There is quite a hefty fee associated with applying for the visa, being USD2,000 for individuals. And if you want to bring your family it is $3,000 per family to apply. So if you are a digital nomad family, this could be a good option. If you successfully get this visa you can stay for up to 12 months enjoying island life. And not have to pay tax on any income you earn. Sounds pretty good, don’t you think?

 

Bermuda

 

The Bermuda digital nomad visa has one of the lowest visa application fees in the Caribbean Islands with remote work visa programs and digital nomad visas – at only $263. Add there is no income restrictions to apply for the visa, yep, i like that! The Bermuda digital nomad visa can be very appealing for those seeking the Caribbean beach life. If you successfully get this visa you can stay for up to 12 months. And not have to pay tax on any income you earn. That will make enjoying Caribbean beaches, food and lifestyle even better!

 

Costa Rica

 

Costa Rica is an attractive digital nomad visa destination. This is mostly due to its low cost of living, fast internet speeds and not having to pay any taxes for 12 months on your income if you earn it from a company outside of the country. To get the visa though there are income requirements. You must be earning at least $3,000 per month consistently to qualify for the visa. But with it, you can live and work abroad in an incredible country in South America. What a great base to explore this part of the world.

 

Croatia

 

Croatia is very appealing to digital nomads due to its low cost of living, fast internet and proximity to its European neighbours. Becoming part of the Schengen Zone in 2023 makes travel to European neighbours a great option. Weekend in Paris anyone!

For the above reasons, Croatia is a popular digital nomad destination. To get the visa though there is an income requirement of $2,500 per month or prove you have $31,000 in savings. The digital nomad visa will let you stay for up to 12 months without having to pay any taxes if you earn income from a non-Croatian company.

 

Georgia

 

Last on my list of visas for digital nomads with 0% tax is Georgia. Georgia, in particular Tbilisi is proving to be a digital nomad hotspot due to the low cost of living, fast internet and proximity to travel throughout Europe.

To qualify you will need to be making at least $2000 per month or show you have $24,000 in your bank account.

Let’s just qualify the zero tax. You pay zero tax for the first 180 days on any income earned. After that, the top tax rate is 20% but if you receive the ’Small Business Status’ you will only pay 1% tax if you earn less than $184,000 per year. Confused? It can be so understand what is involved before you apply for the visa.

When you go into high school, you are given a taste of a number of languages and then you can choose one to progress with throughout your schooling – if you so wish. I decided I would learn French, and this stood me in good stead as I visited France and was able to say hello, order food and pay for it without much trouble.

When I moved to the UK to live and work, I found myself visiting many European countries from my London base. I discovered that it is good to know a little of the language of the country I am visiting as it helps with immersion. Locals are more likely to spend time chatting to you if you have tried to speak to them in their own language. I found it much easier to learn a language when you’re abroad speaking it. It is definitely an advantage to learning the language of the country you have chosen to live in. It just helps you to settle into your new life living abroad if you make the effort.

 

4. Try Different Foods

 

One of the best pros of moving and living abroad is trying new foods – I just love the Paella I discovered in Spain

 

I think this is my favourite thing about living abroad – trying new and different foods. When I lived in the UK, I made it my mission to eat all of the local British food. Afternoon tea at the Ritz anyone! And when I went to Europe I tried all the local foods too. Snitzel in Austria, chips with mayo in Belgium, Bouillabaisse and pastries in France, pasta in Italy – shall I go on? Discovering the food of your adopted country is one of the best things about living abroad. And don’t go out to eat it all the time, why not take a local cooking class like I did.

 

5. Meet New People & Make Lifelong Friends

 

When I moved abroad I was hoping and expecting to meet lots of new people, but one of the things I least expected was to make lifelong friends. And one of those friends has become a life partner.

When you live abroad you will meet lots of different people. There will be work colleagues, house mates, travel partners and those you meet when totally not expecting it! Some will be short-term friends while others will become lifelong friends and partners. Some of the people that I met living abroad have become some of my closest friends. We don’t all live in the same city or country, but we keep in contact. Thank goodness for phones, email and social media making it easier to keep in touch.

 

6. Get Work Doing Something You’ve Never Done Before

 

If you aren’t being transferred overseas for work or moving from country to country as a digital nomad working remotely online, then you will most likely pick up work. Moving abroad can be one of the best ways to expand your opportunities that will look good on your CV.

