3 Day Salzburg Itinerary
Day 1: Historic Old Town

Mozart’s birthplace
Morning in Salzburg: Mirabell Palace and Gardens
Start your Salzburg adventure with a visit to Mirabell Palace and Gardens! The beautifully landscaped gardens offer a serene start to your day. Stroll through the pathways adorned with vibrant flowers and classical sculptures. The view of the Hohensalzburg Fortress in the background adds a touch of magic to your morning. One thing to note about Salzburg is that the iconic “Sound of Music” was filmed there! While we were walking through the Gardens, there was a performer singing “Do-Re-Mi”. The “Sound of Music” was Maddy’s first musical, so it was truly a magical experience.
Late Morning: Mozart’s Birthplace
Take a short walk to Mozart’s Birthplace, the very house where the musical prodigy was born. Explore the exhibits showcasing Mozart’s early life and musical achievements. The residence provides insights into Mozart’s creative process and his life in Salzburg. Something that was so fun while we were there was the music of Austrian performers right outside his former residence. We had so much fun listening to the music and taking in the scenery around us. Also, don’t forget to walk around the corner to Cafe Konditorei, which is famous for the Mozartkugel! The Mozartkugel is a delicious chocolate-covered marzipan confection named after the iconic composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. If you’re from the United States, stock up as they don’t deliver outside of Europe!
Lunch: St. Peter Stiftskulinarium
Head to St. Peter Stiftskulinarium, the oldest restaurant in the world. This restaurant was first documented in the year 803 and can be found in the heart of Salzburg’s Old Town. All we can say is wow! The interior was so traditional, yet modern in certain aspects, and the food was incredible. Many dishes there are traditional Austrian cuisine and there’s no question why they have been in business for so long. The location, atmosphere, and food is hard to beat!
Afternoon: Get Lost in Salzburg Old Town
Let the afternoon unfold as you wander through the narrow streets of Old Town. Discover hidden squares, picturesque alleys, and charming boutiques. Don’t miss landmarks like Salzburg Cathedral and St. Peter’s Abbey. Take your time to absorb the rich history and architectural wonders around every corner.
Dinner: Zum fidelen Affen
Conclude your one perfect day in Salzburg with dinner at Zum fidelen Affen, a cozy restaurant known for its traditional Austrian fare. Enjoy a delightful meal in a relaxed atmosphere, surrounded by the warmth of Salzburg’s hospitality.
Day 2: Salzburg’s Famous Castle

Hohensalzburg Fortress stands over Salzburg
Morning: Hohensalzburg Fortress
Rise early and make your way to Hohensalzburg Fortress, perched high above the city. Take the funicular or enjoy a scenic walk to reach this iconic landmark. Explore the fortress grounds, visit the museums, and savor panoramic views of Salzburg and the surrounding mountains. We can safely say that this was the best view of the city!
Purchase your ticket to Hohensalzburg Fortress here.
Lunch: Panorama Restaurant at Hohensalzburg Fortress
Indulge in lunch at the Panorama Restaurant within the fortress. Relish Austrian specialties while gazing at the breathtaking vistas. The combination of culinary delights and stunning scenery makes for an unforgettable dining experience. We also noticed that they were about to prepare for a corporate event, so the restaurant is extremely versatile in its use.
Afternoon: Mönchsberg Elevator and Modern Art Museum
After visiting the fortress, start your descent by using the Mönchsberg Elevator, offering a unique and quick trip down the hill. Once at the bottom, venture to the Museum der Moderne, dedicated to contemporary art. Explore the many exhibits and enjoy the museum’s modern architectural design.
Dinner: Sternbräu
Head back to Old Town for dinner at Sternbräu, a historic brewery and restaurant. Dig into more hearty Austrian dishes, paired with locally brewed beer. The cozy atmosphere and authentic flavors make Sternbräu a perfect choice for a relaxing evening.
Day 3: Mozart and Nature

Hellbrunn Palace
Morning: Mozart’s Wohnhaus and Café Tomaselli
Begin your day with a visit to Mozart’s Wohnhaus, the composer’s former residence. Explore the exhibits, including Mozart’s instruments and personal belongings. Afterwards, indulge in a leisurely breakfast at Café Tomaselli, one of Salzburg’s oldest coffeehouses. The historic setting provides a delightful backdrop for a morning coffee and pastry.
Late Morning: Take a Stroll by the Salzach River
Enjoy a scenic stroll along the banks of the Salzach River. Admire the views of the Old Town skyline and the surrounding mountains. Consider crossing the Makartsteg Bridge draped with love locks, adding a touch of romance to your morning. The Salzach River is the main river in Salzburg and separates the Old and New Town.
Lunch: Die Weisse
Head to Die Weisse for lunch, a traditional brewery and beer garden. You can’t get enough Austrian dishes during your stay, as well as locally brewed beer in a relaxed outdoor setting. The beer garden’s lively atmosphere offers a perfect blend of culinary delights and Salzburg’s sociable vibe.
Afternoon: Hellbrunn Palace and Trick Fountains
Spend your afternoon exploring Hellbrunn Palace and its famous Trick Fountains. Hellbrunn Palace was built in the early 17th century by Markus Sittikus, the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg, as a summer residence. The palace’s architecture is a prime example of early Baroque style, featuring elegant facades and symmetrical design. Discover the playful side of Salzburg’s history as you wander through the gardens and experience the Trick Fountains. The Trick Fountains consist of hidden jets, water sprays, and unexpected water spouts strategically placed throughout the gardens. Hellbrunn Palace and the Trick Fountains are fun for any traveler, but especially a family with kids. It is the perfect place to have fun for the whole family!
Dinner: Stieglkeller
Conclude your Salzburg adventure with dinner at Stieglkeller, another historic restaurant and beer garden. As you’ve noticed, Salzburg is so historical and many of the sights and things to do have been around for many generations. Enjoy your last Austrian meal in a cute and charming outdoor setting. Stieglkeller’s location on the Mönchsberg offers captivating views of Salzburg as you savor your final evening in the city.
