Best Time to Visit California

Anytime is a good time to visit California as you can visit it year-round. Though, the weather might play a large part in activities you might undertake while visiting this US state. But if only visiting for a weekend or have your holiday at a certain time, then these things can govern when you visit.

The California summer months of June, July, August are some of the best months to enjoy California. The weather is hot and with plenty of sunshine you can visit all the popular attractions. Many places, such as the theme parks are open longer also. But be prepared to enjoy everything with plenty of other visitors. Though I find it a little hot to do some things like hiking in the national parks. I prefer to do this during the more pleasant weather of the Spring (March, April, May) and Fall (Autumn) (September, October November) months. But there is still plenty to see and do in California during the winter months of December, January, February when the weather can be cool.

How to Get around California?

If you don’t have a car to get around California, don’t worry, you can hire one. Otherwise, one of the best ways to get around California is by bus. Most counties in California has its own local bus line making it easy to get to places you want to see. The train network isn’t as widespread as it is in some countries, such as in Europe, but there are some great train trips you can take to get you around California. One, the Coast Starlight train is the first submission of things to see and do in California. Otherwise, there are plenty of airports dotted around the state with planes that will fly you to where you want to go.

Note: Places on this list are in alphabetical order and not in any order of preference. We are kicking off with a train trip that takes in many places in California.

Amtraks Coast Starlight Train

When I visited California, I was eager for a road trip adventure, but the prospect of driving in a foreign country was daunting. The solution? A train trip along the West Coast.

The Coast Starlight, a long-distance passenger train operated by Amtrak, traverses the scenic western coastline of the United States. The entire journey, depending on conditions, takes about 35 hours. While the train offers basic seats and simple meals, passengers can also upgrade to roomettes and enjoy more elaborate dining options. Its name, “Starlight,” is a nod to the Southern Pacific Railroad’s “Daylight” trains that once covered part of this route.

Running between Seattle, Washington, and Los Angeles, with about 28 stops in all, the Coast Starlight covers 1,377 miles (2,216 kilometres) and offers breathtaking views of the Cascade Range, Mount Shasta, the California Central Valley, the Pacific Ocean, and the Santa Barbara coastline. The train journey is truly unforgettable, especially in summer, when you can see families enjoying the beach and feel like part of their group. I took it more for the experience of the journey itself than to reach a destination.

Pro tips: Take the upper berth on the left side of the train’s direction of travel for ocean views. Go early to occupy a seat in the train’s Sightseer Lounge.

Big Sur, CA

With its dramatic coastline and breathtaking landscapes, Big Sur is a must-visit destination for first-time visitors to California, especially those who love the great outdoors! Stretching along the scenic Highway 1, visitors will find a perfect blend of rugged natural beauty, outdoor adventure, and small towns — a great place to escape big city life.

One of the biggest draws to visiting Big Sur is experiencing the dramatic coastline. It includes iconic spots like Bixby Creek Bridge, one of the most photographed bridges in California, and McWay Falls, an 80-foot waterfall that cascades directly onto a pristine beach. The coastline has also been featured in plenty of movies and TV shows — it’s a celebrity all on its own!

For nature lovers, Big Sur offers plenty of hiking opportunities. To enjoy beautiful coastal views and possibly catch a glimpse of migrating whales and sea lions, head to Point Lobos Park. The park offers multiple trails that range from under a mile to three miles. Another great spot with longer trails is Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. In addition to hiking, the park also offers a campground, which is a great place to take a break.

Big Sur is a 90-mile stretch along Highway 1, starting at Carmel and ending in San Simeon. You can do the whole drive in one day, but it’s not recommended. It’s better to break the trip over a few days so you have time to stop and explore.

Hearst Castle, CA

Hearst Castle is one of the best places to visit in California. It reminds visitors of the state’s old Hollywood history. And is one of the few castles in the state, making it a must-see for first-time visitors.

Located above San Simeon, CA, it overlooks the Pacific Ocean near Paso Robles. This is one of California’s premiere wine producers. Surrounded by an enchanting landscape of rolling green hills, it makes its nickname obvious: “La Cuesta Encantada,” Spanish for “The Enchanted Hill.”

It was created as a residence for newspaper titan William Randolph Hearst. He was not only extremely wealthy but also friends and host to some of the most notable names of his time. They included Charlie Chaplin, Cary Grant, the Marx Brothers, Jean Harlow, Clark Gable, Winston Churchill, and Charles Lindbergh.

The castle consists of a main twin-towered building, three guesthouses, and 127 acres of gardens, fountains, and pools. Even though the Hearst family still visits, it is no longer a primary home but a California State Park open to visitors.

One of its most famous features is its pools. Modelled after ancient Roman baths, the Neptune and Roman Pools are gorgeous. His library is also astonishing. Most of his collection being first editions, often signed—some of them by Charles Dickens, his favorite author.

All of this you can see when visiting Hearst Castle. I advise you to do some research beforehand as they offer several tours focusing on different features of the estate. Such as the Grand Rooms Tour, Upstairs Suites Tour, Designing the Dream Tour, Hearst and Hollywood Tour, and more. I advise taking at least two tours. This way, you can get a good feel for the castle. Hearst Castle tours range from about 60 minutes to 2 hours, so a visit can fill at least half a day.

Before your tour, I recommend watching the 40-minute film ‘Hearst Castle: Building the Dream’ for a comprehensive overview of the castle’s construction. A bus takes you from the visitor center to the castle. Arrive early for your scheduled tour to ensure you make the bus.

Laguna Beach, CA

Beautiful beach options are abundant in Laguna with over 60 coves and beaches. Highlights include Treasure Island Beach, which is tucked behind the Montage Laguna Beach resort. It can be accessed by walking down a path that offers gorgeous views everywhere you look. Thousand Steps Beach is also worth a stop for its stunning views. Victoria Beach also uniquely has its own pirate tower, making it a popular photography spot.

When you’ve tired of the beach, the town itself is picturesque and quaint. There’s lots of art galleries, shops, wineries, and restaurants throughout. Stop at Laguna Art Museum, which features several exhibitions centering Californian art. And ride the free trolley to get around the town — it even will take you down south to neighboring Dana Point if you want to explore beyond Laguna.

Depending on when you visit, Laguna Beach also hosts a number of festivals and events throughout the year. These include Pageant of The Masters, a unique tableaux vivant (living pictures) experience, and Sawdust Art Festival, a giant event showcasing art and craftsmanship from local artists.

It’s impossible not to fall in love with California after a visit to Laguna. This beach town is well worth a stop on any California itinerary.

Los Angeles, CA

Los Angeles in California is often thought of as being the capital city of California, but the capital is actually Sacramento. But Los Angeles is a capital city, a capital city of fun. Yep, Los Angeles offers visitors lots of theme parks, relaxing beaches, great shopping and is home to Hollywood and plenty of stars. 

Two of the best places to visit in Los Angeles for first time visitors is Disneyland and Universal Studios. Followed by the Stars Walk of Fame and everyone wants to see the Hollywood sign. And perhaps spend a day at the beach then enjoy activities on Santa Monica Pier.

One of the best way to see Los Angeles, particularly if it is your first visit to the city, is to jump on the Los Angeles Hop on Hop off bus. I know, I know, it is very touristy, but it will take you to all the best places in LA to see. I always do the full loop first and then I know which places I want visit in length.

Los Olivos, CA

Los Olivos, in California’s Santa Ynez Valley, is a small town with rustic elegance and small-town warmth. It has been drawing visitors looking to relax and recharge. Known for wine tasting, superb food, and its local art scene, Los Olivos is a popular alternative to a weekend away in Santa Barbara.

While in Los Olivos, you might go wine tasting at the local vineyards. Or, explore the Foxen Canyon Wine Trail, which includes over fifteen wineries and tasting rooms. The 30-mile wine trail extends from Los Olivos to Santa Maria, offering a diverse selection of highly regarded wineries.

In Southern California, there is a city with beautiful sandy beaches and picturesque palm trees; no, it’s not L.A. San Diego perfectly balances a busy city and a laid-back beach town. Besides beaches, it’s known for its delicious Mexican, Asian, and Italian food. There are also many universities in San Diego, so you know there are fun things to do in town.

If it’s your first time in San Diego, go sightseeing at Balboa Park, a stunning historic cultural park and one of the oldest reserves in the U.S. Then, relax at one of the many beaches it offers, with a favorite being La Jolla Cove. If you’re lucky, you might be able to see the bioluminescence in the water! Then, you can’t leave S.D. without topping by Bobboi Gelato, one of the most famous gelato shops that serve freshly made gelato with fresh and fun flavors.

San Francisco is one of the most iconic and worldly-famous towns in California, and in the United-States in general. Located on the Pacific coast, it’s located in the mid-north of the state of California.

This city stands out for its many attributes. First, its location between the ocean and San Francisco Bay is extraordinary. The city is surrounded by water on all sides except south!

Secondly, it’s very hilly, built both on the seashore and on the heights. This makes for beautiful vistas, steep streets and an old tramway that’s particularly popular with visitors.

One street that might be just as popular as the DUMBO Manhattan Bridge view in New York City, is Lombard street. It’s so steep that you get the impression that the houses aren’t stable and that the cars are going to tip over.

Last but not least, when visiting it, you feel like you’ve already been there because it is pictured in many movies. From the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, Pier 39 and its thousands of sea lions, Alcatraz Island and its old prison…

By the way, you can actually visit the Alcatraz prison through a boat tour departing in San Francisco. The city is big enough to spend a few days to a week there without getting bored.

If it’s your first time in California or if you’re just looking for a romantic road trip, you’ve got to check out Temecula. It’s this quaint little town tucked between LA and San Diego, and it’s got such a great vibe.

The big draw here is the wine country. Imagine rolling hills covered in vineyards, with more than 40 wineries to choose from. Whether you’re into wine or just want to chill in the countryside, places like Wilson Creek or South Coast Winery are perfect for a tasting.

But Temecula isn’t just about the wine. You’ll want to spend some time in Old Town Temecula too. It has an awesome mix of old-school charm with 1800s buildings, quirky shops, and great spots to eat. It’s the kind of place where you can wander around, find something unique in a little boutique, and then grab a bite at a local restaurant.

And if you’re up for something really special, try a hot air balloon ride at sunrise. Floating over the vineyards with the morning light—seriously, it’s unreal.

Temecula is a great place to get a taste of California. With its laid-back, small-town feel, it’s an essential stop on any first trip to California because of the various things to do in this beautiful countryside. Plus, it’s close enough to the coast that you can easily pair it with a beach day, making it a versatile addition to your travel plans.

Yosemite National Park

Yosemite is a beautiful natural park that draws millions of visitors each year and is one of the famous landmarks in California. May to September are the most popular months to visit Yosemite. Valleys, waterfalls, giant Sequoia trees, hiking trails, Yosemite has it all. It is a major attraction for any first-time visitor to the west coast of the USA.

Some of the best experiences to be had at Yosemite national park include a visit to the Glacier Point. This has stunning vistas and the view of the Half Dome without any hiking whatsoever. You can enjoy the Lower Yosemite Falls, another popular spot. There are several hiking trails in this national park for outdoor lovers. Sentinel Dome hike is an easy hike with great views of the Half Dome and El Capitan. You can visit Mariposa Grove for the giant sequoia trees.

I would recommend driving down to Yosemite with your own car. It will give you flexibility to cover the large area of the park. You need to plan ahead as to where to stay inside the park and what spots / trails to cover. There are a few hotels that get booked much in advance. If you are going with a group of friends / family, I recommend booking a mountain lodge or cabin within the park on VRBO. These are spacious and more budget friendly.

Chinaman’s Hat Island – one of the islands you will see on a 1 day Oahu circle island tour

If you are visiting the Hawaiian island of Oahu for the first time, one of the best things to do is to go on a 1 day Oahu circle island tour. Why? Because you will get a really good insight and taste of the main island of Hawaii. 

In this post I am taking you on a road trip around Oahu in one day. Starting in Waikiki, which is where most stay, then heading around the island taking in historical, scenic and cultural sights like Diamond Head, Sunset Beach, Pali Lookout, Dole Plantation, Chinaman’s Hat plus Hanauma Bay to mention a few stops. But there are so many more to discover when circling Oahu on a day trip.

I have been very lucky enough to have visited Oahu some fifteen times, well actually, I’ve lost count how many times I’ve been. I just love Hawaii and I usually stay a minimum of 7 days on Oahu. And I’ve been around the island a number of times, sometimes in a day and other times a few days. So without further ado, let’s go on an Oahu circle island road trip tour.

The first time I visited Oahu was with my parents and we went on a small bus tour around Oahu. On other visits I have hired a car and driven to the best places to see and do on Oahu. Check out the map that shows you where on the island the main places to visit are.

Best Things to See and Do on a Circle Island Tour

There are many things to see and do on a road trip around Oahu, when booking a tour or driving around Oahu yourself, the following are some of the best places to stop at.

Nu’uanu Pali Lookout

First stop on this circle island road trip of Oahu could be the Nu’uanu Pali Lookout. Located a short 5-mile drive from Honolulu and Waikiki this lookout has some of the best views over Oahu. It is extremely windy here at the lookout. The wind can literally knock you off your feet so hold on to your hat.

Aside from the fantastic views and the wind, this is the site of one of King Kamehameha’s most gruesome victories. King Kamehameha was the king who united the Hawaiian Islands in 1795. I was told that it is windy because Kamehameha’s army pushed the opposition to the edge of the cliff faces. He told them if they didn’t join him they would be killed. Many of them jumped to their deaths causing the wind. About 100 years later around 500 human skulls were found at the base of the mountain.

Diamond Head

You could include a visit to Diamond Head crater in your trip around the island of Oahu. Or you could visit it as another half or full-day trip from Honolulu. Many people like to walk or run to the top of the crater for fabulous views over Waikiki Beach and Honolulu. 

Hanauma Bay

From the Diamond Head lookout head to Hanauma Bay. It is only a quick stop here to see how beautiful this bay is. You could visit here to where you could snorkel and swim with some 400 species of sea life that live in the reef there. It is only a quick stop here , if you stop at all, because I have a day allocated to spend at this beautiful spot on day 5 of this 7 day Hawaiian itinerary.

