Many of us like to spend our vacation lazing by a beach or skiing in the mountains but some, like to work while on vacation. And working as a volunteer is just one way to work on holiday. And a popular volunteer option is volunteering on an archaeological dig. So unleash your inner Indiana Jones and find your own Temple of Doom! Sound tempting? Well, it’s possible if you go on an archaeological dig as a volunteer. How? Read on.

You don’t need to be on a working holiday visa, living and working abroad on a digital nomad visa or travelling full-time to volunteer on an archaeological dig, you could be working full-time and volunteer for your holiday. And great news is, you don’t need to be a qualified archaeologist.

What is an Archaeological Dig?

An archaeological dig, also known as an excavation, is the process of systematically digging up and removing earth to uncover and study historical or prehistoric remains, artifacts, and structures. Items dug up allows us to understand past human life and culture in a particular area.

Why Go on an Archaeological Dig?

Most people go on an archaeological dig out of interest. There are some pros to going on an archaeological dig.

A dig can be a really fun thing to do.

Learn about past cultures.

Allows you to immerse yourself in a particular area that you will have time to explore.

You can also meet great people with a similar interest.

Where are Archaeological Digs?

There are many archaeological digs occurring at the same time around the world. They could be biblical archaeology in Israel, uncovering Mayan city ruins in Mexico, dinosaur bones in Queensland, rock art in Italy or Angkor empire households in Cambodia to name a few.

Types of Volunteer Roles

As a volunteer you will most likely:

Spend your time either excavating in a trench with an experienced archaeologist. This often involves carefully removing soil and debris to expose remains using tools like brushes and trowels.

Be in the house/tent helping with cleaning finds, cataloguing, drawing, photographing and packing delicate objects that are found.

Provide camp support such as with general site maintenance, cooking, or other tasks to support the overall operation.

How to Go on an Archaeological Dig?

If you have ever dreamt of uncovering a prehistoric animal bone or a trinket thousands of years old, then here is your chance. If you are wondering whether you need to be an archaeological student to go on a dig, well, you do not need to be an archaeological student to participate on a dig, you can be a volunteer who pays to go on one.

Digs are often seeking volunteers to help out. Don’t think it will be a party as often you are digging in dirt, sometimes mud in all weather. There could be loads of bugs and snakes and other natural things to cope with like living in a rainforest or desert during the dig.

How Do You Find a Volunteer Archaeological Dig Role?

Finding a dig may not be as hard as you think. Check out the following websites for archaeological digs.

Council for British Archaeology

Archaeological Institute of America

Projects Abroad

Volunteer Forever

Also check out universities with archaeology departments as they may offer field volunteer opportunities.

FAQs

Do you need to be fit to go on a dig?

Being physically fit can help provide stamina and the ability to work outdoors for extended periods doing repetitive work.

What commitment is required to go on a dig?

Some digs require a minimum stay eg. A week, a month or more, while some digs can be flexible.

Are there fees to go on a dig?

Many volunteer programs require a fee to cover costs such as accommodation and food.

Who pays for travel to and from the dig?

In most cases you are responsible for getting yourself to and from the dig.

Do I need a visa to go on a dig?

A visa is required depending on the country the dig is in.

What should you take on a dig?

The volunteer organisation should advise you on this. However, take appropriate clothing for the weather and oldish clothing as it will get dirty. Also take sun protection – a hat and sun screen.

Do you need skills and qualifications to go on a dig?

No, many volunteers are there because they have an interest but an appropriate job will be found for your skills.

What Visa is required to volunteer?

As you are not being paid you should be able to enter on a tourist visa. But check with the volunteer program in case a special visa is required.

Finally

Yes, participating in an archaeological dig as a volunteer is definitely a thing, a good thing. Many archaeological projects welcome volunteers, and it’s a great way to experience the field firsthand, even without prior experience or a degree. Are you ready to volunteer on an archaeological dig?

Are you already working remotely but dreaming of moving to another country as a digital nomad? Well, Digital nomad visas are now available in some 60 or so countries around the world. This makes them a very attractive option to legally live and work in another country – as long as you qualify for the visa. But as an added attraction some countries are offering visas for digital nomads with 0% tax. What? Zero percent tax! Tell me more.

After summarising digital nomad visas in another post, I have identified five digital nomad visas that offer zero taxes. Paying no tax is a big incentive to choose a country to live and work in on a digital nomad visa. And it doesn’t matter what digital nomad job you do either. Add cheap living and fast internet then these countries should be on your digital nomad radar. I know they are on mine!

The countries with visas for digital nomads with 0% tax are, in alphabetical order: Anguilla, Bermuda, Costa Rica, Croatia and Georgia.

Anguilla

Enjoy Caribbean island life when you choose Anguilla as a digital nomad visa destination. The visa is easy to apply for with no income requirements. There is quite a hefty fee associated with applying for the visa, being USD2,000 for individuals. And if you want to bring your family it is $3,000 per family to apply. So if you are a digital nomad family, this could be a good option. If you successfully get this visa you can stay for up to 12 months enjoying island life. And not have to pay tax on any income you earn. Sounds pretty good, don’t you think?

Bermuda

The Bermuda digital nomad visa has one of the lowest visa application fees in the Caribbean Islands with remote work visa programs and digital nomad visas – at only $263. Add there is no income restrictions to apply for the visa, yep, i like that! The Bermuda digital nomad visa can be very appealing for those seeking the Caribbean beach life. If you successfully get this visa you can stay for up to 12 months. And not have to pay tax on any income you earn. That will make enjoying Caribbean beaches, food and lifestyle even better!

Costa Rica

Costa Rica is an attractive digital nomad visa destination. This is mostly due to its low cost of living, fast internet speeds and not having to pay any taxes for 12 months on your income if you earn it from a company outside of the country. To get the visa though there are income requirements. You must be earning at least $3,000 per month consistently to qualify for the visa. But with it, you can live and work abroad in an incredible country in South America. What a great base to explore this part of the world.

Croatia

Croatia is very appealing to digital nomads due to its low cost of living, fast internet and proximity to its European neighbours. Becoming part of the Schengen Zone in 2023 makes travel to European neighbours a great option. Weekend in Paris anyone!

For the above reasons, Croatia is a popular digital nomad destination. To get the visa though there is an income requirement of $2,500 per month or prove you have $31,000 in savings. The digital nomad visa will let you stay for up to 12 months without having to pay any taxes if you earn income from a non-Croatian company.

Georgia

Last on my list of visas for digital nomads with 0% tax is Georgia. Georgia, in particular Tbilisi is proving to be a digital nomad hotspot due to the low cost of living, fast internet and proximity to travel throughout Europe.

To qualify you will need to be making at least $2000 per month or show you have $24,000 in your bank account.

Let’s just qualify the zero tax. You pay zero tax for the first 180 days on any income earned. After that, the top tax rate is 20% but if you receive the ’Small Business Status’ you will only pay 1% tax if you earn less than $184,000 per year. Confused? It can be so understand what is involved before you apply for the visa.

Are You Ready to Be a Digital Nomad Paying 0% Tax?

Being a digital nomad means you make your living from working online while travelling to different countries. And the more money you can make to fund your lifestyle the better. So not having to pay tax is a big bonus to take into account when applying for a digital nomad visa. When you don’t have to pay tax, there is more money in your pocket. Hopefully, more countries will follow suit with zero tax for digital nomads.

But it was when I was in my 20s that I left Australia and first moved abroad on my own. I had had a bad day at work, resigned, and one month later found myself standing at Heathrow Airport. I was about to start a UK working holiday wondering what to do next as I hadn’t weighed up the pros and cons of moving and living abroad.

I soon had a job, a place to live and met new people. But remember, sometimes you need to try it for yourself to know whether or not it is for you!

Pros of Living Abroad

1. Learn to Adapt

One of the biggest pros of living abroad, and why I have put it first is learning how to adapt. At home you know what to expect from life, you may be in a rut and feel complacent, but when you move abroad to live and work in a different country, there is so much to learn and adapt to. There is a different language, culture, food, types of work and different style of accommodation – and you need to adapt to them. Adapting to your surroundings and making do with what you have is one big life skill you learn when you move abroad.

2. Experience a New Culture

One of the biggest advantages of moving abroad to live in another country is that you get to immerse yourself in a new culture. You get to learn more about one culture and develop a greater understanding of how the people of your new country live. You develop a different perspective while living abroad which is wonderful for expanding your views. It can make you more open minded to how people do different things, eat different things, talk differently and have different customs to yourself. And this is a big part of moving abroad to live in another country.

3. Learn a New Language

I grew up in Australia where we all spoke English, but as Australia becomes more multicultural, more languages are being spoken. So in schools, you can learn different languages. When you go into high school, you are given a taste of a number of languages and then you can choose one to progress with throughout your schooling – if you so wish. I decided I would learn French, and this stood me in good stead as I visited France and was able to say hello, order food and pay for it without much trouble.