When I moved abroad to live and work in the UK, I registered with a recruitment agency to do administration work. In no time I was being sent to different companies on a temporary basis. I mostly did PA (Personal Assistant) work, typing and data entry as I have a typing speed of around 80wpm. Then I thought I’d try something new and got a live-in job in a pub just outside of London where I worked for a summer. And then I took a live-in job as a nanny which took care of a job and a place to live all in the one hit! The skills I developed from doing these jobs has helped me to never be out of employment. This has definitely outweighed any cons of moving abroad for me.

7. Travel Opportunities

 

One of the best things of living abroad is the travel opportunities. Sure you may be studying or working but there will always be time to travel. When I worked in London, I had a weekend here, then a weekend there and then a few holidays here and there. I loved it being in a different city almost every weekend – discovering a new culture, meeting new people and enjoying the food!

 

8. Make Unforgettable Memories

 

Moving abroad leads to some of the best memories you’ll ever have. Even on a day to day basis while living in a foreign country you will make unforgettable memories. It is the little things that you often remember the most. How you conquered ordering food, navigated the tube in London in peak hour on your way to work or conquered customs of covering your head when entering mosques. There is something that you will remember from every day when living abroad in a foreign country.

 

9. Personal Growth

 

Personal growth is a huge pro of living abroad. Taking yourself out of your comfort zone and putting yourself in a new environment sees you grow as a person. You will constantly be facing challenges. Challenges you will confront and figure out and all these challenges can make you more independent and confident.

As a solo traveller who has moved abroad to live work and play somewhere in the world alone you only have yourself to rely on. When facing life abroad alone you have two choices. To grow as a person as you meet challenges or go home with your tail between your legs because it was ‘too hard’. Personal growth is good and will help you in the future. I credit moving abroad as being one of the best things I have ever done and the personal growth I acquired is still with me today.

 

10. Gain Skills for the Future

 

Moving abroad to live and work will help you to develop and gain skills for the future. You will try new things such as work, providing you with skills. You will meet new people helping you to develop social skills. These can help you in the future to navigate life.

 

11. Get New Travel Opportunities

Having grown up at a beach, I was use to spending all my time in coastal areas enjoying the water. It wasn’t until I moved abroad that I was introduced to other types of activities during my travels. As well as visiting many places by different types of transport I discovered many activities – hiking for one. Moving abroad to another country allows you to have many travel experiences.

 

12. Start Afresh

 

There’s something to be said for starting afresh by moving abroad. You may have had a relationship breakdown, been sacked from you job, having a mid-life crisis – whatever is happening in your life, you can ‘run away’ to start afresh in another country. I have found travel and discovering new cultures abroad is a great way to help get over the past and move on – very liberating!

 

13. Discover Your Passions

 

I wouldn’t have become a travel writer / blogger full time without living abroad. You may have read in the ‘about me’ section on my website that I fell into travel writing. It was after a visit to Gallipoli, Turkey for ANZAC Day that a magazine in London was calling for travel articles. So I wrote about my trip to Turkey, it was published, and I was paid 25 pounds. I was hooked and so began my passion for travel writing and now travel blogging.

Living abroad also ignited passions for spicy flavoured foods and history – yeah I’ve become a history freak and love visiting old buildings that have lots of stories to tell! And you can find your passions to.

 

14. Freedom

 

Last on my list of pros to moving abroad is freedom. Freedom from the shackles of home and the freedom to do what you want, when you want. And the freedom to be yourself without judgement.

 

Cons of Living Abroad

 

As with everything in life, and moving abroad is no exception, there are disadvantages.

 

1. Lots of Paperwork

 

Yep, before you can start your life abroad there is plenty of paperwork. You need a passport, visa/s, transport bought, accommodation booked and travel insurance and travel gear to purchase. All this can be time consuming and laborious. It could take months to get these things sorted! And there is a cost involved. It costs to get a passport, a visa and to buy transport and accommodation plus the travel gear you will take. This can add up and cost a lot.

And when you get there, there is more paperwork. You need to register your existence, open a bank account, apply for a tax number if you are going to work and find a place to live. The bureaucracy of moving abroad is one disadvantage. And each time you move to a new country, you will have to go through it again – talk about groundhog day!