Kualoa Ranch

From Hanauma Bay you will drive around some beautiful coastal scenery with beautiful beaches and small islands off the coast such as Chinaman’s Hat. You may have seen this island in TV shows made in Hawaii such as Magnum PI and Hawaii Five-O.

Not too far from Chinaman’s Hat island is Kualoa Ranch. You may recognise this 4,000 acre nature retreat as it has been used as the location in a number of some 200 or so Hollywood films, including Jurassic Park. You can stop here and travel around in ATVs, go zip lining and have a tour of the Hollywood film locations. I’d budget to spend a few hours here as the Hollywood film locations tour goes for 90 minutes.

Polynesian Cultural Center

One of my favourite stops when driving around the island of Oahu is the next stop, the Polynesian Cultural Center. The Polynesian Cultural Center is a Polynesian-themed theme park. Here you can discover how Polynesian people from six different island nations, arrived in the Hawaiian Islands. Walk around and discover lands of Tonga, Tahiti, Samoa, Aotearoa, Fiji and Hawaii. Play ancient games, learn to dance and how to fish without a net – all great skills to have! I love visiting here because I love all the dancing and discovering new cultures.

The Polynesian Cultural Center is also known for its fabulous luaus. Held at night, so you may need to come back on another tour, you would be treated to Polynesian food and culture.

Turtle Bay Resort

Although there are plenty of places to stop for some lunch as you travel around Oahu on your 1 day road trip, you could spoil yourself with a smorgasbord at the Turtle Bay Resort. On my first trip around Oahu we stopped here for lunch and it was fabulous.

On one of my visits to Oahu, I came and stayed at this fabulous resort and spend more time on this side of the island. If you are interested to stay on this part of the island, this resort could just be the place. Check out rates and availability here. 

North Shore

Surfing enthusiasts will love visiting the Oahu’s North Shore. Home to some famous surfing spots such as Sunset Beach, Banzai Pipeline and Waimea Beach. See what all the fuss is about and if time, have a surf yourself.

You could head in to the Waimea Valley and walk through a Hawaiian botanical garden of cultural and archaeological significance to visit the beautiful Waimea Waterfall where you could swim in the fresh water. 

Dole Plantation

There are a number of pineapple plantations you could visit on your tour around Oahu, including one of the most popular, Dole Plantation. You may remember one of Elvis Presley’s movies was set on a pineapple plantation in Hawaii! Learn how they grow the pineapples and try some of their products. I had a meal in the restaurant here one time – I think it was a chicken and pineapple dish!

How to Get around Oahu

The best way to get around Oahu is to go on an organised tour around the island or by renting a car and driving yourself. I have done both and enjoyed both. Though coming from Australia, I did find it tricky driving on the right side of the road! If you want to rent a car, check out DiscoverCars where you can compare vehicles and book. If you would prefer to go on an organised tour of Oahu, there are plenty on offer to choose and I have mentioned some of them at the end of this post.

What to Take on your 1 day tour around Oahu

Depending on the weather which will most likely be nice and warm wear suitable clothing for the day including:

• Comfortable shoes
• Appropriate clothing + dry clothes if swimming so you aren’t sitting in wet clothes on the bus from the clothes you have packed for your beach holiday
• Swimwear and a towel if your tour includes time to swim
• Snorkelling gear if your tour includes time to snorkel
• Reef-safe sunscreen
• Snacks and a bottle of water – though there will be plenty of opportunities to purchase these and your tour will probably include lunch.

I’d wait impatiently for it to start to see what we would be seeing that night and when the Disney music began I was glued to the TV screen. 

I grew up watching some of the best Disney cartoons – Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and those pesky wabbits! And now Belle and Elsa! The show would always end with fireworks over the Disney castle, and oh how I dreamt to see it for real one day!

Finally, as a teenager, I made it to Disneyland for real with my family. As does any family on a visit to Los Angeles. Since that initial visit, I have visited Disney California a couple more times. Plus, I’ve been to other Disneyland’s around the world, notably Disneyland Tokyo and Disneyland Paris. I just love it every time, anywhere! 

Since my first visit to Disneyland Anaheim, Disneyland has grown. It is now called Disneyland Resort and is home now to two theme parks (Disneyland Park – the original Disneyland that I went to, and Disney California Adventure Park), three hotels and an entertainment district known as Downtown Disney with shops and restaurants. Wow! 

So how do you fit visiting 2 theme parks, eating and shopping into one day? Well, frankly, you need to be super organised with a Disneyland plan. Or you could increase your visit to a 2 day visit to Disneyland or longer.

If you only have one day to spend at Disneyland with or without kids, I would suggest you visit the original Disneyland Park as it has plenty of things to see and do to keep you occupied for a full day – but that is up to you! But people short of time often purchase a park hopper ticket that allows them to move between the two parks. More on that later in this post.

Now Disneyland Resort, as just explained is very big with plenty to see and do. The way to make the most of your Disneyland day is to plan it. In this Disneyland guide, I will explain how you can spend a day at Disneyland Resort, with or without kids in this Disneyland planner. I will cover the lands, rides, where to eat and how to get to Disneyland plus, where to stay near to Disneyland Resort to maximise your time.

What is Disneyland Resort in Anaheim?

Disneyland was the brainchild of Walt Disney. And who is Walt Disney you ask? Well he was a cartoonist who created the likes of Mickey Mouse. He had a dream to create a tourist attraction to compliment his cartoon studio. It is said he got the concept by watching his daughters ride on a merry-go-round in Griffith Park in Los Angeles. While watching them he came up with the idea of a place where children and adults could have fun together. The original idea for Disneyland was to be a small play park with themed areas based on many of the cartoon characters.

When was Disneyland Opened?

Disneyland in Anaheim, California was the first ever Disneyland and was opened in 1955 with this dedication:

Organise your Disneyland trip

To help organise and navigate Disneyland consider the following before purchasing your ticket.

To spend the best day ever at Disneyland, here’s the process I suggest you follow to efficiently plan a Disneyland trip.

• Know what lands, rides and entertainment are in Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park and who they best suit.
• Have a map showing where the lands and rides are.
• Use the Genie Pass to book your rides you want to speed up the queue.
• Know where to eat.
• Stay in accommodation close to Disneyland resort Anaheim to maximise your time during your Disneyland itinerary.

How Long Should You Spend at Disneyland

Many international tourists only have one day at Disneyland, and yes, you can see a lot, as long as you are very organised and plan your Disney visit in advance. If you are able, two days at Disneyland Resort would be ideal. That way you can visit both Disney Park and Disney California Adventure Park comfortably. But if 1 day at Disneyland Resort is all you have, then one day it is!

Where is Disneyland? And how to get there?

Disneyland is a 160-acre (75 ha) site found in Anaheim, California which is roughly 26 miles (41 km) from Los Angeles. You can get to Disneyland by car, bus or train however, I stayed at Disneyland Hotel so I could walk to the parks to maximise my time I had to spend at Disneyland. I did this because, not being a local, it was going to take almost 2 hours to get there by public transport and I didn’t want to get up really early with jet lag and all!

Where to Stay near Disneyland

Staying at a hotel close to Disneyland Resort will help you benefit to get to the theme parks for opening time without having to spend a couple of hours travelling beforehand. This will help keep your stamina for the day. You can also utilise early entry. Disney has 3 Disneyland hotels, all Disney themed nearby. What a buzz to totally immerse yourself with all things Disney when staying at one of these hotels.

• Disneyland Hotel – an easy walk to Disneyland or catch the monorail.
• Disneyland’s Grand Californian – has its own entrance via the Hotel’s entry gate to the park.
• Disney’s Pixar Hotel – guests use a walkway across the street from the hotel to enter the theme park.

When is the Best Time to Visit Disneyland?

Anytime is a good time to visit Disneyland as it is open all year round. And it is often crowded every day. But it is especially crowded, with long waiting times for rides during the summer months, on weekends and during school holidays. I have been in May and November and it was crowded both times – and I didn’t have to wait too long to get on a ride.

You may want to take into account for your 1 day at Disneyland plans that Los Angeles is very hot during the summer months. Walking around Disneyland in the heat can be exhausting and can dampen your enthusiasm. But there are plenty of places you can go into to enjoy the air conditioning.

Prep Before Your Day in Disneyland

Before you even get to the park, you have your work cut out for. Probably not something you want to hear if you are on holiday in Los Angeles, but the more you prep, the better your first time at Disneyland day will be. Now you considered, the weather, where to stay and how to get there, now it’s time to know what things you can see and do in Disneyland so you can choose what to see and how you will spend your 1 day in Disneyland.

What is There to Do at Disneyland?

There are many things to do in Disneyland. There are amusement rides, shops, themed lands, restaurants and street food stalls. You will most likely want to choose the appropriate lands and rides.

If you visit the official Disneyland website, you can filter lists of the lands and rides to appropriate age level. This will help you decide what to see and do in Disneyland if you are visiting Disneyland with kids of different ages. Also, there are height restrictions on some rides, so you can check that out also. The filters also advise if the ride is long, short, slow, fast or loud.

So consider who you are visiting the park with. A day in Disneyland with kids can be a much different day with adults. Only you know whether you will need to slow down while someone has a sleep in their pram or not!

The ages of those you are visiting with can influence where you will go in the park and what rides you will go on – and there’s nothing wrong with that at all. So riding on Dumbo may not be a priority of your teens. And your young kids may not want to go on the big thrill rides like Indiana Jones and Space Mountain.

My biggest tip is to priorities your Disneyland day with things you want to see and do but also keep it flexible, as it is easy while walking around that something else will grab your attention.

Yeah, yeah, I’ve said it before, but you will have a better day if you know what you want to see rather than wondering around the parks!

Now to make your park reservations and buy your ticket.

Buying Tickets – Costs, Reservations and Extras

Gone are the days when you could rock up to the entrance, buy a ticket and you were in. Now you need park reservations and buy your ticket in advance.

Making your reservation and buying your ticket is very easy. Simply follow the procedure on the Disney website to make your reservation and buy your ticket/s. Click here 

1. Start on this page: select ticket to purchase or select make or modify ticket (if you already have a ticket).
2. Select Ticket, number of days, number of tickets and which park. You can visit one park only or choose park hopper.
3. Choose the day and select the park.
4. Add Genie and Parking.
5. Taken to your cart to check what you are purchasing, then purchase after creating an account.
6. Voila – you have a ticket.

To Genie, Genie+ or Not to Genie+

Genie service is the free in-app planner that helps you plan your Disneyland day.

Genie+ on the other hand is a paid reservation system for accessing shorter queues known as Lightning Lanes. So while in the Lightning Lane, if you pay for the service, you pay for shorter waits. If you are visiting Disneyland on the weekend, when it is busiest or there is a ride you are desperate to be on, paying to shorten you wait time can help you maximise your time, so you don’t miss out on seeing and doing everything you want to see and do in Disneyland. Particularly, when you only have a day to spend in Disneyland. Now you can only make a reservation when you enter the park. If you are on the fence about adding Genie+ to your ticket price, you can add it on the day you visit.

Download the Disneyland App. Once you have your ticket and all the extras you’ve opted for, add it, and everyone’s ticket you are travelling with to the Disneyland App. The app lets you scan your tickets, allows you to make Genie+ reservations, input your parking space, mobile order food and make dining reservations. You can also see the day’s schedule for shows and ride wait times.

If travelling in a group to Disneyland, it’s wise to let everyone in the group have their own ticket on their phone in the app. That way, if you get separated, everyone still has their own tickets. And they could have their own Genie+ if they want, or allocate one person to book all the Genie+ extras on the day.

Dining Reservations

The last thing to do is plan and order your dining.  As dining options can book up very quickly, reservations can be made 60 days in advance. So if you want to eat in Olga’s Cantina in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge or the Blue Bayou restaurant inside the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, I suggest you book these as soon as you can.

There are plenty of quick service spots in the park which don’t need a reservation, so there are plenty of dining options. You could have pizza at Alien Pizza in Tomorrowland. What about meat skewers and veggie kababs at the Bengal Barbecue to name a couple

If you don’t want to buy food at the park you can bring in your own snacks and food.  You will need to inform the security cast member that you have it when you arrive.

1 Day at Disneyland – The Big Day in Disneyland

Rope Dropping to Close

The big day to Disneyland has arrived. It is best to accomplish all you want to see and do in Disneyland by being there from open to close. Being at the park for opening is called rope dropping. The name came from that you can enter the park before park opening (usually 15 minutes before time) but only to a certain part of the park which is roped off. At the official park opening time, the rope ‘drops’ and you are then free to explore the entire park.

To get into Disneyland for rope drop, it is wise to be at the park some 45 minutes before the park opens. This is because you may need to park, go through security and make your way to the park entrance – this can take anywhere from 30-45 minutes. If you stay at Disneyland Resort – they let you in 30 minutes before rope drop, plus it is in walking distance.

And you can leave the park anytime however, try to stay until the park closes to get maximum fun from the park and get your money’s worth during your one day in Disneyland. However, check the closing time of some of the rides, as they close before the park. Mostly because if there are long queues for the ride, they try to get those onto the ride before the park closes.

• Have breakfast before you arrive to give it time to go down before you go on any rides.
• Arrive and go through entry procedures. Don’t forget, if driving, input your parking spot in the Disneyland app to help you remember where you parked.
• Once inside, appoint a reservation master and reserve your line jumping through Genie+
• During the morning go on a couple of rides and visit a couple of lands.
• Have lunch.
• More rides and lands.
• See the Grand Parade.
• Have dinner.
• See the fireworks.
• Lastly, at park close, catch the Disneyland Railroad to the exit and shop at Downtown Disney District as this area stays open later than the park.

What to Bring for Your Day in Disneyland

It would be nice to be hands and bag-free on your trip to Disneyland but there are things you will need to bring, particularly if you are visiting Disneyland Resort with kids. Kids seem to need more stuff when you go out.

• Phone or camera to take photos
• Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and hand sanitiser
• Reusable water bottle and snacks
• Sense of fun, excitement and a little pixie dust.

