your responsibility to leave as small a footprint as possible so future travellers and generations can enjoy what you are enjoying.
7. Place a floor covering (rug, mat) at the door on the outside and another on the inside so if your feet happen to be wet, sandy or muddy you can wipe them on the outside floor covering and anything left will be caught on the inside floor covering. This reduces the amount of grass, sand, mud, pine needs and other things being brought into your tent.
8. Hang a light from the top of your tent, if possible, so you can see at night. It also makes getting ready for bed much easier.
9. Know what camping cooking equipment is available to you and adjust your meals to what you can cook.
10. I work out how many days I might be camping for and plan my meals. I often prepare some of it in advance. For instance, I might make a pasta sauce and pasta, freeze it and bring it in my ice chest or Esky. Then I can simply put it in a pot and heat it and serve. I also make a couple of easy salads to bring such as coleslaw, pesto pasta or a green leaf salad. I keep them in Tupperware to keep them fresh.
11. Prep salad, carrots, cucumber, capsicum (peppers), etc and put them into food storage containers. Then get them out when needed.
12. Pack a baking tray or extra plate so it can be used to pile high those just cooked sausages, steak, kebabs, etc.in the middle of your table.
13. Have hearty food that will fill you up and keep your backpack light. Like trail mix rather than lollies and porridge rather than corn flakes.
14. Take a roll of Toilet Paper.
15. Have a rainy day plan such as having things to do in the tent like board games, cards, small electronics and books to read. And this could be a great opportunity to tell those scary stories!

There you have it. My beginners guide to tent camping. As I originally said, spending a few days or longer in the great outdoors can be a wonderful adventure, or it can be a living nightmare. Often a good or bad camping experience comes down to not having any knowledge of what to expect. Camping is a pattern interruption. It helps you break the family routine and create bonding moments together. No more nagging to get the kids to do their homework or help with the house chores. These are the moments where children would want to do the camp chores voluntarily. It opens the door on spontaneity for your kids to learn how to be independant and at the same time learn to work as a team. Ken and Jules from Outdoormagnet, a couple from Asia will share with you some tips on how to plan for a successful family camping trip, of which they practice with their kids too.

 

Research Your Family Camping Trip

 

As you are completely vulnerable to the element outdoors, research in advance can prepare you for the worst. Check the calendar to see if the weather is right for camping, as winter may be too cold for the young ones. Choosing a right place to camp also depends on how far you can drive and whether the campgrounds are affordable to you. If you are with novice campers, consider camping on established campsites. They are better equipped with toilets and showers for a more comfortable stay. Depending on your budget, some campsites offer additional facilities such as playgrounds, swimming pools, restaurants. Reserve your campsite in advance. Or you may just want to save some money and look for free places to camp.

 

Activities You Might Do While Camping With Your Family

 

As you are travelling in a group, be realistic and consider the needs of your camping crowd. Ask yourself, what exactly do you want to do? Your kids may like to spend the day hiking or just swimming by the beach. Your partner may prefer spending the day exploring the local town nearby. For the adventurous ones, camping in the wild may be their ideal camping activity. Look for a campsite that has easy access to your favorite outdoor activities. If you are planning to bring your dog, check if the campgrounds allow it. You will have fewer headaches if you know these essential details.

 

Undertake A Dry Run Of Your Camping Trip

 

Prepare or be surprised by it. Test out your gear by doing a dry run at home. You will not want to be drenched with rain due to a torn tent or missing poles. Test your gear to ensure they work properly. Write down your gear list to include essentials like First-Aid-Kid, Camping Stove, Flashlights, Tarp, Camping mattresses and Tent. Check out this list

Consider what type of tent you need for your camping group. For a small family, a 4 person tent may be sufficient. For a larger family, you may need a 12 person tent. 

Ensure your tent is seam sealed to prevent the water from getting in. Try camping in controlled settings like your backyard. Start with small steps by letting the kids sleep in the tent. It can be a frightening experience for the little ones if they have not tried camping before. Teach them about the sounds of the night. Get them comfortable sleeping on the ground with their sleeping mats and bags. They will be excited for the real experience.

