Let’s face it, at some point while living, working, or travelling abroad, chances are you’ll need to get behind the wheel to drive somewhere. Driving in a foreign country for the first time can feel intimidating. You might be on the opposite side of the road, in an unfamiliar car, or navigating new road signs and rules. There can be a lot to contend with when driving abroad.

The good news? With a bit of preparation and a realistic mindset, driving abroad doesn’t have to be stressful. These 10 practical tips for first-time drivers abroad will help you stay calm, confident and safer on the road.

10 Tips for Driving Abroad for the First Time

There are a number of advantages to renting a car. Travelling by car provides freedom, flexibility and privacy while allowing control over your itinerary and pace. You could even use the car as your accommodation by car camping. But if you’ve never driven abroad before, you will need some tips.

Beforehand, Choose the Appropriate Car

Before you even start driving abroad you need access to a vehicle. Most will rent a car. I suggest when choosing a car to rent is to opt for a small automatic car.

1. Opt for an Automatic Car

If you’re not comfortable driving a manual transmission, or you’ll be driving on the opposite side of the road, choosing an automatic car can make a big difference. It removes one major distraction and allows you to focus on road signs, traffic flow, and navigation.

In some countries, automatic cars are more expensive or in shorter supply, so make sure to book early if this is a priority for you. For many first-time drivers abroad, opting for an automatic is one of the simplest ways to feel more relaxed and in control behind the wheel.

2. Choose a Small Car

Opting for a smaller car can make your first driving experience abroad much easier. Compact vehicles are simpler to manoeuvre, park, and navigate through narrow streets. This is something you’ll especially appreciate in older European cities, small towns, or rural villages.

Smaller cars are often more fuel-efficient too, which can save you money on longer drives. If you’re new to driving on unfamiliar roads, the reduced size and agility of a compact car can make your journey less stressful and more enjoyable.

3. Request a GPS

Getting lost in a foreign country can quickly turn stressful. A built-in GPS or a trusted navigation app can help you stay calm and focused on driving.

If you’re using your phone, download offline maps in advance and consider an international data plan or local SIM. Clear directions reduce last-minute lane changes and help you anticipate turns well ahead of time.

And Don’t Forget

4. Check If You Need an International Driving Permit

Depending on where you’re travelling, you may need an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your regular driver’s license. Some countries legally require one, while others don’t, but rental car companies may still insist on it before handing over the keys.

Remember: an IDP is a translation of your license, not a substitute. You usually need to apply in your home country before travelling, so don’t leave it until the last minute.

To avoid any surprises at the rental counter, take a moment to check both the local driving regulations and the rental company’s specific requirements. A little preparation here can save you a lot of hassle later.

Once in Your Car

5. Get Use to the Car

Before leaving the rental car lot, take a few minutes to settle in. Adjust your seat and mirrors so you’re comfortable, test the brakes, and locate key controls like indicators, headlights, windscreen wipers, and hazard lights.

This is especially important if you’re driving on the opposite side of the road. Many first-time drivers accidentally hit the wipers instead of the indicators during the first few days, it’s more common than you think!

If possible, do a short test drive in a quiet area or car park. Even a few minutes of practice can make navigating busy streets or highways feel much less stressful.

6. Know the Laws and Speed Limits

Driving laws can vary more than you might expect from one country to another, so it’s worth doing a bit of homework before you hit the road. Speed limits can change quickly, roundabouts may work differently than what you’re used to, and rules around things like mobile phone use, seat belts, and headlights can be much stricter abroad.

For example, in many parts of Europe, speed cameras are everywhere, and fines are often sent directly to the rental car company, which then passes the cost on to you (usually with an extra admin fee). In Australia, speed limits are enforced closely too, even on long, quiet rural roads where it’s tempting to relax a bit.

Spend a few minutes researching basic driving laws for your destination before you go. It can save you money… and frustration.

7. Pay Close Attention to the Road

Road signs, markings, and driving behaviour can be very different from what you’re used to. Road signs may look unfamiliar, lane markings can change without much warning, and driving styles vary widely. In some places, drivers are assertive and fast-paced; in others, things move at a much more relaxed rhythm. You may also be sharing the road with pedestrians, cyclists, scooters, farm vehicles, or even animals.

For your first few drives, try to minimise distractions as much as possible. Put your phone out of reach, keep music low, and save long conversations for later. Pay attention to how local drivers behave, when they merge, how they use indicators, and how closely they follow the rules. These unspoken habits are often just as important as the written laws, and you’ll start to pick them up quicker than you expect.

8. Stay in the Slow Lane

There’s no rush. Stick to the slower lanes, especially on motorways, and let faster drivers pass you. In many popular travel destinations, locals are used to seeing tourists drive a little more cautiously, so this is rarely an issue.

Driving at a calmer pace gives you extra time to read road signs, process unfamiliar layouts, and react to unexpected turns or roundabouts. It also helps reduce stress, which makes the whole experience far more enjoyable. As you get more comfortable and confident behind the wheel, you can gradually start tackling busier roads or faster routes.

9. Avoid Driving When Tired

Driving abroad demands more focus and energy than driving at home, so it’s important to avoid getting behind the wheel when you’re tired. Jet lag, long flights, or a busy day of travel can seriously slow your reaction times and impair decision-making, something you don’t want when navigating unfamiliar roads.

If you’ve just arrived in a new country, consider waiting until the next day to drive, or plan only a very short, simple route for your first outing. And if you start feeling drowsy while driving, don’t push it. Pull over safely, take a short rest, or switch drivers if someone else is with you. Prioritising alertness over convenience can prevent accidents and make your first driving experience abroad far less stressful.

10. Don’t Be Over-Ambitious

It’s tempting to plan scenic mountain drives or city centre routes right away, but simpler is better when you’re starting out.

Begin with straightforward highways or rural roads, then work your way up to more complex driving situations. Busy cities, narrow streets, and heavy traffic are much easier to handle once you’re familiar with local rules and your car.

Start Your Engine……….Be Ready to Drive Abroad

Now the fun part starts. Have you got road trip snacks and music?

And if you are planning a trip through Europe, to visit these two cities you will be considering your Europe travel options to get to them. Now there are a couple of ways to travel between each of them including by hopping on a plane, sailing across the Channel or to take the Eurostar between London and Paris. In this post I will answer the frequently asked questions how you can travel Paris to London by train or London to Paris by train aboard the Eurostar.

Luckily for you, I’ve done the research and experienced traveling aboard the Eurostar firsthand. Use this guide on how to get from Paris to London by train and vice versa to make the most of your Eurostar journey. Here goes.

Eurostar FAQs & Useful Info

What is the Eurostar

Let’s kick off this guide on how to take the Eurostar from London to Paris with a little bit of history. The Eurostar is the train that runs through the Channel Tunnel, popularly known as the Chunnel. The Channel Tunnel is a 31 mile or 50km undersea rail tunnel that goes from Folkestone in Kent in the UK to Coquelles in Pas-de-Calais near Calais in northern France. It is more than 200 feet deep at its lowest point and has the distinction of having the longest undersea portion of any tunnel in the world.

The tunnel was built to accommodate high-speed trains linking the two countries – called Eurostar. Trains rains are not only passenger trains linking the two countries, but offer roll-on, roll-off vehicle transport and international freight.

Building a tunnel between France and England had been mooted a number of times including way back in 1802 by Albert Mathieu, a French mining engineer who proposed an underwater tunnel. Finally in 1988 politics was settled and construction began with the tunnel finally opening in 1994. And since then, the Eurostar trains have been linking the two countries, particularly the two cities of London and Paris in a mere 2 hours and 16 minutes.

Eurostar and Tunnel Facts and Figures

Tunnel Length: 31 miles or 50 kms
Tunnel Depth: 200 feet or just under 61 metres at the lowest point
Speed: travels at speeds of up to 186 miles per hour or 299 kilometres per hour
Time under The Channel: 22-35 minutes out of the total journey taking 2 hours 16 mins.
What can you see: it’s dark in the tunnel and you don’t see anything from your window. For the rest of the time you are above ground and see English or French countryside.

Pros and Cons of Travelling on the Eurostar

There are many reasons to take (or not) the high-speed service when travelling between Paris and London. These are the main ones to consider:

You are allowed two bags free of charge, which is far more than the airlines.

Check-in is as late as 40 to 45 minutes before the train leaves.

Security procedures are generally quicker than at the airport.

Trains are more environmentally-friendly as they generate less pollution and carbon emissions than flying or driving.

Cons of travelling on the Eurostar

You may not like being in a tunnel for so long.