Savannah is the oldest city of the beautiful southern USA state of Georgia. It was an important city during the American Revolution and Civil War serving as a seaport and industrial centre. Today, it’s full of wonderful attractions showcasing its history through important landmarks, streets, parks and buildings. From historic architecture to spooky ghosts (it is one of the most haunted cities in America, after all), this three day guide to Savannah will help you design your perfect trip. Day 1: Forsyth Park and Food Tour

Enjoy a southern delicacy – shrimp and grits

On the first day of your three day visit to Savannah, start off with a small breakfast at your accommodation or visit a cafe like Foxy Loxy Cafe or Goose Feathers Cafe & Bakery. Try not to eat too much though. You’ll want to be hungry for your food tour later!

When I visit a new city, I like to go on the tourist hop on hop off bus. It gives me an insight to the city, plus lets me work out which places I want to go and spend more time in. If I’m travelling with kids in Savannah it will give you an idea of what interests them too! And you’re in luck! Savannah has the Savannah Hop On Hop Off Trolley taking you to some of the best places in Savannah.

If you don’t go on the Savannah Hop On Hop Off Trolley….. start day one of this 3 day visit to Savannah at one of the most famous sites in Savannah: the fountain in Forsyth Park. Enjoy a leisurely walk from your accommodation to the park. The morning is the best time to visit the park as the weather should be temperate and it won’t have peak crowds yet.

At 30 acres large, there is a lot to see during your walk here. Street performers, art and architecture, to name a few. One of my favorite parts? All the dogs! Locals bring their dogs here for walks and to play with other pets.

If you’re a fan of the movie Forrest Gump, you can take a quick detour to Chippewa Square where the bus scene was filmed. Unfortunately, if you want to see the famous bench, you’ll have to go to the Savannah History Museum.

Late morning, kick on a food tour of Savannah. Visit a variety of different restaurants and local food boutiques, so you can quickly become an expert in all things Southern food. Meet your guide and embark on a culinary journey. Some of the foods and beverages you can expect to try include craft beers, honey products, Southern coastal cuisine, authentic mojitos, Southern biscuits and chicken, and British pies.

There’s no better way to work off all that delicious food than shopping down Broughton Street. Some of the shops you won’t want to miss are the Savannah Bee Company, Nourish, and The Paris Market and Brocante.

If you’re craving something sweet, stop by one of the top 10 ice cream parlors in the world: Leopold’s Ice Cream. With a mix of classic and unique flavors, there’s something for everyone here.

Plan to spend a few hours window shopping and enjoying the local shops in the area. For a break from the sun, check out Gutstein Gallery, one of the many galleries owned and restored by the Savannah College of Art and Design. In the past, it has featured artists like Yoko Ono, Chuck Close, Richard Mosse and Gregory Crewdson.

Dinner at the Olde Pink House is only a quick walk away. The Olde Pink House is known for its Southern cuisine served inside a Colonial mansion. This is one of the most famous restaurants in Savannah, so you’ll want to make a reservation as early in advance as possible.

To close out the evening, visit a cocktail bar before heading back to your hotel. One of the best spots for a drink is the Alley Cat Lounge. You have to walk through an alley to get there, but that really adds to the speakeasy vibe here.

Day 2: Riverfront and Ghost Tour

Enjoy the Savannah Riverfront

This morning, kick off your day by eating brunch and collecting rubber ducks at Little Duck Diner. Yes, you can get drinks here with rubber ducks in them! Not to mention, the food at the diner is delicious.

After you’ve had your fill, head over to River Street. It’s a lovely walk with plenty of shops to stop by along the way. You’ll definitely want to check out River Street Market Place and Savannah Candy Kitchen.

The Tiniest Bookshop can also be found on River Street. True to its name, this bookshop is just 150 square feet! Can you believe it started as a bus?

If you enjoy boat rides, you’ll definitely want to arrange a riverfront cruise. This is a good way to learn about the history of Savannah while seeing the city from another angle. Savannah Riverboat Cruises has two boats, so you can choose the best cruise for you.

For more nature-forward scenery, walk over to Johnson Square. The trees here are gorgeous! If you purchased a book at The Tiniest Bookshop, this would be a great place to pause and read.

After all that walking, you’ll probably be ready for a pick-me-up. Some of the best coffee shops and cafes in Savannah include The Coffee Fox and Bitty & Beau’s Coffee.

By the way, Savannah is an open container city. If you drink alcohol, you could walk into a bar and ask for a drink to-go! You’ll probably see a lot of bachelorette parties in Savannah enjoying a few drinks.

One of the must-do’s in Savannah is a ghost tour. Since you’re visiting one of the most haunted cities in America, it’s a right of passage in the city to see if you can find some (hopefully friendly) ghosts. Soon after your pick-me-up of choice, embark on a ghost tour. There are a couple of different types of ghost tours in Savannah catered to the type of adventure you want. If you’re looking for something more laidback, companies will take you to the most haunted spots in the city on a trolley. If you’re looking for something more hands on, like a paranormal investigation, there are tours for that too.

After your encounters with the beyond, close out your evening at one of the Riverfront’s many rooftop bars. The Electric Moon Skytop Lounge + The Moon Deck has table service overlooking the river. You can wave to tourists and locals going by on boats from here while enjoying a few beverages and small plates.

Day 3: Discover more of Savannah

Lots of buildings with southern charm and character

On your final day in Savannah, you’ll spend your morning in the city followed by a day trip to explore the outskirts of Savannah.

Once again, you’ll be partaking in the best type of meal – brunch. Collin’s Quarter is one of the most popular brunch spots in Savannah. But no need to fear, they’re good at getting a lot of people seated in a timely manner. Don’t miss their unique coffees and teas.

Next, you’ll be learning about the history in Savannah. Your first stop is the Colonial Park Cemetery, located in the heart of the Historic District. This cemetery is the oldest in Savannah, dating back to 1750. It’s known for being the final resting place for 700 people who died during the yellow fever epidemic of 1820.

While dark, it’s still important to explore the more difficult parts of history. At the Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters, you can take a tour to learn about the families who lived there and the enslaved people forced to work there.

Another piece of Savannah’s history is that the first Girl Scout’s of America headquarters is located here. If you were a Girl Scout, or know someone who was, you may want to visit Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace to learn about the creator of the Girl Scout’s.

After you’ve learned about the history of Savannah, it’s time for a change of pace. Located about 25 minutes away from downtown Savannah is Tybee Island, where you’ll spend the afternoon. Although it’s called an island, you can drive (or taxi) straight there. At Tybee Island, you can try to spot some wild dolphins on a tour or just spend a few hours soaking in the sand and sun. It’s a great place to relax after all the walking you’ve been doing and get your tan on.

How to Get Around Savannah

As Savannah is a relatively small city, it’s easy to get around on foot. To make best use of your time, it’s recommended to block your days based on where you’re walking. So get your walking shoes on that you’ve packed for this weekend getaway! If you tire of walking or you’re travelling Savannah with little kids that tire quickly, Savannah’s bus system is called CAT. There are 15 different bus routes to get you around. There is also DOT, the free shuttle services that takes residents and visitors around Savannah’s historic district. It runs every 10 minutes.

You can visit Savannah anytime, though the weather of the different seasons may influence when you visit.

Spring – March, April, May – is said to be the best time to visit Savannah as the weather is warm and pleasant and the azaleas are flowering. There are also plenty of festivals to enjoy.

Summer – June, July, August – is hot and humidity can be sky high making it unpleasant walking around, particularly if visiting Savannah with kids.

Fall – September, October, November –  is when the weather begins to cool and tourism tends to be lower making Savannah better for walking around. And enjoying some of the festivals such as the Savannah Jazz Fest.

Winter in Savannah – December, January, February – is a great time to visit Savannah as it is pleasant walking around the city, plus you get the amazing Christmas atmosphere.

The most beautiful place to stay in Savannah is its historic district. You will be right in the heart of the hustle and bustle of the city here, making it easy to walk and discover some of the best things to see and do in Savannah. Like Forsyth Park and the Georgia State Railroad Museum. And there are plenty of restaurants and great bars for those chasing the nightlife. Other areas to stay are City Market and Midtown, but if this is your first visit to Savannah I would stay in the historic district to be close to everything.

I love a quick weekend getaway to escape a work week’s stress. Living outside of Atlanta, we have many great options. One of my favorite weekend retreats is in Asheville, North Carolina, just a few hours away. If it’s not in driving distance, you can fly into Asheville or Greenville, South Carolina, an hour away.

Asheville is tucked in the gorgeous Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. For the outdoorsmen, you can hike, raft, or explore the Blue Ridge Parkway. Check out the brewery scene, such as Highland Brewery, New Castle, or Sierra Nevada, for a more relaxed weekend.

If you love history, then there’s nothing better than the grand splendor of the Biltmore Estate. Take a tour of a Gilded Age mansion still owned by descendants of the Vanderbilt family who built it. You’ll be shocked to see an indoor pool and bowling alley! After your tour, stroll through the magnificent gardens and check out the winery on the property at Antler Village. I find the property a retreat and love staying at one of the hotels on the property. When we take the kids, we will pack bikes for them to ride on the trails in the estate.

The quirky city of Boulder, Colorado is the perfect weekend getaway in the USA. Set at the base of the Flatirons, this city offers easy access to hiking just outside of the city or in nearby Rocky Mountain National Park. You can also stroll along Boulder Creek, which runs through the city and is accompanied by walking and running paths. 

The main pedestrian area in the city is Pearl Street, home to a variety of shops, restaurants, and breweries. You can easily spend a few hours watching the street performers and browsing the interesting, which include a wooden jigsaw puzzle vendor and a jungle-themed chocolatier. For dinner, locals love to grab a burger and local brew from Mountain Sun, a brewery and restaurant on the eastern end of Pearl Street. 

Choose a hotel near Pearl Street so that you can stay near the best restaurants and bars. Some hotels along Pearl Street even offer views of the Flatirons from the guest rooms.

If you’re looking for one of the best weekend getaways in the USA then Charleston, South Carolina is the perfect place for you. This historic city was initially founded in 1670 and is now the largest city in the state. Therefore, this place has a rich history and a ton of incredible things to do during your weekend in Charleston. 

Take a step into the past and watch horse-drawn carriages roll through quaint cobblestone streets. Admire pastel-hued antebellum homes that can be seen all along Rainbow Row. In fact, many of these iconic buildings date all the way back to the 1740s. 

Next, enjoy stunning views of Charleston Harbor from the Battery and Waterfront Park. In particular, the Battery is a great one-mile-long walkway where you can take a stroll and enjoy the harbor on one side and a series of colorful homes on the other. If you have time you can also stop by White Point Garden near the Battery before learning about the start of the Civil War at Fort Sumter. 

Afterward, head to Shamrock Garden on Legare Street. It’s a lovely hidden gem and a perfect place for a photoshoot away from the crowds. Sneak a peak at this stunning, private, boxwood garden through an iron fence before heading to Camellias to grab a drink at the elegant, pastel-hued lounge. You can order a glass of champagne or sample a cocktail like To Peach Their Own.

Chicago, Illinois

One of my favorite cities for a USA weekend getaway is without a doubt Chicago, Illinois.  Chicago is a fun place with all sorts of things to see and do.  There’s truly something for everyone!

No trip to Chicago is complete without a visit to the Bean.  While you’re there, be sure to explore Millenium Park and the beauty all around it.  If museums interest you, Chicago has no shortage of them.  Chicagoans’ favorites include The Art Institute of Chicago, Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium, Field Museum, and Museum of Science and Industry.  If you’re visiting during baseball season, a Cubs game at Wrigley Field is a must!

I have two personal favorite things to do in Chicago that I recommend to anyone who visits.  One is to take an architecture cruise.  Go out on a boat along the river and lakefront and enjoy the views of the city while a guide tells you all about the city’s famous architecture.  The other is to bike ride along the lakeshore path from North Ave Beach to the Adler Planetarium, as the views are spectacular!

This capital city is steeped in history which you can discover when you walk around downtown Honolulu. The State Building and Iolani Palace are must visits.

Attracting millions of visitors each year, most people think of the beaches when they think of Hawaii. And Honolulu has a fabulous beach, along with Waikiki Beach that is overlooked by iconic palms and high-rise hotels. As well as spending a couple of lazy days at the beach, there is plenty of shopping at the International Market Place and the open air Ala Moana Centre.

Key West is known for its amazing restaurants that are located right on the water and serve gourmet food with fresh fish and seafood and locally sourced produce. When eating in Key West, you need to make sure you leave room for the famous Key Lime Pie found on almost every menu. Guests can enjoy wooden deck verandas, patios, glass dining rooms, and more that allow you to enjoy the sunset as you eat your meal alongside the water. Some must-try restaurants in Key West include Latitudes, Half Shell Raw Bar, and Hot Tin Roof.

Key West has a history of speakeasies and rum runners, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that Key West is known for its fantastic nightlife and some of the best bars. My favorite weekend getaway in the USA is Leavenworth Washington, an adorable Bavarian Village located in the Cascade mountains. A visit to this beautiful town is like taking a trip to Germany, without having to leave the country! The buildings of downtown Leavenworth, with their painted murals, are like something straight out of a Bavarian storybook. Explore the streets lined with shops and restaurants, the entire area filled with the sounds of lively German music. Stop in at the beer garden for an authentic German beer. Stop into one of the restaurants and eat your fill of schnitzels, brats, pretzels, black forest cake, apple strudel and more! After you explore the town, head down to the riverfront park for amazing views of the Wenatchee River and surrounding mountains.  Winter in Leavenworth is simply magical, like a wintery snow globe sprung to life! The town is all aglow with Christmas lights and rooftops are heavy with snow. Visitors can enjoy horse drawn sleigh rides with snow capped mountains in the background, or many of the winter sports like snow tubing. No matter the time of year, no trip to Leavenworth is complete without a trip to the Leavenworth Reindeer farm!

Miami, Florida

For a weekend getaway that combines the sand and city, there is no better place to go than Miami! There is something for everyone to enjoy — if you’re into history and art, take an art deco walking tour through South Beach or a street mural tour in Wynwood. If you’re more interested in nature, you won’t want to miss the lush tropical oasis of the Fairchild Botanic Gardens.

While those are both fantastic things to check out, you really can’t go to Miami without relaxing on its 10 miles of pristine white sands — Miami Beach is one of the most famous beaches in the US! In addition to the beach, the area boasts diverse dining, high-end shopping, nightlife, and more.