 

Pack The Right Things

 

It is definitely faster for a parent to pack everything. But this time, let the kids do some of their own packing, instead of doing everything for them. Give them a basic packing list. They might overpack, but it gives them an opportunity to make their own decisions on the clothes to wear or select their favorite toy to bring. You wouldn’t want to end up with a crying kid at night, looking for their ‘smelly’ blanket. You will want to double check their bags, to ensure they have proper clothings and shoes. Bring extra layers of clothings, as you can add on more layers if it is cold. Socks and hats are essential to keep yourself warm.

Remember to bring your essentials like toothbrushes, water bottles, napkins. Your checklist should include your cooking gear such as pots and pans, barbeque sticks, eating utensils and can opener too.

 

Play On Your Camping Trip

 

The more the kids get involved in the trip planning, the more they will enjoy it. Take them away from the screens as this is the time to totally disconnect and have each others’ full attention. But try not to overplan for every single activity and be flexible.  Know that even the best laid plans can go wrong, so learn to relax and just have fun with the kids. Let them decide activities they want to experience like cycling, flying a kite or fishing. Allow time for unstructured play or just to unwind. Maybe they just want to chase fireflies at night or just into a cool lake on a hot day. At night, bring a star map and a telescope to gaze at the stars.

 

Discuss Everyone’s Duties

 

Encourage them to help out in setting up the tent. Assign duties to each of the family members that would be fun and easy, to make them feel that they are an important part of the adventure. Structure responsibilities so that some will clean up, some will gather firewood, some will collect water. 

 

Plan Your Meals For Your Camping Trip

Arrange your meals ahead and plan to eat well. A hungry man is an angry man. Bring snacks that your kids will enjoy on the road trip.  You can prepare ahead your main meals with meat marinades, chopped vegetables or pre-made pancake batter. Pack the ingredients into zip lock bags or separate containers. Involve the kids in the cooking process, and they will learn some basic cooking at the same time. Keep it simple, so that there is minimal cleanup. Bring a mix of perishable and non-perishable food.

Most importantly, make sure the family stays hydrated all the time. Check if there is water available at the campsite or whether you need to prepare your own. On the safe side, you can prepare a minimum of eight gallons of water for a 3 days trip for a family of four. 

Always lock up your food at night, as you don’t to be surprised by a mountain of ants on your food or a surprise visit from the bear.

 

Consider Safety Issues You Might Encounter On Your Camping Trip

 

Lay down the safety rules like not going to the lakes and rivers supervised. And to take extra precautions when near a fire like not burning a fire inside the tent. Let them wear a whistle around their neck in case they get lost in the woods. But also teach them not to whistle unnecessarily as it may annoy other campers. Make sure everyone has their own headlamp so they can see well at night. Teach them how to spot poison ivy, and not to eat anything they find in the woods, as they can make them sick. Also keep in mind not to touch or feed any animals. Explain to them how to respond if they meet someone strange or a dangerous animal. 

For the younger ones, after morning activities like a hike, you may get wining kids moaning a bucketful. Recognize their daily routine that they may need an afternoon nap after their morning exercise. So plan for that.

 

Keep a Positive Attitude During Your Camping Trip

 

Remember, you are not in office, not running a race or completing a project. Leave your city life behind. Best laid plans can go wrong, like unexpected rain for an entire day or your campfire would not start. Some of the situations are beyond your control and some may be your own mistakes. Stay optimistic, and find alternatives. Your family will pick up your energy and it will still be a fun trip. 

With the right preparation, research and planning, you can take a lot of the hard work out of hiking, camping, and backpacking. This means you can have more time to enjoy the your surroundings, experience and the company of your friends. Enjoy Camping!

When travelling you usually set yourself a budget. One of the fastest ways to burn through that travel budget is by eating your meals out all the time. Yes, it is great to try the local cuisines for breakfast, lunch and dinner but, it isn’t always good for your bank balance or your health. This is why I am a firm believer in cooking while travelling. Don’t get me wrong, not all of the time, but a lot of the time.

The main reasons to cook while you travel is to:

• save money on meals. Saving money on cooking your own meals can lead to you having more money to do more things on your holiday or to extend it.
• eating out all the time can effect your health. Yep, eating rich or fried foods can lead to digestive issues and maybe weight gain.
• eat healthier by controlling the ingredients used in meals, particularly if you have dietary needs like being a vegetarian or vegan or allergies.
• have more flexibility with your food choices.
• use local ingredients to make your ‘favourite dishes’ or learn to make local dishes. Fancy learning to make sushi in Japan or perhaps pasta dishes in Italy.
• have flexibility to cook whenever and whatever you want.