Where do Eurostar Trains Depart and Arrive

On the London-Paris route, Eurostar trains travel between St. Pancras International Rail Station in central London to Gare du Nord in central Paris in the 10th arrondissement.

Both these major train stations are connected to the London Underground (subway) and Paris Metro trains making it easy to get to where you want to go in London or Paris.

Check-in Procedures for Eurostar Trains

You are expected to check-in at least 45 minutes before the scheduled departure time of the train, and you must do so in person. So ensure you have printed your ticket in advance or use an e-ticket by downloading the Eurostar app on your phone.

Entrance is through automatic gates where you will need to scan your ticket’s barcode to go through. And be prepared for routine scanning of your bags and you may be required to take your shoes off – just like at the airport.

Once through the security area, present your passport to immigration authorities. You will pass through immigration checks at both French and UK borders.

Once through you will enter the Eurostar departure lounge and gates. Like at the airport, there are duty-free shops, restaurants and my favourite – free Wifi. Business-class travellers and ‘Carte Glance’ members benefit from dedicated, fast-track lines and a premier lounge.

When the gate opens, board the train and find your seat. The two key numbers to look for are the train and the seat which are both on your ticket. If you enter the right carriage by the coach number, it will make it easier to find your seat number. Once found, there is plenty of storage to store your luggage at both ends of the carriage and also in overhead racks for smaller carry-on-size luggage.

How to Organise Your Eurostar Journey

Organising a trip on the Eurostar is easy as Eurostar has a great website explaining everything.

How to Book a Ticket on the Eurostar

You can book a ticket on the Eurostar up to 180 days before travel. Visit the Eurostar website for details of purchasing your ticket online. The website has all the details on special fares and the different class of ticket you can purchase. You can choose between standard, standard premier and business premier – each offering different services such as a meal, newspaper included in the price of your ticket. Also find out the other Eurostar destinations as you can catch it to Belgium and Germany. But the most popular route is London to Paris and vice versa.

I found the whole experience of traveling on the Eurostar an enjoyable one. It was easy to buy a ticket and the procedure to get on to the train was easy and fairly stress-free. I had a window seat and enjoyed seeing the countryside as the train scooted along. It slowed before entering the tunnel and then it was dark for the time in the tunnel, then countryside again. I liked how the trains had display monitors showing the train’s map location, estimated arrival time and the train’s speed – it made me feel better about where I was. The light refreshments I was served was nice and I enjoyed the free Wifi. And getting off the train was stress free also. I enjoyed leaving London and finding myself in Paris.

Embarking on a road trip is more than just a journey; it’s an exploration of freedom, discovery, and personal adventure. The allure of the open road has captivated the hearts of travelers for generations, offering a unique way to experience the world at one’s own pace. On a road trip, every turn brings a new vista, every stop introduces a different story, and every journey promises memories that last a lifetime. However, the key to plan a road trip and unlocking this enchantment lies in thoughtful planning and preparation. Guest poster Patrick @ Goodcar explains how to plan your road trip in this road trip guide.

How to Plan a Road Trip

So how do you plan a road trip? A well-planned road trip can transform ordinary travel into an extraordinary experience. It’s not just about choosing the right destination or mapping the route; it’s about ensuring safety, comfort, and enjoyment throughout the journey. From selecting the perfect vehicle to packing essential gear, from budgeting for unexpected expenses to preparing for roadside emergencies, each step plays a crucial role in crafting a memorable adventure.

Initial Planning and Preparation

A successful road trip begins long before you hit the road. This stage is all about laying the groundwork for a smooth and enjoyable journey.

Choosing Your Route

When planning road trips, the route sets the tone for your entire trip. When you own a car, it’s even more crucial to consider factors like scenic views, cultural landmarks, and road conditions. A well-chosen route can lead you through breathtaking landscapes and to hidden gems that enrich your travel experience.

For instance, if you’re driving from San Francisco to Los Angeles, the coastal route via Highway 1 offers breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and stops like the iconic Big Sur. This choice not only defines your travel experience but also allows for unexpected discoveries along the way.

Vehicle Preparation

The reliability of your vehicle is paramount and should be considered when you plan a trip by car. For example, if you’re planning a road trip in the summer, it’s vital to check your car’s air conditioning system, coolant levels, and ensure your tires are suited for hot asphalt. A traveler heading to Yellowstone National Park would need to ensure their vehicle is capable of handling both highway and potentially rough park roads. As well as checking the air conditioning, simple checks of the oil and water levels plus others can ensure your car runs smoothly.

Budgeting for the Trip

A realistic budget is vital to enjoy your journey without financial stress. It should include all potential expenses: fuel, accommodation, food, attractions, and a contingency fund for unforeseen costs.

A well-planned budget prevents financial surprises. Imagine you’re planning a week-long road trip across the New England states during fall foliage season. Your budget should include not just the obvious costs like fuel and food but also account for park entrance fees, occasional splurges on local delicacies, and souvenirs. This foresight in budgeting allows you to enjoy the kaleidoscope of autumn colors without financial worries.

Each of these steps is crucial in setting the stage for planning a road trip that’s as smooth as it is memorable. By paying attention to these details, travelers can focus on the joys of the journey, confident that they have prepared for a variety of scenarios. So set up a budget table if necessary to help plan a journey by car.

Packing Essentials for the Journey

Packing for a road trip involves more than just filling a suitcase. It requires thoughtful consideration of every item to ensure safety, comfort, and convenience on the road. Here’s a closer look at what to include to plan a driving trip:

Safety and Emergency Gear: Safety should always be a top priority. Essential items include a well-stocked first-aid kit, a reliable flashlight, a spare tire, a jack, and basic repair tools. It’s also wise to carry an emergency road kit, which might include items like road flares, jumper cables, and a fire extinguisher. Don’t forget to pack a physical map or atlas, even if you rely on digital navigation tools, as a backup in areas with poor signal reception.

Comfort and Convenience: Comfort can greatly enhance your road trip experience. Pack clothing suitable for various weather conditions and comfortable for long drives. Include travel pillows and blankets for relaxation during breaks or if you plan to camp. Snacks and a cooler with drinks keep hunger at bay between stops. For entertainment, consider bringing along music playlists, audiobooks, and portable games to make the journey more enjoyable.

Navigation Tools: Reliable navigation is key to a stress-free road trip. A GPS device is invaluable for route guidance, while smartphone apps can provide real-time traffic updates and suggest places of interest. However, technology can sometimes fail, so it’s essential to have a physical map or printed directions as a backup. Familiarize yourself with your route beforehand to reduce reliance on navigation aids.

Food: Having some snacks to eat during the car ride is essential. Bringing some from home helps to keep you within budget. Plus, bringing food to cook your own meals can help keep food costs down during your road trip, particularly if camping and bring your own cooking equipment.

Proper packing is crucial in creating a comfortable and secure environment in your vehicle. By covering all bases—from emergency scenarios to daily comfort—you set the stage for a road trip that is both enjoyable and well-prepared for any situation.

On the Road – Making the Most of Your Trip

Once you hit the road, the real adventure begins. This phase of the trip is about embracing the journey, exploring new places, and creating unforgettable memories. Here’s how to make the most of your time on the road:

Sightseeing and Activities

A road trip is the perfect opportunity to explore off-the-beaten-path destinations and attractions. Many use apps to plan for stops at major landmarks, but also leave room for spontaneous visits to local spots, scenic overlooks, and small towns. Research activities along your route that align with your interests, whether it’s hiking in national parks, exploring historical sites, or trying regional cuisines. Use Google Maps to plan a road trip and remember, the journey is as important as the destination, so savour each moment and discovery.

Staying Flexible

One of the joys of road tripping is the freedom to adjust your plans as you go. Be open to changing your itinerary based on weather conditions, recommendations from locals, or simply your mood. This flexibility can lead to some of the most memorable and unique experiences of your trip. However, while spontaneity is a key part of the adventure, always ensure that safety and feasibility are considered in any change of plans.

Documenting the Experience

Capturing memories is an important part of any trip. Take plenty of photos and consider keeping a travel journal to record your experiences and thoughts. These mementos will be valuable in reliving and sharing your journey with others. Additionally, sharing your adventure on social media can not only keep friends and family updated but also serve as a digital scrapbook of your journey.