No matter what you choose to do while in Miami, your day can’t properly start without a killer breakfast or brunch spread! Whether you’re looking for fruity acai bowls or stacks of fluffy pancakes, you’ll find it. On the weekend, be sure not to miss the special brunch menu at PLANTA; it’s one of Miami’s best plant-based brunch spots.

Nashville, TN

My absolute favorite USA city for a weekend getaway is Nashville, TN. there’s a million reasons to love “Music City”, and music is just the beginning. A long weekend here is perfect, and with an ever growing airport, it has become extremely easy to fly in and out for your next weekend vacation.

You’ll want to start by taking a walk down Broadway, the main strip in Nashville for the live music. The honky tonks line the streets, the music pouring out of each door. You may think of country music when you think of this southern city, but here in Nashville you’ll hear all types of genres everywhere you go.

The honky tonks are lots of fun and allow you to hear the incredible music from the thousands of musicians who take the stage each weekend here in town. But I urge you to step away from the glowing lights and experience some of the more intimate venues, like the Bluebird Cafe. Full of history, the Bluebird Cafe has hosted some of the most famous artists before they hit it big, like Taylor Swift for example. It’s a quaint and intimate place with yummy food and the best music around.

But if music isn’t your thing, there’s so much more this city has to offer for your weekend getaway. If you love wine, then be sure to visit Arrington Vineyards for delicious local wines and a relaxing countryside setting. Or, head to the Gaylord Opryland to wander around the massive garden atrium filled with beautiful flowers and plants, fountains and restaurants.

You’ll have to try the famous Nashville hot chicken while you’re here, so check out Prince’s or Hattie B’s. The city is filled to the brim with incredible spots to dine like Il Forno for Italian, Acme Feed and Seed for Southern cuisine and the Assembly Food Hall for a huge variety of local vendors.

New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is such a fun city to consider for a weekend getaway. Brimming with culture, history, and mystery, the Big Easy makes for an exciting and memorable trip out of town. 

New Orleans is the perfect city to explore on foot. With stunning neighborhoods like the French Quarter and the Garden District, exploring the architecture and greenery with friends or family can be such a fun experience. Jumping on a streetcar to make your way to another part of town just adds to the adventure! 

New Orleans is also known for its food and fun. Be sure to try some of the city’s classic dishes like PoBoys, beignets, and jambalaya. And if you’re looking to burn the midnight oil, this city is full of jazz clubs where you can dance the night away.  

You can’t visit New Orleans without exploring some of the haunting mysteries of the city. Have some creepy fun on one of the city’s many cemetery tours or explore the underbelly of Voodoo at Marie Laveau’s House Of Voodoo or at the New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum. 

Whether you’re looking for an artful and restful getaway or one full of adventure and fun, New Orleans fits the bill. Here’s to a memorable weekend getaway! 

New York City, NY

No matter the season, there is nothing like a weekend getaway to New York City. Besides the obvious tourist attractions, NYC has amazing restaurants at all price points, a large variety of museums, shopping, theatre, sporting events, and just about everything one could want out of a weekend away.

While New York City is way too big to see on a weekend, it is the type of weekend trip that you can take again and see a whole other side of the city.

Visitors can spend a weekend enjoying brunch and shopping or by exploring the outer boroughs. You can visit some of the smaller museums such as The Museum of the City of NY, the Tenement Museum, or the Museum of the Moving Image. Or you can head to the more well-known MET and MOMA. Did you know that a ticket to the MET includes the Cloisters which are located in Fort Tyrone north of Washington Heights?

Attend a baseball, basketball, or hockey game during your weekend in NYC. If you would rather, there are plenty of options for theatre both on and off Broadway, concerts, and dance performances.

If you are looking for a weekend of fine dining at Michelin Star restaurants and enjoying cocktails at rooftop bars you can get that in NYC. Plus find cheap eats and dive bars, those are easy to find in NYC too.

Walk through the botanic gardens, visit the zoo, go ice skating, or take a food tour. If you are looking for something different to do, check out these unique tours in NYC. The thing about New York City is that it has everything one could want on a weekend away. It even has beaches.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The USA is full of unique and fun cities to enjoy for a weekend getaway, but one of the most underrated cities that is so fun, hands down, goes to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Philadelphia is rich in American history and has an incredible food scene. This lively city is filled with charm, including cobblestone alleys and tree-lined streets. A weekend in Philadelphia is the perfect amount of time to explore the city’s most famous attractions.

Visit Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens and discover the gardens made of mirrors, bottles, and handmade tiles. For some insightful American history, make sure to see the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. Then, take a stroll through Rittenhouse Square, which is a gorgeous green space that dates back to the 17th century.

If you’re a movie buff, you also can’t miss climbing to the top of the Rocky Stairs, which also offers epic city views.

Philadelphia is also filled with delicious eateries. Be sure to have an authentically local experience at Jim’s on South Street. On another day, Green Eggs Cafe has the most incredible brunch selection.

When looking for a place to stay, there is a myriad of options, but the Philadelphia Marriot Old City Hotel is well-reviewed online and in a great neighborhood.

While you may struggle to find parking spaces in the city, there are plenty of public transport options.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

If you’re looking for a weekend getaway where you can fill up on Southern cooking, tour historic homes, and stroll down lamplit streets, look no further than beautiful Savannah, Georgia.

The city is easy to access. Less than 30 minutes from both the SAV/HHI International Airport and the I-95 exit. If you’re a fan of the beach, you can also access Tybee Island from Savannah in under 30 minutes. Savannah is known for attractions such as Forsyth Park, Bonaventure Cemetery, River Street and the Cathedral Basilica of St John the Baptist. Plus the many beautiful homes that fill the city’s Historic District.

If you’re interested in tours, the hop-on/hop-off trolleys provide a broad overview of the city since its founding in 1733. There are numerous walking tours that focus on a variety of subjects. From Black history tours to food-sampling tours to ghost tours.

Since Savannah is so walkable, you won’t even need a car to get around! You can take an Uber or taxi from the airport to the Historic District. Here you’ll be able to walk to the majority of the city’s landmarks. If you tire of walking, the free DOT shuttles can transport you to many points in the Historic, Victorian, and Starland districts. Pedicabs are also readily available!

March is the most popular time to visit, thanks to all the colorful azaleas that bloom that month. The historic Marshall House makes an excellent place to stay.

Seattle offers plenty of attractions that will keep you entertained day and night. During the day, why not take an iconic ride on the historic Great Wheel on Pier 57. Or visit one of many museums such as Chihuly Garden & Glass or The Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP)? 

There are even lots of cheap things to do in Seattle. Climb the Tower at Volunteer Park, visit the Gas Works Park, or explore its murals and street art. And if you’re feeling brave enough there’s also skydiving nearby!  

When night falls, there’s no shortage of lively bars and restaurants where you can enjoy delicious food from around the world while admiring beautiful views over Puget Sound. Canvas Restaurant & Market serves up a delicious selection of modern American cuisine at its outdoor terrace. Try the crispy Brussels sprouts, the roasted cauliflower steak served with parmesan cream sauce, and their homemade apple crisp.

You can even take part in one of many evening cruises which offer breathtaking sights along with a gourmet 3-course dinner. And if you like to spend time outdoors, you will also love Seattle’s lush green spaces with stunning views of the Cascade Mountains, kayaking in Lake Union Park, and hiking up Magnolia Bluff.

Some of the best things to see on Route 66

Thanks to a car-friendly culture and an unrivalled network of highways, taking a road trip across America is very appealing. And if you are looking for inspiration for a USA road trip look no further. Based on my own American travels I have put together this 1 month USA road trip itinerary taking you to many of the best bits of America. Of course you can’t go everywhere in one month, but we give it a good try on this road trip in America. 

Where to Start this American Road Trip?

This great American road trip starts in New York and ends in San Francisco. Of course, you can do the trip in reverse or even deviate. This itinerary is a driving itinerary of the USA so you will need a car. A car or a van. If you don’t have one you can rent one, get availability and a great rate here. If you aren’t taking your accommodation with you, you will need to find accommodation at each nightly stop. Either walk in to a motel when you have pulled into town or book in advance. I always use Booking.com when pre-booking accommodation. When searching for accommodation it shows me what accommodation is available, if it is available and the price.

Unfortunately, we can’t visit every state on this road trip, but this road trip is a good start. It includes visits to many cities as you cross the USA from coast to coast. There are many routes you could take across the USA, I hope you enjoy this one.

New York is home to over eight million people and is where this one month USA road trip itinerary begins. There is so much to see and do here in New York to make the time to see as much as you can. Best Things to See and Do in New York

• You may wish to purchase a New York City Pass allowing you to save on entrance fees. 
• Take the New York Hop-on Hop-off Bus to all the best bests in New York. Then you can go back to those spots you want to spend longer at.
• Go on a walking tour of New York, which you can book through GetYourGuide. 
• See the Statue of Liberty when you pay a visit to Ellis Island. Or take the Ferry to Staten Island and see it for free while passing by.
• Visit the 9/11 Memorial & Museum – There is a park commemorating the victims of 9/11 at the base of the Freedom Tower. Head inside the museum and see over 14,000 artefacts from that that day. 
• Go to the top of the Empire State Building for great views over the city. Hopefully, it is a clear day.
• Wander Central Park. This 843 acre park is one of the bet free attractions in town. Walk, hike, picnic or just people watch.
• Cross the Brooklyn Bridge for great Manhattan skyline views. It will take about 40 minutes to cross but this depends on how many photo stops you make. 
• Explore the Metropolitan Museum of Art (the Met) to see some of the best art collections in the world.

Days 4-6 – to Washington, DC

Distance: Washington is around 204 miles (329 km) from New York City and should take around four and a half hours to drive. Washington, DC, is the capital of the USA. There are plenty of iconic buildings to visit here.

Best Things to See and Do in Washington

• Take the Washington Hop-on Hop-off Bus Tour to see all the best spots in Washington. Then you can return to those you want to stay longer at.
• Visit iconic buildings of the Capital, White House and Supreme Court.
• See the Lincoln Memorial. This is a 19-foot statue of America’s 16th president that is surrounded by 36 columns – one for each state in the union at the time of his death in 1865. It is located on the National Mall. 
• Tour the Smithsonian Institution which is a group of world-class museums and research centres. Definitely visit the Air and Space Museum and the American Art Museum.

Days 7 – Drive to Chicago via Pittsburg

Distance: Chicago is a long drive from Washington. Some 700 miles (1126 km) which will take anywhere up to 11-12 hours to undertake, depending on stops you make. You may want to even stop in Pittsburg for a day or so. 

Days 8-10 – Chicago, Illinois

When in Chicago eating Deep Pan Pizza is a must!

Welcome to the Windy City – Chicago. Why is it called the windy city? Two reasons. First because of strong winds that can hit the city plus, it was believed a lot of people were full of wind! Find out for yourself!

Best Things to See and Do in Chicago

• Start your visit to Chicago on the Hop-on Hop-off Bus Tour which will take you to all the best spots in Chicago. Then you can choose which ones you wish to return to.
• Relax in Grant and Millennium Parks. Both parks are great to relax in, have a picnic or walk around.
• Enjoy a Deep-dish Pizza. Chicago is known for deep-dish pizzas so definitely try this local favourite.

Start your drive along Route 66 at the sign on the northwest corner of Adams Street and Michigan Avenue. Why not get a photo if you can to commemorate the beginning of this 1 month USA road trip journey.

Days 11-20 – Route 66

Route 66 is one of the world’s most iconic drives. It starts in Chicago and ends at Santa Monica Pier in California. Travelling some 2200 miles, if you drive direct it would take a couple of days. On this 1 month USA road trip, I have budgeted 10 days for the drive where you will take in some of the best things in the USA to see along the way. Head over to my post The Best Things to See and Do on Route 66 for this part of the road trip USA itinerary. Starting in Chicago, Illinois you will travel across 8 states. Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona before arriving in California and the end of the road at Santa Monica Pier.

There is plenty to see along Route 66 and you can deviate off the road to visit iconic places like the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas.

Days 21-23 – Los Angeles

See Disneyland Castle in Disneyland, Anaheim, Los Angeles

Route 66 ends at Santa Monica Pier in California. You could stay here and use it as your base to discover Los Angeles.

Best Things to See and Do in Los Angeles

• Take the Hop on Hop off LA Sightseeing Bus and be driven to all the best sights in Los Angeles.
• Visit the Hollywood Sign high in Hollywood Hills.
• Take a tour of Paramount Studios and or Warner Bros Studios or Universal Studios.
• Spend the day or two at Disneyland.
• Shop till you drop along Rodeo Drive.
• Hit the beach at Malibu – or wait and visit on your drive up to San Francisco.

Days 24-26 drive to San Francisco

Bixby Creek Bridge

The drive between Los Angeles and San Francisco along the Pacific Coast Highway is approximately 445 miles (716 km) long. If you were to drive directly without deviating you could complete the drive in about nine hours. However, there is plenty to see along this scenic drive and I have budgeted 3 days to drive it. Places to stop along the Pacific Coast Highway could include:

• Santa Monica. Home of the Santa Monica Pier where Route 66 ends, if you didn’t finish Route 66 here, then you might want to visit. Walk along the pier and get that tourist shot of you on the pier!
• Next stop could be Malibu. Check out some of the multi-million dollar homes or visit some of the beautiful beaches. Depending on the weather you might want to relax at the beach for a couple of hours or enjoy a good meal.
• Santa Barbara could be next on your list to visit. Stroll along the harbour or go one of Santa Barbara’s Urban Wine Trails. You will discover some of the best wine in California!
• On leaving Santa Barbara pass a few beaches and deviate to Hearst Castle outside of San Simeon. This caslte was built by the newspaper mogul William Hearst. If you ever wanted to feel like you are in Europe, visit this castle!
• Elephant Seal Vista Point could be your next stop. See elephant seals relaxing on the beach.
• A highlight along the LA to San Francisco drive is Big Sur. You may want to spend a full day or more here enjoying the walks in the spectacular natural scenery. Ensure to stop at the iconic sites of Bixby Creek Bridge and McWay Waterfall.
• Stop in towns of Carmel, Monterey and Santa Cruz where you might want to spend the night!
• Half Moon Bay is around 30 minutes south of San Francisco and is worth a stop to stretch your legs and grab a coffee before arriving in San Francisco.

