Making a full-time income from affiliate marketing, working at home in your dressing gown or from your van while travelling sounds great, right!? All while your bank account is filling up with cash from your affiliate marketing business? Yeah, it can be this easy, or is it?

Making money online, such as with affiliate marketing is appealing compared to that 9-5 slog. But a question you are probably asking is: Can you make a full-time income with affiliate marketing? Or is it just talk from very clever marketers trying to get you to sign up to programs with their ‘special code’ or buy one of their courses?

As I sit here in my pyjamas having my morning coffee I can say that YOU can definitely make a full-time income from affiliate marketing. And sometimes you can earn money way beyond what you could have ever imagined, but, I won’t lie, it can take luck and a lot of hard work. If you’re willing to put in the hard yards, affiliate marketing can really pay off.

I know this because, I am an affiliate marketer amongst other things such as a travel blogger. But on my blogs I market affiliates that I make a regular and decent income from. And I know other affiliate marketers who are doing just the same.

One last point before I explain how to make a full-time income with affiliate marketing, it isn’t as simple as a lot of people will tell you. You need to have a strategy and the right products or services to promote. Affiliate marketing is like being a middleman between companies and potential customers with YOU being the middleman or middleman. 

As an affiliate marketer, you promote products or services offered by other companies and earn a commission for every sale, lead, or action generated through your referral. Sounds simple!

And to put it simply, you’re basically recommending products or services to your audience. When they make a purchase or take a desired action like make an enquiry, you earn a commission.

There are several benefits of affiliate marketing, both for the affiliate and the affiliate marketer (YOU).

Low risk, high reward: For affiliates, there’s minimal risk involved since you don’t have to create or own the products you’re promoting. Very similar to drop shipping. You can start with little to no investment and earn passive income by leveraging your existing audience or marketing channels.

Flexibility and freedom: Affiliate marketing gives you the flexibility to work from anywhere, anytime, and be your own boss. You can choose which products to promote, how to promote them, and when to work on your affiliate marketing efforts, giving you the freedom to design your own schedule and lifestyle. And this is great if you want to be a remote worker or live the digital nomad lifestyle.

How Long Can it Take to Make a Full-Time Income with Affiliate Marketing?

If you are sitting at your laptop reading this what might be crossing your mind is ‘how long can it take to make a full-time income with affiliate marketing?’ because you have rent to pay, bills to pay and food to buy. Yeah, I get you, but if this is you right now, forget affiliate marketing because affiliate marketing is more of a long-term option rather than an overnight win.

Don’t let my statement put you off. Start implementing process for affiliate marketing and hopefully results will begin. I have known some people who get results in a few months while others may slow burn for a year before getting results. But if you don’t try, you will never know!

How To Make a Full-Time Income with Affiliate Marketing

So where do you start with affiliate marketing.

1. Learn the Basics of How Affiliate Marketing Works

Start your affiliate marketing journey by learning the basics of how affiliate marketing works. So what are the basics of affiliate marketing I hear you ask? Basically, you have your niche and you choose to promote brands related to your niche. For promoting the brands, and selling the product, you receive a commission for doing so. This should be paid monthly.

If you have been thinking about making a full-time income from affiliate marketing and dream of leaving your 9-5, you need to know where to start. Your first step should be learning the basics, educating yourself and starting to build up your brand. It is easy to miss this step, however, the better you understand how affiliate marketing works, the better you can be at it.

To give you an example here. I have been a travel blogger for a long time and specialise in writing about living and working abroad. When writing my articles I think about products and services people who want to live and work abroad needs. Services and products such as accommodation, luggage and transport. Therefore, I promote in these fields to my readers in the hope, they will click through and purchase – hence, providing me with affiliate income.

2. Choose a niche that is profitable

So you understand how affiliate marketing works, now it’s time to put it into practice. The first step when starting as a beginner affiliate marketer is to choose a niche that is profitable. I have chosen travel, but other profitable niches are wealth, health, relationships and pet products. But the choice is really yours.

I would suggest you decide on a niche you’re passionate about or have knowledge of, because when you have these, you can write great posts quickly. 

3. Join Affiliate Programs

Before you join an affiliate program, know which products you wish to promote, then research which affiliate program they are with. Does the company run their own affiliate program or are they on an affiliate platform. 

4. Set up Your Processes

Once you have joined affiliate programs you need to transfer your unique code for products to where you will be selling the product. This can be on your website or online store. Place the links in relatable information you are providing. 

I would start promoting only a few products at first. 

So if I am promoting an accommodation booking site such as Booking dot com, I put the link in an accommodation post. Such as my how to choose accommodation for digital nomads. 

5. Start Building Your Audience

Once you have chosen the affiliate program to promote, put the link on your website or store, you need to get people seeing your website or store. This is when you need to start building your audience on social media.

If you want to make a full-time income from affiliate marketing, you need to build up a targeted audience by showing them you have the answers to their problems. You see, people don’t care about you, they care about what you can do for them. This means being present on social media connecting to people and sharing how the products you are promoting can help them.

For instance, when you arrive in a new place, where will you stay for a few nights. I resolve this problem by recommending accommodation options.

6. Regularly monitor results and adapt your Strategy

Earning commission will definitely show that what you are doing is working. However, if you are making a few sales or worse, no sales you will need to change your strategy. 

A good thing about the affiliate programs is they provide extensive information captured from your readers. Information can include what pages people are visiting or what products they are buying. Use this information to adapt your strategy. 

If you have had no sales for a backpack yet 10 sales for a suitcase with wheels, then you know what to promote.

TIP: Making affiliate marketing your full-time career can take time and persistence. Some give up in the first few months when they don’t make any money, but know that building a brand in any line of business takes time.