Safety and Emergency Preparedness

Ensuring safety and being prepared for emergencies are paramount in road trip planning. This aspect of travel often receives less attention but is crucial for a stress-free and secure journey. Here’s what you need to know:

Dealing with Unexpected Situations

Despite thorough planning, unexpected situations can arise. These could range from minor inconveniences like a flat tire to more significant issues such as health emergencies or severe weather conditions. Familiarize yourself with basic car repair skills, such as changing a tire or jump-starting a car. Always carry an emergency contact list, including numbers for local emergency services, your car insurance company, and roadside assistance.

Understanding and Arranging Towing Services

Knowing how to handle a situation where your vehicle cannot be driven is crucial. Research and keep a list of reliable towing services along your route. Understand the terms of your car insurance and whether it includes roadside assistance and towing. In case of a breakdown, ensure your safety first by moving your car to a safe location and signaling other drivers using hazard lights or road flares.

Preparation for safety and emergencies involves not only having the right tools and information but also the knowledge of how to use them effectively. By being well-prepared, you can handle unforeseen circumstances with confidence, ensuring they become just a small bump in the road of an otherwise memorable journey.

Accommodation and Overnight Stops

Choosing where to rest each night is a crucial part of road trip planning. Your choices for accommodation can significantly affect the overall experience of your journey. Here are some key considerations:

Booking in Advance vs Spontaneous Stays

Deciding whether to book accommodations in advance or find places on the fly depends on your travel style and the nature of your trip. Pre-booking can provide peace of mind, ensuring you have a place to stay, especially during peak travel seasons or in popular destinations. On the other hand, spontaneous stays offer more flexibility, allowing you to adjust your itinerary as you go. However, this approach might lead to challenges in finding available or affordable options, especially in remote areas or during busy times. To book your accommodation in advance check out the options on Booking.com.

Camping vs Hotels

Your choice of accommodation can range from camping under the stars to staying in comfortable hotels. Camping can offer a closer connection to nature and a more budget-friendly option, but it requires additional gear and preparation. Hotels and motels, meanwhile, provide more comfort and amenities, such as Wi-Fi and breakfast, but at a higher cost. Your decision might also be influenced by the location, weather, and the type of experience you seek.

Each type of accommodation has its unique charm and challenges. It’s essential to consider what works best for your road trip in terms of comfort, budget, and the overall experience you desire.

Returning Home – Wrapping Up the Journey

The conclusion of a road trip is as significant as its beginning. It’s a time to reflect, organize, and transition back to everyday life, while also taking care of post-trip essentials.

Post-Trip Vehicle Maintenance

After a long journey, your vehicle will need some attention. It’s important to perform a post-trip checkup, including an oil change, tire pressure check, and a general inspection to ensure everything is in good working order. This maintenance not only extends the life of your vehicle but also prepares it for your next adventure.

Reflecting on the Experience

Returning home offers an opportunity to reflect on your travels. Go through your photos, update your travel journal, and share stories with friends and family or perhaps start a blog to share your experiences. This reflection helps in consolidating memories and appreciating the experiences you’ve had. It’s also an excellent time to think about what went well and what could be improved for future trips.

Planning the Next Adventure

Often, one road trip sparks the desire for another. While the experiences are still fresh, start thinking about your next journey to avoid common travel scams. As you reflect on your recent travels, take note of any situations where you felt vulnerable to fraud or deception, and research ways to safeguard against these in the future. Consider destinations you might have discovered during your trip or new travel ideas that emerged, while also planning how to travel smarter and safer next time. Planning your next adventure can be a wonderful way to keep the spirit of travel alive, even as you settle back into your routine.

Wrapping up the journey thoughtfully ensures that the road trip has a lasting positive impact, both in terms of memories and practical learning. It’s a crucial step in turning your road trip into a chapter of your life story that you can look back on fondly.

The first overnight train travel I ever took was the Caledonian Sleeper train from London to Edinburgh. I thought it would be a good idea to get on the train at 10pm, settle into my bed and wake up the next morning in another city, in another country. And apart from waking a few times due to train movement, I thoroughly enjoyed the train ride. I was woken early in the morning by the attendant with my breakfast – that was something I wasn’t expecting. But it made my first overnight sleeper train trip more special.

I’ve taken a few overnight train trips now. There was the XPT (Express Passenger Train) from Melbourne to Sydney. Then there was Paris to Berlin while Eurailing through Europe. And also, the Northern Explorer from Auckland to Wellington in New Zealand and a few other night sleeper trains over the years.

Ready to book your overnight train ticket?

If you are are considering taking an overnight train, here are some pros and cons to consider before booking your overnight train journey.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Sleeper Trains

As with every sort of travel option to help you travel the world there are pros and cons. Let’s start with the advantages of overnight train travel.

Pros of Overnight Train Travel

1. Save on Accommodation Costs

The first pro of traveling overnight in a sleeper train is you are making a saving on accommodation. Instead of two costs – the train fare and hotel accommodation for the night – roll both into one cost and you instantly are saving!

2. Let’s you Keep Traveling

As the overnight train trip is your accommodation for the night, you can get off the train in the morning at a new destination. A new city in a new country perhaps! Hopefully you will have got some rest on the train, and when you get off you will be ready and raring to go for your day of sightseeing or whatever you have planned.

3. Train Travel is more Environmentally-friendly

Most trains nowadays are electric and more sustainable than car and air travel that rely on fossil fuels for them to drive and fly. In our current world where most of us are concerned about climate change the friendlier to the environment our travel is, where less emissions are released into the atmosphere, the better for the planet. Trains have a lower carbon footprint and that is a really good thing.

4. Overnight Train Travel Can Be Loads of Fun

I was surprised at first how many people travel on overnight trains. For my first overnight train trip I was expecting the train to be empty – how wrong I was. There were all sorts of people traveling. Families that were visiting family in other cities, solo backpackers traveling around and couples of all ages going places. Depending on the people in the carriage, you can meet loads of other people in similar situations to you. And this can make the trip lots of fun.

5. Train travel is a Comfortable Way of Traveling

I find traveling by train in general is a more comfortable way of traveling. Seats can be comfortable and I like that you can get up and go for a walk whenever you want. As long as you come prepared for your overnight train journey you can survive long-haul and overnight train travel.

6. Avoid Airport Hassles

Even though I love catching planes, after all, they can be way quicker than trains, travelling by train helps to avoid airport hassles. What I mean by this is, cancelled flights, baggage restrictions, long security lines to make your flight. Train travel in general provides a hassle-free (usually) and more relaxed experience. There is no luggage limit and you don’t have the long security lines to get onto your train.

7. It’s Usually Faster than Traveling by Bus

Train travel is not as fast as traveling by plane, but it is faster than traveling by bus. And more comfortable.

8. See Scenic Routes and Cities at Night

I love sitting in a train and staring fixated out of the window watching the countryside and picturesque towns as the train passes by. When you travel at night, even though it is dark, you can still see the countryside and towns. Instead of seeing a town in the daylight, you will see it with all its lights on – magical!

9. Visit and See Bonus Places

Travelling by train will see the train stop at different places along its route. You may have never considered stopping here previously, until your train does. As most train stations are in the centre of town, you can have a small layover and discover the town, before getting back on the train. I discovered this when I was Eurailing and I needed to change trains to get to the French Riviera. I stopped somewhere in France for a few hours and I discovered the best patisserie!

10. You Have Time to Work, Relax or Sleep

When you travel by train, you can literally do whatever you want to do, within reason that is. You could work on your laptop or phone. Relax by watching the world go by from your window seat. Or sleep. What a great way to travel!

11. Facilities Onboard

Long distance trains have facilities onboard like bathrooms, sleeping areas or cabins and a meal carriage where you can get different foods ranging from snacks to fine dining.

The Cons of Overnight Train Travel

4-birth sleeper cabin

Before you choose to travel overnight by train or not, you will want to consider the cons to overnight train travel. So here are some disadvantages of traveling by train overnight.

1. Overnight Train Travel Can Cost More

Yes, overnight train travel can cost more than travel through the day. This is mainly because overnight trains are designed to carry people overnight and so have sleeping areas. This could be a whole carriage of bunk beds. And thus, just to lay down, you will need to pay extra for the privilege.

2. Sleeping Quarters on Trains can be Tight

The overnight train sleeping compartments can be quite small and tight. When I travelled on sleeper trains from London to Edinburgh the compartment was at a stretch 1.5 metres (just under 5 Foot) wide x 2.5 metres (about 8 Foot) long. There were two beds, bunk beds, one above the other. There was a little window and a small door leading to a toilet and hand basin. I was lucky, the train was pretty empty that night and they moved the other person I was to share the cabin with to another one. Sharing this space with someone I did not know might have been very uncomfortable indeed.