Days 27-29 San Francisco

Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco

Ah, San Francisco, famous for its cable cars, Golden Gate Bridge and great restaurants. A stay of a few days is a must.

• Take the Hop on Hop off Bus tour of San Francisco. Get taken to all the iconic spots that you can revisit at your leisure.
• Go to the Golden Gate Bridge. Opened in 1937, it is one of the longest suspension bridges ever created. It links San Francisco Bay and Marin County.
• Spend some time at San Francisco’s most famous waterfront community – Fisherman’s Wharf.
• Visit Alcatraz Island and discover for yourself how hard it would be to escape from.
• Take a ride on a cable car.
• Disney lovers may want to visit The Walt Disney Family Museum and learn about the life of Walt Disney.

Aloha (Hello). So you have a month holiday and you have decided to spend it in Hawaii – lucky you! Hawaii is one of my favourite places on the planet to visit and I have visited many times. I’m attracted to Hawaii for many reasons. I love its great weather, beautiful beaches with crystal clear water, breathtaking scenery, indigenous Hawaiian culture, an interesting history, magnificent sunsets over the ocean and fabulous food. In this post, I am going to list the best things to see and do during your visit to the Hawaiian Islands. If you only have one week in Hawaii, I would suggest you spend most of your time on Oahu, the main island and maybe include a day trip or two to the other islands.

Where is Hawaii?

The Hawaiian Islands are found in the Pacific Ocean. They are an archipelago of around 137 islands but only 7 of the largest islands are inhabited. Hawaii is the 50th State of the United States of America and is the only state outside of mainland USA. The Hawaiian islands are home to some 1.5 million people with most of them living and working on the main island of Oahu.

When is the Best Time to Visit Hawaii?

The weather is pretty near perfect all year round in Hawaii so anytime is a good time to visit Hawaii. However, many consider the weather before arranging their visit.

Summer in Hawaii is the months of June, July and August. Weather is hot and fabulous during this time. It is also school holiday time so there are many visitors holidaying in the Hawaiian islands. This can make accommodation and transport costs more expensive and there will be plenty of people around wanting to discover Hawaii.

Fall in Hawaii is the months of September, October and November. Weather is pleasant in Hawaii during these months. And even though rain can happy any time, particularly on the windward (north-eastern) side of the islands, November is the beginning of the rainy season.

Winter in Hawaii is the months of December, January and February. These are the ‘off season’ months to visit Hawaii when there are less crowds, great deals on accommodation and the weather is nice.

Spring in Hawaii is the months of March, April, May. The rainy season is usually ending around March, with temperatures beginning to rise. This is a great time to visit Hawaii as the crowds haven’t arrived yet and there can be great deals on Hawaiian accommodation and other services. My family always visited in May, as this is when my dad had his holiday, and the weather was always sunny and warm. I also visited Hawaii solo in November one time and the weather was warm and sunny also. So I think any time is a good time to visit Hawaii.

How Much Money to Take on this 1 month Hawaiian Island Hopping holiday?

To work out how much it will cost to visit Hawaii for 30 days or so, I suggest you create a budget. As everyone comes to Hawaii for different reasons, like backpacking Hawaii, honeymooning in Hawaii or a Hawaiian family vacation, everyone has a different budget. Spending one month in Hawaii is long enough to visit the country. One month will allow you to visit all the best parts of Hawaii. The capital of Honolulu and allow island hopping. But the longer you have, the more you will be able to see and do in Hawaii.

On this one month Hawaiian Island itinerary we visit 6 of the islands. Each island is beautiful and unique and offers something different to discover. I don’t believe one island is better than the other – but after visiting the islands on this Hawaiian holiday itinerary, you may end up with a favourite island! This is why we island-hop on this 1 month Hawaiian itinerary – so you can experience as much of Hawaii as possible. And you can choose how you want to travel around the islands.

Hawaii 1 Month Vacation at a Glance

This 1 month Hawaiian island itinerary includes visits to 6 of the Hawaiian islands. I wouldn’t say it is action packed, but there is something to see and do every day. Plus, there is lots of relaxing by the pool or swimming, surfing or snorkelling in the beautiful Pacific Ocean. This is a quick glance at how I suggest you spend your one month Hawaiian vacation.

Be Greeted with a Traditional Hawaiian lei

Many people opt to be greeted at a Hawaiian airport with a traditional Hawaiian lei. While this is special and exciting, they can be expensive. You can find fresh leis at a local grocer for around a 1/4 of the price. So before anyone puts a lei on you, check if it is free first!

How to Travel Between Hawaiian Islands

Is it easy to island hop in Hawaii? Yes, it’s easy and really quick but travelling between neighbouring Hawaiian Islands is limited to inter-island flights. There is one ferry service that sails between Maui and Lanai a few times per day. On this itinerary, due to the cost of the inter-island airfares I have included day visits to a couple of the islands. This will help keep costs of the holiday down by eliminating two flights and accommodation on two of the islands.

What to Pack for your Hawaiian Holiday?

Clothes worn in Hawaii are very casual, mainly due to the hot and steamy weather. So shorts and t-shirts are fine to wear during the day. At night, it will depend on what you are doing and where you are going, but nice casual evening clothes are a good investment.

1 Month Hawaiian Islands Itinerary

Days 1-10 – Oahu – Hawaii’s Main Island

Get to know Waikiki by taking a walk along the foreshore

If this is your first time to the Hawaiian Islands? Kick this 1 month Hawaiian Island hopping itinerary on the main island of Oahu. Here you will find Honolulu, the capital city of Hawaii and the famous Waikiki Beach.

Where to Stay on Oahu

The best place to stay in Oahu is around Honolulu or Waikiki Beach. Accommodation in this are is very central, and it is easy to do day trips from here. They are also great places just to chill out and relax after a long day sightseeing or lazing on the beach. Book your accommodation on Oahu for 9 nights.

Hostel: The best places to stay in Hawaii on a budget are in a hostel. For a bed in a hostel room I can recommend the Polynesian Hostel Beach Club. A girlfriend and I stayed there for a few nights and it had everything we needed for our stay on Oahu. Get pricing and availability for the Polynesian Hostel Beach Club here.
Hotel: My family stayed in this hotel for most of our visits to Hawaii – the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort. This hotel is a very family friendly Hawaiian hotel. Only a couple of blocks from the beach with great views, this is my favourite hotel in Waikiki to stay at. Get pricing and availability for the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort here.
Splurge Resort: Hawaii is one of the best places to splurge on accommodation, particularly if you are honeymooning in Hawaii. Top of the list is the pink Royal Hawaiian on Waikiki Beach. The other resort would be the Hilton Hawaiian which I have seen as the filming location of the TV show Hawaii Five 0 and the backdrop of other tv shows and movies. Where to Eat and Drink in Honolulu

There are many places to eat in Waikiki and Honolulu from fast food stores to fine restaurants. Some of my favourites are Duke’s in the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Hotel and the Lilhia Bakery located on the third level of the International Market Place. However, I am sure you will discover many places to your liking yourself. I also love the flavoured shaved ice on a hot day and you cannot come to Hawaii and not try a Mai Tai or Blue Hawaii at one of the bars.

How to Get Around Honolulu and Waikiki

The best way to get around Honolulu and Waikiki is to walk. Everything is relatively close. You can use the public bus system, known as ’TheBus’ and I found it very good. Services were frequent and it only cost a few dollars to travel. You can get to many tourist spots, like Pearl Harbour using the public bus system, however, it will take longer because of the stops and route the bus takes. Lastly, you can use the hop on, hop off Waikiki Trolley. A little more expensive than the public bus system however, it does come with narration so if it is your first time to Waikiki and Honolulu, you can learn a lot from the Waikiki Trolley. Don’t bother renting a car to get around as the Waikiki and Honolulu area are compact and a car is not necessary. Rent one if you want to go to places on the island.

What to See and Do on Oahu

I have listed lots of things to see and do on Oahu following. Some things take a few hours while others can take the whole day. I will let you choose where you want to spend your time during your 9 days on Oahu.

Get to know the beaches of Waikiki

Waikiki Beach is a two-mile long sandy expanse with nine separate beaches. Though you can go to any of the beaches, one of the easiest to access is Fort DeRussy Beach. It’s a great place, as are all the beaches to dip your toes in the Pacific Ocean. Visit the ‘Duke Kahanamoku’ statue on Kūhiō Beach. Duke was born in 1890 and grew up swimming and surfing in Waikiki. He won gold medals at the Olympics and is known as ‘the father of modern surfing’.

Perhaps rent a surf board, stand up paddle board or kayak and get out on the water or just soak up the sunshine at Waikiki. Keep on walking and you will end up at Honolulu Zoo and Kapi’olani Regional Park at the base of Diamond Head.

Walk Kalākaua Avenue

The main street in Waikiki is Kalākaua Avenue. It stretches from Ala Moana down to Kapiʻolani Regional Park. This is a thriving thoroughfare lined with palm trees and jam-packed with malls, restaurants and skyscraper hotels. It is abuzz day and night with people and a must visit on any trip to Honolulu. You may even be staying in one of the hotels along it! Pop into an ABC Store to stock up on things you might need while in Hawaii. They are small convenience stores scattered across Honolulu providing sunscreen, souvenirs and some grocery items. Also visit the International Market Place which is an open-air shopping centre at 2330 Kalākaua Avenue. There are around 100 shops, stalls and restaurants here.

Pearl Harbour National Memorial

On a first-time visit to Hawaii, a must-visit is to the Pearl Harbour National Memorial. Located about a 25-minute drive from Waikiki, Pearl Harbour was scene of the horrific bombing in World War II by the Japanese. The site has three museums to visit but the most emotional part is catching a boat to the USS Arizona Memorial. This memorial lies on the water over the sunken USS Arizona with those who went down with the ship entombed inside. Budget to spend about half a day here. It is best to organise your visit in advance as tours are timed and have a limit to visitors.

Hike to the top of Diamond Head

Diamond Head, a volcanic cone, dominates Waikiki’s eastern landscape. As well as being a backdrop for over Waikiki, if you hike to the top of Diamond Head you will be treated with sweeping views of Honolulu and eastern Oahu. You can walk from Waikiki to the Diamond Head trailhead, but it may be worth getting a lift to the park entrance because even though the hike is short, it is steep and unshaded. As you can imagine, this is a popular thing to do when visiting Waikiki. In an effort to resolve trail overcrowding, you will need to make a timed reservation to access the trail.

Swim and Snorkel Hanauma Bay

Hanauma Bay is about one hour north of Honolulu. Some people make a quick visit on their ‘around Oahu island tour’. But this place, a blown out flooded volcano head is full of crystal clear water, white sand and beautiful coloured fish and is a great place to swim and snorkel.

Views Over Oahu at Nu’uanu Pali Lookout

I would choose to visit Nu’uanu Pali Lookout as a stop while on an island tour. However, you can visit on its own as it is a five-mile drive northeast of Honolulu. You will drive along the Pali Highway through tall trees to arrive at the lookout. Pali is Hawaiian for cliff, and this is where you will be at the top of a cliff face. As well as providing fabulous views there is great historical significance to this site. This is the site of the Battle of Nuʻuanu, where in 1795 King Kamehameha I won the struggle that finally united Oʻahu under his rule. The battle was fierce and it is said, the strong winds that you will feel there were created by many soldiers falling and jumping off the cliff face as they lost their life or refused to follow Kamehameha. It is free to enter the lookout though there is a $7 parking fee.

Take a Day Tour Around the Island

Either rent a car or book a trip around the island of Oahu. This trip will show you some breathtaking coastal and mountain scenery. First stop the Nu’uanu Pali Lookout. As you near the bottom of the mountain turn right and follow the lush coastline of the North Shore – famed for its fabulous surf at beaches such as Sunset Beach. Stop to hike to the Waimea Falls at Waimea Bay. Call into the Polynesian Cultural Centre and discover about the indigenous Hawaiians and maybe stay for an evening luau here. Visit Halona Beach, famed for being the beach where the love scene between Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr, in the movie From Here to Eternity was filmed. Visit a pineapple farm and see the pineapples growing and being harvested.

Polynesian Cultural Centre

Wander through 42 acres of tropical splendour and discover the culture from six different island nations – Fiji, Tonga, Aotearoa, Tahiti, Samoa and Hawaii. It is open from 12.30pm to 6pm however, you can book to dine at an authentic Polynesian luau that is topped off with a show of dancing from the islands.

Walk around Downtown Honolulu

Visit Iolani Palace, home of Hawaii’s last monarchs, the palace only dates back to 1882, which means it only served as a royal residence for nine years before the monarchy’s overthrow. Hawaii’s final monarch, Queen Liliʻuokalani was imprisoned in one of the palace’s upstairs bedroom for eight months in 1895 after loyalists tried to restore her to the throne. Today this stunningly beautiful building is a lovely place to learn about Hawaiian history. You may also recognise it as the headquarters of the TV show, Hawaii Five-0. Also see the King Kamamaha Statue and the Hawaii State Capital Building. He was the King who united the islands.

Iolani Palace

Shop till you drop at Ala Moana Centre

The Ala Moana Centre is Honolulu’s shopping capital. It is an open-air center featuring some 355 stores. From all the major American stores plus loads of boutiques to discover. There are also plenty of eateries from fast quick service restaurants to sit down restaurants. The centre is open from 10am to 8pm daily. And if there around 5pm, there is a Hula Show everyday on the centre stage at this time. Ala Moana Centre can be reached from some Waikiki hotels by walking, by bus or the Waikiki Trolley.

Visit Kualoa Ranch

A visit to Kualoa Ranch will show you where movies such as Jurassic Park and Jurassic World were filmed. I’m sure you will recognise the scenery. You can visit this independently or on an island tour.

Go on a Luau

There are many places to experience a luau – a traditional Hawaiian party or feast. The food is cooked the traditional way – buried in hot coals in the ground plus lots of local fruits and salads. There will be traditional hula dancing and a good time had by all. Maybe try a Blue Hawaii or Mai Tai – two drinks you must try.

