Me in a snowy Stockholm on a visit from Upsalla – my favourite snowy European location for a winter holiday!

Living in one of the world’s hottest countries – Australia, my Christmas is during summer and thus spent at the beach or by the pool. It was always a dream to have a white Christmas and when I lived in England on a working holiday, I finally had a white Christmas, two in fact in Europe. One was in the Austrian Alps and the other in Upsalla, Sweden. And I am always interested to increase my list with another snowy European location for a winter holiday.

There is just something special about visiting Europe during winter. Snow can completely transform a place that creates experiences you just can’t get at other times of the year. There are short days, Christmas markets, festivities and local culture and traditions to discover. My favourite Europe snowy location for a winter holiday was Sweden and now I’ve asked fellow bloggers their favourite European snowy location for a Christmas or winter holiday. So if you are wanting some inspiration of where to go in Europe for a white Christmas or a snowy European holiday, then this is what they said:

Alpe de’Huez, France

Alpe d’Huez

Tucked away in the breathtaking French Alps, Alpe d’Huez isn’t just a ski resort — it’s a winter wonderland waiting to be explored.

First things first, the snow! Perched at a lofty 1,860 meters, with a wide range of slopes that reach elevations well beyond the base village, Alpe d’Huez is a haven for snow enthusiasts. Whether you’re carving down slopes in an adrenaline-fueled descent or meandering through winter hiking trails that showcase the Alps’ pristine beauty, the possibilities for snowy adventures are endless.

Yet, Alpe d’Huez isn’t just about the thrill of the snow. It’s a place where the magic extends beyond the slopes. The lively streets adorned by boutique shops and restaurants offer a cozy retreat after a day of snowy escapades. While the après-ski scene, offering a unique fusion of winter sports and music, particularly with the awe-inspiring Tomorrowland Winter, takes the festivities to new heights.

And then there’s the culinary journey. French cuisine takes the spotlight here. Indulge in heartwarming fondue, delicate pastries, and the rich warmth of mulled wine.

All in all, Alpe d’Huez isn’t just a destination; it’s a celebration of winter. And well worth its place as one of the most captivating snowy destinations in Europe for a festive Christmas or an extended winter retreat!

Grindelwald, a village in Switzerland, is one of Europe’s best snowy destinations to spend Christmas in Europe. Grindelwald can be reached from the city of Interlaken by train in about 45 minutes. When you arrive at the train station, you are immediately in the center of the village.

The village is surrounded by large, beautiful snow-capped mountains. During the winter season, and often during Christmas, it snows in Grindelwald. Grindelwald is a picturesque village and a ski resort with lots of things to do. You can find many shops and restaurants in the village, including the Swiss Chocolate Chalet, which is a chocolate shop with delicious and beautiful chocolates. Another great place to check out is Restaurant Alte Post, a restaurant on the main street of Grindelwald where you can have delicious Swiss food. The EIGER+ cafe lounge at Sportzentrum Grindelwald is also a cozy place to enjoy food and drinks.

On December 2, the “Advent Market’ takes place at the square next to the village’s train station. This is an outdoor market where local vendors sell their goods. Grindelwald is home to many places to stay with incredible views. Romantik Hotel Schweizerhof, a 4-star hotel offers rooms with views of the surrounding mountains.

The Harz Mountains, Germany

Harz Mountains

It may be a well-known fact that Germany is an excellent destination during the winter months. But one region particularly stands out: the Harz Mountains in the Northern part of the country.

When it gets colder, this natural landscape transforms into a genuine winter wonderland. From snow-covered forests to various picturesque towns in the Harz Mountains, countless Christmas markets, and breathtaking landscapes.

Visit the various villages in the Harz Mountains and be enchanted by several UNESCO World Heritage Sites. If you are visiting Germany in December, make sure you take advantage of a visit to the Christmas markets. The medieval Christmas market in Goslar, for example, is one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in the whole of Germany. Enjoy a hot mulled wine while you stroll through the festively decorated square – Christmas is still celebrated here as you remember it from your childhood fairytale book.

After exploring the medieval villages with their fascinating half-timbered alleyways, don’t miss out on the region’s beautiful nature.