When I moved to the UK to live and work, I found myself visiting many European countries from my London base. I discovered that it is good to know a little of the language of the country I am visiting as it helps with immersion. Locals are more likely to spend time chatting to you if you have tried to speak to them in their own language. I found it much easier to learn a language when you’re abroad speaking it. It is definitely an advantage to learning the language of the country you have chosen to live in. It just helps you to settle into your new life living abroad if you make the effort.

4. Try Different Foods

One of the best pros of moving and living abroad is trying new foods – I just love the Paella I discovered in Spain

I think this is my favourite thing about living abroad – trying new and different foods. When I lived in the UK, I made it my mission to eat all of the local British food. Afternoon tea at the Ritz anyone! And when I went to Europe I tried all the local foods too. Snitzel in Austria, chips with mayo in Belgium, Bouillabaisse and pastries in France, pasta in Italy – shall I go on? Discovering the food of your adopted country is one of the best things about living abroad. And don’t go out to eat it all the time, why not take a local cooking class like I did.

5. Meet New People & Make Lifelong Friends

When I moved abroad I was hoping and expecting to meet lots of new people, but one of the things I least expected was to make lifelong friends. And one of those friends has become a life partner.

When you live abroad you will meet lots of different people. There will be work colleagues, house mates, travel partners and those you meet when totally not expecting it! Some will be short-term friends while others will become lifelong friends and partners. Some of the people that I met living abroad have become some of my closest friends. We don’t all live in the same city or country, but we keep in contact. Thank goodness for phones, email and social media making it easier to keep in touch.

6. Get Work Doing Something You’ve Never Done Before

If you aren’t being transferred overseas for work or moving from country to country as a digital nomad working remotely online, then you will most likely pick up work. Moving abroad can be one of the best ways to expand your opportunities that will look good on your CV.

When I moved abroad to live and work in the UK, I registered with a recruitment agency to do administration work. In no time I was being sent to different companies on a temporary basis. I mostly did PA (Personal Assistant) work, typing and data entry as I have a typing speed of around 80wpm. Then I thought I’d try something new and got a live-in job in a pub just outside of London where I worked for a summer. And then I took a live-in job as a nanny which took care of a job and a place to live all in the one hit! The skills I developed from doing these jobs has helped me to never be out of employment. This has definitely outweighed any cons of moving abroad for me.

me working abroad in a London office

7. Travel Opportunities

One of the best things of living abroad is the travel opportunities. Sure you may be studying or working but there will always be time to travel. When I worked in London, I had a weekend here, then a weekend there and then a few holidays here and there. I loved it being in a different city almost every weekend – discovering a new culture, meeting new people and enjoying the food!

8. Make Unforgettable Memories

Moving abroad leads to some of the best memories you’ll ever have. Even on a day to day basis while living in a foreign country you will make unforgettable memories. It is the little things that you often remember the most. How you conquered ordering food, navigated the tube in London in peak hour on your way to work or conquered customs of covering your head when entering mosques. There is something that you will remember from every day when living abroad in a foreign country.

9. Personal Growth

Personal growth is a huge pro of living abroad. Taking yourself out of your comfort zone and putting yourself in a new environment sees you grow as a person. You will constantly be facing challenges. Challenges you will confront and figure out and all these challenges can make you more independent and confident.

As a solo traveller who has moved abroad to live work and play somewhere in the world alone you only have yourself to rely on. When facing life abroad alone you have two choices. To grow as a person as you meet challenges or go home with your tail between your legs because it was ‘too hard’. Personal growth is good and will help you in the future. I credit moving abroad as being one of the best things I have ever done and the personal growth I acquired is still with me today.

10. Gain Skills for the Future

Moving abroad to live and work will help you to develop and gain skills for the future. You will try new things such as work, providing you with skills. You will meet new people helping you to develop social skills. These can help you in the future to navigate life.

11. Get New Travel Opportunities

I was introduced to hiking when I moved abroad

Having grown up at a beach, I was use to spending all my time in coastal areas enjoying the water. It wasn’t until I moved abroad that I was introduced to other types of activities during my travels. As well as visiting many places by different types of transport I discovered many activities – hiking for one. Moving abroad to another country allows you to have many travel experiences.

12. Start Afresh

There’s something to be said for starting afresh by moving abroad. You may have had a relationship breakdown, been sacked from you job, having a mid-life crisis – whatever is happening in your life, you can ‘run away’ to start afresh in another country. I have found travel and discovering new cultures abroad is a great way to help get over the past and move on – very liberating!

13. Discover Your Passions

I wouldn’t have become a travel writer / blogger full time without living abroad. You may have read in the ‘about me’ section on my website that I fell into travel writing. It was after a visit to Gallipoli, Turkey for ANZAC Day that a magazine in London was calling for travel articles. So I wrote about my trip to Turkey, it was published, and I was paid 25 pounds. I was hooked and so began my passion for travel writing and now travel blogging.

Living abroad also ignited passions for spicy flavoured foods and history – yeah I’ve become a history freak and love visiting old buildings that have lots of stories to tell! And you can find your passions to.

14. Freedom

Last on my list of pros to moving abroad is freedom. Freedom from the shackles of home and the freedom to do what you want, when you want. And the freedom to be yourself without judgement.

Cons of Living Abroad

As with everything in life, and moving abroad is no exception, there are disadvantages.

1. Lots of Paperwork

Yep, before you can start your life abroad there is plenty of paperwork. You need a passport, visa/s, transport bought, accommodation booked and travel insurance and travel gear to purchase. All this can be time consuming and laborious. It could take months to get these things sorted! And there is a cost involved. It costs to get a passport, a visa and to buy transport and accommodation plus the travel gear you will take. This can add up and cost a lot.

And when you get there, there is more paperwork. You need to register your existence, open a bank account, apply for a tax number if you are going to work and find a place to live. The bureaucracy of moving abroad is one disadvantage. And each time you move to a new country, you will have to go through it again – talk about groundhog day!

2. Packing up Sucks

Packing up is definitely a con of moving abroad. The worst part I find is making the decisions as to what to take and what to leave behind. It is also extremely time consuming and can be expensive buying stuff to take with you.

3. Culture Shock

Culture shock can be a big issue when you move abroad. Nothing can prepare you for the actual experience where nothing is the same as what you are use to. Culture shock is definitely a major con of living abroad. Even moving to a country that speaks the same language as you do, things will be done differently. Culture shock is a learning curve that throws a curve ball at even the most experienced of expats.

4. Language Barriers

Different languages can be a challenge when you move abroad. It is particularly a challenge if you move to a country that doesn’t speak your native tongue. You can have trouble settling in because you don’t understand what is being said to you. Finding a place to live and getting a job may prove difficult. This is why it is good to know some of the language of the country you are moving abroad to.

5. Moving is Expensive

Moving anywhere can be expensive, but add moving abroad costs – passport, visa fees, transport costs, medical tests and short-term accommodation while you find a longer term place to live.

Choosing to move abroad isn’t always cheap which is why this is a big consideration for some and often seen as a con to moving abroad. But if you want a new lifestyle living overseas and plan to get a job or continue working online as a digital nomad this cost is just part of the moving abroad process. I have moved to a number of countries and have never looked at the costs involved as a negative. I see them as just part of moving abroad. On saying that, it is a decision you need to make.

6. Homesickness

homesickness is natural

One of the biggest cons of living abroad is dealing with homesickness and even the most hardy of traveller at some times, feels homesick. The biggest times I felt homesick was at Christmas time, when it was birthdays and when my first nephew was born. I felt really bad for not being home for these special occasions. But you cannot not live your dreams of moving and living abroad for one or two days of a year! And if it gets to you too much – just go home.

7. Loneliness

Loneliness seems to be a real fear of many people. And yes, it is lonely moving abroad by yourself – but you can be by yourself and not be lonely. There were times when I lived abroad I felt loneliness. Other travellers I had met moved on and I had to start meeting other people again. When I felt lonely, I didn’t sit at home thinking to myself ‘I am so lonely’, I took myself out and did things. I wondered through museums, went to the zoo, went on a walking tour, took a cooking lesson – so I worked on not being lonely.

8. Finding Work can be Hard

One of the hardest things about moving abroad is giving up the security of your job, unless you are taking your job with you. There is the worry you will not find work abroad. And yes, it can be hard finding work as the work you can do is often defined by the visa you are on. If it is a working holiday visa, you may only be allowed to do typical ‘backpacker jobs’. If you are being sponsored, the work permit will only cover the job you are being sponsored to do. While if moving abroad on a digital nomad visa, you will have to continue working online generating income. Hopefully, you will have enough savings to support yourself until you find work. This is why I like finding a ‘live in job’ like being a nanny, working in a British pub or working in a caravan park as you not only get a job, but accommodation too!

9. Tax Implications

On the topic of work, when you work in another country there can be tax implications. You will need to find out whether you have to pay tax in the country you are working. Also whether you have to advise the tax office in your home country if you are receiving money in a different country. All this can be a big challenge and definitely a con when you move abroad. I recommend getting a tax accountant who understands the tax implications for people who work abroad. But there are countries where you pay zero tax if living and working on a digital nomad visa.