Visit the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in the Punchbowl

Punchbowl is another volcanic cone just north of downtown Honolulu. Here you will find more than 60,000 military members who have been laid to rest. After paying your respects, head to the south rim of Punchbowl for fabulous views over Honolulu.

Days 11-14 Kauai – The Garden Isle (4 nights)

Na Pali Coastline – best seen from the air or ocean

Leave Oahu for 5 days on the island of Kauai – Flight time: Honolulu, Oahu to Lihue, Kauai – 25 minutes

Kauai is known as the Garden Isle because most of it is covered by tropical rainforest. It is the northern-most island in the Hawaiian chain and the oldest. After arriving, check into your accommodation and take a wonder around your resort and venture out to see what is around. During the next few days you could do the following while visiting the island of Kauai.

Things to See and Do on the Island of Kauai

Unfortunately you cannot do a circle island tour of Kauai as the roads don’t connect, but this gives you the perfect opportunity to visit the main areas. The weather of the day can determine where you will go. If it’s raining on the North Shore, start with the West/South Shore as it is usually sunny there. Keep this in mind when working out the best things to see and do on the island of Kauai.

NaPali Coast

The North Shore of Kauai is famous for its coastline. Visit the dramatic cliffs and pinnacles of its NaPali Coast – this is what brings many people to visit Kauai. You may have seen NaPali as a backdrop in many Hollywood films (South Pacific, Pirates of the Caribbean, Jurassic World) and TV shows (Gilligan’s Island, Fantasy Island, Magnum PI) made in Hawaii. The best way to see this part of Kauai is to take a helicopter ride or a boat trip as from the air or from the sea you get the best angles to see this magnificent area.

Waimea Canyon

See the 10-mile-long Waimea Canyon on the South Shore of Kauai. It is nicknamed the ‘Grand Canyon of the Pacific’ and is well worth the windy road to get to the viewing platform. If the day is foggy, don’t bother driving to Waimea Canyon as you won’t be able to see much, if anything at all. One of the best ways to see the canyon is from the air.

Other things to see and do on the island of Kauai include

• Hike the Nounou Trails traversing the Sleeping Giant mountain ridge.

• See the more than 100 years old Kilauea Lighthouse.

• Swim, snorkel, kayak or stand up paddle board at the beaches or relax by a pool. Maybe have a surfing lesson.

• Enjoy the food.

• Shop till you drop at the boutiques at Kukui’ula.

Days 15 – 21 – Maui – The Valley Isle (7 days)

An alternative to 7 days in Maui. Fly to Molokai for a few days, then to Lanai for a few days. From Lanai you can catch the ferry to Maui – the only ferry service between the islands. On this itinerary I have chosen not to stay on the islands of Molokai and Lanai, thus reducing the cost of the trip by eliminating a couple of airfares and accommodation – but to do day trips to them from Maui. But if you would prefer to stay on the islands I suggest flying from Kauai to Molokai then Lanai then catch the ferry (taking about 3 hours) to Maui.

Leave Kauai for a week on Maui. Flight time: Lihue, Kauai to Kahului, Maui – 49 minutes

Maui is known as ‘The Valley Isle’, and is the second largest Hawaiian island. It is know for the sacred lao Valley and world famous beaches. It’s capital city is Wailuku.

Where to Stay on Maui

Book for 7 nights. The most popular areas for accommodations are Kaanapali and Lahaina on the southwest side and Kihei in central/south. The sunniest and driest side of the island is Kaanapali.

The Road to Hana is one of the top attractions to do on the island of Maui. It is a 64-mile stretch of road that connects Kahului to Hana and is rated one of Hawaii’s best scenic drives. The Hana Highway takes you through tropical rainforests where you will see cascading waterfalls and along the coast taking in gorgeous coastal vistas.

Hike to See The Haleakala Crater

The Haleakala Crater, in the Haleakala National Park rises some 10,023 feet above the Pacific Ocean and attracts some 1.5 million visitors. Many climb to the summit to witness spectacular sunrises. It was termed ‘the sublimest spectacle’ by writer, Mark Twain.

Visit the Sacred Iao Valley State Park

The Sacred Iao Valley State Park in Maui is home to the famous Iao Needle, a natural rock formation. It holds historical importance as it was used to observe enemy movement in past battles when the islands had their own kings, and before King Kamehameha I united the islands. The 1,200 foot Iao Needle stands proudly in the Iao Valley State Park and is well worth a visit while on the island of Maui.

Day trip to Molokai

Molokai is known as The Friendly Isle. Molokai is the fifth largest island in the Hawaiian island archaepalego. It is also quite tiny being 38 miles long and 10 miles wide at its widest point. A large proportion of the population are of Native Hawaiian ancestry who have preserved their Native culture and way of living. So visiting Molokai can be like stepping back in time. As this island is one of the least developed with only a handful of souvenir shops and tour operators you will be kick back and relax on this island and enjoy the magnificent sea cliff faces with beautiful beaches below and sweeping Pacific Ocean vistas. Molokai is home to Hawaii’s longest continuous fringing reef, so don’t forget that snorkel gear and your reef-safe sunscreen.

Days 24-28 – Hawaii, The Big Island

Leaving the island of Maui, fly into either Kona or Hilo for 5 days on The Big Island. There are 2 airports on the island of Hawaii, one at Kona and the other Hilo so you can choose which you prefer to arrive at. I think the Kona side (west side is better) – but I’ll leave that up to you to decide.

Flight time, Kahului, Maui to Kona – 35 minutes and Kahului, Maui to Hilo – 40 minutes.

Here you will find some of Hawaii’s best beaches and the Volcano National Park. Hawaii is also known as the ‘golfing capital of Hawaii’. After arriving, head to your accommodation, unpack then get out and about.

A good area to stay on Hawaii is Kailua-Kona.

Visit the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

A visit to the island of Hawaii should include a visit to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The park is home to two active volcanoes – Mauna Loa and Kilauea. Check the park’s website first for current conditions and status of the trails as some or all can be closed due to volcanic activity. Some highlights in the park to visit if open – Kilauea Visitor Center, Chain of Craters, Crater Rim & Keanakāko’i Crater, Nāhuku (Thurston Lava Tube) and Halema’uma’u Trail.

Plenty of Snorkelling

There are many places on the big island to snorkel. Some of the best snorkelling is at Honaunau Bay in the National Historic Park. Many like to snorkel, particularly at night with the Manta Rays in Keauhou Bay.

Play a Round of Golf or Two

Hawaii is known as the ‘golf capital’ of the Hawaiian islands with a number of world-class golf resorts. It doesn’t have the most courses, the most are found on Ohau, however, play a round or two at the Kohala Coast resorts of Waikola, Mauna Lani and Mauna Kea – all world-class resorts.

• Discover the Kanaka Maoli culture when you visit Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park (The City Of Refuge).
• Enjoy the black sands of Punaluʻu Beach where you may spot a few turtles.
• Enjoy a beer tasting at the Kona Brewery.
• Visit Ka Lae, the southernmost tip of both the island and the entire United States.
• Spend a day wondering around the main city on Hawaii, Hilo – shopping and sightseeing.

Days 27 or 28 – Oahu

With a couple of days left you could extend your time in Hawaii, or on any other island before heading back to Oahu for a 1, 2 or more days before leaving Hawaii to head home.

Flight time from Hawaii to Oahu – Hilo, Hawaii to Honolulu, Oahu – 55 minutes and Kona, Hawaii to Honolulu, Oahu – 47 minutes.

Route 66 is synonymous as being one of the great road trips of the world. Hell, it has had songs written about it – Get Your Kicks on Route 66 was penned by Bobby Troup while driving on Route 66. It’s been mentioned in the novel ‘The Grapes of Wrath’  and people come from all over the world to discover why a road trip on Route 66 is so special. Well if you are planning to drive Route 66, then here are some great things to see and do on your Route 66 road trip.

Thanks to a car-friendly culture and an unrivalled network of highways, taking a road trip across America is very appealing. And if you are looking for inspiration for a USA road trip look no further than Route 66. This great American road trip starts in Chicago and ends at Santa Monica Pier in California. Of course, you can do the trip in reverse or even deviate off the road. 

This Route 66 itinerary is a 1 month driving itinerary in the USA so you will need a vehicle. This could be a car or a van. If you don’t have one you can rent one, get availability and a great rate here. If you aren’t taking your accommodation with you such as in a van, you will need to find accommodation at each nightly stop. I haven’t recommended accommodation places in this road trip as you may pull into a town and decide to stay. Route 66 or ‘Mother Road’ is basically a road, but not just any old road, it is one of America’s original highways having its original beginnings in 1926. Route 66 crosses 8 states. Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. It stopped being a highway in the 1950s when it was replaced by freeways that were quicker to travel on to get you where you wanted to go. But you can still travel on parts of Route 66.

What is the Speed Limit along Route 66?

The speed limits vary along Route 66 between 35 to 65 mph.

Where to Start or End Your Road Trip Route 66?

Route 66 starts or ends in Chicago in Illinois and starts or ends in Santa Monica in Los Angeles, California. It is up to you where you start and finish, and you don’t necessarily need to start or finish in Chicago or Santa Monica. You can drive just some parts of it as it is so long and travels across two thirds of the USA.

How Long is Route 66 & How Long to Drive it?

It’s distance is 2,448 miles or 3940 km long and would take around 52 hours, that’s a couple of days, to drive it if you drove non-stop. But as well as being a great way to travel across America it has a lot to see along the way. I suggest maybe 3-4 weeks so you can stop and visit many of the best and iconic spots along the way and those you want to deviate off Route 66 too. 

Best Time to Drive Route 66

Anytime is a good time to drive along Route 66 though many say late Spring to early Summer is the best time. This is because the weather is nicer and the road and most businesses along the road are open.

What is the Best Vehicle to Drive Route 66?

Some say a classic road requires a classic car. If you cannot get your hands on a Ford Mustang or a Chevrolete Corvette, then any car or Winnebago will do.

Where to Stay Along Route 66

I’ve established that Route 66 is long and cannot be drive in a day, therefore you will need accommodation at some point along Route 66. Now Route 66 having such a long history has many historic, quaint and quirky hotels you can stay in along the road. Some of them aren’t on the internet and you can only find stay at them by driving past. The best way to ensure you have accommodation is to book through a third party site such as Booking.com. 

Best Places to See Along Route 66 – East to West

Illinois

Route 66 Distance: Chicago, Illinois to border of Missouri – around 300 miles or 484km.

Chicago

First stop is the Windy City – Chicago. This is where Route 66 begins and ends if you are travelling west to east. And you can’t do a road trip without starting somewhere. It is well worth your while to spend a few days in Chicago. And will it be windy? Well, based on early records, the nickname originated from windstorms in the area and also because it was thought, some people were known for being full of hot air! 

Best things to see and do in Chicago

• Start your visit to Chicago on the Hop-on Hop-off Bus Tour which will take you to all the best spots in Chicago. Then you can choose which ones you wish to return to.
• Relax in Grant and Millennium Parks. Both parks are great to relax in, have a picnic or walk around.
• Enjoy a Deep-dish Pizza. Chicago is known for deep-dish pizzas so definitely try this local favourite.

Say goodbye to Chicago.

Start your Route 66 drive at the sign on the northwest corner of Adams Street and Michigan Avenue.

Why not get a photo if you can to commemorate the beginning of this iconic USA road trip journey. Leaving Chicago the road heads southwest through rural Midwestern towns. There are plenty of classic motel neon, vintage petrol stations, classic diners and historic bridges along the way till you get to the Mississippi River and East St. Louis. You may even spot a few Muffler Men! But first, enjoy some ice cream and learn more about Abraham Lincoln while in Illinois.

If you scream for ice cream parlors, then this college town on Route 66 is an absolute must-lick! Located in Illinois, Carl’s Ice Cream is a whimsical wonderland of frozen delights. 

You will be impressed with the historic exterior where a towering 15-foot statue awaits with a man clutching an ice cream cone in one hand and a cheeseburger in the other. These statues are known as Muffler Men because they were built strong to withstand nature’s elements and steal the spotlight in advertisements. 

We stopped here for lunch and enjoyed a salad, grilled chicken sandwich with fries, and ice cream, of course!  Carl’s Ice Cream isn’t just a piece of nostalgia, it’s a roadside haven for travelers.

In addition to soft-serve ice cream cones, they have malts, frozen yogurt, freeze pops, novelty ice cream sandwiches, and frozen lattes on the menu. We loved the variety of ice cream flavors.  Everything is prepared on order, even the salads!  The food is good but because it is prepared fresh, however, it took a bit longer than normal.

A must-stop destination on the historic Route 66 and in Central Illinois is the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Illinois. The museum takes visitors on an amazing journey through time, immersing in the life of one of America’s greatest leaders. From his childhood to his tragic assassination, every aspect of Abraham Lincoln’s remarkable story was vividly brought to life.

Walking through the exhibits made me feel like being transported to the past. The museum recreates scenes from Lincoln’s life with the combination of artifacts, multimedia presentations and interactive displays. As a result, it makes learning about his life as well as this period in American history engaging to visitors of all ages.

The exhibits not only shed light on Lincoln’s personal life, career and achievements but also offer an overview of the Civil War and its significance. The show “Ghosts of the Library” is a highlight at the museum. Visitors will also get to explore the tragic events surrounding his assassination, understand the circumstances leading to it and the nation’s mourning.

Overall, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum is one of the best places to learn about the life and legacy of Abraham Lincoln. Don’t miss the chance to stop by while you are on Route 66. History enthusiasts, families and museum lovers will enjoy this place. The Lincoln Home National Historic Site is also within walking distance from the museum.

You cannot miss the Gateway Arch standing tall in St Louis

A great place to visit along Route 66 is the city of St. Louis.  With numerous sites to see and experiences to have, St. Louis is a great place to spend a day or even two along Route 66.

No trip to St. Louis is complete without a visit to the 630 foot tall Gateway Arch. The Gateway Arch is a monument built to recognize westward expansion. Take a ride to the top of the arch for great views of the city and the Mississippi River. Learn historical information about St. Louis and its significance during the westward expansion. Swing by the Old Courthouse to see where the Dred Scott case was heard, and consider taking a boat ride along the Mississippi River to see where it connects with the Missouri River. If you’re in town during baseball season, catch a Cardinals game at Busch Stadium.