 

2. Packing up Sucks

 

Packing up is definitely a con of moving abroad. The worst part I find is making the decisions as to what to take and what to leave behind. It is also extremely time consuming and can be expensive buying stuff to take with you.

 

3. Culture Shock

 

Culture shock can be a big issue when you move abroad. Nothing can prepare you for the actual experience where nothing is the same as what you are use to. Culture shock is definitely a major con of living abroad. Even moving to a country that speaks the same language as you do, things will be done differently. Culture shock is a learning curve that throws a curve ball at even the most experienced of expats.

 

4. Language Barriers

 

Different languages can be a challenge when you move abroad. It is particularly a challenge if you move to a country that doesn’t speak your native tongue. You can have trouble settling in because you don’t understand what is being said to you. Finding a place to live and getting a job may prove difficult. This is why it is good to know some of the language of the country you are moving abroad to.

 

5. Moving is Expensive

 

Moving anywhere can be expensive, but add moving abroad costs – passport, visa fees, transport costs, medical tests and short-term accommodation while you find a longer term place to live.

Choosing to move abroad isn’t always cheap which is why this is a big consideration for some and often seen as a con to moving abroad. But if you want a new lifestyle living overseas and plan to get a job or continue working online as a digital nomad this cost is just part of the moving abroad process. I have moved to a number of countries and have never looked at the costs involved as a negative. I see them as just part of moving abroad. On saying that, it is a decision you need to make.

 

6. Homesickness

One of the biggest cons of living abroad is dealing with homesickness and even the most hardy of traveller at some times, feels homesick. The biggest times I felt homesick was at Christmas time, when it was birthdays and when my first nephew was born. I felt really bad for not being home for these special occasions. But you cannot not live your dreams of moving and living abroad for one or two days of a year! And if it gets to you too much – just go home.

 

7. Loneliness

 

Loneliness seems to be a real fear of many people. And yes, it is lonely moving abroad by yourself – but you can be by yourself and not be lonely. There were times when I lived abroad I felt loneliness. Other travellers I had met moved on and I had to start meeting other people again. When I felt lonely, I didn’t sit at home thinking to myself ‘I am so lonely’, I took myself out and did things. I wondered through museums, went to the zoo, went on a walking tour, took a cooking lesson – so I worked on not being lonely.

 

8. Finding Work can be Hard

 

One of the hardest things about moving abroad is giving up the security of your job, unless you are taking your job with you. There is the worry you will not find work abroad. And yes, it can be hard finding work as the work you can do is often defined by the visa you are on. If it is a working holiday visa, you may only be allowed to do typical ‘backpacker jobs’. If you are being sponsored, the work permit will only cover the job you are being sponsored to do. While if moving abroad on a digital nomad visa, you will have to continue working online generating income. Hopefully, you will have enough savings to support yourself until you find work. This is why I like finding a ‘live in job’ like being a nanny, working in a British pub or working in a caravan park as you not only get a job, but accommodation too!

 

9. Tax Implications

 

On the topic of work, when you work in another country there can be tax implications. You will need to find out whether you have to pay tax in the country you are working. Also whether you have to advise the tax office in your home country if you are receiving money in a different country. All this can be a big challenge and definitely a con when you move abroad. I recommend getting a tax accountant who understands the tax implications for people who work abroad. But there are countries where you pay zero tax if living and working on a digital nomad visa.

 

10. Where Will You Live

 

Having nowhere to live when you arrive in a new country can be quite traumatic and definitely is a con of moving abroad. However, there are plenty of places to live from short-term accommodation in hostels and hotels to longer-term accommodation in AirB&Bs to house sitting. It can just take time to find something suitable to suit your needs and that is within your budget. You need to know what type of accommodation you want.

 

11. Adapting to new rules and a new life

 

Last on my list of pros and cons of moving abroad is the final disadvantage of adapting to new rules and a new life. Every country has rules and regulations you will need to adapt to. Expats are often unsure of what to expect from their new country, soo it is a good idea to read up on the country you are moving to beforehand so you don’t do too many faux pars. My best advice is to embrace your new life abroad, learn everything you can, speak to the locals, learn to laugh at your mistakes and be respectful while you learn the new rules in your new life abroad.

 

Should You Move Abroad?