10. Where Will You Live

Having nowhere to live when you arrive in a new country can be quite traumatic and definitely is a con of moving abroad. However, there are plenty of places to live from short-term accommodation in hostels and hotels to longer-term accommodation in AirB&Bs to house sitting. It can just take time to find something suitable to suit your needs and that is within your budget. You need to know what type of accommodation you want.

11. Adapting to new rules and a new life

Last on my list of pros and cons of moving abroad is the final disadvantage of adapting to new rules and a new life. Every country has rules and regulations you will need to adapt to. Expats are often unsure of what to expect from their new country, soo it is a good idea to read up on the country you are moving to beforehand so you don’t do too many faux pars. My best advice is to embrace your new life abroad, learn everything you can, speak to the locals, learn to laugh at your mistakes and be respectful while you learn the new rules in your new life abroad.

Should You Move Abroad?

In my opinion, yes, you should move abroad. I believe everyone should live and work abroad at least once in their lifetime. The advantages far outweigh the disadvantages of moving abroad. Moving abroad was one of the best things I ever did and has helped me become the person I am today. Have you moved abroad? I’d love to hear.

I’ve been an online proofreader for over 5 years and a proofreader for over 20 years and have found many proofreading jobs in that time. If you are looking for a way to make money while you travel, then consider a career as a proofreader. It is one of the best jobs online that allows you to work remotely from anywhere. Here’s how you can become a proofreader and work from anywhere too.

As I mentioned, I have been proofreading a long time. During this time I have seen just how many opportunities there are out there to travel and work your way around the world as a proofreader. I’ve used it to make extra cash while living abroad in the UK, backpacking around Europe and while residing in Australia.

In this post to online proofreading jobs, I will explain what proofreading is and how it is different from copy editing and editing. Also what skills are required to proofread effectively. How to get jobs proofreading and how to get paid to proofread. Plus provide the best online proofreading websites to get jobs online.

I recommend proofreading if you are looking for a way to make money online as it is a very portable job that is particularly popular with travelling introverts. Proofreading allows you to earn extra cash if working remotely from home part-time, full-time, as a side hustle, or if you want to transition into the digital nomad lifestyle.

Proofreading has changed since I first started proofreading. Texts I would proofread were on printed paper and required me to mark up the errors with my red pen. And this type of proofreading still exists, however, most proofreading is now done online, where you proofread copy on a screen. If becoming an online proofreader sounds appealing, keep reading for everything you need to know about this work from home job or I should say, work from anywhere profession.

So let’s get into it and get your online job as a proofreader up and running, or is that up and travelling!

What is Proofreading? And What is a Proofreader?

Proofreading is the process of thoroughly and carefully checking a written text for any errors. These errors can be spelling, grammar, punctuation, consistency or formatting of the text. A proofreader is the person with an eagle eye and proofreading skills who is able to identify these errors and fix them or suggest to the person who wrote the text how to fix them.

Proofreading is the final stage of the writing process and is very important. So writers and printers like to ensure the written text is perfect before pressing the publish button or the print button. Mistakes in a text make the writer look unprofessional.

Difference between Proofreading and Editing

While the skills needed for proofreading and editing are similar and often thought to be interchangeable, there is a significant difference between these two. Proofreading, you could say is ‘finding and fixing the mistakes’ while editing is a process where the whole text is looked at to ensure it is clear to the reader what it is about. During editing text may be removed, re-organised or re-written for clarity.

And within editing you will discover there are different types of editing: copy editing and content editing for instance. Copy editing is about improving style, formatting and accuracy while content editing looks at the content and is where you may need to add things, leave things out or re-write sections of content. Plus you have more specific types of editing: line editing, structure editing, fact checking and developmental editing to name a few.

But it is proofreaders who are the ‘final defenders’ of the text who do the final review before the publish button or the print button is pushed. And it is online proofreading as a profession that you can do remotely from home or anywhere what this post is about.

TIP: Understand the differences between proofreading and editing and ensure your client understands the differences so when providing a service, there isn’t any confusion.

Can You Make Money Proofreading?

Of course you can, I’m living proof of this as I get paid to proofread. Most freelance proofreaders set their own prices or rates and work their own hours. The more you proofread, the more you can make. Some online proofreaders charge by the hour while others charge by the word. I charge a bit of both. I know it takes me about 30-60 minutes to proofread 1,000 words so if a client asked me to proofread a 2,000 word article I would give them a 2 hour price. But you will work it out, and don’t be afraid to negotiate.

proofreading can be done from anywhere – while having a coffee in your garden

Pros & Cons of the Job as a Proofreader online

There are both advantages and disadvantages to being a freelance proofreader working from home or anywhere.

Pros of Being a Freelance Proofreader

As a freelancer you can set your own prices.

You can work your own hours and work these hours from anywhere – making this a great flexible profession to work from home or while travelling and around any commitments you may have.

You won’t have a supervisor breathing down your neck – you only need to meet the needs of your client.

There is a huge demand for proofreaders so it shouldn’t be too difficult to find work.

Proofreading is suited to introverts, on saying that, anyone can proofread.

Cons of Being a Freelance Proofreader

With anything, there are disadvantages to being a freelance proofreader.

Some clients require a proofreader to have a professional qualification.

There can be tight deadlines that you need to meet.

Clients may confuse a proofreading service with an editing service.

Lack of confidence in your skills could see you take a lower rate than you actually should.

Overall, I think the pros of being a freelance proofreading win over the disadvantages.

What Qualifications and Skills do You Need to be a Proofreader?

Some proofreading jobs require you to have a degree while others don’t. To be a proofreader what you need is to have excellent spelling and grammar skills. And time management skills also helps, particularly when you have your own proofreading business.

Now, if you have just become a little worried about whether you have the knowledge of these, I would suggest you do a proofreading course. This is what I did initially, and now I have a Diploma in Editing and Proofreading. But if you have good skills already, there are still jobs out there that don’t require a professional qualification plus, there are now on the market online tools to help.

Tools of the Proofreader Trade

When I first started proofreading I learnt how to proofread text on printed paper. I was taught how to ‘mark up’ a text using red pen. There were little symbols we would use to show where something needed to be done such as inserting a word or deleting a space. Things are much easier now, there are online tools available that help you to complete proofreading jobs from home. These tools include:

Spellchecker: This is a must-have tool as one of the things you check as a proofreader is spelling. As you need to know and understand whether to use their or there! And most software, such as Microsoft Word has a built in spellchecker – so use it!

Grammarly: Also while proofreading a document, you will be checking grammar. Grammarly is great in that it finds grammatical errors and provides explanations and suggestions for each grammatical mistake it picks up. This is so helpful.

Google Docs: Another tool for online proofreading is Google Docs. Google Docs allows you to receive, send and share files with clients for free. It has a number of editing tools helping you to show and suggest what needs fixing on the text. Though many use and like Google Docs, I do prefer to work in a Word document – but that’s just me! If it is you too you will need Microsoft Word.

Laptop or Computer with email software to communicate with clients. Read my posts Essential Equipment for online workers or essential equipment for digital nomads plus a printer to print the text to proofread.

Red Pen: Last, but not least, if you prefer to proofread from a printed copy of the text you will need a red pen (or any colour of your choice) to mark up the copy.

How to Find Online Proofreading Jobs

There are two main ways to find online proofreading jobs. You either start up your own business and advertise yourself via your own website or have a profile on an online platform, or answer proofreading job postings on an online platform. You can even contact online publishers, but I have had much luck using this avenue. I’ve had more luck with Facebook Groups such as Find a VA (Virtual Assistant).

How to Start a Freelance Proofreading Business

Many proofreaders work for themselves and so start their own freelance proofreading business. As with any business, you will need to work out your business structure and procedures. You may want to write yourself a business plan that will include:

Get the appropriate skills.

Business structure. Will you need to register a business name or a company.

Define your service or services. What is your proofreading niche (travel blogs, legal documents, academic documents, business documents, print media and books). As I am a travel blogger/travel writer I decided to proofread for other travel bloggers so I specialise in proofreading travel blogs.

What equipment is required? Computer and software.

How will you get clients? See following.

Marketing yourself – your own website.

Set up your communication channels of how you correspond with clients.

Most importantly, how will you get paid?

Keep track of your income and expenses.

Best Online Platforms to find a proofreading online Job

Get paid to proofread through these legitimate proofreading jobs online.

Fiverr

My first online proofreading gig came through Fiverr. I uploaded my profile and services on this platform and it didn’t take long before requests came in. With Fiverr, you create a profile that includes information about you, your skills and what services you are offering. There are 3 levels of services and you may have to start with a lower rate at first to attract clients. What I love about Fiverr is that it takes care of the money side of things. But to do so, they take a cut of your final money being paid for the gig.

SEE ALSO: How to Make Money on Fiverr

Upwork

Upwork is very similar to Fiverr and is one of the best websites to find entry-level proofreading jobs. There is an abundance of freelance proofreading job listings so is a great way to find work from home. It is an easy platform to navigate and use and like Fiverr charges a service charge to introduce and handle the money on your behalf. Nevertheless, it is a great beginner platform for proofreaders looking to gain experience and build their portfolio for better paying jobs in the future.