St. Louis is a fun town filled with both historical significance and modern day fun and activities.  Enjoy your time there!

Kansas

Route 66 Distance Across Kansas: 12.8 miles (21 km)

Route 66 passes through the USA state of Kansas but the road is only 12.8 miles long. So your visit to Kansas is short and sweet, and if you don’t stop, you may only be in the state for half an hour or so. The route passes through three towns – Galena, Riverton, and Baxter Springs. Galena is home to Kan-O-Tex, the gasoline station from Disney’s Cars movie. There is also a bronze marker from 1952 that promotes the Warner Brothers film ‘The Will Rogers Story’. So you could extend your half hour visit by stopping to see a few interesting things or trying a bit of Turkey hunting before moving on to Oklahoma.

Cheeky Blue Whale of Catoosa

My favorite stop on Route 66 is the Blue Whale of Catoosa. It is located in Catoosa, which is just 10 minutes outside of Tulsa, Oklahoma. The massive blue whale sits in a pond just off the highway. Its size is truly impressive, especially considering it was handmade by one grandfather for his family. The pond is a great place to cool off on a hot day. There are picnic tables nearby if you want to enjoy a snack. You can also catch and release fish there if you want. My favorite part of the whale is climbing inside and seeing the handiwork and love that went into its creation. There’s just something about the smiling Blue Whale that will also bring a smile to your face. It truly embodies classic Americana. Pops is a gas station?! What?! Yes, it is a gas station, however, it is one of the coolest gas stations on Route 66. It is called pops because it offers over 700 different flavors of soda! Most of these are in glass bottles.  

My kids love collecting the pop bottles.  Each time we visit, we typically buy a six-pack. We love to try all the orange sodas, or root beer flavors and judge which one tastes the best. There are some very unique flavors available as well as normal flavors you will find everywhere else.

Pops also has a diner, which serves up some delicious all-American food.  If you are traveling along Route 66, this is the perfect place to eat.  If you need a break there is outdoor seating and a large area where your kids can run around and play.  Pops is one of the best things to do in OKC with kids.

The best part about Pops is the iconic sign out front. It is a 66-foot neon sign in the shape of a pop bottle.  At night it glows brightly! It is a modern-day roadside attraction you have to visit along Route 66.

I highly recommend taking the time to visit Pops and picking out some of the unique soda options and getting the perfect pic in front of the POPS sign!

Texas

One of the best road trips in the USA is Route 66! This US road trip is 2448 miles long and stretches from Chicago, all the way to Los Angeles. How long does it take to do Route 66? Ideally it’s best to take at least 2 weeks. There is so much to see and do you could easily take twice as long to complete it! Our total drive time was 85 hours (including stops). There were a couple of days where we were on the road for 12 hours getting from A to B!

Some highlights of the route include the giant roadside attractions. The Blue Whale in OK. Cadillac Ranch in TX  where 10 Cadillac cars are half buried in the ground that people are able to spray paint. Staying in a concrete wigwam in AZ and finally, the Oatman Highway segment. The Disney Pixar ‘Cars’ movie is based on real life people and places along the route, which brings another fun element to the road trip!

It’s very easy to add side trips while driving along Route 66. Many people opting to visit Santa Fe in New Mexico, the Grand Canyon or Las Vegas. But a highlight is the Cadillac Range.

New Mexico

New Mexico in the Southwest has a combination of hot springs, forests, deserts and mountains to explore. Throw in great food, art galleries and museums. Maybe even take a drive down the Turquoise Trail – a scenic byway connecting Santa Fe to Albuquerque. It commemorates the state’s mining history. Some other favourite spots to enjoy in New Mexico:

Located just off of historic Route 66, in Santa Fe, NM, is the beautiful and tranquil Ojo Santa Fe Hot Springs. This is a spot you can’t miss when driving through New Mexico’s Route 66!

This is a must-see for anyone looking to recharge in the beauty of nature during the long drive. At Ojo Hot Springs, visitors can unwind and relax in the calm atmosphere created by the bubbling hot springs nestled within a scenic forest. The warm waters of the springs are said to have healing properties that can help soothe aches, pains and stress.

With several pools available, each with its own unique temperature and characteristics, guests can choose the perfect spot to immerse themselves in the rejuvenating waters. In addition to the hot springs, the resort features a variety of amenities such as a sauna with essential oil aromatherapy, yoga and meditation rooms, and delicious dining.

Spending a day or two relaxing and recharging at Ojo Hot Springs on your Route 66 road trip is an experience not to be missed.

Albuquerque

Wander the streets of Albuquerque

Albuquerque, New Mexico is undoubtedly one of my favorite places on Route 66. It has so much history and character, it’s one of those places that almost feels like you’ve left the country. Located in the heart of the state, Route 66 runs right through ABQ as they call it.

With an abundance of local attractions there is no shortage of fun things to do, so I’d suggest spending the night. Or a few. Albuquerque claims to be the ballooning capital of the world. So, stay at a hotel where you can see them lining the sky in the early hours of the morning like Sandia Hotel.

My preferred activity is to walk around the Old Town admiring the Pueblo-style architecture, the beautiful pottery, paintings and local jewelry. It’s a great way to discover the best of Albuquerque’s Southwestern art and it’s history.

I also recommend checking out Albuquerque Breweries on a non-driving day, of course. In ABQ they offer a glimpse into local life and some will have live music or other activities nightly. The craft beer scene is definitely happening here and many of these breweries have great food too. 

But there are many great restaurants too! Taste the authentic flavors of New Mexican cuisine at the historic High Noon Restaurant and Saloon whose building dates back to 1785. Also try the ABQ favorites Mary and Tito’s and the Frontier Restaurant, which looks like a barn and has been in business since 1971. You can’t go wrong!

Arizona

You will know you’ve crossed from New Mexico into Arizona when you see the large, bright white Teepee Trading Post advertising jewelry, pottery, kachinas and southwest souvenirs. This is a good little place to pull over to use the restroom, grab some food and a drink and maybe load up on souvenirs.

Petrified Forest National Park

Located along the Arizona portion of Route 66, Petrified Forest National Park is one of the most popular places to explore. The National Park protects incredible desert ecosystems as well as the petrified forest parts of the park as well. Visitors can explore hiking trails through quite a few petrified forest areas as well as old mesas and interesting geological formations.

There’s lots of opportunities for front and backcountry hiking. However, much of the park is designated for day-use only except for some backcountry camping opportunities. There’s quite a few interesting pueblos that can be explored in the area. Ones that used petrified forest pieces for construction.

There’s a small Route 66 display within the park that signifies where the historic Route 66 passed through the current park. The old route cut through the middle of the park near where the current Route I-40 now lies.

Collecting petrified forest pieces in the Petrified Forest park is prohibited. There are opportunities to purchase polished pieces collected outside the park from the gift shops.

Page

Horseshoe Bend

Page, AZ is a bit longer of a detour off Route 66 at 2 hours of driving time but well worth it! In Page, you will find 3 of the most iconic sites in America: Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Canyon, and Lake Powell.

If you can stay in Page overnight, you’ll have enough time to visit all three sites over the course of a day and a half. Otherwise, you could see two of the sites in a short day detour.

The Colorado River has created the breathtaking natural wonder known as Horseshoe Bend. To visit Horseshoe Bend, you will pay a fee per car to park at the parking lot and then walk 3/4ths of a mile to the viewpoint. The path is spacious, has gentle slopes, and is stroller and wheelchair friendly.

Antelope Canyon is a collection of slot canyons with magnificent sandstone formations that are famous for their distinct and other-worldly appearance. The canyons are on Navajo Nation land and must be visited with a certified guide. This is to protect the formations.

Lastly, Lake Powell is the second largest man-made lake in North America. It has over 2,000 miles of shoreline and a beautiful backdrop of buttes, which makes for an epic kayaking or camping experience. You can also take a boat tour and explore some of the most remote areas around the lake.

Page, AZ is a must-see destination a couple of hours off Route 66 and offers plenty of awesome activities!

Grand Canyon

Not on Route 66, but 4 hours or so north – yes, you will need to deviate, but this is a great deviation – is the Grand Canyon National Park.

If you’re looking for the best stops along Route 66 then you cannot beat a side trip to the Grand Canyon.

After all, the Grand Canyon is easily one of the most famous national parks in the world and is home to stunning layers of multi-colored rock that can be seen from Mather Point, Yavapai Observation Station, and Desert View Watchtower.

And while the Grand Canyon isn’t located directly on Route 66, it sits only 54 miles north of Williams and 75 miles northwest of Flagstaff.

Therefore, make a side trip to this awe-inspiring place so that you can see this mile-deep canyon in Arizona and enjoy some of the best viewpoints along the Grand Canyon.

Plus, you can easily do the 25-mile-long  Desert View Drive. It begins in Grand Canyon Village along the South Rim and takes you past Navajo Point, Moran Point, and Grandview Point where you can watch the sunset.

However, if you need a bit of exercise then try the Bright Angel Trailhead to Indian Garden Campground. Not only are the views and scenery stunning, but it’s one of the safer trails in the park due to the presence of rangers in the area.

Kingman

There are so many Route 66 stops in Arizona it’s easy to include them in your road trip plans. Kingman, Arizona is situated along the route in between several other locations. Like Oatman and Seligman, and about 100 miles from Las Vegas, so it’s the perfect stop for your Route 66 road trip.

I was excited to see so many unique Route 66 signs, museums and building murals throughout the city of Kingman. You can get your Arizona Route 66 passport stamped at the Kingman Visitor’s Center. This is one of the city’s main attractions which also houses a museum and gift shop offering many awesome souvenirs. In its parking lot, you can participate in the best photo opp ever. By driving your car underneath the Kingman arch to make it seem like your car is a part of the old-fashioned “Mother Road.”  You definitely will want to include Kingman on your Route 66 itinerary.

Peggy Sue’s 50’s Diner was built in 1954 and was later renovated and reopened in 1987. The diner is one of the best stops on Route 66 for several reasons including its history and its decor. Just like some of the historical hotels on Route 66, Peggy Sue’s 50’s Diner is decorated in a vintage and retro style. In the diner, you’ll find counter stools, tables and booths just like in the movies. The walls of Peggy Sue’s are covered in frames with historical images and photos that some would call Route 66 memorabilia. The diner features several rooms, jukeboxes and replicas of famous American singers. On the outside, the diner looks like a giant jukebox which immediately immerses you in the 50’s. The diner also serves delicious American food like pancakes and fried chicken!

Peggy Sue’s 50’s Diner is located in Yermo, on the Californian section of Route 66. It is easily accessible from Route 66 and visitors can park on a large parking lot.

Paramount Studios, Hollywood

Even if you’re not a major movie buff taking a detour off Route 66 to tour Paramount Studios is a must-do activity! Paramount is headquartered in Hollywood and has been home to some of the most popular films and TV series like The Transformers, Mission Impossible, American Horror Story, and many more.

The guided tour takes you behind the scenes on famous sets and up close and personal to celebrity-worn costumes and popular props. The guide will also explain how they’ve been able to turn parking lots into vast oceans and turn an ordinary street into NYC or London.

After your tour, head just a couple of blocks down the street from Paramount Studios to Café Gratitude for all-day brunch faves, hearty veggie-packed bowls, and more — it’s one of the best vegan restaurants in LA.

Santa Monica Pier

Santa Monica Pier with its iconic Route 66 ‘End of the Trail’ sign is one of the best spots to visit on Route 66. Out of all the things to do in Los Angeles, the pier always comes at the top of every list. Santa Monica Pier sits on the most beautiful part of Californian coast. The Malibu mountains visible to the right and the coast snaking down towards San Diego to the left. The pier itself houses the famous Pacific Park. This is the west coast’s only amusement park on a pier. Right next to it is Bubba Gump Shrimp where you can taste fresh seafood while watching the sun set behind the ocean. Two steps down from the restaurant you will find people tanning, playing volleyball or surfing in the barreling water of Southern California on Santa Monica Beach. Santa Monica Pier is the only stop on Route 66 with ocean, sand and fun right at its doorstep!

Seeing the Hollywood Sign should definitely be on your ‘Best Things to do in LA’ list

Who would have thought that nine white letters on top of a hill could become LA’s most iconic sight? And it is a sight everyone wants to see, particularly on a first visit to Los Angeles. The sign was originally created as an advertisement for a local real estate agency and nowadays it appears in many movies and TV as an establishing shot. I mean, who doesn’t know they are in LA when they see the Hollywood sign! 

The sign is visible from many places across LA but many like to climb up to the top of the sign for a panoramic view of the city and for a selfie! To get there, you can hike from Griffith Observatory (next on my best things to do in Los Angeles post) or follow the trail starting at the Bronson Canyon entrance to Griffith Park. Do the hike as early as you can as the trail can sometimes get pretty busy!

Griffith Observatory

Griffith Observatory is a world-famous observatory with some amazing interactive exhibits inside and outside offers fabulous views over Los Angeles and provides some great hiking trails. You will find it in the city of Los Angeles up on Mount Hollywood in Griffith Park. So you could visit the Hollywood sign and the observatory together. There is free entrance with parking becoming scarce quite quickly but you can easily take the cheap DASH shuttle located at the bottom of the hill up to the observatory.

Griffith Observatory is open Tuesday through Friday from 12 to 10pm and on weekends from 10am to 10pm. You can go anytime within this timeframe though if you went at night you can peer through the large telescopes out into the cosmos! How cool! Budget around 3 hours at Griffith Observatory to enjoy all it has to offer. If you want to go to the planetarium show you will need to purchase a ticket.