3. Chairs and Beds aren’t always Comfortable

Beds and chairs on overnight trains are designed as much as possible to provide comfort. But everyone is different and one size doesn’t fit all.

TIP: To help with comfort if travelling overnight on a train in a seat, take a neck pillow, blanket, snacks and a bottle of water. A pack of cards is helpful if you want to play games with other passengers.

4. Limited Facilities onboard the Train

Trains have limited facilities onboard so if you are looking to have a shower or a good meal, think again. Most trains have toilets and hand basins, but not many have showers. Plus as the facilities are shared, they may be cramped and not very clean. Trains may also have a meal carriage serving limited foods and drinks.

TIP: Take your own snacks when travelling overnight by train.

5. Trains are Not Quiet

Even though you may be in the sleeping area of a train, trains are not always quiet. Apart from the usual train noises, you will encounter people unable to sleep. They unfortunately may have a light on to read or may be on their phone. Card games could be played. People could be walking around or they may just be having conversations. And you can hear everything. That’s when noise cancelling headphones come in!

6. Trains Move

There is also the movement of the train to deal with – they swaying. On my trip from Melbourne to Sydney, the train seemed to go around a lot of bends. I was laying with my head towards the outside of the carriage. As the train cornered I often felt like I was upside down. This would wake me up.

7. The Views Can be Limited

Because it is so dark outside overnight, you may not see the scenery as you might during the daylight hours. If seeing the scenery matters, I would suggest traveling by day.

8. Extended Travel Time

In most cases, trains will almost always take longer than flights. Airplanes obviously travel at higher speeds, covering long distances quickly, while train journeys often involve multiple stops. While overnight train travel has its advantages, those seeking a faster option may find flying more suitable.

9. There is The Risk of Theft

Unfortunately, there is always some risk that your belongings will be stolen while you are sleeping, not watching or while you go to the toilet or to buy a coffee. Therefore, practicing caution by knowing where your luggage is at all times will help. Also secure your luggage with a padlock so no-one can open it. And also keep your valuables on you or very close by.

10. Unexpected Delays

Trains can be delayed for a variety of reasons. There may be obstacles on the tracks. Signal failure. Snow. Or the train could simply be running late or worse, cancelled due to lack of a train driver or other things. Delays can throw any best laid plans into chaos. If you are worried about this, make sure to buy travel insurance.

FAQs about Overnight Train Travel?

What is sleeper car?

A sleeper car is a carriage of a train where there is a dedicated car or cars for its passengers to sleep in at night. George Pullman was the American innovator of the sleeper car. In fact, Pullman is the term used for railroad sleeping cars built and operated by the Pullman Company from 1867 to 1968.

Is overnight train travel safe?

Yes overnight train travel is safe. Every person who gets on the train, besides the staff on the train, has a ticket. I cannot vouch for everyone’s personality and motives of train travel, but my expectations are, train travel is safe because you are with other passengers doing what you are doing. It would be unfortunate if anyone got on the train to cause distress to other passengers.

Do sleeper trains have toilets?

Yes. Some rooms may have en-suite facilities but if not, there would be a shared toilet available.

Do sleeper trains have showers?

Some trains offer a range of hotel-like amenities where a shower is available, but most don’t.

Do you share a room on a sleeper train?

Rooms or cabins can be reserved for solo occupancy however, there will be an extra cost. Most people share.

Do you get a blanket on a sleeper train?

Not all the time. Though if you have booked a sleeper you will most likely get a proper freshly-made bed with sheets and blankets. However, if you haven’t booked a sleeper bed, but a chair for your overnight travel, I would suggest you take your own blanket on-board.

What is a couchette vs sleeper?

Sleepers and couchettes are different. Sleepers include a bed and usually a private washbasin, towels and bed linen and can accommodate a varying number of passengers. They can be single, double or 3 or 4 person compartments. A couchettes on the other hand are simple overnight accommodation that can sleeps up to six people in bunks.

Are You Ready for Night Train Travel?

Overnight train travel is a very convenient and scenic way to travel. It is important to consider the pros and cons of overnight train travel before taking the plunge and buying your train ticket. I hope this post has helped you decide. I personally choose train travel over flying when I have the time.

Many countries have sleeper cars trains with sleeping compartments. There are sleeper trains in the UK with one of the most popular routes being sleeper trains to Edinburgh from London. Europe is a popular area for sleeper trains too as it has an extensive train system helping you to travel around Europe by train. Plus there are sleeper trains in India and Amtrak sleeper trains in the USA. And I’m looking forward to experiencing sleeper trains in Vietnam and revisiting my favourite overnight train trip so far that in sleeper trains to Scotland again. Have you traveled by overnight train? I’d love to hear in the comments.

Some epic overnight train journeys in the world

The Reunification Express – Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam – 1,726km (1072 miles) takes about 30 hours
The Zephyr – Chicago to San Francisco, USA – 2400 miles 3900km – (2434 miles) takes about 52 hours
Tazara Railway – Kapiri Mposhi to Dar es Salaam, Zambia and Tanzania – 1860km (1155 miles) – takes about 44 hours
Caledonian Sleeper – London to Edinburgh – takes about 6 hours
The Orient Express – London to Venice – 2,740 km (1,700 miles) – takes about 2 days
Indian Pacific – Sydney to Perth, Australia – 4352kms (2704 miles) – takes just over 3 days

My dad worked for an airline, so my family was always heading off on a plane somewhere. Lucky for us, he would get a good discount on our airfares. It’s not the case for me now though, so when I am looking to purchase an airfare, preferably cheap airfare tickets I go the extra mile to plan my budget vacation. Why overpay for flying to my next destination when I could get it cheaper. Saving on my online airline bookings means I can spend the money elsewhere – like on a night out while on holiday. So how do I do it? Well I use these tips and tricks to negotiate searches for airfares to my advantage, and these are the tips and tricks I’m going to share with you now. These help me get cheap airfare tickets, and they can help you too.

Understand the Science Behind Flight Pricing

When airlines are pricing their flights they consider demand, availability, affordability and other factors – things we aren’t privy to. If you are following the pricing of a flight for a few days or longer you will see the price can change daily and even hourly. If you plotted the pricing you may work out when is the best time to get the best flight deal. But who has time to do that? Basically, we don’t care about the science behind flight pricing, if you are like me, you just want to get the best price for cheap airfare tickets. But there are a few tricks you can use to find great flight deals.

Book Flights in Advance

To get the lowest possible air faire, it is a good idea to book your tickets in advance. Some say months in advance. Data Analysis by the Airlines Reporting Corporation shows cheapest cost of airfares is at least a couple of months or around seven to eight weeks or about 50 days in advance. This is often when the airlines have booking offers so they can fill the seats on the planes. As well all know, this is not always possible to book this far in advance. If you do, try to get a flexible airfare that can be changed or cancelled down the track, with no fees, if your plans change. And know the kind of airfare you want – one way, return, round the world, open-jaw, etc.

Book When Airlines Put Flights on Sale

While there are great flight deals to be found all year long, look out for great deals during sale times. Sales times like Black Friday (November), Cyber Monday (November), Boxing Day and End of Year sale times. This is if you are able to plan months in advance! But if you do, you can be rewarded with cheap airfare tickets.

Book Your Flight on a Budget Airline

There are plenty of budget airlines throughout the world offering great deals on flights. This is great news however, many of these budget airlines charge for extras. From baggage fees to air taxes to seat selection – yep, seat selection, there are a host of things that may increase a cheap flight on a budget airline. Know what you want before you book. If you don’t want to pay to check in your luggage, then choose an airline where you don’t have to.

Go Incognito When Researching Flights

If you haven’t used ‘incognito’ mode previously on your devices, it is about time you start. Basically, when you go into incognito mode, your search information is hidden. So when searching for an airfare in incognito mode, your searches are hidden from the airlines. And why do you want your search hidden? Well, airlines employ algorithms to track search results. When the airline or search engine sees your search pattern, they hike the prices. So each time you start a search, but are searching the same thing, the price will go up. To avoid cookies tracking your search, simply use incognito mode. Then, you will always get the original fare – and this should be the cheapest airfare. And this is what you want!

The Day You Make Your Booking Can Make a Big Difference

Again, data analysis and studies by research companies show that booking flights on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday are cheaper. For domestic travel it is suggested you book your airfare on the weekend, while for international airfares, book for on the Tuesday and Wednesday. You will be amazed how by leaving on certain days of the week, you can save hundreds of dollars on an airfare. Then your biggest worry will be what to wear on a plane.