FlexJobs

Next on the list of best online platforms to find a proofreading jobs is FlexJobs. Similar to Upwork, this huge online platform lists job opportunities for entry-level and experienced proofreaders. But unlike Fiverr and Upwork, it charges a monthly fee – but this means the cheap freelancers who want everything for free don’t make FlexJobs their number one place to find jobs.

Scribendi

Unlike the previous three websites mentioned in this list of places to find freelance proofreading jobs, Scribendi is specifically for proofreaders and editors to find online work. They also require their proofreaders and editors to have certain qualifications before being allowed to sign up. So if just starting out and you don’t have a qualification, then consider Fiverr, Upwork and FlexJobs first to find a proofreading gig.

Other Online Proofreading Job Platforms

There are other online proofreading platforms, but I have not used them, so cannot give you first-hand information about them. But you might want to check them out: Scribbr, Proofreading Services, Proofreading Pal, Gramlee, Polished Paper and Edit Fast.

Are You Ready to Become a Proofreader and work from anywhere?

I hope this post has proved helpful to you in your journey to getting a job as a proofreader. Even without a degree you can find online jobs proofreading that will allow you to work from home remotely or anywhere in the world you choose to call home. I’d love to hear about your proofreading journey.

I identify as an introvert and have all my life. Call me what you will – nerd, geek or dork. I think I like the word bookworm as growing up, and even now, I still enjoy reading a good book and this has led to me loving books so much I wrote a few, travel guides actually. And now I also am a travel writer, travel blogger, proofreader, editor and content creator. All great remote jobs for introverts. So if you identify as being an introvert, read on because you may find the perfect remote job – just like I have.

In this post I will answer what I think are the best remote jobs for introverts. There are lots of opportunities to make money from home without a degree or experience that suit introverts.

What Is an Introvert?

An introvert is a person that feels more comfortable focusing on their inner thoughts and ideas. They prefer to be with one or two other people rather than large crowds and they work best in smaller groups or in solo roles. This is why remote jobs done online suit introverts.

Why do many Introverts prefer Remote Jos?

Introverts can be social people around family and close friends, but put them in a room with a lot of loud people and they can feel stressed. This is why introverts prefer jobs where they can concentrate on their work in quiet and remote jobs are a fantastic solution for shy introverts. By working remotely they can create their own working environment which helps them to be productive and to make an income.

Do Introverts make great Digital Nomads?

Definitely. Introverts love to travel just like everyone else making them great digital nomads as they can work online remotely from anywhere. Check out all the digital nomad visas here.

Best Workplace Types for Introverts

In one way, I am pleased the world-wide Covid-19 pandemic happened because it brought to the forefront the opportunity for many people to work remotely from home. Many introverts who might have been working in jobs that made them feel like they were ‘out of their comfort zone’, rejoiced at being able to limit social interactions. So if you want to reduce your social interactions, having one of the fully remote jobs for introverts might suit your introverted personality.

Workplace Options

So what are the best workplace options for introverts if you want to limit your social interactions.

Fully remote. These jobs are precisely that, jobs where you work 100% fully remote. This can be from your home or wherever you live (in a van, on a boat, remotely somewhere while traveling). You are usually working for a company that allows this.

Hybrid. This is where you may spend a couple of days working from your office and the rest of your days at home. This can be a really good mix.

Freelance. As a freelancer you can work from home or wherever you are. Very similar to working fully remote, but you will be freelancing your services.

Flexi Jobs. Very similar to working hybrid but you may be job-sharing and allowed to work from home.

Entrepreneur. Very much like being a freelancer, being your own boss gives many introverts total control over their own schedule and whether or not they want social interactions.

When you know what workplace options you prefer, then you can decide on the best remote job for introverts you would like to do.

Can Introverts make Good Money Working Remotely from Anywhere?

Working from home doesn’t mean that you have to do jobs at a minimum wage. In fact, as a freelance remote worker you can set your own rates. And there are manyhigh-paying jobs for introverts, like all jobs, you need to put the work in to reap the rewards.

Best Remote Jobs for Introverts

At a glance, some of the best remote jobs for introverts include:

Blogging
Freelance Writing/Content Creating
Proofreading and Editing
Virtual Assistant
Graphic Designer/Web Designer
Online Data Entry
Bookkeeper
Social Media Manager
Drop shipper
Technical Support

1. Blogger

Being a blogger and blogging about your passion is one of the best remote worker jobs around – well, that’s my opinion. As an introverted traveler this is one of the remote jobs I do. I blog about travel and the lifestyle travel affords me. Do you have a passion? Then why not start a blog and get blogging.

Bloggers can make a full-time income from their blog through ads on their site, affiliate marketing of products and selling digital products and courses they create. And what is a full-time income? Well this will vary per blogger, but in my case I make a few thousand per month and this affords me the remote work lifestyle I like.

2. Freelance Writer

Being a freelance writer is one of the ultimate introvert careers. If you love writing, then as a freelance writer you can be writing for other people. Freelancing offers a lot of flexibility and allows introverts to work from anywhere – from home, from a van or while travelling and living abroad on a digital nomad visa.

Some freelance writing jobs you could get as a freelancer include:

Blog writer

Content writer

Technical writer

Ghostwriter

Resume writer

To get started as a freelance writer I suggest putting your profile up on Fiverr. This is how I got started writing freelance travel articles. Then I joined a few writing Facebook Groups and have clients through them.

3. Proofreading and Editing

Many introverts I have met love to read. So why not put your reading skills to good use. If you aren’t aware of the difference of proofreading and editing I will quickly give you the definition of both. Proofreading involves looking at text closely, line by line, word by word to spot any spelling and grammatical mistakes. While Editing refers to making more local changes to things like sentence structure and phrasing to make sure your meaning is conveyed clearly and concisely. Proofreading involves looking at the text closely, line by line, to spot any typos and issues with consistency and correct them. While editing involves making changes to sentence structure and phrasing to ensure the meaning is clear and concise.

So you could decide to be a proofreader or an editor, or both. To do this sort of work I suggest you have some sort of qualification in the field. I actually have a Diploma of Proofreading and Editing from the Australian College of Journalism. I did it to help improve my writing. So as well as being a freelance traveler writer / blogger, I also do proofreading. I got my first client through a Facebook Group and she recommended me to other travel bloggers who needed proofreading help. This goes to show, if you do a good job, people often recommend you.

To start as a proofreader and editor when you are an introvert I suggest you do a course first, then offer your services in Facebook Groups and upload a profile onto sites such as Fiverr.

4. Virtual Assistant (VA)

Being a virtual assistant is such a great online job for introverts. It allows you to use your skills to work from anywhere and be paid for it. Virtual assistants help other people and businesses with their overflow of work. Many VAs specialise in a number of areas and offer services in one or more fields. Many VAs specialise so they are great in one or two fields rather than mediocre in a lot of fields. Services virtual assistant’s offer are right up any introverts alley as these jobs require minimal contact with people and can be done from home – wherever home is! Services include:

Administration support

Freelance Writing/Content Creation

Payroll

Bookkeeping services

Affiliate marketing manager

Social media manager

Email support

E-commerce support

Graphic Design and Website creation

Technical Support

To be a virtual assistant being able to work from anywhere, set up a profile on Fiverr, join Facebook groups and maybe have your own website advertising your services.

5. Graphic Designer / Website Designer

Graphic design careers are great jobs for introverts as they allow for creativity in the solitude of your own home workplace. No doubt, you will have done a course in graphic design providing you with the fundamentals of great design. With this knowledge, you could be:

Working in web design

Illustrating

Creating logos

In print design creating book covers and internal pages

Many graphic designers work in-house or freelance from home which suits introverts down to a tea! As with other jobs able to be done online, find clients by setting up a profile on Fiverr and join Facebook groups.

6. Data Entry

Data entry is an ideal remote job for introverts as it allows them to work with data and spreadsheets. Even if this is done in an office, you will be working independently and concentrating on what you are doing. But this type of work can easily be done remotely from home or anywhere. I have done this type of work and what often counts the most is your typing speed. The faster the better, as long as you are accurate. Plus having knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word and Google Sheets will come in handy. Many data entry introverts find jobs via Fiverr, Upwork and FlexJobs. Linkedin also may be useful.

7. Bookkeeper

Behind every good accountant is usually a great bookkeeper! To be a bookkeeper you will have done a course to learn the fundamentals of accounting plus have knowledge of the latest accounting software packages such as MYOB. You will be responsible for reconciling bank accounts, recording financial transactions, tracking expenses and handling accounts payable and receivable. And all the information you input will then be organised and calculated to produce reports. If you have this knowledge, then being a remote online bookkeeper may be the job for your introverted soul. Many bookkeepers find work through LinkedIn, Fiverr, Upwork and large recruitment sites such as Indeed and Seek.

8. Social Media Manager

You might think a social media manager needs to be an extrovert but really, the social media manager is the person behind the extrovert! As a social media expert you will be responsible for creating content for your client’s social media platforms. And there are a lot of social media platforms out there including YouTube, Pinterest, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, Facebook to name a few. Most social media managers choose one or two platforms to specialise in rather than being mediocre in many. And being a social media manager is a great job for introverts as it can be done from home or anywhere you have access to the internet. You can find work through Fiverr, Upwork and many Facebook groups.