Walk of Fame and Hollywood Boulevard

Who hasn’t seen photos of celebrities posing next to their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame? I mean, there is always a new one being reported on many different TV shows! Well the Hollywood Walk of Fame is probably the most famous sidewalk in the world and you can walk down it to see the terrazzo and brass stars in this eternal tribute to celebrities who have left their mark on the entertainment industry. It’s great to walk along the sidewalk checking out the stars and even having your photo taken with one. And you will be walking for a while! There are some 2,600 stars with hundreds of foot and handprints featured over 1.3 miles of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street. TCL Chinese Theatre

The TCL Chinese Theatre is definitely a ‘not to miss’ when in LA particularly if this is your first time to Los Angeles. It is located on Hollywood Boulevard alongside the Hollywood Walk of Fame. This spot draws many tourists from around the world to see it. The theatre is where some of the most prominent movie premieres have occurred since 1927. And where some of the biggest movie stars have walked the red carpet. In what is called the Forecourt of the Stars you can put your own hands in the imprints of some of the most famous names in the movie industry. So much fun. You can explore this part for free but you can go on a tour of the theatre at a cost of $10 per person and it lasts around 30 mins.

Universal Studios

A must visit on your first trip to Los Angles is Universal Studios.

Universal Studios, is one of the top theme parks in Southern California. You can walk around or take the cable car tour around the studio and discover the movie sets including the largest street movie set in Hollywood. Then perhaps go on one of the 21 rides. Perhaps the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey for some wizardry magic! Visit the Universal Studios website for details and to plan your visit. There is so much to see and do at Universal Studios that I would plan on spending at least the whole day here. If you have time you could also do the Warner Brothers Studio tour too!

Disneyland

Disneyland in Anaheim, Los Angeles as one of the ‘happiest places on earth’! Your trip to LA will never be complete without a day at Disneyland. Definitely arrive at the main gate to enter. This is a great photo opportunity. While entering, pick up a map of Disneyland as it will show you where all the ‘different lands’ are, the rides, restaurants and cafes and toilets. Or you can download one from the Disneyland website here.

On entering Disney you will be in Main Street where there are plenty of shops and where the grand parade is held each day. And in the distance is the Disneyland Castle we all know and love that was based on the Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany. There are different worlds inside Disneyland to enjoy. From Fantasy Land to Frontier Land to the Star Wars Land, there is a land for everyone to enjoy. I hope you can enjoy them all. Be aware to go on the rides, there are often long queues and you may want to buy your ticket to ride in advance so you can jump the queues. Visit the Disneyland website for the different tickets available.

Spend the whole day in Disneyland to see the Disneyland Castle during the day and at night.

Shop Till You Drop on Rodeo Drive

You cannot come to Los Angeles and not go shopping. A must do on any Los Angeles visit is to visit the upscale neighbourhood of Beverly Hills. Here you will find Rodeo Drive where all the celebrities go shopping. Within the three blocks are over 100 world-renowned retailers. So if you are after something stylish and high-end, then Rodeo Drive is a must shop destination. 

If you prefer more affordable fashion and accessories check our Santee Alley in downtown Los Angeles. In this fashion district you will find a flea market plus many merchants selling garments, footwear, accessories and cosmetics. All at more affordable prices.

Discover Santa Monica Pier and other Beaches

Santa Monica is known for its Pier

Spend a day while in Los Angeles discovering its beaches, in particular the famous Santa Monica Pier at Santa Monica. You have probably seen the pier on many tv shows as it is, like the Hollywood sign another iconic spot in Los Angeles. 

Santa Monica Pier is a full-service amusement park with many awesome attractions, souvenir shops and numerous bars and restaurants. After all, it is 3.5 miles (5.6 km) long. Built in 1909 the pier was the first concrete pier on the USA West Coast so its super strong to hold all the rides and things on the pier. One of the most popular attractions is the solar powered red and yellow Ferris wheel. It is free into Pacific Park though there is a charge to go on the rides and enter some attractions. Budget between $5-$12 per ride and/or attractions. Santa Monica Pier is open daily from 10am to 8pm so you could spend a long time here.

After spending possibly a morning on the pier you can walk to nearby beaches including the quirky Venice Beach where you could relax on the sand. Or maybe go roller skating.  

End your day in one of the many restaurants enjoying a good ‘Clam Chowder’. This was the first place I ever tried Clam Chowder, and from that day, I was sold, and enjoy it often. 

You can take public buses to reach the beach or you could go on a tour. No matter how you decide to get there, Santa Monica Pier and Venice Beach need to be part of every Los Angeles itinerary as it is one of the best things to see and do.

My Suggested 6 Day Los Angeles Itinerary

How long should you visit LA for? Who knows, is my answer. It will depend on what you want to see and do. If it is your first time, and you have the time I would suggest at least 6 days. Here is my suggested itinerary for Los Angeles for a 6 day visit.

Days
1 – Arrive and go on Hop-on Hop-off LA Tour, Walk the Walk of Fame and visit the TCL Chinese Theatre
2 – Hollywood Sign, Griffith Observatory
3 – Disneyland
4 – Universal Studios
5 – Santa Monica Pier, Venice Beach and Malibu
6 – Shop till you drop

Where to Stay in Los Angeles

Los Angeles is a sprawling city and therefore has lots of areas to stay in. Here is my overview of the best areas to stay in Los Angeles to help you choose where to stay during your visit to LA. There is something for every budget. As you will be staying a few days in Los Angeles consider booking accommodation with cooking facilities available so you can cook some meals to save some dollars.

1. Los Angeles Downtown – great area to stay in for travellers without a car and who are after the nightlife. LA Downtown is centrally located for museums, trendy restaurants and live clubs. Some suggestions:

3. Hollywood – great area to stay in Los Angeles for first-time visitors to Los Angeles. The iconic LA neighbourhood is centrally located to get to the emus-see LA tourist attractions of Hollywood Boulevard, Walk of Fame, TCL Chinese Theatre and more. Some suggestions:
   Hostel: SameSun Hollywood or Banana Bungalow Hollywood
   Mid-range Hotel: Elaine’s Hollywood Bed & Breakfast.

4. West Hollywood – if you are seeking the Los Angeles nightlife when West Hollywood is a great area to stay for music, entertainment and nightlife. Some suggestions:

Aloha. Hawaii is one of my favourite places in the world. I could see myself retiring there! Along with the food, the Hawaiian culture, macadamia nut chocolates and Mai Tais my favourite thing to do when in Hawaii is to spend time at the beaches. Hanauma Bay, Oahu

The crescent shaped beach that is Hanauma Bay is one of the most beautiful beaches in Hawaii. Located on the island of Oahu, this beach is extremely popular and for good reason.

Boasting some of the best snorkeling on the island, the coral reefs here are teeming with hundreds of species of marine life. The turquoise clear waters make for a stunning view from the parking lot as well as from the sand. Non-snorkelers will also enjoy the calm waters for swimming and the spacious sand makes for the perfect place to spend all day and picnic.

Amenities at this beach are plentiful, including restrooms, a snack bar, lockers for personal belongings, and snorkel rentals.

Paid reservations are required in advance online allowing limited entries per day. Visitors are required to watch a conservation video to help preserve the beauty of the bay. Lanikai Beach, Oahu

If you are looking for the best beach in Hawaii, look no further than Lanikai beach in Oahu. This is one of the most beautiful and kid-friendly beaches on the island.

 Lanikai is on the east side of Oahu in the Kailua neighborhood. Finding the beach isn’t difficult, but parking is a nightmare.

This beach is nestled in a residential area, so you have to park on the street and walk to the beach using paths in between houses. Trust us, the parking nightmare is worth spending a few hours at this picturesque beach. There are no restrooms, lifeguards, or concessions stands, so you should bring food and use the facilities before heading to the beach.

I love this beach because it is calm and warm, and the sand is powdery and soft. It is the perfect place to take in the beauty of Oahu.

During the week, this beach is nearly empty. You will likely see neighborhood residents walking their dogs along the shore. If you want to beat the crowds, I recommend going to Lanikai Monday – Thursday afternoons.

Laniakea Beach, Oahu

I think one of the coolest beaches in Hawaii is Laniakea Beach in North Shore Oahu. Its nickname is “Turtle Beach” because you will most likely see a bunch of sea turtles in the water and lounging in the sand. And that’s the main reason why you’ll want to stop off at Laniakea Beach. It’s seriously amazing something you’ll want to add to your Hawaii bucket list! There’s actually a large parking lot off the side of the road, but it fills up quickly. I’d definitely suggest visiting Laniakea Beach early in the morning for fewer crowds. And don’t ever touch the turtles or even get close, as that’s illegal.

Pipeline, Oahu

A visit to the North Shore is a worth inclusion on every Oahu itinerary. Ehukai Beach park is one of Hawaii’s most well-known beaches that you’ve probably never heard of, because everyone just calls it Pipeline.

As the colloquial name implies, this beach is famous for its surfing. A reef break off the beach causes huge waves to break in shallow water, forming large curls for surfers to ride through. It is the location for some of the worlds top surfing competitions, including the Pipeline Masters.

The beach also happens to be a spectacular spot to catch the Hawaiian sun sinking over the ocean. No visit to the North Shore is complete without stopping at the famous shrimp food trucks.

Sunset Beach (Oahu)

One of the nicest beaches on the north shore of Oahu island would have to be Sunset Beach, which has a beautiful 2 mile (3 kilometer) stretch of white sand. During the summer months, the water at Sunset Beach is flat. While the winter months are popular for big wave surfing (recommended for experienced surfers only).

As the name implies, Sunset Beach is a great place to see the sunset in Oahu. There’s even a photogenic bent palm tree that’s become a popular picture spot on the north shore. All in all, a visit to this beach is definitely one of the best things to do in Oahu, Hawaii!

Waikiki Beach, Honolulu, Oahu

One of the world’s most famous and picturesque beaches, Waikiki Beach is a must-visit destination when heading to Hawaii. Located on the south shore of Oahu in central Honolulu, Waikiki is stunning both for the towering hotels, apartment buildings, and restaurants that line the beachfront and the destination’s natural beauty.

With over two miles of white sand and stunningly clear water, you’re bound to find what you’re looking for here. If you’re interested in water sports, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved, even trying surfing, though the waves are gentle enough for swimmers. Home to the famous Hilton Hawaiian Village, Waikiki has plenty of accommodation options for travelers of all budgets. You’ll never be more than a few blocks from the beach while staying here!

Best Beaches on the Big Island, Hawaii

Green Sand Beach, Hawaii

One of the most unique beaches in all of Hawaii is the Green Sand Beach. It is one of only four green sand beaches on the planet! The access point to the beach is approximately equidistant from either Kona or Hilo and is located along the southern coast of the island of Hawaii. Actually just minutes away from the southernmost point in the United States! 

To get to Green Sand Beach there’s a 5.8-mile roundtrip hike to the beach. While some visitors have complained the hike is flat and boring, I think the endless views of the rocky coastline and, beyond, the Pacific Ocean are unbeatable. Upon reaching the beach, I fell in love with the uniquely-colored sand, turquoise water, and serious waves, which are perfect for boogie boarding or body surfing.

Hapuna Beach Park, Big Island

The Big Island’s largest white sand beach is about 40 minutes North of Kona, Hawaii. It’s great for body boarding, snorkeling, swimming, and sunbathing. 

We like this beach because there’s something for everyone. Staying at Hapuna Prince, we got to visit during our honeymoon and then returned years later during a family reunion. From babies to grandkids, everyone enjoyed this beach. Restrooms and showers are available on site. There’s a large parking lot, which can fill up by mid-day on holidays and weekends. (Currently $5 per car.)

Best Beaches on Maui

Big Beach (Makena Beach), Maui

When it comes to picture, perfect postcard Hawaiian beaches, Big Beach takes the cake. Located on the South part of Maui, Big Beach also known as Makena Beach is one of the best beaches in Maui.  

Known for its impressive views and long shoreline, the wide sandy beach is a popular beach for tourists and locals alike.  The main draw here is the undeveloped beauty and wide open spaces. So regardless of how busy the beach is you still can find space and privacy.  

Big Beach has a powerful shore break which makes it a popular beach for boogie boarders.  On North side of the beach you can climb up the rocks for epic views of the massive beach below.  Continuing down the other side of the rocks leads you to Little Beach – Maui’s most famous nude beach!

Honokalani Beach, Maui

If you’re looking for a breathtaking and serene Hawaiian beach to enjoy, Honokalani is the perfect spot. With its black sand beaches and crystal-clear waters, it’s no wonder this beach is a favorite among locals and visitors alike.

Honokalani Beach is located on the island of Maui at Wai’ānapanapa State Park and is one of the few black sand beaches on Maui. You’ll find Honokalani along the famous Road to Hana, just before you reach Hana Town. You will need a reservation to visit Wai’ānapanapa State Park, which you can obtain from the Hawaii State Park Website.

There is plenty to do at Honokalani Beach, from swimming and sunbathing to hiking and exploring the park’s lava tubes, blowholes, and caves. The surf can be dangerous here, and there are no lifeguards, so be sure and practice safety when swimming here. There is a large area for picnicking as well, so you can bring a lunch and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

The contrast between the black sand, green cliffs, and turquoise waters is so visually stunning that Honokalani Beach will be one of the prettiest beaches you have ever seen.

Kaanapali Beach, Maui

Kaanapali Beach, on the west coast of the island of Maui, is my favorite Hawaiian beach to visit. This gorgeous beach strikes that difficult balance between having plenty of things to do, while still feeling like a relaxing tropical beach. I love the stunning, lush resorts lining the beach and the paved beach walk underneath the palms. Also, the three different luaus that show every night, and Whalers Village, an open air shopping complex with local and luxury brands. 

One thing Kaanapali is known for is Black Rock. This rocky outcropping juts into the water on the north end. Legend states that the last chief of Maui proved his spiritual strength by jumping from the top of the rock into the ocean. Every night, there’s a short, free Sunset Ceremony, where a Hawaiian young man recreates that climb and dive. In short, Kaanapali is a pristine Hawaiian beach with many exciting activities to enjoy!

Kapalua Beach, Maui

Located on the north western side of Maui, Kapalua Beach is a small cove beach. It is the perfect spot for active couples or families because of its incredible snorkeling, just be sure to bring your own snorkel gear! Personally, I can’t sit still on the beach for long, and am always looking for the best active things to do on Maui. You can always spot tons of bright and beautiful fish, like the Hawaiian state fish the humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa.  But the best part is there’s a really great chance you will get to hang out with a turtle or two as well!

Be sure to get to this beach early in the morning, as the free parking does fill up quickly.  There is a paid lot with plenty of parking though, if you’d rather sleep in, or grab breakfast at the famous Gazebo Restaurant on your way.