10 Top Tips Why to Cook While You Travel

1. Stay in Accommodation that Has a Kitchen

 

My first tip for If you want to cook to save money while travelling is to stay in accommodation that has cooking facilities. Before you go and book your accommodation check firstly if there are kitchen facilities available. Because you cannot cook without a kitchen. Having access to a kitchen, even if it is only basic will help save you money.

Many types of accommodation ranging from campervans, caravans, apartments, houses to hostels all have cooking facilities available. Knowing your accommodation has kitchen facilities available, even if you don’t always use them, gives you the flexibility to decide whether or not you will cook your meals to save blowing out your budget. You don’t need a full kitchen either to cook great meals while backpacking and travelling. Cooking in a hotel room is very doable as most will have a toaster, kettle and fridge. Some may have a stove and a microwave.

2. Ask a new found Room-mate to Share a Cooked Meal

 

If you decide to stay in a hostel but are worried or embarrassed about cooking a meal on your own, then why not ask your new room-mate/s to share a cooked meal. Shopping and cooking together is a great way to form new friendships, even if they are just for one night. It can also save you money because you will share the costs of the ingredients. There is no harm asking other hostellers, all they can say is no!

 

3. Find out what Cooking Utensils You have Available to You

 

Before heading to the grocery store, check out your kitchen and what cooking utensils you’ve got to work with. Keep a mental note of the appliances and utensils you have access to. Do you have an oven, cooktop, camp fire or microwave? Are there pots and pans? What about a chopping board and sharp knife? Are there plates, bowls and cutlery to use? Once you know what cooking utensils are available to you can decide on a meal and how to cook it.

Some accommodation also supply you with the bare minimum of ingredients such as salt, pepper and oil, or these may have been left behind by other travellers. By checking the place out first, it saves you from having to make another trip to the grocery store.

 

4. Plan Your Meals and Buy the Basics

 

Thinking about what you would like to cook, planning your meals and buying the basics will help you save money while travelling. When you know how long you are staying in each place you can work out how many, and which meals you will cook. If you are just staying one night you might want to enjoy a meal out but if staying longer in the one place then I suggest you cook. Work out how many breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks you will need? If needing some inspiration, check out some suggested easy to make meals I suggest further on in this post.

You don’t necessarily want to be carrying around large amounts of food with you as you travel. It will be wise to locate where your nearest supermarket or market is as soon as possible. By shopping in the local markets and supermarkets you may find yourself eating some of the freshest seasonal local ingredients around. Foreign grocery stores and markets can be confusing places but can also be fascinating and provide you with interesting tales to tell, plus great food to cook! I suggest you have a translation app on your phone in case you need to ask for help!

Once you’ve decided on some meals, make a list of the ingredients you will need. Write it on a piece of paper or on your phone. Either way, having a list will make shopping a whole lot easier. There is nothing worse than wandering around a supermarket aimlessly looking at the different aisles and then having to go back because you’ve had some inspiration. 

If you are travelling with kids, planning meals in advance and even having some of them pre-made means you won’t be stuck thinking about and cooking food. You will be able to enjoy your holiday too.

 

5. Buy the Right Amount

 

Armed with your shopping list, keep in mind how long you are staying in this one location. And also, how many people you are catering for. If you are only staying a couple of nights you won’t need to buy large items, like a bottle of oil. If you are staying at least a week you could. Remember, you may need to throw it away at the end of your stay, unless you can carry it to your next destination or leave it for the next traveller! But think of alternatives as well, what I mean is, instead of cooking in oil, shallow fry in a little butter! Butter you may have brought with you or bought at the supermarket to make sandwiches with or put on your toast!

 

6. Keep Meals Simple

 

Making meals while travelling can be difficult, particularly making meals with loads of ingredients. I find it best to stick with simple meals that only require a few ingredients. There are plenty of easy recipes, that require few ingredients and limited utensils to make and are tasty and nutritious. Here are some of my suggested easy to make meals.

 

My easy peasy Spaghetti Bolognaise is one of my favourite meals to make while working abroad and travelling the world.