9. Drop shipper

What’s a drop shipper I hear you ask? Well it is someone who has an ecommerce store that sells goods from a third party. Meaning, you don’t keep stock on hand. So for instance, you are selling bags on your website, someone buys the bag and an order is placed with you, you then order the bag from your supplier and then the supplier fulfils the order. Read my post on Being a Drop shipper. It is a great sort of job for introverts as there is no face-to-face selling as all correspondence is done online. To start drop shipping you will need to have a platform to sell your products – this could be on Facebook or your own website.

10. Technical Support

A remote IT support job is well-suited for introverts who enjoy solving technical problems without in-person interactions. Programming typically involves working independently, focusing on complex problem-solving tasks, and spending long periods of time in front of a computer. When not so technical people have issues with their tech, they turn to a technical support person. When I have technical issues with my website I turn to a specialist website tech person who resolves my issues.

11. Bonus Jobs for Introverts

There are many more jobs for introverts that I could add to my top 10 jobs for introverts list but I didn’t want to make my list too long. But other jobs introverts can do remotely from home or anywhere or while travelling the world, can be:

photographer

UX Designer

Data Analyst

Transcriptionist

travel agent

day trader

someone selling things on Etsy

SEO specialist

online tutor!

Physical Travel Jobs for Introverts

Extraverts can do any of the above mentioned jobs for introverts, but may be better suited to jobs where there is regular interaction with other people. These include, but are not limited to:

Bartender

Reception in a hostel/hotel

In this post, I provide you with the steps and plenty of tips how to become a content creator.

Content creation is not knew as it has been the cornerstone of marketing for a very long time. Marketing is one of the best ways to get your message out to the world to create a buzz about your services, products or brand. With the advent of the online world, particularly as the internet becomes more prevalent in our everyday lives, content creation has become a major part of this online world.

So what exactly is content creation and who creates this content that we are seeing every day and why is it now so important in this digital world we live in? In this post I will explain just that, provide the ins and outs of content creation, who creates it and how you can become a content creator who works from home or abroad.

As a content creator myself, I’ve been able to travel the world while running my online business. In fact, my online content creation business nowadays funds all my travels. If it is your goal to become a digital nomad, content creation is one of the best digital nomad jobs. Or if you want to work from home making an income online, becoming a content creator may be the best job for you. I know it is for me!

What is Content Creation?

Simply put, content creation is the process of creating various forms of content or media that appeals to a target audience. Content creation is often done for entertainment, information and educational purposes.

What is a Content Creator?

A content creator is someone who creates content, either written words or visual videos and photographs. This content is usually shared online via websites or social media channels. Content creators often work for themselves creating content about themselves or their services or on a freelance basis creating content for others.

Do You Need a Qualification to be a Content Creator?

The good news is that NO, you don’t necessarily need a degree or qualification to be a content creator. But what you do need are skills.

What skills do you need to become a content creator?

Firstly and fore mostly, you need a passion for creating engaging and fun content. Content creators need to be creative as they need to be able to think up new ways of creating and sharing content. They need social media skills and an understanding of platforms to be able to share content. Then they need the technical skills to produce it and successfully share it on a platform. And where do you get these skills from? You have probably developed them by using platforms yourself. To become really proficient in them, you may want to do an online course to gain greater skills.

Types of Content Creation

Some of the most common types of content creators include bloggers, freelance writers, streamers, podcasters, vloggers (video bloggers) and social media influencers such as YouTubers, Instagrammers and Tiktokers. The prominent types of content creation come in the forms of written words and visual presentations like videos and photography. So what type of content creation are you good at? Knowing what you are good at will help you to create content and enjoy it. So let’s look at the different type of content creation in a little more detail.

Content Writer

A content writer creates original and engaging written content for various marketing channels and platforms. These channels and platforms include, but are not limited to, websites, email and social media channels. Blogging is probably the most common content writer job at this time.

Photographer

A photographer loves taking photos and their photographs appear on websites and social media. Photographers often specialise in taking compelling photos in different fields such as fashion, beauty and travel. Photographers shoot photos for themselves which they might sell or publish on their own websites or social media or they will shoot photographs for clients who want specific photos, and this may be less interesting than what they love to shoot.

Videographer

Videographers film and edit video content. YouTube is the current preferred platform for video content creators, but many are also sharing video on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. And if people cannot do this themselves they outsource to a videographer or specialist YouTube content creator who can help them to provide video content for this popular social media outlets or blogs.

Podcast host

Podcasts are a great way to share messages and information. The host of the podcast may need help with creating content for their listeners. They may require people for researching ideas, putting the idea into a written form so the podcaster can then use the scripted content in their podcast.

Social media influencer

Though it may look like social media influencers are doing everything themselves, often they are not. They often need help from writers to write content, photographers to provide photos and video and social media managers to help get their content out there. But when you first start out, you probably are. Most social media influencers choose one platform to share their content at first. It is better to be proficient in one than mediocre in many.

Social media manager

Social media managers are often the content creator behind the content creator! They work in conjunction with a content creator. Social media managers come in different forms. They can specialise in designing pins, they can write Facebook posts and they can write and send out emails. This is what a social media content creator does.

Why Become a Content Creator?

Like all work done in person and online, there are pros and cons. There are many pros to becoming a content creator.

Pros of being a Content Creator

Get to do what you are good at doing and probably love doing.

Make money doing what you love doing.

Creating content can be done from anywhere. You can work from home or abroad. You can stay put in one country or longer on a digital nomad visa, work from a van, or work remotely from the comfort of your home.

You have the flexibility to work your own hours, particularly if you are a freelance content creator or creating content for yourself.

Cons of being a Content Creator

Being a content creator can be hard work.

You are always thinking about what content to create next.

It may take a while to build up a strong online presence and to find client.

You may feel like giving up at times.

TIP: You will spend a lot of time online so ensure you have the right equipment.

How to become a Content Creator?

Lucky for you, anyone can become a content creator. In this age of digital information, content creators are an essential part of the online landscape. And many of us spend hours (sometimes) scrolling through the different social media outlets and unbeknown to us, we are getting skills. We have learnt how to post not only photos but reels and video. We are learning how to monetise our social media channels. Right! This is great news so if you are serious about becoming a content creator, there are a number of steps you need to follow to turn this interest into a money making career.

Steps for how to be a Content Creator

Requirements to Become a Content Creator

‍

Decide on what type of content creator you want to be. What are you good at. Most content creators will specialise in one, maybe two areas. Take me for instance, I have been a travel writer for some 30 years, so I specialise in content creation of the written word. I write blog posts and I also proofread and edit them. What are you good at or enjoy?

Understand your why and your audience. People are attracted to certain things because it answers a question they have. So understand what answers to questions you will be providing and who is the audience? Research your market. You need to understand your chosen market so you can provide the appropriate content. Follow those who may be already doing what you want to do and do similar but different so you stand out!

Choose a platform. There are a few social media channels – Facebook (with over 2 billion active users) is great for businesses to promote themselves with written posts, ads and short videos. YouTube (with some 2.6 billion users) is perfect for vlogging (video blogging). – Instagram (with an estimated 2 billion users) is great for images and short video. Other platforms include TikTok,Twitter and Pinterest to name a few. For me, my chosen platform is this website. I provide written content that provides ‘how to’ information, like how to become a content creator. And I promote my website on Facebook and Pinterest – these are the two markets that currently work for me to get my words out there. What is your chosen platform? Also, not all social platforms are created equally. Not only do they attract different audiences, but some platforms have been created for a specific type of content. WordPress is synonymous with blogs. YouTube is the home of video. You get the idea.

Decide on your business structure? I suggest you think about this here because you need to decide if you will be the content creator for yourself creating things like a blog or are you going to offer freelance services where you will be providing creative content for other people as a virtual assistant (VA). There is no harm in doing both. I have my own blogs and websites but I also write and proofread articles for other bloggers.

Create your personal brand. Your brand is usually your name, your own name or a business name. My brand name is Live Work Play Travel and my target audience is people who want to travel, live and work abroad either at home working remotely or on the road as a digital nomad.

Start creating regular content. People crave new content and it is up to you to provide it. Posting new content regularly, which could be daily, is a must. So as not to be posting blindly, many people write themselves a social media strategy which includes ideas of what they will post for the next week, month, or even year. Once you start creating regular content you could consider monetising your content. Monetising your content basically means, making money from your content.

Monetise your content. There are different ways to monetise your content. You may want to work with brands where you promote products such as hotels or clothes. You will need to put together a media kit or UGC (User-Generated Content) portfolio, so you can secure partnerships and collaborations. Some influencer platforms like Social Native, is a great place to find brands looking for influencers or to connect with content creators. Or you could join affiliate programs which is what I have done with my website. For promoting organisations, known as affiliate marketing, such as Booking.com (for accommodation) or GetYourGuide (for tours) I receive a commission for every sale made via my website. A good thing about affiliate marketing is you don’t need to have a huge audience to get started with this. Consulting is another option to make money from your passion. If you are proficient in your field people may want to learn from you. This can be anything from teaching classes on certain software programs, social media outlets or freelance writing.