Be Flexible with Airports You Leave From and Arrive At

When you are flexible with the airport you leave from and arrive at you could save yourself a few hundred dollars. Not every city has two or more airports, but many have one main airport and smaller airports. For instance, Melbourne in Australia has the main Tullamarine Airport, then a smaller airport, Avalon Airport. Same with London, it has Heathrow and Gatwick Airports. You can get cheaper flights from Avalon Airport as it is further out and smaller airlines use it. And to keep competition going, they offer cheap flights. Do take into account the travel cost to get to and from the airports as this could influence your choice.

Be Flexible with Your Travel Dates

One of the easiest ways to find a great deal is to be flexible with your travel dates. If you are limited to when you can travel, try to plan as far in advance as possible. This is because it is cheaper to fly on some days rather than others. For instance Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday are the cheapest days to travel with Friday and Sunday being the most expensive. If you can be flexible with your travel dates you could save yourself some serious dough!

Flying at Odd Hours Can Make an Airfare Cheaper

Yep, we’ve all looked at those flights and thought, ‘I can’t get up that early’! Well, if you don’t mind waiting at the airport for a 3am flight, you might get yourself a cheap airfare. Same goes for booking ‘red eye’ flights. You know those ones that leave at 11pm at night and arrive early in the morning. The flights you rarely get sleep on and get off the plane with red eyes. But if you don’t mind doing this for the sake of saving some money and getting a cheap airfare – go for it.

Check on Popular Websites

My final suggestion on getting a cheap flight ticket is to search the airfare and travel booking websites and compare the cost of the flights online. These websites can scan through the airlines airfares online to find you the best deal. And once they do, instead of booking through these third-party websites, it is wise to go directly to the airline for the deal – you could even get the airfare ticket cheaper! Set up alerts with these websites so when an airline releases a round of cheap airfares or is having a sale, you will know about it. My go to airfare search websites include Google Flights, Momondo, Kiwi and Skyscanner.

👉👉👉👉 Check for a cheap flight ticket on Skyscanner here

Travel Hack – Use Points

There are a number of frequent flyer programs and good credit cards offering reward points. The more you use these the more points you build up. When you reach a certain threshold of points you can turn them into free flights or upgrades to a higher class. Your points aren’t usually allowed to be used in conjunction with sales. Even though this is a great concept, you do need to spend a lot to get free flights and upgrades. But many use this travel hack and it is something you could consider to get the best flight deal.

Book a Flight and Accommodation Deal

In many cases if you book your flight and accommodation as a package, it is usually a better deal than booking them separately. These deals may include airport transfers, breakfast included, upgraded room and day tours. There are benefits to booking a holiday package, and what you get for the cost is one of them. Are You Ready to Get Cheap Airfare Tickets?

Are You Ready to Find a Great Flight Deal?

With the combination of the above tips, a strategy in place plus a bit of luck you should be able to find a great flight deal. Sometimes though, you just gotta go no matter the cost! I’d love to hear if you have any other tips or tricks to getting cheap airfare tickets in the comments following.

Kill time at the airport with a coffee while people watching

I do prefer leaving an airport after my flight over arriving at one for a flight. Mainly because when I arrive at the airport I never know how long I might be there for. My flight might be delayed, or worse, cancelled. Or I might have a long layover between flights. Good news is, airports are becoming more than just a place where aircraft take off and land. They are hubs offering services to the passengers passing through them. So whether it be for an hour or 10 hours, turn what could be hours of boredom into some fun with my suggestions on how to kill time at the airport. They will definitely help to make time go faster at the airport no matter if you are flying solo, in a couple, with a group of friends or flying with kids.

What is an Airport?

I was actually asked what is an airport by one of my kids when they were young. They had only seen planes flying in the sky and now we were going to an airport to get on one. Oh the excitement of discovering a new place! An airport is basically a place where aircraft take off and land. Plus, has buildings for maintenance of aircraft, a place for cargo and facilities for passengers to use while waiting for flights. Some are big, and some are small, overall, I always do enjoy leaving one as I don’t always enjoy hanging around trying to fill in time at the airport.

What are the Different Types of Airports?

Yes, there are different types of airports. Military, Reliever (small airports that take the overflow from big airports) and Commercial Airports. Passengers mostly fly in and out of commercial airports after buying an airfare.

What are the Functions of an Airport?

An airport has a number of functions which are provided at different areas.

There will be a runway for aircraft to take off and land on.

Maintenance buildings to maintain the aircraft.

A terminal with facilities for passengers including check-in facilities, baggage drop-off, security clearance, Passport control, waiting areas with restaurants and bathrooms, and gates leading to the aircraft. There are also private areas for those wishing to pay a little more to enjoy a shower, a bed and food.

What Services Do Airports Offer?

The size of the airport will determine what services it offers passengers. Small airports may be one room offering somewhere to sit, a bathroom and maybe a coffee trolley! Some of the largest airports in the world, London’s Heathrow, New York’s JFK and say Singapore’s Changi Airport have so many things on offer you might never want to leave the airport. Services can include bars, restaurants, retail shops, private lounges, sleeping pods, luggage lockers, yoga rooms and even aquariums and museums.

How to Kill Time at the Airport

We all experience different lengths of time at an airport. From waiting for your flight, a layover and those frustrating waits when your aircraft has a mechanical issue or your flight is cancelled. Depending on the time you have at the airport will determine what you will probably do while waiting at the airport. And you don’t have to be bored at the airport if you find an activity or two to occupy your time, particularly if you happen to be travelling with kids and need to keep them entertained. Here are some of the best activities and things to do at the airport to help you pass the time away while waiting for a flight.

1. Grab a Bite to Eat

Top of my list of ways to pass time at the airport is grabbing a bite to eat. I don’t know what it is but I often feel hungry when I get to the airport. Maybe it is because I have been stressed or nervous about the flight beforehand and haven’t eaten. And when I actually get to the airport and have checked in, I get hungry because I’m not so nervous anymore. Lucky for me, most big airports have a variety of food options available from fast food chains to sit down restaurants. So you can enjoy a coffee or meal. I’ve even enjoyed more gourmet foods in some private areas allocated for those willing to pay more via a priority pass or because they are travelling business or first class. Yeah, I collect points too to get upgrades. So grabbing a bite to eat or drink at the airport is a great way to break up the hours spent waiting for your flight at the airport. It’s probably my favourite airport killing time activity.

2. Go to a Bar

Unless you are flying from a very small airport with hardly any facilities, there will be a bar at the airport. I do suggest not drinking before your flight in my post how to get sleep on your plane. But one or two may not hurt too much to help you while away the time while killing time at the airport.

3. Walk Around

When I know I am hopping on a plane for a long-haul flight I like to walk around a lot before I get on the plane. Walking around takes my mind off the flight and I often get on the flight less stressed. It is also helps to keep things moving before sitting on a plane without much movement. It is also good if travelling with kids to use up some of their energy so they may sleep or sit still on the flight.

4. Have a Look at the Shops

All major airports will have shops. Depending on the size of the airport, there could be one variety shop to a couple of hundred shops. I enjoy walking around an airport’s shops as they are a great way to kill time while waiting for my flight. I have purchased last minute items to wear on the plane so I am comfortable to gifts in these stores. Some of the shops can be duty free stores where you can purchase some great products at cheaper prices. Most of all, exploring airport stores can be a fun and FREE way to pass the time.

5. Plane Watch

Plane watching is a great way to kill time at the airport

Yeah, I’m a bit of a plane nerd. I like watching them take off and land. Most airports have a viewing deck where you can watch the plane’s land and take off. It is quite mesmerising. Or set yourself up near a window that has a view of the runway so you can see the planes landing and taking off. And a good game can be trying to recognise the different logos on the plane’s tail to determine where it is from!

6. People Watch

As well as watching the planes land and take off, people watch. You will be amazed at how quickly time will fly by when you people watch at an airport. Let your mind wonder about different people and in your head, make guesses about a person. Why do you think they are travelling? Are they giving any clues away to make you think they are flying to see their family, friends or a lover! Have fun with it – but keep it in your head.

7. Charge Your Devices and Use the Free Wifi

With so many people traveling with electronic items, airports offer power points so you can charge your devices including your own power bank. Most airports offer free wifi throughout their terminals so you can work or scroll social media! Some airports may want you to sign up or register for access. Be careful using free wifi as you can expose your devices to viruses and scammers. Perhaps indulge your favourite Netflix show while you have access to wifi! I’ve always found this a great way to kill time at the airport.