 

One trick to cooking while travelling is to stick with easy-to-make meals that don’t require a lot of ingredients and utensils to make. Two of my favourite meals are Spaghetti Bolognaise and Curry Sausage Risotto. And I particularly like to make my own breakfast. I suggest you think about your favourite meals, the ones you know you can cook. Then consider how you can cook them with limited utensils and ingredients. My suggestions for easy meals include omelet’s, stir fries, noodles, rice and pasta dishes. I also throw together some mean salads from the fresh supplies from the local markets. The top 5 most eaten foods in the world are:

• Pasta
• Rice
• Pizza
• Chicken
• Eggs

 

7. Travel With Some Ingredients You Use Regularly

 

One thing you can do is travel with easy to prepare dried foods like rice, noodles and pasta. Then all you need is some hot water and bit of flavouring and voila!. They may not be the most nutritious meals around but will be a lot cheaper than going out for a meal, particularly if you are on a tight budget.

When I can, I collect dry ingredients such as salt, pepper and sugar sachets. They can be extremely useful to add to ingredients to add flavour. Some food I often travel with is pasta, noodles and rice. They are easy to cook as I can usually find some hot water and some flavouring to add to them. Add some salad or veggies and voila, a nutritious and cheap meal.

Everyone’s list will be different, that being said, things on my list I consider a necessity in every kitchen. Here’s a rough list of basic items I always buy at the beginning of my trip, and travel with.

 

• Salt & Pepper (I do prefer black, but whichever you like)
• Favourite spices and herbs (mixed herbs, curry). I carry them in this great spice jar set which is the perfect size for travelling. I can take 6 different spices with me.
• Oil (I prefer olive oil)
• Vinegar (balsamic – great for salads)
• Sweetener (sugar, honey)
• Garlic 
• Tea and coffee

 

8. Travel With Cooking Utensils

 

If you have the room in your luggage I would suggest you travel with some basic cooking utensils. Why? Because you just don’t know what will be available in the place you will be unless you have done loads of research. To be honest, in some places you will be lucky to have a sharp knife or a kettle. Some of my favourite cooking essentials I travel with are (but not limited to as I adjust them to what travel I will be doing and where I am going.

For instance a camping holiday will be different to staying in a 5 star unit with a full kitchen. Maintaining sustainability and eco-friendliness is a concern for me while on the road. I do everything I can to lessen my greenhouse gas footprint, and one of those things is to reuse cooking products. I travel with:

• Spork and travel cutlery set
• Collapsable bowl
• Silicone tongs
• Tupperware, Reusable lunch bags and food wrap
• Coffee maker – I take my Wacaco Espresso Maker on all my travels.
• Rice cooker – my 2 cup Rice cooker is perfect to make rice dishes for one.
• Small stove and frypan
• Kettle
• Can opener and bottle opener and corkscrew
• Mini grater and vegetable peeler

9. What to do with Leftovers

 

I often find leftovers taste even better the next day – particularly pizza for breakfast! Having leftovers from your meal can be a problem however, hopefully the leftovers can be eaten the next day, like pizza, or will be able to travel with you.

Think about the food before you cook it. If you are making an egg dish and won’t be using all the eggs, maybe consider boiling the leftover eggs and taking them to eat as a hard boiled egg the next day! Travelling with some collapsable Tupperware or sealable lunch bags will be a great idea and come in very handy here. Or you if you have leftovers can you turn them into other recipes. It is easy to be creative and frugal when you have to be!

 

10. Don’t Cook Every Meal – Eat Like the Locals

 

What’s this you say? This post is about cooking while travelling and then you say, don’t cook every meal! That’s right cooking while travelling can be time consuming. You need to see what cooking utensils you have, shop for ingredients, then cook it. Yes, it saves you money, but it is also great to immerse yourself in the local culture and enjoy the cuisines. From these local cuisines, you can get inspiration to cook some ‘world faves’ as you travel or when at home. I would suggest make your own breakfast, lunch for the day, then cook or go out for dinner.

When you go out, you know the saying – when in Rome, do as the Romans do. So eat like the locals do. There are plenty of cheap places to eat while travelling. Don’t get into the mindset that eating out is bad – because its not, it can just be expensive. Street food stalls offer tasty morsels and is usually cheap. Maybe do a cooking class in the country you are in to learn to cook a local dish – plus get to eat it. I have found some great cooking classes through GetYourGuide. Simply search for a cooking class in the city you are in. There are some great classes in Europe and Asia. Don’t be deterred from experiencing the food culture of where you are by saving a few dollars by cooking!