 

In my opinion, yes, you should move abroad. I believe everyone should live and work abroad at least once in their lifetime. The advantages far outweigh the disadvantages of moving abroad. I blog about travel and the lifestyle travel affords me. Do you have a passion? Then why not start a blog and get blogging. 

Bloggers can make a full-time income from their blog through ads on their site, affiliate marketing of products and selling digital products and courses they create. And what is a full-time income? Well this will vary per blogger, but in my case I make a few thousand per month and this affords me the remote work lifestyle I like.

 

2. Freelance Writer

 

Being a freelance writer is one of the ultimate introvert careers. If you love writing, then as a freelance writer you can be writing for other people. Freelancing offers a lot of flexibility and allows introverts to work from anywhere – from home, from a van or while travelling and living abroad on a digital nomad visa.

To get started as a freelance writer I suggest putting your profile up on Fiverr. This is how I got started writing freelance travel articles. Then I joined a few writing Facebook Groups and have clients through them. 

 

3. Proofreading and Editing

 

Many introverts I have met love to read. So why not put your reading skills to good use. If you aren’t aware of the difference of proofreading and editing I will quickly give you the definition of both. Proofreading involves looking at text closely, line by line, word by word to spot any spelling and grammatical mistakes. While Editing refers to making more local changes to things like sentence structure and phrasing to make sure your meaning is conveyed clearly and concisely. So you could decide to be a proofreader or an editor, or both. To do this sort of work I suggest you have some sort of qualification in the field. I actually have a Diploma of Proofreading and Editing from the Australian College of Journalism. I did it to help improve my writing. So as well as being a freelance traveler writer / blogger, I also do proofreading. I got my first client through a Facebook Group and she recommended me to other travel bloggers who needed proofreading help. This goes to show, if you do a good job, people often recommend you.

To start as a proofreader and editor when you are an introvert I suggest you do a course first, then offer your services in Facebook Groups and upload a profile onto sites such as Fiverr.

 

4. Virtual Assistant (VA)

 

Being a virtual assistant is such a great online job for introverts. It allows you to use your skills to work from anywhere and be paid for it. Virtual assistants help other people and businesses with their overflow of work. Many VAs specialise in a number of areas and offer services in one or more fields. Many VAs specialise so they are great in one or two fields rather than mediocre in a lot of fields. Even if this is done in an office, you will be working independently and concentrating on what you are doing. But this type of work can easily be done remotely from home or anywhere. I have done this type of work and what often counts the most is your typing speed. The faster the better, as long as you are accurate. Plus having knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word and Google Sheets will come in handy. Many data entry introverts find jobs via Fiverr, Upwork and FlexJobs. Linkedin also may be useful.

 

7. Bookkeeper

 

Behind every good accountant is usually a great bookkeeper! To be a bookkeeper you will have done a course to learn the fundamentals of accounting plus have knowledge of the latest accounting software packages such as MYOB. You will be responsible for reconciling bank accounts, recording financial transactions, tracking expenses and handling accounts payable and receivable. What’s a drop shipper I hear you ask? Well it is someone who has an ecommerce store that sells goods from a third party. Meaning, you don’t keep stock on hand. So for instance, you are selling bags on your website, someone buys the bag and an order is placed with you, you then order the bag from your supplier and then the supplier fulfils the order. Read my post on Being a Drop shipper. It is a great sort of job for introverts as there is no face-to-face selling as all correspondence is done online. To start drop shipping you will need to have a platform to sell your products – this could be on Facebook or your own website.

 

10. Technical Support

 

A remote IT support job is well-suited for introverts who enjoy solving technical problems without in-person interactions. Programming typically involves working independently, focusing on complex problem-solving tasks, and spending long periods of time in front of a computer. When not so technical people have issues with their tech, they turn to a technical support person. When I have technical issues with my website I turn to a specialist website tech person who resolves my issues.

Content creation is not knew as it has been the cornerstone of marketing for a very long time. Marketing is one of the best ways to get your message out to the world to create a buzz about your services, products or brand. With the advent of the online world, particularly as the internet becomes more prevalent in our everyday lives, content creation has become a major part of this online world. 

So what exactly is content creation and who creates this content that we are seeing every day and why is it now so important in this digital world we live in? In this post I will explain just that, provide the ins and outs of content creation, who creates it and how you can become a content creator who works from home or abroad.