Focus on quality over quantity. In the meantime, keep posting quality content or help someone to post quality content to build up followers so you can start making an online income. Even if you aren’t making any, or much money at first keep practising as practice makes you better.

Market Yourself. If you create content you need to let people know you are creating content. So set up those social media accounts and start spreading the word. Even have your own website to advertise yourself and your services. Join Facebook groups or advertise your services on such sites as Fiverr.

Measure success through KPI tracking Keeping track of your key performance indicators (KPIs) is important as these will tell you what is and isn’t working. I use Google Analytics to help me know which of my posts are popular.

TIP: Invest in tools to help you succeed. Tools such as Canva to create many visual. Grammarly to ensure your writing makes sense. Physical camera and video equipment to capture photos and video with clarity. And don’t forget your office set up.

Can you make a living from creating content?

Sure can! Follow the above steps, provide quality content and you should be able to make a living from creating content either for yourself or other people or organisations. But how much do content creators make I hear you ask? Well how long is a piece of string. It is too hard to give a specific figure as I am not privy to content creators income. But many content creators are making very decent incomes from providing content. Enough to live on and enough to fund their travels as they live and work abroad as digital nomads.

‍Are You Ready to Become a Content Creator?

When you have decided what your focus will be – writing, video, blog posts, podcasts, etc. and follow the above steps, you can increase your chances of becoming a successful content creator. Being a digital content creator creating content is a great way to turn a passion or hobby into a full-time career allowing you to work remotely from home or anywhere. So if you are wanting to live a remote or digital nomad lifestyle, consider becoming a content creator. Are you ready to get started?

You want to live and work abroad, but don’t know if you can afford to leave on this great adventure yet because you are saving up to travel! Well many travellers leave home without big budgets because they will look for jobs abroad with accommodation provided and preferably with no experience needed. Think that’s impossible? Well, it isn’t.

There are some great opportunities out there that not only provide employment but also include the added perk of accommodation. And when you get a job with accommodation included, you kill two birds with one stone. Here are some of the best 10 jobs abroad with accommodation included that don’t need experience or lots of qualifications.

Jobs Abroad With Accommodation (and most without experience needed)

1. Live-in Au Pair, Mother’s Help and Nanny Jobs

When I first moved to London on a UK working holiday visa, I got a job as a live-in Mother’s Help. If you are wondering what a mother’s help is well, it is someone who is there to help the mum. You are somewhere in between an Au Pair and a qualified nanny. You help the mother with jobs such as looking after any children, doing light housework and maybe cooking some meals.

The best things about this type of work was I didn’t need any experience and the job was live-in. So because the job was live-in, this took care of finding a job and somewhere to live in the one hit. As well as the UK, living and working in Europe as an Au Pair or Nanny is very popular.

If you don’t mind looking after children and have no or some experience, you could get one of these child care jobs abroad with accommodation. Many families, in many countries seek a live-in Au Pair, Mother’s Help or Nanny to help in their family. And yes, I was paid a salary and had my own room in the house near the kids. Win, win, don’t you think?

Being a live-in child carer was one of the best jobs abroad I had.

READ MORE: How to Travel and Work Abroad as an Au Pair or Nanny

2. Hostel & Hotel with accommodation

As you travel and work abroad you will need somewhere to sleep every night. And accommodation costs are one of the biggest costs as you live work and play around the world.

Your choice of accommodation available can include a bed in a hostel or hotel or a cabin in a caravan park or you could be getting into van life. Now this accommodation will have someone checking you in, cleaning your room and other areas and maybe serving you breakfast. Many of these people are actually travellers themselves. They are either working in the accommodation for a wage or have agreed to exchange work for accommodation because they might not have a visa allowing them to work. And many of these jobs in hostels and hotels often don’t need any qualifications or prior experience.

So if you are looking for a job abroad with accommodation, even jobs for couples abroad with accommodation, consider asking where you are staying for the night if any jobs are going. You could also use the large accommodation booking sites such as HostelWorld and Booking.com. They cannot actually get you a job with accommodation but you can check out the accommodation options available. And if you see one you’d like to live and work in, you could contact them directly to see if there was a position with accommodation available.

3. TrustedHousesitters – House and Pet Sitting with Accommodation

One of the biggest expenses while traveling is the cost of accommodation. What would you say if I said you can travel the world for free by simply house and pet sitting. Well, accommodation will be free!

Some people treat house and pet sitting as jobs abroad with accommodation but in most cases, you don’t get paid. Though, I have heard of some people who do receive a small stipend as well as the accommodation.

I guess you are wondering what a house and pet sitter has to do, right? A house sitter basically looks after a house while the resident is away. They may need to look after a pet, water the plants and put the rubbish bins out. Many countries are embracing housesitting including the USA, UK, Australia and many in Europe which is great news for house sitters.

One of the best ways to find a housesitting job is through an agency such as TrustedHousesitters. I’m a member of TrustedHousesitters. I have a profile that allows me to connect with people looking for a house sitter. I have done a number of housesitting gigs and you could too. I think it a great way to get free accommodation that allows me to work abroad without experience.

4. Teaching English Abroad with Accommodation

Teaching English abroad has long been a way for travellers to legally work in another country. This is because many English language schools will sponsor you to teach English in their schools with or without experience. Of course it helps having a TEFL certificate to get the best paid English speaking jobs work abroad with accommodation. Often included in your contract to teach is free accommodation – not always the best on the block, but accommodation all the same. What an exciting way to immerse yourself in a new culture. It’s one of the popular jobs abroad with accommodation and could see you live and work in many countries around the world.

Popular countries to teach English abroad are in Asia, particularly teaching English in Japan, South America and some European countries. One of the best places to find teaching English job vacancies abroad with accommodation is on online platforms such as Dave’s ESL Cafe.

5. Cruise Ship Jobs

If you love the idea of being paid to travel the world, then consider a job on a cruise ship. Working on a cruise ship is a great job abroad with accommodation.

Work opportunities onboard a cruise ship are wide and varied. They are in hospitality, entertainment, and housekeeping to name a few. Because you will be living aboard the cruise ship, you will be receive a wage and accommodation (usually in a small cabin shared with other cruise ship workers). Meals and being allowed to get off the ship while in port are also perks for working for a cruise line. Some even allow you to mingle with the passengers like I discovered when I sailed from Southampton to Sydney via the Panama Canal. Though most cruise ships have an area and services for cruise ship staff. No wonder people live and work on cruise ships for many seasons.

There are many cruise ships sailing the waters of the world with popular areas cruising the Caribbean, the Pacific and the Mediterranean. Visit cruise line websites which usually have a careers section advising where you can apply for jobs abroad online for cruise ships.

6. Work on a Yacht

Do you love being on the water? Well if you do, consider getting a job on a yacht. Working on a yacht as a first mate, chef, stewardess, yoga instructor or even a scuba diving instructor is a very cool experience for working abroad with accommodation provided. After all, just like working on a cruise ship, you will be living and working on the yacht. Your quarters where you live won’t be as luxurious as those upstairs of the paying guests. Working on a yacht is a great way to save money, as you don’t have anywhere to spend it while at sea!

7. Seasonal Summer Jobs Abroad with Accommodation

With the different seasons comes different work opportunities.

There are many summer seasonal jobs the working traveller can get. If you enjoy working with kids you could get a job in a USA summer camp for the season. How cool would that be? Or perhaps a job picking fruit and vegetables in Australia where fruit picking jobs with accommodation can be found. Maybe working in a bar or a cafe by the beach or other hospitality jobs which increase during the summer months. Many Aussies on working holidays in the UK will often get a live-in bar job as this takes care of getting a job and accommodation in the one hit. I cannot guarantee that all these seasonal summer jobs will have accommodation provided, but many do.

8. Seasonal Winter Jobs Abroad with Accommodation

If you love the cold weather and particularly the snow, you might consider working a season in a ski resort. Jobs abound in ski resorts as large numbers of staff are required to ensure all the services of the resort are met. From hospitality jobs to ski instructor jobs, all these jobs must be filled. As well as a wage many of these jobs come with accommodation included. Great news!

9. WWOOF

WWOOF stands for Willing Workers on Organic Farms and is a world-wide organisation. You don’t necessarily get paid for WWOOFing as it is basically an exchange program where in exchange for your work you receive accommodation and food. Plus learn different ways of farming in different countries. And you don’t need experience to WWOOF, you only need a willingness to work and learn.

WWOOF is a world wide organisation. You will need to join the organisation in the country you wish to WWOOF in. So if you don’t qualify for a working holiday visa, work permit or digital nomad visa you could WWOOF as you aren’t breaking any laws because you aren’t receiving any money. You are exchanging work for accommodation and food.