8. Read a Book or Magazine or catch up on your favourite Netflix Show

If you love reading, find a spot at the airport and read to your heart’s content! Maybe read up on your destination.

9. Sleep or Rest

Depending on how long you have to wait for your flight, you may want to catch some zzzz’s. Catching up on sleep is one of the best ways to recharge yourself before your next flight. You have probably seen those people curled up on the floor with their luggage as their pillow! Some airports have comfy chairs while some are offering sleeping pods so you can get some sleep. It can help if you come prepared with a travel pillow and a blanket so you can rest in a nice spot. Don’t forget to set your alarm so you don’t miss your flight!

10. Enjoy the Lounge

If you are lucky enough to be travelling in business or first-class or have purchased a membership to an airport lounge, you could be enjoying the services of the lounge. These lounges, which I like to use when I am travelling long-haul, provide comfy seats, bathrooms to freshen up, free food and dink and some have sleeping areas. Some lounges are exclusive to certain airlines or membership holders. Spending time enjoying a lounge can help you recharge away from the usual hustle and bustle of the main terminal.

11. See What Other Things the Airport has to Entertain You

Singapore Airport’s Rain Vortex – you can watch it for hours to kill time at the airport

Airports aren’t just hubs for travel, many have transformed into cultural spaces. While walking around an airport check out what else the airport has to see. Some airports have some very interesting things indeed. Here’s a few:

Singapore’s Changi Airport has the Rain Vortex, the world’s tallest indoor waterfall.

Qatar’s Hamad International Airport has a 25 metre lap pool.

Munich International Airport (Germany) has an ice rink.

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (Malaysia) has a jungle boardwalk.

Vancouver International Airport (Canada) has an aquarium.

Hong Kong International Airport has an aviation museum.

Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport often has art exhibits featuring local and international artists.

12. Take a Tour of the Airport

Have you ever wanted to discover how an airport is run by seeing behind the scenes? Some airports, such as Zurich Airport, Switzerland offer guided airport tours. You will need to book in advance at the airport website but you may enjoy seeing the baggage sorting system working.

13. Play a Game

One of the best ways to pass the time while waiting for a flight is to play a game. Whether you enjoy solving puzzles, finding words or playing card games, it can help keep your mind occupied and make the wait feel shorter. A great example is Sudoku, a challenging number puzzle game that you can play offline or online. It’s perfect for giving your brain a workout while waiting at the gate.

14. Explore the City Outside of the Airport on a Layover

If you have a stopover or layover at an airport that provides you with enough time to leave the airport, I suggest you go outside to explore the local city. If limited for time, one of the best ways to explore the city is to jump onto a Hop On Hop Off bus. These take you to all the best spots to see and provide a commentary. A full loop usually takes an hour or so and you will see some of the famous landmarks of the city. And you to hop on and off if you want to spend longer at a particular stop (if you have the time). Before leaving the airport, ensure you have the necessary paperwork allowing you to leave the airport. Depending on the country, you might need a visa to leave the airport to explore.

Are You Ready to Kill Time at the Airport?

When you think about it, there are a number of great things you can do and see at an airport. Whether you choose to venture out into the city or choose to rest or explore the airport, there are plenty of ways to make the most of your time at the airport. You just need to give it a little thought of how you can turn a boring experience waiting for a flight into a pleasant and fun one. And with a little pre-planning you will be killing time at the airport in no time. I’d love to hear how you kill time at the airport in the comments following. Do you have any to add to my list?

We’ve all seen them. Those bright coloured, open top buses with loud talking coming from them with people sitting atop them snapping away with their camera! I always thought ‘how embarrassing’ and ‘you won’t catch me on one of those’. But you know what, after going on one, I now swear by them. Going on a hop on hop off city sightseeing tour is the first thing I usually do when I arrive in a new city. So here is why I love Hop On Hop Off Bus Tours and why you should embrace them in your travels too!

It was a cold, wet and grey March day when I arrived in London on my UK working holiday. After checking into my hotel I was off to check out all the best London sites on my bucket list. But it was so darn cold walking in London. It was one of those days when the cold seeps through your shoes and makes your feet cold! Obviously I was wearing the wrong shoes! And then I saw it, the London Hop On Hop Off Bus. But I swallowed my pride and on I jumped, and to my great surprise I enjoyed it. Being driven from site to site, being told some history about the sites, well, I just loved it! And now, any city I go to that has a hop on hop off bus, I go on it.

In this post I’m listing the pros and cons of hop on hop off sightseeing buses as you will get a better insight into why I love hop on hop off bus tours. Whether you have 1 day in a new city or 7 days to spend in a new city or are moving to a new city on a working holiday visa, like I did or a digital nomad visa, let me help you embrace hop on hop off bus tours. There are many advantages of bus tours of a town or city. Get ready to hop on and off with me!

What is a Hop On Hop Off City Sightseeing Bus Tour?

Hop On Hop Off Bus – HoHo, or Jump On Jump Off Bus – JoJo are bus tours that have been around for a while. If you are wondering what is the concept of a hop on hop off bus, it is easy. They are basically buses that have their roof taken off so you can sit in the open air seats on the top level and get a birds eye view of your surroundings. The tours, if done in one go can last a couple of hours, but your ticket allows you to hop on and off at designated spots, usually within a 24 hour period.

These buses are found in major cities. Cities like Sydney, Paris, London, Rome, Barcelona, Toronto and New York City to name a few. And they are a flexible sightseeing tourist bus that takes you to all the highlights of that city.

Pros and Cons of Hop-on Hop-off Bus Tours

If you are wondering, what are the benefits of hop on hop off bus tours, well, there seems to be pros and cons to everything when you travel, and in life. Here are what I think are the pros and cons of riding aboard hop on hop off bus tours.

The Pros of Hop On Hop Off Bus Trips – Reasons Why I love them!

1. Take Me to All the Sights

That’s right. The biggest pro of a hop on hop off bus tour is it takes you to all the top sights of a particular town or city. All the major tourist spots are on the list of visits of the Hop On Hop Off bus. The buses have set routes so I can either sit back and enjoy the whole trip, or get off at one of the stops to explore.

TIP! For your first trip in a new city I suggest you go around the entire route first. While sitting back, relaxing take a mental note of things you would like to come back to. Then on the next trip round, you can begin hopping on and off at the sites you want to see before hopping back on again to the next stop.

2. Short Time Visits

If you have limited time in a city, hop on hop off bus tours help you make the most of your time. Doing a complete circuit usually takes a couple of hours. So if you only have a day, or less in a city, these are great. However, even if staying longer, going on a hop on hop off bus tour will show you the places you can go back to if you have the time.

3. Available in Most Major Cities

Yep. Most big cities have a hop on hop off bus. From Sydney to London to New York and Singapore to name a few. Yep, many cities have a hop-on hop-off bus tour. Plus, some even have a hop-on hop-off river cruise such as the Sydney Harbour Hop on Hop off cruise! Check out my map following.

4. More than Just transport

You can discover the city you are in by local transport however, you will need to firstly do your research so you know how to buy a ticket, what lines to travel on and which train stations or bus stops to get off at. When going on a hop on hop off bus you don’t have to worry about these things as the bus takes you to all the famous sights. I don’t have to do any planning or thinking – it’s done for me! I just have to sit back and relax and enjoy the sights.

5. Don’t Have to Worry About Learning How to Drive in a Foreign Place

When going on hop on hop off bus tours you don’t need to learn how to drive in a foreign place. Also, I don’t need to learn specific rules, worry about getting fuel, finding a parking spot or research a route to follow if I have rented a car. And I don’t get lost while trying to find a place, particularly when travelling solo and I don’t have a navigator.

6. Time Saver

Most jump on jump off bus routes only take a couple of hours to complete if done in the one go making this option much faster when renting a car or using public transport to see the sights. Even though using public transport is a great way to get to know a city, it can be time consuming. As mentioned previously, when you rent a car you need to consider road rules, getting fuel, find parking and research where you will be driving to. Taking the hop on hop off bus is a time saver as it has done everything for me.

7. Affordability

Hop On Hop Off bus tours are affordable. Tickets to ride the hop on hop off sightseeing buses are available for 24 hours. In some cases it can be 48 or even 72 hours. During this time I can hop on and hop off as many times as I like within that time. This definitely is very affordable as my transport costs are covered for the whole time. As a budget conscious traveller, this is definitely one of the biggest pros of going one a hop on and off bus tour.