As a content creator myself, I’ve been able to travel the world while running my online business. In fact, my online content creation business nowadays funds all my travels. And where do you get these skills from? You have probably developed them by using platforms yourself. And many of us spend hours (sometimes) scrolling through the different social media outlets and unbeknown to us, we are getting skills. We have learnt how to post not only photos but reels and video. We are learning how to monetise our social media channels. Right! This is great news so if you are serious about becoming a content creator, there are a number of steps you need to follow to turn this interest into a money making career.

 

Steps for how to be a Content Creator

1. Decide on what type of content creator you want to be. What are you good at. Most content creators will specialise in one, maybe two areas. Take me for instance, I have been a travel writer for some 30 years, so I specialise in content creation of the written word. I write blog posts and I also proofread and edit them. What are you good at or enjoy?
2. Understand your why and your audience. People are attracted to certain things because it answers a question they have. So understand what answers to questions you will be providing and who is the audience? Research your market. You need to understand your chosen market so you can provide the appropriate content. Follow those who may be already doing what you want to do and do similar but different so you stand out!
3. Choose a platform. There are a few social media channels – Facebook (with over 2 billion active users) is great for businesses to promote themselves with written posts, ads and short videos. YouTube (with some 2.6 billion users) is perfect for vlogging (video blogging). – Instagram (with an estimated 2 billion users) is great for images and short video. Other platforms include TikTok,Twitter and Pinterest to name a few. For me, my chosen platform is this website. I provide written content that provides ‘how to’ information, like how to become a content creator. And I promote my website on Facebook and Pinterest – these are the two markets that currently work for me to get my words out there. What is your chosen platform? Also, not all social platforms are created equally. Not only do they attract different audiences, but some platforms have been created for a specific type of content. WordPress is synonymous with blogs. YouTube is the home of video. You get the idea.
4. Decide on your business structure? I suggest you think about this here because you need to decide if you will be the content creator for yourself creating things like a blog or are you going to offer freelance services where you will be providing creative content for other people as a virtual assistant (VA). There is no harm in doing both. I have my own blogs and websites but I also write and proofread articles for other bloggers.
5. Create your personal brand. Your brand is usually your name, your own name or a business name. My brand name is Live Work Play Travel and my target audience is people who want to travel, live and work abroad either at home working remotely or on the road as a digital nomad.
6. Start creating regular content. People crave new content and it is up to you to provide it. Posting new content regularly, which could be daily, is a must. So as not to be posting blindly, many people write themselves a social media strategy which includes ideas of what they will post for the next week, month, or even year. Once you start creating regular content you could consider monetising your content. Monetising your content basically means, making money from your content.
7. Monetise your content. There are different ways to monetise your content. You may want to work with brands where you promote products such as hotels or clothes. You will need to put together a media kit or UGC (User-Generated Content) portfolio, so you can secure partnerships and collaborations. Some influencer platforms like Social Native, is a great place to find brands looking for influencers or to connect with content creators. Or you could join affiliate programs which is what I have done with my website. For promoting organisations, known as affiliate marketing, such as Booking.com (for accommodation) or GetYourGuide (for tours) I receive a commission for every sale made via my website. A good thing about affiliate marketing is you don’t need to have a huge audience to get started with this. Consulting is another option to make money from your passion. If you are proficient in your field people may want to learn from you. This can be anything from teaching classes on certain software programs, social media outlets or freelance writing.
8. Focus on quality over quantity. In the meantime, keep posting quality content or help someone to post quality content to build up followers so you can start making an online income. Even if you aren’t making any, or much money at first keep practising as practice makes you better. 
9. Market Yourself. If you create content you need to let people know you are creating content. So set up those social media accounts and start spreading the word. Even have your own website to advertise yourself and your services. Join Facebook groups or advertise your services on such sites as Fiverr.
10. Measure success through KPI tracking  Keeping track of your key performance indicators (KPIs) is important as these will tell you what is and isn’t working. I use Google Analytics to help me know which of my posts are popular.

 

TIP: Invest in tools to help you succeed. Tools such as Canva to create many visual. Grammarly to ensure your writing makes sense. Physical camera and video equipment to capture photos and video with clarity. And don’t forget your office set up.