10. Volunteering Jobs with Accommodation

Volunteering can range from working a food line at a local charity, counting turtles, teaching kids in disadvantaged areas, helping on archaeological digs to moving abroad to help a community achieve something. And you don’t need experience to volunteer. Depending on the volunteering you do, will depend on what perks it comes with. If working in the food line you may receive a free meal at the end of your shift – wonderful. If going on a volunteer program, more than likely, you have paid to go on this to cover your food and accommodation and your placement. Your accommodation may be with other participants or with a local family, but hey, what a wonderful experience abroad.

Where to Find Jobs Overseas with Accommodation

If you want to move abroad, finding an overseas job that has accommodation included is a real bonus. So where are these jobs? Well, these jobs can be found in a lot of countries. To find a live in job abroad I suggest:

hone in on a country or region that is of interest to you first, then,

look for the types of jobs that have the added bonus of accommodation included. This could be in Australia, South America, United Kingdom or Europe. The world is your oyster – just read some of these traveller tales for inspiration.

How to Find Jobs Overseas with Accommodation

Research, research, research is the best way to find a job abroad that includes accommodation. You can do it before you start your travels or while on the road looking for your next destination. Once you have decided where to live and work, you can begin the how to live and work abroad.

Using the internet with the search words ‘jobs with accommodation’ would be a start. I’d probably put the country or region with those words. So, ‘jobs with accommodation in X’. X could be jobs with accommodation in Australia or perhaps, jobs with accommodation in Europe. I think you get my drift!

If there is a specific type of job you would like to do, which are on this list in this post, contact specific agencies such as an Au Pair agency where you could apply for a job.

Check out job boards of specific countries with the words ‘jobs with accommodation’. Such as Seek in Australia, Jobsite in the UK or europa.jobs in Europe.

Visit social media sites such as Facebook and check out working abroad pages and groups and backpacker pages and groups. Groups like living and working in Bali.

Final Thoughts

As you have read, there are quite a number of ways to work abroad with free accommodation that require little or no experience. Working abroad with accommodation included can mean you can extend your time travelling the world. So what are you waiting for? Have you had jobs abroad with accommodation and no experience required? If you know of one that I can add to this list I’d love to hear.

The Covid-19 pandemic squashed many people’s plans of living and working abroad. Even though the pandemic has waned and this virus still impacts people on a day basis with its presence, the desire of people to live and work abroad is on the up once again. Now if you are one of these people who wants to live and work abroad, read on because in this post I will explain the 3 best options for living and working abroad.

Option 1: Follow the Digital Nomad Visa Boom

As you know, the Covid-19 pandemic saw many people working from home. And people enjoyed it so much, they want to stay working from home. So if you are an online remote worker or someone who has set up as a freelancer who can work from anywhere, then if you want to live and work abroad, you can follow the digital nomad visa boom.

Covid-19 lockdowns led to people losing their employment and having to leave a country before it went into lockdown to get home. This has led to populations reducing. So more and more country governments are offering digital nomad visas as a way to attract talent to live, work, play and spend money in their country to fill the voids. This is great news for those wanting to move abroad to experience another country’s culture and lifestyle.

Requirements to get a Digital Nomad Visa

Countries are introducing digital nomad visa programs to attract freelancers, location-independent workers and digital nomads. You can get a list of the countries offering digital nomad visas here.

Through a digital nomad visa program, you can live and work in a country from six months to two years. And in many instances, this time can be extended. Each digital nomad visa program is different and there are different guidelines and rules that come with them. In general to apply for a digital nomad visa requirements often include:

Proof of employment and income – this can be bank statements or recent invoices. This visa requires you to be earning enough to sustain your lifestyle while living and working abroad in their country.

Proof of health and travel insurance – this is where a good policy such as one through SafetyWing comes into play.

Proof of financial resources – bank statements can show your balance.

Paying visa fees and taxes – most digital nomad visas have a fee.

Passing a background check

What I love about the digital nomad visa is there is no age limit. Truly! No age limit, unlike with the working holiday visa which is for young people aged 18-30 years (sometimes 35 years). So it doesn’t matter how old you are to move abroad to live and work in another country that offers a digital nomad visa program. And some of the programs welcome digital nomad and remote workers’ families. Great news if you want to take your partner and your kids to live and work abroad.

Popular Countries to live and work on a Digital Nomad Visa

There are a number of popular countries remote workers and digital nomad visas are preferring to live and work in. This is because of the cheap cost of living, fast internet speeds and the great lifestyle. Popular digital nomad countries (in my opinion) that meet all the requirements include:

Spain
Bermuda
Croatia
Mexico
Bali
Thailand
Estonia

For a complete list, check out digital nomad visa guide here.

Option 2: Working Holiday Visa Schemes

Countries with a working holiday visa program allow those that qualify for the visa to come to their country for an extended time, usually 1-2 years, to combine work with a holiday. Depending on where you are from, a working holiday visa (WHV) may be your best option for working abroad.

Requirements for the Working Holiday Visa

There is an age limit. People aged 18-30 or sometimes 18-35 can apply as long as there is an agreement in place between your country and other countries. If you don’t qualify for a working holiday visa, don’t worry as there are work abroad opportunities for when you are over 30 years of age.

You will need to have a certain amount of money in your bank account to support yourself during your initial stay.

Paying visa fees and taxes – most working holiday visas have a fee.

Some countries may require you pass a medical before issuing the visa.

Each country has their own requirements you must meet to live and work in that country.

The stay in the country to live and work varies from 6 months to 2 years.

Work that can be undertaken may be limited to specific backpacker travel jobs. In some countries you cannot work certain industries. For example, the South Korea working holiday visa program restricts employment in a range of job categories, from dance and music to journalism and religion.

Popular Countries to live and work on a Working Holiday Visa

Some countries in particular have embraced the working holiday visa. Countries such as:

Australia
Canada
Japan
New Zealand
United Kingdom

See my full list of countries with a working holiday visa.

Option 3: Teaching English Abroad (with or without a qualification and experience)

Teaching English abroad has long been one of the most popular employment choices for travellers. It is so popular because you can arrive in a country on a tourist visa, apply to English Language Schools for a teaching job and if they accept you, they will sponsor a work permit for you. And face-to-face teaching is returning making teaching English abroad a great option to live and work abroad, particularly in Asia.

When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, face-to-face teaching was abandoned and the rise of online teaching happened. Teaching English online was embraced and now, teachers can teach from anywhere in the world. They can set up at home, in a van or in a coffee shop – as long as they have the right tech gear to connect to their students.

The Future of Working Abroad

Now the Covid-19 pandemic is behind us, people who want to work abroad are taking up the opportunities open to them. From living and working abroad on a digital nomad visa, working holiday visa or a sponsored visa, the future of living and working abroad looks bright. Have you worked abroad or are planning to, I’d love to hear in the comments.

Are you sick of the daily grind? Then have you considered taking some time off from work or school to explore a far-flung destination or destinations? Maybe it’s time you should! But how are you going to do it? Well, why not take a gap year or sabbatical and travel. Sound good? If this has sparked your interest, read on. This post explains what a gap year and a sabbatical are and provides reasons to take one. It will answer your questions, share the pros and cons of a gap year or sabbatical and help you to plan a successful gap year abroad for yourself. Here goes.

What is a Gap Year?

A gap year is usually a year long break taken by students either after graduating from high school and before they start college or after college and before starting their career.

What is a Sabbatical?

A sabbatical is an adult gap year or career break. It is someone who has a job and wants to take a break from it. The sabbatical requires the employee to return to their original employer after their leave period is finished. Most are over 30 years of age who don’t qualify for a working holiday but still want to travel abroad.

How Long is a Gap Year or Sabbatical?

A gap year or sabbatical is usually for a year, but it can be as long as you want it to be. There is no rule that is has to be a year. A gap year or sabbatical is more about what you do with your time and not about how long you do it for. A 2 month sabbatical or gap year can be just as rewarding as a 12 month gap year or sabbatical.

What Do You Do on a Gap Year or Sabbatical?

This isn’t just a break from studies or career – it’s an opportunity for personal, professional and academic growth. It’s a time when you explore your interests and gain real-world experiences. There are so many things you can do during this break. You can learn a new language in another country, just travel, maybe volunteer abroad or go on a working holiday visa. The world is your oyster and it is a time for self-discovery.

Who Usually Takes a Gap Year?

While gap years or sabbaticals are usually associated with school leavers, undergraduates and postgraduates, a break is a great option for people of all ages and professions. Having a mid-life crisis? Why not take a ‘grown up gap year’. You’re never too old to take a break and invest in yourself on a gap year or sabbatical!

Reasons to Take a Gap Year or Sabbatical

You want to:

travel the world before settling into your chosen profession or college / university course.

Need a break from the 9-5 life or academic monotonous routine.

Get out of your comfort zone and develop new skills and independence.

Discover different cultures and just generally travel and see and do new things.

Pros and Cons of taking a Gap Year or Sabbatical

There are many reasons to take a gap year or sabbatical. Here are 10 reasons why you should.

1. Self-Discovery and Personal Growth

One of the most valuable aspects of a gap year is the opportunity for self-discovery. The time you take helps you focus on your passions and interests and allows you time to develop and grow them. What you discover about yourself during this time is often invaluable to future endeavours including further education and career pursuits.