8. Discounts to Attractions

There are often deals associated with your hop-on hop-off ticket or the ticket may be part of a deal. Having discounts on attractions will help you save money so you can enjoy other things on your holiday, like a meal. For instance, the Dublin Pass allowing entrance fees to some 40+ attractions, but also a ticket on the hop-on hop-off Dublin sightseeing bus. If you want to get the most out of your city tour, research which tour operators are offering deals to the attractions.

9. Fun Facts!

Along with the bus ride comes a commentary. Sometimes a recorded commentary while other times a person providing facts and figures, historical backgrounds, things that happened at a particular place and quirky trivia about the places you are visiting. You can learn lots of fun facts going on a hop-on hop-off tour bus. Facts you may only learn by doing a lot of research. Sometimes I learn more by seeing a place rather than reading about it. This is one of the biggest pros to riding onboard HOHO bus tours.

10. Avoid Getting Lost / Wasting Time

Getting lost can be a fun part of travel (sometimes), however, if you don’t have the time to get lost it can be a waste of time. This is why I love the hop-on hop-off bus because it doesn’t waste my time. I often get my bearings of the city by going on the bus. It has proved useful on many occasions.

The Cons of Hop On Hop Off Bus Trips

There are some cons to riding aboard a hop on hop off bus tour.

The bus may not visit all the tourist destinations you want to visit.

You will have to time your trip around bus arrival and departure times at each stop.

It might be busy and you might struggle to get a seat and need to wait for the next bus.

The weather may not be the best to sit up top.

You will be seen with lots of other tourists on the bus. Unsavoury types may see you get on and get off the bus and may think of you as a tourist to rob – so be security conscious. There are ways how to not look like a tourist as you travel.

TIP! Dress for the weather. Wear sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses when it is warm and sunny. Take an umbrella or rain coat and a warm jacket for colder weather. It can also get a little windy up top – so hold onto your hats!

Living in a van isn’t for everyone, but many are embracing van life

Van life is the king of alternative lifestyles if you ask us. With comfort, adventure, and freedom, you can travel uniquely without breaking the bank. While van life is not the only way to travel with freedom, there are many ways that it stands above the rest. Out of the many great points towards van life, these are the highlights that bring it to the top of our list. Guest Posters Bailey (Aussie) and Denise (Dutchy) of Two with a View elaborate. They have lived in two self-built campervans, each for over a year.

1. Home Away From Home

Van life can provide that homely feeling no matter where you go. When travelling to a hotel or motel, you will always miss something. Travelling with a camper van means your home comes with you. Your wardrobe, bed, kitchen and closet will be right where you park it making a more comfortable experience. Plus, it is much easier to delve into the community from a car park rather than sitting many floors up in a tall building.

2. Freedom

Living in a van can provide an overwhelming amount of freedom. You have a home that can move almost anywhere that the road can take you. Travelling in a camper van will allow you to make any number of choices throughout every single day. You can travel far and wide, carving your way from one town to the next, or simply park up for a longer period. Whether you prefer to be merged into the social scenery or alone amongst nature, you will find the freedom to decide where to stay. If you wish to visit the city, take a hike, or sit peacefully by the coast, you can! For some, this can even become overwhelming, with an uncapped number of choices to be made.

3. Accessibility

When travelling more traditionally, you may be limited in options to stay. With a van, you will find that there are countless options for campsites, both paid and free. While backpacking or hotel/motel stays can be a great experience, you are generally limited to more developed areas. A camper tears down those restrictions when you can get almost anywhere that you want to go. Even in the most remote areas, you will find suitable parking spaces making your destination more accessible.

4. Savings

Van life makes living on a budget easier. A camper is limited in space though it offers a personal hotel, restaurant, and transport in one. When you no longer have to outsource, you’ll be able to travel in style while sticking to your budget.

No longer, will you have space for loads of unnecessary stuff. You will need to become satisfied with less and stop adding more to the collection. A camper should have a kitchen, meaning you can cook your meals to avoid expensive restaurants along the way. There is no need for taxis or car rentals while leaving your hometown. You have your transport while you drive your home around. Of course, there may be some exceptions such as city centres and extremely remote areas. Overall, you will be able to save a lot by becoming more self-sufficient.

5. People

Delving into van life is not for everyone. It can be quite a courageous step, that can allow you to meet new people, that you may not have met otherwise. Being a van dweller will mean you always have something interesting to talk about, especially with other van lifers. Often, the people that you meet on the road have a similar mindset and be on a similar path. This is a good way to strike up a conversation and make new friends. When you are parked at a campsite or cross paths with others, you may receive invitations for dinner, drinks or a nice campfire. This can be a great way to make friends while sharing stories and experiences.

6. Sustainability

Inside Van Life

While living and travelling smaller, you can easily reduce your footprint. If you want to do better for our planet then van life should be high on your list of living and travel options. When you reduce the space that you live in, you will inevitably reduce your environmental impact. Of course, your home is on wheels meaning you’re more inclined to drive often, though this is counteracted in many ways. With less space, you’ll acquire less material stuff, pushing you to be more aware of your possessions and purchases. Energy usage will quickly be reduced when you can efficiently maintain the smaller room’s temperature. Most campers can easily become more self-sufficient, relying on solar and other alternative energies to power their daily needs. This can be a huge point to reduce your environmental footprint.

7. Nature

Van life can be a great escape from the bricks and mortar that we’ve grown to rely on. A chance to get outside and experience nature in full. The confined space of a van will inevitably push you outside more often. You’ll be inclined to leave the door open, to receive the fresh air and feel the extra space. When parking at a campsite, relying on the weather and living your life outdoors more often, you’ll begin to pay attention to the great outdoors. Even if you aren’t looking for nature, van life will make you find it.

8. Mental Peace

The mentality that you find while travelling freely will be a pleasant surprise. It’s always nice to get out of the rush, experience some peace and clear your mind. This is exactly what van life can offer. When you are living on the road, it is much easier to become creative or pursue personal goals. With a bit of time and space, you can focus without the stress of a traditional lifestyle. With this, you may find yourself feeling calmer, sleeping better, and becoming more productive. Van life can create mental peace.

9. Appreciation of the Things You Have

Living smaller makes for a greater appreciation of the things that you have. You are more likely to be aware of your possessions, as well as the experiences that you gain. Van life is minimal, and you are more likely to get outside to feel the sun and sit in the breeze. These are the things that you will grow to appreciate. You’ll be pushed to live with less stuff, which can be a very valuable challenge. Once you are satisfied with less, you can begin to appreciate the important things in life. The people, the relationships, and the experience that you’ve gained.

10. Inspiration

With everything listed above, you’ll be sure to find inspiration. Whether you’re making something, looking for something or trying to change something, this lifestyle will have something to teach you. Through the people you meet, the places you go, and the stories that you hear, you will find inspiration.

Are You Ready for Van Life?

Van life has so much to offer, the way of life, ease of movement, and savings that come naturally. When you get a chance to step out of the mainstream lifestyle, you may find a way to brighten your life with a clearer mind and a greater connection to nature.

It was by accident, or really lack of planning, that I first slept in my car overnight. It was while I was on a road trip driving in Australia from Melbourne to Sydney. What I discovered that night is I am not alone when it comes to sleeping in my car or tent camping for that matter. I saw a number of other people doing it too. And they are not just sleeping in their car overnight either, they are car camping. Yep, car camping, sleeping in their car. So if you are heading off on a road trip, weekend getaway or even a longer trip, here’s how you can go car camping or sleeping in your car to save money on accommodation costs.

Firstly, My Story of How It Happened

The drive is usually 11 hours between Melbourne and Sydney, but on this occasion I deviated from the main road to do some sightseeing. As afternoon came and went, I was no where near where I needed to be. So, after having dinner, I decided I couldn’t drive any more and began to look for accommodation for the night. I’ve driven the Hume Highway linking Sydney to Melbourne many times and usually I can drive into a town and find a room in a motel. But not this night.

Australia was out of covid lockdowns and everyone was travelling. And I mean, everyone. Everywhere I went had a ‘No Vacancy’ sign. Even the caravan park was overflowing.

Not sure what to do, I went to the service centre on the highway and had a cup of coffee in McDonalds. I noticed there were a number of trucks and cars parked. This is when I got the idea to sleep in my car – well I actually had no choice. There was no accommodation available.

Scouring the parking area I found a spot to park my car. I locked the doors, laid the driver’s seat back, threw a blanket over me and dozed off. I woke a few times during the night from the noise and the light as other vehicles arrived at the service centre to get fuel. I didn’t realise how many people travel during the night.