 

Can you make a living from creating content?

 

Sure can! Follow the above steps, provide quality content and you should be able to make a living from creating content either for yourself or other people or organisations. But how much do content creators make I hear you ask? Well how long is a piece of string. It is too hard to give a specific figure as I am not privy to content creators income. But many content creators are making very decent incomes from providing content. Enough to live on and enough to fund their travels as they live and work abroad as digital nomads.

Through a digital nomad visa program, you can live and work in a country from six months to two years. And in many instances, this time can be extended. Each digital nomad visa program is different and there are different guidelines and rules that come with them. In general to apply for a digital nomad visa requirements often include: 

• Proof of employment and income – this can be bank statements or recent invoices. This visa requires you to be earning enough to sustain your lifestyle while living and working abroad in their country.
• Proof of health and travel insurance – this is where a good policy such as one through SafetyWing comes into play.
• Proof of financial resources – bank statements can show your balance.
• Paying visa fees and taxes – most digital nomad visas have a fee.

What I love about the digital nomad visa is there is no age limit. Truly! No age limit, unlike with the working holiday visa which is for young people aged 18-30 years (sometimes 35 years). Option 2: Working Holiday Visa Schemes

 

Countries with a working holiday visa program allow those that qualify for the visa to come to their country for an extended time, usually 1-2 years, to combine work with a holiday. Depending on where you are from, a working holiday visa (WHV) may be your best option for working abroad. 

 

Requirements for the Working Holiday Visa

 

• There is an age limit. People aged 18-30 or sometimes 18-35 can apply as long as there is an agreement in place between your country and other countries. If you don’t qualify for a working holiday visa, don’t worry as there are work abroad opportunities for when you are over 30 years of age.
• You will need to have a certain amount of money in your bank account to support yourself during your initial stay.
• Paying visa fees and taxes – most working holiday visas have a fee.

Regarding housing, certain areas offer a more affordable cost of living. You will find some of Spain’s cheapest places to live in the region of Andalucia, particularly on the Huelva and Cadiz coasts. There’s a scheme called ‘Alquiler Temporada Escolar (school season rental)’ where apartments and houses can be rented from September to June at costs ranging from €300 to €600. 

The best of these rental models is that the price usually includes bills and wifi. If you’re lucky enough, you might even have a swimming pool and a backyard. This is perfect for seasonal workers and digital nomads in Spain. Then, in major cities like Madrid and Barcelona, rental prices can be higher but still affordable, ranging from €600 to €1,200 per month.

But my favorite part is Spanish food – tasty, healthy, and budget-friendly. Dining out and groceries for couples can cost as little as €40 to €70 per week.

In conclusion, Spain provides a diverse range of lifestyles, with varying living costs depending on where you choose to live in Spain. 

 

Regional Differences in Spain

 

When speaking of Spain, one must keep in mind that it’s a vast country, with 17 autonomous regions. Each Spanish region having its own culture, traditions, and often its own language. Plus, considerable differences in climate, work market, and many other significant aspects.

Big and famous cities like Madrid and Barcelona are fast-moving cities with lots of jobs and opportunities, but they can be expensive compared to the rest of Spain.

In the south, what I call the real essence of Spain, life is slower and cheaper in places like Seville, Cadiz, Huelva, and Malaga. There may be fewer job options, but if you have your own business, are working on-line or are a freelancer, it’s the perfect place to be. Then there are cities like Valencia and Alicante, which are perfect spots for families, that combine city life and beaches. The cost of living is lower than in Madrid or Barcelona.

The sunny islands, Canary on the African coast, and the Baleares in the Mediterranean. These have a completely different feeling, with their own language, gastronomy, and slang. Jobs are usually linked to tourism, so you have great chances to find work if you speak German, French, or Dutch as these nationalities love to holiday here. 

Up North, in The Basque Country, with cities like Bilbao, you can experience a great economy with jobs in manufacturing and tech. Living is pricey but less than in the big cities. On the other hand, Asturias and Galicia, are green, with a lot of fresh fish, and peaceful. Weather is not typically warm aside from summers, and you’ll find fewer career possibilities, but living in Asturias is generally cheaper.

In addition, two autonomous cities, officially Spanish territory, are located along the North African coast of Morocco: Ceuta and Melilla. The most unique cities in the whole country.