2. Real World Experience

During your gap year or sabbatical you can pursue your interests out in the real world. This gives you real world experience which can help build your resilience.

3. Cultural Exposure and Immersion

If you decide to move abroad to live and work in another country during your year off you will have cultural exposure and immersion. Learning about other ways of life opens up your mind which is invaluable in this globalised world we live in.

4. Career Exploration

A sabbatical or gap year provides a fantastic opportunity for career exploration. You could find a job in your chosen career or a career you are interested in to gain first hand experience. The things you learn could influence your chosen career path to change, or confirm the one you have chosen, is the one for you.

5. Academic Break

After many years of structured schooling, time off on a sabbatical or gap year can mitigate academic burnout and fatigue. Having time away from your studies or career can recharge your mental batteries. Then you can return refreshed, and with fresh perspective and ready to carry on where you left off.

6. Skills Development

A gap year or sabbatical can provide the opportunity for you to learn new skills. The skills can be from an interest or a different type of work. The more skills you develop can help to make your more employable in the future.

7. Networking

When you take time off on a gap year or sabbatical, and depending what you do during this time, you have the opportunity to meet new people. These new people may become life-long friends.

8. Develop Independence

Depending on your age and whether you are a solo traveler, even if you are traveling with your partner or with kids, you will develop independence and self-reliance. If you are traveling in a foreign country you will develop practical skills to survive – it is sometimes sink or swim! Which is why, going on a gap year or sabbatical can boost your confidence and develop your independence.

9. Resume Building

Without knowing it, the time you are away and developing new skills and interests, you are building your resume up. Employers often look favourably on people who have taken a sabbatical or gap year because of the new skills they have learnt and can bring to a job. Maybe you learnt a new language and you need to use this language to speak with clients or you learnt how to do something and so you can adapt these new skills to a new career.

Cons of Taking a Gap Year or Sabbatical

As with everything there are negatives. Here are some negatives to taking a gap year or sabbatical.

1. The Cost

How will you cover your living costs during your gap year or sabbatical? Possibly savings or perhaps from the work you will pick up while on your year off. The cost of going on a gap year or sabbatical can often stop you from living your dream.

2. Interfere with Career Progression

Depending on where you are working, your decision to take time off may put you ‘behind’ in your professional career or classmates in school. It could mean your income is not the same as your peers or it can take longer to graduate.

3. Mental Challenges

Though traveling the world sounds romantic, it can be stressful and have its mental challengers that can affect your health. Yes, it is great to see and do new things, but the decisions of what to see and do and where to stay can sometimes prove too much for some.

How to Plan a Gap Year or Sabbatical?

Now you have decided to take a sabbatical or gap year, it’s time to start planning it. Ask yourself:

Where do you want to go while on your gap year or sabbatical?

What do you want to do?

How long will your sabbatical or gap year be? If you are employed, how long will your employer let you have off or do you need to quit your job?

Are there skills you want to improve? A language to learn!

How are you going to pay for your gap year or sabbatical?

What to Do During Your Gap Year

You can do whatever you want to during your gap year or sabbatical. There is no wrong way to spend your time. Travel is mostly the main one. But there are other things you can do.

Immerse yourself in another culture to learn the language

Volunteer overseas – there are a number of organisations that can help you volunteer on a project. Such as WWOOF an world-wide organisation where you can exchange work in agriculture for food and accommodation.

Get an internship

Have a working holiday in another country

I have done many travel jobs while travelling the world, from working in an office, nannying, housesitting and travel writing and blogging. And now, as I am really into practicing yoga because of its health benefits I have been considering becoming a yoga instructor. And not just being a yoga teacher at home, but taking this qualification on the road to travel and work abroad as a Yoga Teacher. Having done all the research to find out how to do this, I’m just not sure how I will be able to fit it in because of all the other travel jobs I do. Here’s my guide to landing a travel job as a yoga teacher teaching classes around the world.

What is Yoga?

I presume if you are doing yoga already, you will know what yoga is. But let me recap. Yoga is a form of static stretching which involves many sutras (positions) to achieve physical strength, mental peace and spiritual awareness. In yoga, the body, breath and mind are seen as one. I feel more relaxed already! How about you?

What Are the Benefits of Yoga?

Yoga offers many benefits to everyone including:

Improves Strength, Balance and Flexibility while Travelling

Helps you be more aware and focused

Provides neck and back pain relief

Helps maintain Balance

Relieve and reduce Fatigue

Enhances the duration of deep Sleep

Yoga improves Mental Health

The Yoga Instructor Job Description

A yoga teacher is someone who teaches the static stretching and lifestyle values to others. This can be to students of all levels – beginner, intermediate and experienced. As many people have embraced yoga around the world, they are in need of yoga instructors to teach them. This includes travellers of all nationalities who are embracing life abroad but want to continue practicing yoga for the health benefits they offer. So how do you become a yoga instructor and travel the world teaching it.

How to Become a Yoga Teacher?

In order to become a yoga teacher, it will be necessary to undergo yoga teacher training. I suggest you start researching yoga teacher courses near you and enrol in one to start your yoga instructing journey. Courses vary in length but 200 hours is usually accepted for beginner teachers. A course of this length provide aspiring yoga teachers with a good foundation of the practice of yoga. Covering different yoga styles, meditation, breath work, yoga lifestyle, anatomy and more.

Where To Do Your Yoga Teacher Training?

As mentioned, start your yoga instructing journey by research courses nearby or consider overseas destinations. As India is the birthplace of yoga, you will see discover it has many teacher training schools. But so do other countries such as Bali, Thailand, Costa Rica, Europe and some Asian countries. How cool would that be to get your qualification overseas! Ensure when choosing a course, that you will receive certification upon course completion and that it is recognised by the Yoga Alliance. This will mean your qualification is recognised globally and you will be able to work globally.

What is the Yoga Alliance?

The Yoga Alliance is not an official world-wide governing body, but it is where studios, teachers and schools will confirm that any training completed meets a certain standard. It is based in the USA and you may find other alliances such as the Yoga Alliance Professionals.

4 Steps to Becoming a Yoga Teacher

Make the decision you want to be a yoga instructor. Find a course – consider the style of yoga you want to teach and whether you will do the course part or full-time.

Do a course with minimum of 200 hours.

Complete and gain Certification. Once completed you will be a Certified Yoga Teacher (CYT) but to get insurance you will need to be a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT). You register with the Yoga Alliance.

Look for a yoga teaching job.

Where in the World Can I find a Yoga Teaching Job?

The world has embraced yoga and thus, there are yoga jobs all around the world. Particularly in

Yoga retreats

Holiday resorts

Aboard cruise ships and super yachts

You could set up your own teaching school online

Start a Yoga Blog or YouTube Channel

Teaching Chair Yoga to a Group

If you are wanting to land a yoga teaching job as you travel the world, there are a number of options to find a job. Firstly, define the yoga you will be teaching – vinyasa, gentle hatha yoga, kids yoga, chair yoga or traditional Ashtanga to name a few. Knowing what you want to teach will help you decide on where to teach it and how you plan to get a job as a yoga teacher. The main ways to find a job include:

Through websites such a Yoga Trade and Yoga Travel Jobs and Facebook Groups.

Set up your own school online.

Approach retreats and schools in person.

If new to yoga teaching, volunteer your teaching services to gain valuable experience and confidence. Sometimes volunteering can lead to a job.

TIP: Arm yourself with a CV highlighting your yoga credentials and experience.

What Visa Do I need to Teach Yoga?

To officially teach yoga in a country you will need the appropriate work holiday visa or work permit. Some employers will sponsor you to work for them while others will leave the work visa solely to you to obtain – which can be expensive and have a lot of red tape. If you cannot get the appropriate work visa to teach in person, offering classes online may be the way to go. Be careful though, don’t advertise your new business on social media looking for students in a particular country if officially you are not allowed to work in that country.

Can You Make Money as a Yoga Teacher?

Yes, you can make a living as a yoga teacher. The skies the limit on earnings. Most teachers diversity their income by working in a studio, teaching online, working with yoga brands as a yoga influencer, running a yoga blog or YouTube channel. Sometimes you need to try them all to find your niche.

Payment varies by country, but you would be paid per class if working in a resort or retreat. If working online, you will be paid per student. It is also possible to teach yoga in exchange for free accommodation, food and other perks. This is very common if you do not have the appropriate work visa to teach yoga. So yes, you can earn decent money teaching yoga, but it can depend on whether teaching yoga is your side hustle or your full-time job. And if you don’t make much money, at least you may get the opportunity to work in beautiful places abroad.

What Equipment Do You Need to Teach Yoga?

To be able to teach yoga have with you your yoga equipment, or tools of the trade as they say:

Your RYT qualification

Yoga mat

Yoga clothes

Tech equipment to offer courses online (laptop, phone with camera, wifi connection)

Great attitude

Yoga Insurance – Yep, accidents can happen during yoga lessons, and as the teacher, you can be sued. Professional Indemnity insurance will cover you. Yoga insurance usually falls on the responsibility of the teacher and not the place where you are employed.