Whether it’s skiing, long walks in the snow, or simply relaxing in a restaurant with typical Harz cuisine or secluded accommodation with a spa and views of the snow-covered landscape surrounding it – there’s something for everyone here.

Lillehammer, Norway

Plenty of snow for cross country skiing in Lillehammer, Norway.

Lillehammer sunset

Lillehammer is best known for the Netflix series (with the same name) and hosting the 1994 Winter Olympics. But it is also a great winter destination with excellent skiing areas.

At Kvitfjell and Hafjell there are downhill slopes. Cross country skiing is more popular with adults in Norway and there are lots of tracks. For longer routes into the mountains drive to Sjusjoen or Skeikampen.

Close to Lillehammer is the amusement park called Hunderfossen which provides winter fun for the whole family. The bobsleigh track from the Olympics has been moved here. Today it is open to visitors who can fly down the mountain at up to 120 km/h. The sledges fit 3 people plus an authorised pilot.

Hunderfossen also offers less adrenaline-filled winter adventures such as dog sledding, snowshoeing and sleigh rides. You can even stay in a snow hotel called Hunderfossen Snow Hotel. Or have a drink in the ice bar where the drinks are served in glasses made from ice.

Lillehammer is 2 hours north of Oslo’s Gardermoen Airport. Direct trains run between Lillehammer and the airport. Being inland the climate is cold and Lillehammer and the areas around the city get a lot of snow in the winter. In fact, the snow around Lillehammer is so reliable Scotland’s cross-country team is based here all winter.

Sinaia, Romania

Favourite snowy European holiday spot of Joanna of The World in My Pocket

Snow covered mountains in Romania during winter.

Snowy Sinaia

Sinaia is one of the most popular mountain resorts in Romania. In summer is a great place to go to for a nice break in the mountain, whilst in winter it transforms into a winter wonderland. Sinaia is located in Prahova County, at the foothills of Bucegi Mountains. You can easily reach it by train, from Bucharest. It takes around 2 hours.

Sinaia has 19km of ski slopes available, with 5 different routes. It is a very popular resort for winter sports in Romania. Even if you don’t ski, there are plenty of things to do in Sinaia, starting with visiting Peles Castle, the former residence of the Royal family of Romania. The castle is surrounded by deep forests and getting to it involves a pleasant hike through the snowy scenery. There is a proper road and a proper path leading to it, so don’t worry.

There are plenty of restaurants in Sinaia where you can try the traditional Romanian food. Don’t miss the sarmale, now the winter warming papanasi. Mulled wine is very popular in winter as well.

From Sinaia you can take the cable car up to Cota 1400, which is at 1400 meters high in the mountains. From the nearby town of Busteni you can also take the cable car up to the Bucegi plateau. Here you will find two rock structures modelled by the wine, one called the Spynx and one called The Old Ladies.

Sinaia makes a great destination for the European winter holidays. Most of the hotels and chalets in town are fully booked over the holidays so if you plan to spend Christmas or New Year’s here, make sure to book way ahead of time.

Abisko Sweden

Favourite snowy holiday spot in Europe of Amber from Amber Everywhere

Abisko Sweden is great place to see the Northern Lights turn the sky green.

See the Northern Lights from Abisco, Sweden

Nestled above the Arctic Circle in Sweden is the small village of Abisko. This is the perfect place to spend a snowy winter holiday in Europe. Although the town of Abisko is small, it’s cozy and has plenty of outdoor activities to keep you busy. You can hike in select areas, snowshoe, cross country ski, and even ice climb in the nearby Abisko National Park.

Perhaps the top reason to visit Abisko is the chance of seeing the northern lights. The sky above Abisko is known for being consistently clear, with high auroral activity. There’s no guarantee that you’ll see the northern lights while you’re in Abisko, but your chances will be high, especially if you have several days to a week in the area.

While you’re in Abisko, you might as well explore the nearby areas like Kiruna, Sweden and Narvik, Norway. Both are accessible by train from Abisko. You could even plan a night in an arctic dome for an extra special experience (and the chance to see the northern lights from your warm bed).

The key to enjoying winter in Abisko is having plenty of warm clothing. You’ll want to wear warm layers and a waterproof shell that can protect you from the harsh Arctic weather. A parka, snow boots, snow pants, and gloves are essential.