I woke early, around 6am and reflected on the night sleeping in my car. It occurred to me I could sleep in my car to save on accommodation costs when I travel. And I thought, with more planning and a little bit of travel gear I could sleep in my car and be comfortable and safe. This would save me having to pay for accommodation. I was paying around $120+ per night for a cheap motel. But it occurred to me the money I could save would probably pay for 3 meals per day. And possibly an entrance fee to a museum and probably lots of other things that were running through my mind.

Call it what you will – living in your car or car camping as I prefer. So here are my best tips and tricks on how you can sleep in your car to save money on accommodation costs.

Pros and Cons to Sleeping In Your Car

Pros of Car Camping

I think there is only one pro of sleeping in your car, and that is it will save you on accommodation costs. It can save you heaps if you are travelling on a tight budget. The money you save can then be spent elsewhere or even allow you to travel for longer. Sounds good so far!

Cons of Car Camping

The biggest disadvantage to sleeping in your car is that it isn’t that comfortable.

Car camping can be scary when you aren’t use to it and,

It isn’t that private either.

The best way I have found to overcome the disadvantages of car camping is to be prepared for sleeping in your car. When you are prepared and have the right set-up, it can be a wonderful and enjoyable experience.

How to Prepare for Spending a Night in Your Car

My biggest tip for sleeping in your car is to be prepared for it. I wasn’t prepared for my first time, but I am now. Before any road trip and before I do some quick car checks I think about whether I need to spend the night in my car or will book accommodation. If I decide to sleep in my car I am sure I am ready by packing some essential items. I have got and keep getting a lot of my travel gear from Amazon, large retail outlets outdoor specialist stores such as Anaconda and Outback Equipment. All the items I mention following I have used during my car camping and they have come in very useful.

What Part of the Car Should You Sleep In?

Before I went to sleep in my car, I considered the best part of the car to sleep. At the time I had an Audi a4 – not your typical car camping car!

My Audi a4 is a sedan car, so I was limited. Should I lay across the back seat? Maybe sleep in the passenger seat so I had more leg room without a steering wheel? Should I see if the back seats fold down opening up the boot (trunk) of the car? However, the best place I decided to sleep was in the driver’s seat. I chose this for safety reasons thinking if anyone tried to get into the car while I was inside, I could easily start the engine and drive off. Thankfully, this didn’t happen and in the future I still think I will sleep in the driver’s seat. But the choice is yours as to where you choose to sleep. If you prefer to sleep across the back seat you might want to invest in a mattress, such as these.

Since writing this post, I have sold my Audi a4 and now car camp in my Suburu Forrester SUV.

Car mattress front seat bed
Mattress for the back seat

How to Make Your Car Safe and Private

I don’t think you can make your car more safe than locking the doors. For privacy though, you have more options. You could hang curtains along the windows or buy specific shades for the windows. However, having tinted windows, the darker the better, is a great privacy option. Having tinted windows can also help keep your car cool on a hot day and warmer on a cold night. I would only do these things if you are planning to sleep in your car regularly or live in it.

In my case, I only sleep in my car on long road trips. Like I said, it is a long 11 hour drive from Melbourne to Sydney and I often don’t make it in the one go which is why I sleep in the car to save on accommodation costs.

Making Yourself Comfortable in the Front Seat

It was going to be a cool night for my night in the car so I put on some leggings and sox – and I’m glad I did, because my feet got cold and I wish I had thicker sox. I put the keys in the console so I could easily reach them. I wound down the back passenger window by 1cm (half an inch) so there was a little air getting into the car – thank goodness it wasn’t raining! I reclined the seat as far as it would go. Surprising, my driver’s seat in my Audi A4 reclined a long way and I was almost flat. I then had my pillow to lay my head on and I had my blanket over me to keep me warm. I also had a hoodie on and I strategically moved it over my face which helped to block out the light. I adapted what I could to ensure I was warm and comfortable.

How to Choose the Right Spot to Park?

The biggest question that I have found when sleeping in a car overnight is finding somewhere safe to park the car. People call this type of car camping, stealth camping or boondocking. Basically, these terms mean to park up your car without anyone knowing you are actually there.

I drove around for a while trying to find somewhere that looked safe. I drove along residential streets, near parks, down the main street of the town and had a look at shopping centre car parks. Here are the safest and most convenient places I have found to sleep in my car overnight.

Truck Stops / Service Centres

If you are driving along a major highway, like I was, I found a truck stop or service centre were great to sleep at. At the particular service centre I stopped at there was a petrol (fuel) station, a McDonalds Restaurant as well as a KFC and there were public toilets plus loads of car spots. I parked up not directly under a light but near a light. There were a few cars around which I think belonged to workers. I felt quite safe parking here. It did get a bit noisy at times with the cars and trucks stopping to get fuel.

Highway Rest Stops

Highway rest stops are my second choice to sleep in my car overnight at. Although a little on the dark side, there is access to toilets and mostly there are lights. I have mostly slept in rest stops during the day when I need to as I prefer a truck stop or service centre as there are more people around.

Residential Street

The third place I would suggest to park your car up for the night is in a residential street. I do prefer if the house I stop in front of has a high fence or a tree in front because it makes me feel more comfortable that the home owner won’t call the Police. I usually wait until it is dark before parking in a residential street as it will be less likely residents will be looking outside at that time.

Other Places to Park Your Car to Sleep Overnight

I haven’t tried these myself (yet) but other places to park are in supermarket car parks, park and rides and places that have activity. I think when choosing where to park, you need to consider your safety first. You want to feel comfortable (and safe) in your car so you can actually sleep. Also consider Free Camps. There are a number of apps available such as Wikicamps that can advise you where the nearest free camping area is. These areas will mostly have others, sleeping in their cars, vans and tents.

TIP: Evaluate each place before you park up for the night. Ensure you feel comfortable, private and safe in the place you choose. Be sure to check if there are any signs about ‘no overnight parking’ before you hunker down for the night.

Places I would not Park my Car to Sleep in Overnight

I would not park at dark public parks or in national parks, unless there was lighting and other cars around. I wouldn’t go off-road either as it may look suspicious.

What About Going to the Toilet?

Guys have an advantage here, they can use an empty bottle to pee in without having to get out of the car. Don’t forget to put the lid on the bottle as you don’t want any urine spilling throughout the car!

Girls, well – it’s not fair really but what can we do. This is why I like to park where I know I can access a toilet if I need to. What I did though my first night sleeping in my car was not drink anything after 6pm. Then I went to the toilet and emptied the bladder. These two things helped me get through the night without needing to go until morning. I have heard some girls wear special leakage pants that they dispose of in the morning. Others use a sheewee and a bottle. I haven’t tried a sheewee myself, but I hear they work wonders! Check out these sheewees.

What about Showering When Sleeping in Your Car?

Personal hygiene needs to be attended to know matter where you are living. If you don’t have access to a shower you can wash in a hand basin with a wash cloth and dry yourself with a towel. I have found some public toilets have a shower, particularly those at beaches. You may be able to join a gym that has many branches in a particular country and use the showering facilities. Also consider travelling with wipes. These handy things are great for personal hygiene and clean yourself after spills.
Cooking While Car Camping

Cooking healthy meals while camping in your car will help you stay healthy plus, meals are often cheaper to make than buying them pre-made. I now travel with a small gas stove and some cooking gear – a frypan, saucepan and cooking utensils. Then I have a plate, bowl, knife, fork and spoon and a collapsable chopping board and wash basin for washing up.

Car Camping with Pets

I love car camping solo, but I also enjoy car camping with other people and pets. So if you are car camping with your favourite four-legged friend or friends, you need to do some planning and research. Firstly, ensure where you are camping is pet-friendly so you know if there are any rules and regulations you need to adhere to. Next ensure you have a leash for your pet as some places may require you best friend or friends be tied up and with you at all times. Plus you can take them on hikes. I travel with a small playpen to keep my puppy near. And don’t forget your pet’s bedding and their food and water bowls and take enough food and water for them for the length of your camping time.
Are You Ready to Sleep in Your Car to Save Money on Accommodation?

As I said, it was purely an accident the first time I slept in my car. What I realised though, that if I do, I can save loads of money on accommodation costs as I travel. And having done it a few times now, I am learning each time extra things I can do to make my night more enjoyable and restful. Now as you know, the cost of accommodation is the most expensive part of our travels because we need to sleep somewhere. So if you are looking to reduce your accommodation costs, consider sleeping in your car as an option. If you do this already, I would love to hear from you in the comments following. If you have any questions don’t hesitate ask away in the comments section also.
